Christina Perry
I was laughing on Saturday night because I was singing. I got on stage and like sang with my brother and his band. And then at 10pm and at 11pm I was literally catching barf, like, from my kids.
Bri
This is the Nicki and Bri show. What up, everyone? Today we are so excited to be joined by a multi platinum singer songwriter whose heart touching songs has resonated with millions, especially these two girls sitting on the couch. She is now adding something special to her career and author. It is such a pleasure to have you. Christina Berry.
Christina Perry
Yes.
Nikki
Oh, hello. So Bri and I are so excited to get into your new children's book, A Thousand Years. And we were wondering what inspired you to write a children's book and why did you choose A Thousand Years as the theme?
Christina Perry
Okay, so this is just such a special story for me. I. I guess. Well, it was 2011 when I wrote this song originally for the movie Twilight. So I did be. I mean, I really was a Twilight fan, I have to admit. I was more of a TWI. Hard. I was like, hard.
Bri
Oh, yeah.
Christina Perry
And so I will not deny that, but I wrote this song for the movie and it was like very specific. It was like, you know, you go in, you screen the film. They were like, we need a song for the wedding scene. And I was like, okay, great, I made it a waltz. I was like, you know, this is what, you know, I'm submitting for this film. And so that's where it started. And then the song got chosen, but not for the wedding. They were like, we're actually going to put it in the credits. And I was like, cool. I'm. This is still the coolest thing that's ever happened to me ever. Because it's my favorite books, my favorite movies. And so this is 2011. And then 2012, the fans were like, oh, hey, we know that Christina Perry is a TWI Hard. And so we want this song. So, like, they. I feel like they knew because there was a Bruno Mars song that was on the radio. But then I feel like they were like, we know Bruno isn't a twi. Hard. And so like, they swapped out and they put my song on the radio as a single for the film. And I was like, wow, that's really cool. And then so all of a sudden, like, the fans just. Just loved it the most. And then because of that, then the filmmakers were like, oh, let's put like a seven minute version of A Thousand Years in the last film. And I was like, cool. So then I did this like orchestral version of it. And then. And a duet at the time with my boyfriend. And it was like this, you know, this new version. And then I. I thought maybe like that was it. And then all the people who love started to get married. This is all just like in real time. And then they chose it as a wedding song. So then all of a sudden, like, this song is not so much about Twilight anymore. And it's like the song that everybody's walking down the aisle to, everybody's doing their first dance to, and I'm like, well, that's really cool. So this like, song just keeps, like, living its own life and like, evolving. And so for, I don't know, for the next 10 years, everybody gets married to it. And what comes after marriage, but everybody starts having babies. It's funny is so did I. So I ended up getting married. I ended up having babies. And so I remember thinking, like, you know, I don't know if you guys relate, but like, when you become a mom, like, your whole world changes. Like, yeah, I kind of don't want to pretend that like, this didn't just happen. So how can I, like, marry sort of my, you know, my career with like, what I'm doing now and with motherhood? And so I just started singing lullabies. And I remember my record label was like, what? You know, like, you're making we're babies now. And I was like, just, just hang in there. And so I make a lullaby record for my, my first daughter Carmela. And. And then all of a sudden, because everyone got married to my music, they're having babies at the same time as me. Now they're playing my lullabies to all their kids. So all of a sudden I'm like this voice in their story, you know, and like some of the most amazing moments of their lives. And I'm so grateful and I'm so honored to be a part of this. And so honestly, it felt like the very, like, right next thing to do. And because it's a thousand years, so I made like a lullaby version of the song and everyone was like, loving that. And so I was like, well, what if, you know, we did like a picture book? Because that's what. That's my world. Like, I'm sitting and reading books now. I have also a two year old and so I'm reading books to her. And like, so it just was the most natural progression, I have to say. Like, it's just the gift that keeps on giving. Like, this song has its own life, but I'm just kind of There, like, hanging out for all of it and loving all of it, because I loved the twilight season. I love the wedding season. I'm obsessed with the motherhood season because it's my favorite part. And I just, like I said, I feel, like, really honored to be a voice in, like, this part of people's lives. And I feel like you don't even have to know the song, like, because I rewrote the book a little bit to make it its own thing. I also couldn't say I have died every day waiting for you, like, right. Even though I would because I'm so emo. But, like, you know, who are reading it, you know, they might not want to say that. So I changed the lyrics a little bit to make it, like, you know, kid friendly, because so many people said to me, like, hey, this feels like a love story between me and my child. And just listened. I was like, all right, let's go. And so that's what it is now. And I'm. I'm so excited.
Bri
I love that, you know, Love it. It really is incredible how this song has evolved. And, I mean, we're right there with you. I mean, big fans, like, started with Jar Hearts, and we played that through. I feel like all our first breakups, you know, Jar Hearts was that one. And then just, you know, Twilight. Big Twilight fan, too.
Nikki
I hard, too.
Bri
Yes. But, you know, your song did play at a lot of weddings we attended. Our cousins. It's their. Their married song. It was so wedding song. And then it's true. You are my sunshine. I feel like my kids. I mean, they've probably heard that a million times. Like, your lullabies were so beautiful. But it was awesome, like, as a mom, like, to be able to play Jar Hearts in the car and then for your kids playing your lullabies, I mean, like, that's it. That's motherhood. But I love hearing the process. And I have to say, when you started to do the children's book, because you are very artsy, do you instantly get the visuals of how you want the illustrations to look?
Christina Perry
Yeah. So what's interesting is Joy, my illustrator, it was so cool that she actually followed me on Instagram and knew Carmela when she was a baby, like, her from pictures of her. And so when she was sort of submitting to be the illustrator for this book, like, she drafted up pictures and was drawing basically my daughter. So, of course, like, I was like, oh, my God, this is perfect. But, like, she tells everyone, like, she was already a fan of me as a Mom and, like, the way that I would post and, like, and she knew that my daughter Carmela had a little bunny whose name is Bunon. And so, like, Bunon's in every page. And, like, it was so personal to me. And I think it makes such a difference that she knew me as a mom. Do you know what I mean? Like, so she was drawing the pictures, like, as me. And then, you know, the. The mom in the book is, like, not super skinny because I was not super skinny after I had my babies. And then she's like, has tattoos and is wearing jeans and a T shirt. Like, she's very older, Millennial. You know, it was like, very important to me to have that be the vibe. So I. That was sort of. My input was like, hey, I just want her to look really relatable. But at the same time, Joy was already nailing it, like I said, because she knew my family, and she. When she drew these p. My. My oldest was the. The age of the little girl in the book, so it was so perfect. Now I have another little one who is two, and she thinks that that's her in the book. So whenever I show the book, she's like, it's Pixie. It's Pixie. And I'm like, yeah, yeah, and Carmela, but, yeah, also Pixie. So, like, it looks just like my girls. So I feel like it's so authentically my story and. And me and them. And it's also hopefully, you know, relatable to. To all parents.
Nikki
I love that. And it so will be. Well, you know, with Pixie. Do you think, like, with the success of this children's book, that you have another song that you can make into a children's book where I can represent Pixie? Yeah.
Christina Perry
Yeah. I've got some ideas up my sleeve. I. I think this is such, like, a sweet spot for me because. And I don't know if you guys can relate to this, but, like, you know, when I'm asked to be Christina Perry the pop artist, like, that's amazing and wonderful, and I show up and do that. But when I'm asked to be, like, Christina Perry the mom, like, it. There's just, like, a different energy and, like, I feel so. Just, like, joyful to do it. And so I have, like, Christmas lullabies that I did that I think would be a great book. I have, you know, my other daughter to. To absolutely make a book about, because we know when she gets older, she's going to be like, yo, this is. You know, she doesn't Notice quite yet. So, yes, I absolutely hope that this is, like, a world that I'm entering, that I get to kind of stay in for a while and. Because I'm just so genuinely happy to be there and, like, actually reading books to my kid at night. You know what I mean? Like, this is my moment of, like, genuinely being in the exact same space. So I. Yeah, I hope I get to keep doing it.
Nikki
I love it. And I love it because you can hear your passion about it. And it's so true, because as moms, like, I. I totally. You are like these two different people. I just think of the way I even dress when I'm in mom mode. It's just so different than when I'm in Nikki mode and I'm out doing something. I wish being a pop star, that'd be, like, the coolest thing ever to perform on a stage, but I guess beating up people on a stage or body slamming them as pretty sure that's cooler. Yeah. Which is amazing. What was funny, because I just gave a speech to a bunch of surgeons this past weekend, and they opened up with me doing, like, entering the ring, and I came out and I was in, like, a business suit because, you know, I knew I was talking to surgeons and I was like, well, I think I might have wore the wrong outfit today.
Christina Perry
You just rip off the suit underneath. Yeah.
Nikki
I know.
Bri
Yeah.
Nikki
One day I have to wear it for Mateo. But I love, like, that feel because I feel like so many women nowadays relate to that. And I think, I love that, that we get to have these two different sides of us.
Christina Perry
Sure. Well, we definitely have to show that we can do it all. Right. Because so much of the, the, the past has been, how do we do it all? How do you balance it all? How? You know, it's like, not like a, hey, look at me doing it.
Nikki
Totally.
Christina Perry
I think it's awesome that we do show. Show all of it.
Nikki
I agree. And so how do you. Because we get asked this a lot, like, how do you do our own. How do you balance it? Like, how? I mean, you do so many things.
Christina Perry
I don't know. Honestly, I'm exhausted. Aren't you guys?
Nikki
Oh, beyond, beyond.
Christina Perry
No, I feel like the truth is, like, we just figure it out, you know, and, and, and honestly, I can't even take all the credit because when I'm working, I have help. I. I honestly don't know. My mom worked full time. She was a hairdresser. My dad's a barber. Like, they did not have a ton of help. So I don't know how they did such a good job. I feel so lucky that I get to have a babysitter sometimes. I have two. I'll have one for my older one and one for my younger one because my husband works, so we're both working. And, yeah, so I can't take all the credit, but I do think, mentally, you never turn it off. Like, that's what's so crazy to me is, like, the mom mental load is like, that's the stuff I relate to, like, online. Like, all the memes and stuff. Like, with Christmas, it's like, oh, my God, when Christmas was over, I was like, out. I'm like, I need for sure. Like, I brought the Christmas magic, you know? And, like, also worked. And also, you know, like, so it's kind of. We're kind of amazing is basically what I'm saying. Like, and so when people ask me the same thing, like, how do you do it? The truth is, I don't know. I. I don't have a choice. I, like, love working. I love being a mom. I'm just gonna figure out a way to do it. And, you know, some days it's really hard. I had to cancel my whole day yesterday because my daughter was throwing up the night before. And so I was like, I can't be a zombie doing podcasts. Like, I didn't want to bring that vibe, you know? And, like, so that was a day I couldn't do it. Like, I literally had to reschedule my work yesterday, and everything's fine now, and here I am today. But, like, you know, that is actually. It's like, day to day. Like, that's what it looks like. I was laughing on Saturday night because I was singing. I got on stage and, like, sang with my brother and his band. And then at 10pm and at 11pm I was literally catching barf, like, from my kid.
Bri
And I was like, that sounds about right.
Christina Perry
I was like, oh, my God, this is the humbling, like, most ridiculous experience of my whole life. And also, like, wouldn't change a thing. Like, I'm obsessed.
Bri
Wouldn't change a thing.
Christina Perry
Like, I'm obsessed with them. And so, you know, it's like, it feels so right at the same time that it's just. It's just challenging and it's hard. And it's also the best, I think, all. All the things all at once.
Bri
Oh, gosh. I agree. And I feel like, to our kids, because. And it sounds like you're a lot like, how Nikki and are Nikki and I Are. But like, our. Our kids understand us. Like, they see, like, mommy works, and I feel like they're so resilient to a little bit of the chaos that they kind of just. I don't know, like, my kids, like, just know, like, mommy has a business call and they'll go in the backyard and play. Well, like, they're so great. Like, they know how to keep themselves busy. And. Yeah, they'll even grab a snack. And I'm like, damn. Yes.
Christina Perry
Yeah, good. Good for you. Love that they're also Italian. That's what we do, right? Honestly, little kids, you know, taught, you.
Nikki
Know, I love it. Well, you know, speaking, being all, well, we're family's Italian from Philly, which we feel like we're Italians.
Bri
We always act like we're half Italian.
Nikki
Philly.
Christina Perry
Yeah.
Nikki
My son, you know, now as being super bowl champs, he has sang, he now knows by heart the Eagles fight song.
Bri
You're.
Nikki
Do your girls know this?
Christina Perry
What? Just a g. Yeah, of course. Chanting it the whole day.
Bri
Yeah. Super Bowl.
Christina Perry
We're all wearing Eagles gear. We even had green freckles on our face.
Nikki
Oh, my gosh. I love it.
Bri
Wait, green freckles? I never even thought of doing that.
Nikki
Freckles is cute. Can you make a children's book of this? I think the Eagles fight song is a children's book, but with your vibes would be so cute.
Christina Perry
Oh.
Bri
I mean, Philly fans are.
Christina Perry
I'm in. I'm so.
Nikki
Yeah, exactly.
Christina Perry
Sponsored by.
Nikki
I love it.
Bri
Oh, my gosh. I. It is cute. You know, this is what the things I love about, like, traditions and stuff, and I feel like Italians are great at it, and I feel like people from Philly are even better.
Christina Perry
Yeah.
Bri
But being able to watch the Eagles with my kids and they know, they always are like, mom, you. It's when you're so loud, like, you'll yell at the screen and all this, and I'm like, what is it that. What do the Eagles do to us that makes us so crazy?
Christina Perry
I know.
Nikki
I know, my son. Towards the end of the game, because, I mean, who would have thought, besides us, that we would have scored so many points? But towards the end, he was like, no more Eagles. No more fight song. He was like, so what did you tell him?
Bri
It's not our fault. We had to sing it so many times against the Chiefs that I had.
Nikki
To take him inside.
Christina Perry
It totally worked. My daughter was walking around going, we winned. We win. Oh, my God, a T shirt. It was so. Oh, it was so cute.
Bri
I asked oh, my gosh. What do you miss about Philadelphia?
Christina Perry
What do I miss? Yeah, the people. I mean, that's the whole thing. Like, I. I feel like. I mean, when I talk to my family, everyone has the Philly accent. It's so funny. Like, I don't know how. I don't have it that bad. Like, I say water, like, when I. Like, there's some things that come out, and people are like, where are you from? But I feel like, because I was a singer, and I was always in all these, like, choirs and, like, had to sing in Latin, and, like, I just feel like somehow I, like, lost the. You know, down the shore with my potato salad, and so I don't talk like that totally. But I think when I'm home, it comes out more. And so I miss my family, my friends. But I go home often. Like, my best friends are there. I'm in my best friend's wedding in March. Like, I'll be there. And so the whole town absolutely love it. And I go as often as I can, and they're so nice to me. I feel like Philly, like, if you mess with them, they will tear you down and throw things at you and hate you for forever. But if they love you, you know, they're just so sweet, and they knew that, you know, I'm Philly through and through. And so whenever I come through any show I ever had, like, I got to play the. The Phillies baseball stadium and open for Billy Joel, and it was like, you know, Billy Joel doesn't need an opener, you know, like. But I was there wearing, like, a custom Phillies jacket, and, like, they were just like, yes, because, like, they. They. They feel, like, a sense of pride about me and my career, you know, Like, I'm their girl. One year, I was number two to. To Bradley Cooper of favorite Philadelphia, and I was like, yeah. Yes, I know. So I just love. I love the people.
Bri
Yeah, we. I mean, they should add you part of Super Bowl.
Christina Perry
I know, right? One day.
Nikki
Well, next year.
Bri
Next year. You know, it.
Christina Perry
We let them know. Let them know.
Nikki
We are.
Bri
We for sure are.
Nikki
I love it.
Bri
I know. I do, too. You know, it's actually funny because, Nikki, when you went and saw Christina when you were playing with James Blunt, you were.
Nikki
It was San Diego at the Bay. I don't know.
Christina Perry
I remember. Of course I do.
Nikki
And I went by my.
Christina Perry
I was wearing a little sparkly jacket with shoulder pads. I.
Nikki
It was so the best venue. And you looked gorgeous and crushed, and it was the one concert that I've ever Been to by myself. I was like, I'm gonna go. And I remember sitting there, and people were like, nikki Bella, you're. Who are you here with? And I was like, I'm here by myself. I really want to see Christina, and I want him. I know best.
Christina Perry
Oh, thank you.
Nikki
I know. Yeah. So that was. I loved. I mean, that. By the way, that venue served sushi and nice wine.
Bri
Humphreys by the Bay.
Christina Perry
By the Bay. I remember that place.
Bri
Was it.
Christina Perry
Dude. We also. I remember the backstage. We all had our own, like, little hotel rooms, too. Like, I really. And crew. Yeah, we had a blast. We had these, like, huge fruit platters. Like, they really took care of us. And we were the opener. So, like, you. You notice when they do that, you know? And, yeah, I still remember that show. That was awesome.
Nikki
That was such a good show.
Bri
And how was it taking it all the way back to when Jar Hearts hit it big? What was that feeling like?
Christina Perry
Oh, my God, it was insane. I mean, I feel like you might love this story. I should. So Jar of Hearts, I wrote, like, actually about a guy from Philly. Like, I call him Jar. I never really, like, talk about, like, exactly who he is, but everyone knows who he is, who knows me, so. And he knows, you know, but he loves it, which says a lot about him.
Bri
Yeah.
Christina Perry
Loves being Mr. Jarv. Hearts. But the first time I actually played it was the James Blunt tour, and I played my first show in Philadelphia. It was at the Tower Theater, and it was my first, like, official, big hometown show. And there's so many funny things that happened that night because my family's so big in Italian that, like, they took up every seat in the. In the theater. And then they all got up after I played and left to, like, come say hi to me. And James Blunt's manager was like, what the heck? Like, they have to come back, like, because all of a sudden, the whole audience left. I was like, I'm so. My family's so big. I'd 80 Perry's like, on the. The guest list. And.
Bri
And, oh, my God.
Christina Perry
Was like, I'm sorry. What? You need 80 comps? And so it was like, everyone. Oh, I know. Believe me, I had, like, a code. But everyone had to, like. Like, I had to rent a venue. I think it was, like, a restaurant next door, because they couldn't even put all the Perry's in the venue because it was so small. Anyway, so I'm on stage, and I'm telling you this story because I feel like it says it all about, what, 2010 was like, for me. And so there I am. I'm. I'm doing my first show. I'm like, you know, looking at everyone in the audience that I know, like, from like kindergarten. And. And so all of a sudden I play all my songs and then the last song I'm playing Jar of Hearts, and I. And I go and tell the story. I'm like, this song. I don't know if I can curse on here, but I was like, this song is about an asshole. And. And everyone laughs and, you know, claps or whatever. They know I'm about to play. And as soon as I said that, it's like he found the light. Like he had been in the audience. And then he just like, stepped over into light and I could like, see him. Like, I made eye contact with this guy, cheated on me, and like, you know, everything. The song's about, gosh, and who also, by the way, we love now. Because I wouldn't have this song if he didn't do that. So anyway, thank you, but we're grateful for it. Yeah.
Nikki
Thank you for being.
Christina Perry
And so I'm like. All of a sudden I see him and I'm like, oh, my God. And so I'm like telling a story, like, not about him, but about, like, writing the song and my, you know, my parents house in Philadelphia. I kind of make it about Philly and then. But I'm looking right at him and I think to myself, I'm like, this is gonna be the best f you I ever said in my whole life. I stared him right in the eyes and I sang Jar of Hearts right to him. And it was the best feeling I ever had. And then, honestly, like, he disappeared. He didn't come to the after party. I was like, yeah, you love it. And then. And so the rest of my career was like, a lot of that. I feel like it was like, angsty. Like, I kept dating all the wrong guys. I kept writing songs about it. It was phenomenal. And then I did meet, like, the love of my life and got married and had babies and everything is good now, which is wild.
Bri
Wild.
Christina Perry
That decade was. Was fierce and amazing. And I feel so lucky to have been, like, the voice of, like, so many strong women who were like, you don't get to get me back.
Bri
Right. And you were, you were that.
Nikki
That's why I showed up by myself. I was like, I love that. Yeah, I felt it so much. And that. That story gives me full body chills. There's nothing. I can't even imagine having that kind of moment of, like, writing a song and then being able to perform it on stage as they're just sitting.
Bri
And then it becomes a huge hit. I mean, the biggest fu you could ever do.
Christina Perry
That's exactly it. I felt so, so cool.
Bri
Yeah. Wow, Christina. And then now here you are touching. Gonna touch all these parents hearts and little kids with your book. We're just. We're so excited one to read it to our kids. We. Every night. I mean, sometimes I'm like, damn, do I ever get a moment to myself? Because it's like the library up in my house. I'm, like, singing songs, I'm reading books. But I love it, and so I'm so excited to add it to our collection.
Nikki
Definitely.
Christina Perry
Thank you so much.
Bri
And then before. Sorry, My voice, I was like, I know over here. I'm, like, getting over a little cold.
Nikki
So we always like to leave our listeners with a little bit of inspiration, affirmation. Do you have any quotes or mantras that you live by that you'd like to share? Oh.
Christina Perry
Yes. I feel like, oh, let me see. Let me see. So many. I mean, how do I know?
Nikki
And when you put someone on the spot, it's like, wait, no, no, it's okay. I know it. Until.
Christina Perry
Yeah, no, there's this really sweet quote that I kind of feel like has been floating around in my head for the past year, and it's. You are loved. You are. No, you are loving. You are loved. You are lovable.
Nikki
Oh, I love that.
Bri
I love that. Yeah, that's good.
Nikki
That's really good.
Bri
That's something great to put up on the mirror.
Christina Perry
Yeah, exactly. It's one of those.
Bri
That's a good mirror. One to every morning. For me to see that.
Nikki
That's really.
Christina Perry
We need that.
Bri
We do. Because when you feel like love is surrounding you and that you're filled with love, nothing negative. Nothing can, like, really damage your day, Right?
Nikki
Well, they say, I mean, you need to love yourself first before you can just give so much of your love away. You know, it just makes us better moms, better people, when we love ourselves so much first. So I think affirmations like that or a quote like that is so important, right? To tell yourself every day. Yeah, I try to do that.
Christina Perry
Yeah, me too. Also to try to treat ourselves like, lovingly, like we do our kids. Like, sometimes I get so. I'm so hard on myself, and then I think, like, wow, would I ever talk to my daughter like that? Like, no way. So, like, my inner monologue. I always try to be nicer to me, you know, like I am to them. Like, I would never say to anyone, really anyone, or out loud at all some of the things I say to myself in my head, you know?
Nikki
Totally.
Christina Perry
That's another one I try to do is like, you know, how would. How would I say this to my girls? And then I try to say to me like, that.
Bri
I know. And it's so hard because I agree. I'll look in the mirror and judge myself hard. And I would never do that to my daughter, you know?
Christina Perry
Yeah.
Nikki
And you would never want your daughter to hear it.
Bri
Right?
Christina Perry
Yeah, exactly. Right. So if it doesn't. If it's not kid approved, get out of here, you know?
Bri
