Rocky Jordan
Sunday is a big day on CBS. Still waiting in the wings to bring you a variety of entertainment are Rocky Jordan, Horace height, our Ms. Brooks, Evelyn Knight, the whistler and Red Skelton. Now Del Monte foods brings you a world of adventure with Rocky Jordan.
Madame Dulac
Offended Jordan. Offended Jordan, huh?
Rocky Jordan
I don't remember us meeting. No, sir, you have not met Fatim. But still we have business. Observe this, which is in my hand. Is it real? Almost assuredly. $1,000 bill. American money.
Madame Dulac
Now watch.
Rocky Jordan
I have turned same into two pieces. And the small piece I give to you. The other I keep myself. Oh, you're a magician. And you're going to put the pieces together again. In a way, effendi Jordan, you are correct. Both pieces can be yours if you will go to see Madame Dulaq. 16 Sharia Ramesses, second. Why pick on me? Because it is well known in Cairo that you are a man who for money would brave danger. Madame Dulac's home. Then, as soon as possible, Del Monte, the brand you trust flavor in so many good foods. Yes, Del Monte, the best liked brand of canned fruits and vegetables in the whole wide world, takes you now to the cafe Tambourine for another adventure with Rocky Jordan. The Cafe Tambourine in Cairo, gateway to the ancient east, where modern adventure and intrigue unfold against a backdrop of antiquity. Tonight's Rocky Jordan story. Madame Dulac's daughter, his name was Fatim. He'd stopped me walking through the muski bazaar, had given me half of a thousand dollar bill. American money. He'd said the other half would be mine if I dropped in on a Madame Dulaq for a grand. I figured it was worth looking into and the danger wouldn't begin until I said yes. 16. Sharia Ramsey, second was in the high rent district, a large two story white building that spelled money. Even before I could ring the bell, the door came open and an eager young girl dressed to leave stood there.
Madame Dulac
Hello.
Rocky Jordan
Hello.
Madame Dulac
Now let me see. Mama hired you to drive the limousine. No, Mama hired you to take her to carnic. No, Mama hired you to. Oh, of course. That's why. Hamar, someone to see Mama. Yes, Ms. Sandra and Hamar I'm leaving now. If Mr. Morrow calls, tell him I'll meet him at the track. Goodbye, cutie. Wish me lots of winners.
Rocky Jordan
You are Mr. Jordan. The Fatim said to expect you. This way, please. Hey, if she goes with a house, I take it Madame Dulac's daughter by a late marriage. 18 years of age, anxious to be older. That door, sir. The Madame is inside. You may go in. Thanks. The door opened into a bedroom. Madame Dulac's pale green walls, mahogany furniture short on the ornate. Madame du Lac herself was in bed, propped up with a couple of silken pillows.
Madame Dulac
Well, don't stand there in the doorway. There's a draft.
Rocky Jordan
I moved to the bed and got a closer look at her. Late 50s, early 60s. White skin, small features, strong chin. Deep set eyes with a lot of brightness in them. But it was the extra strong light of the candle before it burned out.
Madame Dulac
You have your half of the thousand dollar bill. The other half is on the table.
Rocky Jordan
There. It's yours. Just like that.
Madame Dulac
Shall we now talk about a more important matter?
Rocky Jordan
For a thousand dollars, I'll talk about anything.
Madame Dulac
You have seen my daughter?
Rocky Jordan
I ran into a light breeze in the other room, if that's who you mean.
Madame Dulac
Mr. Jordan, that girl has had everything. Schools in Switzerland, travel around the world.
Rocky Jordan
Books, art, music.
Madame Dulac
Now the only reading matter she is.
Rocky Jordan
Interested in is the racing form.
Madame Dulac
The only art, how to pick a winner. The only music, the trumpet call, signaling the horses to the post. She's gay, selfish, proud and obstinate. What she needs and has needed for a long time is a good thrashing.
Rocky Jordan
You see this.32 Colt automatic?
Madame Dulac
I found it in her room.
Rocky Jordan
She thinks it's cute to have a gun.
Madame Dulac
But that isn't all. The real problem is something else.
Rocky Jordan
A man. His name is Edward Merrill. He's an American from San Francisco. She's in love with him, or thinks she is. And he's no good for her. I want you to take her away from him.
Madame Dulac
I know, Sandra. I know of you. You were the kind of man who can do it.
Rocky Jordan
That's all. Yeah. All right, Madame Dulac, that should handle the prologue. Now let's get to the truth. You gave me the G note for a reason and a good one. If I take it, I'm going to earn it. I think I know how. Want to hear? By all means. All right. We'll start with that daughter of yours. You made her what she is, Madame Dulac, and you like it. You like her flamboyance and her excesses. Because you'd like to have them yourself. You say she needs a thrashing. You wouldn't take to her backside with a powder puff. The way I look at it is this. You're not really sore at her, you're worried about it. You think she's in real trouble with this Eddie Marrow and you want me to get her out. Only that gets me into trouble with Marrow. And I earned that G you gave me right down to the last dime. No thanks.
Madame Dulac
So you were going to turn your back on this? On this involvement of my daughter with Tony Bristol.
Rocky Jordan
Tony Bristol? Edward Merrill's real name.
Madame Dulac
You know him and had some involvement with him yourself in the United States.
Rocky Jordan
This I found out before I had you summoned to me. Yeah, sure I know him. Tried to run me out of business in San Francisco. You still owe him something. You can see the wisdom, Mr. Jordan, of my selecting you. You will help me then? We'll see.
Madame Dulac
You will find him at the Cairo racetrack.
Rocky Jordan
He has a special box. Sandra will be with him. Thanks. Well, it figured to be worth looking into. Twenty minutes later I was making my way through the Jockey Club at the track looking for Eddie Marrow's bo. I found it with no trouble. Sandra was there, looking at the end of a race through binoculars. Eddie was there and so was Eddie's right hand man from San Francisco. Happy Bride and Harem King. And it's a photo finish. Please hold on to your pocket. Yeah. Shark. Well, well, Jordan. It's like old times.
Madame Dulac
Tell me Eddie, which horse? Horse did we have?
Rocky Jordan
The winner, baby.
Madame Dulac
But it's a photo finish, darling. Well, look who's here. Hello, cute stuff.
Rocky Jordan
Oh, you two met? Yeah, that's right. Her mother's house, earlier today.
Madame Dulac
Uh huh. You're awfully nice. What's your name?
Rocky Jordan
His name's Jordan, but he's an also ran and don't forget it.
Madame Dulac
Well, now that I get a better look at him, I don't like him. He looks too moral to me.
Rocky Jordan
We've got some unfinished business from San Francisco, Eddie. We gonna take it up here. I'm not sore, Jordan. The old days are behind me. I'm in Cairo to have fun and you have got a deal on. It's the only way you've ever had fun. He's got some use for you, Sandra. It's something you're not gonna like.
Madame Dulac
Of course he's got some use for me and I am going to like it. He loves me. Mr. Jordan, we're going to be married.
Rocky Jordan
Does your mother know we're going to.
Madame Dulac
Elope as soon as the meet closes in.
Rocky Jordan
Surprises result of the third race. The winner, Harem King, is the win.
Madame Dulac
You did have harem king, £50 at 11 to 1. Four wins yesterday, three the day before. I'll be right back.
Rocky Jordan
They're getting a lot of winners, huh? Oh, enough now. Go on. Beat it, Jordan. You're not wanted. What are your figures making you so lucky? Sunspots or maybe a system. I'd like to hear about it next time. That fist goes right through you, Jordan. Blow. Yeah, I'm going.
Madame Dulac
Shock.
Rocky Jordan
One thing more, Eddie. Whatever happened to Eunice, huh? Last time I knew you, you were good. Mountain. Leave Eunice out of this, Jordan. I just thought I'd ask. He was a nice kid. A lot of love for you. Listen, wise guy, you keep pressing me like this and you're going to end up horizontal. Now beat it. Well, something was up that was clear. I was struck by the way Eddie reacted when I mentioned Eunice. She'd always been a big love of his. As I left the Jockey Club, my mind began to form a picture of him. Tall, slim girl, not too smart, but a day with a kind of strange appeal. Then suddenly my eyes were telling my mind something else. They were telling me that standing by the cab stand, tall and slim, dark glasses covering her eyes, net veil covering her face, was the woman in question. I moved up fast and grabbed her arm. Is Eddie know you're at the track unit?
Madame Dulac
Huh? I don't know.
Rocky Jordan
You raise the glasses. Rocky Jordan, San Francisco. Remember? Eddie or Tony Bristol, if you like. And I were just talking about you.
Madame Dulac
Does he know I'm in town? Does he know I'm here? Rocky?
Rocky Jordan
Come on. Get in the cab, Eunice. Drive it around. Cabby. What's Eddie doing in Cairo, Eunice? Making a pile off the races. How?
Madame Dulac
I don't know what he's doing.
Rocky Jordan
You can fix one race maybe, but you can't fix four. One day, three the day before, and I don't know how many before that. What's his angle? That's a nice wedding ring you're wearing.
Madame Dulac
I like it.
Rocky Jordan
You and Eddie still married?
Madame Dulac
Why shouldn't we be?
Rocky Jordan
What's that song and dance you gave me about marrying Sandra Dulac as soon as the meet's over?
Madame Dulac
I don't know.
Rocky Jordan
Can't marry her after the meet unless he wants to play with bigamy. Even Eddie's too smart for that. So Sandra's getting a ride.
Madame Dulac
That's her problem.
Rocky Jordan
What's it all about? How does it tie in with Eddie's?
Madame Dulac
Big winnings 342 Shardia King George. Driver. I got nothing to say to you, Rocky.
Rocky Jordan
All right, I'll work it out another way. Where's Eddie staying?
Madame Dulac
Hotel North Africa.
Rocky Jordan
Pull up, cabbie. I'll get out of here.
Madame Dulac
Rocky.
Rocky Jordan
What?
Madame Dulac
Don't tell Eddie I'm in, Tom. Please don't, Rocky. No matter what.
Rocky Jordan
Why?
Madame Dulac
It won't be good for me, that's why.
Rocky Jordan
At night I dropped in on the cocktail lounge at the Hotel North Africa. See if I could pick up any stray bits of information. All I got for my pains was a big bar bill. But passing by the main desk on the way out of the hotel, I ran into luck. A little guy, double breasted suit, gray suede gloves, racing form under his arm. Was having words with a desk clerk. Good evening. I would like to leave this package for Mr. Morrow. Of course, Mr. Emmer. And I believe Mr. Morrow has left an envelope for me once again. Yes, here it is, sir. Good. Thank you, young man.
Madame Dulac
Good night.
Rocky Jordan
Kramer slipped the envelope from Marrow into his inside coat pocket and left the hotel. I followed. Half a block down the street, under the glare of a street lamp, he stopped, took the envelope out of his pocket, removed the contents. A pack of Egyptian pound notes. That's when I moved up to him fast. The light, mister. Oh, yes, of course. Here, I have a lighter. Your cigarette is lit. Oh, yeah. Thanks. Just a minute, Kramer. We have met. I understand you got a great way to beat the horses. Who are you, young man? Why should that matter? Just say I'm right. You have got a way to beat the horses. All it takes is a guy like Eddie Marrow and a young girl, say, Sandra Dulac. Really? That money you got there, track winnings. I do not believe I know what you are talking about. Now, good night, young man. He put the money into his pocket and walked away. I started to follow, but I didn't get three steps. Bad man is to follow strangers, Jordan. Unless they're women or Shark. That's when my conversation stopped. Shark's fist steamed down at the right side of my jaw and my eyes began looking at each other. It swung again. I was rolling in the gutter. By the time I picked myself up, Shark was gone. What was more important, the little guy named Kramer was gone too. And with him went the secret of how he was beating the horses. How he and Eddie Marrow were using Madame Dac's daughter, Sandra. Del Monte Foods is presenting tonight's adventure with Rocky Jordan. It's usually true when you have roast on Sunday. There'll be leftovers on Monday and maybe Tuesday and Wednesday too.
Madame Dulac
And here's something else that's true, Larry. There's nothing that livens up the flavor of leftover meat or cold meat anytime like Del Monte catsup.
Rocky Jordan
That's because Del Monte catsup is such a zesty, lively catsup. A catsup that really gives other foods a great big lift.
Madame Dulac
And what's more, I've noticed Del Monte catsup has a kind of stuff spiced tomato flavor. Men, folks want the kind of flavor that's a real friend to plain food.
Rocky Jordan
And speaking of friends, vine ripe red tomatoes and fragrant spices never had such a friend in catsup as that marvelous pineapple vinegar Del Monte uses. It's extra fine to coax out extra flavor. Believe me, the way pineapple vinegar brings out rich, tangy, spiced tomato goodness is a pleasure to taste. And this wonderful vinegar is exclusive with Del Monte. No other catsup has it.
Madame Dulac
Well, I know that thousands and thousands of women out here in the west wouldn't think of buying any other brand. They like Del Monte flavor, and they like Del Monte's economical price.
Rocky Jordan
So remember, for the zestiest, liveliest catsup ever, be sure your next bottle is Del Monte catsup. And now we take you back to Cairo and tonight's Rocky Jordan story. Madame Dulac's daughter. Well, it all began when Madame Dulac wanted her daughter Sandra, out of trouble. Trouble being a little concoction mixed by Eddie Merrill, the ingredients of which still remained unknown. But Little Man Kramer, who had the pleasant task of picking up envelopes stuffed with money, seemed worth talking to. Talk One was a failure. It ended up with me in the gutter and Kramer flying the coupe. But I got another chance the next day at the races. I found him in the grandstand adding figures in a small book. Having a big day, Kramer? Oh, the young man from last evening. You know, I've been thinking about what you said to me last night. Good. But I still do not understand what you mean. If you'd have stuck around a little longer, I'd have been more blunt. Well, feel free now to express yourself. What was in that package you left for Eddie Marrow at the desk at the Hotel North Africa?
Madame Dulac
Books.
Rocky Jordan
Books, Young man. I'm a book dealer. I have a shop in the Sultana Square. That envelope Eddie Marrow left for you with the money payments for the book, it must come pretty high. Eddie Marrow's envelope to you had at least 500 pounds in it. Rare book. Tell me, young man, where did you ever get the idea I know how to beat the horses? Let's say a birdie told me, huh? Female. The horses are now entering the track for the fifth race. Great. Where are you going, young man? The race is to do some checking up on you. My first name is Carl. That should make it easier for you. Oh, thanks. And please, if you discover that I'm doing something criminal, inform me. I should be most delighted to know. Kramer was like glass, but he was worth checking. I spent three hours at it and got nothing. That's when I decided to visit eddie Merrill's wife. Eunice. 342 Sherry of King George was a duplex stuck next to a vacant lot. Eunice's place was the lower. I rapped on the door. I should have stayed in. Shots came from inside her apartment. I shook at the door, but it was locked, so I kicked it in. There on the floor in the living room lay Eunice, real dead. That's when I heard the sound of a large automobile pulling away. I moved to the back window and looked out. I didn't see the automobile, but I did see something else. A female figure scurrying down the sidewalk away from the house. It was Madame Dulac herself. And for her age, she was running in high gear. Well, I took out after her and just about a block later, grabbed the back of her coat. All right, all right. Slow down.
Madame Dulac
It's your Mr. Jordan. I didn't know who was following me.
Rocky Jordan
Give me your purse, Madam Dulac. You heard me.
Madame Dulac
What are you looking for?
Rocky Jordan
Yes.32 Colt automatic. Thought you set it with Sandra's gun. Looks to me like it's yours. Clip's empty now. Empty clip and a dead Eunice. What does that add up to, Madam Dulac?
Madame Dulac
Perhaps you will tell me, Dr. Jordan.
Rocky Jordan
A better job of telling will come from Captain Sam Sabaya, Cairo Police. Come on.
Madame Dulac
To the police station, I presume.
Rocky Jordan
Anxious.
Madame Dulac
Cold out here in the street. We might as well be where it's warm.
Rocky Jordan
Just a minute. Who was in the car? I heard pull away.
Madame Dulac
Car?
Rocky Jordan
There was no car. That's a lie. Tell me something, Madam Dulaq. What's your first name?
Madame Dulac
My first name? It's Olga.
Rocky Jordan
Come on, Madame Du Lac. We're not going to the police station. We're going to your house. You are changeable, Mr. Jordan.
Madame Dulac
Would you please tell me why.
Rocky Jordan
Sure. The initials on this gun are not OD for Olga Dulac. They're SD for Sandra Dulac. Sandra's gun. After all, I'll give you a two to one it was she who drove away in that car. I'll give you three to one you're trying to cover up for her, taking me up on her? I thought not. Come on, let's go talk to Sandra.
Madame Dulac
All right, Mr. Jordan, what you say is true. Mamaya's trying to protect me, but she has no reason to.
Rocky Jordan
What does that mean?
Madame Dulac
I didn't kill Eunice like you seem to think. Yes, I was at her house talking to her. After I left, I heard shots. That's when my ma drove up in the limousine, assumed I'd fired the gun, took it from me and made me drive away in the car. That is true, Mr. Jordan.
Rocky Jordan
There are no bullets in the gun. How do you explain that?
Madame Dulac
It never had any bullets in it. I've never even fired a gun in my life.
Rocky Jordan
You use it as a paperweight.
Madame Dulac
No, I don't. I just carry it because it looks.
Rocky Jordan
Good, like a mink cape.
Madame Dulac
I didn't kill her.
Rocky Jordan
How would anyone know if you ever told the truth? You know, to some people, it also looks good to tell a lot of clever lies. Whether you're lying or not, Ballistics will tell the truth.
Madame Dulac
Well, maybe it'll prove I did do it. I don't know. I won't be stuck.
Rocky Jordan
All right, let's table that for a while. Tell me something else. How does Eddie Marrow's racetrack deal work?
Madame Dulac
He's got a system. He's lucky.
Rocky Jordan
Oh, sure.
Madame Dulac
All I know is that three or four times a day I cash winning tickets for him.
Rocky Jordan
And what about him? How many does he cash?
Madame Dulac
None. I cash them all. I like to. Or at least I used to like to.
Rocky Jordan
And you like to buy the tickets, too?
Madame Dulac
He buys them.
Rocky Jordan
What about Carl Kramer? How does he fit? Carl Kramer?
Madame Dulac
I don't know him. Oh, stop it, will you? I can't even think anymore. Let her alone. Please, Mr. Jordan.
Rocky Jordan
He is very tired. And Eunice is very dead. Sandra. What? Did Eddie ever tell you about Eunice? How'd you know about her? Why were you at her place?
Madame Dulac
I overheard Eddie and Shark talking about her.
Rocky Jordan
I saw her yesterday. He said Eddie didn't know she was in town and she was scared he'd find out. Yes, he found out she was in town. Madame Dula?
Madame Dulac
Yes, Emma?
Rocky Jordan
Captain Sapaya of the police is on the phone. He wishes to talk to Miss Sandra.
Madame Dulac
About the murder, no doubt. What shall I do, Mr. Jordan?
Rocky Jordan
Suddenly, 80 marrow is a better bet. I'll talk to Sabia, Madame Du luck.
Madame Dulac
Thank you, Mr. Duke.
Rocky Jordan
This way, sir. Hello, Sam. Jordan. I did not expect to hear your voice. Yeah, I don't. I wanted to speak to Sandra Dulac or her mother about a very important matter. Eddie Marrow's wife was shot to death in her apartment this evening. One of three people seems to be the guilty one. Three? But Madame du Lac and Sander was seen in the vicinity of the crime. Oh, I can vouch for them, Sam. Look at that third person. He looks like it to me. Indeed, Jordan, the third person identified by three irreproachable witnesses is you. Me? So I suggest you come to headquarters immediately, or I shall have to send some men to apprehend you. Oh, sorry, Sam. Maybe you better be looking for number four. That's what I'm going to be doing. Fifteen minutes later, I told the chambermaid on the third floor of the Hotel North Africa that I was Mr. Merrill's brother. Would she please let me into the room? She would and did. Inside. The first thing I looked for were the books from Carl Kramer. There were half a dozen in the room. Plain, ordinary books. I felt real disappointed, like a pickpocket in a nudist colony. But it wasn't over yet. I got an idea how to tear the covers off, which I did. Book five made it worth the effort. Lodged in between the cardboards of the COVID were racetrack win tickets. 50 pound win tickets on every horse in the third race. Didn't make any sense to me. Then I saw the date on the tickets. Day after tomorrow. Suddenly, it all made a lot of sense. I knew Marrow and Kramer's secret are the sure fire way to beat the hors. In just a moment, Rocky Jordan returns to conclude tonight's story. The good old summertime is still a long way off, but if you'd like a preview of it right now, I can't think of a better way than to suggest that you try a nice big glass of Del Monte tomato juice.
Madame Dulac
That's a good suggestion, Larry. Del Monte tomato juice is so natural tasting, you could close your eyes and imagine yourself in the middle of August eating sunny, warm tomatoes right off the vine.
Rocky Jordan
Del Monte certainly has captured the genuine article in fresh tasting, natural tasting tomato flavor. No two ways about that. It's so truly refreshing, one would almost think that the man who invented the word appetizer had Del Monte tomato juice in mind.
Madame Dulac
Well, I know that for making appetites sit up and take notice, you just can't do better than Del Monte's fresh, tempting flavor. And that goes for morning, noon or night.
Rocky Jordan
It's a Downright satisfying between meal drink too. So why not enjoy this fresh tasting, natural tasting. Tomato flavor often so good for everybody. Buy several cans of Del Monte tomato juice next time you're shopping and see how fine it tastes. Back now to Rocky Jordan for the conclusion of tonight's story. I was standing in Eddie Marrow's hotel room. The win tickets for the day after tomorrow in my hand. Marrow and Kramer's secret, how to beat the horses the sure fire way. Wasn't their secret alone anymore. Well, Jordan, it saves me the trouble of going out looking for you. Just brushing up a little of my reading. Eddie, I know how you beat the horses. Real foolproof. Except it's somewhat illegal. So's murder. You were counterfeiting win tickets. Kramer made up the batch ahead of time. A counterfeit win ticket for every horse in the race. No matter which horse won, you won. And Sandra fronted for you. She cashed the phony tickets and never knew. I don't want to talk about that. There's something else between us. Yeah, I guess there is. Eunice. You got an alibi. A real good one. I loved her. Is that what gave her the shakes? She knew I wanted her away from Cairo until the job was done. She knew that. If I knew she was in town, I'd have slapped her around and sent her home. I guess that's one way to show love. It's my way. That alibi won't stand up in court. This one will. Both Shock and I were in the bar, the Hotel North Africa at the time Eunice was killed. And the house stick and six other people can prove it. Yes, I made a mistake. You sure did. The police say you were there when Eunice was killed. Do they? Were you there by yourself? Look, you got revenge on the brain, Eddie. I'm gonna even up Eunice's killing. Were you there alone, Jordan? Ease off, Eddie. Your fuse is gonna. Don't get nervous. You didn't kill her, Jordan. You had no reason. But someone else did. Someone you're covering for. And her name is Sandra Dulac. Eddie was half crazy with the idea of revenge. He turned and bolted for the door to find Sandra. And I moved to stop him. I grabbed him as he opened the door and pulled him back into the room. That didn't cool him any. He swung from the floor and put me on the side of the face. And it began. He was throwing with all his strength. And when he picked up a heavy ashtray and started hitting me with that, I began to hear bells. It was the only Eddie Wasn't paying any attention. He was real busy. I was trying to keep him busy. Then when he lifted a marble book in and went for my head. I figured it was time to put a stop to the fun. I threw a right foot into his face, stumbled backwards, rolled over the telephone table and slumped to the floor. The phone went down with him and the receiver came off the hook.
Madame Dulac
Eddie, it's Shock.
Rocky Jordan
I got a bullet in me.
Madame Dulac
Listen.
Rocky Jordan
What is it? Shock?
Madame Dulac
Kramer. Eddie Kramer.
Rocky Jordan
What about him? Shock. What about Kramer? Hang up the telephone, young man. I shall tell you about myself first hands. I don't think you have to, Kramer. I know already. You killed Eunice cuz she never wanted Eddie in a deal with you. You were afraid she tipped a scheme. I had no other course but to shoot her. Even at the time she was preparing to telephone the police. I found her standing by the telephone just as you are now. Now it's my turn. It seems so, young man. No, Kramer. It's your turn. Eddie. All right, Eddie. You squared things.
Madame Dulac
Yeah.
Rocky Jordan
I guess you and I are even up too. Give me the gun. It's no good to anyone anymore. There. You want to phone Sapaya or shall I? I'll do it, Rocky. It's all over for me now. Well, Sam took over his men turned up Shark in Kramer's hotel room. Still alive. He was carted over to the police hospital. I went over to Madam Duck's house and filled her and Sandra in the on the details, Sandra was cleared. Madame Dak got her daughter back. Ruffled but wiser. Me, I've still got a problem. Remember the two halves of the thousand dollar bill? Anybody get a piece of scotch tape for the finest in tomato flavor. Enjoy the whole family of Del Monte tomato products.
Madame Dulac

Lee Brand was a happy man. There was a spring to his step as he crossed the front terrace of his palatial summer home at Carmel. At the door, he paused to look back over the vast estate, silently congratulating himself on the business deal he had just completed. It was the biggest thing that had ever happened to him. Big enough to provide all the money he would ever need. It would make it possible for him to drop his business identity with the gang in the city as Lee Brand and maintained social life here at Carmel as Julius Belmont, wealthy retired businessman and the man his daughter had always believed him to be. But as Brand ran through the whole story in his mind, he suddenly realized it was actually Paul Elliot's story right from the beginning. And that was on a July night a little less than two years ago when Brand and one of his men were driving across the Sacramento River. Their headlights picked up the figure of a man standing. Standing on the railing. Hey, look at that guy. Is he gonna jump, huh? Good Lord. Speed up, Dave. Pull over there fast. Hey.
Madame Dulac
Hey. Don't wait.
Rocky Jordan
He's waving at us. Yeah, Maybe he isn't going up. There he goes. No, attaway was just goodbye. Guy must be screwy when he gets. Get going, Dave. Down the ramp to the river. We'll pull him out. What?
Madame Dulac
Come on.
Rocky Jordan
Hurry. Hurry. Come on. Come on. You're okay, buddy. What? Where am. You're in my apartment. We pulled you out of the river. You decided to take a little swim, remember? Oh, well, I guess I should thank you gentlemen for saving my life. It was his idea, not mine. His? The name's Lee Brand. Yours? Why, it's. Oh, what's the difference? It's Elliot. Paul Elliot. Any relation to the Elliots? Yes, yes. The favorite son. The black sheep they always thought was so white. You weren't giving yourself much of a chance to change. Not that way. I wasn't looking for chances. I'm not a gambler, Mr. Brann. I wonder, just how bad is it, Elliot, Anything a little time and money could. Men. Look, look, you pulled me out. I said thanks, even though I don't appreciate it. But you don't look like Santa Claus. Mr. Brand and your friend. Listen, we can push you back in, brother. In fact, I think it's. Come on, Dave. What's there to hide? Elliot, Your life history would have been all over the front pages tomorrow. Yes, I suppose. Only when you get into a Jam. Over 50,000 in funds that belong to your own family. You don't like to talk about it? No. That's why you do. Well, I asked you a question a moment ago. How much money? How much time? I mean, to get things straightened out all the way. That's not that easy. Besides, what's the catch? No catch. You see, I am a gambler, Elliot. It's my business. I've never seen a situation yet that I couldn't rescue something out of. Haven't you got any real property? We could save more. Stocks, bonds, insurance policy? Well, sure, I. I've got insurance. $250,000 worth with lapse premiums. Could they be picked up, reinstated? I think so. But what. What are you going for, Brand? Your peace of mind. And mine, too. You said that. Well, that with your own family it's different. You don't like what they might think of you. That's right. Maybe I can fix that for you. You fix things for me, huh? I told you, I'm a gambler. Let me clear my life up, too. One last big toss. Fix it so I can retire. I'm. I'm with you right up to the $64 question. How do we do it? The answer's worth more, Elliot. Say the full amount of that insurance. 250,000. You make me the beneficiary. And tell the insurance company, if they get nosy that I refinance your business. I. I don't follow you. Yeah. Take my pen. Let's write it out. Little note. Make it clear. All set. Go ahead. Date this. July 8th, 1948. But. But that's two years from now. That's right. You'll see. Well, now, write this. I, Paul Elliot, not acting under duress, am taking my life by my own hand. And that. Wait a minute. Keep writing. And that no living person should in any way be held responsible for my death. Sign it. Put it in an envelope. Give it to me. Oh, listen, this is crazy, Paul. Yours and mine. I give you $50,000 and you give me that suicide. But it's ridiculous. I'm all mixed up. I never heard of anything. Maybe you haven't. I've been thinking of a deal like this for years. But how can we make a deal like that? What if I changed my mind two years from now and wanted to live? Even I know the answer to that part. Right, David. Your mind would be made up for you. Right on schedule. How about it, Paul? $50,000. Empty.
Madame Dulac
I'll.
Rocky Jordan
I'll have to think. Give me some time. I'll. I'll call you. I think so.
Madame Dulac
I. Wait up.
Rocky Jordan
It's a strange, frightening proposition, isn't it, Paul? $50,000 tonight, simply by signing your name to that little note in your pocket. A note that says you died by your own hand. Walking along, thinking it out carefully, you wonder if you really would have to die. Brand himself might be dead in a year. A lot of things could happen before your own life fell due. You could straighten things out, Paul. You know you have the brains to get the business running again. You think you might find a way to outsmart Brand? If necessary, you might even kill him. Hello, friend. This is Paul Elliot. I thought so. What about it, Paul? What have you decided? It's. It's a deal. I'll sign the suicide note tonight. With the prologue of Fatal Appointment, the Signal Oil Company brings you another strange story by the Whistler. But now, since this is travel season, I'd like to pass along a tip to you drivers. Wherever you travel throughout the Pacific coast states from Canada to Mexico, you'll discover that signal is known as the go farther gasoline. Now, naturally, we're mighty proud of that reputation. But even more so, we're proud of what makes signals famous mileage possible. The extra efficiency your motor gets from today's Signal gasoline. Which also means more thrilling knock free power for your car. More driving pleasure for you. Yes, that's right. Performance is the result of the same features a gasoline must have to give you extra mileage. That's why? Signal says your speedometer is the best yardstick of gasoline quality. So if you want to be sure you're choosing the gasoline that stops in quality, there are just two things to remember. One, in gasoline, it takes extra quality to go farther. And two, Signal is the famous go farther gasoline. Now, back to the Whistler. Time has moved swiftly, hasn't it, Paul? Since the night you met Lee Brand. The night you tried to commit suicide and Brand pulled you out of the river. Yes. That night you made a bargain. You agreed to make Bran the beneficiary of your insurance policy in return for $50,000 to get you started again. And now Brand's backing has made it possible for the Paul Elliot Enterprises to rally surprisingly surge ahead. And all your friends are talking about it, calling you the Miracle man. Yes, Paul, it's different now. Not that every transaction has been completely honest, but you've been successful and so busy, you have practically forgotten your deal with Brand. At the office, it's always the same. Working at a fever pitch. Yes.
Madame Dulac
Hello, darling.
Rocky Jordan
Huh? Oh, Barbara. Hello.
Madame Dulac
Hell, you almost didn't remember me.
Rocky Jordan
No, that's not true. I was busy.
Madame Dulac
Barbara, you're always busy. I get more than a few extra minutes with you lately. I'm lucky.
Rocky Jordan
Not as lucky as I am.
Madame Dulac
What about tonight?
Rocky Jordan
Tonight?
Madame Dulac
Our dinner day. You haven't forgotten that? And the weekend party at the wedding? Oh, no, no, no.
Rocky Jordan
I haven't forgotten. And I do want to go, Barbara, and be with you, but.
Madame Dulac
But you're not sure you can make either of them.
Rocky Jordan
That's right, darling. I hope you understand.
Madame Dulac
I do, but I don't have to like it. Will you call me soon?
Rocky Jordan
Very soon, Barbara. You know I will.
Madame Dulac
All right. Climb back in your treadmill. Sorry I interrupted.
Rocky Jordan
Goodbye, Barbara.
Madame Dulac
Bye.
Rocky Jordan
Morning, boy. Oh, good morning, Dick. You look and sound a little down, old man. When are you going to take that vacation? Oh, that's your idea. Well, it's your health. And here's something that says we can spare you around here for a while. Oh, the latest audit. You've got the company in good shape, mister. Here, take a look at this report. With the deals we have set, we'll be counting profits for six months at least. Can't miss. I hope you're right. Really, Paul, you've done wonders. And all of it in exactly two years. Two years? Almost to the.it's July 7th. You know, I thought it was still June. Hey, look, Paul, there's such a thing as concentrating too hard on one thing. I still think that a vacation yes. Yes, I'm definitely going to take some time off, Dick, and right away. Say, are you feeling all right?
Madame Dulac
Of course.
Rocky Jordan
Why? What's the matter? I'm asking you first. It's no vacation. Positively. Now, you've practically got your bags packed. Well, can't a guy change his mind? I suppose. But, Paul, is. Is there anything wrong? Anything I could help you with? Why, no. No, there's not a thing wrong, Dick. Not a thing in the world. But everything's wrong, isn't it, Paul? It's a shock to realize that your time is up and you haven't long to live. If Bran keeps his bargain with you. There just isn't anything you can do. Not now, anyway. You decide to keep your date with Barbara. And later that evening at the weddington party, you wander out on the terrace and stand there looking out over the spacious ground.
Madame Dulac
Beautiful out here, isn't it, Paul?
Rocky Jordan
Yes.
Madame Dulac
Paul?
Rocky Jordan
Yeah?
Madame Dulac
What's wrong with us?
Rocky Jordan
Wrong? I didn't know that there was anything.
Madame Dulac
I'm young, healthy, at least fairly attractive. I'm also very much in love with you, Barbara, and I think you're in love with me.
Rocky Jordan
Of course I am, Barbara.
Madame Dulac
So there it is. Isn't it customary for two people in love to do something about it?
Rocky Jordan
Yes, but. Well, there are things. I mean, problems I have to work.
Madame Dulac
Out before I can, darling. Don't you want to tell me about them? Perhaps I could help you.
Rocky Jordan
I can't very well, not right now, darling.
Madame Dulac
Oh, I see.
Rocky Jordan
There's nothing you could do, really, darling. I've just got to work this thing out by myself. If you'll just give me a little time to straighten things out.
Madame Dulac
Is it about the business, Paul?
Rocky Jordan
Well, yes, yes, in a way.
Madame Dulac
But I thought everything was going so well. Dick's been telling us what a grand job you've done with the company. He even mentioned that you were going to take a vacation.
Rocky Jordan
Well, I haven't quite made up my mind about it.
Madame Dulac
Oh, why don't you, Paul? It would do you good to get away.
Rocky Jordan
Get away? Yes. Yes, it would do me good to get away.
Madame Dulac
Look. Look, I'm going down to Father Summer home at Carmel tomorrow. Why don't you join us? I know Father would love to meet you.
Rocky Jordan
Carmel?
Madame Dulac
Mmm. Wonder, quiet, restful. A perfect hideaway. Oh, you love it, Paul.
Rocky Jordan
Yes. Let me think about it, darling. I'll let you know.
Madame Dulac
You won't have to. I'll be there waiting for you whenever you decide to come down.
Rocky Jordan
All right.
Madame Dulac
And, Paul. Yes, darling? You really have been working Too hard. You're not looking well at all. Getting away from everything would be the best thing in the world for you.
Rocky Jordan
Barbara has given you an idea, hasn't she, Paul? Yes, you do need to get away. As far away from Lee Brand as possible. But Carmel isn't far enough, is it? Shanghai? Buenos Aires, perhaps? Yes, that's much better. And it's the only thing you can do. The next morning, you hurriedly pack a suitcase and that you're about to phone for a taxi. Yes? Mr. Elia? That's right. Bill Adams. I'm with the Atlantic Life Insurance Company. Just making a routine check on your policy. My. My policy? Uh huh. Why, is something wrong? No, nothing wrong. As I said, it's just a routine check about the change of beneficiary you made a couple of years ago when you named Mr. Brand beneficiary of the full amount of $250,000. Well, what about it? At the time you stated your reason for the change was that you're indebted to Mr. Brand in a business way. Yes, that's correct. Well, we understand your business is in excellent shape now. Thought perhaps you'd want to change the beneficiary again. Some member of the family, maybe. Oh, come in, won't you, please? Of course. Mr. Adams gives you an idea, doesn't he, Paul? If you leave town and Bran learns he's no longer the beneficiary, that your death will mean nothing to him. You'll be a lot safer wherever you are. Things look brighter now, don't they, Paul? And you're almost hospitable as the insurance man enters your apartment. Sit down. Sit down, please. Thanks. You know, it's funny you should drop in, Mr. Adams. I've been thinking about my insurance policy. Oh? It would be perfectly all right if I change beneficiary again, wouldn't it? It's up to you. Well, could you do it right away? Well, yes, I suppose so. Have to check with my boss. Your boss? Yeah. You see, he happens to be the beneficiary at the moment. What? You mean. Yeah, Lee Brand. You realize now how useless it would be to try to change the insurance policy, don't you, Paul? And you realize too, that running away is now out of the question. From now on, Brand will have you watched every minute. You're trapped. There seems to be no escape from Brand. And your date was dead. But you're not going to give up. Not just yet. There's Barbara. Somehow you feel she'll be able to help you. She's in Love with you. She'll do anything for you, won't she, Paul? It's early afternoon when you arrive at Carmel. Drive down the main street and park your car before a small curio shop. Quickly, as you hurry inside to ask directions to the Belmont estate. Two men are standing near the door as you enter. And as the door closes behind you, one of them turns around. You freeze in your track. Brand. I beg your pardon. Brand, what are you doing here? I'm sorry, young man. There must be some mistake. I'm afraid I don't know you. You don't know me? Say, wait a minute. I don't understand. You'll excuse me. I'm quite busy. Mr. Tompkins, hold on to these bookends for me, will you? I'll pick them up in a day or so. Yes, sir. I'll do that. Will there be. No, thank you. Brand, wait. Wait. I want to talk to you. Was there something you wanted, young fellow? Yes, that. That man. Who is he? Why, that's Mr. Belmont.
Madame Dulac
Belmont?
Rocky Jordan
Julius Belmont lives out there at the beach. He and his daughter just drove up from the city today. It's fantastic, isn't it? Paul Bran the gambler is Barbara's father. And even if the realization hits you, you see a way out of your bargain. Yes. Barbara is the answer. Sweet, trusting Barbara. And she's waiting for you to marry her. Marriage? That would solve everything, wouldn't it? Yes. You can use Barbara to save your life. You hurry back out into the street, find a phone booth and call the Belmont estate.
Madame Dulac
Oh, Paul, this is a surprise. I hadn't expected to hear from you so soon. When are you coming?
Rocky Jordan
Well, I'm not. Barbara.
Madame Dulac
Oh. Oh, I see.
Rocky Jordan
Barbara, darling, how soon can you meet me at my apartment at.
Madame Dulac
At your apartment? Paul, what's happened?
Rocky Jordan
Nothing.
Madame Dulac
Nothing at all.
Rocky Jordan
Darling, you remember what we talked about last night? That problem I had to work out? Yes. Well, everything. Everything is settled now, darling. My problem has been solved.
Madame Dulac
Oh, then you mean.
Rocky Jordan
I mean I'm asking you to marry me, Barbara. Right away.
Madame Dulac
Oh, darling. Then you aren't going to make me wait till I'm old and gray?
Rocky Jordan
What do you say, Barbara?
Madame Dulac
Oh, of course I'll marry you. Could have told you that the first day we met.
Rocky Jordan
How soon. How soon can you pack a bag and meet me?
Madame Dulac
Well, why can't you come here to Carmel? I want you to meet Father. I haven't told him about you yet.
Rocky Jordan
Oh, no, no, please don't.
Madame Dulac
Don't.
Rocky Jordan
Don't say anything to anyone. Just meet me.
Madame Dulac
Paul, there Is something the matter? Won't you tell me? Nothing.
Rocky Jordan
Nothing's the matter, darling.
Madame Dulac
But then why can't you come here?
Rocky Jordan
Darling. Darling, will you do as I asked this one time?
Madame Dulac
All right, Pa. We. We have a few guests here. It may be some time before I can get away, but I'll come as quickly as I can.
Rocky Jordan
Oh, good. And hurry. Hurry, will you, sweetheart? Yes, your problems are over now, aren't they, Paul? And you wonder what brand alias Mr. Julius Belmont will say when he discovers that you've married his daughter. It'll be too late then for him to do anything, and you'll be freed. You hurry back to town, to your apartment and wait for Barbara. And then, shortly before seven that night. Oh, Barbara, I thought you. Hello, Elliot. Brian. Mind if I come in? What? What do you want? Was a bad mistake you made, Elliot, buying into my private affairs. Look, look, Bran, I didn't. I don't know how you found out or what, but you shouldn't have come down to Carmel, Elliot. You shouldn't have found out I was Julius Belma. Wait a minute, I. What are you doing? Recognize this piece of paper? It's your suicide note, Elliot. Bran. Bran, listen to me. I still have another day. Give me a break. I can't take any more chances. Well, then give me a chance to explain. I'm a great kid, but I'm true gambling. It's all over. Yes, Lee Brand was a happy Man. And there was a spring to his step as he crossed the front terrace of his palatial summer home at Carmel. There was a smile on his face. The smile of a man who had just accomplished something worthwhile. It was over. The plan that had begun two years ago. Paul Elliot was lying dead in his apartment with that suicide note beside him. It would only be a formality now, of course. There'd be an investigation. But with the note to back Brand up, it was only a matter of a few weeks until he received the insurance money. Enough so that he could leave the old life, forget himself as Brand, really begin to live as the man his daughter thought him to be. Julius Belmont, wealthy retired businessman. In the study, Bran poured himself a drink, sat back and relaxed near the huge French windows overlooking the ground. Hello? I've told you never to call me here. Dave, this is importantly.
Madame Dulac
Got a tip.
Rocky Jordan
Nobody told a cop they saw you leave Paul Elliott's apartment around to talk to you. That's all right. I'm ready for them when they find out you're the beneficiary of his life insurance. A quarter of a million bucks. You're forgetting that this was suicide. Yeah, I know, but. Well, I just wanted to let you know, that's all. Thanks. Nothing to worry about, Dave. Nothing at all. That suicide note was written in the deceased's own handwriting. Lee Brand was sure he had nothing to worry about. All he had to do was wait. Let the investigation take a natural course. But as he dropped the phone back onto the hook.
Madame Dulac
Oh, dead.
Rocky Jordan
Barbara, what's the matter?
Madame Dulac
He's dead. He's dead.
Rocky Jordan
Who's dead? Barbara, what are you talking about?
Madame Dulac
Paul. Paul Elliot. Oh, dad. We were going to be married. He was in some sort of trouble.
Rocky Jordan
Paul Elliot? You were going to marry Paul Elliot?
Madame Dulac
Yes.
Rocky Jordan
Tell me. I didn't even realize that. You knew.
Madame Dulac
He loved me. And I loved him. Dad, you gotta do something about it. Find out who killed him.
Rocky Jordan
He was murdered.
Madame Dulac
He never would have killed himself. I know. He just called me. We were gonna be married right away. I know they wanted to make it look like suicide.
Rocky Jordan
But I don't understand.
Madame Dulac
Whoever killed him left a note. A suicide note. The police might have believed it, but I didn't. And now they'll find the murderer.
Rocky Jordan
Barbara, What? What did you do?
Madame Dulac
I burned it. Before the police got them. I burned the suicide. Not.
Rocky Jordan

Release Date: July 29, 2025
Host: RelicRadio.com
Introduction to the Case
The episode opens with Rocky Jordan receiving an enigmatic task from Madame Dulac, a formidable woman concerned about her daughter, Sandra Dulac. Madame Dulac entrusts Rocky with half of a thousand-dollar bill, hinting at a deeper intrigue surrounding Sandra’s entanglement with a dubious character named Eddie Marrow.
Key Quests and Confrontations
Rocky meets Madame Dulac at her opulent Cairo residence, where the hostess outlines Sandra's problematic association with Marrow, an American gambler posing as Tony Bristol. Madame Dulac expresses her desire for Rocky to extricate her daughter from this precarious relationship:
Madame Dulac [04:28]: "She’s gay, selfish, proud, and obstinate. What she needs and has needed for a long time is a good thrashing."
Rocky's investigation leads him to the Cairo Jockey Club, where he confronts Eddie Marrow and his associates. The tension escalates when Rocky is assaulted by Marrow's right-hand man, Shark:
Rocky Jordan [08:08]: "They’re getting a lot of winners, huh? Oh, enough now. Go on. Beat it, Jordan."
Unraveling the Conspiracy
Persisting through adversity, Rocky uncovers evidence of race-fixing through counterfeit winning tickets orchestrated by Marrow and facilitated by Carl Kramer. His pursuit becomes personal when he discovers the murder of Eunice, Marrow’s wife, implicating Madame Dulac despite her denials.
A pivotal revelation occurs when Rocky analyzes the gun found at the crime scene:
Madame Dulac [19:15]: "I didn’t kill her."
Rocky employs his detective acumen to piece together the puzzle, leading to a climactic confrontation between him and Marrow. In the ensuing struggle, Eddie Marrow meets his demise, and the truth about the counterfeit scheme is exposed.
Resolution
With the culprits apprehended, Madame Dulac regains custody of Sandra, albeit shaken by the ordeal. Rocky reflects on the case’s complexities, tying back to the initial mysterious half-thousand-dollar bill that orchestrated the entire investigation.
The Fateful Pact
Transitioning to The Whistler, the narrative delves into the life of Paul Elliot, a man ensnared in a perilous pact with Lee Brand. Two years prior, on a desperate night, Paul attempted suicide, only to be saved by Brand, who then manipulated him into naming Brand as the beneficiary of his sizeable life insurance policy:
Paul Elliot [38:18]: "What about it? Shock. What about Kramer?"
Paul's Descent and Deception
Under Brand's influence, Paul experiences a meteoric rise in his business endeavors, overshadowing his initial struggles. However, the pressure mounts as Paul's obligations to Brand intensify, leading to the suspicious murder of his wife, Eunice. The evidence paints Paul as the prime suspect, with Barbara, Paul's fiancée and Brand's daughter, uncovering the grim truth:
Madame Dulac (Barbara) [57:07]: "He never would have killed himself. I know. He just called me. We were gonna be married right away."
Climactic Confrontation and Revelation
As Paul contemplates escaping his predicament, his deception unravels. At a pivotal moment, Lee Brand reveals his true identity as Julius Belmont, signaling the irreversible consequences of his manipulative schemes. In a dramatic finale, Brand murders Paul, ensuring his control over the situation:
Rocky Jordan [56:53]: "Paul Elliot? You were going to marry Paul Elliot?"
Madame Dulac (Barbara) [57:11]: "You knew."
Aftermath
The tragedy concludes with Barbara confronting the harsh reality of her father's deceit, leaving the listeners with a poignant reflection on manipulation, identity, and the devastating effects of unbridled ambition.
Madame Dulac on Sandra's State [04:47]:
"Now the only reading matter she is interested in is the racing form."
Rocky's Determination [06:12]:
"You've got some use for you, Sandra. It's something you're not gonna like."
Madame Dulac's Plea [10:36]:
"I don't know him. Stop it, will you? I can't even think anymore."
Barbara's Realization [57:20]:
"He never would have killed himself. I know. He just called me. We were gonna be married right away."
"Rocky Jordan and The Whistler" weaves a compelling narrative tapestry, blending suspense, drama, and intricate character dynamics. Through Rocky Jordan's relentless pursuit of truth and The Whistler's exploration of deceit and loyalty, listeners are treated to a masterclass in old-time radio storytelling. The episode underscores themes of honor, sacrifice, and the enduring quest for justice, leaving a lasting impression on its audience.
