B
Hey out there, slumber buddies. I'm Kristen.
A
And I'm Jacques. Welcome to the Nightly from Hatch a slumber party for the pop culture lovers. And boy, oh, boy, do we have some pop culture love to give out to y' all tonight. But before we do that, I'm still buzzing from a lot of things that have happened, especially the fact that I get to share this pillow fort with you. Kristen, how are you?
B
Oh, my gosh. I am buzzing as well. I'm excited to catch up on the Golden Globes, which we'll. But before we even talk about the Golden Globes, can we talk about the fact that an ad starring you ran during the Golden Globes last night?
A
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm in a progressive ad that is currently running as of this pillow for a slumber party. And yeah, you know, I'm in that realm where everybody's texting and like, I saw you, man. I saw you. So I think I'm forever grateful for stuff like that.
B
Yes. And it was watched by millions of people all over the world, which means you were watched by millions of people around the world. So it's a pretty good night to have your add on, right?
A
I'll take it. I'll take it. Yeah, yeah.
B
Speaking of the Globes, it's time for us to recap what actually happened. You and I had a lot of predictions last time we did. We had a lot of hopes, a lot of dreams. So let's go over some of the things that happened. But reminder to listeners before we do this, this show was 3 hours and 15 minutes long. We can't cover all of it, but it's. If there's anything we missed that you really want to talk about, just, you know, email us at thenightlyach. Co And Jacquees, you and I will cover it on a future episode. We can talk about it later, but we'll just try to go over some of the big moments from last night, some of the moments that made us laugh or cringe. And then, of course, we'll go over some of the awards that we had predictions for. How does that sound?
A
I love it. And, you know, listen, we're in award season right now, so, you know, if you love award talk as you're falling asleep, you're in the right place.
B
Absolutely, absolutely. Shall we start with last night's opening monologue with our host, with our master of ceremonies, Nikki Glaser, comedian extraordinaire. Her second time hosting. What did you think, Jacques?
A
Super funny. To come in for the second time in a row and still, like, just kill the room and be delightful and funny and have good energy abound is a very hard thing to do. So she gets an A in my book. I thought she was great.
B
Totally agree. She was totally able to walk the line between reverence for the stars, but also gently roasting them. Very gently. One joke in particular I thought was hilarious, Chuckice, was when she was saying to Leonardo DiCaprio, so great to have you here tonight. My God, Leo, everything you've accomplished, you've worked with every major director. You've won so many awards, Oscars, Golden Globes. You are a huge deal, and you've done it all before your girlfriend even turned 30. I loved that because he famously, you know, never dates a woman over the age of 26. And so I thought that was very funny. But even though that was kind of a repeat joke, we've heard a lot about Leo. As you were saying, Jacques, there's only so much material to work with. Nikki Glaser then followed it up saying, I know that I'm rehashing an old joke, but we don't really have much material to work with. You know, Leo, you're just not very forthcoming. You keep it close to the best. The most revealing thing anybody knows about you is from a 1991 Teen Beat magazine interview you gave where you revealed that your favorite food was pasta, pasta and more pasta. And I thought that was hilarious. And if you looked it up, it's true. He actually did give an interview in 1991, and that was the most revealing thing he said in the whole interview was that he liked pasta. So I thought that was pretty funny that she. She knew when she was rehashing stuff. She knew how to do callbacks. She knew how to make fun of things that were actually real. But nothing was too mean. It was just funny. I thought.
A
I thought she was great. I loved the Leo joke as well. And I also love, you know, you can tell when genuine laughter, like, comes. And, like, that tickled him when she was like, we just don't know nothing about you, bro. That tickled him. Like, you could tell that that gave him a nice little laugh. So I thought that was really cool, too.
B
Hats off, Nikki Glaser. We enjoyed you. But shall we move to some of the things that stood out to us about the show?
A
A lot stood out. Let's talk about it.
B
Yeah. So what jumped out to you? Any surprises? Any snubs? Anything that you really liked or disliked about the show?
A
I mean, you know, I. I do have what I wished would have happened, but I also rarely confuse what I wish would have happened with what I likely know is going to happen. So in that realm, there weren't many surprises. Obviously, I wish Sinners would have done better in some of the categories that they were in. But I knew, like, some of the winners that we got are the favorites. A couple of surprises to me. One, I think the biggest surprise and the biggest snub that I just don't agree with, regardless of what anybody says, is one battle after another winning best screenplay. And that's not a knock on the screenplay. I think the screenplay is great. I think PTA is great. I know we're in an era where if somebody says, I like waffles, people be like, oh, you hate pancakes. And like, that's not life. Like, I like waffles and pancakes. You know, like, so one battle after another is fantastic. It's truly one of the better movies I've seen this year. But I just thought the screenplay of Sinners was much stronger just from a writing perspective and an originality perspective. But everything else was. You know, I was surprised. The actor from what was The Secret Agent 1. Best Actor.
B
Yes. The Secret Agent won several awards last night. Like, that was a big surprise to me. I didn't really think the Secret Agent was gonna be winning so many awards, but it did. Yeah.
A
Yeah. And the gentleman's name was Wagner Mora, the actor from the Secret Agent who won best actor in a dramatic leading role. And, you know, obviously Chalamet is probably the favorite going forward for the Oscar season. Cause that's when they merged the two comedic and dramatic categories together. So, you know, that was no surprise he won that. But the dramatic winner was who I was thinking is gonna be like, kind of the Dark Horse or the. Like, maybe they can win. And I just knew it was gonna be either Leo in My Dark Horse favorite Michael B. Jordan. And so the fact that it was Wagner means that we could be in for a very surprising Oscar season going forward.
B
Yeah, that was very surprising. Wagner Mora also. I mean, this is a foreign language film. It's a Brazilian film. And how often does a foreign language film end up having a best actor at an American awards show? Not very often.
A
Yeah.
B
Another big surprise for me, and I think also for the Globes producers themselves, was when Stellan Skarsgrd won for acting for Sentimental value. Clearly the producers didn't think he was gonna win because they sat him in the back of the room and it took him four years to get to that podium. He was walking and walking. Eventually, halfway through the room, he started passing his fellow nominees who were definitely front runners. And I was like, this is so disrespectful. This is a skars guard you're talking about. You sat him all the way back.
A
What.
B
What is happening here?
A
Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was a surprise. I was a little surprised by. Well, not surprised, because she was fantastic and it's a fun show and I really enjoyed it, but I did not think Rhae Sehorn was gonna win, man. Yeah. And it's not a deserving thing. I. Out of the shows that I've seen, I think there were, for me personally, stronger winner possibilities that I thought would take front, but, you know, deserving. She was great. She's good.
B
I was thrilled with that one. And I would say she had a tough job on Pluribus because. Well, first of all, you know, Jakis, I love Pluribus, but same. A lot of her work she had to do on that show. She was acting frequently with herself as the only person in the scene. And to me, that seems really hard to do that kind of acting in a way that's still going to hold the audience's attention. And there were a lot of two hander scenes where it's just her and one other person or it's just her by herself. So I'm just thinking, yeah, somewhat surprising, but very deserved. And so I was all about that. Actually, now that we're getting into categories, should we just go through some of the categories that we had predictions for Jacqueese and see what we wanted to win and see what happened? Should we do that? All right, so best film for comedy. You and I both predicted one battle after another would win, but I also said I'd be fine if Begonia won. And in the end, we were both right. One battle after another won. And as you mentioned, Jacques, it also won for screenplay, it won for director, for actress, it won for. Or supporting actress, I should say. It won for a lot of things. It really cleaned up last night. It's not a bad movie. It's not the one I was rooting for.
A
Yeah, not the one I was rooting for. And it's a good movie. You know, it is the movie. I know people hate hearing this. It is the movie that typically does well in award shows. Seasons like this. You could take from that whatever you Want to take from that and pta.
B
Yeah. Paul Thomas Anderson. Yep.
A
It's his turn. And, like, you know, that's another conversation that we can have. How Hollywood will skip over you when you probably deserve it and then give it to you when it's your. Like, it's finally your turn. And this felt like one of those. But also, still, it's a great film.
B
All right, let's do best film drama. This is a tough one for both of us because we both really wanted Sinners to win. As you already mentioned, sinners did not clean up like we wanted it to. I was saying during our last episode, I thought Hamnet might end up being the winner, even though we both wanted Sinners to win. And sure enough, Hamnet won for the best drama. You were saying Jacquees, last time we were talking about it, you're like, it's a shame that Hamnet might win because it's, you know, a historical love story with famous people being depicted. It's like, oh, here's Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway falling in love and raising a family. And it's kind of like Oscar bait. It's an awards movie, and it won. And so did Jessie Buckley, who is the star of Hamnet. She won an award also. She's very good in it. But it's not a surprising choice.
A
It seems like it's an uninspiring choice.
B
Exactly.
A
And, you know, how many Shakespeare in love movies can we get? I do think that we are seeing all the decision makers still rewarding things that, you know, they know, hit, which is not surprising for, you know, an academy or a foreign press or anyone where it comes out that they don't even really watch the movies that they're voting for. And that just recently became a rule that you actually have to watch.
B
Yeah. Remember when it came out where, like, half of them weren't watching moonlight, but they were voting for it because they heard they were supposed to vote for Moonlight?
A
Yeah.
B
It's like, no, you should be watching these two.
A
Still watch the movies. Still watch the movies.
B
Yeah. Moonlight's a fantastic movie, but you should also watch it.
A
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
B
Let's talk about TV series. So for best comedy, you and I both predicted the studio, and of course, Jacquees, the studio won for best TV comedy.
A
Studio's fun. I liked it. I really enjoyed the studio. I think it's fun. I got a couple friends in it, so I always love seeing my friends win.
B
Oh, nice.
A
It's the type of show that, again, is very teed up for award season. But it for me, I'm like, I think it, you know, lives up to the hype of this show will clean up, especially in a comedy category where a show like the Bear has won so many times, which is not a comedy. So I appreciate that an actual comedy wins a comedy category. I will say one thing I'm disappointed about.
B
What's that?
A
Now, if you've never watched the studio, you won't know what I'm about to say. I was disappointed. Nobody thanked Sal Saperstein. I was. I mean, it was just teed up right there for you to do it. I don't want to spoil it. But the studio does have an episode in the show about the Golden Globes, and it's a very funny episode. And go watch that episode and what I just said will make complete sense. And if they would have did that, it would have been the perfect comedy moment. I think as a fan of the show.
B
Now, Jacquees, you may remember I was. Even though we both thought the studio would win, I was saying I would love it if Hacks won, though Hacks obviously didn't win. But shout out to Jean Smart, lead actress on Hacks. She did win an award last night, and I thought it was well deserved. I think Jean Smart is fantastic. There is one category left, though. I think we really need to talk about Chiquis, because you and I were. I don't want to say button heads about this exactly, but there seemed to be some disagreement because I was really hoping best original song would go to golden from K Pop Demon Hunters. And your heart was with the theater geek in you, that little kid who loved the stage. You wanted one of the songs from Wicked to win best original song to keep hope alive for all the theater nerds out there.
A
Yes, I will say that I did not think it was going to win.
B
You just wanted it to. You just wanted it. Yes.
A
I did not think it was going to win. Not even a little bit. So the theater geek in me would have loved for it to get a little recognition, especially for a show or movie where most of the songs that people would love can't be nominated because they're not original, you know, because they came from the Broadway musical. So it would have to reward. That would have been cool. But go ahead and say it. Go ahead and say it.
B
Golden from k Pop Demon Hunters 1. I love that song. I love the song.
A
It's a good song. Yeah, it's a good song. Shoot. It was. It was a number one song.
B
Yeah.
A
Like in on the charts for all over the world.
B
Yeah, all over the world. And I, I think it's a great song. It also won for best animated feature, K Pop Demon Hunter's Dead. And there is talk of a sequel now, but apparently if they make a sequel, it won't be out until 2029 because that's how long it took to make the first movie. So, yeah, you're going to have to wait a while if you want that sequel.
A
We're going to have to wait. We have to wait. Well, listen, you know, we get the spider verse movie and then after that we'll get some more K Pop Demon Hunter. So listen, you, you, you called it. You were right. I agreed with it as far as I thought it would win. But, but ultimately I'm not mad at a musical like this winning. My fear is that the copycats we're about to get will not be as good as that. So we'll see. We'll see, though. We'll see.
B
All right, well, was there anything else that really stood out to you, Jakis? Anything that made you go, oh, my gosh, I can't believe that's happening? Anything that's wild. Anything that made you smile?
A
Yeah, well, you know, let me, can we give a, let me give a couple shout outs and some funny moments. A couple shout out to a former co star of mine that won a Golden Globe last night, Rose Byrne.
B
Yes.
A
Or if I had legs, I'd kick you. I was in a TV show that she starred in, Physical, so very nice, very nice person, very funny. Although whether this was a comedy or not, who, who can say? I don't think it was a comedy.
B
I'm just gonna say I think it's a very, very tense, unrelenting, brutal movie that I'm like, hold on, was I supposed to laugh during that?
A
Yeah, I, I'm not. I can't argue.
B
But her acting is excellent. She's a great actor.
A
She's great, she's great, she's great. Also some fun moments for me outside of Nikki Glaser. Some moments that made me laugh. Don Cheadle is always, you know, I love him. Tops for me. And then, you know, there was some. I appreciate that Snoop Dogg was high, uh, giving out his award. Keep being you brother. And then, but for the best podcast award, which, you know, do we really need a category like that?
B
Not at the Golden Globes. No. There are other awards shows for that.
A
Maybe not at the Golden Globes, as I say this on a podcast, but I will say that I thought the smartless guys coming out and that little bit that they had with Jason Bateman.
B
Making fun of him.
A
Yeah, yeah, I thought that was very funny. So, like those moments too.
B
I'm not sure if very many other people caught it, but there's one moment where I just paused in my tracks and said, oh my God, does Alicia Silverstone not know she's on camera right now? Nikki Glaser was doing a little like 90 second bit where she was talking about what are the most searched things on Google right now related to the Golden Globes, But Alicia Silverstone was in the background, scowling, possibly falling asleep, possibly inebriated. And it's been captured on a few different TikToks, but I was just like, whoa, Alicia Silverstone, you're on camera, honey. You're on camera.
A
Oh, no.
B
What is going on here? Alicia, why do you look so upset? Just for 90 seconds, look happy, please. But you know, it's all. You can drink wine at the Golden Globes famously. There are famously tipsy moments that happen at the Golden Globe. So maybe this was just a case of Alicia drinking too much champagne. I'm not sure.
A
Hey, listen, you know, she, she was drinking that. She was on the juice. She was on that juice. Alicia Silverstone, one of my first crushes.
B
From Clueless from that era.
A
Nah, not from Clueless. I want to give you a deep cut. It was called Crush with Carrie Ells, I think and, or maybe mispronouncing his name. But it was a crazy movie and she was a villain. But you know, 10 year old Jacques watching Alicia Silverstone in that movie, I was like, yes, I'm all, I'm all in. So by the time she came out with Clueless, I was like, that's my boo right there. That's my boo. So I love me some Alicia Silverstone growing up. I'm glad she's, I'm glad she's back.
B
And enjoying her champagne.
A
Enjoying her champagne and scowling at the Golden Globes. Scowl on, girl. Scowl on.
B
Oh, I love that Jakis. That is such a final sweet little image to end on little 10 year old Chiquis watching his VHS or his DVD tape with Alicia Silverstone just being.
A
Like, that's my, what's that Usher song with Alicia Keith, My boo. I was singing that before Usher even sang it. Oh, well, it's a terrible movie, but I loved it.
B
Wow.
A
I loved it.
B
It's great to end our slumber party talking about a terrible movie after a not so terrible Golden Globes. And it was a pretty good Golden Globes. It was not too bad. And now, I don't know about you, Jacques, but I'm ready to call it a night.
A
I'm ready to call it a night, too. But I gotta say one thing and I. And listen, this is for all my Chicago Bear fans and your pillow forts going to sleep tonight. We did it. We beat the Green Bay Packers. We did it. Yeah, we beat them in the playoffs. I'm still sleeping fantastically from that, and I know you are, too. So sleep well. I hope both sides of your pillows are cold tonight and will be for the rest of the week. And for all the Packer fans out there, I still love you. It's okay. It's okay. But this is for Chicago. This is Chicago. So I gotta say that I can't leave the pillow fort without saying, bear down, baby. Bear down.
B
Well, on that note, I hope everybody has a sweet night, a happy night, sweet dreams. Whatever team you're cheering for, whatever star you're cheering for, I hope in your dreams they win. Good night, Jacques.
