Hello everybody and welcome back to the official BNI B&I podcast. I'm Priscilla Rice and I'm coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. And I'm joined on the phone today by the founder and the Chief visionary officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Meisner. Hello, Ivan, how are you and where are you?
Dr. Ivan Meisner
I am in Austin, Texas this week. I have some long term friends and B and I directors who are visiting Jodi and I here in Austin.
Priscilla Rice
Great.
Dr. Ivan Meisner
I also have a guest today. He is Spencer Reynolds. Spencer has been on the BNI podcast before. Episode number 698, referral flow and Power Teams. He's been in BNI for nearly 18 years. He has successfully launched 50 50, that's five 0B&I chapters between Utah and Florida. And he now leads the largest single region in the USA, BNI, Tampa Bay. With over 58 chapters and nearly 1700 members, the Tampa Bay franchise has generated $124 million. And thank you for closed business in the last 12 months. Spencer's expertise is obviously in growth and, and technology and that's what he's going to be talking about today. AI and networking, using technology to deepen real relations. Welcome back to the BIA podcast, Spencer.
Spencer Reynolds
Glad to be here, Ivan.
Dr. Ivan Meisner
All right, so you've got several points. I'll let you run with them. The first one is about relation, it being a relationship tool. Yeah.
Spencer Reynolds
Well, first and foremost I think that we got to be clear that AI is here to stay. Right? This is not some fad. That was, it was a good thing and now we're going to move away from it. Like this is going to be around for a long time. So I think anybody who's in business and serious about it has got to start adopting that conversation of like, how can I use it and what can I use it for? So I want to really apply this to every BNI member to say, how can I use this to actually do something in my life? Because I think a lot of people have played with it, it can be fun, but it doesn't mean they've actually done something worthwhile with it yet. So I want to just apply and say how, what are some of the activities we do in BNI and how can we apply it? So first and foremost, obviously ChatGPT is the large one that everybody gets to hear about, but there are other models out there like Claude AI or gemini.google.com so you can use any AI model in place of whatever we're saying in ChatGPT if you don' like GPT or you like one of the other models like Meta, there's lots of them out there. But here's what I would say. First and foremost, one of the most important things that every BNI member must get really good at is having great effective one to ones. Would you not agree, Ivan?
Dr. Ivan Meisner
Absolutely. Effective one to ones are really important.
Spencer Reynolds
Yeah. And so how you prepare for that one to one. Sometimes we don't do much, we just show up and that's a, a real missed opportunity to really set us up for success inside of that. So we've taught for many, I don't know how many decades now, probably all of them of bni, that we really want to have our gains exchange where we talk about our goals and our accomplishments, our interests, our networks, our skills and having that prepared document that we share with each other. Here's something you may not know. Most of our models out there with AI and specifically Chat GPT right now is a multi model, meaning you can do different things with it, like upload documents, you can, you can talk to it with a voice, you can type in it like most people are used to. But did you know that you could take a PDF document or a Word document that somebody sent you, that is their gains profile and upload it to ChatGPT, then take yours and upload it to ChatGPT and then let it say, please analyze these two gains profiles and give me the top three things that we should talk about that we have in common. And now it gives you talking points and you can say, give me two questions to ask for each one of them. And now it's prepared you to have a relationship right off the bat based on your data and their data without having to spend all the time reading through it. Now, I'm not saying shortcut, don't, don't read through it, but when you can have something, analyze it really quickly and come back with, hey, both of you like to do X or Y or Z, these are things you may want to talk about. That's just one little tidbit to go that's a start to using AI.
Dr. Ivan Meisner
Yeah, I've just heard about being able to upload PDFs. So that's, that's. I haven't done it. I need to do it. Great suggestion.
Spencer Reynolds
Yeah. I'll tell you there, there are some fun things that I've, I'm a bleeding edge technologist and, and so I love uploading audio and video. Do you realize that you could take your weekly presentation, it'll create it for you. I've got some whole, some great things about that. But then you can actually record yourself giving your weekly presentation and upload it to Chat GPT and say, please give me feedback. And it will tell you exactly what you can do to make it better. Like a business coach, like a speech coach, like some amazing things just for yourself to get better at your weekly. So another one that I would.
Dr. Ivan Meisner
By the way, I've done something similar with that when asking Chat GPT for suggestions on a book tour. I've done lots of books, but it gave me a suggestion I'd never heard of by doing something similar, asking about, you know, how do you improve my book tour?
Spencer Reynolds
Oh, that's, that's great. So I, I've done one as well where I've actually recorded. Now you want to do this with permission of the other person. So to, to carry along in that one to one concept. Imagine you now are sitting down, you've got your questions ready to have a great conversation starter with your one to one member that you're going to be sitting down, have your meeting. And now I ask, before I start my meeting, would you mind if I hit my voice recorder and record our conversation, just the audio of it? Because I'm going to upload this and then it's going to give us an action plan of what we talked about in the action plan of the steps that we both agreed to take by the end of this conversation. Would you be okay with that? And people are like, oh yeah, that'd be fine. And then you get done and you upload it and say, make me a meeting summary and give me the action points. And you copy and paste, put it in an email and voila. You now have just taken a lot of work that could take many minutes of summarizing and thinking through and it just does it automatically in seconds.
Dr. Ivan Meisner
Yeah, I've had people do that with me and it's, it's very helpful. And in doing a summary and you don't have to spend time trying to catch everything they say or you don't have to go through and, you know, recording and write down everything. Yeah, it's good tool.
Spencer Reynolds
So have you used the audio feature yet, Ivan?
Dr. Ivan Meisner
I don't use it regularly, but I have used it. That's how I got that. That advice on a book tour.
Spencer Reynolds
Here's my favorite part. Any of these things that we're talking about, you can just use your voice to ask the same questions. And here's the key in AI for all of you who are starting, it's all about prompting. If you're not good at the prompts, you're not going to get great stuff out of it. So ask a question. Then when it gives you something back, prompt it back until you get what you want. I do that with my voice. Nine times out of 10 I have that little button on smartphone button on the side of my iPhone 16 that I can click and it's an action button. I actually have it do audio notes with ChatGPT immediately so I can ask it questions because I do. I ask questions throughout the day. My wife, she loves it because now I don't talk to her as much. I can talk like very a lot and never get stopped talking. So she's like, I'm glad that you have somebody to talk to and Chat GPT does a lot of that with me. I spend probably an hour or two every day while I'm driving or doing different things, coming up with ideas or saying what can you come up with? And it will give me incredible ideas to do. And then I say, remind me of that one, right? I want to do this. Keep this in your memory. And then I go back and I look it up and copy and paste it. I don't write emails anymore. I do it all through Chat GPT. It writes the email for me. So saving you time on the end of the activities you're already doing. That's one of the main uses I would use ChatGPT for. So setting up for a great one to one recapping for your one to one of what it is that you've agreed to do. Great, great opportunities for using AI. You ready for another one, Ivan?
Dr. Ivan Meisner
Yeah. Is next one personalized engagement. Yeah.
Spencer Reynolds
Because when you can personalize this engagement, right. You actually have the opportunity to take this into so many activities that we do and be not. I'm going to take it into personalizing it for your weekly presentation. Now. I was doing an advanced training in one of our chapters and somebody asked me a question. How can I use AI to make a better weekly presentation? I said I'm so glad you asked. And I did a live sequence. I actually pushed the button on the phone and I Asked, do you know this company? And I said the company's name, and it got it wrong. And everybody laughed. I got it wrong. I said, okay, let's try again. And I tried again, and it got it wrong again. And the third time, it finally said yes. It knew the right law firm in the city and that the kind of law that they practice was personal injury law. I said, great, Now I'd like to weekly presentation based that for 30 seconds. What would you say for that? And it gives me a presentation, everybody. That was great. I said, actually, it wasn't. It sounded good, but what it didn't give was a specific ask. So then I prompted it again. Give us a specific ask and make it around a motorcycle accident or an injury around a motorcycle accident. And it gave it. And everybody's like, wow, that's amazing. I said, not yet. We still need to get a specific ask inside of that. I said, now I'd like a local motorcycle shop in the Clearwater area in Florida that. That would be the person that I could reach out to give me the name of that. And it came back with the name of the motorcycle. And it actually said, Harley Davidson of Clearwater. And it was amazing. The whole room just sat there and looked at me with these stunned eyes. And a girl on the other side, she goes, and that's real because that guy is my friend and I know him. Oh.
Dr. Ivan Meisner
And I said, yes, we just did.
Spencer Reynolds
We just generated a referral within about four minutes from asking questions to Chat GPT. And people were like, what? This is incredible.
Dr. Ivan Meisner
It is amazing that you can literally have a conversation with ChatGPT and it'll give you information. Sometimes it gives you misinformation, so you have to be careful. But it. It is really good at giving information that then enables you to, you know, do referrals. Or in one case, I needed it to help me produce a survey. And so you just. You ask it questions.
Spencer Reynolds
And you're right.
Dr. Ivan Meisner
You got to dig deeper. So, you know, if you don't have everything, then. Then ask, you know, for a little more information, more specific information.
Spencer Reynolds
Yeah, I probably asked six or eight questions just to get to where it got to. And then people were amazed. Here's the fun part is I took. I said, you guys want to see one step further? Now this goes into advanced AI crazy. But I said, can you now take this? And there happened to be a Friday morning, a Friday afternoon chapter. I said, take this and make me a spreadsheet. With the first column being every Friday starting next week for the next 52 weeks. Then next to that, I want to have another column that is our LCD, like the motorcycle injury. Give me the 52 most common LCDs. And it gave me all those. And then it gave me the person to ask for, and it made the whole thing. And I said, now make it. Make it a downloadable spreadsheet.
Dr. Ivan Meisner
And you've got so much more content. And I want you to finish up on this. But I've never done this. I'm doing it twice in a row. Would you like to come back next week and finish the content that you've got on this, Finish your thought about that spreadsheet, then finish the rest of the information, and we'll do. We'll do a part two of AI and networking.
Spencer Reynolds
Yeah. So that I would love to. Yeah, the way that ended was very simple. I said, now put, you know, each one of these columns. So I want this one to be the dates of the Fridays going forward. Here's my lcd, here's my specific ask of who I'm looking for, and then give me the words for my actual presentation so that I'm prepared and ready and can practice it every week. And it literally generated a spreadsheet with 52 weeks. And everybody sat there scratching their head going, you've got to be kidding me. It can actually do this. I'm like, now you've got to go through and make sure that those make sense. And the best way to do that would be do this yourself and do it on your own ChatGPT account so it knows it's you and prompt it through.
Dr. Ivan Meisner
We have to pick this up next week, Spencer. We're about out of time, but let's continue this dialogue about the spreadsheet. I love it. Okay. All right, Priscilla, over to you.
