The moon is up in the sky and it's a beautiful night. I'm Jacquice everybody.
A
And I'm Josh. Welcome to the nightly from Hatch, a slumber party for pop culture lovers. Jakees, how are you doing tonight?
C
I'm feeling fantastic. My back is feeling great, my knees are feeling great. All the joints that a 40 year old needs to survive, they're feeling great. Ready for bed. How are you, buddy?
A
My joints are feeling good too. It's nice to be home for a little while and I'm very excited for some sleep tonight. But tonight, joining our slumber party, I am so excited to announce and introduce to the audience the host of the Sam Sanders show. It's Sam Sanders. Thanks so much for being here. Welcome, Sam.
D
Hi. Thank y' all for having me. This is such an honor for me as someone who listens to podcasts, to fall asleep.
C
Yes.
D
It's like I have ascended to a higher level of audio journalists.
C
You are on the other side. You are now helping people fall asleep in like a true sleep hygiene way, right?
D
Yes, yes. Public service. A public service.
C
Public service.
D
Honored to be here.
A
I would call the three of us not just public servants, but heroes.
D
Wow. Yeah, I'll take it. I will take it.
C
Call me sleep man. Sleep man in the building.
D
Now I'm like imagining a superhero trio that all exhibit special powers just to help people fall asleep.
C
You got the voice, Sam. You got the voice.
A
You really do.
C
I think you, I think your dulcet tones, you know, get people in the mood. I'll have the magic touch, you know, like the give you just to help the muscles relax and melts away. And Josh, what do you got, baby?
A
I'm smells
D
lavender and lilac.
C
That's right.
A
That's right.
C
Yeah, yeah.
A
They call me the human lilac.
D
I love that.
C
I love that, Sam. I'm always interested. We are always interested, I should say, in learning about better sleep hygiene tips, bedtime routines. Do you have something that you do or that you want to share that you're like this takes me to dreamland right away. Feeling good. Feeling right.
D
Yeah, yeah. You know, I have been a bad sleeper ever since I finished grad school and had a full time job. All my sleep issues are job related. So I have gone through the litany of things. What I found that is good for me, that I just Started because for years I was like, mm. Mm, that's weird. Eye masks. Oh, the eye mask is quite helpful.
C
Even beyond, like, blackout curtains.
D
Oh, I have blackout curtains. They ain't black enough. Like, I need. I need, like, full black.
C
Yeah.
D
African blackout. Like. And the eye mask does that.
C
Yeah.
D
And so I've been using it off and on for a few weeks now, and it works. So my regimen now is no smartphone in the bedroom when it's time to wind down, and hopefully no apps that have any streaming video for, like, the last few hours of my night, because that just amps me up. But if I can get into the bedroom with a book and my eye mask, I'm probably gonna be all right. You're good.
C
You're good.
A
This is a great day.
D
Yeah. Yeah.
C
I travel with high masks because most hotels, like, I have blackout curtains in my room, and they actually do pretty. They get like, you know, it's a cave in there, which is beautiful. But at hotels, even the blackout curtains at hotels don't. They're not good.
D
There's always a little gap. A little gap.
C
There's always. There's always a gap. I'm like, come on, man. Hotels have been around since 1 BC. Like, we gotta. We gotta solve this. This is crazy. Yeah.
D
Yeah. Another thing for me. Sorry. To add one more thing.
A
Please. This is what it's for.
D
I need the room that I'm sleeping in to be cold like a morgue.
A
I love a cold night's sleep.
D
Right. I used to think, oh, I want it warm and toasty so I'm cozy. But that will mean that I wake up at, like, 2:00am sweating. Yeah, I need a cold.
C
Yeah, same, same. I need covers.
A
I love it. I love cold and covered up. I was. I stayed with my parents for a couple nights last weekend, and it was so cold in Massachusetts, and they cranked the heat up a little bit, which was when I got into bed, really nice. And then at 3am I was like, oh, it's too toasty. And, yeah, I'd kicked those covers off. It was no good. I'm with you.
C
I'm with you.
D
You get it? You get it.
C
I love this game. And I would be very excited to play this with you, Sam. How about we play a little game called the Guest List?
B
All right. The Guest List.
C
Yeah. Now, here's what this is. Here's what this is. In this game, we each are going to invite two people to our slumber party. So we're us three, and we're going to invite two People each to the slumber party to make this a real, real happening time. And devil aside, we are in award season. I know we all have thoughts on award season, so I thought it'd be fun for us to specifically pick characters from films that came out in the past year or so.
A
Right?
C
Okay, let's do it. Okay, let's do it.
D
Do they have to be Oscar nominees?
C
I don't think so.
A
They don't.
C
Okay, cool. All right, Josh.
A
Okay.
C
Why don't you kick us off, get this guest list. Let's get this slumber party going.
A
I'm gonna start by putting a name on the guest list of a character who I think is a tremendous hang. He's prepared, he keeps cool under pressure. He's not gonna stress out and have a bad time. He's got a great network of good people, and he enjoys a few small beers from time to time. I'm inviting the sensei, Benicio Del Toro's character from One Battle After Another.
C
That's a good one.
D
He will also save your life.
A
Yes. Save your life.
D
Like, he kind of runs an underground railroad in that movie. He'll get you to freedom.
A
Yeah. I could watch probably three or four more movies about that character.
D
Yeah, I kind of wanted more of that character in the movie.
A
Totally. When he got arrested, not to spoil anything huge, I was like, ah, man.
D
Right, right. It's funny with that whole movie, I was like, God bless Leo. Generational talent, one of a kind every 20 minutes. I was like, leo, get out of the way so these other actors can shock me.
A
Tiana Taylor's just gone. We're not gonna see her again.
D
Yeah.
C
That's the wild thing about that movie is she won a Golden Globe off of. Literally.
A
She's great.
D
She might win an Oscar.
C
Seven minutes in the movie that she did not re enter after the first 15 minutes of a two and a half hour movie. It was great.
D
Three hour movie.
C
Three hours. Three hours.
D
You're right.
C
You're right.
A
I watched it with my wife, and she said, I didn't know what it was about. And she said, well, I said, what did you think it was gonna be about? She said, I truly thought it was about a pregnant woman firing a machine gun. Just like her performance was so indelible and was so present in the marketing and everything. She's like, I was just up for that for three hours.
D
Yeah. This is the thing about Leo DiCaprio movies. They're always Leo DiCaprio movies.
C
Yeah.
D
Yeah, that's it. They aren't about anybody. Else, really? It's about Leo DiCaprio.
C
It's about Leo. This is about Leo. Yep. Absolutely.
A
But Benicio Del Toro, the Sente. My number one pick for a slumber party.
D
That's a good pick.
A
Thank you.
C
All right, Sam, who you got?
D
I have a pick from a film From January of 2025 that was a surprise hit and incredibly well reviewed. It felt like this movie came out of nowhere, but I saw it in theaters twice and loved it. It's one of them days. Oh, yeah. The Issa Rae produced buddy comedy where keke Palmer and SZA are wreaking havoc through South LA trying to pay the rent.
C
Yep.
D
I would pick SZA's character. She plays Alyssa in this film. She is a wonderful stoner with a heart of gold who gets herself into trouble but always gets out of it.
C
She was great.
D
I just. I like Sza as a star. She's kind of just drama free and that same kind of effortless effervescence. Like the stoner with a heart of gold.
B
Of gold.
D
Energy comes through in her character. Alyssa in this movie. She's just the perfect Hank.
C
Yeah. I love that movie so much. It was so fun. It's so good.
A
It was so much fun.
D
Shout out Issa Rae. She's doing good stuff.
C
She's doing good stuff.
D
SZA's so good in that movie. And like, SZA holds her own against Keke Palmer. Yeah. One of the best time.
C
Yeah.
D
Truly.
C
He was a true legend.
A
Yeah.
D
Yeah.
C
That movie, too, also had a lot of fun cameos, like the Cat Williams cameo cracked me up.
A
Loved it.
C
The homie Tony Baker selling the biscuits.
D
Judd Apatow's daughter was in there for a second.
C
I think so. Yeah.
A
Janelle James, wasn't she?
C
Yes, that's right. She was the blood doctor. Or that's what you call him. But yeah.
D
And I want to be fair to Judd's daughter. Her name is Maude Apatow. She's an actress in her own right, not just someone's kid. But she's good in that movie.
A
She's great. Yeah.
C
Yeah. Love that movie.
A
And talk about Sam. Movies that are like a good time end to end. Like, you're a little worried, are they going to make the money? But you're not terrified for them. You don't feel bad. You're like, this is a fun adventure.
C
Yeah.
D
I don't feel like I'm in danger.
A
Yes. You know, Love that feeling.
C
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
A
Excellent. Great choice. Jacques, who's your number one pick?
C
All right, now, normally, when we do this. I pick, like, fun people. I pick, you know, somebody who's going to, like, bring something for everybody in the. In the slumber party. But today, I'm going to pick somebody just for me, please. I'm going to pick somebody for me. I'm going to pick somebody that, like, as a character, I like, crushed on a little bit. So this is. And I'm gonna go to the movie Sinners, and there are a lot of great people in this movie. I almost chose Stack, you know what I'm saying? Because Stack seems like he would be fun, especially once he turned into a vampire. He was just like, you know what? I can't die no more. I'm all in it, baby. I'm all in it. So that would be fun for all of us. But I'm gonna go ahead and pick the crush from that movie, and I'm gonna pick Mary, who was played by Hailee Steinfeld. But, like, I just. I don't know why I loved her so much in that movie, especially once she's ca. She's so chaotic in, like, such a fun way that's so recognizable to me. And then once she became a vampire, I was just like. She started walking in the room and started doing a little dance. I was like, all right, okay. I see with staxy. Right? I see with Staxy.
D
It felt like every second of that performance, she was like, I'll go full crazy.
C
Yeah.
A
Yeah.
D
I will go full crazy eyes. I will be that. It's really great. I also heard that, you know, she is multiracial. She's maybe like a quarter or an eighth black.
C
Yeah.
D
And her character in the movie has the same kind of plot line.
C
Yeah.
D
I think Ryan Coogler crafted that role specifically for her, given her history.
C
I think so.
D
I found it so fascinating.
C
I think I read the same thing. Like, whatever her character was was her actual, like, DNA makeup as well, which was, I think, you know, the eighth. The drop rule, whatever they used to call it.
D
And I always love it when a secret black pops up in Hollywood. I love a secret black.
A
I didn't know until this movie.
C
Yeah, yeah, right. She's a. She's a secret black. Secret black.
D
Listen. Always.
C
Yeah.
A
I just recently rewatched True Grit where she was, like, a real kid.
D
Yeah.
A
That's like, one of the best, like, kid actor performances I've ever seen, too. She's so good.
C
She's good.
D
She also had a few singles back in the day, and they weren't bad.
C
I forgot she was a Singer. Yeah, I forgot she was a singer. Yeah, because I like, I seen her and stuff. But like after Sinners and how many times saw that movie, like three or four times. I was like, oh, let me do deep dives on like, some of these actors and actresses that, like, I hadn't really, like, checked up on, you know, besides the Michael B. Jordans of the world. So.
B
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
C
All right. That's me. All right. How about Josh? What?
A
You got Josh? Okay, back. Back to me. I'm going. This was, I think, a movie that was well liked when it came out, but I want to give a shout out to a performance that I thought was really good and a character who was really fun, which was Pamela Anderson's character in Naked Gun.
C
Beth.
A
Specifically that scene where she's scat singing at the jazz club to distract the bad guys is so fun and silly. And I think that's great. Slumber party energy. A willingness to commit to just a silly bit wholeheartedly. I thought she was so funny in that.
C
She was fantastic. That movie also was the best comedy of the year. It's a shame. So funny that it has not gotten any awards, love. Because it was a true comedy.
D
The joke density. There was a joke every three seconds. Yeah, it was incredible.
C
Incredible. Until I saw that movie. It made me realize that, like, we haven't been getting joke heavy movies for a very long time.
D
We need it.
A
Yeah, I had the same reaction. I came out of it going, oh, people aren't trying hard enough to make things funny.
C
Yeah. A friend, I don't know if you guys know him, but he's in the LA comedy community. He's a friend of mine, Dan Gregor is, who wrote that with his writing partner and he also wrote the reboot to Chip and Dale that came out a couple years ago.
D
Also, fun fact. He is part of a power comedy couple.
A
Yes.
D
His wife, Rachel Bloom made one of the funniest musical sitcoms of all time. Crazy Ex Girlfriend. Her last Netflix special was also brilliant.
C
She's great.
D
Imagine the two of them at night over dinner, joke after joke after joke. That's what I imagine it to be.
A
They're both great.
C
I've done shows with both of them before and it's just a delight. It's a delight. More married couple. Do you know another married couple that's really funny? Similar to them, Tim Boltz and Lily Sullivan.
A
Oh, yeah.
C
Tim Boltz was Rand from the Righteous Gemstones. Oh, yeah. And then in that, like she played his sister, but that's really his wife. And they are two of the funniest people to do a show individually and to do a show with together. So great.
A
So great.
D
Yeah.
C
Yes. All right, Sam. We're almost. We're almost. We're almost at capacity.
D
Who you got another pick for a slumber party. This is gonna be a controversial pick, but I actually think this is the energy that you want at a slumber party. So I have been geeking over the latest film in the 28 Years, 28 Days later franchise, the Bone Temple.
C
Yes.
D
Directed by Nia DaCosta, who is brilliant. We had a chat last week. It's gonna air this week on my show. She's phenomenal. But there's a scene in which Ray finds a character who is a doctor trying to study what makes the zombies zombies. He at one point in the film, and this is no spoiler, he is in a temple of bones that he has built himself, dressed in a fire retardant outfit, spinning fire while dancing to Iron Maiden. Full crazy. Makes no sense. A thing to behold. But I was like, you know what you want at a good slumber party? Someone who will dance like crazy. Yes.
C
Yeah, absolutely.
A
You need a little bone temple energy, right?
D
You need some bone temple energy because, like, sometimes a good slumber party has to be freaking chaotic.
A
A little off the rails.
D
Yeah.
C
And this, this slumber party that we got going on is very chaotic right now because my last pick is gonna be very chaotic as well. O. I love it. Now, this movie is probably still or recently out of theaters or was currently in theaters. Maybe still in it, who knows? It's a movie called Send Help. It's the movie with Rachel McAdams, you Sam Raimi.
D
Oh, I've been seeing billboards all over. I hear it's pretty good.
C
It is very, very good.
D
I like her.
C
She's great in it. Her character's name is Linda Little.
A
Great.
C
Now, I don't want to spoil anything in this movie, but here's what I'll say. The movie itself. Her character is so resourceful, like the movie, and this isn't a spoiler, but she works for a new boss who's a jerk, and they go on a company retreat, the plane crashes and they end up stranded on an island. And the roles reverse. She's the boss now. She's so resourceful, which, like somebody who's like, resourceful who knows how to put a spread together, who knows how to. If you ain't got it, she'll figure it out. Like, that's the perfect person to have at a Slumber party. And she's crazy. And I love it. I love it.
D
Yes. I feel like you always need on your team a girl Scout slash boy Scout role.
C
Yes.
A
I think that's right.
D
That one who's just crafty and can do stuff. I feel that.
C
Yes.
D
I feel that.
A
Someone who can go MacGyver style.
C
Yes, yes. But before she gets to, like, insane energy, she's very mild and meek. She's just there to have. She talks to her bird, you know, she just likes to talk. She just, you know, she just wants to have a good time.
D
She's.
C
She would be the perfect slumber party person, because when the night gets wild, she gonna get wild right with you.
D
Love this ideal slumber party guest.
A
Incredible guest list across the board, wire to wire. I think we've really nailed it.
C
We nailed it.
D
Proud of us.
A
Me too.
C
And this is just ours. Nobody else is invited.
A
Just the nine of us.
C
I love it. I love it. Well, thank y' all both for helping me create the perfect guest list for the perfect slumber party. It was amazing. Happy to do it, Sam. It's always a pleasure when I get to do anything with you. You're great.
D
This is delightful. Y' all are great, man.
C
I appreciate you.
D
I'm gonna go real meta and play this episode myself.
C
Yes.
D
As I fall asleep. Whoa.
C
Please do let us know if it sends you into a weird sleep vortex listening to yourself.
D
Hopefully I'll have dreams of Ralph Fine's character from the bone table and SZA's character from one of them days. Teaming up could be fun. Could be great.
A
Sounds like a good dream.
C
Could be so fun. Sam, you already mentioned something that I'm excited for. You have an interview with Nia DaCosta. Where can people check out stuff you're working on? What do you want to tell people about?
D
Yeah, so my big job right now, I host a radio show slash podcast, slash YouTube show called the Sam Sanders show, and it's all about entertainment and the things that entertain us. So I talk a lot with directors, actors, writers, and musicians, also comedians and journalists about the fun stuff. It's awards season, so I have been making the rounds with some of the big contenders for the Oscars this year. I was lucky enough to interview the costume designer behind all the looks in Sinners, Ruth E. Carter.
A
Oh, she's a legend.
D
Yeah, she's a legend. She's done so many movies. She came up with Spike Lee, like, way back in the day, and she's like Black Panther. That was her. Malcolm X. That was her, she's just a legend. I also interviewed the songwriter that made the big song in that Summons the Spirit. I'm talking about Raphael Siddiq and R and B legend. He wrote that song.
C
Yeah, I didn't know that.
D
Yeah, Raphael Siddiq wrote the song that then becomes the whole mashup of all the genres and time periods. And most recently, I got to interview Nia DaCosta, a director who I'm obsessed with. She has done films in every genre in just a few years, and she is the director of the Bone Temple. She was the one calling the shots when Ralph Fiennes was twirling fire and dancing to Iron Maiden in a bone temple. That was her.
A
Cool.
D
So those conversations live wherever you get your podcasts. They live on YouTube and the show also runs on about 117 public radio stations across the country every weekend. Cool. Just search for the Sam Sanders show and you can find it.
C
Beautiful. I love it. Well, you're an icon, Sam. This has been a pleasure. And before me and Josh turn our heads in, is there anybody out there you want to give a special goodnight to? Anybody that feel. Anybody or anything that feels right?
D
I want to send a special good night to whoever in my neighborhood does fireworks for no reason. Good night. Go to bed. God bless la. I love la. I'm never going to be a narc. I'm never going to call the cops on you because. No, but, but the fireworks, y'.
B
All.
D
Someone did fireworks in my neighborhood. Super Bowl Sunday.
C
That's wild.
D
Wasn't even an LA team in the game.
C
Wasn't even an LA team.
D
Just come on now.
C
No reason.
D
There's no reason.
C
It was raining on New Year's Eve and everybody in LA was like, oh, good, no fireworks tonight. Still fireworks.
A
Still fireworks,
C
Louisiana, baby. Louisiana.
A
Well, good night to the fireworks center offers of Los Angeles. Yes. And thank you so much for joining us, Sam. This was really wonderful. We'll be back tomorrow and every night, but for now, it's time to turn in. Good night, Sam. Good night, jiggies.
C
Good night, you two.
D
Good night, y'.
C
All.
D
Sleep well,
C
Sam.
