B
Hey, Slumber party friends.
A
Hi, friends.
B
I'm Kristen.
A
And I'm Jack East. Welcome to the Nightly from Hatch. And this is a slumber party for the pop culture lovers. We are here. We are in the pillow fort. I hope you're having a beautiful night wherever you are, because we are. Right, Kristin?
B
Yes, we. We are having a great night, Jackie. It's just, you know, cozy in here. It's that time of year when it's fun to be cozy in a fort. You know, get under some blankets, call it a day, and then call it a day. Just talk about, you know, a few happy things before we drift off to sleep. And something that's making me happy is the Nightgeist. So the Nightgeist listeners, this is what's lighting up our feeds right now. What has been piquing our interest. And tonight, let's start out with you, Jacquis. What is lighting up your feed?
A
You know, it's lighting up my feed. Not to make it sad, so I want to make it a celebration, but we recently lost Catherine o'. Hara.
B
Yes, yes.
A
Wonderful actress. And, you know, and although it's very sad, one thing that we should do no matter what, whether people are with us or no longer with us, is give flowers and celebrate the work that people have graciously given us throughout their lives. And Catherine o' Hara gave us some great work. And I just want to say, like, I grew up with her and like a lot of us have. And my gosh, just like every frame of everything she's ever been in, I'm like, she was brilliant. She was so brilliant. And it's been such a pleasure being able to see clips and making me want to go back and watch, you know, some, some great, some great movies. And me and you have talked about this a lot. Cause, you know, you're a Christmas fan and we talk Christmas movies and you know, I, I watch Catherine O' Hara every holiday season. Cause I watch Home Alone 1 and 2 every holiday season.
B
So.
A
Yeah, you know, very, very sad loss in the entertainment world, but a beautiful career. And I'm so thankful that we were able to witness it and experience it. But that's what, that's what's been blowing up my feed lately. Just, just a lot of flowers for the best among us. And I appreciate that.
B
Oh, yeah, And I've loved the tributes I agree with you, Jacques. It's just like a great reminder of her 50 year career. I mean, how many people have an entertainment career that lasts half a century? And she did everything from SCTV to, oh my gosh, all the mockumentary movies that were so hilarious. Like Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman. So good. And of course Beetlejuice and Schitt's Creek. And so to see people from all these different parts of her history giving her those tributes, Chris Columbus saying, oh, I hope you and John Candy are having a great time in heaven and laughing right now. Or Pedro Pascal, people who you may not have even realized worked with her, talking about what a great person she was, sharing those clips, sharing those photos. I gotta say, it's really been warming my heart to see all that, Jackie. So I agree with you.
A
I saw a clip earlier today of her. Curb youb Enthusiasm is one of my favorite comedy shows and I forgot she was on it for a couple episodes. And just like I said, every frame of every piece of art that she has given us. She's brilliant. What's been blowing up the night guys for you, Kristen?
B
I have been seeing nonstop memes, moments, red carpet fashion from the Grammys. And I gotta say, I like what's in my feed more than I liked the show. Cause the show was over three and a half hours long. They only gave out 10 awards. So in three and a half plus hours, how do you only give out 10 awards?
A
Really? I didn't even notice that. It's a lot of performances.
B
So many performances. Comedy bits that dragged out too long. Trevor, Noah, I love you, but some of the shtick just dragged on too long in my opinion. Leave Bad Bunny alone. Just like introduce the next presenter. Come on, let's move along here. He was fanboying over Bad Bunny so much where I'm like, present an award. People present an award. But I have been loving seeing people posting about the fashion and the funny moments. So one thing I've seen posted a lot, for example, was Chapel Rowan on the red carpet in her barely there dress. Did you see that? Chuckies?
A
Oh, yeah, I saw them. Boobs out.
B
Yep, they were out there. They sure were. Nipple rings holding up what was very sheer fabric. When she was on stage presenting the Best New Artist award, she did have more fabric in her chest area than she did on the red carpet. But yep, everything was there. It sure was.
A
Everything was there. Listen, you know, I'm. Who, who am I to tell you how much clothes to have on? I just appreciate that's all. That's all.
B
Yeah.
A
And I appreciated it. Beautiful fashion throughout the night. I gotta. I feel like I'm just like the sad boy today because one of my favorite moments from the Grammys night was the tribute to d'. Angelo.
B
Yeah, yeah.
A
You know, I grew up with d'. Angelo. Just beautiful singer, R and B legend. And having Lauryn Hill who thankfully showed up on time.
B
Oh, my gosh, I have to agree with you. I'm like, is Lauryn Hill actually gonna show up? They're really advertising this a lot. And sometimes she doesn't show up.
A
Yeah. For those who don't know, Lauryn Hill is notorious for when I say being late, I mean like three hours late to shows. Like not just 10 or just no showing. Be like, ah, I was doing something el. All off the backs of one album. Maybe two if you count the Fugees. But whatever. Classic album. It was a great tribute. So that was one of my favorite moments. And can I talk about my most favorite moment of the night?
B
Yeah, yeah.
A
First of all, I am a Kendrick Lamar fan. He is one of the Goats. All his awards. He became the most winningest hip hop artist of all time last night. That was beautiful.
B
And well deserved. And well deserved, in my opinion. Very well deserved.
A
Yes. He won, which I was. But very happy about. He won record of the year for Luther, which led to my favorite moment, which was Cher saying, ooh, Luther Vandross.
B
Poor cher. She's like 80 years old. They had her simultaneously accepting a lifetime achievement award, but then also having to give record of the year. And I think it was all just too much for her.
A
It was too much for her to.
B
Have to do all at once. It was just too much.
A
My favorite. My favorite thing is, even though Luther has been gone for a while now that she got so excited, she was about to see Luther again.
B
Bless your heart, Cher. Bless you.
A
It was very great. The speeches were great. Kendrick gives great speeches all the time, so the whole moment was great.
B
Yeah. And so did Sza, Because, Luther, we have to give our props to SZA too, because.
A
Oh, of course she made that song.
B
Yes, exactly. Yeah, yeah.
A
It was a full collaboration. So those are a couple of my favorite moments from the night.
B
Nice, nice. One of my favorite moments was just the opening performance and Bruno Mars singing Apatop. And it was such a high energy way to start the show, which is part of what disappointed me with the rest of the show. I'm like, why did the rest of the show not keep this energy up? It just dragged A lot. But I really love that high energy opening. One slow moment I did appreciate, though, was Justin Bieber performing in only his boxer shorts. He was performing a very stripped down version of UConn. No pun intended. Or maybe a pun intended. He was stripped down, but it really gave him a chance to show off that he has a pretty singing voice. And I think sometimes people forget he's not just a child star. He also does have a pretty singing voice and he got to show it off.
A
Yeah, people forget that he has a great. He has a great voice. I did enjoy the clip's performance. I enjoyed the contrast from the white choir, you know, heavenly light to when, you know, malice and Pusha were rapping the red devil drug dealing light. And then not many people knew this. Cause I was watching it with my mom and I just started cracking up when the snow starts coming down. And she was like, oh, that's nice. And I was like, that's a metaphor for cocaine.
B
Mom. Let me tell you something.
A
I loved it. I absolutely thought it was so funny. Because if you don't know that, then you just like, oh, snow.
B
And I would have liked more of that in the show. I just wish there was more of, like the high energy and the wackiness and I don't know, maybe I'm expecting the Grammys to be more youthful and fun and more MTV Music Awards or something, but sometimes they're just like too slow and too staged. So those moments like you just mentioned, I'm like, more of that, please. More of that.
A
So, yeah, I didn't. I did not watch the entire Grammys. I watched about half of it live and then like clipped it up for the rest of it. Three and a half hours is a very long time.
B
It's a very long time, by the way. More than three and a half hours. It was supposed to be three and a half hours, which is already too long, and then they went over schedule.
A
Too long. Yeah. To only have 10 awards too, because, you know, listen, a lot of great speeches. There's a lot of great speeches that's happening. I loved bad Bunny coming in, giving his whole speech, basically in Spanish, say.
B
For a coup icon legend. Yes.
A
That was beautiful. Like I said, Kendrick always makes me happy when he talks. Shout out to Olivia Dean, who's fantastic.
B
Yes.
A
Won best new artist.
B
Oh, my God. Beautiful speech. And she just, you know, I really want good things for her. I think that maybe you know about this, Jeff. Yes. I think there's a curse of best new artists that a lot of people never Outrun, like Milli Vanilli. But, you know, if you can outrun that curse and you can be, you know, an Adele instead, then I hope that happens. I hope that happens.
A
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Agreed. You didn't enjoy Trevor Noah. You said, or didn't enjoy him as much. He just dragged. But product of the show.
B
No, I really. I want to say, first of all, I like Trevor Noah. I think he's very funny. He looked fantastic last night, the second half of the show, in that blue velvet jacket with a brooch. He's charming. He's good looking. I just think sometimes he dragged it out too long. Like he had this ongoing shtick where he tried to get Bad Bunny to sing with him all night. And I'm like. By the third time, I'm like, you know what, Trevor Noah, this schtick isn't funny anymore. You just keep on going with this and move on to another joke. He wasn't not saying he was bad at the job. I just think some of the jokes dragged too much and repeated themselves too much. That's all. And I wanted awards to be handed out. I didn't realize they were only gonna give 10 awards. That's not Trevor's fault. Trevor Noah didn't make that decision. But I just. I would have liked that more.
A
Yeah, I get that 100%. Yeah, Trevor's great. I do love Trevor. But, you know, we've talked about this, how being a host of any of these shows is a very thankless job. And if I'm not mistaken, this is Trevor's. He's done it multiple times now.
B
Yeah, it's like eight times or something. Or five times. It's been many times.
A
It's been many times. Which, like, you know, eventually that gets. That gets even more hard, too, when you start having.
B
How do you keep it fresh? How do you keep people excited? And. Yep, it's me again, guys. Yeah.
A
Yeah. That gets hard. That gets hard. Yeah, for sure.
B
So, I mean, no shade on Trevor Noah. I do love him. I just. And I don't think it's his fault. It's a thankless task, but I just wish the producers wrote and paced things differently, and I think it would have been a better show then.
A
Agreed. Agreed.
B
Jacquees. Speaking of the Grammys, we received a message from a listener about the Grammys. Let's read this out loud from listener Harry.
A
I got you. So the message says, the in memoriam section was really great. All love for the Ozzy Osbourne and d' Angelo tributes.
B
Yes.
A
But why did they have to do a second section like a half an hour later and still not give any time and attention to Rick Davies? A total snub.
B
All right, so, Harry, first of all, I agree with you. I think the in memoriam section was a hot mess. There were like three different in memoriams, essentially. Like the one with Reba McIntyre, the one with. That was a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne with Slash and what's his name from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and everybody. And then the one with Lauryn Hill, and it was just like one in memoriam after another. And it went on for a very long time. And Rick Davies, folks, if you don't know who he is, he was from Supertramp. His name just appeared briefly on the screen behind Reba McEntire as she was singing, as all these names came up on the screen behind her. So if you blinked, you probably missed Rick Davies name. It was up there and then it was gone. So that was kind of weird. While. Why did Ozzy Osbourne get a giant tribute? But then some people like Rick Davies only got one second or Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys got 15 seconds as a tribute. I mean, the Beach Boys are legends, but he got a 15 second tribute. How did that happen? So I'm not sure who was in charge here.
A
Yeah, you know, listen, I may be a little biased here because I grew up listening to d' Angelo more than Ozzy Osbourne and Brian Wilson. I also think that on a typical year, a name like d' Angelo and a genre like R and B doesn't get a lot of love for the Grammys. Whereas, you know, your Beach Boys and your Ozzy Osbournes, rightfully so, but tend to take up a lot of the space for these type of things where some artists, especially in certain genres or certain persuasions, don't always get the love. And so I did love that we got d' Angelo love in this because he was such a big R B legend. And R B has kind of fallen off in the music world over the past while now. So especially getting the love from it and getting legends to sing from them. And I love when they panned over to the empty piano and Lauren saying, like, they never got to play that song together, which was a tragedy. And so, like, I do love that they gave the space for that if you were gonna choose one. However, Brian Wilson is a very big. He's a legend in the game too, you know, And Ozzy Osbourne, legend in the game. It's. It's one of Those things where I think, you know, again, it's just gonna be hard to please everyone. And if you're gonna do three sections of it and it was very long, you know, to choose the three, I, I don't know. It's a, it's something that I, I wouldn't wanna make a decision about personally.
B
So I would wanna make a decision Jacquees.
A
That's fair.
B
And, and I am announcing right now no more agents, managers or label executives in memoriam. Nobody wants to see those.
A
Yeah, people don't generally know who they are.
B
The people at home don't wanna see that. We don't wanna hear about the C suite manager that like.
A
No, I think, you know, probably the people that wanna see it are the family members of the people who have passed. And so maybe figuring out a way that we can still tribute to those people. But if you're gonna have tributes, like, let that take up more of the time for some of the people who have touched us in many ways in the music world or in any of these worlds that we generally get these in memoriams for. And I don't know, I don't know. Like, I don't know if you Star wars scrolls the other names or.
B
Can you imagine 10,000 names that are scrolling down the screen?
A
Oh my gosh.
B
Well, Harry, thank you so much for writing in. Thanks for giving us a chance to also vent about the in memoriam Harry and listeners reminder. You can always reach out to us at thenightlyach co. We love hearing from you. We love reading your letters out loud and, you know, having a conversation with you from afar while we're all cuddled up in our pillow forts and you're in your pillow fort.
A
Yes. Can I say one more night Geist thing that.
B
Yes, please do.
A
I have been seeing and I want to give a recommendation. Like, can we give recommendations? Let's give a pillow fort recommendation. I saw a movie a couple nights ago called Send Help. I Love Sandhel Rachel McAdams. I love it and it was very fun. It was very, very fun. It was a fun movie. Rachel McAdams is great. I've. I've loved her for a very long time and you know, she's such a great actress. She was great in it. Dylan o' Brien is the, is the other lead in the movie and it was just such a fun movie. And I don't want to spoil it or anything like that, but if you're looking for a fun movie, couple hours recommendation, get you your popcorn, sit in the seats and just be taken away in the theater. Go check out, send help while they're still in town. It was really fun. It was really fun.
B
Yeah. And for those who have not seen the trailer and don't know what it's about, we have Rachel McAdams who is really doing all the work for her bosses and getting none of the credit and being treated terribly by them. And the dynamics shift up after a plane crash and who's really in charge now. Who actually has the know how, who knows how to survive any. Is it the bosses in the C suite or is it the put upon person who's been running the show the whole time? I think, you know, and watching the dynamics switch back and forth of who's in charge, of who thinks they should be in charge and so on. It's fun to watch and it's just so over the top. I was squealing, I was clapping, I was covering my eyes, I was cheering. I was doing it all watching at Jucky's. Yeah.
A
Yeah. It was fun. It was a fun one.
B
Great recommendation.
A
Go check it out. Great recommendation. Thank you very much. I really enjoyed it and think that a lot of people that I've been seeing are also enjoying it. So it's a fun one to go. Go see.
B
Well, on that note, Jacques, I am feeling pretty sleepy and I'm feeling ready to turn in. How about you?
A
I'm getting ready to send some sheets so we can count them and snooze off Dreamland. I'm feeling great and.
B
I think it's.
A
Time for me to go ahead and shut it down and turn in. So I'll talk to you next time. Good night, Krista.
B
Good night, Chuckies.
