Yeah, it's so hard, but it's good. It's like the grind because so many people are doing the same thing. Or like, a hybrid of what you're doing. And so I'm not, like, a competitive person. I'm like. I'm very much like, we all have the same dream, we all have the same goal. Yep.

Everyone can have success.

[Kat Velasco]

Yeah. And everyone's success might look different, but it's just like.

I don't know.

I just feel like since we all have the same dream, don't tear each other down. That's kind of like how I am.

Sure.

But it is. Not everyone is that way.

How does, like, a week look like for you?

[Kat Velasco]

I know every week is different. I mean, I could have, like, I had an interview yesterday and photo shoot yesterday and then interview today, and then I have, like, a bunch of online stuff today. Like, I have to onboard someone on my team, and so that's going to be, like, on my computer. So the next week, I'm traveling and I have a photo shoot for my upcoming song. So it's like, it always looks different, which is like, something I love. Like, I love.

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

I cannot have predictable.

[Kat Velasco]

Yeah. Like, the same thing every single day would drive me insane.

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

Me too.

[Kat Velasco]

For sure. Like, it really would.

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

Yeah. We're not meant for that. You know, we're all artists in different ways.

[Kat Velasco]

Right.

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

And our soul just seeks something so much different. Yeah. You know, that's what makes us creative and fight for the things we want to.

Absolutely.

So growing up, when did you realize, like, oh, shit, I'm a really good singer, and this is, like, something I want to do.

[Kat Velasco]

I've been singing forever, I think My mom was a vocal major in college, but she had horrible stage fright. So she. She, like, put me and my brother, who's now a professional dancer. Like, he's like. Like a ballerina. Ballerine.

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

Oh, ballerina.

[Kat Velasco]

Would you say ballerina? Ballerina.

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

Ballerina.

[Kat Velasco]

Ballerina. He's. He's incredible. And he's actually going to Prague this summer and dancing. Like, he's so good. So she put both of us. Cause we both showed an interest in singing and dancing at a young age. And she was like, I don't want them to be nervous. Like, I want them to. So it worked out for the both of us, really. Um, but I Did pageants, which is, like, so not my personality. But I was in South Carolina. Like, what else was I gonna do to sing? Really? And, yeah, I kind of got burnt out for a little bit. And then during COVID I started writing, and that's where I think my confidence came in for. I was like, okay, I could do this, like, in some capacity. And then I made the move, and that was, like, the scariest thing I've ever done. Wow.

And were you by yourself? Do you have friends here or.

[Kat Velasco]

I didn't know anybody. Oh, my God. I moved downtown, and I was like, all right, let's give this thing a go. And, like, it was during the CMAs, and I just remember, like, stalking Instagram and, like, following, like, Kelsey Ballerini's makeup team, and, like, everybody. Like, I was just seeing who the photographers were and videographers and, like, just really grinding because I didn't know anybody. Wow. Yeah.

But that's incredible. I feel like it's good to have a humble start like that.

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

Yeah.

You know, gives you grit.

[Kat Velasco]

Yeah. I was, like, 8 years old in the car with my mom, and I distinctly remember being like, how did you live a normal life? Like, how did you not pursue singing? And she was like, I knew that I had, like, something on my hands. Like, there's something bigger there. Because she was like, I never really. She was like, I just wanted kids and, like, a life like that. And I was like, I just. I don't see my life that way.

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

I love that at 8, probably, like,

[Kat Velasco]

shouldn't be sitting in the front seat. You know what I mean? So, no, it was. Yeah, she was. She'll tell me that all the time. She was like, I remember that moment. And I was like, wow.

But that does say a lot, you know, especially that young, like, to feel that.

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

I've always felt that you are born with it. There's some things you can't teach.

[Kat Velasco]

Right.

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

But when it comes to being, having it, like, the charisma that wanting all that, like, you are born with. With that.

I agree.

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

You can't teach that.

I do agree with that.

Yeah. So you write something. Yeah.

You write a lot about heartbreak.

[Kat Velasco]

Yeah.

So is it all from personal and drunkenness and love? Yeah. Is it all from personal experience?

[Kat Velasco]

Crazy messy.

But we love it.

A lot of this entire cowgirl complex is all from. From me. I mean. Yeah, unfortunately.

So you're in Covid, and.

Yeah.

You know, like, all of us, everything stands still. So when you started to write during that time, did you just Start thinking of all the things. Like, did you go through a breakup during COVID Yeah.

[Kat Velasco]

I was like, I can't believe I'm still living in my hometown. I can't believe I'm, like, working in finance for my dad. Like, I. I just couldn't believe I was like, I'm gonna move to New York, and I'm either gonna do fashion or, like, something. Like, I was, like, always. I always just saw something bigger for me. Not that, like, there's anything wrong with that. I just had that moment where I was like, what is happening? I mean, I think all of us in covert were like, what is happening? But, like, sure. And I was journaling a lot at that point because I was going through a breakup. So I was like. It was, like, a really hard one to do. It was like, my first love breakup. That is hard. It was. It was rough. So I. That song just, like, came out, like, flowed out of me. And I. I took a while to show my parents because I knew that they were going to be like, all right, we're going to record this. Yeah. Because this has always been their dream for me, so they've been super supportive. I know.

Supportive parents change everything.

[Nikki]

They change everything.

You know what I mean?

[Kat Velasco]

It's crazy.

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

Yeah.

It's like, I'll call my dad, and he'll. He'll be like, I'll rant for, like, 15 minutes, and then he'll be like, just keep making good music. And I'll be like, is that all you have to say? But at the end of the day, it's, like, so calming. It's like, really? That's all I'm here to do is, like, keep making music and.

Yeah, well, and he knows what you need to hear.

[Kat Velasco]

Yeah.

Because he's your dad, so he knows, like, the right words to keep you motivated. And they. One, like, you said, the calming part. But also, like, I do feel like parents, like, you know, well, because they've been through it.

Like, you know, I mean, we're parents, so we know, too. Like, we've been through this crazy journey at life. So it's like when you see someone start to go through those beginning years of it, you're like, just make good music, because you're gonna come out so great. You know what I mean? Like, they know there's, like, someone out there for you. Probably won't meet them for a decade.

Yeah.

So. But, you know, so when you got more breakups and write good music.

When they listen to your songs, like are they ever like. I mean they're like is this personal like. Or like how do they know it?

[Host (Nikki or Brie)]

They. I'm sure they know it.

[Kat Velasco]

Yeah, they know and they're just like, they're just so proud. Yeah. I mean they've watched it evolve over time too. And from really, really trying to get to know people in the industry and like seeing some of like some of my songs or other people's songs that they wrote. So now just having like a full album of just all of my experience and some of it's not breakup. Some of it's like girl breakup, like girlfriend breakup stuff. Like yeah, there's a song on the album called Too Much and it's like about like me and one of my good girlfriends here like not being friends anymore and because I felt like I was like, too much for her and. But, like, you could interpret it as a breakup if, like, that's how you feel. You know what I mean? It's kind of just, like, up to your interpretation, but, like, majority of it is, like, all from just experience.

Yes.

You've grown such a strong audience online. How, like, what has been the craziest or coolest moment where you realize that people were really connecting to your music?

[Kat Velasco]

Oh, my gosh. There's so many. I mean, literally every time I put out a song or someone is, like, lip singing my song, like. Like the. Like, them knowing the words to my songs, I feel like, is just crazy.

Oh, my gosh.

[Kat Velasco]

Even playing a show and just seeing people singing mice. Like, it's just like the dream job. It's like the feeling. It's just like the warmest feeling ever of just like, wow, I wrote this, like, with one other person or, like, by myself, like on a porch swing or something. You know what I mean? And someone now knows the words and loves it. But, yeah, I feel like online is. It's been good for me. I mean, I feel like definitely my family's been like, come on, like, do you have to. My friends would say, I treat my Instagram story like how Snapchat you stories used to be. Like, how. It's just, like, really long. I would just, like, post everything. Yeah. Because I just want to be as authentic as I can and as honest as I am. And, I mean, probably shouldn't, like, post, like, where I live, you know.

Oh, yeah, let's not do that.

But other than that, it's like. Yeah, I just want to connect. I think that's it. I mean, when someone connects with a song or they tell me, like, this song helped them get through something, it's just all of it's. All of it is all about connection. Really is.

It's all about. It really is now the foundation.

Do you know, is it hard dating being so open? Because do you feel like guys are kind of scared of that?

I actually am in a relationship.

I feel like that was, like, the biggest moment for me so far. I mean, I'm putting out my first album as an independent artist, which is. Wow. It's kind of crazy. And I feel like I've lived. I feel like. Like, you guys. Like, I've lived a lot of lives.

Like, the pageant stuff. Like, I did, like, musical theater for a while, and there's just, like, so much that people be like, wait, really? Like, you did not. So Show Pony is really the turning point of, like, I'm no longer performing for other people's expectations. Like, I'm a western pop artist. Like, that's very different. I'm nothing like anyone that. That you see. Like, all of us are different, you know? And I really just, like, wanted to hone in on that and be like, I'm done being a show pony. Like, I'm done.
