If you went on a road trip and you didn't stop for a Big Mac or drop a crispy fry between the car seats, or use your McDonald's bag as a placemat, then that wasn't a road trip. It was just a really long drive.

Vicky
Hey, Daniel. How's the view out there this morning?
Amber
Bright and sunny. Serene.
Vicky
You didn't stay awake all night, did you?
Amber
No, I got some sleep.
Vicky
How much?
Amber
Enough. How about you? Any of those dreams awake you?
Vicky
No, thankfully I was out of it. These beds are pretty comfy for a motor in, at least. Is everything okay? You look perturbed.
Amber
Still? Just trying to make sense of the situation here in Oakwood. That mess from last night?
Vicky
Well, sure. After what happened in the alley, I can understand a little apprehension.
Amber
It's not just the incident with Jeffrey Lee. It's everything about the last 12 hours.
Vicky
Did I sleep through something major?
Amber
No. And that's the thing. Nothing really happened.
Vicky
Like you said, it's serene. That's. That's good though, right?
Amber
I don't know if it is. Think about it, Amber. No police sirens, no ambulances, no activity on the streets like you might expect after a dead body is discovered in the middle of town in a small place like Oakwood. Well, this neighborhood should be buzzing.
Vicky
All quiet, huh?
Amber
There's a goddamn mouse.
Vicky
What if the whole situation was all taken care of? Hush, hush.
Amber
Not a single siren. I'm not buying that.
Vicky
That body has to have been discovered by now. Like you said, it. I mean, it happened right in the middle of town.
Amber
Someone would have seen it by now for sure.
Vicky
So what else could it be? I mean, the guy was toast. It's not like he was going to get up and dust himself off and then head home for a shower, is it?
Amber
What if he was foxing? Playing dead?
Vicky
I'm not sure if that's the question. What we should be asking is whether Jeffrey Lee was even a shadow to begin with.
Amber
Of course he was. He had to be.
Vicky
Why?
Amber
You heard him talking. He mentioned the conduit. The kin being a hundred years old. Mother. How could he know that if he wasn't a shadow?
Vicky
The two of us know it. And we're not shadows.
Amber
So you're suggesting Jeff was Nostromo, like us.
Vicky
Well, he doesn't have to be Nostromo. What if he was some kind of scholar who'd been studying them?
Amber
The guy admitted he was a shadow, Amber.
Vicky
Maybe he was delusional. Like. Like a psychopath who got lost in the lore and started to play out a fantasy.
Amber
I don't know about that.
Vicky
It would explain why you didn't sense any bloodlust when he attacked you.
Amber
I did sense bloodlust. It was faint, but it was definitely there.
Vicky
Are you sure?
Amber
Okay, so if Jeff wasn't a shadow like you suggest, we should have heard sirens by now.
Vicky
Maybe they didn't want to disturb anyone late at night. Who knows?
Amber
Screw this. How about we just go take a.
Vicky
Look in the alley, yeah?
Amber
See what's there.
Vicky
The killers returning to the scene of the crime.
Amber
If the cops found Jeff's body, there's going to be an investigation.
Daniel
Shit.
Vicky
Those people at the end of the alley might have seen us hanging around. It is possible they could even identify us.
Amber
Right. In which case, we'll have no choice but to leave town. If it comes down to that, I prefer to hit the road sooner rather than later.
Vicky
Okay. Just let me put some clothes on.
Amber
Bring everything you've got. We might not be coming back here.
Vicky
Wait. Wait a second. You're gonna bring the axe?
Amber
I don't go anywhere without it. You know that.
Vicky
This might be the one time you make an exception to that rule.
Amber
No chance.
Vicky
Daniel, if you show up at a crime scene with an ax that matches the wounds on a murder victim's chest and throat, well, that's a good old fashioned smoking gun as far as I'm concerned. Hell, Jeffrey's blood might still be on the blade.
Amber
I cleaned it top to bottom.
Vicky
There might still be traces.
Amber
Don't worry. I'll shove it down deep into the backpack. No one will even notice.
Vicky
You sure?
Amber
It'll be fine. Come on. Get your things together. We need to find out what's going on in downtown Oakwood. Okay, if we keep heading this way, we'll pass right by the alley. If anyone asks, we're just going to the diner. To get a bite to eat.
Vicky
We shouldn't stop for too long at the alley though. If we loiter, that could arouse suspicion, Right?
Amber
We don't want to be too obvious.
Vicky
How about you stop and tie your shoelace? That should give us a few extra seconds.
Amber
The old stop and tie the shoelaces routine, huh?
Vicky
Yeah, what can I say? I'm a fan of the classics.
Amber
Nice and simple. Works for me.
Vicky
Okay, here's the alley. You ready?
Amber
Yeah. Here we go.
Vicky
That's good. Daniel, take your time with that shoelace.
Amber
Going as slow as I can.
Vicky
All right. I can see the spot where we parked the motorcycle last night.
Amber
Anything there?
Vicky
No corpse, that's for sure. And no police tape? No, nothing.
Amber
Blood stains.
Vicky
It's hard to see from this distance, but.
Amber
Let me stand up so I can take a better look.
Vicky
There is something there if you get on the right angle. A wet patch.
Amber
Blood?
Vicky
No, no, it's way too big for that. See? It goes all the way from one side to the other.
Amber
Looks like water.
Vicky
Yeah, but there are no other patches anywhere else.
Amber
It's like someone wash the blood away down into the gutter.
Vicky
Why the hell would they do that?
Amber
I don't know, but I think it's time we got moving. Amber. We shouldn't be seen here.
Vicky
You don't want to go over and take a look at that wet patch?
Amber
I'd rather not risk it. And besides, I don't think there's anything to see. Whatever evidence was there has literally gone down the drain.
Vicky
God, this is so fucking weird.
Amber
Tell me about it.
Vicky
What do we do?
Amber
Let's just act normal. Carry on with our plan.
Vicky
The diner. Maybe a morning coffee will clear my head a little.
Amber
Can't hurt. Let's go. You want another slice of toast?
Vicky
Oh, no, no, I'm good, thanks. Can we clear a little room here? Okay. There you go.
Amber
Some light reading over breakfast, huh?
Vicky
I just figured I'd go back over the compendium to see if there's something I missed. Some clues that might explain what the hell is going on around here.
Amber
I think I might have come up with a theory if you want to hear it.
Vicky
About our friend from last night? Yeah, all right, go ahead. I'm all ears.
Amber
Okay, so I was thinking that maybe he was affected by your touch last night. After all, we know that different shadows react in different ways. Wilted, for example. They bleed much slower than a regular run of the mill shadow. Like James Schilling, right?
Vicky
I am with you so far.
Amber
What if Jeff was different again? Maybe it Took even longer for his body to react to the contact of your skin. It could have been that five or 10 minutes after we left, his body finally started to melt. That might explain the wet patch.
Vicky
The shadows don't leave behind a wet patch after their bodies have melted. They basically evaporate. We've seen that happen multiple times now.
Amber
But what if he's not like the others? What if.
Jeffrey Lee
Excuse me. Sorry for interrupting you, but I wonder if I might have a minute of your time.
Vicky
Sure. What can we do for you?
Jeffrey Lee
I was just talking to the waitress, and she told me she saw the two of you here last night at the diner. Is that true?
Amber
Yeah, we were here. Stopped briefly for a bite to eat.
Jeffrey Lee
I haven't seen you around town before. Are you moving in?
Amber
Just passing through.
Jeffrey Lee
Oh, okay. That's great. I'm wondering if you can help me. I'm looking for someone and I was hoping maybe you'd seen him.
Vicky
Who? Who is it you're looking for?
Jeffrey Lee
It's my brother. I printed out a bunch of flyers this morning. You can see his picture right here, along with height and weight and a few other details. Details?
Vicky
Jeffrey Lee.
Jeffrey Lee
He's missing. I've been looking for him for quite a while now, actually, and it just so happens someone saw him on the street last night, and I.
Amber
Wait. He's your brother?
Jeffrey Lee
Yes. Is there a problem with that?
Amber
Sorry, you. You just don't look much alike.
Jeffrey Lee
Oh, this isn't the problem. Best photo of Jeff, I'll admit. Here, I have another one in my purse. This is us as teenagers. See?
Amber
Yeah, right.
Jeffrey Lee
Happier times, then.
Vicky
So you said he's missing? Since when?
Jeffrey Lee
Well, that's a bit of a long story. I don't want to interrupt your breakfast or anything.
Vicky
No, no, we'd be happy to hear it. Please, go ahead.
Jeffrey Lee
Right. So Jeff has always been a bit of a misfit. Didn't have a lot of friends at school and usually spent his free time by himself reading comic books and collecting bugs and stuff. A lot of people thought he was weird, but he was a good kid. Shy, but once you got to know him, he could really open up. He was fun to be around. But then something changed. A few years back, he started goofing up on the job and disappearing for days on end. It wasn't like him. And on top of that, he stopped coming over to the house. We used to sit and watch football every Sunday, but he just lost interest. And then the phone calls dried up until, well, he just disappeared altogether. No one could find him. I figured he must have left town. But then he suddenly showed up again out of nowhere.
Amber
Showed up where?
Jeffrey Lee
Right here in town. Yesterday afternoon. See, I was home in the kitchen making a sandwich, when all of a sudden, I caught a glimpse of someone standing in the shadow of the oak tree in the front yard. It was a little unnerving at first, I gotta admit, because whoever it was just. Just kept so still and quiet. They were watching me through the window. As far as I could tell, I didn't recognize who it was. At first, his face was in shadow and it didn't look like Jeff, too thin and stringy. But then he shifted his weight and tucked a flap of his shirt into his pants, just like Jeff used to do. I'd know his mannerisms anywhere. So I made a beeline for the front door and hurried outside. But when I got there, he disappeared into thin air.
Vicky
Are you sure it was really him? Maybe it was someone else.
Jeffrey Lee
Well, afterward, I did start to wonder. Thought I must have just imagined the whole thing going crazy, you know? But then last night, I got a call from my pal Susie, and she heard from a friend of a friend that someone saw Jeff in town. And I realized that maybe that was him after all. So I put these flyers together first thing this morning and hit the pavement. I must have handed out 30 or 40 already.
Amber
Any luck?
Jeffrey Lee
No one can tell me anything. Not yet, at least. What about you two? Do you remember seeing him?
Vicky
I don't think we can help you, Vicky. I'm sorry.
Jeffrey Lee
You sure? Like I said, he's thinner now. More gone in the face.
Amber
Amber's right. We don't have anything to tell you. Unfortunately, I. I hope something turns up, though. You obviously care a lot about him.
Jeffrey Lee
Yeah. He's my little brother. And I just want to make sure he's okay. I'm worried about him, you know?
Vicky
Sure, I can understand that. 100%.
Jeffrey Lee
I'm gonna leave you to it. But if you happen to see anything, please let me know, okay? My number's right there. And enjoy your stay in Oakwood.

Daniel, just calm down.
Amber
Calm down? Amber, I just found out that I fucking murdered someone. I chopped down a person in cold blood.
Vicky
No, we don't know that yet.
Amber
Actually, we do. Didn't you see the photograph? The one of Vicky and Jeff when they were teenagers?
Vicky
Yeah, I saw it.
Amber
Shadows don't age, Amber. We know that for a fact. And they sure as hell don't have sisters who go around handing out fucking flyers when they go missing.
Vicky
It's a trick, Daniel. We've seen this kind of shit before.
Amber
No, we haven't. And that's the problem.
Vicky
What are you talking about? Think about it. In every single town we've visited, there's been a shadow waiting, ready to fool us with some kind of misdirection. An illusion. It happened with Schilling. And then Blake and all the others since.
Amber
Not like this. Not like this at all.
Vicky
How do you figure?
Amber
Those other shadows had their tricks, I'll give you that. But after a while, they all started to look the same. They tried to lead us into a physical trap or a dangerous situation. And sure, they caught us off guard the first few times, but since then, we've managed to avoid the pitfalls. Easy.
Vicky
Yeah, we. We talked about this a couple of days ago. You had a theory that the shadows might not be used to being threatened. Since they've spent so long at the top of the food chain, they're not used to dealing with predators like us.
Amber
Right? So if this really is another trick. It's way more complex than anything we've dealt with before.
Vicky
Maybe the shadows are adapting. That's possible, right?
Amber
I guess.
Vicky
If you think about it, there's no way they would have kept their secrets so long, thousands of years, if they weren't resourceful. So maybe this is just their latest strategy.
Amber
Either way, I Shouldn't have acted like a lunatic and chopped Jeff up in the alley like that.
Vicky
It was reckless, Daniel. The guy admitted right there to the two of us that he was a shadow. What else were you supposed to do?
Amber
I screwed up. Obviously. But there's not much I can do about it now, is there?
Vicky
Right. We need to stop dwelling on the past and come up with a plan of action. Decide what we're gonna do from here. Because from where I stand, I don't see Oakwood as a straightforward shadow hunt anymore. We have to consider what could happen if someone connects the dots. Bystanders saw Jeff on the streets last night. It's entirely possible that they saw us, too. For all we know, the cops could be on their way here right now to.
Amber
What the hell?
Vicky
No one knows we're here, do they?
Amber
Just the guy at the front desk.
Vicky
Could be room service.
Amber
Only one way to find out. Hello?
Daniel
Don't hang up. We need to talk.
Amber
Who's this?
Daniel
A friend.
Amber
Oh, really? Where are you calling from, friend?
Daniel
From right here in Oakwood.
Amber
I don't have any friends. Not in this town.
Daniel
Well, maybe not before, but you do now.
Amber
You're the shadow, aren't you?
Vicky
Daniel? Who is it? Is it Jeff?
Daniel
Is that your companion? I can hear. Ask her to come to the receiver, please. She needs to hear this, too.
Amber
It's not Jeff. Some guy with a British accent.
Vicky
British?
Amber
He wants you to come to the receiver.
Daniel
Do I have you both?
Vicky
We're listening.
Daniel
Good. Now, I don't have much time, so I'll make this brief.
Amber
What's your hurry?
Daniel
I'm calling from a payphone. And it's not my preference to remain in public any longer than I have to.
Vicky
How come?
Daniel
I have my reasons. But that's. That's not important right now. What. What is important is.
Amber
How'd you find us?
Daniel
You have to leave town. Both of you. Don't delay. The longer you stay, the greater the peril. And the two of you are far too important to lose to such a frivolous undertaking.
Vicky
Important? Important how? What. What do you mean by that?
Amber
You better start making sense, asshole, or I'm hanging up.
Daniel
Please listen. I'm trying to help you. You won't defeat them. Not here in Oakwood.
Amber
Them? You mean the shadows?
Daniel
You mentioned that word before. Shadow? Is that what you call them? The wicked ones?
Vicky
So you do know about them.
Daniel
Oh, I know much about the wicked. Or shadows, if you want to call them that. I have a long history with them.
Amber
As it turns out, so do we. And we just Happen to have taken down a bunch of them lately. We're not scared of them.
Daniel
Have you learned nothing from the book? The Wicked Ones cannot be trifled with.
Vicky
What book?
Daniel
The one you were reading in the diner. The Compendium, the Wicked Devils of Night.
Vicky
Holy shit.
Amber
How do you know about that book?
Daniel
There's really no time to go into this.
Amber
You walked past our table and saw the title, didn't you?
Daniel
I saw it through the window as I went past, but I didn't need to see the title to know what it was. I'd recognize that binding anywhere.
Vicky
So you've read it?
Daniel
I know it. Intimately.
Amber
Bullshit. This guy is pulling our chain.
Daniel
There is a stirring in the town once more, and I feel that I must make known my thoughts and innermost feelings here with ink and parchment before the time comes that I am no longer able to do so. First, I must give an account of my dear sister, the gentlest of women, who this past year met with an untimely demise at the hands of the accursed scarlet fever.
Vicky
Oh, my God. That's a direct quote. Word for word.
Amber
Could he have seen that page this morning?
Vicky
No, not. Not that one. No. I didn't open to that passage while we were at the diner. Not once.
Daniel
You see, there's proof.
Amber
So what's the deal? Do you have your own copy?
Daniel
There's only one copy of that tome, the one you have in your possession now. But listen, please. I have to end this call soon.
Vicky
And I can't just leave us hanging like that. When did you read the book? Who are you?
Daniel
If I tell you, will you promise to hear me out? To take me at my word?
Amber
That depends.
Vicky
Go on. Tell us.
Daniel
Well, as it turns out, I haven't just read that book of yours, the Wicked Devils of Night. I am the one who wrote it.

The Road of Shadows: Episode 4.2 - Disappearance
Release Date: June 24, 2025
Introduction
In Episode 4.2, titled "Disappearance," of "The Road of Shadows," host Mark R. Healy deepens the enigmatic saga of Daniel Knox and his relentless pursuit of understanding the elusive creatures known as Shadows. This episode intricately weaves suspense, mystery, and character development, bringing listeners closer to unraveling the dark secrets lurking within the remote mountain community of Oakwood.
Setting the Scene: Oakwood's Uneasy Calm
The episode opens with Daniel, Amber, and Vicky settling into the tranquil yet unnerving environment of Oakwood. Despite the apparent serenity, tensions run high as the trio grapples with the aftermath of a recent incident involving a man named Jeffrey Lee.
Amber [02:22]:
"I don't know if it is. Think about it, Amber. No police sirens, no ambulances, no activity on the streets like you might expect after a dead body is discovered in the middle of town in a small place like Oakwood."
(02:22)
Amber's observations highlight a disconcerting lack of response from authorities, raising suspicions about the true nature of Jeffrey Lee's disappearance.
Investigating the Alley: Clues and Anomalies
Determined to uncover the truth, Amber and Vicky decide to investigate the alley where Jeffrey was last seen. Their search yields perplexing evidence: a sizeable wet patch that defies immediate explanation.
Vicky [06:15]:
"No corpse, that's for sure. And no police tape? No, nothing."
(06:15)
Amber [06:40]:
"Looks like water."
(06:40)
The absence of typical crime scene markers suggests that something unusual is at play, possibly involving the Shadows' manipulative capabilities.
A Chance Encounter: Jeffrey Lee's Plea for Help
During breakfast at the local diner, the group encounters Jeffrey Lee, who seeks their assistance in locating his missing brother, Jeff. His narrative adds a new layer of complexity to the mystery.
Jeffrey Lee [09:15]:
"Right. So Jeff has always been a bit of a misfit... But then something changed. A few years back, he started goofing up on the job and disappearing for days on end."
(09:15)
Jeffrey describes an unsettling encounter where he believes he saw his brother vanish mysteriously, reinforcing the supernatural undertones of the Shadows' influence.
The Wet Patch Dilemma: Blood or Deception?
Back at the alley, Amber and Vicky discuss the perplexing wet patch, debating whether it signifies a deliberate cover-up or an unknown aspect of the Shadows' behavior.
Amber [08:26]:
"That might explain the wet patch."
(08:26)
Vicky [08:34]:
"The shadows don't leave behind a wet patch after their bodies have melted. They basically evaporate."
(08:34)
This conversation underscores the group's struggle to reconcile observed evidence with their limited understanding of the Shadows.
A Revelatory Phone Call: Daniel's Dire Warning
The tension escalates when Daniel receives a cryptic phone call from an unknown individual warning them about the escalating threat of the Shadows in Oakwood. This pivotal moment shifts the group's dynamics and raises critical questions about Daniel's true intentions.
Daniel [18:15]:
"You have to leave town. Both of you. Don't delay. The longer you stay, the greater the peril."
(18:15)
This urgent plea hints at Daniel's deeper connection to the Shadows and foreshadows impending conflicts.
Clash of Truths: The Compendium Revelation
As the episode progresses, Daniel confronts Amber and Vicky with his profound knowledge of the Shadows, referencing "The Wicked Devils of Night," a compendium they all are familiar with.
Daniel [21:45]:
"I am the one who wrote it."
(21:45)
This confession not only shocks Amber and Vicky but also blurs the lines between ally and adversary, deepening the narrative complexity.
Climactic Confrontation: Trust Shattered
The revelation leads to a heated confrontation where mistrust surfaces, and the trio must reassess their alliance in the face of Daniel's startling admission.
Amber [19:55]:
"Could he have seen that page this morning?"
(19:55)
Vicky [22:28]:
"Sam."
(22:28)
The suspense peaks as secrets unravel, setting the stage for future episodes filled with intrigue and potential betrayal.
