In the end, I give up and move to the edge of the window and stare out into the darkness as I wait till dawn in the morning. I stopped by to check on Amber. She's still sleeping soundly and everything seems peaceful. So I leave her and make my own way to Pete's office.

Hey, I'm good. Pete's not around, so I get in the truck with Reynolds who and we head out to the new work site. It's a long day and the breaks are far and few. Between before I know it, the sun has dipped below the mountains and we're back at the office to unload the tools.

I guess. I like the grip. The way it feels in my hand.

And the weird thing is, he was so gentle with them. He could slice up an onion like a surgeon or patch a pair of jeans as neat as you like. But he didn't take shit either. He could be brutal. Not to me, but to anyone who tried to cross him. If that ever happened, he'd put him in their place. I never saw anyone get the better of him. And because of that, I always felt safe with him around. Like nothing could ever touch me. One night, someone broke into our house. It was late and dark, really dark. Dad woke me up and told me there was a prowler downstairs, not to worry. He said I should call 911 while he went and took care of it. I made the call, but something went wrong. Downstairs, I heard dad scream. And I never ever heard him make a sound like that before. The terror in it. For a second, I couldn't believe it was happening. How could some random prowler get the best of my dad? So I went down to have a look. Couldn't see much in the darkness, but I could hear them crashing around. Dad must have realized he was in trouble because he told me to run to get out the door. It was the only time in my life I ever heard fear in his voice.

The way dad sounded had scared me more than anything. So I did what he said. I ran. I opened the front door and tried to leave, but the prowler, he lunged at me, grabbed me by the leg.
