And I'm Holly Worthington. We're two sisters who love a captivating true story, but we're also seeking more light in our lives.
Emily Jones
So we're on a mission to find and share unforgettable, uplifting stories of God's miracles. We hope you'll join us on this journey. Welcome back to the Miracle Files. We have another great story for you today about a pregnant woman named Marla and the crazy things that she went through. And, men, you don't have to skip this episode just to get off pregnancy. But, yeah, it's an incredible story.
Holly Worthington
Blake actually really loved this episode. So men, you got to stay for it. It's really good. But we do want to give a trigger warning to anyone who's dealt with fertil issues or who has dealt with infant loss or has had difficulties with childbirth. We just want you to know that this one might be a harder episode for you before we start.
Emily Jones
Yeah. I've had several friends who've struggled with that, and I know it can be such a challenging thing to go through. And if you are going through that, we want you to know we love you, we're thinking about you, we pray for you. And yeah. So, yep. All right, let's jump into this amazing story. In December 2020, Marla and her husband Sam had just come through a difficult season in their marriage when they both felt the same unmistakable impression from the Holy Spirit. They were meant to have another child. The timing seemed a bit precarious, with their marriage still healing. But the message was clear, and almost immediately, Marla was pregnant. The suddenness of it left them in awe.
Marla
I got pregnant right away, and it felt so divinely guided, and it felt like spiritual whiplash.
Emily Jones
Shortly after Marla got pregnant, her in laws did something strange and unexpected.
Marla
I got pregnant the very end of December, and I found out at the very beginning of January of 2021, and his parents had gone on a vacation to Arizona over the Holidays. And they came back and they walked in the kitchen and they put a house listing on our kitchen counter. And I was like, what is. And they said, oh, we just bought a house in Arizona. And we're like, you just bought a house in Arizona? What?
Holly Worthington
What?
Marla
What were you thinking?
Emily Jones
Marla was surprised and saddened that her in laws were suddenly moving away.
Marla
They're like, we actually can't move there until the end of May, but we bought this house and we are moving all of our stuff out and we are going to fully furnish that house. It's just going to sit there though, until May. And I thought they were crazy, to be honest. I was like, what? But they said they felt strongly about it.
Emily Jones
Over the next few weeks, the gloomy Utah winters weighed heavily on Marla. She was exhausted, sick and struggling. Her own parents lived in Arizona, and they suggested she come visit them for a few weeks.
Marla
They said, why don't you come down and we'll take care of you, we'll take care of your other three kids and you can just get some stuff, sunshine.
Emily Jones
It sounded like a welcome change and a great idea. But only a day later, that great idea became a nightmare.
Marla
The day after we arrived, I felt this gush of blood, and that gush was the worst feeling. I had never miscarried before and so I didn't understand, but I knew something was definitely wrong. And so I went to the bathroom and my husband came in and I'm like, I'm miscarrying. This must be what's happening.
Emily Jones
Marla and Sam were devastated. They rushed to the emergency room and waited in agony for doctors to search for a heartbeat. But there it was. Marla couldn't believe it. Her baby was still alive, nine weeks along. Relief swept over her, but it was short lived. The ultrasound revealed large subchorionic hemorrhages, pockets of blood wedged between the placenta and uterine wall. The doctors warned Marla that these hemorrhages could cause a placental abruption. The instruct was clear. Don't travel. Stay on bed rest. Wait. Marla was stunned. Don't travel. But she didn't live here. It was only supposed to be a visit.
Marla
So what was supposed to be a 10 day vacation is now a. You need to stay here until this is resolved.
Emily Jones
Marla's husband, Sam, had just started a new job that could work remotely, and that felt like a huge blessing. But with three busy children, Marla worried about moving in with her parents. It was one thing to visit, but a whole other to live there for an undetermined length of time. As Marla waited for her next appointment, she prayed for guidance. And suddenly her in laws made a generous offer.
Marla
And when we found out that I could no longer travel and we were stuck there, his parents said, well, wait, we just bought that house. We just bought that house and it is fully furnished and it's just sitting there. And that blew my mind.
Emily Jones
So Marla, Sam and their other children moved into her in laws vacant house, determined to make the best of an unusual situation.
Marla
So I'm taking it easy for a while and I'm feeling a lot of peace. Like I had said, the whole pregnancy had felt so guided and so I was just holding on to that. Okay, this is divine. This is going to be okay. I felt so much peace.
Holly Worthington

Emily Jones
With a place to stay temporarily, Marla and her family felt blessed and assured. But then a week later, at 11 weeks pregnant, came another gush of blood.
Marla
One morning I get my kids in the car, and we're driving, and I just start gushing blood again as I'm driving. And I quickly pull over and get back home and realize, okay, wow, this is a lot. I need to get back into the doctor. And my husband said, do you want me to come in with you to see the doctor? And I said, I'm sure it's fine. I'm sure it's just another bleeding episode. And they're gonna do an ultrasound and then send me home and tell me to rest more. And so I drop everyone off. I go to the doctor while I'm bleeding, and they do an ultrasound, and it is slow and it is quiet, and I go into the room to wait, and I wait there for a very long time.
Emily Jones
The doctor returned to the room and looked seriously into Marla's eyes. She then hit Marla with devastating news, her words echoing through Marla's brain.
Marla
And she's like, I am so sorry, but you're gonna lose this baby. And we don't know when you're going to lose this baby, but you're going to lose this baby because you've had a placental abruption, and your placenta is more than half the way off, and those pockets of blood are expanding so fast that it will just tear the placenta off. And we don't know if you're going to lose it any moment or if you're going to lose it in the next day or so, but we do know that you're going to lose the baby. And I was so unprepared for that because I had felt like it was so divine. I felt like this spirit was supposed to be in our family, and that piece had been so pervasive. And so I just wasn't expecting that whatsoever. It was just crushing to me that my body was the thing that was going to fall apart in this situation. I had often thought of miscarriages as being maybe something in the baby or there was a defect or something hadn't gone right. And so the baby would pass, and I had a very, very healthy baby. And in every ultrasound up to that point, they would say, wow, we're just so amazed at how lively your baby is. She's so alive. And they would use those words over and over. She is so lively. And so then as I leave, I'm thinking, wow, I have this beautiful little baby in there who's so, so lively, and it's just going to lose its life support. And that was something that I hadn't really ever thought about or grappled with. And so they said, you can schedule another appointment for a week out, but you're not going to make it. And so we just need, as soon as you start losing a lot of blood, we need to schedule you for your blood transfusions, and you need to go straight to the hospital.
Emily Jones
As Marla left the appointment, she felt numb. She felt like her own body was betraying her. After breaking the heart wrenching news to Sam, they ordered an expedited gender test. If this was the end, they needed closure. They needed to know more about the little life they already loved. The results came quickly. A girl. A sweet baby girl who they would never get to meet. The emotional pain was terrible. But then came the physical pain. Intense, throbbing pain. It came out of the blue, just days later. Marla felt a deep body wide ache unlike anything she'd felt before.
Marla
And there is one day in particular that my whole body hurt so bad, particularly my stomach.
Emily Jones
Marla remembered her doctor's words. You're going to lose the baby. With her placenta almost completely detached, there was no way the baby could survive. Its life depended entirely on that fragile connection for oxygen and nutrients. And once detached, a placenta cannot reattach. Marla feared this was the end. She looked to God for comfort. In the midst of her sorrow, I
Marla
had the distinct impression, come, your uterus is under construction. And I didn't quite know what to make of that.
Emily Jones
Her uterus was under construction. This thought made no sense to Marla's mind. But despite the odds, her heart continued to hope for a miracle.
Marla
Now every day is just like this waiting game. When am I going to pass this baby? When is the next gush of blood coming? When is that fully detaching? But at the same time, I'm processing. God does miracles. And I have felt a lot of peace. And is that peace that things are going to work out? Or is it peace that in the end, things are going to be okay? Like, eternally?
Emily Jones
One week later, Marla returned with Sam for another ultrasound. Her baby wasn't supposed to have made it this far. At the appointment, the ultrasound tech frowned.
Marla
And I have just been dying to see what is happening inside of me. And they do that ultrasound. And the ultrasound tech space is just like utter confusion. She looks at it, she's going through so many things. She stops and she's like, I don't understand what I'm seeing. I want you to go to the bathroom. Maybe it's because you have too much in your bladder. We need to figure out what's going on. So go to the bathroom, come back in. They redo the ultrasound again a whole other time. All these measurements, all these things, and I'm sitting there trying to figure out for myself what is going on.
Emily Jones
Marla and Sam were instructed to have a seat in the waiting room. With feelings of both hope and sorrow, they braced themselves for whatever news the doctor might bring. After what felt like an eternity, the doctor came out to the waiting room, a serious expression on her face, and with quiet gentleness, she delivered some unbelievable news.
Marla
They say, okay, well, so it looks like your planet of Senna is attached, and it looks like you do have some big subchorionic hemorrhages, and so we need to wait. You should not travel. You should not go anywhere. And I was looking at her, and I'm like, what do you mean? What do you mean? It's. It's attached. And she was like, well, it looks like it's attached. And I was like, I understand. But before it wasn't. And she gave me no explanation. And I even saw one thing that was very intriguing to me, and one was that the placenta that was before posterior, which means to the back, was now anterior to the front. And I said, wait a second. Wasn't my placenta on the other side of my uterus? And she said, oh, no, I'm sure that that was just a ultrasound tech mistake. I'm sure that they just labeled that incorrectly before she said, no, I mean, placentas don't cross a uterus. So that must have just been a mistake on our part.
Emily Jones
Marla was sure it hadn't been a mistake. But either way, she felt an overwhelming gratitude that her baby was still alive, still growing. While the doctors couldn't explain it, Marla could. And the only explanation was that this was a miracle. She knew her uterus had truly been under construction. God had told her he had been working in Marla's life, on her marriage, on her faith, and on her womb in ways that went beyond worldly understanding. The weeks turned into months. Marla remained in Arizona on extended bed rest. And even here, she saw God's fingerprints, the address of the home her in laws had bought, Milagro Avenue.
Marla
And if you know what Milagro means, Milagro is the Spanish word for miracle. And so we lived on Miracle Avenue. And that house was bought for us to experience a trial, but also the most magnificent miracle that we could realize what God can really do. Doctors and other people will say that things are done and there's no hope. And that there's nothing that can be done in a certain situation. It's too bleak. But God will come in and he will work miracles and he will change what was impossible to being a reality. That's what he did for our family.
Emily Jones
In April, on Marla's birthday, she was finally cleared to return home. By then, the ultrasound showed no hemorrhages at all and a completely normal pregnancy. And on September 8, at 39 weeks, Marla delivered a healthy baby girl. Her midwife held up the placenta and showed Marla the proof. Clear scar lines, evidence of where it had torn away and where it had reattached. Marla and Sam named their baby girl Eva Jane.
Marla
We really wanted to have her name be full of meaning for her because of what we knew that that could mean for her, knowing that she had been saved, her life had been given to her by God. And so we went to the hospital with three different names. And as soon as we delivered, my husband and I looked at each other and we were like, her name is Eva Jane. Eva means full of life, and Jane means by the grace of God. That way she can know that it's really just because of him, that she is that lively, lively girl that she is.
Emily Jones
And then one quiet day a month later, Marla found herself wondering. She couldn't quite shake it. She had to know one thing. She knew Eva Jane's life was a gift, but she just needed to see something for herself.
Marla
So I was so nervous, actually, once I thought that it was a miracle. I was really nervous to go back and actually look through all of them and think, like, was that actually a miracle or did that not actually really happen? And then I looked back at my earliest ultrasound from that ER visit, and the placenta was on the other side. And they had documented it and written it out. The placenta is posterior, and I delivered with an anterior placenta. It had definitely switched all the way across.
Emily Jones
As her heart swelled, Marla knew now with even more certainty than before, that she had been blessed with a miracle. She hadn't just imagined it. It was all real. Marla's gratitude to God was almost overwhelming. Today, Eva is four years old and just as vibrant as ever. Marla often thinks back to those words that carried her through. Under construction. Doctors said there was no chance, but God had the final word. And that word was life.

Emily Jones
wow.
Holly Worthington
Crazy story. Can you imagine getting stuck on vacation like that?
Emily Jones
Being pregnant? I know it would be wild, but at the same time, like, it's amazing how everything was, like, in place for their family.
Holly Worthington
Yeah.
Emily Jones
To be able to move into this house, this vacant house on this street called Milagro or Miracle Avenue, like, miracle. It's just all these little things that God did that's like, you know what? This is going to be really hard, but I've got you. Like, I'm aware of you. Yeah.
Holly Worthington
I love that. Can you imagine also getting that news about your baby? Like, it had to have been so absolutely heartbreaking to her. Scary to know that you are just carrying this baby that is going to pass. And I've had a couple of miscarriages myself. I know nothing to that extent, but I know how hard that is. Like, you have all those plans and dreams for this little one, and then to just have those go up in smoke is just devastating.
Emily Jones
I know. I mean, it's. To lose a child at any point would just be absolutely heartbreaking. And the sad reality is there are people who have to go through that. And, I mean, amazingly, Marla didn't have to. She had this wonderful miracle. But it's one of those questions that always comes up, like, why.
Marla
Why does one person.
Holly Worthington
Yeah, yeah.
Emily Jones
Why doesn't that happen for everyone? Yeah. But, yeah, Marla had a really cool perspective. I really like what she said about this. So let's play her sound bite to hear what she had to say. Okay.
Marla
I have this Instagram account, and this video about her just went viral, and people are asking, like, oh, that's Great for you. But, like, what about everyone else? And my answer about miracles is, I think it's complex that some miracles happen and some miracles don't, but it's also really simple. God honors our individuality, and he will parent us that way, and he will give us what we need. And knowing that he is so aware of us, I think is what I love. Because it's not that you don't receive a miracle because God isn't aware of you or he doesn't think you're good enough or anything like that. For some reason, we received a miracle, and I felt it very impressed on me. You need to share this miracle with as many people as possible. Like, this is not just your miracle. This is a miracle where you share what I am capable of doing. And so he does the impossible, and I'm just here to tell you about it.
Holly Worthington
Man, it's so tough when people don't receive the miracles they're asking for. And I mean, literally, sometimes begging God for.
Emily Jones
Right?
Holly Worthington
You know, it's so hard. And I kept thinking about Jack from the Mystery Boat. I don't know if you remember what he said, but he said sometimes we just have to hit the I believe button and just trust God that he has a plan.
Emily Jones
Well, and trust that even if you're going through a hard time, God can be there with you. He can help you get through whatever it is you're going through. So, yeah, absolutely. Yeah. I also love what Marla said about sharing her story to, you know, honor God and to share how good he is. She also said something that I thought was really interesting about her placenta.
Marla
I feel like the placenta is like a sermon in itself. This placenta is a life support. It is what gives life. And he is our life. He's the way, the truth, the life. And he is what made that life possible by healing that. And it just blows my mind. But the fact that you could see all those scars was just another testament. The scars are there, and they tell the story, just like his scars do. They tell a story. And I'm so glad that the scars stayed to tell that story.
Emily Jones
Yeah. I love that, because you think about Jesus. I mean, he didn't erase his scars when he was resurrected. Like, he chose to keep them so that we would never forget the love that he has for us. Yeah.
Holly Worthington
So powerful. And we have one last sound bite that we want to share today. Eva Jane is 4 years old, and we asked Marla if Eva Jane is still as lively as ever. And this is what she said.
Marla
Oh my goodness. Yes. She is so, so lively. She is. She's a real life Disney princess. That's what we always just say she is. She is so vibrant and so alive and it's really, really sweet to see that spir how it it just never stopped bouncing.
Emily Jones
Isn't she just so cute? She is the cutest little girl. Yes.
Holly Worthington
Someday maybe she'll be a Disney princess.
Emily Jones
I could see it.
