In January, Pickering grabbed a gun, marched into Tomball Regional Medical center and became locked in an hours long standoff with police. Staff at the hospital told police Pickering threatened them with that gun.
Holly Worthington
He's pointing the gun.

This is the Miracle Files. I'm Emily Jones.
Holly Worthington
And I'm Holly Worthington. Sometimes the news and social media can feel pretty dark and true crime can
Emily Jones
leave you afraid to even crawl into bed. But we're here to prove that there are more miracles than murders.
Holly Worthington
In these special Miracles in the News episodes, we dig through the headlines for
Emily Jones
you because miracles still happen and God is still good.
Holly Worthington
Welcome back to Miracles in the News. Emily, I have a story for you today out of Tomball, Texas. And when I first read it, I honestly didn't know if I should share the story. I didn't know how to feel about it. It's maybe a little or even a lot controversial.
Emily Jones
Ooh, interesting. Like politics, religion. What we talking here?
Holly Worthington
No, but you'll see. So here's the story. We're going to be talking about two Georges today. We've got George Senior, who is a father, and George Jr. Who is his son. And they're very close. They run a small electrical engineering business together. They even built a house together. So in 2015, George Jr. Is just 27 years old when he suffers a massive stroke. He's had a history of seizures, but this is something entirely different. And doctors at Tomball Regional Medical center have to put him on life support. Within 16 hours, George Sr. Receives some devastating news. The doctors inform him that there's nothing more they can do for George Jr. And they're planning to take him off of life support. George Sr. Is overwhelmed by grief. He goes home and he drowns his sorrows in alcohol.
George Pickering Sr.
They were saying that he was brain dead. He was a vegetable.
Narrator/Reporter
The hospital ordered something called a terminal wean, a process that slowly removes life support. Hospital staff even notified an organ donation organization to let them know Pickering's son was an organ donor.
George Pickering Sr.
I remember walking in and as I walk into the living room, we have a cross on the wall the house. And I could remember just calling out, georgie, Georgie. Where's my Georgie?
Emily Jones
Oh, my gosh. That's heartbreaking.
Holly Worthington
Yeah. So years before, George Pickering Jr. Had actually gone through a similar experience in some ways where he'd been really sick, came close to dying and had recovered from one of his seizures. So George Sr. Has faith that his son can still recover and he doesn't want to just give up on him.
Emily Jones
Yeah, I wouldn't want to give up on my child either. I can relate to that.
Holly Worthington
I wouldn't either. So George believes the doctors are moving too fast, that they're making a rash decision and they aren't really listening to George. He's pretty drunk at this point, so that does not help him to be listened to. Right. And he feels certain that his son is not gone. And despite the fact that he doesn't have medical power of attorney over his son, George Sr. Is not about to just stand there and let doctors take his son off. Elisa port so at this point, George Pickering Sr. Does something unthinkable. He storms the hospital with a gun.
Emily Jones
Oh my gosh.
Holly Worthington
Hey, we need to police stat to the hospital. We have a family member with a gun.
Narrator/Reporter
In January, Pickering grabbed a gun, marched into Tomball Regional Medical center, and became locked in an hours long standoff with police staff at the hospital. Told police Pickering threatened them with that gun.
Emily Jones
Pointing the gun.
Holly Worthington
Whoa.
Emily Jones
Okay, so that escalated quick.
Holly Worthington
Yeah, Right. So a standoff with the police ensues. George actually has another son who shows up at the hospital and he tries to reason with his father. He actually gets the gun away from George Senior, but George Senior is not ready to give up the fight yet. He lies and says he has another gun and he goes into the hospital room. He gets everybody out of there. He pulls the curtain shut around him and his son and he threatens anyone who comes near them.
Emily Jones
Oh my gosh.
George Pickering Sr.
I wanted time. The whole thing was moving, moving too fast. I mean, as just. It just needed to slow down a little bit. I just knew I had to stop it.

Holly Worthington
So the Standoff continues for four hours.
Emily Jones
Oh, my God.
Holly Worthington
Please call in a crisis negotiator. And they're trying to think of everything they can to calm George down. But George isn't giving up. And meanwhile, George Sr. Keeps talking to his son. He begs George Jr. To squeeze his hand if he can hear him. And this is what really blows me away. Suddenly, George Jr. Does squeeze his father's hand.
Emily Jones
Oh, my gosh.
Holly Worthington
Not one time. Three or four times. And on command. So George Sr. Immediately calls the medical staff back into the room. And he shows the doctors what's happening. And the doctors can't believe it. They examine George Jr. And they realize that George Jr. Is not beyond hope and he's not brain dead after all. Wow.
Emily Jones
That is insane that he actually was right. How does that even happen?
Holly Worthington
It's like his father just had a feeling in his gut. And finally, George Sr. Surrenders to the police peacefully.
Emily Jones
He.
Holly Worthington
He's arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He's sent to jail to await sentencing. And he's also ordered to have no contact with his sons or their mother.
Emily Jones
Interesting. Like, what a dilemma. Technically, he was right. But, like, at the same time, you can't just, you know, enter a hospital with a gun. No, it's like one of those moral dilemmas. Like, you know, the train problem. Where do you pull the lever if you could save more people? Like, I just. Yeah, I don't know. It's tough.
Holly Worthington
I absolutely feel like I would do something like this if I knew my son had a chance to live and they were going to take him off of life support. Like, I'd probably bring bear spray instead. I'm not good at shooting guns.
Emily Jones
Yeah, you don't know how to shoot a gun.
Holly Worthington
But, I mean, we don't condone violence. Let me. Let me just clarify that. We do not condone violence in hospitals or any other public places or anywhere else. But at the same time, like, what was his father supposed to do? I don't know what he should have done.
Emily Jones
I just know, like, I would do anything to protect my children. And so I can't judge this father. But I'm actually really interested to see, like, the comment section of our podcast episode this week, because I would love to hear what our listeners have to think about this.
Holly Worthington
I would, too.
Emily Jones
Would you have done the same thing if you were in his shoes? I don't know.
Holly Worthington
Yeah, I don't know either. But amazingly, George Jr. Has a full recovery. Wow. And he's completely fine now.
Emily Jones
Wow.
Holly Worthington
That's so that alone is miraculous. Right. But something else happens that I think is so awesome. So George is in jail. He only has one book in jail. You can probably guess what that book is. It's a Bible. And he reads it over and over and over again. And so when George Sr. Finally gets out of jail on bond, guess what he does? What? It's Easter Sunday, and he decides to turn over a new leaf and get baptized.
Emily Jones
Oh, my gosh.
George Pickering Sr.
Some of y' all may remember that there was a.
Holly Worthington
A man with a gun at Commonwealth
George Pickering Sr.
Hospital back in January. This is the man. So God brought George Sr. To our church parking lot because he just needed the Lord.
Holly Worthington
It is my great, wonderful honor to
George Pickering Sr.
baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Emily Jones
It's incredible. I mean, he's just, like. Seems like this nice, normal guy. Not like somebody would go take a hospital hostage. Kind of crazy.
Holly Worthington
Yeah. I mean, obviously, he made some mistakes. I think getting drunk was probably the first mistake on that list, but.
Emily Jones
Right.
Holly Worthington
But he actually says that while he was in the ICU with his son, he prayed, and he really felt like God answered his prayers there. And he said that this was the stepping stone that he needed to turn his life around and get baptized. And George Jr. Is at the baptism as well. And George Senior turns around and baptizes George Jr. Too.
Emily Jones
Oh, that's awesome.
Holly Worthington
Yeah. So now there's one minor detail that everyone has kind of forgotten about this baptism. George Senior and George Jr. Still have a no contact order, and they aren't supposed to be in the same vicinity. So when the church posts the video of the baptism online, guess who goes straight back to jail?
Emily Jones
No. George.
Spreaker Advertiser
No.
Emily Jones
That's terrible.
Holly Worthington
He's having a bit of a rough
Emily Jones
time with the law again.
Holly Worthington
We're gonna let you all decide where you stand on that issue. But one thing is undeniable. If George Pickering Senior hadn't done what he did, his son would not be here today. Yeah. And his son's life is a miracle.
Emily Jones
Yeah. And I am sure if he had to do this over again, he would do it in a heartbeat.
Holly Worthington
Yeah, in a heartbeat. Absolutely. I don't think he regrets it. And eventually, George serves a total of 11 months in jail. At sentencing, one charge is dropped and another charge is reduced, and he's released with time served. And George Jr. Tells reporters there was a law broken, but it was broken for all the right reasons. I'm here now because of it. It was love. And the hospital releases this statement. If you'll read it, Emily.
Emily Jones
Okay. It says physicians use their medical knowledge and experience to develop a patient's plan of care, and these actions save lives each day. When a patient's conditions make them unable to participate in their own care, the appropriate substitute decision maker has the right to decide whether or not they will move forward with a recommended care plan. However, that decision must be expressed in a way that does not endanger other patients or caregivers. And I'm sure this hospital staff was doing everything they could. I'm sure they were making the best decisions that they knew possible. Like, obviously, they deserve to be protected and to feel safe when they're at work.
Holly Worthington
So, yeah, I have really good friends who are doctors and medical personnel, and I have so much respect for them. They truly save lives and do so much good. And I just think maybe in this situation, this father just had intuition, just had a feeling, kind of unique, that maybe the doctors couldn't have possibly known, right, that this was going to happen. So fortunately, it resulted in a miracle.
Emily Jones
Absolutely. A miracle.
Holly Worthington
Yeah. And the story reminds me of a story of my own, because God truly does work in mysterious ways. And there was one night where, I don't even know if you've heard the story, Emily, but Mom and dad had just gotten a new Suburban. And dad and I were like, let's take it out and try it in this deep snow that had just fallen that night. And so. Because, you know, it was four wheel drive and cool. Yeah, super smart. So we took it up in the foothills where the snow was really deep, where the roads were no longer plowed. This was late at night. I don't know what we were thinking. We just thought that this Suburban was, was invincible and could go anywhere because of that four wheel drive. Anyway, long story short, we got stuck in the snow up on the foothills near Idaho Falls, Idaho. And we're looking out, we couldn't even see the lights of the city anymore. We were so far out and we're just like, what are we going to do? I mean, it was below zero that night. So we gave mom our coats, she put our coats on, she started walking into town.
Emily Jones
Oh, my gosh.
Holly Worthington
And you know, we were scared she was going to get frostbitten, if not die. Walking out in the snow. She had a long.
Emily Jones
Mom, why didn't you send dad? Because.
Holly Worthington
I'll tell you why. Because mom, dad and I are both bigger than mom and she needed to put all the coats on to help her. So our coats were bigger and could be layered on top of Her. So, okay. That's what we chose to do. Mom started heading out. Dad and I sat there in the dark, and we were terrified. Like, what are we going to do? Dad was so mad at himself. And I said, dad, let's say a prayer. And he was like, okay. So we said a prayer. And it was interesting because I just said, you know what? If we really have faith, then we're going to be okay. This is going to work out somehow. We can even just somehow make the car move. I just. I know that it's going to be okay. And dad was kind of looking at me like I was young and naive and a little crazy, but he was like, yeah, we've got to have faith. And as we sat there, we suddenly saw lights in the distance, like headlights coming up the opposite way, up this road where it was not plowed at all, where there was nothing but a distant lake.
Emily Jones
Another crazy driver.
Holly Worthington
Another crazy driver. Well, it turns out this driver was actually drunk and had come from the opposite direction. And I don't even know how this guy got through the sn. It was amazing that he even got through it to get to where we were. But we flagged him down. He picked us up. By the time we picked up mom, she did have frostbite starting. And I don't know what would have happened if she'd had to go that whole way. It was just amazing that God answered our prayer that night just in such a clear way, but also through a drunk person. And it just made me realize, like, he can use anyone, anyone who's willing to be used by him.
Emily Jones
Yeah, that's.
Holly Worthington
We don't have to be perfect. We all make mistakes, every single one of us. And God loves us anyway. Yeah. And I think that George Pickering Senior is a great example of that.
Emily Jones
Yeah, absolutely. You know, this actually reminds me of a story that I read recently in the Bible. When there's these men, and their friend becomes paralyzed, and they want to take him to Jesus to heal him. And. But Jesus is like inside of a home they can't get in. And so they take their friend up on the roof, they break a hole in the roof, and then they lower their friend down and lay him at the feet of Jesus. And it just, you know, maybe there was a better way. Maybe they could have figured out how to get through the front door. But they were desperate, and they, you know, resulted in some pretty extreme actions because they wanted to lay their friend at the feet of Jesus.
Holly Worthington
And so, yeah, you can see the same kind of desperate love and faith in this father who believed his son still had a chance.
Emily Jones
Yeah.
Holly Worthington
And I wanted to end with a quote from George that he said right after he got baptized. Can you read that, Emily?
Emily Jones
Sure. I love him so much. I think it's a miracle, a blessing. It's beautiful he's still alive and well.
Holly Worthington
