Blair Underwood gives a remarkable portrayal as Mark in this the second of the four New Testament Gospels accounts that tell the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus. Neal McDonough's captivating performance as Jesus will leave you deeply impacted and spiritually challenged. Let's listen in as Mark recounts the powerful story of the greatest life to ever be. Narrator/Reader
When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home and many were gathered together so that there was no longer room for not even about the door. Jesus was preaching the Word to them, and they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. When they could not get near Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said.
Jesus
To the paralytic, my son, your sins are forgiven.
Narrator/Reader
Now some of the scribes were sitting there questioning in their hearts, why does this man speak thus? It is blasphemy.
Jesus
Who can forgive sins but God alone?
Narrator/Reader
And immediately Jesus, perceiving in His Spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said.
Jesus
To them, why do you question thus in your hearts? Which is easier to say to the paralytic, your sins are forgiven? Or to say, rise, take up your pallet and walk. But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth.
Narrator/Reader
To forgive sins, he said to the.
Jesus
Paralytic, I say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home.
Narrator/Reader
And he rose and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, we never saw anything like this. He went out again beside the sea. All the crowd gathered about him. And he taught them. As he passed on, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at the tax office. And he said to him, follow me. And Levi rose and followed him. As he sat at table in his house. Many tax collectors and sinners were sitting with Jesus and his disciples. For there were many who followed him. And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors said to his disciples, why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners? When Jesus heard it, he said to.
Jesus
Them, those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.
Narrator/Reader
Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to Jesus, why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast? But your disciples do not fast.
Jesus
Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins and the wine is lost, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh skins.
Narrator/Reader
One Sabbath he was going through the grain fields. And as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?
Jesus
Have you never read what David did when he was in need and was hungry? He and those who were with him. How he entered the house of God when Abiathar was high priest and ate the bread of the presence which it is not lawful for any but the priest to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him. The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.
Narrator/Reader
Again Jesus entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. And they watched him to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath so that they might accuse him. Jesus said to the man who had the withered hand Come here.
Jesus
Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm? To save life or to kill?
Narrator/Reader
They were silent. He looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, stretch out your hand. The man stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately held council with the Herodians against Jesus. How to destroy him? Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea. And a great multitude from Galilee followed. Also from Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, hearing all that he did, came to him. Jesus told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they should crush him. For he had healed many so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him. And whenever the unclean spirits beheld Jesus, they fell down before him and cried out, you are the Son of God. Jesus strictly ordered them not to make him known. Jesus went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired. And they came to him. He appointed 12 to be with him and to be sent out to preach and have authority to cast out demons. Simon, whom he surnamed Peter. James, the son of Zebedee, and John, the brother of James, whom he surnamed Boanerges, that is, sons of thunder, Andrew and Philip and Bartholomew and Matthew and Thomas and James the son of Alphaeus and Thaddeus and Simon the Cannonian and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. Then? Then he went home and the crowd came together again so that they could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to seize him.
Ainsley Earhart
He is beside himself.
Narrator/Reader
The scribes who came down from Jerusalem.
Jesus
Said, he is possessed by Beelzebul and.
Narrator/Reader
By the prince of demons.
Jesus
He casts out the demons.
Narrator/Reader
Jesus called them to him and said.
Jesus
To them in parables, how can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods. Unless he first binds the strong man, then indeed he may plunder his house. Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men and whatever blasphemies they utter. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin. He has an unclean spirit.
Narrator/Reader
Jesus, Mother, and his brethren came, and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting about him. And they said to him, your mother and your brethren are outside asking for you.
Jesus
Who are my mother and my brethren?
Narrator/Reader
Looking around on those who sat about.
Jesus
Him, he said, here are my mother and my brethren. Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.
Narrator/Reader
Again Jesus began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him. So that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea. And the whole crowd was beside the sea, on the land. He taught them many things in parables. And in his teaching he said to them, listen.
Jesus
A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path and the birds came and devoured it. Other seed fell on rocky ground where it had not much soil, and immediately it sprang up. Since it had no depth of soil, when the sun rose, it was scorched. And since it had no root, it withered away. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. Other seeds fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
Narrator/Reader
When he was alone, those who were about him with the 12 asked him concerning the parables. And he said to them, to you.
Jesus
Has been given the secret of the kingdom of God. But for those outside, everything is in parables. So that they may indeed see, but not perceive, and may indeed hear, but not understand, lest they should turn again and be forgiven. Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? The sower sows the Word. These are the ones along the path where the Word is sown. When they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the Word which is sown in them. And these in like manner, are the ones sown upon rocky ground who, when they hear the Word immediately receive it with joy. And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while. Then when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the Word, immediately they fall away. Others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the Word. But the cares of the world and the delight in riches and the desire for other things enter in and choke the Word, and it proves unfruitful. But those that were sown upon the good soil are the ones who hear the Word and accept it and bear fruit through thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold is a lamp brought in to Be put under a bushel or under a bed, and not on a stand. For there is nothing hid except to be made manifest. Nor is anything secret except to come to light. If any man has ears to hear, let him hear. Take heed what you hear. The measure you give will be the measure you get. And still more will be given you. For to him who has, will more be given. And from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed upon the ground and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should sprout and grow. He knows not how the earth produces of itself. First the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come. With what can we compare the kingdom of God? Or what parable shall we use?
Narrator/Reader
For.
Jesus
Is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth. Yet when it is sown, it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.
Narrator/Reader
With many such parables he spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it. He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples. He explained everything. On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, let us go.
Jesus
Across to the other side.
Narrator/Reader
And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was, and other boats were with him. A great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat so that the boat was already filling. But Jesus was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. They woke him, Teacher, do you not care if we perish? And he awoke and rebuked the wind.
Jesus
Peace be still.
Narrator/Reader
And the wind ceased. And there was a great calm.
Jesus
Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?
Narrator/Reader
They were filled with awe.
Jesus
Who then is this that even wind and sea obey him?
Narrator/Reader
They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes, which, when Jesus had come out of the boat, there met him out of the tombs. A man with an unclean spirit who lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore even with a chain. For he had often been bound with fetters and chains. But the chains he wrenched apart, and the fetters he broke in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. Night and day, among the tombs and on the mountains, he was always crying out. And Bruising himself with stones. When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped him. And crying out with a loud voice, he said, what have you to do with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God. Do not torment me.
Jesus
Come out of the man, you unclean spirit. What is your name?
Narrator/Reader
My name is Legion, for we are many. And he begged Jesus eagerly not to send them out of the country. Now a great herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside. And they begged him, send us to the swine. Let us enter them. So Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the swine. The herd, numbering about 2,000, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and were drowned in the sea. The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. They came to Jesus and saw the demoniac sitting there clothed. And in his right mind the man who had had the legion. And they were afraid. Those who had seen it told what had happened to the demoniac and to the swine. They began to beg Jesus to depart from their neighborhood. As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. But Jesus refused.
Jesus
Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has had mercy on you.
Narrator/Reader
And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all men marveled. When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side. A great crowd gathered about him. And he was beside the sea. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name. And seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet and besought him. My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her so that she may be made well and live. And Jesus went with him. A great crowd followed him and thronged about him. There was a woman who had had a flow of blood for 12 years. And who had suffered much under many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. If I touch even his garments, I shall be made well. Immediately the hemorrhage ceased. And she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone forth from him immediately turned about in the crowd.
Jesus
Who touched my garments?
Narrator/Reader
His disciples said to Him. You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, who touched me? Jesus looked around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had been done to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.
Jesus
Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed of your disease.
Narrator/Reader
While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler's house some who said.
Jesus
Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?
Narrator/Reader
But ignoring what they said, Jesus said.
Jesus
To the ruler of the synagogue, do not fear, only believe.
Narrator/Reader
Jesus allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John, the brother of James. When they came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, Jesus saw a tumult and people weeping and wailing loudly. When he had entered, he said to.
Jesus
Them, why do you make a tumult and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.
Narrator/Reader
And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was taking her by the hand. He said to her, talitha kumi, which means little girl, I say to you, arise. And immediately the girl got up and walked. She was 12 years of age. They were immediately overcome with amazement. Jesus strictly charged them that no one should know this. And told them to give her something to eat. He went away from there and came to his own country. And his disciples followed him. On the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue. And many who heard him were astonished.
Jesus
Where did this man get all this? What is the wisdom given to him? What mighty works are wrought by his hands?
Narrator/Reader
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they took offense at him.
Jesus
Jesus, a prophet, is not without honor. Except in his own country and among his own kin and in his own house.
Narrator/Reader
Jesus could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands upon a few sick people and healed them. And he marveled because of their unbelief. He went about among the villages teaching. And he called to him the 12 and began to send them out two by two. And gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff. No bread, no bag, no money in their belts, but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics.
Jesus
Where you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. And if any place will not receive you, and they refuse to hear you when you leave, shake off the Dust that is on your feet for a testimony against them.
Narrator/Reader
So they went out and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them. King Herod heard of it, for Jesus name had become known.
Jesus
Some said, john the baptizer has been raised from the dead. That is why these powers are at work in him.
Narrator/Reader
But others said, it is Elijah. And others said, it is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old. But when Herod heard of it, he.
Jesus
Said, john, whom I beheaded has been raised.
Narrator/Reader
For Herod had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because he had married her. For John said to Herod, it is.
Jesus
Not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.
Narrator/Reader
Herodias had a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she could not. For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man and kept him safe. When Herod heard John, he was much perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and the leading men of Galilee. When Herodias daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl.
Jesus
Ask me for whatever you wish and I will grant it. Whatever you ask me, I will give you even half of my kingdom.
Narrator/Reader
She went out and said to her.

The king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his gifts, he did not want to break his word to her immediately. The king sent a soldier of the guard and gave orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded him in the prison and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl. And the girl gave it to her mother. When John's disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Matthew was a Tax collector in those days, being a tax collector was no different than bearing the label of a thief. Matthew made his living by taking exorbitant sums of money from those who could really least afford it. Those who collected taxes were known for upcharging the tax bill and pocketing the excess. When Jesus asked Matthew to join his followers, it seemed a scandal too many do we follow in the pattern set by the detractors of Matthew? Do we look at those whose paths are less than perfect and judge them according to yesterday? Or do we realize that the only constant in life is change? Nothing changes more than people who learn and grow over time. There is a reason Jesus said we should not judge others. We cannot know what lives within the heart of the person whose past actions we judge. Father, please help me to never judge anyone by past actions. Help me to trust you to bring change when and where it is needed in the lives of those who follow you. Thank you for listening to episode 8 of the 52 episodes podcast series the Life of Jesus. A closing reflection on the calling of Matthew (Levi), the transformation of those labeled as outcasts, and the importance of not judging others for their past.
The episode maintains a reverent, immersive storytelling tone, blending direct gospel text with evocative character performances. Jesus’ voice is gentle yet authoritative, frequently issuing challenges both to his contemporaries and to listeners. Scenes are vivid, packed with emotional resonance—from awe at miracles to the tension of religious opposition, finally ending with personal and spiritual reflection.
