Foreign.
Rob Nudds
Hello, watch fans, and welcome to another edition of the Real Time show with me, your friendly neighborhood watchmaker, Rob Nudds. Once again, we're calling in from the Villa Sarasan in Geneva for the time to watches 2025 event. And today I'm with Jennifer from Volcan. Or Volcan. How do I pronounce it properly?
Jennifer
Actually, in English it's volcane, but in French it's Vulcan.
Rob Nudds
Yeah, sounds much better in French.
Jennifer
Really?
Rob Nudds
Well, I think it sounds. Sounds a bit sexy, doesn't it? We always make things sound less sexy. And French is good at sexy words. You know, I was trying to pronounce herbelaine the other day, and in English we'd call it herberlin, which is not very attractive really, is it? You know, we're not good at that. Nobody thinks of the British for aesthetics or, you know, I think we have quite nice voices, but we just mispronounce words so badly. Does it bother you when someone mispronounces Vulcane?
Jennifer
No, actually, I think, like, I have many, many clients and visitors, actually, like, they say, like, Volcan. So I think, yeah, in English they pronounce Vulcan. But it's good. It's correct.
Rob Nudds
Yeah, that's correct enough. Okay, so before we dive into the novelties and talk about a very recent sellout success that you had with a new special edition, I would like to know about your backstory because this is the first time you've been on the Real Show. You tell me it's the first podcast you've ever done. Is that true?
Jennifer
Yeah, exactly.
Rob Nudds
Well, you look like a natural. You've got the headphones on. You just picked them up and put them on. Like that was a natural thing. Most people just forget the headphones exist. I think you've got a long future.
Jennifer
In podcasting, probably because, like, I made like, some. I was even. I don't have. I don't feel that stressed because, like, probably I did, like, you know, musical in. Yeah, yeah. So it was guys and adults probably even about that because I was in different, like. Yeah, yeah. I don't know how to explain it, but, like, I don't feel that stressed because, like, probably I think I feel, like, good, like speaking English, probably. I don't know.
Rob Nudds
Good. Well, that's good because I can't speak Spanish. Is Spanish your native language?
Jennifer
Yeah, it's my first language.
Rob Nudds
So which part of Spain are you from?
Jennifer
Where I'm from? I don't know. Yeah, Valens.
Rob Nudds
Okay.
Jennifer
Yeah.
Rob Nudds
Is that Valencia?
Jennifer
Yeah. You know what's happening There. No, I don't know what's happening. But you. I don't know if you heard about, like in October we had the. Dana. No, you don't know about it. The water and.
Rob Nudds
Oh, I did. Oh, I did hear about that. Yeah.
Jennifer
Yeah, it was in Lawrence, unfortunately.
Rob Nudds
Oh, dear. I'm sorry to hear that. Do you go back home often or do you.
Jennifer
No, but I'll be. I'm going to now in. In August. Yeah.
Rob Nudds
Okay.
Jennifer
I don't know how it will be, but probably it's a disaster. Yeah.
Rob Nudds
Oh, God.
Jennifer
Yeah.
Rob Nudds
So do you spend most of your time traveling or are you normally based in Switzerland?
Jennifer
Actually, Vulcan is growing a lot right now and I have many, many events because it's actually me who is. I organize the events. And the last year we didn't had like. So we didn't travel that. That much. But like, we will be this year in windups. So we will be in Chicago, San Francisco the next year, the next month. Sorry. And we will be in New York City. So actually, I think this year we will travel a lot. Yeah.
Rob Nudds
Do you like traveling?
Jennifer
I think it's good, but it's another perspective, you know, because, like, when you go for work, you don't go just to visit, you know, it's like you go to like, for work. And even this year I feel that, like in here in Geneva, I'm not going out that much, you know, to the. To the parties. Yeah, no, it's. Yeah, but because it's positive, you know, because even you told me about the. The Small Seconds because they had big success right now. And actually, yeah, the launch was on Monday of the Small Seconds limited edition and it's already sold out, so. Because we're working a lot and yeah, we will be more attending in different events this year and. But it's something really good, you know, like. Yeah, probably.
Rob Nudds
Well, I think you're wise to not be going out to every party every night this year. I've had a very different experience of this. Fair in comparison to the last few because I decided to go sober and not drink for the whole week. Now, for you, I don't know if that's a big deal, but for me that was a bit of a change of pace, really. I mean, I don't want to paint myself in too bad a light, but I travel a lot. I'm on the road all the time. I'm normally alone.
Jennifer
I get it.
Rob Nudds
So my hobby is to go to the pub and watch sport and just sit there alone drinking Guinness. But I thought this year, okay. I'm going to be on film a lot. I've got to be recording. I have to be really clear in my head and really sharp and long hours, obviously, early out of bed. And.
Jennifer
And do you, like, travel?
Rob Nudds
I do like travel, but there's a balance, right, between traveling for work and actually like, living.
Jennifer
Yeah.
Rob Nudds
So for sure, I. I haven't been home for more than 10 days in a row since July. So, you know, it's kind of. It takes a toll. And I mean, look at me. The laughter says it. All right, audience. You know, I'm. I'm worn out and I can't wait to get back after this fair. I've got to go straight back to Copenhagen, where I spend a lot of time working for a week or so, and then I'm going to be back home in Germany and relaxing and having a nice summer at last.
Jennifer
If you have, if you have like that, all this, I think you can be even proud because you, you like, you have, like, everybody heard about, like, the postcards and everything. So I think you have to be even, like, you have to be proud to travel a lot because you made it.
Rob Nudds
I survived. Yeah. So far, so good.
Jennifer
Yeah, it's something. Yeah.
Rob Nudds
I think I need to get a bit more balance in the future because, you know, you're experiencing it now because Volcano is having such success. Obviously, the burden on you of traveling is going to get greater and greater, but taking that time away from being on the road and like, decompressing and having a life is important. So let's talk about your life. Let's talk about what you wanted to do before you got into watchmaking, because you were telling me off air, and it's very, very interesting.
Jennifer
Yeah, Actually, just later. And I wanted to work, like, for. To make something good for, like, the word, you know. And, um, actually, I was. I was in Paris and when I finished, like, the university, I, I am. I. I was back to my country in Spain, in Valens, I told you. And I wanted to work for the embassy in Madrid, the French embassy. And because I needed, like, this experience to get in. In un and I, I even. I went. I even went to the un, India, in New York City. It was really good. And I actually, I never made the French nationality. So when I, I, you know, like, the. I had the option to get in the embassy because I didn't have the, the nationality. They said I can't, you know, So I said, okay, but I have to try to go to Switzerland because I wanted to work for the for.
Rob Nudds
Okay.
Jennifer
And when, you know, these doors for me was closed, I said, okay, I should, like, I was. I was really passionate about the watches and probably for some people it's really strange to change life from Paris to go to the Locke because it's pretty common. It's pretty empty right in the lock now. Yeah, I'm in the LOC right now. So Ravi is actually the manufacturer. And yeah, it was really interesting, but I said, okay, I have to go. Like, to see like, even I tried, you know. And. And I think when. When you do what you like the most is probably when like the life give you the opportunity and you have to be where you have like, I mean, the life bring you where you have to go and where you have to be. So I went to the lock and I didn't expect it to like, to find like that, like fast, you know, like volcano. But I think probably because I speak six languages. Probably that was like, why six languages? Yeah.
Rob Nudds
Okay, so Spanish, English, obviously you told me you don't speak German, which is the only one I could have had a go at conversing with you in. But what are the other four? French, Ithalian, Italian. Okay. Portuguese and Portuguese.
Jennifer
You know Catalan, by the way.
Rob Nudds
Catalan, yeah, yeah. Like North East Spanish.
Jennifer
Yeah. But even in Valley to speak Valencian is actually the same.
Rob Nudds
Oh, okay. Well, that's seven, isn't it? If you count Catalan. How did I overcount? Spanish, French, Portuguese, Catalan. And what was the other one?
Jennifer
I hope the next one it will be German.
Rob Nudds
I don't know, I've run out. Okay, number seven will be Germanic languages.
Jennifer
Yeah.
Rob Nudds
So when you learn that many languages, does it get easier and easier to learn new languages because you have so much experience?
Jennifer
Yeah, obviously. Yeah. Because like when you. I mean, I grew up with three languages, which was like Catholic, Spanish and French. And it's easier to. Because, you know, like from where you have to start, like, probably like, I mean, for me, the first thing, what you have to learn is probably like, like the. Who explain it. Preposition. I know how. Preposition. Yeah. Prepositions, I think is the first step because when. Because the vocabulary takes more time, you know, and when you say, okay, no, no, but you know, it's like something. It's like changing the context. Or you can say like, like something, you know, it. Comparation or, you know, I think is the first step to learn languages is prepositions. Yeah. And probably people started like with like vocabulary, which is actually more complicated. It takes more time. And there is so many you know, like words. But you have a. I had, you know, like my. The first language when I. When I. Which I learned it, it was. It was Portuguese and Portuguese, it was because, like, I really like. Singer in Brazil is Marile Mendonza.
Rob Nudds
Okay.
Jennifer
And when you like something about, like, one culture, you know, it's you. You're really interested and that makes, like, give you the opportunity to be really motivated. And I never. I never learned, like, any language at school. You have to, like, you have to learn taking the time you need. And if you like, like music like me, it was. I think you have something what really interests you, and you. You do it for pleasure. You do it because, like, you want. You really want to understand it, you know, and it's something different because, like, if you. If I tell you, you have to learn just this. I know. Vocabulary or like, your school, and you have to learn, like, some sentences. It's pretty different because you. You're not doing. Because you. You're really passionate about. You understand something, or because it's something where you like to do in, like a hobby, you know?
Rob Nudds
Yeah. Yeah. Without that passion, that motivation, it's really hard to.
Jennifer
Yeah.
Rob Nudds
You know, if you're at school sometimes, I think, especially in England, because the language teaching is terrible and it's not even compulsory anymore. I don't think for kids to learn a language. When I was a kid, it's. You had to do at least one to. I think you had to do one to GCSE. I think, you know, our exams at like, 16 years old.
Jennifer
Yeah.
Rob Nudds
I did French and German because I wanted to be a translator. Actually, when I was younger, I'm trying.
Jennifer
With German, but it's really different.
Rob Nudds
Well, you know, you're right.
Jennifer
Complicated. Yeah.
Rob Nudds
Because the prepositions are extremely confusing.
Jennifer
Yeah. Even the verbs are.
Rob Nudds
Yeah, they do all.
Jennifer
And. Yeah, it's even.
Rob Nudds
Well, the second verb is at the end and the third one goes beyond.
Jennifer
Oh, my goodness.
Rob Nudds
I don't even.
Jennifer
But I know some, like, Swiss words. Like Swiss German words. Yeah.
Rob Nudds
Okay. Well, Swiss German's another thing entirely because that's. You can't even write in Swiss German. You got to sing it. Yeah, I. I haven't done any German lessons since I was at school. I just learned German from watching a TV show every Sunday called Tartort. It's like. It means like, crime scene in English. And it's like a really old. It's been going for, like, 50 years, this serial, and they have different teams in every city in Germany, so there's like, one Week it's Bremen, one week it's Dresden, one week it's Munich, and, and so on and so forth. And that was really advantageous because it meant that I was able to like, pick up all the different accents and like, be able to, like, get into the way of, you know, actually communicating. So I really need to do. I really do need to take a class because what it left me with was a huge amount of vocabulary.
Jennifer
Yeah.
Rob Nudds
But the preposition still, like, I don't want. It transforms so much and it moves around. English is so easy in comparison because you can basically say anything you want or however you want and people will understand you. But in Germany, not the case. So good luck.
Jennifer
Yeah, thank you.
Rob Nudds
Let's talk about watches because although this is fascinating, talking with a polyglot, we should probably talk about the lovely watches you brought with you. So you found your way into watchmaking. Life has led you where you need to be. You're living in Le Lock, which is a very different pace of life from Paris, and you're working with these beautiful machines. So tell me what you brought along for us to dive into.
Jennifer
So we have the chronographs. The launch will be the next week on Thursday. And we have two Skin Diver chronographs.
Rob Nudds
I've heard a lot about this piece, by the way. People have been coming into the studio saying, oh, have you seen the new Skin Diver? What is a Skin Diver?
Jennifer
The Skin Diver is actually a watch from 60s and we combinated with the strap, the Skin Diver strap, which is actually a vintage one from 70s.
Rob Nudds
Okay.
Jennifer
And we even proposed this chronograph with this same bracelet. And you can even see like it's a really vintage watch.
Rob Nudds
Okay. Yeah.
Jennifer
We have, there is the panda and the black one.
Rob Nudds
Okay. So two colorways, we've got a white sunray dial with two black sub dials in the first five minutes. No, the first two. No, the first three minutes of the minutes subdial are marked out in red. Why are they marked out in red?
Jennifer
200 meters also.
Rob Nudds
That's 200 meters, water resistant. So why have we got this little segment of red on the 30 minute sub dial for the first 3 minutes? Why is that red bit there?
Jennifer
Oh, because we, I mean, we just like took the vintage one from the vintage one. Yeah.
Rob Nudds
So it's totally inspired.
Jennifer
Yeah, exactly.
Rob Nudds
Okay, very good. And we've got a ceramic bezel.
Jennifer
The only thing that we change is the hands. If you see. Oh, yeah, yeah.
Rob Nudds
Okay. So we've got a really vintage, inspired Skin Diver and it's got like a box crystal really. So it's got quite a lot of depth to the dive sapphire crystal and it's got applied indexes filled with lume and go in seconds Register at 9 o' clock and a 30 minute counter at 3 o' clock. And around the outside of the dial we have a tachymeter. Is that. And then on the bezel we've got a ceramic. A ceramic bezel with a 5 minutes countdown or an hour.
Jennifer
Yeah, bidirectional.
Rob Nudds
Bidirectional bezel. Okay. So what's the retail price of this one?
Jennifer
In six strength.
Rob Nudds
Yeah, that's fine. Yeah.
Jennifer
In six strength with the little kafkin strap is 2,500 and for this one with the bracelet is 2,900. Wait, sorry, it wasn't eras with the bracelet is 2,760 Swiss francs. Yeah.
Rob Nudds
And the bracelet is really cool. So this is like a really large linked bracelet but with excellent chamfering on the sides and also on the top angle of a bracelet. So it looks extremely vintage.
Jennifer
Yeah, exactly.
Rob Nudds
And then you've got a micro adjust clasp which everybody will be glad to see. It's quite a lot of adjustment as well.
Jennifer
Yeah, exactly.
Rob Nudds
How many? It's like 2 centimeters almost. Wow. Yeah. That's incredible. So a beautiful clasp as well with. With the volcan logo polished against the brushed background and standing that in relief. Hmm. Very nice.
Jennifer
Thank you.
Rob Nudds
So what else have you brought? What's this?
Jennifer
This one is the nautical one. Have you heard about it?
Rob Nudds
I've heard about it but why don't you tell me about it?
Jennifer
Actually for this one we made this new rubber strap.
Rob Nudds
Cool.
Jennifer
Which is more new because the. Actually the original one is with a tropic rubber strap. So for this one is this the piece which have more history for this one actually there is. I don't, I don't remember like you know Cousteau.
Rob Nudds
Yeah.
Jennifer
He actually is the, the last. I don't explain it. The like the different steps of decompression. You can see the, the. The dial. You can turn it. Have you seen this is the last crown.
Rob Nudds
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jennifer
And you. And with the alarm you can like they, they were calculating the time of decompression. So you have the different steps of the compression and they were using calculating time with the alarm and it was the first watch to go through 300 meters before. Like it was actually the first one. Even if you go to the museum in of the international museum in short form you can see there is even this piece like the Best piece in the 60s.
Rob Nudds
So we've got a sliding decompression calculator basically. And then there's an alarm as well, which is a typical thing from volcano. That alarm, it's more of a vibration really than a sound that you feel underwater.
Jennifer
But it's pretty loud also.
Rob Nudds
It's pretty loud outside of water.
Jennifer
Yeah, it's pretty loud. You know, it's the, the louder one in the world is 78 decibels. And because there is the, like the resonance case back, if you can see like it is a triple steel case back, you can do you and I.
Rob Nudds
It's pretty cool. The case back's got like holes in it to amplify the sound that's coming out of the middle of the room. It's awesome actually. I mean, I love the alarm function in a volcano. There's nothing like it. My favorite model is still the Cricket, but this one is very striking and historically very relevant. It's very big, but wears quite well.
Jennifer
42.
Rob Nudds
It's not only 42, is it?
Jennifer
Yeah. Is it?
Rob Nudds
Wow. It looks enormous. I don't know why it looks so big actually. Maybe I'm just used to wearing smaller watches these days. But yeah, it's got a pretty big footprint. It's got a lovely high domed crystal, like a walled sapphire crystal. And it doesn't look like anything else on the market. Right. It's one of the most striking pieces from Volcan.
Jennifer
Yeah, it's actually pretty vintage. We always make like renditions.
Rob Nudds
What's your favorite model in the collection?
Jennifer
Probably, probably this one. Yeah. Because I'm really attached with the stories of every, every brand.
Rob Nudds
Now you mentioned that you had a passion for watches before you decided to join Volcan. Now you moved to Leloc before you joined Volcan. Yeah, that's, that's interesting.
Jennifer
Yeah, well, it's what I told you. Like, I didn't know if I, I find like a work with. To work with watches. But like I really went without to know what to do because my first plan was you know, like concert. So I had to find some. Something else. And actually I was every, like it was every time passionated about watches and I said okay, I should try and I, yeah, I went to, to the lock and I said I have to have to try the watch industry.
Rob Nudds
Okay, so did you collect watches before this?
Jennifer
Yeah, exactly.
Rob Nudds
So what kind of watches did you collect?
Jennifer
I have, I really like the, the, the vintage watches. So I have even like, I have a Zenith one. Yeah, A vintage one. And I like even, even More the Chronos. I like a lot of the Chronos. And yeah, it's.
Rob Nudds
Yeah, now a pleasure to work with watches that you already. Already loved. So where did this passion for watches come from? Is it something in your family or is it just something you found for yourself?
Jennifer
Actually, I think I even worked in this. In sports, I told you, in Le Mans. And I think it's something when actually it's something when sometimes it matched, you know.
Rob Nudds
Yeah. Two things just come together. So.
Jennifer
Yeah, I think everybody who like watches, like, even like the industry of motors and everything.
Rob Nudds
Yeah, yeah, yeah. We like things, complicated things that work very well.
Jennifer
Yeah, we like precision. We like, you know, it's something. It's a really different word. And I'm someone because I speak six languages. I. I have. I really like to learn every day. And if I work and I don't learn every day, I feel like, bored, you know, because probably I. I really like to work in Volcanic because it's a little manufacturer, but you feel more, you know, like near with the product because like, you. You have to be like polyvalent. So I'm someone polyglot, you know, I talk and I have to, you know, you have to every time, like, find something. I have the. I have the. The. This like, freedom to like, manage some stuff, to have ideas. And it's something really important, I think, to do something every day when it's which, like inspire you and you feel like near and you really, like, really want, like to give something for the brand. And I think this freedom to like. I'm young, you know, I'm 25. 26. Sorry, I'm 26. So I think is the moment when you're young to find what you really like the most to do where you better and what you can make where you can be better even. I think it's really like when you're young, you have to be somewhere where you can find you and where you can find what you really like to. Where. What you really like to do, you know? So I think, yeah, to do like something where I was like, passionate. I think it's something where I have this, you know, like, I know how to explain it, but probably it's not. We know talking about what. But I think to wake up every day and to do what you do is where you can be better.
Rob Nudds
Well, you picked a good brand if you like learning every day because Vulcan's got a long and very full history.
Jennifer
Yes, exactly. I'm making the catalog right now. It's the new project that's why I'm saying that it's like this freedom is really important for me to grow and to give. And I'm trying to find what I can do and what I can make better. My ideas is really important to have this freedom.
Rob Nudds
Yeah, leaving a mark on a company, personally, I think it's a good ambition and it's only good for the company when you're that personally invested in the company's success and its fervorance. Only good things to come. Jennifer, thank you for your time. Thank you for bringing the watches to show me and thanks for sharing your story. It's very interesting to hear people from all different walks of life. So I wish you a very good end to the fair and a lovely day.
Jennifer
Thank you. You too.
Alain
I don't know about you, Alain, but I have always had an incredible soft spot for Volcan. And I'll tell you for why. Because as you may know, I'm a huge fan of American presidential history and the watch. The cricket is an icon within the halls of power in Washington and I love it and want one and there's nothing like it and convince me otherwise.
Sam
Well, that makes the two of us. So I love it so much that I actually became a dealer with Ace Jewelers a few Geneva watch days ago that you and I visited their booth together and I hoped they were rubbish. I hope the quality wasn't good enough. I hope the pricing was off. I hoped the team sucked.
Alain
Yeah.
Sam
But, well, they ticked all the boxes. So Dominic is great. Jennifer is great. Nowadays, our dear friend sexy boy Guillaume Ladet helps them out a bit from the sidelines. The current calibers for the cricket watches are made in house. All the other calibers are not. They made a push they downwards. The Grand Prix watch that they launched last summer, Geneva watch days, is a hit. In my humble opinion, too low in price. They launched, I believe, two new variations in green and blue during time to watches that are now already sold out. I believe. Well, they're sold out at Ace. Yeah, I don't have much to criticize. They made a nice skin diver chrono which is a replica of the back catalog. Obviously it has sexy boy written all over it and there is nothing wrong about it. So yeah, I. I want to say something bad because, you know, sometimes you and I rave too much about everything we discuss.
Alain
Yeah, yeah.
Sam
But yeah, we're biased. Yeah, we're watch nerds. Yeah. We literally love everything that displays time. I'm not sure we're biased.
Alain
I think we just have an opinion.
Sam
Yeah.
Alain
Same as being biased. No one's paying us.
Rob Nudds
No.
Sam
Well, we're saying the positive.
Alain
Well, yeah, in most cases. I've heard you've been pretty uncompromising and one or two occasions, to be honest, and I think I have been as well in time. But we like watchers. We like people to do stuff well. And Voken does things well. And now you mentioned it, they're quite a sexy team from top to bottom, aren't they? Got sexy boy right up there. But everyone in the team is hot stuff.
Sam
Yeah, you're right. It's a holistic, sexy brand. If you don't agree with us, dear listener, please do join the conversation in the real time show community. We'd love to hear your voice.
Rob Nudds
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
Alain
And we've never thought about ranking brands in terms of hotness, have we? Until maybe Stored now. Well, okay. Right. Well, who's going to come for Volcan? Who's going to knock them off their perch? We're putting them in at the top there. Okay. It's going to be very, very controversial. All right. Get involved with the hilarity that we might just have accidentally commenced by joining the real time show network. You can do so by dropping us a message on either Rob or alontherealtime show or via the official Instagram handle at therealtime show.
