Today's episode is supported by In Media Res A Hollywood Odyssey in five Acts. In Media Res is a scripted fiction podcast from the Good Story Guild. It's a whip smart and darkly comic limited series about an unknown actor given a huge franchise role as the next Jack Stella and the Hollywood Machine that upends his life. The show features fast paced cinematic storytelling interspersed with musical interludes and thematically it does a great job of showing the petty transactional underbelly of film studio politics. There's also our companion concept EP Shangria Los Angeles with six original songs in the style of iconic Bond themes featuring Bruce Watson, a foreigner. Cinephiles and industry outsiders alike will have plenty to chew on over the three hour program. I've listened to N Media Res and I can tell you this kind of thing is right up my alley. I love a good combo of music and storytelling, especially since I personally got my start in audio fiction making concept albums. So I really enjoyed every second of this show and I have to say the songs are really awesome. Go and have a listen to the episode titled On Tract one Blood in the Water for a start. I got some cool Rage against the Machine vibes as soon as I heard it. The entire series of In Media Res is out now and you can listen, rate and review it wherever you get your podcasts. Our thanks to InMedia Res for their support.

Daniel
Morning Amber. Quite an operation you've got going on there.
Amber
Morning. Yeah, I figured it wouldn't hurt to start the day with a hearty breakfast since we've got so much to do. Hope you're hungry.
Daniel
Sure Am Smells great.
Amber
Would you mind grabbing a couple eggs for me?
Daniel
No problem. Hey, do you mind if I duck out for a second?
Amber
Going somewhere?
Daniel
Just to the corner store. We're out of milk.
Amber
Oh, sure. Sounds good.
Daniel
Do you need me to stay and help?
Amber
It's fine. I've got things currently covered here.
Daniel
Okay. Should be only a couple of minutes. Be back soon.
Amber
All right. One more minute for the bacon, then the eggs. Let me guess. You forgot to take some cash. Just grab my purse over there and turn around and.
Daniel
Fuck.
Amber
Who the fuck are you? What are you doing in my kitchen?
Dragisa
Who am I? I think you know the answer to that already.
Amber
Your skin. You're one of the wilted.
Dragisa
Come now. You're not even trying.
Amber
I know your voice. You. You're Dragisa.
Dragisa
Ah, good. She hasn't entirely lost her wits.
Amber
What are you doing here? Where's Daniel?
Dragisa
Him? I don't know. And to be honest, I don't really care. I thought I'd made it clear that you are the one I'm interested in, not him.
Amber
You do know that I could kill you where you stand, don't you? One touch from my fingers, I'm perfectly safe.
Dragisa
No harm will befall me here. And these empty threats are beneath you, Amber, come on.
Amber
Take one step closer. I dare you.
Dragisa
Our time together is limited, as you surely must know. So we could spend these precious few moments hurling empty threats at one another. But personally, I'd much prefer to use this time doing something productive. Wouldn't you?
Amber
Productive? I don't know what you mean by that.
Dragisa
Look at you, Amber. Standing there, exuding false contentment as you wallow in a kitchen, of all things. Like some dreary housewife scuttling about in the shadow of her husband. Is that all you want from this life?
Amber
You came here to taunt me, Is that it? Is this what you call productive?
Dragisa
I'm trying to save you from wasting your potential. You are so much more than this.
Amber
Well, thanks for your concern, Dragisa, but I'm doing just fine without your help.
Dragisa
Is that so? Surely you must admit you were fortunate to survive your encounter with Susan Blake in Black Ridge.
Amber
Fortunate? No, that's not the term I would.
Dragisa
Use if circumstance had played out in just a slightly different way. Both you and Daniel would have perished if Susan hadn't succumbed to her bitterness and jealousy.
Amber
Susan is dead. Her friend too. Daniel and I saw to that ourselves.
Dragisa
You were lucky and you know it. Eventually that luck will run out.
Amber
We'll see about that.
Dragisa
You are destined for something greater than this. Amber. An honor that is precious and rare. Only the most exalted of the Vespereen are ever chosen to experience it.
Amber
Yeah. So what is it?
Dragisa
Someone wishes to meet with you. Someone who understands your true value.
Amber
Mother.
Dragisa
She waits patiently, even now. I can take you to her. Isn't that what you want?
Amber
An introduction to Mother? Sure. Sounds great. Oh. Mind if I bring Daniel along?
Dragisa
No, not him.
Amber
What's the matter? Are you afraid of his power?
Dragisa
His power? Don't make me laugh. You are the one who possesses the power, Amber. That's what you don't realize. You are the one with the true gift. Don't you feel it? You can hear them, can't you? You can hear her. She's calling to you.
Amber
No, no, I.
Dragisa
Listen, Amber. Listen to her voice and heed it. Heed your mother's call.
Amber
Get out of my. Get out of my fucking head.
Daniel
Damn, that's a lot of smoke. I think you burnt it.
Amber
Amber.
Daniel
I don't mind my bacon crispy, but. Amber, what's wrong?
Amber
Huh? Where did she go?
Daniel
Hey. Hey. Take. Take a seat right here. There you go. Just let me take care of this stuff.
Amber
I'm sorry, I.
Daniel
It's all good. All taken care of. Are you okay? You look out of it.
Amber
Did you see her? Is she gone?
Daniel
Who?
Amber
Drugisa.
Daniel
Drugisa? The shadow who's been talking to you in your dreams.
Amber
Yeah, but this time she was here.
Daniel
Where?
Amber
Right there, where you're standing.
Daniel
Was this a few minutes ago or.
Amber
No. No, it was just now as you came through the door.
Daniel
There's no one here but us, Amber.
Amber
Shit. That's great. That's fucking great. Oh, God, I'm going crazy.
Daniel
Tell me what happened. Go back to the beginning.
Amber
It was right after you left to go to the store. I heard the door open again and thought you must have forgotten something. But when I turned around, it was her.
Daniel
What did she say?
Amber
Just a bunch of bullshit about how I was special and how I needed to leave with her. She wants me to meet with Mother.
Daniel
Did you accept?
Amber
Jokingly. I asked if you could come along too, but she didn't like the idea of that. Anyway, that is not the part that concerns me. She is in my head, Daniel. She pulled me out of reality right here in broad daylight.
Daniel
Was this more powerful than the other times when she came to you in your dreams?
Amber
Oh, 100%. It felt so real, I thought I could just reach out and punch her right on her ugly, wrinkled nose.
Daniel
Maybe it was just a once off.
Amber
Or maybe this is a sign that those Bastards are starting to get their hooks into me even deeper than before.
Daniel
You don't know that.
Amber
What I do know is that I'm not the same person I was a few months ago. Hell, a few weeks ago.
Daniel
How so?
Amber
We talked about this, remember? How I'm not getting sick like I used to, and my perception of the shadows is different now. The way I sense them. I thought I had a handle on it, but now I'm not so sure.
Daniel
Hey, hey. There's no need to get all wound up about this, Amber. Maybe you won't ever see Dragisa like that again.
Amber
And if I do?
Daniel
Then you'll be ready for it next time.
Amber
But, Daniel, if I can't distinguish fantasy from reality, that's a problem.
Daniel
Don't worry. I'll help you come up with some strategies. It's going to be okay. Why don't you help me clean this stuff up so we can start over again? You still hungry?
Amber
Yeah, I guess.
Daniel
Grab a couple more eggs for me, huh? I'll have something ready in no time. So this is it? This is the spot?
Amber
Yep, this is it. The last place anyone saw Thomas Cracknell alive before he vanished off the face.
Daniel
Of the earth back in 57.
Amber
You got it. 27 years.
Daniel
Do you think much has changed?
Amber
Well, I can't give you a definitive answer on that, but from what I've read, not much. The highway was upgraded back in the 60s and made a little wider, but that's about it.
Daniel
So what do we know about what happened here?
Amber
There was a witness traveling west along the highway in her car. This way. She was on her way to visit her father when she saw Cracknell stumbling along the edge of the road. She slowed down and called out to ask if he was okay, but Cracknell didn't respond. Didn't even acknowledge that she was there.
Daniel
Where did Cracknell go?
Amber
Down there, under the bridge.
Daniel
What else did this witness say?
Amber
That's all I've got. She kept going on her way and forgot about the incident until the whole situation with Cracknell became public a day or two later. That's when she came forward to tell her story.
Daniel
Who's the witness?
Amber
Um, a lady by the name of Agnes Witt. But before you ask, no, we can't talk to her. She died five years ago in 79.
Daniel
So what are we hoping to find here? It's been almost three decades since the incident. Any evidence is most likely gone by now.
Amber
I'm just trying to follow every lead to the end. I mean, what else are we gonna do? It's not like we have other stuff to investigate.
Daniel
You want to check under the bridge?
Amber
We might as well, since we're here.
Daniel
Okay. I think I see a way down here. Watch your footing.
Amber
Well, there's not much here.
Daniel
What were you expecting? Our resident shadow sitting here knitting a sweater?
Amber
Not that, but I don't know, maybe something.
Daniel
Do you think Cracknell jumped in the water in there?
Amber
That stream is barely ankle deep.
Daniel
Might have been deeper in 57.
Amber
Well, we can't rule that out, but something tells me that isn't the answer.
Daniel
I guess the bridge wasn't his final destination anyway. Just a waypoint. They found footsteps in the woods, didn't they?
Amber
Yeah, but I have no idea where. There are no specifics in any of the articles I read. I guess we just have to keep searching.
Daniel
If he did keep going through the woods, that's dozens, if not hundreds of square miles of terrain. There's no way we can cover that.
Amber
No. No, I guess not. Should we just call it quits and head back to town?
Daniel
What about that concrete dome over there? See it sticking out of the weeds?
Amber
Yeah.
Daniel
Maybe there's a way to get it open.
Amber
You think there's something below us? A sewer or a tunnel or something?
Daniel
Who knows? Give me a second to check it out.
Amber
Hey, watch your fingers.
Daniel
Yeah, I'll be careful.
Amber
You're not thinking there's gonna be a shadow den under here here, are you?
Daniel
Not really.
Amber
Because if there was a den here, I should be feeling something by now, and I. Daniel, we are not alone.
Daniel
Hang on one second.
Amber
Daniel, there's someone here.
Daniel
What? Who is it?
Amber
I don't know.
Daniel
I. I don't see anyone.
Amber
They just disappeared again.
Daniel
Where were they?
Amber
Over there. In the tall grass by the woods.
Daniel
Come on, let's check it out.
Amber
Nothing.
Daniel
Are you sure you saw someone?
Amber
Look, I am not. I am not imagining things, Daniel. I'm not going crazy. Someone was here.
Daniel
Okay, I believe you. Was it Dragisa again?
Amber
No. It was a girl with long hair. Younger than Dragisa.
Daniel
Anyone you recognize?
Amber
I couldn't see clearly enough, but there was definitely something familiar about her.
Daniel
Well, whoever it was, they're gone now.
Amber
Yeah, I guess they are.
Daniel
Do you want to keep looking?
Amber
No. Honestly, I don't feel anything here. There's no den, no nothing. Most likely we won't find the answer under the bridge. It's out there in the woods. But I have no idea where to start.
Daniel
Should we just go back to town?
Amber
Yeah, back to square one, I guess. See if we can find more witnesses or evidence of other disappearances. Sooner or later we have to catch a break, don't we?
Daniel
I sure hope so. Amber. Come on, let's go. Lowes knows when you're looking for reliability, the right brand makes all the difference. For the most part, it's slow going, and as we return home that night, I can tell by Amber's somber mood that she's bothered by something. Talk to me, Amber. What's on your mind?
Amber
H. Oh, sorry if I've been a bit quiet. I'm just trying to process.
Daniel
Process what?
Amber
Everything that's going on. I mean, it feels a bit like we're wasting our time here, doesn't it?
Daniel
We haven't made much progress in the last couple of days, I'll admit, but that's not through lack of effort.
Amber
I'm not questioning the effort more the results. We are no closer to finding the Shadow than we were the day we arrived here.
Daniel
We've only been here a few days, don't forget. It took weeks for us to take down shadows in some of those other towns we've been through.
Amber
Yeah, but in those places, I always felt like we were getting somewhere. We knew who the shadows were, and every day we made a little more progress towards cornering them. But here, what have we got?
Daniel
We have Geoffrey Lee and Thomas Cracknell.
Amber
And those two haven't given us a Single lead. Not one.
Daniel
Amber, we knew this scenario was going to happen eventually. Roderick told us there are potentially thousands of shadows out there, and we have no idea who they are or where to find them. If we want to keep hunting them, this is just how it's going to be from now on.
Amber
So we're going to have to come up with a more effective way of tracking them down, aren't we? One that's a hell of a lot faster than this.
Daniel
Maybe. Or maybe there is no faster way. Maybe we just have to be patient.
Amber
And speaking of Rodrick, what happened to him? Did he leave town?
Daniel
Well, we haven't heard from him in a couple of days, so.
Amber
So he gave up on us.
Daniel
Looks like it. Are you thinking we should leave town, too?
Amber
If Rodrik can lead us to the Blood Monarch, maybe. Maybe that would be a better use of our time.
Daniel
You're willing to let things go with Thomas Cracknell and Jeffrey Lee?
Amber
At this point, I'm not even sure Thomas Cracknell was a real person like Roderick told us. He seems more like a town myth. I mean, how many people have we talked to over the past couple of days? We've walked all over this damn town, knocking on doors, and no. No one can tell us a thing about him.
Daniel
Someone has to know.
Amber
I wouldn't count on it.
Daniel
Maybe we should try a different tactic then.
Amber
If you mean riding around town and waiting to feel a twinge, I'm not sure that's gonna work either. We've already covered most of the streets in Oakwood, and I haven't felt a thing yet. That tells me that we're not even close to finding the shadows, Den.
Daniel
Are you afraid that you've lost the ability to sense them?
Amber
It crossed my mind a couple of times.
Daniel
But I don't know what's really bothering you, Amber. There's something else, isn't there?
Amber
Am I that easy to read?
Daniel
Come on. Tell me.
Amber
Yeah, okay. I've been thinking about Jenny again.
Daniel
You're still dwelling on that. The phone call you had the last night.
Amber
You spoke no further back than that. The. The day she left.
Daniel
What made you think of that?
Amber
I don't know exactly. The last couple of days, I just. I just haven't been able to shake it. The thought of her walking out to her car and. And waving goodbye.
Daniel
You're not still feeling guilty about this, are you? Amber, there's nothing you could have done to save her.
Amber
I still blame myself for the way things ended, Daniel. I can't help it.
Daniel
Look, I understand what you're Going through. If it's any consolation, I felt that way, too, for a while.
Amber
You did?
Daniel
Yeah. With my dad.
Amber
How come?
Daniel
For years. Kept thinking about the night he died at the hands of that shadow. Time after time, I'd play the events over in my mind, trying to figure out how things might have gone differently if only I'd done something. Like maybe if I'd been quicker to call 911, help might have arrived sooner. Or if I told dad to stay in my bedroom and we barricaded the door, he might have been okay.
Amber
Well, there's no way you could have known what was waiting downstairs. You thought it was just a prowler.
Daniel
Even so, it still ate me up inside. I kept imagining scenarios about what my life would have been like if dad had survived that night. Would never have ended up in foster care, on the run from shadows or any of that shit. If only I'd made a different decision.
Amber
Does it still play on your mind?
Daniel
Not really. Not anymore.
Amber
How did you overcome it?
Daniel
I just came to the realization that I had to let it go. I had to accept that I couldn't change the past and that I had to move on. Otherwise, I was never going to heal. And I think that's what you have to do with the Jenny. Amber. As hard as it might be, you have to just let her go.
Amber
Yeah. Easier said than done.
Daniel
Give it time. Like I said, it took me years. And.
Amber
Well, looks like he's still around.
Daniel
Roderick?
Amber
Who else? Let's see if he's got something new to tell us.
Daniel
Right. I'll listen in.
Amber
This is Amber.
Grace
Amber. Are you the one who's been asking questions all over town? The one who hangs around with the guy on the motorcycle?
Amber
Uh, am I? Hang on a second. Who is this?
Grace
It is you, ain't it?
Amber
Who are you? How did you get this number?
Grace
You've been leaving your contact details with people all over the place, telling them if they know something, they should call you. Well, I know something, but for some reason, you never came to visit me.
Amber
Okay. Are you gonna tell me who you are, lady, or just keep talking in circles?
Grace
I'll tell you who I am just as soon as you convince me you're the real deal.
Daniel
The real deal? What do you mean by that?
Grace
Oh, is that your friend, the motorcycle guy? I thought you'd have a deeper voice.
Daniel
Deeper voice? Lady, you aren't exactly winning any friends here.
Amber
Have you been watching us? Was that you at the bridge the other day?
Grace
What bridge? I don't know anything about that.
Amber
So where did you see us right.
Grace
Outside my front window talking to my neighbor about the disappearance.
Daniel
Do you have some information for us?
Grace
About disappearances? Sure.
Amber
Do you know about Thomas Cracknell?
Grace
Sure, I remember Tommy. But that's not the disappearance you should be looking into. There's one that happened much more recently than that one that's way more important.
Amber
And who's that?
Grace
Before I tell you, you have to promise me something. Can you do that?
Amber
That depends on what you're asking.
Grace
Alright, I'll give it to you straight. I want to know that you're serious. Okay. I want to know that if I take the time to meet with you and tell you my story, that you'll follow through with it.
Amber
Why wouldn't we?
Grace
I guess I'm just a little jaded with this town. I've wasted a lot of breath over the years telling people my story and, well, nobody seems to care. Not one bit. So if you're one of those, I might as well hang up right now.
Daniel
We'll listen to your story. That much I can promise you. And we'll follow through.
Amber
As long as you're not pulling our chain, that is.
Grace
I'm not.
Amber
So go ahead, tell us.
Grace
Not tonight and not over the phone. Wait for my call in the morning. I'll tell you where and when.
Amber
Wait a second. You still haven't even told us who you are or anything about yourself.
Grace
Me? My name is Grace. And as for who I am, well, I might just be the only sane person left in this godforsaken town of Oakwood.
