Scotty
Oh, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, hot. Hello and welcome to the Neuro Spicy News. Hot topic.
Sylvia
Super hot. Super spicy on a Friday. The surprising link between zinc and adhd.
Scotty
And that is my surprise.
Sylvia
We're back at it again. We've got shares in zinc and we're trying to get it up. Come on.
Scotty
Everyone else is out there going, I mean, it's probably over by now. This has come out. But maybe England won the World Cup. If they did, congratulations.
Sylvia
If England did win the World Cup. Look outside and see your street on
Scotty
fire and know that not every tattoo of an England flag you see is a racist thing.
Sylvia
There is a flag at the very top of my street that says football, not Farage.
Scotty
Yes. It is very, very important out there that the England flag is not a symbol of racism just because races use it. It is not a swastika. It is an England flag. And we are proud of. Well, I'm proud to be British because I'm actually Celtic more than I am English. English. But I love England. I love this country. I don't know how the hell we've gone this way, but.
Sylvia
But if England didn't win the World cup final. You suck.
Scotty
I hate you.
Sylvia
It was. It was rigged. Argentina.
Scotty
Oh, we should call Trump.
Sylvia
FIFA's corrupt.
Scotty
Yeah, we should call Trump and he can change it. He might actually do something useful.
Sylvia
Maybe Andy Burnham will be the Prime Minister at this point. By now, maybe they've rung him up and got. Hey up, lads. Listen here. Now, I know he's. I know he's like scout, but that's just the. That's the voice that I've come up with. He's just going to rock up and be like, northerners, we're cool.
Scotty
Come on.
Sylvia
Back of the.
Scotty
This is like the least professional news program.
Sylvia
We need some zinc. Right, get on with the story, sir.
Scotty
So I'm. I'm just going to say, before we actually do the story, I read a story like this, I can't actually find the one. I read adhd. This mentioned, and I mentioned it at the time, that zinc actually helps balance out depression and certain neurodivergent traits. And it especially helps with, like, adhd, anxiety, anger issues. It actually just balances out because what the person who came up with it suggested is that the neurodivergent people, specifically ADHD ones, even though it's the same thing, have an abundance of copper. And that it's the. When you have too much copper, that. That is essentially causing a lot of the negative side effects of being neurodivergent. And zinc balances out the copper. So the more zinc you have, the less copper you have. So that's why you take zinc. Not because zinc itself is really, like, special, is because it reduces the amount of copper you have. So I was like, I don't know if that's true. It sounds very interesting. So let's use me as a guinea pig, because taking a couple of zinc tablets each day is not harmful whatsoever. So there's no harm in it. It's not like I'm injecting myself with some new serum or anything and becoming bane.
Sylvia
Zinc is your ally.
Scotty
Zinc is my ally.
Sylvia
I was born in the zinc milks.
Scotty
I, I swam in the zinc.
Sylvia
I was taking zinc before I was even a man.
Scotty
Like I said, very professional. Yeah, if you want professional, you're in the wrong place.
Sylvia
This ain't it.
Scotty
This ain't sounds professional. At the beginning with our south park reference. Very professional. Anyway, zinc and Sylvia and I have been taking it and wow, it genuinely freaking. I have never been happier. Like, I have like, you know, had therapy and stuff to cope with my anger issues and, and you know, my self control and, and it really does help. You know, I, I don't buy as much stuff. I don't have like a, like I started watching Scooby Doo. I'm not surrounded by Scooby Doo merchandise. I'm not. I did think about changing my dog's name to Scooby Doo, but I didn't do that. And, and I, and I love Scooby Doo, but I'm not surrounded by Scooby Doo stuff. I'm just like, no, I'm just enjoying it for what it is. So I, and obviously correlation isn't causation, but I have been taking the zinc now for over two months and it has made a difference. I am, I just don't get depressed, I don't get sad. I'm just happy. And I am sporadically taking my ADHD meds. So if I go like three or four days without them, I, the only difference that I actually notice is that I get more tired.
Sylvia
Yeah, no, I've noticed that.
Scotty
So I'm wondering if I've just become dependent on ADHD medication that when I go without them it's actually having a negative effect and making me tired. So I'm not saying I'm going to stop taking them, but there might be a time where I feel safe enough to be like, safe enough. I did it for like over 40 years, but there might be a time where I'm like, do you know what? I'm just going to go without it for like two weeks, Try and get over the tiredness without taking ADHD med. And maybe, maybe I actually don't need them.
Sylvia
That's interesting. Well, let's go into this article.
Scotty
That's a huge maybe, by the way. I'm not suggesting that anybody else does that. There's no medical science. I am the guinea pig. Let me ruin my own life. Don't ruin your Precious lives. We love you. You're beautiful. We appreciate you for being here. Just wait until I've done it and then you do it. But, yeah, you read the article because you're better at reading stuff than I am.
Sylvia
Cool. All right, let's take a little deep. Let's dive deeper into the science. So it says, imagine your brain is a bustling city with a complex electrical grid. For that grid to work smoothly, it needs the right materials to build and maintain all its connections. Zinc is one of those essential materials. In fact, it acts as a vital helper for over 300 enzymes and proteins that manage everything from your immune system to how your cells grow. Now, that is what I'm constantly being told about. Dude, protein, protein, protein. If you've got ADHD protein, you need lots of protein. Chicken need the gains, bro. You need the gains so your life doesn't fall apart. So why zinc matters for the brain. Its role becomes even more critical for ADHD people because of its direct impact on neurotransmitters. These are the chemical messengers like dopamine and neuropinephrine. I've never heard that word before, but it sounds interesting that sit at the very centre of focus, motivation and impulse control. These are the exact areas where ADHD presents its biggest challenges. Without enough zinc, this intricate communication network can start to lag, leading to symptoms we recognize as classic adhd, like trouble staying on task, poor organization and impulsivity. This isn't just a theory. A growing body of scientific research backs it up. A major 2021 meta analysis, which combined data from dozens of studies worldwide, found that children and teens with ADHD consistently had lower zinc levels than their peers. 26% of kids with ADHD compared to just 3.3% in neurotypical children. That's. That's a big difference. So zinc's key roles in the ADHD brain. Zinc assists neurotransmitter balance in synthesizing and regulating dopamine for the focus chemical. And the connection to the ADHD symptom is an imbalance can lead to inattention, low motivation and poor executive function, which I just struggle with in general brain development. It supports the growth and migration of neurons in a development brain. And the connection to the symptom is a deficiency can affect neurodevelopment. Hormone regulation helps produce melatonin, which regulates sleep wake cycles. And a shortage can contribute to the sleep problems commonly seen in adhd. Which is the thing I struggle with the most is just never feeling fully awake.
Scotty
That's the other thing I forgot to say, when I take zinc in the evening, I sleep better. I. And until I, I haven't even thought about that. I've realized that my actual sleep has been better lately. And I just thought, oh, it's because I'm so tired, because I didn't take the ADHD meds. But even when I do take the ADHD meds, when I take zinc in the evening, I definitely feel like I have a deeper sleep.
Sylvia
I'm gonna try that because they say take two a day, so maybe I'll take one in the morning and then one like an hour before bed.
Scotty
I'll just take two when I go to bed. Like, it, it's, it's not like they have like an immediate effect. It's not like taking your ADHD meds and suddenly you, oh, I'm awake. I'm alive, I'm alive. It works. Now, it's a gradual thing, but certainly. And this is, this is correlation causation, you know, but in my experience lately, when I've been having slow meltdowns because I don't really have snap meltdowns very often, like, like so rare. Whereas I used to have them more often than I care to admit, but I rarely have them now. But I do have those slow burn meltdowns when it's just overstimulation over stimulation plus tiredness plus, like, you know, things going wrong. And, and I'm just like, I cannot cope. And I can feel that meltdown coming. I can feel it like a slow heart attack. And I take a couple of zinc and then a couple of hours later I'm like, la, la la la la. Let's do this. Everything's fine now, no problems at all. That is how it affects me. Maybe that's a placebo. Maybe.
Sylvia
Could be.
Scotty
But even if it is a placebo, I mean, it does, it probably does the same. But I'm just saying as far as like stopping a meltdown, maybe it is a placebo. But if a placebo works, then it's placebo. Then it works.
Sylvia
You know, they call natural medicine that works. Yeah, medicine.
Pablo Torre
Medicine.
Sylvia
Yeah.
Scotty
Because if I can trick my brain into not having a meltdown, then trick away my friend.
Sylvia
Yeah, I'm happy. Brainwashed by call me the Loki of autism.
Scotty
I will definitely be tricking myself.
Sylvia
Yep. So here's who is at a higher risk of zinc deficiency. Picky eaters. So this is with selective diets often miss out on zinc rich foods like meat, beans and nuts. This is especially common for those with sensory sensitivities which can go hand in hand, obviously with neurodivergence. Plant based diets, vegetarian and vegan diets can be incredibly healthy. They need a bit more planning to ensure you're getting enough zinc. I know a lot of justice sensitive, neurodivergent people that are vegetarian and vegan and they're always knackered. No, I'm just, it's just something that I've never seen my social circle.
Scotty
So if you started on the zinc, she says it's given her more energy and she, she definitely is a lot more chill and calm when, when she's been having the zinc as well. Because like I said, the, the original article that I lost was talking about its relation to. Its original relation to depression and anxiety because of the amounts of copper, which obviously this article is not mentioning that, which is I find really interesting because I didn't know all of this. So I've only actually just found out all of this stuff today because my original thing was that it said that, you know, it helps with anxiety and depression, which a lot of neurodivergent people suffer from. And when I say suffer, anxiety and depression is, is definitely suffering. I do feel suffering when I'm having that. But that's why I started taking in the first place because I thought, well, maybe it will help with my issues. And it absolutely did. Now I'm finding out about all of this new stuff, which is as new to me as it is to you, audience, and to you, Scotty. This is not why I started taking it, but this is a huge reason why everybody listening probably should, probably should also, especially, and I said this to Scotty beforehand, especially those who are undiagnosed or on the waiting list and, or, or cannot or do not reach the criteria of ADHD or autism because it's the same brain. Let me keep going on about this. It's. This is not. This article might say adhd, but it should just say neurodivergence. This will help you whether you're autistic, dyslexic, PTSD absolutely will help you with PTSD as well. ADHD I believe, and I'm not, there's not guarantee I'm not doctor but I do believe this will help with just general neurodivergent negative behaviors and negative impacts of having a neurodivergent brain.
Sylvia
Oh, I totally agree, dude. Because all of the things that it's discussing, the things that I struggle with the most, the most debilitating part of my neurodivergent brain. Brain is my Grogginess. And when I wake up in the morning and when I go to sleep, my sleep cycle and just my overall energy levels, like I just fluctuate. I go from being hyper to crash out like so quickly. And it's about sort of finding a balance. But apparently other than taking a zinc supplement, there are zinc rich foods. Oysters are apparently the top thing, but they're disgusting. Just not for me. Red meat, like beef and lamb, poultry, turkey and chicken. So again, it's reinforcing a protein diet.
Scotty
I do eat a lot of chicken.
Sylvia
Is ADHD affirming? Pumpkin seeds, lentils, chickpeas, cashews and fortified cereals. I love a cashew. Always loved cashews. Especially like the, the honey roast.
Scotty
Not great for you, but they are. Yeah, it makes her feel good. This is my new ADHD medication.
Sylvia
So other good food sources is crab and lobster, whole grains, cheese, yogurt. Again, poor crabs, they're like, please leave me alone.
Scotty
No, you're full of Z. How about that?
Sylvia
All the, all you crustaceans coming here, giving it all that, there's cottage cheese as well is something that I keep seeing a lot of.
Scotty
I like, I really like cottage.
Sylvia
People keep saying have cottage cheese with honey on it is apparently a game changer.
Scotty
I like cottage cheese with hot sauce.
Sylvia
Oh, give that a try.
Scotty
Sauce. Mix it up and you don't even have to take it out of the pot. It's like a yogurt. Open up, you get the little pots of cottage cheese, like a half size one. Open up, stick some more sauce, swirl it around.
Sylvia
Well, good to know. So let's get to frequently asked questions about zinc and ADHD would fall into this. Can zinc replace ADHD medication? The answer here is no. It's critical to see zinc as a supportive nutrient, not as a replacement for prescription. While some research points to a connection between low zinc and ADHD symptoms, supplementation is what we call adjunctive therapy. It's designed to work alongside, not in place of primary treatments like stimulants. Think of it this way. Your medication is the engine. Zinc is like high quality oil that helps the engine run more smoothly. It might, it might boost your medication's effectiveness or fill a nutritional gap that makes symptoms worse. But it doesn't do the engine's job. Always talk to your doctor before changing anything about your medication.
Scotty
Yeah, exactly. But I'm not going to do that because I'm mad. So I'm just going to stop taking adhd. No, I'm not gonna.
Sylvia
No, don't do that. We're not endorsing that, just putting that straight out there. Whatever he says, I'm not involved. Your honor, I'm.
Scotty
I'm going to test it, but. But only not. Not to like, stop forever. But I'm just. I'm just curious, like, if I stop for a couple of weeks to see how, what will that do? I mean, it's not like, you know, I mean, we. I've been a couple of weeks without him loads of times.
Sylvia
Oh, yeah. Sometimes I forget to take it.
Scotty
I am absolutely like, not. If I wasn't taking it every day, I would feel the effects of not taking every day. Whereas I think there was one time on holiday I didn't take it days. I literally just kept forgetting. But I was taking the zincs and I literally didn't.
Sylvia
You didn't have as much of a drop off?
Scotty
Yeah, I didn't have any negative effects whatsoever. But then I started taking it again because I was like, oh, I remember to take it. So it could be that, you know, you don't stop taking it. Absolutely don't stop taking it. But I might not have to take it as much.
Sylvia
There's the thing that I do because I'm on instant release. I have like, my tablets come in tens and fives, right?
Scotty
Yeah. Whereas I'm on the slow release thing.
Sylvia
So I sometimes on some days I'll take 20, on other days I'll take 30. On some days I'll forget to take it and then I'll just take five in an evening. And it's always in my system. It's just not always as the same, the same dose. But then there have been days where I've not taken it for a few days and then I take a 20 and I'm like, R2D.
Podcast Host 2
Oh,
Sylvia
wow. So, yeah, there's. There is a bit of that. So I don't think I've ever had that.
Scotty
Like, everyone talks about this, like, oh, I've taken the medication. Suddenly I'm like, w. Like they have this like, oh, glorious moment.
Sylvia
Oh, I feel freaking. Like I can look out the street, dude, and see the. The buzz of the medication running towards me. Being like, you want to go?
Scotty
Like, most people, Sylvia, everybody describes this, like, difference. I've never felt different. The only difference to me that I felt was that I don't get angry. And I've dealt with that anger in a different way. And the zinc is definitely helping with the anger. So by not taking the medication, for me, I don't think it has that big of an effect. I think I have so much adhd, it's impossible to calm it. It's just impossible. I think that I might have to take like a hundred milligrams to feel effect because 36s just bounce off me like a BB on a freight train. I don't know, I. I just don't experience the medication effect like anybody else when, when I talk to them. Everybody experiences.
Sylvia
Yeah, you are a bit of an outlier when it comes to that. And it does, it does say here in the article, if you take it daily, it can take eight to 12 weeks to have that consistent sort of in your bloodstream. What they call like a half life.
Scotty
Yeah. Which is why I waited this long to talk about this, because I was like, okay, maybe it's a placebo at the beginning that I was feeling better, but it's been eight weeks, been more than eight weeks now. And I feel just great. Sylvia feels great. It's just great. I fully recommend this.
Sylvia
We've got to say this. It would be fair if we didn't. The end of the article, it says, are there any risks of taking zinc for adhd? And it says the main risk with zinc supplementation is taking too much, which is generally safe in the right amounts. Excessive intake can cause a few problems. In the short term, it can create nausea or stomach cramps, constipation. Taking it with a meal usually helps. The biggest concern in long term overuse is that it can throw your body's mineral balance by interfering with copper. So, you know, we were saying if we have too much copper, which is a weird thing the other way.
Scotty
Yeah, but like I said in this article, it doesn't mention, like, the abundance of copper. So obviously that is a completely different scientific research of why you should have zinc because, because it does this to copper. And this, this other researcher that I was reading about was saying that we have too much copper and that's what causes depression and anxiety. Because again, this doesn't say it helps with depression, anxiety. So there's multiple reasons that you should be taking two little, teeny, tiny, teeny, teeny, teeny, teeny, tiny little zinc tablets each day, preferably with a meal.
Sylvia
So you're telling me that licking all those pennies as a kid wasn't good for me?
Scotty
Did they taste nice then it was good for him.
Sylvia
It's like all those copper pennies, I'm
Scotty
like, oh, no, I like the stem.
Sylvia
I like how they've made me feel.
Scotty
See, I wonder, does, does everyone's blood taste of copper? Is it just ADHD people's. We have an abundance of copper.
Sylvia
I've now got the image of a vampire taking about out of me and going, ah, there's too much copper in these vi.
Scotty
Why do you taste like change? Oh, tastes like pennies. What is your vampire freaking Arnold Schwarzenegger?
Sylvia
No, he isn't. If it was like, I'd be like,
Scotty
come on, give me the blood.
Sylvia
Give it to me. Now that's a bit different. If it's like, come on, show me your leadership capabilities. Bring me the blood. Okay, this show is descended into madness. Right, we're done. Bye everybody. That's been your hot topic for this week. Take the zinc, see how you feel. I'm not buying shares in it, don't worry. I'm just intrigued to see how it makes me feel. Bye everybody.
Scotty
Nightly. Bye.
