Frank Sinatra
Frank Sinatra transcribed as Rocky Fortune NBC presents Frank Sinatra starring as that footloose and fancy free young gentleman, Rocky Fortune.
Rocky Fortune
5. You know, it takes a real artist to get real involved. And brother, when it comes to that art, I'm the original Mike Angelo. But I gotta admit, I asked for it sometimes. This was one of those times. I was mad. Mad enough to dream this rack of mine up to seven feet of steel. Maybe I was just a lox looking for a bagel blanket, but some smooth creep put a permanent curl on my lip. It's not tough to understand when circumstances puts a guy on the wrong road. Slums make monsters out of a lot of good citizens. But when a creep uses education, money and a decent background to give him a background of crime, this is real slime. This guy wasn't even domestic. We imported him. I met this here gentleman when he was going with a sister of one of my neighborhood buddies. Her name was Ellie. She was fast, frustrated, 40, but it wasn't her fault. She spent her manhunting years looking after five brothers and sisters and heating the Saturday night bath water on a stove of the cold water flat. I didn't know there was a guy in the picture till we were talking one night.
Ellie
Rocky, you got a good head on your shoulders. What do you think I should do?
Rocky Fortune
What's with this Dorothy Dix jazz? Do about what?
Ellie
Well, now that all the kids except Sammy are married, I'd like to get married too.
Rocky Fortune
You mean Ellie's got a fella?
Ellie
Didn't you think it was possible?
Rocky Fortune
Oh, come on, honey, I'm kidding. Who said it wasn't possible? The guy who gets you is real lucky. Only I didn't know there was a guy. Who is he? Where'd you meet him?
Ellie
I, I, I can't tell you, Rocky.
Rocky Fortune
So you picked up a guy. That's something.
Ellie
It's not that I never picked up a man in my life. Only it's not easy for a girl my age to meet eligibles. I, I answered nad Ellie.
Rocky Fortune
You fell for that routine, so why not?
Ellie
There's some nice refined ads you see, most of them are like me, Rocky. They're lonely. I figured I'd maybe meet a nice widower who wanted somebody to look after me.
Rocky Fortune
But you asked me what I thought. Does that mean you met somebody?
Ellie
That's right, Rocky. Rocky wants to marry me.
Rocky Fortune
Well, how come your brother Sammy never mentioned this? Doesn't he know about it?
Ellie
No, no, Rocky. And don't tell him. I know already what he'll say about Elmer.
Rocky Fortune
About who?
Ellie
Now, don't you laugh, Rocky. His name is Elmer. Elmer Brock.
Rocky Fortune
Ouch.
Ellie
I met him through an exceptionally well worded ad. And I consider myself very fortunate. And if you're going to make fun of me, I'm sorry I ever burdened you with my problem.
Rocky Fortune
Now, honey, take it easy. Ellie. You know I love you like you were one of my own. Only you should talk this over with Sammy and let him meet this guy.
Ellie
Sammy has nothing in common with Elmer. They speak different languages.
Rocky Fortune
What does this guy talk, Hindustan or something?
Ellie
He happened to be a very cultured and refined gentleman.
Rocky Fortune
So what's a cultured, refined gentleman with so much on the ball doing advertising for company? What's the matter with him?
Ellie
He's lonely, Rocky. But, like I'm lonely. You make people laugh. You got charm. You got lots of friends. You don't know what it's like to sit and have a conversation all by yourself. You sit and you talk to yourself. And then you realize that no words are coming out. It's only your mind can hear you. And you start thinking maybe you're losing your mind. A horrible thing to be lonely, Rocky. Like having a hole in your heart.
Rocky Fortune
Sure, I guess. Maybe I got a hole in my head, not my heart. I'm sure he's a wonderful guy, Ellie. Sure, I guess you ought to marry him at that.
Ellie
Thanks, Rocky. Thanks for telling me that.
Rocky Fortune
She thanked me for advising her to marry him. That was almost funny because I found out a lot of things after that. For example, I found out why she didn't want to tell Sammy and have him meet the Selma. Ellie knew she shouldn't marry him. She was afraid Sammy would talk her into being sensible. She didn't want to be sensible. She just wanted to be married. So Ellie got her fella and got married. Sammy wasn't too happy about it. Six months later, he got the real reaction. You know what that sound is? That's a man crying, crying his guts out. You know what it's like to sit and listen to a grown man, a guy you grew up with, tear himself in two Nothing you can do about it. Just sit and talk to yourself. Bleed and cry inside with him till finally you can't stand it any longer. Stop it, kid. Come on, stop. Rocky. Huggy. I. I can't. I can't help it, Rocky. What's in you, kid? What is it? It's Ellie, Rocky.
Narrator
Ellie's.
Rocky Fortune
I'll give you the details. Just like the lonely Mr. Fancy Pants from abroad gave it to the coroner at the inquest.
Elmer Bruff
We had been out visiting some friends. My wife had been kind of quiet all evening. Usually she only takes a single drink. This night she had four or five and they seemed to depress her. When we arrived home, she said she had something on her mind and wanted to drive and think it out alone. Since it already been a most unusual evening, I didn't question it. I was tired and had a few myself. So I fell asleep immediately and. And slept quite soundly. I. I found her in the morning. Evidently she had driven into the garage and fallen asleep at the wheel with the engine running. It must have been an accident.
Rocky Fortune
It was no accident.
Sammy
Ellie didn't.
Rocky Fortune
This court finds the deceased Ellie brought came to her death on the night of December 2nd by inhaling carbon monoxide fumes. Death was accidental. There was no accident.
Sammy
He killed her. I tell you. He killed her and I'll kill him.
Rocky Fortune
He's easy, kid. Come on, Sam.
Judge
Quiet.
Rocky Fortune
I finally got the kids sat on, but the damage was already in. Anything happens to Mr. Fancy Pants and the kid is booked solid for a one way trip to Sing Sing. I make coffee time with him and try to bring sense to some plan. I only know one thing, Rocky. Ellie gave her whole life to raising us kids for herself.
Sammy
She had nothing.
Rocky Fortune
All she knew was work, take care.
Sammy
Of the house, go to the movies once a week.
Rocky Fortune
Rocky. Sure, sure. She wound up with a few grand after the kids got married. She had herself a time. I know that, Sam. I know. Your kids were a whole life. And if anything happens to you now, that means she wasted her life. The other kids got families, Rocky.
Elmer Bruff
They.
Rocky Fortune
They can't take any chances. Ellie was all the family I had left. Ellie's dead and he killed that.
Sammy
Rocky.
Rocky Fortune
The law don't say that, kid. The law says it's an accident. And unless you got proof, you gotta go by the law. I don't need proof.
Sammy
She was my sister, Rocky.
Rocky Fortune
She was all I had. This creep killed her. I got nobody left.
Sammy
Nothing more to lose.
Rocky Fortune
Rocky.
Elmer Bruff
I'm gonna get him.
Sammy
I'm gonna get him.
Rocky Fortune
Two things told me the kids Words were Ms. The look in his eye and the bulge in his coat pocket. Sammy was a fighter and a rough and goat kid. But he never packed a heater. So I had to get the Mr. Fancy Pants and get him to leave town before Sammy killed. I knew Sammy would take the subway downtown and take the train out to the island where they had their house. Me with my no expense account had to beat him out there. A 15 cent phone call could maybe save me 4 bucks. Taxi. I invested. Hello, Elmer, this is Rocky Fortune.
Elmer Bruff
I'm glad you called, Rocky. I feel very badly about Sammy. It's horrible enough that Ellie is gone.
Sergeant Finger
But can't you possibly convince Sammy that.
Elmer Bruff
It was an accident?
Rocky Fortune
That's why I'm calling you, pal. I can't convince Sammy. We better do some talking right away.
Sergeant Finger
That's fine.
Elmer Bruff
Can you come out here?
Rocky Fortune
Wouldn't do any good. You're having company. And you better not be home when the company gets there.
Elmer Bruff
What you mean?
Rocky Fortune
I mean Sammy's on his way out and he's liable to want some target practice for the heater in his pocket. You could be the target. That's all I had to say. 20 minutes and one speeding. Dug it later. It's open.
Elmer Bruff
I got here as quickly as I could.
Rocky Fortune
I noticed. Sit down and listen to some news, Mr. Bruff. Tune in real close because there ain't gonna be a second time.
Elmer Bruff
I'm awfully sorry to do it, Rocky, but if Sammy actually has a gun, I should be forced to go to the police for protection until I leave town.
Rocky Fortune
Where you going?
Elmer Bruff
Well, I. I don't know yet. There too many memories around the house and around the town. You know how it is.
Rocky Fortune
You know, Elmer, somehow I got no tears for you. I think you're a rotten liar. You got Ellie's insurance, you're selling a house and you're blowing town. A nice, pretty convenient package.
Elmer Bruff
So you think as Sammy does?
Rocky Fortune
Don't put words in my mouth, Mr. Bruff. I'm liable to spit them back at you. And I'm getting mad. I'm getting real mad just looking at you. You just gave me the whole bit. I think Sammy's right. What would a fancy pants like you want with a 40 year old sweetheart like Ellie? Why would you marry.
Elmer Bruff
I married her because I loved her.
Rocky Fortune
Nice try, but no cigar. Mac, you married her for the 10 or 11,000 bucks you're in line for.
Elmer Bruff
I won't bother denying anything to you. There's no reason why I should. Elliot's case is closed. By the police.
Rocky Fortune
And aren't you real lucky? So Ellie's case is closed and off you go with the loot. Let's just get a repeat performance on what happened.
Elmer Bruff
I already told you the entire story. To the police, and the case is closed.
Rocky Fortune
I just now opened it, Mr. Bruff. And I just might open your head.
Elmer Bruff
Take your hands off me.
Rocky Fortune
Stop making with the Shakespearean drama. I'm only making sure you're sitting in that chair, not running to the cops. Not till you satisfy one question that bothers me.
Elmer Bruff
There's no reason for me to have to satisfy you.
Rocky Fortune
It hurts that I should have to disagree with such a distinguished man, but sit still or I'll beat your brains in.
Elmer Bruff
What do you want to know?
Rocky Fortune
Now you're getting smart. In my head, I've been running over the details on the first place. Like Sammy says, Ellie never went much on the liquor kick. And even if she did get loaded and did fall asleep in the garage with a motor running, who closed the garage door?
Elmer Bruff
I don't remember that it was closed.
Rocky Fortune
You told the coroner at the beginning of the inquest that it was closed.
Elmer Bruff
Yes, I suppose I did.
Rocky Fortune
So I get a picture of Ellie getting out of the car, closing the garage door, getting back in the car and falling asleep. Something's wrong with that picture, pal.
Elmer Bruff
Well, I didn't want to bring that out, but it. It bothered me, too. I know what happened, but I didn't want to harm Ellie's memory. She. She must have committed suicide.
Rocky Fortune
Why didn't the cops say that at the inquest?
Elmer Bruff
I had no idea. There's no use digging that up, Rocky. You can. You can only harm Elliot's memory.
Rocky Fortune
The man's worried about Ellie's memory. That's real touching. It also stinks. That felt real good. That felt right.
Elmer Bruff
Get something straight, Rocky. I can defend myself.
Rocky Fortune
You better get something straight, buddy. If I'm right, you're gonna have to.
Elmer Bruff
I'm not going to sit here and have myself set up either as a punching bag for you or a clay pigeon for Sammy. I'm getting police protection while I'm in town.
Rocky Fortune
If you go near the cops, I go to the insurance company and tell them you told me Ellie committed suicide. There was a double indemnity on that policy. And I'll bet you collect double because it was ruled an accidental debt.
Elmer Bruff
What do you want me to do?
Rocky Fortune
That's better. I'm calling the shots now, Mr. Fancy Pants. And I'll level with you. I tell Sammy nothing. Because if I do, he sure, to kill you. That helps nothing. You're gonna remove yourself from the local scene as of right now. And I'm gonna get you, mister, and I'm gonna do it nice and legal. I want you in one piece and very healthy. I'm gonna see to it that you get an extra special crew cut in a drape shape with a slip pants leg. We got no case now, but one day you're gonna be happy to turn yourself into the cops. Because that's the only way you'll ever get away from me. Make your plans, mister. Play your traveling music. Because you're traveling fast and I'm walking. While Fancy pants get set for his trip, I call my pal, Sergeant Hamilton J. Finger of the local gestapo. He verifies what I already know. You need fact to hold a guy for murder. The cops don't play hunches. He gets one bright idea and he figures the pattern is pretty set, could be brought. Worked the same gimmick back in the old country. He'd run a make through Scotland Yard. Finger reminded me of something else. If Mr. Bruff is a killer, I stand to lose something mighty important to me. Namely, my life. With the financial aid of those who lose their heads easily, I'd get set to chapel. Bruffs buys the drawing room to Los Angeles. Two days later, figuring I'm as good as him any day, I'd buy the same style. Two days later, finds us leaving Chicago. I keep low at first and then accidentally on purpose, just as he's ordering dessert in the diner. How do you spell cyanide, pal? I want to order some dessert for you.
Elmer Bruff
What's the idea, Rocky?
Rocky Fortune
I told you I was working a mustard plaster deal on you. Figured it was time I showed.
Elmer Bruff
What do you want now?
Rocky Fortune
I want to know how you got Ellie so loaded that she sat still while you killed her.
Elmer Bruff
I didn't kill her.
Rocky Fortune
I know. You said that she committed suicide. Ellie actually committed suicide when she married you. Only you helped to get to the burying stage.
Elmer Bruff
Look, Rocky, I'll make a deal. You, you're a young chap. You never had too much money. If you call off this insane chase, I'll. I'll give you $5,000.
Rocky Fortune
Five grand? I'm flattered. So you're that afraid of me?
Elmer Bruff
Get something through your head, Rocky. Physically, I'm not afraid of you. This much I'll admit. I married Ellie because I needed the money. Her money. I may even have made her slightly unhappy. Unhappy enough to commit suicide? I may even have made her suicide look Accidental. So I could collect on the double indemnity. But you have proof of nothing. Now be clever. Take the 5000.
Rocky Fortune
Do you know what Sammy would do to you if I ever repeated this conversation?
Elmer Bruff
Well, you won't do that. You protected me against Sammy simply because you knew he'd kill me and would have to pay for it. In the eyes of the law, he would have killed an innocent man.
Rocky Fortune
I wonder what would stop me from killing you. I hate you enough to carve your guts.
Elmer Bruff
You better be careful, Rocky. I may just grow to hate you that much too.
Rocky Fortune
That's when I was sure. I was looking into the eyes of a cold blooded murderer. And he was looking into the eyes of the guy he wanted most to kill. Hey, that's me. Like a flash, it came to me that for a change I was running off of the mouth much too much. The next stop the train made found me making a collect call of one Sergeant Finger.
Sergeant Finger
Soon as I heard the call was collect, I knew it was you, Rocky. You still with Bruff?
Rocky Fortune
Like chewing gum on a baby. Only I got a feeling I may be sorry. Finger, this guy's a killer.
Sergeant Finger
I know. How long a stopover where you are?
Rocky Fortune
Only a couple of minutes. Why?
Sergeant Finger
Well, never mind now. There's no time. Listen, I just got word back. This guy's wanted more countries than money. Three dames had fatal accidents and he was married to them when they had their accident. We got orders to grab him right away. And I tell you what. You have the train held. Get the police immediately. And don't you try anything yourself.
Rocky Fortune
What am I using for authority? My chicken inspector's badge?
Sergeant Finger
Yeah, yeah, that's right. And if he gets wind of anything, he'll skip. I'll tell you what. I'll rush a wire through to your next stop. It'll verify your story. When you get to Ogden, you show the wire to the authorities and have them hold him. Then call me.
Rocky Fortune
Now I'm working for the cops. What's with the loot, pal?
Sergeant Finger
Talk about that when you get back.
Rocky Fortune
If I get back. I was one nervous Joe when I got back on the train. Here I was, back to back with a killer. And I set myself up as a kingpin in his bowling alley. I spend my time keeping a make on my neighbor and my ear glued to the compartment wall between us. I'm concentrating on the sound next door so much and the lullaby of the rail starts ushering in the sandman. I fight to stay awake. I lose the fight. A little later, I shake myself awake Happy that I still can. A telegram of finger. This I need quickly. I could have slept through the delivery. So I ring to find out. Yes, Mr. Fortune, there was a telegram for you. Where is it, son? Well, I started to knock at your door, but the man in the next compartment said you were asleep and didn't want to be disturbed. My neighbor told you that? That's right. He said I had a telegram in my hand. And you gave him the telegram for me. Well, I always see you both together, so I figured it would be okay. By now he knows the whole story. Did I do wrong? Man, you just gave me a one way ticket to paradise. Only who wants to be an angel? I'll go get the telegram from him. By now it's in pieces. Where are we? How soon do we get into Ogden? Almost there, sir. About 10 minutes.
Elmer Bruff
Happy to see you up and about, Rocky.
Rocky Fortune
Yeah, I'm tickled to death myself.
Elmer Bruff
Let's get some air.
Rocky Fortune
Who needs it? Excuse me, sir. I got some things to take care of.
Elmer Bruff
We both need it. For a smart laddie, you make some stupid mistakes. Do you realize you've actually prodded me into killing you?
Rocky Fortune
Nice of me, wasn't it? Look, Ralph, use that gun and you'll have the whole train on your back in a minute.
Elmer Bruff
Oh, I realize that. I also realize that if I get rid of you before we hit Ogden, there'll be no one to call the police. Most of the passengers are asleep and there'll be no one in the observation car.
Rocky Fortune
I don't need a diagram, Mr. Accident Specialist. I didn't need a diagram. I was scheduled for a full. And this time there wasn't even a dame involved. It was a short hike to that observation car and he was right behind me all the time with a gun on my ribs. The trip back was uneventful. Didn't meet a soul and couldn't make a thing happen. Nothing there but a club car, a bar and no drinkers. Suddenly, the rear doors open and my future has arrived. My future home that is. Nestled between two shining steel rails with cinders from my pillow, the man finally made a noise.
Elmer Bruff
Turn around, Rocky. I said turn. That's it. Now start backing towards the guardrail.
Rocky Fortune
It happened. I saw it happen, but I didn't believe it. Drag him inside, boys. Yeah, drag me with him, boys. I don't think I can make it alone. I don't know where you guys came from, but I'm sure happy to see you. Oh, we've had the front, middle and rear of the train covered since you left your last stop. We were hiding behind the bar when you walked through the club car. How did you know about it? Got a call from Sergeant Finger. He was afraid Bruff would try to kill you before you reached Ogden. We couldn't tackle Bruff while he had the gun in your ribs. When he got you outside, the noise made it possible to sneak up on him without being heard or seen. Why didn't that idiot Finger tell me he was having a train boarded? I just lost 10 years of my life. Don't be rough on that idiot finger, Mr. Fortune. His call saved your life. Get you in tennesset to receive some news, pal. I love idiots from here to Eternity.
Frank Sinatra
NBC has presented Frank Sinatra as that footloose and fancy free young gentleman, Rocky Fortune. Others in tonight's cast included Paula Victor, Tom McKee, John Sutton, Barney Phillips, J. Loughlin and Maurice Hart. Tonight's script was written by Norm Sickle. Andrew C. Love directed. Now to tell you about next week's adventure, here's Frank Sinatra as Rocky Fortune.
Rocky Fortune
Next week I'll tell you about the time I got hired by the rodeo just before someone shot the boss and rustled the gate receipts. I ended up with a six shooter in my back and an invitation to be guest of honor at a Western fashion show, modeling an 18 foot necktie made of rope.
Frank Sinatra
If you're a driver who likes to travel at night because the highways are less crowded than in the daytime, you're courting danger and should be extra careful. Although fewer cars travel the roads at night, the death rate per vehicle is four times greater at night than in the daytime in proportion to traffic volume. If you must travel at night, use the utmost caution. Most of all, slow down from your normal daytime driving speed. The two biggest factors causing an alarming increase in night accidents are bad driving vision and excessive speed. Safety experts say that more than 20 million motorists have bad driving vision at night. About 3 million have vision so bad at night that they are dangerous when they drive. Now, you may have the vision of an owl after dark, but your number may be up if you drive too fast or become involved in an accident with one of these drivers with extremely bad night vision. Avoid driving at night whenever possible and at all times. Drive as though your life depends on does. Visit with fibber McGee and Molly tonight on the NBC Radio Network.
Narrator
Every door has a key. There's a key to every situation. Behind every unopened door, there is a mystery. And the opening of this door introduces us to another in the series. The Key. Anyone Here. Anyone at home? No one here, Gene.
John
It seems clean and neat for the Amazon jungle, doesn't it?
Sammy
Sure does.
Narrator
There's nobody about. All the same, somebody lives here, all right. Well, might as well make ourselves at homely. Turn up some water here, winsome.
John
Oh, do you think we ought to.
Narrator
Amazon hospitality. When you're lost, tired and thirsty, you don't worry where the water comes from nor who it belongs to.
John
Thanks. Maybe a planter lives here, or a hunter of some sort.
Narrator
In a jungle of this sort, you don't have to hunt. Wait around. The animals will come to you. So we'll just sit here and wait.
John
Is there a phone, do you think?
Narrator
Thousand miles from civilization.
John
It looks so neat and homely. Wouldn't be surprised if there's a refrigerator, tv and the milk delivered every morning.
Narrator
Well, whoever it is, he'll have heard of the McKinley expedition to be able to guide us back. I'm a university professor. Leave this sort of stuff to Davy Crockett.
John
Davy Crockett never got lost in the Amazon jungle. If he had, he'd have thought twice about wearing that coonskin hat of his.
Narrator
Notice something?
John
No. You need a shade.
Narrator
The water, it's ice cold. Maybe you were right about that refrigerator. You know, there's something screwy about all this. Neat and tidy. So it can't be an Indian. They've been with the McKinley expedition three months now. But we haven't heard of any white men around these parts. How did this place get here? Grow overnight, maybe?
John
A film set for an epic 2000 miles up the Amazon in Technicolor or Headhunters I have known made me to.
Narrator
Somebody coming.
Sammy
Say, what are you doing here? How did you get here?
Narrator
Well, you see, it was like this. My wife and I were with the McKinley expedition. Birds, butterflies, things like that. In the upper reaches of the Amazon. Well, we got lost. You know how it is. Missed camp and found ourselves in a walking tour. Good luck would have it, we happen to hit here.
Sammy
Good luck.
Narrator
Don't mind us arriving here. After all, it probably saved our lives.
Sammy
Well, you better go again. It's not safe around here.
Narrator
Not safe?
Sammy
Indians. We've had a lot of trouble with the Indians.
Narrator
We haven't? Our camp can't be so far from here.
John
We only walked an hour or two.
Narrator
Yeah, we're not explorers. We don't take naturally to this sort of thing. Well, if you could tell us what direction our camp's in, you'd better wait.
Sammy
Wait?
Narrator
But you just said it.
Sammy
Wait till my friend gets back he's used to this jungle. He'll tell me you what to do.
Narrator
Well, thanks. Thanks, Mr. Brazely.
Sammy
Name's Brazely. Won't you sit down?
Narrator
Thanks.
John
Thanks.
Narrator
Quite a setup you have here. We didn't know any white people were around here. You live and learn, don't you?
Sammy
Yeah. You get here by yourself, did you? I mean, the people with you, they don't know where you've gone? No.
Narrator
Saw a butterfly we hadn't seen before, and we gave chase. Well, you know, the excitement of the hunt. Next thing, we look around and Powie lost.
John
We didn't even have a gun, so we couldn't let off a shot for them to come and find us. I wanted to stay where we were, but John said walk, so we walked. So we're here.
Sammy
My friend should be here any moment.
Narrator
You're a planner, Hunter, explorer, that sort of thing?
Sammy
Yeah, that sort of thing. Maybe I better fix your drink. We've got call us. You stay here. No matter what happens, you stay here.
Rocky Fortune
Sure, sure.
Sammy
I'm going in back of the house. If either of your fire follow me in through that door, you'll have your head shot off. Get me? Shut up. I'm not fooling.
Narrator
Whatever you say.
Sammy
I'll be back. And when I get back, you'll be here. Understand? Well, well, well.
Narrator
Cheerful customer. Of course, after he said that, there's only one thing to do.
Rocky Fortune
John.
John
John. Don't you dare go near that door.
Narrator
I've got to find out. Maybe he's from Mars and he'll be sitting on a couple of flying saucers in there.
John
He who laughs last laughs on the other side of his face.
Narrator
I laugh all over, and right now I'm not laughing particularly. Threats get me riled.
John
Of course, you can't help wondering, can you?
Narrator
That's my girl. Now let's see. Maybe if I get up to the door, I could get me a look through the keyhole. If he comes back, I'll be tying my shoelace. Mr. Brazely. Just tying my shoelace, that's fine.
Sammy
I can understand how difficult it must be for you.
Narrator
Difficult?
Sammy
You're wearing riding boots and they don't lace up.
Narrator
No wonder I couldn't find them. Now look, Mr. Brazely, this is a friendly visit.
Sammy
Friends don't do what they're told not to do. Sit down.
Narrator
And you look here, Brazely.
Sammy
This is a America in the Amazon jungle. The man with the guns, the bot. Sit down.
Narrator
I'm not going to.
John
John, Sit down.
Narrator
Two against one. That Ruled me out. What now, Brazely? Do we all sit staring at that gun?
Rocky Fortune
Yep.
Sammy
Any movement and the gun will go off. You know there's no questions asked in the Amazon. Man, that jungle buries so fast, I shoot you. The both of you. And all I gotta do is leave your bodies outside. Three, four minutes. Not a trace. Not a single trick. Ah, friend's coming. Now he'll know what to do with you.
Narrator
If it's all the same to you, we can take a walk. We got lost coming here. We'll lose ourselves going back even faster.
Sammy
You'll stay here. You won't walk any place. Wouldn't be surprised if you never did get back.
Narrator
What's going on here? We didn't get here on purpose. Hey, that's a helicopter. Hey, Gene, that's a helicopter landing. Out.
Sammy
Stay where you are. Sit down.
Narrator
What's a helicopter doing here?
Sammy
You'll find out. At least I don't think you will. Not when my friends got through with you. He's the one gives the orders. If he says shoot you, I shoot.
Narrator
Nice playmates. Nice friends. Get lost in what happens?
Sammy
Get shot.
Judge
Die.
Narrator
You bluffing?
Judge
That captain's paid up a bitchy, won't it? Hello, hello. What have we got here, Brazy?
Sammy
I'm glad you got back, Mr. Cowson. Not only has the launching buzzer gone, but these two birds have called in as well.
Judge
Called in?
Narrator
Seems they're lost.
Sammy
Seems there's some sort of exploration over the waves. Seems we got here by mistake a lot.
Judge
How long ago did the buzzer sound?
Sammy
Two, three minutes ago.
Judge
Well, that gives us time to settle these two first. So you're lost, eh?
Narrator
See here, I don't know who you stand over types are, but I'm not being pushed around by anybody. You maybe have the upper hand now, but right soon the McKinley boys are coming looking for us. And if you're thinking of letting that gun off, a shot will only bring him quicker, that's all.
Judge
Oh, that's the outfit I saw, McKinley. Yeah, heard about you. Didn't know you were around these parts though.
Narrator
You know now?
Judge
Sure, sure, there's a hill between you and your friends. And this. You must have walked right around it. Shots don't carry round hills. And as for them coming looking for you, I never yet met a white man could track through this jungle. So sort of puts you out on a limp.
Sammy
Yeah, I didn't quite know what to do with them, Mr. Calton. I guess they got in when I was in the back room. Buzzer went Off. And when I came back, they were sneaking up. So I drew my gun, held them till you came.
Judge
Right. Only one thing to do with them. Get rid of them, but fast.
Sammy
Yeah, I thought that'd be it.
Judge
Yeah, but not too fast, Bracelet. We've got to consider these things now. Being alone here, it gets lonesome. Female company might be just what we need.
Narrator
Oh yeah, I see what you mean.
Judge
Nice girl. Friendly. I shouldn't be surprised.
Narrator
Lay off.
Sammy
You lay off, mister. Shooting to me is no more than swatting flies and hot headed fools. Them I shoot easiest of all.
Judge
You're going to be shot anyway if you want to make it. Now, come on. No. Look, Bracey, I don't want to make it worse for him than need be. After all, he's not an animal. Go stand in the doorway, mister. Looking out. Make it in the back. Easiest for all. That way.
Sammy
Start, mister.
Narrator
Bluff never did worry me. You've got the gun. You've got me wide open. Go ahead, shoot outside.
Rocky Fortune
You.
Sammy
No.
Judge
Sorry. Try shooting the girl instead. Bravely expect they fight like cat and dog. But harm comes to his wife and he'll do the noble act. Go on, Brazely, shoot the girl.
Sammy
No.
Narrator
Okay. But I still think you're bluffing, John. Bluffing, Gene? Maybe they found gold. Something like that. But that won't make them go as far as shooting. Not actual shooting.
Judge
Well, game of poker, huh? With all the bluffing? If it is bluff on our side. Go stand in the doorway, mister, and we'll see. Go on. Open it, mister. The idea is you die outside, not in.
Rocky Fortune
Go on, Bracery.
Judge
Blast him out of that door with your bluff. Go on.
Sammy
Yeah, yeah, sure.
John
Mr. Brainsley.
Sammy
What is it?
John
Don't bother shooting him. Get to know me better, huh? I'm quite a girl. Run, Brigg, run.
Sammy
Come back here.
Judge
You.
Narrator
Come back. Get him.
Sammy
Bracely. What hit me? Give me that gun.
Judge
Give it to me.
Sammy
Over here.
Judge
Come back here, you.
Sammy
Come back, you fool.
Judge
Brazely.
Sammy
You big fool. He hit me. Well, something hit me. Hey, did you get him?
Judge
It got clean away, thanks to you.
Sammy
Oh. Oh. He still got the girl.
Judge
Got the girl? What's the use of the girl with him getting away?
Sammy
Oh, I don't know. It hurts worse than an earthquake.
Judge
You're about as useful as rats under the house.
Sammy
I didn't know she was gonna slug me. Boy, am I gonna do some sluggin back here. Give me that gun, Mr. Callison. She's gonna be awful sorry.
Judge
Wake up to yourself, Brazy. He's out there in the Jungle. Sooner or later he's going to contact his party. That means they come back here.
Sammy
Oh, yeah, so it does. So it does.
Judge
It'll be bad enough them coming here, let alone finding the woman killed.
Sammy
Yeah, I hadn't thought of it.
Judge
Hadn't we be in enough trouble without having murder on our hands?
Sammy
We can't let her go now, not knowing what she does. If you hadn't wasted so much time getting to the door, he wouldn't have got away.
Judge
I'm the boss, praisely. Orders and beeps come strictly from me.
Narrator
Yes, Mr. Calliton.
Judge
I say you do.
Sammy
Yes, Mr. Caledon.
Judge
Now he's lost. But that doesn't mean he hasn't got a chance of getting back to his base. I'll take an hour, hour and a half maybe, walking straight there. Allowing for losing his way, say another half hour. Two hours. Two hours there, one back three hours. And we've got an hour 50 to do our job and get. Give us an hour at least. Hours lead should be enough.
Sammy
Yeah, 50 till it gets here. But what we gotta do'll take two days.
Judge
Yeah, maybe he won't make it, but we can take the risk. Looks like you could still be a hostage, lady.
Narrator
In two days.
Sammy
Going fast. They could get the police.
Rocky Fortune
The copter.
Judge
Oh, how dumb can you get? Here's the gun, Basie. I've got another in the copter. Hold her. Don't let her out of your sight. Keep her covered and shoot if you have to. I hope it's not too dark to spot him. I'll pick him up and pick him off from the capture in no time. Seems like all our troubles are over.
Sammy
I hope so. Seems I'm the man calling the tune again, lady. Seems you'll have to be nice to me. Nothing to say, huh? Oh, well, you'll do plenty of yelling in a bit. The dame who knocks me around with a vase is asking for plenty of trouble.
Narrator
Getting dark inside here.
Sammy
The oil lamp needs fixing. Not that I hold it against you. That's pretty smart. Not quite smart enough. I like my women with a bit.
Rocky Fortune
Of fight in them.
Sammy
Oh, now Mr. Caledon's out of the.
Narrator
Way and your husband's out of the way.
Sammy
Just you and me.
Narrator
You be good and do as you're told.
Sammy
I'll do more than smash a vase over your head.
Rocky Fortune
What's that?
Sammy
Who's that outside holding your bluff again, Brazely? You again?
Judge
Yeah.
Narrator
Coming out to get me.
Sammy
Quick dot that lamp.
John
You do your own Jenny.
Sammy
Well, you don't blow that Lamp out. I'll blow you out. Don't waste time turning it down. Pick it up and blow over the.
Judge
Top of the grass.
Sammy
Funnel.
Judge
That's better.
Sammy
Coming out to get me. Bravely.
Narrator
Quiet now. Get him as he comes to the door. What are you doing?
Sammy
I'm coming, Dean.
Narrator
What happened? I heard a crash. You all right?
John
He gave me the lamp. He said, pick it up. So I picked it up and I hit him over the head with it.
Narrator
Nice work, kid. You'll do all right.
John
I think so.
Narrator
Fine. Look, I'll have to tie this guy up and then I'll attend to you. Rope, Wire. That'll do fine. That coil over there. Wire. Wonder what copper wire's doing here.
John
Here you are.
Narrator
Thanks. Saw Kellerton taking off in his copter. Going looking for me? I suppose as soon as this character's trussed up, we go see what's in that back room. Funny. You sit up here. Okay, honey. We'll soon be out of here. Crude, but if he struggles, he'll cut his wrists and legs to ribbon, so I guess he won't. Help yourself to his gun and all set. Come on. Take ourselves a look.
John
What if the other man comes back?
Narrator
Copters aren't exactly quiet. We'll hear him. Come on. Well, what sort of a setup do you reckon this is?
John
Like radio. A bit like a radio station or something.
Sammy
Oh, say.
Narrator
Expensive equipment. Whoever brought this all the way here did so for a pretty important reason.
John
Talking to somebody over a distance.
Narrator
I wouldn't say that.
John
Those men, when you'd gone, they were talking something about it getting here in an hour and 50 minutes.
Narrator
That's so now. I wonder what it could be. Could be anything. Can't see a microphone.
John
There's a sort of TV screen over here.
Narrator
So there is. It isn't tv. It's radar working, but it doesn't seem to be picking anything up. Craziest joint I ever saw. No good wasting time here. Not being scientific, it doesn't mean a thing. We'll get back to the other room, hide our friend and await developments.
John
I've had enough developments. Can't we go back to our camp?
Narrator
How can we? We don't know the way.
John
We've got the revolver now, and we know there's a hill in the way. If we walk over the hill firing the revolver every now and then, they're bound to hear us.
Narrator
Look, Jean, we don't know what's going on here, but it must be pretty important. It's our duty to find out.
John
Sort of men always Hide behind duty. All I mean is they're boys at heart and can't resist.
Narrator
Cop is coming in enough time to hide. Brazely. Room's dark and there's still some light outside with the junk caliber. You get over there in that corner and keep quiet. I'll hide up behind the door. Can't know I'm back. Surprise on our side, anyway. And a gun. Come on, Kelleton. Come on in and see what Santa Claus has got for you.
John
Hubie K. Careful. I haven't got another lamp to break over his head.
Narrator
I'll be careful. He's coming.
Judge
Raisley.
Narrator
Raisley doesn't live here anymore. Recognize me in one. And while you're dizzling, see if he can touch the ceiling. That's a good boy. Why, honey, I've got another pig to truss up.
John
The funniest thing. I've got the wildest desire to tickle him.
Narrator
Playing with dangerous animals isn't fun. Thanks. Hands behind your back, Mr. Kellerton. Hold the gun, Gene. Now, while we're about it, Kellerton, you might as well tell us what gives around this direction. What's the game? What's arriving here in one hour, 50 or less? Now about one hour 30. Okay? Okay. You don't have to talk unless you want to. I tell you what, though. We'll all stay here until whatever it is does arrive. Make yourself comfortable. Have a chair. Settle down, Gene. Looks like we've got quite a wait in front of us. 40 minutes. Going to talk, Mr. Kelton? All right, all right. We're in no hurry. By my watch, I may get four minutes. What's the matter, Mr. Keller? You don't mind my saying, sir, you look a little pale around the gills, Kind of nervous.
Judge
We better get out of here. We better all get out of here.
Narrator
Sure, sure, I'd like to. But why?
Sammy
What's going to happen?
Judge
The whole place is going up, that's what.
Narrator
Interesting.
John
I've got a feeling he knows what he's talking about. John, I think we'd better go.
Narrator
Sure, Gene. As soon as he tells us what is going to happen.
Judge
Look, something's gonna happen. Isn't that enough? It's gonna happen pretty soon. Let me get out of this dumb platoo.
Narrator
All you've gotta do is tell us what exactly you do expect. Not much time left.
Judge
I tell you, unless we get out fast, we'd all be blown sky high.
John
He's telling the truth. John, hadn't we better go?
Narrator
Sure, honey, you go. Mr. Kellet and I will stay here until he Decides to tow.
Judge
Oh, it's a rocket.
Narrator
Rockets in Batman.
Judge
There's a remote control radio. Pretty powerful. The army launched a rocket from Florida. We picked up a controlling wavelength from here. That rocket, instead of going back to its base when it should, will come straight on here. It's riding down a beam. A radio beam directed from here. Unless it's controlled, this is where it'll end.
Narrator
You mean you're trying to swipe an American rocket flying?
Judge
We have warhead Malat. If it hits here, your next stop is a billion miles away and you arrive in pizzas.
Narrator
There it is.
Judge
Hacket in the other room. A lever. Doesn't matter which way you pull it, so long as you do quick.
Narrator
Ask us ever what lever, which lever, where?
Judge
By the radar screen. Quick, man.
Sammy
Got it.
Narrator
Boy, things happen too fast for me around here. Come on, honey.
John
Where are we going?
Narrator
Matter so long as it's away from here. Come on. You too, Brazely. On your feet. Wow. And I think that might have been us instead of jungle. Get moving, you two. Outside. And no breaking away.
Sammy
Go on.
Narrator
When we open this door, it was to ask our way. From now on, I find a locked door, I leave it locked. I'm not curious about anything anymore. Well, you two, either you find our camp or we all starve. As for this place, I'll take the key. Somebody else can do the unlocking. A closing door finishes a story next week another key will open another door to another story. Mystery, romance or adventure all start when a door is unlocked by the key. Foreign.
