I assume that you don't just want to feel inspired. I assume you're here because you want to change your life for the better. Maybe you got tired of starting over and over again. Or maybe you got tired of feeling discouraged because you had to. Maybe you got tired of knowing what to do, but you couldn't figure out how to motivate yourself to actually do it. Maybe you're tired of watching other people build the kind of life or the kind of business you know in your heart you're capable of. Let me ask you a real question. What would happen if you actually committed in a bigger way, not dipped a toe in, not just tried really hard, not left it up to chance, but actually decided that this is the season you're gonna figure it out? Because that is exactly what this community is for. And if you want to get involved and learn even more than you already are, I want to tell you about the podcast membership. The membership community is for people who love a deeper dive. Every single month, I teach a class on one of the most impactful topics we talk about here on the show. These are things that actually move the needle and that the audience responds to most. So things like how to set a goal that you will actually follow through on, or how to build systems so your life doesn't fall apart every single time you get busy. Or how to create habits that stick because they're designed for your real life, not some fantasy version of you. Today I'm going to share a teaser from this month's premium class. It's about 20 minutes long and it should give you a good idea of what to expect. But know that inside of the membership community, this podcast exists in both audio and video. So it's like a full on class. And like I said, you get the worksheet so you can follow along with me in real time. There's also a great community behind the scenes who's asking questions and commenting on each month's episode. And you get the entire back catalog. So for $10 a month you get all of the deep dives I've done so far, plus every single episode of the show absolutely ad free. And as a bonus, you get first access to any live events that we throw. Our Last Rise event sold out in a couple of weeks, but as a member of the community, you would have had access to that before anybody else. So if that sounds interesting to you, or you feel a tug that your intuition thinks it's time to go deeper, or you just want to check it out, here is an excerpt from this month's class. So using the information that you got in January's episode, I would love for you to take a few minutes and do the Wheel of Life today. So let's look at where we were back in January and let's look at where we are now. You don't have to redo January's if you have it, great. If not, it doesn't matter. But look and see where you are today and best case scenario you can compare January to July and see have we improved in any areas? Have we potentially fallen back in any areas? Understand that your willingness to look at these things means that you are doing more for your goals and your life than 99% of people will ever do. If people actually work up to the place where they set a goal for themselves, they very rarely will look back and see how far they've come and make adjustments along the way. So just even if it makes you feel a little weird and you wish you had more improvement or you wish you hadn't fallen off track. Even if that's the case, understand that you are doing something really empowering right now by having the courage to look. So take a quick minute and do your Wheel of Life for where you are today. Looking at those two wheels, hopefully you can see some improvement. Hopefully you see that you have come forward in a few areas and at the very least I hope that your tire sort of got more even. I always like to use the analogy. Imagine that this was a tire on your car. Imagine this was a wheel on your wagon. And if it's sort of like jagged and crazy, it's not going to get you very far. But even if you improved all the areas in your wheel. Like, even if you. Let's show it like this. Imagine that, like, back in January, I was here in my health and here in my family and here in my spirituality and here in my work, you know, and then here in my wealth. Right. Imagine that if I fill all of these in, this is gonna look crazy. You guys always love when I do my arts and crafts inside of our episodes. You know, I love to draw, even if no one asked me to. I don't know. It feels like school. I like when someone does a visual aid. I'm a visual learner, though, so if you're not. Sorry. Not sorry. So maybe this was my wheel back in January. Maybe, like, wealth was crushing it. Health was terrible. Family was awesome. These two are kind of. But what people tend to do is they will look at the areas that they're excelling and they will pour more gasoline on that fire because that makes them feel better. This is a thing, you know, how to do. Like, when I was a young mother, I would put so much energy and effort into work because I was really good at work. And being a young mother was so hard. I had two little boys. They were 20 months apart. I was so overwhelmed by it, but, like, I could go to the office and crush it. You know what I mean? So I would probably spend way too much time. I became a workaholic because that felt easy for me, and this thing felt hard. And what people will do is keep investing in the thing that feels easier. Meanwhile, the thing that feels hard gets less and less and less. So the goal with your wheel, if you're looking at it, January versus today, is not that it's, like, perfect and everything is completely even, but hopefully that some of it evened out. Right? Because if your wheel. If your wheel gets a little bit more even, it's going to be easier for you to drive your life forward. But if this is all, like, jacked and crazy, you're not going to get very far. Who cares if you're wealthier than Midas, but your health is in the toilet. Who cares if you are crushing it at work, but you have no relationship with your kids? Look, if that is the kind of guidance that you want, I am not the bestie, coach, friend for you. I don't believe that having one thing without the other is a healthy way to live. There are so many people, particularly in the entrepreneurial space, who will show you how to make more money and how to work really hard and how to crush it. And, you know, I've gone from four followers on social to 10 million followers on social. It's only requires that you do 400 pieces of content every month. Meanwhile, they might be crushing it and they might have all the money in the world and their businesses keep growing and like, you know, some of the people I'm talking about, but I look at their actual lives and I would rather be poor. I would. I would rather have no money and have my family and live a good life. And every once in a while we get to, you know, grill some hot dogs and hamburgers and put our face up in the sun and, you know, maybe people roll their eyes at that, but, like, I would rather have a higher quality of life than a life where you fly around in private jets and you just keep chasing more and more money. Respectfully, there is a reason why those people just keep making more and more money. Why they are trying to fill a void that cannot be filled by financial success. But they don't know what else to chase because they have nothing else going on in their life. So they just keep chasing this thing. Well, okay, I made a million. Now I gotta make 100 million. Now I gotta make 500 million. Now I gotta get to a billion. I promise you, they're gonna get to a billion and they still will not be fulfilled. Because fulfillment in life, it looks like a robust and full life. It doesn't mean that you are, like, crushing it only in one area. So it's important that you look at the wheel because you need to know what's going on. How are you doing compared to six months ago? And if you didn't do this exercise with us six months ago, don't worry about it. You can just pause this video for a minute, use a page in the worksheet to journal, and just ask yourself some questions. You know, how did I do? How's it going? How did I feel back in January? Is it better? Is it worse? Oftentimes, if I am trying to journal to get some information about a past experience. Sounds kind of weird, but I will go in the photos on my phone and I will just remind myself what was happening in January. Oh, yeah, we went on that trip and oh yeah, you know, the kids did this, this and this. It will help me to remember what was my state of mind for back then. The other thing that I do is I journal every single day. This episode is brought to you by Peacock and the new original series, the Five Star Weekend. Jennifer Garner stars as Hollis Shaw, a famed cook who invites her best friends to Nantucket after a devastating loss. Changes her life based on the best selling novel by Ellen Hildebrand. I am a recovering people pleaser. I spent most of my childhood learning that in order to be loved, I needed to make sure everybody liked me. And for some of us who have childhoods rooted in trauma, it goes way deeper than just being nice or just being kind or just being a good girl. And it becomes about this feeling of safety that is something I really had to learn to unlearn. And I can't imagine navigating my adult life, especially in the last 15 years, without the help of a therapist to guide me through that process. I remember going to therapy probably 10 or 15 years ago and thinking I was there to talk about stress or anxiety. But when we really uncovered the root cause of the stress and anxiety, it was about feeling like my in laws didn't like me. Sounds sort of frivolous and ridiculous, but for a lot of people that kind of thing can destroy our days. So I had to learn. And I really am so grateful for my therapist for guiding me through that process. If you have never considered all of the different ways that a therapist can help you navigate these sort of stigmas in your life, these things that you struggle with and don't really know a resolution for, you should check out BetterHelp. There is a reason that I have been partnered with them here on the show for years. BetterHelp is the number one online therapy. It's the world's largest therapy platform and you can find space to slow down and talk to someone who is just there for you. They have no idea or context about all the other people in your life. They're just helping you work through your stuff. You take a short questionnaire and it helps you to identify a therapist at BetterHelp that would work really well for you. And the great thing is if for some reason you try that therapist out and you don't totally dig them, that's cool, you can find another one really easily. Don't let stigma stand in the way of support. While the coffee's brewing, I just write two pages free form. Like what's going on in Life, how are things? It is so helpful to be able to look back a year ago, a month ago, and just see where I am. This is side note, if you are someone who deals with hormone fluctuations, I also find it really helpful to. Cuz the times when I'm like, oh my gosh, life is hard, everything sucks. Like I'm terrible, I look like a wild beast. I will go back to last month on the same day and every single time I was saying the same thing on the same day last month and I'm like, oh, it's hormones. We did a recap. We talked about where we were in January. North Star goal. What is the equation? Wheel of life then versus now. Let's talk about owning your past a little bit more in depth, but also in a way that I hope is motivating to you. If you are feeling a bit discouraged, whether you thought you'd be further along or maybe you hadn't been honest with yourself and you just looked at your wheel and you're like, oh crap. It's actually like not where I thought it was gonna be. Whatever your reasoning, let's talk about why right now feels harder than back in January did. There is a really good reason why January and or whenever you set your goal felt more exciting and more empowering and more motivational than you currently feel right now. There's also a reason why when you get toward the end of a project, you find a little extra gear you didn't know you had. You start moving faster, you start feeling excited and you sort of like get. See a way forward. There's a reason why that happens and it's so obvious, but until someone says it to you, you don't actually think it. Which is we think that the road to where we want to go looks like this. We are here and we're headed up here. Top of the. The mountain, right? I'm gonna draw. This is my beautiful drawing. Wow. Okay. I know you've never seen anything so beautiful in your life. This is obviously a mountain, right? This is where you are, this is where you wanna go. And we think that the journey to achieving any goal, personal, professional, monetary, whatever, looks like the, you know, we're gonna walk through the valley of the shadow of death. We're gonna climb up this mountain, we're gonna get to the top of the mountain, and that is where our goal is waiting. And we use analogies for this all the time. You've heard a million versions of getting to the top of the mountain. Everything you want is all uphill. You've heard these things. So it's easy to wonder why it felt so exciting in the beginning, right when you would think that that would almost be harder because you're starting a climb. But that's not actually what goal achievement is really like. That's not the path. There's a study from 2011 that was published in like, some science journal and there are doctors, which I will have the editors, like, put their name. They're like, these are legit people. This is not just your friend Rach who is telling you this thing. And they studied the path of goal achievement to any kind of goal achievement. And here is what they found. Most people think that it's the climb to the top of the mountain. What it actually is, is looks more like this. They found that the path is actually this sort of U shaped. I've heard someone use the term trough of despair before. I don't think it was about this, but honestly, I'm going to call this the trough of despair. Where we are versus where we want to go. What you actually don't understand that is happening is this gross and messy middle. See, when you started out on the journey, you were excited, you felt motivated, you had a new vision for yourself. You signed up for premium podcast community. You were like, I am one of Rachel's besties. We are hanging out. We are doing amazing things this year. You felt pumped in the beginning. Almost every goal that every human sets comes with some excitement around what the goal is. We feel inspired by where it is we want to go. And that's the beginning. And when you get over here towards the end, you're like, oh, my gosh, I could see the finish line, right? Think about a marathon. I talked about a marathon earlier. When you get to like, mile 23, you want to die. Don't get me wrong, I've never not wanted to die while running a marathon. But at the same time, you're like, I did 23 miles, I can do three more. You're so close to the finish that, that you're. You're going to sprint. Not really sprint, because then you would actually die, but you're so close to the finish that you actually can find the umph to keep going. But in the middle, the excitement's gone, the energy's gone, January's gone. In this messy middle, you're just, you feel like you're doing the same thing over and over, not really getting results. It's now boring. That thing over there looks so much funner. I'm just gonna, like, trade my Goal. Go do that goal. Let me just start all over again. Because at least in the beginning of the journey, it's fun. We come up with all of these reasons why it's not working. It's working. You're just in the boring middle. You're here. If you are still doing all the things that you're supposed to be doing. If you are, you know, getting your workouts in and you're drinking your water and you're having your protein and you're moving forward and you're calling the clients and you're doing the things and you are making progress, but the progress is minuscule. Understand that it will not feel as exciting as back in January when you were trying for the first time and you lost the first pound or you got the first client right? Back then, you were like, holy crap, it's working. Going from zero to one huge feels like you invented fire. Going from like 14 to 15, you've been at it for six months. It's not that exciting. And the messy middle is when the devil shows up to try and tell you to stop trying. Right? It's when that voice in the back of your mind is like, this doesn't really work. It's when it's like, well, what's even the point here? Why are we even doing this thing? It'd be so much easier to go do that thing. It'd be so much easier to give up. It'd be so much easier to lay out a new goal. You maybe need to hear right now that you don't need a new goal. You just need to keep doing the boring stuff in the middle. Yes, it's boring. Literally every single person that I admire in health or fitness or business or anything. I have read so many books. I've listened to endless podcasts. I've gotten to meet these people. I've interviewed them here on the show. So many people say a version of the same thing, which is, this is boring. The stuff that works and the stuff that lasts is boring. It just is. It's the middle. Stop talking yourself out of it in the middle just because it's not as sexy as the beginning. This is the work. And, like, man, I wish that I had the magic bullet to tell you guys, but I've been saying this for ages. There isn't a magic bullet. There isn't. There's a bunch of stuff that will distract you. There are a bunch of stuff that will make you think that you could do another thing. I promise. There's all of these things that you could be pursuing instead of what you're meant to be doing. Or you could just do the work. You could just do the work, stop starting over and get where you want to go. Theme: Mid-Year Goal Assessment & The Messy Middle of Progress
Rachel Hollis invites listeners to pause and conduct a meaningful mid-year check-in on their life goals using her signature “Wheel of Life” reflection. This teaser excerpt from her Premium Membership Class blends motivational insight, practical self-assessment tactics, and encouragement for anyone feeling stuck or underwhelmed by their progress. Rachel uses visual analogies and personal stories to normalize the messy, “boring middle” of self-improvement—reassuring the audience that continued, even unexciting, effort is the true path to lasting growth.
“Your willingness to look at these things means that you are doing more for your goals and your life than 99% of people will ever do.” (Rachel, 06:40)
(08:00–15:00)
“Even if you improved all the areas in your wheel…if this is all, like, jacked and crazy, you're not going to get very far.” (Rachel, 11:00)
“Who cares if you are crushing it at work, but you have no relationship with your kids?...I would rather have a higher quality of life than a life where you fly around in private jets and you just keep chasing more and more money.” (Rachel, 12:05)
(16:00–18:45)
“Understand that you are doing something really empowering right now by having the courage to look.” (Rachel, 08:15)
(19:00–28:20)
“There is a really good reason why January and…whenever you set your goal felt more exciting and more empowering and more motivational than you currently feel right now.” (Rachel, 19:10)
“We think that the road to where we want to go…looks like we’re headed up here—top of the mountain…But that's not actually what goal achievement is really like…It [actually] looks more like this U.” (Rachel, 20:10)
"Going from zero to one—huge, feels like you invented fire. Going from like 14 to 15, you've been at it for six months. It's not that exciting." (Rachel, 25:35)
“Literally every single person that I admire…say(s) a version of the same thing, which is: this is boring. The stuff that works and the stuff that lasts is boring. It just is.” (Rachel, 27:25)
“You maybe need to hear right now that you don’t need a new goal. You just need to keep doing the boring stuff in the middle. Yes, it's boring.” (Rachel, 26:10)
On Check-ins:
“Your willingness to look at these things means that you are doing more for your goals and your life than 99% of people will ever do.” (06:40)
On the Wheel of Life Analogy:
“Who cares if you are crushing it at work, but you have no relationship with your kids?” (12:05)
On fulfillment vs. success:
“Respectfully, there is a reason why those people just keep making more and more money. Why? They are trying to fill a void that cannot be filled by financial success.” (12:55)
On the 'trough of despair':
"We think that the road to where we want to go…looks like we’re headed up here—top of the mountain…But that's not actually what goal achievement is really like…It [actually] looks more like this U." (20:10)
On sticking to the boring middle:
“The stuff that works and the stuff that lasts is boring. It just is. It's the middle. Stop talking yourself out of it in the middle just because it's not as sexy as the beginning.” (27:35)
On what most people need:
“You maybe need to hear right now that you don't need a new goal. You just need to keep doing the boring stuff in the middle.” (26:10)
This episode is ideal for anyone struggling with the plateau that comes after the initial excitement of goal-setting, offering re-centering advice with Rachel’s trademark candor, encouragement, and practical wisdom.
