In Part one, we uncovered the history and heard first hand accounts from those who claim something still remains inside this historic structure. But tonight we finally step inside ourselves as Square Root Kava Bar closes for the evening and staff head home owner Tracy gives us full access to explore the building after dark. Joining me are psychic medium Kate the Brave along with a new student medium experiencing the location for the first time. Together we'll walk the stairwells, hallways, the kitchen loft and hidden rooms at the center of decades of rumors of paranormal claims, hoping to gather new clues and perhaps uncover pieces of the mystery surrounding this Texas landmark known as the Old Rock Store. These days, with the endless highway construction, temporary feeder roads, concrete barricades and traffic weaving beneath the overpasses, it's even easier to miss. But tucked against the edge of that chaos, almost impossibly close to the highway itself, stands the old Rock Store. Its original limestone facade still faces the road just as it has for well over a century, the building now nearly pressed against the temporary feeder lane running beneath the elevated highway above, and despite all the development surrounding it, the structure still feels strangely frozen in time. Inside, the layout of the building is surprisingly sprawling and maze like. At the very front of the lower floor sits the old kitchen area. Near the boarded up front entrance and windows are a set of large industrial dishwashing sinks, and directly beside them is one of the building's most infamous locations, a narrow wooden staircase that rises sharply into a dark upstairs room above. Behind the sinks is the Cava Pressing Room, where Square Root prepares their cava today. Further back still, within the kitchen space, are the pizza ovens, continuing a tradition from the building's years as Austin Pizza Garden, when the smell of fresh pizza dough once filled these halls daily. Beyond the kitchen, the building opens into the main coffee bar and lobby area. Espresso machines hum beside pastry displays and tables where patrons gather throughout the day. This is also the primary entrance facing the parking lot. Architecturally, this part of the building is unique because half of the upstairs overlooks the lobby below like a loft or balcony. Against the back wall is a switchback staircase leading upward, a staircase many former employees and guests have associated with feelings of unease, reports of being touched, and even stories of people feeling shoved or having their hair pulled. Past the coffee bar, two narrow hallways stretch toward the rear of the building, wrapping around a set of bathrooms before opening into the Cava Bar lounge itself, and the atmosphere changes immediately. The Kava bar is dim, warm and almost theatrical, anchored by a massive bar, a large mirror, an old upright piano, couches, lounge chairs Scattered tables and a beautiful stone fireplace. And a far back door opens out onto the patio and stage beyond. Moving upstairs, at the top of that switchback stairwell is the loft overlooking the coffee shop below. A small manager's office sits against this back wall. And moving toward the front of the building, back in the direction of the highway, you pass through a beaded curtain into a large upstairs hallway and storage area partitioned into separate spaces. Continuing forward and to the left, an exterior door opens out onto a large limestone staircase descending outside the building and just inside this, running parallel to it, is that original interior staircase, dropping back down into the kitchen below. But upstairs next to that stairwell, is the last large upstairs room, currently rented out by a watchmaker who uses this space as a workshop and office. This entire side of the structure, from the front facade and kitchen and the coffee bar to the upstairs workshop and loft areas, is part of the original limestone building constructed by James Andrew Patton in 1898, a building that, according to many who have worked inside of it for decades, may not be entirely empty. It was the evening of April 19, and for the first time during this investigation, my team and I were being given full access to the Old Rock store. After hours, square root Cava Bar co owner Tracy had graciously agreed to stay overnight with us, allowing us to explore this historic building completely free of customers, staff, and distractions once closing time had arrived. Joining me tonight was my paranormal partner in crime, Alexis, along with two mediums. One was returning medium, Kate the Brave, who was traveling up from San Antonio. The other was Alejandro, a developing student medium, and Alexis's partner, who some of you may briefly remember from a few of our more recent investigations. Unfortunately, team member Franklin was unavailable this evening, so our core team for the night would be just the four of us, along with our friend Meg, who had kindly joined us to photograph the investigation. Meg has intuitive gifts as well, but for this particular night, we wanted to keep our focus primarily on Kate and Alejandro's impressions and experiences inside the building. I arrived around 8pm The Cava Bar wouldn't officially close until 10pm but we already had access to the vacant upstairs areas, and I wanted time to brief Alexis on the history of the case and some of the interviews I conducted leading up to this investigation. Importantly, both Kate and Alejandro had been kept completely in the dark about this location. As we always do, Kate was driving up separately from San Antonio, and once she reached a rendezvous point a few miles away, Alexis would guide her to the Old Rock store. Alejandro, meanwhile, had ridden up with Alexis earlier that evening, but had intentionally not been told where we were taking him. As a handful of remaining patrons relaxed in the Cava bar lounge downstairs, I asked Alejandro to sit quietly alone in the hallway between the coffee bar and the Kava bar area. With no information about the building, no ghost stories, and no historical context, he would just spend time simply absorbing the environment and writing down any impressions that came to him. Meanwhile, Tracy began guiding Alexis and me through the building. Starting upstairs, it's me and Alexis walking through with one of the owners, Tracy. We've come up to the second story loft area, and there's a back office. And we just wanted to document some of the stories that Tracy's gonna share about some of the feelings and things that have happened up here.
B
So in this office. I was told when we first moved in that this office was. Had some demonic spirits. They've only actually experienced one thing where I was working in the office door I had open, and it just kind of slammed shut. So I went to kind of go grab it, and it didn't open. And of course, the. The sheer panic just kind of sets in. But then, you know, I tried again, and then the door opened. So I don't know that this also has, like, the H vac in here, and so it was possible that it maybe had kicked on, but this room does slope a little bit, and so the door is pretty natural, just leaving it open. So it definitely was an odd experience. But other than that, I don't know that I've felt anything in here.
A
It's a pretty heavy door, and it doesn't, like, naturally go that way. It swings this way. Can I shut it? Is it okay?
B
Yeah,
A
Yeah, it's pretty.
C
And you're saying it's slammed.
B
It did slam.
A
It slammed. Okay. That is. That's pretty significant for that.
B
I have been in here multiple times since then, and again, occasionally I work up here with the door shut, so. And I feel fine. I mean, there's no windows in here, so sometimes it gets a little claustrophobic, especially now that the AC is not working. It's a little warm. Right. And so you're like. So again, it's been a little while since I've worked up here, but.
A
And just note, there's no windows. It's also at a kind of odd slant. The roof is real sharp slanting down, and it's below kind of at my chest level, where the bottom of the roof hits the wall on the backside. Just to kind of describe it a little bit, it's a really small. I would Say, I don't know, 40 square feet, maybe. Tiny little office. Now, we're going to progress through the loft and go to this back area.
B
So this is technically a storage area. Again, just coming off of the loft, just right outside here. I'm going to move. We just have partition here because we do have a tenant up here.
A
Oh, yeah, that's right.
B
This is an exterior door. And so. And you see those from the outside. This is where that door is. So this is kind of his foyer. And then again, just the storage that we've been kind of clearing out. So this is Du Brain Watches. He's a watchmaker. He's been here longer than we have, so he has given us access to his front space here. So what I know is when Austin Pizza Garden was here, they had tables up here and people would come up to eat up here in this front room. So, of course, now, as I said, Dufresne Watches is here, so he's got it a lot more cozy. It's appointment only. So his clients come up here and select their watches and all the components in there, and you see some of them displayed here. And then I think he makes the watches back there in that corner. But again, this is one of the story, or I guess all of the stories mostly originate upstairs in this room, again in this hallway that we just walked in through. A lot of the stories originate from here that I've heard.
A
And is this where there's a stairwell that goes into the kitchen?
B
Yeah, we'll go ahead and we'll walk down that way. So at the top of the stairs. And again, a lot of the stories are from. I believe her name is Rosa in her white wedding dress. A lot of people have seen her at the top of these stairs. And this is exactly where this.
C
Has he had any experiences, the watch guy?
B
I don't think so. I. I think I've asked him once or twice in the past, and I. I don't believe he's had any stories. It's hard to believe for as long as he's been here. But again, I know he's kind of a. A come and go. He is here mostly during the daytime, so I. I don't know that I've ever seen him at night. I think a lot of the stories that we've heard happen either late at night or really, really early in the morning.
A
And then to be clear, I know that the building had the addition made onto it. This is the original part of the building where we were just with the office and that little Loft balcony area that overlooks the main coffee shop area down there. Is that original, too, do you know?
B
I can't remember, so I believe that is part of the original. But I know that that middle section of our building was enclosed at some point, and I want to say it was like in the 60s or maybe even the 70s. So that almost even was like a courtyard, from what I understand. And then they added the back portion, maybe even late 70s, early 80s.
A
Got it.
B
That's my understanding. Might not have those dates exactly correct,
A
but Tracy led us out of the Watch studio, and just to the right was the infamous stairwell descending into the kitchen below. But before we could continue, something unexpectedly made Tracy take pause.
B
So again, this is the. The top of the stairs. Just being here at the stairs, I feel like I just walked into something.
A
Oh, did you?
B
Well, I don't know. Cobweb, maybe, but
A
that's. That's actually what they feel like sometimes.
B
Oh, really?
A
Yeah, that's very common. But let's let me see if there is anything just to double check, because that would be cool to note. I'm gonna check your hair, too.
B
Yeah, super crazy.
A
I'm not seeing any webs anywhere.
B
I wouldn't think so, because again, he comes and goes pretty regularly.
A
So there's a camera right here, too. Yeah, security camera. Have you ever caught anything on camera?
B
So that's his camera, so I don't know. We can certainly ask him. We have a few cameras around. But no, I mean, I do periodically check, you know, because it does record through the night. So every now and then, I'll look to see if there was any movement or something, but I haven't seen anything.
D
So.
B
So again, we're standing at the top of the stairs, and we're looking down into the kitchen, which we'll go ahead and go down now.
A
Okay. Making our way down into the kitchen. Right by the dishwashing sinks. Straight down from the upstairs stairwell.
B
Yeah. So some of the stories, you know, they're here doing dishes at the dish sink. Again, just kind of at the top of the stairs. They've seen the woman in the white dress.
A
That's an old original window.
B
It is. So we actually built these walls here just to close off kind of where we actually make the cabba. But this is all original. These are the front doors. And so, you know, we just kind of had to put some up. And I mean, they're not. You can't. Couldn't even open them up when we first came in, so they're just not operational. Yeah, but those are, are the original doors.
A
And yeah, making our way back to the. Where this is the pizza cooking area. Nice.
B
Yeah, so awesome. Pizza garden had their, you know, pizza here and then after they left, this is my understanding is Madrones used to roast their coffee here. So all the vents system stayed in place. When we came in, the roaster was gone, all the pizza ovens were gone. So we just repurchased two little ovens here and hooked them back up to the ventilation. This is where we cook our pizzas. This is pretty cool. Again, all original limestone here. Again, these are the stairs that are from the exterior, which is super neat.
A
That was a little alcove in the pizza area. Now we're making our way back out to behind the coffee bar area.
B
Yeah. So again, leads, you know, got some of the exterior limestone in here. This is the area that again, I. I think, well, actually where the green room is. And then the bookway maybe would be where the courtyard is. So this actually may be still part of the original. And I again, I just think that because that's all from my understanding, the original limestone. So that would be the end of
A
the original two story.
B
Correct.
A
Yeah. Tracy Nix guided us into the narrow breezeway connecting the coffee shop and the Cava bar lounge, the area with the restroom centered between two hallways leading into the larger rear section of the building. Now, to be clear, this back portion is not part of the original 1898 limestone structure built by James Andrew Patton. It was added decades later, likely sometime in the 70s or 80s, though I'm still working to pin down that exact timeline through historical research. But despite being the newer addition, this area has developed plenty of its own stories over the years. And standing there in the dim hallway, illuminated almost entirely by the glow of the neon green sign, sat something easy to miss at first glance. An old safe. It had come up briefly in a few of my earlier interviews, but now Tracy was about to tell us more
B
about it again, that being the open courtroom. Now, it's got two restrooms in here, hallway on one side, and then we've got kind of a little cubby on the other side, which we do call the green room. We've got a green neon sign in there that says, welcome to the jungle.
A
Now I'll try to stay quiet so he can't hear. But there's a safe in there, isn't there?
B
There is, so that it's been here for a really long time. From my understanding, the safe is probably maybe almost four and a half, five feet tall. It is about probably two and a half feet wide. I mean, I don't know that I could move it if I wanted to. We've tried to get into it. It does not open. But during our kind of cosmetic renovations, when we first came in one morning, my family came in, and the safe door was open. On the inside of it. On the inside of the door, it says hello, and it almost looked like it was written in chalk. So we did actually get to go through to see if there was anything there. There's kind of a couple almost like drawers, and there were like, some old buttons or something, but nothing of value in the safe. But we closed the door, and we have not been able to open it since.
D
Wow.
A
Curious. The original owner has. It's been in the family for almost a century or more. Or more than a century. Would they. This is just being devil's accurate. Do you think they know the code and they do that when they get a new tenant?
B
I mean, it is possible. I'm not sure. You know, he. He told us, you know, it could live there or it could move if we needed it to. There's also an old jukebox. I don't know if you saw when we just walked. That was somewhere here in the building when we came in.
A
I used to be here back in the day. I came here when it was a pizza place. I think I seen it back there.
B
Yes.
A
In the main area back there. The back area.
B
Yeah. It's super not operational. So we did just kind of. We don't certainly want to get rid of it, but we just kind of moved it out of the way.
A
Do you want to guide us and tell us anything? I mean, if there's people there, don't, you know, we can wait. But this is where the bathrooms are.
B
Yeah. So this is, again, some of limestone over here on the exterior wall. And then we've got two restrooms in this hallway. Kind of call this our. Our book study room. We've got a bookcase with some games and books, and it just kind of is the. The walkway into what we call the Cava bar. So it is kind of the. The main part of the building.
A
Yeah.
B
All of the walls are. Are limestone. It's got the original, you know, wood ceilings. We refinished the. The wood floor. So I'm just trying to preserve the history that's here.
A
Yeah. At this point, I wanted to check in with Alexis to see what he'd been picking up on the space and whether he'd noticed any unusual EMF readings during Our walkthrough, he'll reference a box in the upstairs loft office. For clarity, he's referring to a larger breaker box mounted on the wall. The same office where Tracy had mentioned the door slamming shut on its own
C
in the kitchen when she was talking about where people are seeing the woman.
A
Yeah.
C
The EMF is at 4.6, not 0.46. 4.6, that's high.
A
Okay.
C
And it was, like, steady.
A
Was it by the dishwashing sink?
C
Yeah. Oh, it was that whole area, actually. But dishwashing, sink, all that? It was like 3, 4, 5.
A
Okay.
C
But it stayed pretty steady at 4.6. So, I mean, I'm not discounting anything, but that could be the reason why they're seeing stuff when they're there.
A
They feel a lot of uncomfortableness there too. So that's another. It could be the. We'd explore. I wish Franklin was here too, so we could be taking care of that.
D
Yeah.
C
The upstairs off office, the door slamming thing was kind of strange for me. I mean, maybe it's different when the AC's on up here, but. And even though the EMF was high by the box, it was at a 0.3. Like, even if you went so much as, like, six inches away from it.
A
Okay.
C
So it's. It's pretty well taken care of. The green room safe was interesting. Downstairs in the living area or the front area, they have a duende. It's a statue of a duende, which is basically like a. Like a house troll, if you will. Big time in Mexican folklore that you. You're supposed to keep them, but you're supposed to take care of them or like, give them offerings, things like that, so they don't mess around with you. So if they are having any issues with, like, things being messed with or, like, things going missing or things moving around, that could just be because they have a duenda statue. They don't even realize that that's what that is. Something to think about. And the other thing I saw down there that was interesting is they have a. A statue of a drummer, like a. A man playing the drums. It's a Haitian statue and a Haitian drummer, which basically would be calling for a spirit. So I thought that was kind of interesting.
A
Where was the. The other spirit? Your. The other.
C
They're both on the exact same spot.
A
Where at?
C
Right here, the bar.
A
See, See this bookcase? Yeah.
C
Not this one, but the other one.
A
Okay. Yeah. And then what is this?
C
I mean, that's the other thing too. There's a lot of tribal stuff. Here and from various various tribes.
A
I wonder if they brought that in. Okava I would imagine so.
C
They're trying to have like the more of the tribal, you know, but it's not all one place. Like for example, the man playing the drum looks tribal, but it's Haitian. Yeah, I don't know why they have a duende. I don't know.
A
It might just be. They think it looks.
C
It could be connected to it.
D
I don't know. Maybe.
C
I mean, I don't know enough. I would have to do a little more research on that, but there could be a connection.
A
For clarity, the duende and drummer statues Alexis mentions were located downstairs near the coffee bar directly below us. At the time we were standing upstairs on the interior loft overlooking the lobby area beneath us. It was around 9pm so there were still a few patrons in the kava bar, but the building was fairly quiet and mostly vacant. I wanted to make good use of the time and take Alejandro on our first walkthrough of the entire space before Kate arrived. Alejandro serves as a medium and instructor for the First Spiritualist Church of Austin while continuing his own education through two prominent schools of mediumship. Tonight would be his first time doing a case with us without any prior knowledge of the location. But first, a short sponsor break. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. So I'm going to walk Alejandro through the whole space and just let him get first impressions and if he needs to stop me and tell me something we'll we'll make a stop. Let's begin by going cuz they're still in There. So let's start over here. I. I would say let's start and work this way, but let's start upstairs since it's all empty, and then we'll work our way down. Yeah. And you just take your time. You just go and go wherever you're pulled. But the AC is out, so it's a little warmer. And then they have their, like, office right here. You're welcome to go in there if you want to go in there.
D
I will say I am sensitive to emf, and I'm getting a very, like, weird feeling in my stomach. I don't know if you checked this area yet, but I immediately kind of felt like a tight presence, though. That could possibly be spirit, but I'm gonna sway on the side of EMF just by the way my body's reacting. Walking in here, I did kind of see something in the corner of my eye. Like, I don't want to call it a shadow, but it was like a quick. Almost like a utterance of someone who would use this space. I'd have to tune in more to figure it out, but we could probably come back after.
A
No worries. How's this space feeling up here? Is it drawn anywhere?
D
I will say over here in this kind of balcony area. I immediately, when we walked up. And it's funny. I have in my notes, I have horrible handwriting. Sorry. On the balcony. Almost as if, like, someone's looking down, like, watching. And when you look up, like, no one's there. It happened a couple times. I was specifically feeling the presence of a woman at this moment in time. Where I'm at, she could be anywhere between, like, 37 to 40. I don't know if this is a place that was tied to a family with money at some point, but she just feels, like, very well off, but had lost in some sort of way. But I just have to feel into that a little bit more.
A
We pushed on, making our way to the front side of the upstairs portion of the building. Now, this is a part of their, like, storage. And then. Then we got access to this. This is a separate business, and it's a really cool little. If you want to go through that door. This is a watch. He was kind enough to give the owner permission to let us actually go through these spaces also. Yeah, this beautiful space. I wish I had this as the night owl office.
D
I was about to say. I was like, this looks like it could be your bedroom. It's crazy.
A
I love it. Just want to note real quick, I got a weird interference on my mic, but it could just be technical. I just want to note it, so I mark it.
D
I immediately was drawn to this window. It's the one overlooking the road where we entered on. I'm not sure what road this is.290,
A
the access road to 290. And I'll just note real quick. It's not the front facing windows, but I'm standing in the room facing 290. It's the window on the left.
D
Yeah. I was immediately drawn to this specific window. It almost felt like muscle memory. I don't know if someone who was here before kind of always would look out this window, but I am feeling kind of like a very masculine echo that would, like, look out this window and just kind of look at the street in between working. I'm seeing almost like a businessman kind of man. Very well put together. There's a lot of. How do I say, this energy of pacing in this room. Not like a nervous pacing, but like an occupied pacing. Kind of like when you're working and you just have to, like, do something so you're not sitting. But there is a more masculine presence in here. Feels very, like, gentlemanly, but also I'm just getting the energy of someone walking back and forth. And if, like, let's say if I was sitting here, I would. And looking at that computer, I would be seeing someone passing by my peripheral vision, like, quite often. I don't know if this used to be a bedroom, but I almost felt as if I was able to lay down right here. Like if there was a bed here at some point or something big enough to lay down on. But this feels like it might be an office now, but it felt like somewhere where someone would be relaxing. Because the energy of, like, sleep is in this corner, if that makes sense.
A
Okay, I'm gonna tag it mentally, visually. We're in that watchmaker's room. It's the far corner where the television is, and there's a window and an AC unit going out that window. Just so I know for reference later. Already, Alejandro had picked up on a few things that immediately caught my attention. He described sensing a strong female presence even before arriving at the building, and specifically felt her watching from the upstairs balcony area. Interesting, considering several former employees we interviewed had also described feeling being watched from that loft space, with some even believing they heard a woman's voice coming from above. Alejandro also sensed someone connected to money or business ownership. While I'm not certain the Patton family would have been considered wealthy, they did own and operate a successful business here for many years. Then Inside the Watch studio, Alejandro began describing a male presence pacing and walking through the upstairs area. That instantly brought me back to Billy, the paranormal investigator who explored the building during its Austin Pizza Garden days, who clearly described hearing heavy men's bootstraps pacing upstairs. Just a few observations to keep in mind as we continued our way down the stairwell and finally into the kitchen below. We can go down into the kitchen. The stairwell.
D
Oh, I wrote on my notes. And this is before we walk into the kitchen.
A
Oh, yeah, here, let me use my light. Thank you.
D
I was issues in the kitchen. Feeling like you're being watched. I also got on my notes transfer of ownership at some point. So if this used to be something else and then kind of like transferred. And I also got earlier, before I was present here, the business was closed for a while.
B
And
D
when it reopened, it was something different. But you said the kitchen's down here.
A
Yeah, down there. Alejandro also touched on something interesting here relating to the history of the Patton family. As we know, the old rock store business was originally established by James Andrew Patton before eventually being passed down to his daughter Rosa, who continued operating it through the years. And remarkably, even today, the property is still owned by descendants of the Patton family. We just made it down to the bottom of the stairwell in the kitchen.
D
Something about this sink being here, that one over there in the other room where she's currently washing dishes. Something about it blocking a path that used to be there. Almost as if it's like blocking the flow of energy that used to be able to be free flowing. Kind of like if you were to put in the walkway entry of a house. If you were to put like a coffee table that was too big, you'd be hitting your hip on it all the time. It feels like spiritually, the energies moving past here are used to more space.
A
The sink area is one many people have described as feeling particularly strange. But most notably, it's where several witnesses have reported seeing a figure standing at the top of the stairs often and a woman in white, or what looks like a wedding dress, whom many have come to associate with Rosa. We continued further into the kitchen toward the old pizza ovens, where Alejandro was immediately drawn to a small alcove tucked beneath the staircase that leads out to an exterior door facing the front parking lot.
D
Again, I don't know if this was a house at some point, but it does feel like this was a. Like a worker's entrance, like somewhere where the owner or the boss would not necessarily be passing through, but it just feels like it was used a lot by just staff in general, because I'm just feeling very heavy echoes of traffic in and out of this specific hallway.
A
Alejandro also mentioned getting the impression that the building may have once functioned as both a home and a business, though he wasn't entirely certain yet, unknowingly, he was exactly right. But this was only his first quick walkthrough of the location. And from there, we moved on toward the neon green hallway, the same area where he had spent a long time sitting quietly alone after first arriving at the old rock store. You want to take me to this room that you were in? Did you get anything while you were sitting here in here?
D
I did. I got almost like a spinning energy. It's funny because the green lights were very, like, chill and grounding. There's a cursive neon sign here. This is welcome to the jungle. But when I was sitting here, I almost felt the energy of. I don't want to say anger per se, but kind of like frustration, like not being able to settle in or sit still, which, again, is not unusual for me. But it was just weird that I was feeling it in such, like, a chill space When I sat in this chair. It's a, like, a little zebra print chair. I almost felt like I wasn't supposed to be sitting there, and I moved immediately like it belonged to somebody who sits there often in spirit. Again, I'm just gonna kind of like, relay what I'm feeling and seeing. Kind of going back to that chair, I was feeling the presence of the woman that I was feeling earlier, and it's almost as if she. Not that she does not like men, but wary of men in the area. So, like, male staff members, if there are any, would have that more uneasy feeling than any female staff members would. It's almost like I'm feeling like the more feminine presence within this, like, downstairs space. And even when we're in the kitchen, I was feeling like that female presence a little bit more when we were upstairs. It was almost like the energy shifted. I was feeling a more masculine presence upstairs. It also feels like just the placement of the wall there for the bar is also just kind of. Kind of like, I don't know, confusing a little bit to the energies that are moving around this space.
C
Which wall?
A
The.
D
This one or this one?
A
Right here. This whole section off. Okay.
D
It just feels like a go for it. It blocked out. It almost felt like I was wanting to walk through here, but I couldn't. But, I mean, looking at it now, it's clearly not original, but I wasn't paying attention to that when I first tried to walk through there.
A
Yeah, a couple more things worth pointing out here in the same green hallway. If you recall from our interviews, a former guest waiting for his fiance to finish closing one night casually began calling out to Rosa, only to suddenly hear a stern, disembodied male voice confront him. He later described the presence as feeling protective of both Rosa and the building itself. Interestingly, while Alejandro seemed to sense the female presence more strongly in this area, the emotional tone and energy he described felt very similar to what this witness had reported. Another interesting moment came when Alejandro suddenly pointed directly toward one particular wall and commented that he could feel a noticeable shift in energy there. Unknowingly, he was identifying the exact dividing point between the newer addition to the building and the original limestone patent structure. While Alejandro and I had been doing this walkthrough, Alexis had left to go meet Kate at the rendezvous point and escort her back to this location. They had now arrived, and before taking her through a tour of this entire building, I wanted to document any impressions that she may have gotten prior to arriving. The main cavalbar still had a few remaining patrons inside, so we left Alejandro downstairs to continue quietly reading the environment while I brought Kate upstairs to the balcony loft to begin the same walkthrough I had just taken him on. So we're upstairs on the main balcony loft that overlooks the cafe bar. Kate, just tell us what you got before you even arrived.
E
So I started getting hit hits a few days ago, and I kept seeing a woman, Like a woman, a woman with longer dark hair. And then when I focused in more and where we were going, I saw a pastry case. And it looked like, when you walk in the door, like there's a pastry case right there or a bakery case. I also, sorry, it's hard to breathe up here. I saw that woman. I saw her behind the counter. And then I kept seeing. Seeing vinyl chairs. I thought maybe it was like a cafe or a bakery or something like that. I honestly, I felt bar. But whenever you said, we're meeting on Sunday, I didn't think, oh, it's going to be a bar because it's Sunday. So I was like, maybe cafe, maybe bakery. There's something where people are being serviced. But I kept hearing, like, bar, bar. Right now I'm feeling somebody grabbing my arm and standing behind me. I saw this as a single building, and I thought that it maybe used to be somebody's home, but not currently somebody's home because some of the spirits were there. Felt like Very lived in. And then I kept seeing stairs, but it's kind of weird because I see I saw them going down. So I was from a perspective where I was up and, like, going down. I kind of sketched what I saw. I also kept seeing this, like, kind of awning coming down.
A
I see that in the sketch. Yeah, yeah. And that's what they have out in the front, if you haven't seen it yet.
E
I haven't seen the front.
A
It's got awnings. Yeah. Like, over the windows.
E
I was really second guessing myself because of everything, but getting here was like, almost. Oh, my God. It's literally a bar. It's literally vinyl. I kept seeing vinyl chairs. Now, I did see them circular and not rectangular.
A
So the tables, right, you said.
E
Yeah. So I'm wondering if there was, like, a change in that. And I'm picking up before that change in tables happened.
A
Okay. Just to be clear, these weren't impressions Kate was giving me. In the moment prior to arriving, she had already sketched and written down impressions in a journal while completely blind to this location. Standing there with her now, I was looking through those notes for the very first time with her. One drawing immediately caught my attention. A dark staircase descending downward. And notably, we had not yet taken Kate to the old staircase leading down into the kitchen. Yet the sketch looked strikingly similar to that area, and I was very interested to see how she would naturally react once we eventually brought her there and whether it would align with this earlier impression or not. The second important thing to note was her immediate sense of a female presence. Interestingly, Alejandro's strongest and earliest impression had also centered around a young woman. But it was still early in the investigation, and we were only just beginning with Kate's first walkthrough. We're gonna do a thing right now where we go through, and I'm just gonna walk you to every space. I'm not gonna show you hotspots because I don't want you to feel influenced by anything. You just see every space. So we'll start here. This is the upstairs balcony. If you need to relay anything here, just let me know.
E
I also want to say at some point, there was, like, a family that lived here. Like, it's a family aspect, not necessarily just one person.
A
Okay. This is the only other space up here other than where we're going to go next. Yeah. This is the upstairs office. Feel free to go in and fill it out. This is where they come and do their paperwork for the cafe and the bar.
E
It feels like things move around here, it's like you put it down in one place and it shows up in another place is what it kind of looks like to me.
A
Watch your step over here because this is where it gets dark. They don't have lights. We now pushed through the beaded curtain and made our way toward the stairwell and the door to the upstairs watch studio. Now, I will let you know that you were talking about stairs.
E
Yes, these are the stairs.
A
So you saw these before. What came to you from this?
E
This is what I. It's like a basement. It's like going down into a basement. And I saw the structure as a multi level leveled place, but these specific stairs I was seeing, I never saw because, like, what was the business that we went to with Walter?
A
Fredo.
E
Okay, Freddo's. When I tapped in, I could see, oh, this is a two story home. But for this specific building, I kept seeing the edge of the top of the stairs and going down, and it was just dark. I couldn't see. I couldn't see anything else. Yeah, this is it. This is exactly, exactly what I saw.
A
I knew when you were describing it over there, I knew it was this because I'd been. I walked through the whole building, Right. And I was like, okay, I know what she's talking about.
E
Yeah. It was dim, too, in my vision.
C
Yeah.
E
Interesting.
A
Next we entered the watchmaker studio space. Wipe away what you see. What do you feel? Because obviously you don't want to be influenced by all this whiskey and. Yeah, but what do you feel?
E
I see an older man, and he was standing in front of the door before we got in here. So this was probably his living quarters or what he used. I see him, like walking around in here and it was almost like, come in is how it feels to me. I still see him standing right here. He's thinner, about. Are you taller or shorter? Taller. Here. Ish. And I think he wore glasses at an older age. He might not have when he was younger, but it's like reading leaders or something like that. Right now this man is gentle. I'm picking up on somebody who's gentler. Now, I don't feel that by the stairs, but that there's a man here in particular.
A
Okay, the stairs. Which stairs are you talking about? These here.
E
These? Yes. Also this man is wearing. They look like blue slacks, like a. Like a business pant or like a. I don't think it's me out of. I heard twill, but I don't. I don't even know what that is. That's What I'm seeing, they're, like, blue. He uses this space a lot. I feel like he's very active. He feels very intelligent. He moves around a lot, like. And I. Sometimes it's walking, but sometimes it's like, boom. I'm here by the window. Now I'm over here. Now I'm over here. And I'm seeing a woman over here, too. She's. I think she's seen by the window a lot, especially on this side. There's somebody who's, like, pacing over here.
A
I'm going to make notes visually, so I'll remember what side. So Kate's referencing the two windows. When you walk into this space on the right, where the woman might be seen often and the male is just kind of throughout the space.
E
Somebody is a peeker. They're, like, peeking over, peeking around. So people might see shadows or, like, movement like that. This looks like somebody who's peeking. Feels feminine, but I haven't asked her to step out yet.
A
What'd you feel?
E
Somebody just brushed up against me. Okay, that's a man. I think that's the man. He is very active here. You can probably hear footsteps. Underneath is probably a lot of creaking sounds. It's chalked up to the house often because the house is restless sometimes, but. But it sounds just like that, actually.
A
Yeah.
E
Yes.
A
That was Meg walking, by the way.
E
Yes. But that is what it sounds like.
A
You can hear it like, yeah, Yay. I'll just do an example.
E
Yes. And it's a man. Cause it's like a heavier. It's a heavier stat, for sure. I feel the man over here.
A
Well, now we had Kate also strongly picking up on a male presence inside the watchmaker studio, just as Alejandro had earlier. And there were several unique correlations between their readings that I found really noteworthy. Kate described the man as gentle. Alejandro referred to him as a gentleman, and also said he felt comfortable around this presence. Both seem to independently describe a sort of businessman aesthetic tied to this figure as well. And then there was the pacing. Both mediums repeatedly reference the feeling or sound of footsteps and someone walking around upstairs. An especially interesting correlation, considering Billy, the paranormal investigator from the Austin Pizza Garden days, had also described hearing heavy men's footsteps moving through the upstairs area years earlier. Another detail really stood out to me, too. Almost immediately upon entering the room, Kate commented that it felt like this may have once been someone's living quarters. Again, this closely aligned with Alejandro's earlier impressions. He had even mentioned sensing a bed or sleeping area nearby. Now, I don't have definitive confirmation that this specific room once served as a bedroom, but we do know that the Patton family lived upstairs above their business below. And architecturally, this room, more than any other in the building, does feel like it could have once functioned as a private living space. All this was becoming difficult to ignore, especially considering these were too many mediums. With absolute no prior knowledge of the location and no opportunity to compare notes or influence one another beforehand. At this time, we decided to make our way down to the kitchen below. It's weird because I feel like I have sea legs. It's like a almost like a fun house effect I'm feeling in my body down here.
A
We continued roaming through the kitchen and into the coffee bar area with Kate saying very little during these portions of the walkthrough, mostly just quietly reading and absorbing the space around her. Eventually though, we made our way back to the transition hallway area before entering the kava bar side of the building. But this is a. They just, it's just hallways to this back room. This is the, they call it the green room because they put a green Neon sign up in here.
E
It feels like we went into a completely different building energetically.
A
Again, this was another incredibly similar read from Kate to what Alejandro had picked up on earlier. This transition hallway is the exact point where the original limestone structure meets the newer addition added later in the building's life. And Alejandro had independently sensed that same shift in energy when we first brought him through this space. Overall, I was really happy with this first blind walkthrough from both mediums. Two predominant energies kept emerging. A female presence and a male presence. And the locations where they independently called out these experiences were often the exact same spaces. There were a few differences, like Kate also sensing the female presence inside the watch studio, but overall, the amount of overlap and correlation between their impressions was difficult to ignore. It felt like a really strong baseline for two mediums who had no prior knowledge of the building and no contact with one another. At this point, all the patrons had left, and the staff were beginning to clean up and close for the night. So there was going to be some background noise for a little while. I asked both mediums to remain in separate areas of the building, continuing their own individual readings and quietly connecting with the space while Alexis and I pulled Tracy aside to catch up and ask her a few questions. Kate didn't get anything in that area. She just kind of walked through it kind of curiously. She didn't say anything, but she keeps. Like, when I asked her, I said, she never say anything about the stairs. She just saw it. When I asked her, where do you want to? She was like, I am drawn to watch those stairs and go into that watch office and just sit there and see what I get. I came to Alejandro separately. I said, where are you drawn? He's like, I need to go up to this stairs in that watchroom again. I was like, they both want to go there.
C
So that's a big walk through. And we were going down the stairs. I was the last one. And I felt like that, you know, whenever you're like, I just want to get out of the room, I like, something's gonna touch me. I felt that, but I was like, well, it could just be the stories. So I was like, let's see if they pick up on that.
D
So, yeah.
A
And you know where you got the spider web feeling by the series?
B
Yeah.
A
When I was up there with her, I was. I was just moving my hand, and I felt it. It was right there on the back of my hand, like, spiderweb, but it was nothing there. I was like, man, something's right there in that Doorway. Yeah, I didn't. I didn't want him to know, so I kind of just played it off. But I didn't tell them that I felt it. And it was like, dad, I knew
C
anytime we're doing, like, seances or sittings, that's the first thing I get. It's like spider webs on my face like this. It's the first sensation.
A
With both mediums repeatedly describing a male presence pacing upstairs and Kate specifically mentioning the sound of heavy footsteps or boots. I wanted to ask Tracy whether any current staff had ever reported hearing something that specific themselves. I already had Billy's experience from an investigation during the Austin pizza garden years where he clearly described hearing loud bootsttes moving around upstairs. But I was curious whether similar reports were still happening inside the building today among the current employees. I don't know where in the building those bootstraps are heard. Do you know where that's often heard?
B
I mean, a lot of times we just assume it's somewhere upstairs, because when they hear them, they're usually in the cobble bar area. They can hear them. Which is crazy, because if you're in the cobble ball room and something's happening up here, you can't hear it. Like, I think the walls are so thick, like, my husband squeezes in the back. And it is a loud, obnoxious noise, and you cannot hear it when you're in there. So the fact that people can hear footsteps, that's why I'm like, I don't know if it's here in this loft area, because it seems so loud when you're in a room that you probably couldn't hear it normally.
A
Tracy confirmed that the footsteps are still very commonly heard today by staff. However, what makes this especially strange is where they're hearing them from. Employees often report hearing footsteps while working in the kava bar, despite the fact that there is no upstairs Directly above that section in the building. The second floor actually ends back at the loft overlooking the coffee bar. And even more interesting, the upstairs watch studio, where both mediums strongly sense the pacing male presence, is located on the complete opposite end of the building from the cavalbar itself and upstairs. At this point, Alexis wanted to take some time to share some observations from the drive over, specifically regarding some of Alejandro's impressions Before he had even arrived at the old rock store.
C
Before Alejandro came up, because he rode with me, the first thing he wrote down was, limestone building.
A
Oh, he did.
C
He also said, the pattern's not normal. It's not like perfect brick. It's like, called kind of weird, different patterns, which obviously I asked him, is it a business or is it a home? He goes, business? No, it was a home. And then he was like, I think it was a business. He kind of went back and forth. And then the other thing he said was red floor, which was pretty cool. And then. And he also made him take a video of this just because, like, you know, people could be like, oh, you're saying that, you know, he also picked up on a woman, and he was like, I got her for a little bit, but then she walked away. And that was. We were driving over here, so he wasn't even here yet. And then he. I think he mentioned, I don't know if this was in a walkthrough, about how she was from money as well. And then. And then he picked up on you. You, or he said, the owner. And I think he has a message specifically he wants to give you that he got when he was driving over here.
A
At this time, we decided to have Alejandro share this message with Tracy.
D
Essentially, the message that was coming forward was that wrestling with the idea of staying in this location or whether or not to move, things feel a little, like, uncertain right now for, like, the stability of everything. But it's really important for you to stick your neck out a little bit longer because there's so much prosperity that's coming. You just have to wait. If you choose, like, a simpler path, it's not going to be as green for you, and you're not going to feel as fulfilled.
B
Thank you.
D
I was just feeling the energy when I was sitting over here in this green room that when things are on good standing with her, she draws in business. So working with the energy instead of against it is a really good way to just kind of, like, call in. Because she does feel like she was from a very prominent family. Again, I don't know if anything was verified yet. She saw the people around her lose it, and she knows how to not do that again, allow you to learn from her mistakes. So just again, I've never been here before. I don't know the ins and outs or, like, the rate in which people come into this business. But when things are feeling a little slow, just kind of feel like, hey, we need a little pick me up today. What can we do, you know, and just feel into it.
A
We could tell the message genuinely hit Tracy, and she quietly took it in. I know for a fact that this location's previous businesses had struggled for years due to the massive highway construction and road closures surrounding it so many nearby buildings were demolished during this project, and honestly, the old Rock store itself survived only because it was protected as a Texas historical landmark. Because of that, what Alejandro was describing felt deeply personal. And from the way he was presenting it, the message seemed to be coming directly from the same strong female presence he had been sensing throughout the night. Kate had been especially drawn to the upstairs areas, so we gave her some time alone there, while Alejandro decided to spend some time in the now empty Cava bar side, a space none of us had really been able to focus on earlier due to the remaining patrons. After giving them quite some time in each of these spaces alone, we decided to check back in with Kate, who was sitting quietly at the large table in the upstairs loft area.
E
There's a woman here that is so active. Like, very, very active. That's who I was connecting with right now. I see her with washing her hands. I see her wringing her hands. I see her taking care of things. I see, like, old curtains, and she's, like, fluffing the dust out of them. This woman existed in a time period, period where, like, oil lamps existed. I'm seeing her carry around the oil lamp. It's like, who said I was an artist? Not me.
A
We'll get you some drawing classes like this.
E
I do abstract art. It looks like that. Yeah. I see her carrying it around. Longer skirt. I don't think it's a dress. I think it's a skirt and a shirt. I see her wearing an apron. I keep seeing kids. I think they're her kids. They seem to be in the same space to me. It's interesting. Before coming up here, I got more of, like, a little girl's presence. But while I was sitting here and here, I kept seeing a little boy. And I don't know if the name Billy or William means anything or. Or if that's just like. Sometimes names come through to associate with something. So Billy could come through sometimes to. To show up as, like, a boy. I don't know if that name means anything, but I see him running around. He's younger. I see him hiding underneath of the table sometimes. It's funny because this feels like a desk to me. And so I'm like, did you sit at a wooden desk sometimes? And do I see you, like, riding in the building? So to me, that speaks a lot of the time period, because it's not like they went to school like they were homeschooled or they were in. This area back here is definitely a male presence. It's interesting because when we went to. Hang on just one second. When I went back there originally, you could feel how much is happening. I see things moving at the top. I see shadows and it's like blurs of shadows. Not necessarily. Well, I see like apparitions too. The apparitions, though, I think are shouted. They're in shadow. There's a man associated with that office that feels very business like. Like I'm don't think it's the same man that I feel in like the threshold of the area. This man I keep seeing like an old. Like a hat. I keep seeing him wear a hat. I wonder if his shadow looks like he's wearing a hat even. I kept asking him, like, step out, step out. If you're so. You know, if you talk to everybody and you're, come on, let me see you. But I can't. I just see shadow right now. I do get the sense of like a shoving from him. It feels more like a shoving or like a. This kind of movement, but it's mostly. Do you move downstairs too? I don't think he goes downstairs, but he might. But right now that man is separate than the office.
A
Where the watches are is a separate energy. Yeah.
E
To me, I keep seeing somebody standing in shadow. You can feel him standing behind you, pricklies on your arms kind of sensation. But the man that I saw with the office was very much show you what I look like. This is even how I walk foot. I hear footsteps up there, things like that. I also heard noise downstairs in the kitchen. I'm not sure if that was you guys or what, but it was like a glass moving or glass hitting each other. I bet you hear that often downstairs or things moving. There's an energy of intelligent spirits. And then there's also an energy of like, circuit of like, moving energies. They don't necessarily cross each other, but I think sometimes it's confused for like, oh, this is a certain man. But really it's not the man. It's the energy of the house because it has its own space. Somebody's touching me. A gentleman. Also upstairs is so different than downstairs. It's. This is somebody's home. That's how it feels upstairs. I wonder what their house looked like while it existed, because I don't think that, like, this was there. This feels. Just feels so separate. And then I wanted to make a joke because every time I talk to women that didn't have cars when they were living, that's the number one thing they remark about as ghosts. It's like, it's so Noisy out there now. And I don't think it used to be noisy like that before.
A
And then just now breaking down like you're in the area. So, so far upstairs is really different. Do you have. Don't force it yet. Just kind of. If you're getting. You've told me that. That shadow man. Let's call him shadow man because that's what. It's differentiated from the businessman or it's different. You said the other guy was more like a business man with the hat.
E
Okay, the businessman. No hat.
A
No hat. The shadow.
E
Shadow man. I see with a hat.
A
And then the watchroom office area is that businessman without the hat. The shadow man is more in the. The doorway. And you said that, like the back
E
area here, this whole threshold. And this is so. As a psychic drawing, like, I just want to go back here and just stay back here.
A
Yeah.
E
There's somebody who hides behind the partitions. Like they were here behind this partition downstairs. They were behind that partition. Partition. And it's like a peekaboo kind of situation. I feel like that's feminine. I even walked around it up there and it felt feminine. But it was hard because that man has such a presence there. It's kind of hard to. To pull it apart.
C
Yeah.
E
And then, to be honest, I didn't even. I haven't been in the office since being up here. I did automatic writing over here and then sat at the staircase and explored that.
A
That area. Okay. And then the woman that you felt like, tied, you said it was. How did you describe her again? Like, in the history. You said she was.
E
I see like a longer skirt. I think it's a shirt, but it's tucked in so it could look like a dress. If you were to see her as an apparition, I think it could be confused as a dress. And I think there's an apron. I also wrote down, look longer. Oh, here it is. Longer hair. She pins it up in like a. She pins it up. I don't know if bobby pins existed back then, but I keep seeing pins being in her hair.
A
Okay. Curious too, about. Don't force it yet either, but are you getting any sense of age range for her?
E
Oh, she's older. She's an older woman. I don't think she. If she died really old, she doesn't appear that way in living. She may be 50s.
A
Okay. And then that. The clothing. No, no. Pressure is, are you seeing her mostly in shadow or do you get any color sense of the clothing?
E
It's like a darker colored skirt and a White top.
A
Okay, cool.
E
It could be like a navy colored blue is what I see.
A
Okay, cool.
E
I don't think it's black. I don't see her wearing black. There's like a color to it.
C
Okay.
A
With the. The spaces that she's been felt and seen so far, where are you feeling her?
E
I think she goes everywhere.
A
So she's everywhere.
E
I think she goes everywhere. She's very hands on with the building.
A
And then the children, I'm interested to know you picked them up when you were here in this space or did you pick them up somewhere else?
E
The boy up here.
A
Okay.
E
The girl I picked up before getting here, I haven't seen her. I've seen the little boy also. There are some.
B
Somebody.
E
I don't know who it is. There's somebody who is so drawn to, like the books on the shelves. They like to read. They like the knickknacks on the shelf. Like there's something about books. So I don't know if the man who used to live here, like had a big library or if he had more education than if he liked education. I don't know. But there's some. There's some connection to the book.
A
Looks solid. Stuff like this is. This is great. I'm seeing a lot of connections, but I would like you to kind of keep organically just going where your gut is drawing you to go and see where we go from there. Don't worry about names or nothing like that right away. Just take your time with it. If something comes to you, jot it down like you did. But we're not going to force anything. Just keep doing it.
E
I wanted to ask. Oh, I kept hearing Meg was humming at one point before. Before she started humming. I was like hearing a humming. Phantom wise. Yeah, just a humming. It wasn't Meg. I just could hear like a humming.
C
Yeah.
E
This woman was a young mom. I really do think so. She might have had something traumatic happen during birth. They probably gave birth in the home.
B
Oh.
E
Downstairs there's another woman that's completely. Has a different energy too much younger.
A
She.
E
She's been around for modern times.
A
More modern times.
C
Okay.
A
With this update from Kate, there were suddenly a lot of possible connections emerging between the history of the old rock store and the reported hauntings tied to it. First off, the time period details she described. Oil lamps, little to no vehicles, and the style of clothing people were wearing all seemed to align closely with the pioneer era days of James Andrew Patton. In the early formation of the old rock store. Continuing into the early life of his daughter, Rosa Selma Patton White. Kate also referenced children being present from my historical records. Rosa Selma and her husband, John Dudley White, had three children, John Dudley White, Jr. Bruce Lamar White, Sr. And Rosa Margaret White. So while the name Billy didn't immediately connect to anything I could verify historically, Kate herself admitted that she wasn't entirely certain on the name quite yet. Also, Kate made it very clear that the upstairs felt completely different from the downstairs areas. To her, the upstairs did not feel commercial or business oriented in the same way. She strongly believed it had once functioned as a home. Historically, we all know BY now that's 100% correct. The Patton family did in fact live upstairs above their general store below. But perhaps the most intriguing development was the distinction she began making between what she described as the businessman presence in their watch studio and and an entirely separate shadow man. That immediately caught my attention because many current staff members have independently reported seeing what they describe as a shadowy male figure. Though usually downstairs. And unlike the calmer businessman presence both mediums had described earlier, this figure is often associated with more startling or aggressive behavior. Employees have described being rushed by him while alone, seeing him suddenly appear behind them and move mirrors, or sensing him standing nearby unexpectedly. And one detail Kate had just mentioned stood out strongly. The shadow man was wearing a hat. That was exactly the same detail that two separate witnesses from my earlier interviews had also independently described when talking about this presence. Lastly, one possible historical connection to the male presence Kate described, particularly the impressions tied to books, education, and a scholarly or civic minded figure could be potentially pointing toward James Andrew Patton himself. Beyond founding the Old Rock store and serving as Oak Hill's postmaster, Patton was deeply devoted to education in the community. He served on the local board of school trustees for nearly 40 years, helped oversee educational development in Oak Hill, was appointed to the state education board in 1915, and even donated land in 1923 for. For the construction of what became Oak Hill School. There also appeared to be a possible younger female presence beginning to emerge in Kate's impressions, Though at this stage it wasn't entirely clear or fully developed yet. At this point, Kate was going to remain upstairs while we headed back down to the Cava bar area to check in on Alejandro and see what he had picked up during his time alone down there.
D
The strangest thing that happened is I was sitting on the couch right next to the fireplace. I was like sitting, closing my eyes, tuning in, and I got the strangest urge to dust above the fireplace. And when I looked up there, there was, you know, some visible dust, but it was almost like the female presence I was feeling in the green room was like, why is this not getting taken care of? So I, like, grabbed the cleaner, and I was looking for a toita, but I couldn't find one. So I just used one of the papers that were on the. On the napkins that were on the bar. I did hike half of it. I'm sure she's pissed I didn't finish the rest, but we'll get to it. When I locked myself outside accidentally, I immediately was kind of drawn to where the stage is. I sat down in the middle, and all of a sudden I got hit by this wave of, like. Best way to describe it is grief. It just felt like a very heavy. Like I almost got choked up. It was, like, really intense, really random. Like, tears. Well in my eyes. So strange. I almost felt like that was like the next step of where I was supposed to be, because not that by the fireplace was boring, but just something kept drawing me to that space. Almost like if it was a pattern that someone would have gone to and went out there. It does feel like back there used to be a little bit more simplistic, a little bit more boring. Like a yard, essentially. But the main thing was when I was sitting out there, it felt like it used to be a little bit more secluded, like the neighborhood wasn't there, and that seclusion was a place of peace. And when I was sitting on the stage and I felt that kind of wave of grief, I looked up at a structure that didn't exist anymore, almost if it was like something taller, like a flagpole. I don't know if there's, like, a tower or something that was removed. It was very interesting. I just kind of, like, walked the space to kind of see the. The energy. And not that it feels asleep, but it does feel a little, like, drained, if that makes sense.
A
A couple of things are worth considering from these readings. First, during my research, I discovered that Rosa Selma's husband, John Dudley White, who served as a Texas Ranger, was not actually killed here in Oak Hill or even near the property, but rather in East Texas while on duty. After being widowed and left to raise children, Rosa eventually returned to Oak Hill to help her father run the family business. So while I don't want to stretch details to forced connections, I did find myself wondering whether the grief that Alejandro kept sensing around this strong female presence could possibly relate to Rosa returning here after such a tragic loss. The second detail is smaller, but honestly, pretty interesting. Alejandro had mentioned sensing or visualizing a flagpole that may have once stood near the property. At first, I dismissed this as an oddly specific miss, but then I remembered something important. James Patton operated the Oak Hill post office out of this building for many years. And beginning in 1885, US postal facilities were officially required to display the American flag, which commonly meant maintaining a flagpole on the property. At this point, we needed to give Kate time alone in the one major area of the building. She hadn't yet fully absorbed yet the kava bar itself. So we brought her downstairs and allowed her to sit quietly in silence to continue reading the space on her own. Meanwhile, I took Alejandro back upstairs to the watch studio space so we could revisit everything he'd picked up throughout the night and go more in depth on where his impressions and readings stood. At this point in the investigation, can you describe the mill? I forgot to ask more detail. Have you seen him since or just that one time?
D
The only other time I saw him was in front of the fireplace. It was kind of like an echo of energy, though it didn't feel like his physical, like, presence. Now I'm just relaying what was coming through. I'm not making any stories, but it just felt like a crosshairs of energy, almost like bickering. But that's right before, like the dusting happened.
A
And then in here, what did that. I can't remember all the details you got about the mill, but I remember you talked about. You did talk about pacing, sleeping over here, but not necessarily the man. But you saw bed sleeping here.
D
Yeah, I saw something of like, very cushiony place. I just felt like I wanted to plop down where the TV is right now. This room feels like it's been very repurposed from what it once was. Obviously it's a business very apparent, but I mean, even before, it just feels like it may have been someone's room or another type of office where they would have, you know, taken naps in between whatever they were doing. The gentleman felt very kind of put together. He felt like a suit kind of gentleman, and it felt as if he was like, looking out the window kind of periodically. Like if people were driving in, they would see someone standing there, even if no one was here. But it's just like a concept constant echo of how much he would be pacing around the room space last thing,
A
because we want to kind of put a stamp on it. The other strong spirit you felt was a female spirit?
C
Yes.
A
Can you kind of go about, like, where you feel her strongest also, if you got any sort of visual, describe her?
D
Yeah. I'm not a good artist, but her hair felt like it was up sometimes, like, in a bun, and it felt like she was wearing kind of, like linen, like, clothes, very thin. Again, I'm not good at eras of clothing, but it just felt very simplistic, almost like.
A
Well, describe the drawing a bit.
D
Yeah. So she's just wearing, like, a simple, like, longer kind of skirt, Something very modest that you would see from women in, like, very early times, as well as, like, kind of like those poofy, kind of like pirate, like, T shirts. Not like a pirate, but the kind of thin linen, like, blouses you would see. And her hair felt very like it was tied up in a bun, almost like she was working a lot. She looks a lot more beautiful than I drew her, but she had very,
A
like, fair, softer features and places that you feel.
D
Her places downstairs felt like really her domain. I also, when I first walked in, felt her looking over the balcony when you first walk up. Like, if she. If she was like, what's going on? She feels kind of like she zooms through the space constantly in a very kind of micromanaging kind of energy with that, it feels like predominantly all of the space is kind of her area. Up here, though, in this room and this hallway up here, it felt very like that male presence in the room where we were before, where the balcony was. Even then, it was mostly like, her energy. It was until we got back here and, like, halfway down the stairs, it's almost like there's a shift back to, like, her space and energy. The only place where I felt those energies kind of simultaneously exist was in front of the fireplace. But besides that, it felt very like lines were drawn.
A
Yeah. Lastly, is there any other type of energy you're feeling? Any other male, female, anything going on, or is that it? Don't force me.
D
No worries in the back. I did feel, like, residual of children, but that could have just been because there's a play space, and, you know, spirits will attract themselves to places when they come up, but main energies I'm feeling are just the male and female presence within the space.
A
What had already unfolded during these first few hours inside the old rock store was honestly difficult to ignore. Both Kate and Alejandro had been brought to this location completely blind. Neither had been told where they were going. Neither knew the history of the building or the experiences that had been reported here over the years. And yet, independently from one another, both began describing many of the same presences in many of the same locations with strikingly similar details and emotional impressions. A strong Prominent female presence throughout this building. A businessmanlike figure tied to the upstairs watch studio pacing footsteps. The feeling that the upstairs had once been a home. A darker shadow like presence wearing a hat. Distinct emotional shifts between different areas of the building. Even the separation between the original limestone structure and the newer addition was identified independently by both mediums without any prompting. And perhaps most fascinating of all, many of these impressions seem to align not only with long reported paranormal experiences inside the Old Rock Store, but also with the very real documented history of the Patton family who built and lived inside this place more than a century ago. But this was only the beginning. As the night continued, we would begin conducting more focused sessions and experiments throughout the building in hopes of directly communicating with whatever these mediums believed they were sensing inside the Old World Rock Store. And as the investigation pushes deeper into the night, one particular detail will eventually emerge. A name we had quietly hoped to hear from the very beginning of this investigation. A name tied directly to the history of this building, and a family who once called it home. And with this name, we hope we might finally begin to learn more about the presence so many people believe is still here, while also trying to determine whether something else was sharing the space with them. Something darker. A shadowy male presence that, according to decades of reports, may still be lingering in the shadows of the Old Rock Store. Host: Stephen Belyeu
Location: The Old Rock Store (now Square Root Kava Bar), Oak Hill, Texas
Team: Stephen (host/investigator), Alexis (paranormal partner), Tracy (co-owner), Kate the Brave (psychic medium), Alejandro (student medium), Meg (photographer/intuitive)
This episode continues the investigation of Oak Hill’s storied Old Rock Store. Over its long history—as a store, pizzeria, and now kava/coffee bar—the building has been a nexus for reports of paranormal activity: shadow figures, apparitions, oppressive energy, unexplained voices, phantom footsteps, and possibly the presence of a lingering child spirit.
In Part II, the Night Owl team is granted full after-hours access to the building. Host Stephen Belyeu, joined by psychic medium Kate the Brave and student medium Alejandro (both with no prior knowledge of the building), aims to validate, experience, and clarify the stories attached to this landmark and its possible inhabitant spirits.
Slamming Office Door (9:35)
“I was working in the office...door I had open, and it just kind of slammed shut. So I went to kind of go grab it, and it didn’t open...sheer panic just kind of sets in...but then the door opened.”
—Tracy, co-owner ([09:35])
Feeling of “Spiderwebs” or Walking into Something (14:45)
“So again, this is the top of the stairs. Just being here at the stairs, I feel like I just walked into something.”
—Tracy ([14:45])
Woman in White at Stairs & Kitchen
Multiple accounts of sightings near the original kitchen and stairwell; commonly believed to be “Rosa” in a white wedding dress.
Strange Locked Safe with ‘Hello’ Written Inside (19:01)
“...the safe door was open...on the inside...it says hello...looked like it was written in chalk.”
—Tracy ([19:01])
Duende & Drummer Statues—Potential Folkloric Activity (22:31+)
Alexis notes presence of a duende (Mexican house spirit) and a Haitian drummer statue—both could attract, or complicate, haunting activity.
Prominent Female Presence: Both mediums detected a strong, active woman throughout building.
Male Presence (Businessman):
Shadow Man:
Child Spirits:
Emotional Impressions & Environmental Cues:
Tracy describing the door slamming in the upstairs office:
“...sheer panic just kind of sets in. But then, you know, I tried again, and then the door opened.” ([09:35])
Alejandro sensing a woman watching from the balcony:
“Almost as if, like, someone’s looking down, like, watching. And when you look up, like, no one's there. It happened a couple times.” ([29:20])
Kate describing the “peekaboo” feminine shadow:
“Somebody is a peeker...peeking over, peeking around. So people might see shadows or, like, movement like that.” ([46:41])
Owner Tracy reacting to a personal spiritual message from Alejandro:
“It’s really important for you to stick your neck out a little bit longer because there’s so much prosperity that’s coming...When things are feeling a little slow, just kind of feel like, hey, we need a little pick me up today. What can we do, you know?” ([59:11–59:50])
Alejandro on wanting to dust as if compelled by a spirit:
“...the strangest urge to dust above the fireplace...almost like the female presence I was feeling in the green room was like, why is this not getting taken care of?” ([73:54])
Kate on the unique upstairs section:
“Also upstairs is so different than downstairs. This is somebody’s home. That’s how it feels upstairs.” ([64:46])
Discussion of shadow man’s appearance:
“I see like a longer skirt...she pins it up in like a...She pins it up...I don’t think if she died really old, she doesn’t appear that way in living. She may be 50s...” ([68:24])
The episode is rich in evocative and suspenseful detail, keeping with the thoughtful, investigative, and respectful tone for which The Night Owl is known. The atmosphere is immersive, inviting listeners to experience the space through the eyes (and senses) of the investigative team. The hosts and mediums use colloquial, candid language, often pausing to check impressions, validate experiences, or question what might be natural phenomena.
The investigation’s first half is remarkable for the clear, independent corroboration between the two mediums—both seeing similar spirits, describing parallel emotional impressions, and identifying key building features and “hot spots” repeatedly referenced in past firsthand accounts. Historical research and psychical impressions dovetail in notable, compelling ways, setting the stage for more direct communication and possibly, answers to the Old Rock Store’s century-old mysteries.
The next episode promises deepened investigations, with focused sessions possibly revealing a key name from the building’s history—and more clues as to whether some of Oak Hill’s ghosts are benevolent, simply lost, or something more threatening still walks its halls.
