About Siwak Or Miswak

What did the prophet ﷺ say about the Miswak or Siwak? Should the wife use the husband’s miswak? And why? Miswak is better than a toothbrush? Let’s begin with the first Hadith, narrated Anas, Allah’s messengerﷺ, said, I have told you to repeatedly use the Miswak the prophet told you to repeatedly use the miswak.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ الْحَبْحَابِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسٌ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ” أَكْثَرْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي السِّوَاكِ “.

Narrated Anas: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “I have told you repeatedly to use the Siwak. (The Prophet (ﷺ) put emphasis on the use of the Siwak.)

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الأَنْصَارِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَنْبَسَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْكُوفِيُّ الْحَاسِبُ، حَدَّثَنِي كَثِيرٌ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ كَانَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَسْتَاكُ فَيُعْطِينِي السِّوَاكَ لأَغْسِلَهُ فَأَبْدَأُ بِهِ فَأَسْتَاكُ ثُمَّ أَغْسِلُهُ وَأَدْفَعُهُ إِلَيْهِ .

‘Aishah narrated: “The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) would clean his teeth with the Siwak, then he would give me the Siwak in order to wash it. So I would first use it myself, then wash it and return it.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا غَيْلاَنُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى، قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَهُوَ يَسْتَنُّ وَطَرَفُ السِّوَاكِ عَلَى لِسَانِهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ ” عَأْعَأْ ” .

It was narrated that Abu Musa said: “I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) when he was using the Siwak, and the end of the Siwak was on his toungue, and he was saying, “‘A’,’a’.”

It was narrated that abu Musa al-ash’ari, said, I came to the messenger of Allah ﷺ and he was using the siwak. And at the end of the siwak was on his tongue and he was saying, ‘Aa ’Aa ‘aa ’aa Alhamdulillah. We are always proud to follow the Sunnah, Now why should you instead of using a toothbrush, use a miswak, really quickly, three things.
