Katie
She didn't have a lot of time left and she was in a lot of pain. Her leg had been crushed. So that's when she asked the rescue workers if they could just pause and say a prayer out loud with her.
Holly
This is Miracles in the news. Welcome back to Miracles in the news. So today's news story actually happened 11 years ago?
Katie
Yep.
Holly
But it sounds like there's some mystery and really cool miracles, so I'm here for it.
Katie
Yes. So our story starts actually in Hannibal, Missouri, when a drunk driver crossed the center line of traffic on a two lane highway and crashed head first into Katie Lentz's convertible. Her car was turned into a mangled heap of metal. She was critically injured. She was still conscious, but she was pinned between her steering wheel and her seat. Rescue crews tried for about an hour to cut Katie out of her vehicle, but she had an older Mercedes with really thick metal and their tools were not sharp enough to cut through the metal. So she was trapped in her vehicle. The medical team there was keeping track of her vitals and unfortunately they said that she was failing fast.
Ryan
Sheriff's deputy Richard Adair won't forget. When the fire chief turned to him.
Richard
In despair, he was concerned because he was out of options. The tools weren't working. It was by that time, I said almost an hour. He said, I don't know how we're going to get her out.
First Responder 1
Oh, man.
Holly
If the firefighters can't get her out, like, who else are you going to call? What else are you going to do?
Katie
Right.
Holly
I always assume that you call 911 and the first responders are going to have all the answers. But yeah, I mean, I guess every case is different, but it's like, what else do you do?
Katie
I know you just think they're going to be able to get you out.
Holly
Right.
Katie
But it had to be so scary for poor Katie because she could hear all of this going on and she knew the situation was dire. She knew that she didn't have a lot of time left. And she was in a lot of pain. Her leg had been crushed. So that's when she asked the rescue workers if they could just pause and say a prayer out loud with her.
Holly
Wow. I mean, that is amazing faith. I'm sure I would probably just be like, don't stop. Get me out of here, you know?
Katie
I know. Same. But what was even more amazing was that as if on cue, a mysterious stranger just stepped out from behind the emergency vehicles.
Ryan
That's when first responders say a man who looked like a Catholic priest seemed.
Father Dowling
To appear out of nowhere.
Ryan
Despite a two mile perimeter blocking the scene.
Father Dowling
He began to pray and use the anointing oil. There was a calmness that to me, seemed to come over the entire scene.
Holly
Wow. Okay, so they said there's a two mile perimeter. Like where did he come from? It looks like in the video they're surrounded by far farmland.
Katie
Yeah. In fact, some of the firefighters even thought the priest had just walked right out from the cornfield next to them onto the scene. And honestly, no one knew where he had come from. But what he did was amazing. He blessed Katie with anointing oil, and he prayed for Katie to be calm and to be comforted. He prayed that the firefighters would be able to cut Katie out of her car and that their tools would work.
First Responder 2
The Hannibal Fire Department showed up right after that prayer with fresh equipment and was able to finish the extrication. After getting Katie safely into the air evac helicopter. At least a dozen other rescue workers turned around to thank the priest, who was nowhere in sight.
Holly
Where did he go?
Katie
Okay, so that's what everybody wanted to know afterwards. The rescue workers were so confused. And of course, they were so grateful for this mysterious priest who had calmed them, who had calmed the whole situation and helped everybody. And here's what one first responder said.
Father Dowling
It is my feeling that it was nothing more than sheer faith and nothing short of a miracle.
Holly
Miracle. Okay, so do you think that he was an angel or did they ever find him?
Katie
Well, that's the thing. They could not find the priest at all. He completely disappeared. And out of the 80 pictures that they took that day, they took 80 photos, and he didn't appear in a single one of them. So word began spreading through the news, through everyone, that he may have actually been more than an earthly angel. Like maybe he really was a heavenly being.
Holly
Wow, that's so cool. I mean, especially because there were so many people there who Witnessed that.
Katie
Yeah, it was crazy. And it was a total mystery. And all of the news stations at the time were calling the priest an angel priest, and they were trying to figure out what really happened. But three days later, the mystery was solved. It turns out that the priest was an earthly angel after all.
Holly
Surprise.
Katie
Yeah. A few days after the crash, Father Patrick Dowling stepped forward as the mysterious angel priest.
Holly
It's me, guys. It was me the whole time.
Katie
Yeah, exactly. So Father Dowling said that he had been heading to mass as a substitute for another priest who'd gotten sick. And he'd come up on this big traffic jam. You know, they were diverting traffic. He knew that there was an accident up ahead. And so he finally got his car as close as he could. He parked it, and then he walked the rest of the way until he got to the scene of the accident. And there he asked a sheriff if he could proceed to Katie and was given permission. And then, of course, he anointed Katie with oil. He prayed with everyone there and especially prayed that the tools would be able to work and cut her out of her car. And what he did just calmed everyone. Everyone on scene said that it turned the whole situation around. And this is what Father Dowling himself said.
Father Dowling
I didn't hide, and I just stood there praying. It is almighty God who intervened because there was something exceptional there in the manner of her rescue.
Holly
I think it's funny that he's like, I wasn't trying to hide.
Katie
I know. He's like, come on, people. I wasn't trying to make this mysterious.
Holly
I mean, he was not a literal angel, but he certainly was an earthly angel. And I think it's so cool that he was, you know, just a substitute that day. It's not like he was heading to his regular job. And how often do we hear things like this where plans change, something comes up, something different happens to put somebody in the right place at the right time.
Katie
Yeah, we hear it so often. Yeah.
Holly
I don't know if you remember this story or not, Holly, but it reminds me of the time where we went. We have some friends who have a houseboat, and they invited us to spend a week on their houseboat. And this beautiful lake, massive lake. It took us over an hour boat ride just to get to our spot. We were going through these winding canyons. We found this very secluded beach. I mean, we only saw maybe one or two other boats a day there. It was so beautiful. And on the top of their houseboat, they have a water slide. And the kids were constantly Going down the water slide. But my daughter. So fun. But my daughter was all wet, running up the stairs to go up to the slide. These are metal.
Katie
I can already see where this is going.
Holly
She trips and falls, smashes her nose right on the corner of this metal stair. And instantly we hear screams. I didn't see it happen, but I heard the screams. I come out, and her nose is completely deformed. And I was dying inside. I was just trying to be brave for her, but I started crying. I held her. It was like, what do I do? We are an hour away from the closest boat dock, and then we're another hour away to the closest doctor's office. We have no cell coverage. I have no idea what to do in this scenario. I just prayed. I was like, I'm just going to say a prayer. God help me. What do I do? I don't. Do I take her right now. What do I do? And right then, there was a boat that pulled around this corner of this little canyon. And I just was like, hey, I said to my friend Heather, ask if they have a doctor on the boat. And so it was very awkward for her, but she yelled out to this boat, flagged him down, and said, excuse me, do you happen to have a doctor on the boat? And this woman stands up and says, I'm not a doctor, but I am an ER nurse.
Katie
Oh, my gosh.
Holly
And she came and she checked out my daughter, and she. I mean, really. She told us that swelling would. Oh, yeah, the swelling. She told us the swelling would have to go down before a doctor could even, you know, examine her and figure out what to do next. And so she told us there wasn't an emergency. Just ice it for now.
Katie
But did you have ice?
Holly
We had ice, yes. Oh, good. But it was such a answer to my prayer and exactly what I needed in that moment to, like, have a nurse check it out and tell me the steps to take. And I look back on that, and I think we were in the most secluded part of this lake. Like, we saw maybe one or two boats a day. And the fact that it was the moment that I was praying, asking God what I should do, that this boat comes around the corner, there's an ER nurse. Like, I just knew that was a direct answer to my prayers from God.
Katie
Yeah. And just like this priest who just happened to be going to substitute for.
Holly
Somebody else, shows up out of nowhere.
Katie
Yeah. Not his. Not his normal routine. He. He was out of his normal routine, and yet he was where he needed to be.
Holly
He was sent By God. Yeah.
Katie
Yeah. So Katie was later able to meet Father Dowling in person. So here's a little clip from that.
First Responder 2
Friday's meeting between Katie and Father Dowling came on Katie's 20th birthday. A birthday that might not have come without the help of everyone involved in rescuing her from this head on collision.
First Responder 1
So nice to be able to talk to you and meet you and understand who you are is not such a mystery anymore. And I'm so thankful you were there and just to give us all a sense of calmness. And I really appreciate that without you, the story wouldn't have gone where it was. So I know you were only doing what you were called to do.
Father Dowling
I'm very happy to see her doing so.
Holly
You know, it's so interesting to me, something that we hear people often say, you know, on, in comments, online or wherever, is that when we give credit to God, somehow that takes away credit from the first responders and these heroes. And that could not be further from the truth.
Katie
No, not at all.
Holly
I mean these, we absolutely honor these first responders. They were heroes. That's exactly what they were.
Katie
Oh, absolutely.
Holly
Heroes.
Katie
Yeah.
Holly
But I don't think that giving God credit takes anything away from them. I mean, they were still heroes and so was God.
Katie
Yes, both can be true.
Holly
Yeah.
Katie
But to me, what's so powerful about this story in particular is that the heroes, the first responders in the story were some of the very first people to acknowledge God's hand in it. And Katie was of course so grateful for everyone who helped her, helped her that day. I mean, she would not be where she is today without all those people helping her.
Holly
Right.
Katie
And what's also really powerful is that they are grateful for Katie as well because they were so inspired by her faith. And here's what some of the first responders said.
Father Dowling
The commitment that she had to God that day, it just made me think, man, if someone in that situation can stay that loyal, what's my excuse?
First Responder 3
In these times when all you hear are bad stories, man, it's really nice to hear the good ones and to see the good ones and know that there are still people out there that have that relationship with God and have that good family relationship and strength.
Richard
And it was kind of a realization that she was, she made it, she's. God saved her.
Holly
I think that's such a good reminder that when these hard things happen in our lives, sometimes you just gotta stop and pray out loud like Katie did.

Podcast Summary: The Miracle Files - "Miracle in the News: Mystery Priest Saves Teen Girl | Ep. 32"
Release Date: May 12, 2025
Introduction
In Episode 32 of The Miracle Files, hosted by Holly and Emily from Radio America, the duo delves into an extraordinary true crime story that emphasizes the prevalence of miracles over tragedies. This episode, titled "Miracle in the News: Mystery Priest Saves Teen Girl," explores a miraculous rescue that underscores themes of divine intervention, faith, and hope amidst dire circumstances.
The Incident: A Harrowing Car Accident
The episode begins with the recounting of a life-threatening accident that occurred 11 years prior in Hannibal, Missouri. Holly introduces the story with Katie Lentz as the central figure:
"Our story starts actually in Hannibal, Missouri, when a drunk driver crossed the center line of traffic on a two-lane highway and crashed head first into Katie Lentz's convertible. Her car was turned into a mangled heap of metal. She was critically injured. She was still conscious, but she was pinned between her steering wheel and her seat." ([00:53])
Katie elaborates on the severity of the situation:
"Rescue crews tried for about an hour to cut Katie out of her vehicle, but she had an older Mercedes with really thick metal and their tools were not sharp enough to cut through the metal. So she was trapped in her vehicle. The medical team there was keeping track of her vitals and unfortunately they said that she was failing fast." ([00:53])
Despair and a Prayer
As hope dwindled, Katie finds herself in excruciating pain with her leg crushed. In a moment of desperation, she asks the rescue workers to pause and pray with her:
"Her leg had been crushed. So that's when she asked the rescue workers if they could just pause and say a prayer out loud with her." ([02:16])
Holly reflects on the gravity of such a plea:
"Wow. I mean, that is amazing faith. I'm sure I would probably just be like, don't stop. Get me out of here, you know?" ([02:36])
The Mysterious Priest Appears
Just as the situation seemed bleak, a mysterious figure emerges from the surrounding farmland, despite a two-mile perimeter blocking the scene. This enigmatic man, resembling a Catholic priest, approaches the stranded Katie and begins to pray:
"A man who looked like a Catholic priest seemed to appear out of nowhere. He began to pray and use the anointing oil. There was a calmness that to me, seemed to come over the entire scene." ([03:00])
Firefighters observed the priest seemingly materialize from a nearby cornfield:
"Some of the firefighters even thought the priest had just walked right out from the cornfield next to them onto the scene." ([03:22])
Father Patrick Dowling's intervention was both spiritual and practical. He anointed Katie and prayed for the success of the rescue efforts:
"He prayed that the firefighters would be able to cut Katie out of her car and that their tools would work." ([03:22])
Miraculous Rescue and Vanishing Act
Shortly after Father Dowling's prayers, the Hannibal Fire Department arrived with fresh equipment, successfully extricating Katie from the wreckage. The first responders were left in awe as the mysterious priest vanished without a trace:
"After getting Katie safely into the air evac helicopter, at least a dozen other rescue workers turned around to thank the priest, who was nowhere in sight." ([04:06])
Further emphasizing the miracle, Katie notes that none of the 80 photos taken that day captured the priest:
"Out of the 80 pictures that they took that day, they took 80 photos, and he didn't appear in a single one of them." ([04:44])
Revelation and Confirmation
Three days post-accident, Father Dowling revealed himself as the mysterious priest. He explained that he was substituting for another priest and had driven past the accident scene to offer assistance:
"Father Dowling stepped forward as the mysterious angel priest. He had been heading to mass as a substitute for another priest who'd gotten sick. He knew that there was an accident up ahead... he parked his car as close as he could and walked the rest of the way to the scene." ([05:34])
Father Dowling humbly shared his perspective on the event:
"It is almighty God who intervened because there was something exceptional there in the manner of her rescue." ([06:36])
Connecting Personal Experiences and Faith
Holly and Katie draw parallels between Katie Lentz's story and their personal experiences of divine intervention. Holly shares a childhood memory where a genuine prayer was answered during a medical emergency:
"I just prayed. I was just going to say a prayer. God help me... and right then, there was a boat that pulled around this corner... an ER nurse appeared and helped my daughter." ([07:23] - [09:13])
They highlight how such moments reinforce the belief in a higher power orchestrating events for the greater good.
Reflections on Heroism and Faith
The hosts discuss the interplay between human heroes and divine assistance. They emphasize that acknowledging God's role does not diminish the valor of first responders:
"I don't think that giving God credit takes anything away from them. I mean, they were still heroes and so was God." ([11:04])
First responders involved in Katie's rescue expressed their admiration for her unwavering faith, which inspired them:
"The commitment that she had to God that day, it just made me think, man, if someone in that situation can stay that loyal, what's my excuse?" ([12:14])
Conclusion: Embracing Miracles in Everyday Life
Holly and Katie conclude the episode by encouraging listeners to remain open to the miracles that may occur in their own lives. They stress the importance of faith, gratitude, and recognizing the divine presence in moments of crisis.
"Don't forget to look for his light in your own lives." ([13:41])
They invite listeners to share their own miracles and stories, fostering a community grounded in faith and hope.
