So let's get started with a few questions. Did you guys ever believe when it was all said and done, so before these Comebacks, that like wrestling was ever over, like that was your ending chapter?

[Paige]

Did I ever think I was gonna come back?

[Nikki]

Yeah. But yes.

[A.J. Lee]

Oh, no. I think I was like kind of wrapped stuff up in such a perfect bow. It just Felt like I didn't want to tarnish that in a way. It felt like, so completed. I didn't feel like I had anything left to do. And then seeing how the business evolved, I kind of saw it, like, when you're a senior in high school and you graduate, you're like, I hope those freshmen have better teachers. Or, like, they get a field in the school that they can use. You don't expect it for you. And so it was just an extra wonderful surprise and a treat to be like, oh, I get to hang out with this new class. That's awesome.

[Nikki]

Yeah, totally.

[Paige]

Well, when it comes to myself, I never thought I would ever wrestle again. You know, I was at a stage where my neck was done, my career was done. Like, that was it for Paige. Right. So I never thought, eight years later, I'll be back in a WWE ring on a stage with you three ladies like, it was 10 years ago. Yeah. So, yeah, it's just. It's really special, especially because we all get to be together during this era too. But the new generation of women are so great. They're so intense in the ring. They wrestle their asses off, wrestle rings around me, I tell you that. But yeah, I just feel very fortunate that I get to be in the ring with this new generation. It's bonkers.

[Nikki]

Totally. Okay, so when you guys had your time off, I don't know if this ever happened to you guys, but when you would be working out or on the treadmill, would you always get like storylines in your head, even if you've been out of it for like three or four years? I'm like, okay, this is what I got right now. This is gonna be my finish. Like, it just never leaves, does it?

[A.J. Lee]

Yeah, it's always in you. I feel like it's the same part of the brain, like, just storytelling in general. It's like this muscle of an escapism kind of. But I also feel like I have like a weird Ruha ability where back in the day I would manifest storylines in my head. Like, I would just think of them and be like, oh, I'd love to do an in ring wedding. Or I'd love to do like a. Like, I'm the Stephanie, like, you know, manager, and I would always is come up with fantasy booking.

Yes.

And then, like, it would happen.

So I really believe in manifesting.

Well, obviously it feels different this time around, but how different does it feel making your comeback, coming, doing. You know, I don't know if you're going to come back again. We're going to try, but I would love to know.

This group is like the queen of comebacks, right? Whether we never.

We never fully retired. But Paige, I'm going to start with you. What was the feeling like coming back this time around?

[Paige]

Oh, man, it was magical. And you know, you just saying that. Who would have thought in the Divas era, us forward makes such an impact that we're able to come back 10 years later and everyone be happy to see us, you know. So, yeah, it's, It's. It's incredible. But being backstage and then, you know, with everything's so new. The locker room so fresh. Like, there's so many new faces, but everyone is so nice. Like, everyone is so sweet, right? All the girls are so welcoming. And then they all end up telling us like, oh, I watched you in total divas. I watched you guys, you know, the frenemies thing, and it's just. It's really cool. You're like, wow, I even made an impact on the girls behind the scenes. It's just. It's really cool, you guys.

[Brie]

Yeah, it's really cool.

It is fun.

So this time around, like, how did it feel different?

[A.J. Lee]

Well, I feel like, especially like back in the day, there was a lot of like, trauma. Like every time I see Natty backstage, we're like, haha. Remember the good old days?

Oh yeah.

And we hide under a table and like, remember Vietnam. But so to come back out, I think we had like our guards up and we were a little nervous, but it's. Everyone is so welcoming and supportive and it's quite genuine and really wholesome where, like, the thing that I miss when I'm not there is like, I miss the girls. What are the girls doing?

[Brie]

Like, for sure.

[Nikki]

So true. How about you, Bri?

[Brie]

I mean, I would.

I mean, you made a recent come.

[Brie]

Yeah, I feel the same. The one thing that tripped me out is it's all the same production people.

Everyone's no, like, it's everyone's the same. I'm like, Brian from lighting. I'm like, oh my God.

But yeah, you know, Jen, Free catering, right? Where are the Red Bulls?

[Brie]

It's wild, right? But I feel like for me, like when I came back this time, it felt like Groundhog Day, which tripped me out. Like the same like schedule and like things going on. But I think cause I'm older, I looked at it differently. Like I wasn't as stressed out, didn't have the anxiety. I was like, almost like, why didn't I breathe more back in the day? Or you know what I mean?

[A.J. Lee]

Yes.

Maybe I'm more confident. I'm in my 40s. Maybe I feel more confident, right?

[Nikki]

She's in her I don't give a shit era.

[Brie]

I don't give a shit a. So that happens. You know what I mean? But yeah, I definitely, I feel like I have more confidence this time and I guess I feel like so blessed and it's an honor to be there that I'm just like, you know, let's have some fun. Because I know it's not going to be for a long time.

Yeah, I, you know, I was shocked first about how blown up I was.

Oh, hell yeah, girl.

I was like, whoa, where's she at now? Oh shoot, here I am. And your body would be like sticking to your lip.

You're like, is there any water in

my abs are sticking to my ribs.

At one point I was like, the dry mouth. The dry mouth. The first match back is real nerves.

[Nikki]

And it's like weird nerves. Because when you're doing like live events all the time for five, eight years straight, then you take so much time off. I'm just like, how am I reacting to things? Or you know, you go out there when you're doing it non stop. But that got me the most like in the beginning. And then I got compelled, comfortable and I felt great. I love both eras so much. There's truly something very special about the Divas era. And I think because there was a lot of fight and grit and like, stuff was so unpredictable. And I realized that I really thrive on that kind of stuff in life. I mean, I'm not gonna go bungee jump or anything like that, but there's something about that that's just so unknown and you don't know what takes to. And you have to react and feel. But then these women, I mean, they're athletes, they are just incredible. And it's been so fun. But you know what's funny is I feel like breaking My ankle. Well, breaking, tearing, spraining my ankle. This time around, I feel more confident to come back than I did before. But I was in a weird place too. Divorces do that. Anyone divorce you guys?

They're like, hell yeah, we know.

But I feel like this time around, when I come back, I'm gonna be way more confident than a year ago.

You're kind of like, oh, that felt the same. Like, what was.

Was really, I think, getting to enjoy it for kind of the first time. I think, like, when you're younger, and I think age has a lot to do with it, you just feel a little bit more like you're fighting for your life and everything is like, oh, I'm gonna, you know, I don't wanna live on the street again, like. And so you just, like, you're fighting to prove yourself, and then now where, like, I'm, you know, about to be 40, like, I know who I am and I know what I've done. And the people around you lift you up and they're, like, just so supportive of that that I could, like, sit back and enjoy it. And so I got to, like, see wrestling with brand new eyes almost.

Yeah.

[A.J. Lee]

And I was, like, seeing it through the eyes of, like, my wrestling children.

[Nikki]

Honestly, it's crazy, right?

[A.J. Lee]

And, like, they just, like, they love it so much. And so I loved it because they loved it and just got to, like, you know, train with, like, with Pam and with Aoife and Carla, and they're just like, such superstars. And like, that felt like I got to see wrestling like a fan again. And I hadn't felt that way in, like, I don't know, 15 years or something. So that was, like, the most, like,

heartwarming thing I did.

[Brie]

And then, Paige, for you, when you got that phone call saying, can you get booted up in five days to breathe?

[Nikki]

I mean, Breeze Cagney. That was nuts.

Yeah. What was that phone call like for you?

It was crazy because it was Hunter, Triple H calling me. And we're already in talks about potentially doing something maybe, but it was very last second where they're like, can you come to Mania and take Nikki's place for a second? You know? And I'm like, sure. So, like, I end up seeing you in Alabama or wherever we get.

[A.J. Lee]

I know.

We were like two ships passing in the night.

In Alabama, which was so backstory, if

you guys don't know. Paige literally was getting cleared. We were checking her to get cleared.

Cause I'm gonna be doing my podcast and signings and all that kind of stuff, so I don't think it will look too strange if I'm around, you know? But everyone was kind of guessing. Yeah, everyone was just like, oh, Nikki's her. The only person that could potentially replace her would be Paige. Right. So people were starting to guess. And then the day of Mania, I was supposed to go do a signing, and then the last second, they pulled the signing and got me to go to Mania. And I was like, well, that gives it away then, because I had to cancel the signing. But, yeah, and it also. We got so frustrated, you guys, because it leaked the day before.

Yeah, I'm still gonna find that stooge.

I know. I was like, we can't have surprises anymore. Like, it was the most frustrating thing ever. And we were just like, okay, well, we'll just make the most of it. People are kind of guessing that I'm gonna be there anyway, but the reaction was just bonkers. Dude. I get chills thinking about it. It was just. And I love that I got to do it with you guys and hopefully get to do it with you soon.

When you did your comeback, did you feel like you had to prove something to not only your fan base, to WWE Universe, to yourself? Like, did it feel harder for you on training and, like, what you wanted to get out of the comeback?

[A.J. Lee]

Oh, that's a good question. I almost felt like I was doing it specifically for my fan base. Like, for 10 years was like, just like, show up in the crowd. Just do any. Like, just pop up. So I felt like I just wanted to give them, like, the classics and, like, kind of like do fan service in that way. And then once I started getting rolling, I was like, wait, can I. Can I do this? Like, am I.

[Paige]

Can I physically?

[A.J. Lee]

And it is a rough transition. Like, if you have ever wrestled, like, there's quite a difference from doing, like, five minute matches. And like, I think I had a 30 minute match the first time I came back, and I was like, oh, my Legs don't work like this. They're concrete. How am I supposed to. Oh, 20 minutes left.

[Brie]

Cool.

[A.J. Lee]

Like, that was the biggest. After the, after Wrestlepalooza, I was like, oh, this is way harder than I thought it was going to be. And then I was like, okay, let me really buckle down and like prove it to myself that I can still be an athlete that way.

I was very lucky where the fans were like, whatever, if you just want to skip, we'll be here for you.

[Nikki]

I had a really great dance party

and pay was for you because everything was such a last minute for you. And granted, you were at aew, you had your run there, but you were still kind of out of it at the time. You got the phone call after you had your first match back. What was going through your head after, like, what you need to do to just kind of like get your ass in shape.

Well, I did go to AEW and you guys, I did have a great time there, but my heart wasn't in it. And I feel like you could see that in my performance when I was in the ring day and my character there. And it was just like, I'm a WWE girl, man. Like, I love wwe. And so, yeah, like, I went there for a couple of years and you know, we, we went our separate ways and it was like, it ended really, really great. And like, I have nothing but love when it comes Tony and stuff like that. But yeah, when it comes to wwe, like, that's just where I've wanted to be forever. Like I, I had been there since I was 18 years old. I gave my neck for this company, you know, like, I grew up here, you guys, like, right? You know, you did. I was a baby.

[Nikki]

Like, you were such a baby, you know.

[Paige]

Yeah. So. And then when it comes to getting the call and being. I was so excited, but I didn't have any preparation time for the match at all. No, like it was Monday and then I had stuff like my, my manager said he was like, oh, we've got stuff Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. And then we have the mania on Saturday. I didn't have any time to get in the ring and then we did have rehearsals, but it was like I was just coming in at the end of the match. So I was like, well, thank gosh, I don't have to do too much. But then obviously we end up winning the Tag Team championship because we're badasses. That's right.

[Nikki]

That was up and you rocked it too.

[Brie]

You did. I mean, girl, it's in your blood. You were born in the business.

[Paige]

I was born. I come out my mom right now.

[Brie]

Your mom's like, fucking triangle choke.

Like, I got up there, and I'm

like, no, I'm gonna break my ankle again.

And I'm like, if I re. Break my ankle right, I'm gonna be so.

Now I gotta manifest for one, I gotta write for the other. But I love that you took your own superpower and then you made it into superheroes and comic books. How was that transition and what inspired you? I know. I feel like we all know that you loved comic books as you know, from a young kid, but what really inspired you to do that transition.

[A.J. Lee]

To me, it's, like, very much the same piece of my brain. Like, when I grew up, like, video games and comic books and pro wrestling, there were all these things I could escape into that could take me out of a bummy world and make me feel happy and safe, and I could feel strong. And it's all just heroes sort of being tested and then coming out on top at the end. It's very much the same kind of formula. And so to me, like, one art form I use my body in, and then one I use my brain, but it's the same kind of heart. So it was nice to be able to be like, okay, now I can gain 10 pounds of donuts and, like, just not have to worry about, like, my abs or, like, people looking at me, because I also deal with a lot of anxiety. And so sometimes being in, like, the public side is very draining and difficult. So it can be so nice to just like, I don't have to put a bra on today. I can work from home.

[Brie]

That's my life.

[Nikki]

Yeah.

[Brie]

I never put on a bra. You don't put a bra on and go to work.

[Nikki]

I work, bitch. I just don't put on a bra.

So I write some stuff separately, and then I write some stuff with a team. And if we're working on a project together, like, all of the film stuff that we've done has been as partners, and the comic books we've done has been together. And then we'll do, like, spec scripts separately. But we. I. I have to write in the morning, so it's like coffee. Four hours of writing, and then I'll work out, and then I'll go back to writing if I like. Yeah, it's hard to, like, both at the same time. Yeah, you kind of need to, like, one sacrifices the other. Like, the eight months I was on the road, I did not get to write at all. But right before I came back, I had just delivered my first animated movie.

[Brie]

for Toei Animation. So they make, like, Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z. Oh, my God.
