A
So you want me to try this here in the middle of the library?
B
I had no idea where to try it. Like I said, I'm not an expert with this kind of thing. I was hoping you might have some thoughts. You're the one who's had the experience.
A
Experience? Daniel, I've had like a couple of dreams where shadows have appeared. Nightmares really. And that's about it. I have no idea how this shit works.
B
Dragisa appeared to you in broad daylight the last time, remember? You weren't asleep.
A
Yeah, but she came to me. I didn't initiate anything.
B
Like I said before, someone tells me this isn't a one way door. I think there's a chance you can open it from your side too.
A
Well, I like your confidence. Don't suppose you have any pointers for me?
B
There's nothing about it in the compendium.
A
No, no, I've never seen it mentioned.
B
In that case, I could probably come up with some suggestions. I guess maybe we can just do some trial and error.
A
You know who probably would know?
B
Roderick's gone. We haven't heard from him in days.
A
That's true. And he doesn't want us finding the shadow in the first place, does he? He thinks we're wasting our time, so he probably wouldn't help.
B
And apart from that, there's no mention of the mental link in the Compendium. It's possible Roderick doesn't even know. Maybe this ability of yours is unique.
A
The Compendium was written over a hundred years ago. I'm sure he's learned a few things since then.
B
Anyway, he's not around and we have no way of contacting him, so it's a moot point.
A
Okay, forget about him. Let's figure it out ourselves.
B
Right. So let's see. Maybe we should look into how this kind of thing is done. By psychics and mind readers.
A
Psychics? Come on, Daniel, you don't believe in that shit, do you?
B
Are you forgetting what you've learned about the Shadows in the last few months? Amber, there are things in this world that can't be explained by rational means.
A
Well, you have a point there. But most so called psychics I've seen on TV have failed miserably when put to the test. All of these crackpots bending spoons and shit like that. It's ridiculous.
B
I've got no doubt most of them are fakers. You're right about that. But what if some of them aren't?
A
Okay, so how do the real ones do it?
B
Normally you have to start with a personal item. Something that belonged to the person you're trying to reach. A piece of clothing maybe.
A
Oh, you don't happen to have a pair of the Shadow socks lying around, do you?
B
No such luck. And I don't see how we're ever going to find something like that.
A
The closest thing we've got is Christina's diary. We. Hey, hey. What if we use that?
B
The diary? Yeah, that never belonged to the Shadow.
A
But it did belong to Holoskin. Which is like the next best thing, isn't it? Maybe I can reach the Shadow through her.
B
Damn, that's not a bad idea, actually.
A
Okay, pass it over.
B
Here you go.
A
All right. Let's see here. Maybe if I put my hands on it like this. Why are you looking at me like that?
B
Sorry, that just looks a bit weird. Like you're warming your hands over a toaster or something.
A
Well, I don't know what the fuck I'm doing here. Daniel.
B
It's fine. It's fine. I don't mean to distract you. Just do whatever comes naturally.
A
Right. Naturally. Just how I always talk to invisible monsters in my head.
B
Try to concentrate, Amber. I don't think this is going to work if you're unfocused.
A
Look, do you mind if we go someplace more private? Maybe down the back where no one can See us. I. I would feel a bit more comfortable with this whole process if we were alone.
B
Fine by me. Let's go.
A
Yeah, this is better. Let's take a seat over here. Oh, and can you hit the light switch over there? I think this will go better without the lamp shining in my face.
B
There. How's that?
A
Yeah, that's fine. Okay, let's try this again.
B
You settle.
A
Um. Comfy? Yeah.
B
Okay. Here's the diary. Do whatever you want with it. Whatever you think is going to work.
A
I'm gonna try the thing with the hands again. That feels good to me. But don't laugh.
B
Yeah, of course.
A
Okay, let's see. Where are you? Christina? Talk to me. Nothing.
B
Give it time.
A
I feel stupid.
B
Everything's fine, Amber. Just relax.
A
I'm. I'm going to try holding the diary.
B
Go for it. Fuck. Do you feel anything? Anything at all?
A
No. Not a twinge.
B
Try clearing your mind.
A
Yeah, I'm already doing that. It's not helping.
B
Okay, so let's choose another tactic. Try thinking about Christina.
A
I don't even know her.
B
We saw photographs back at her house. Think about those and think about her bedroom. The posters on the wall, the smell of the carpet. The way the bed felt when you sat on it.
A
You really think that's going to help?
B
I don't know. But like I said, trial and error.
A
All right. Thinking. Thinking. The bedroom, the photographs. Still nothing.
B
Try leafing through the diary. Maybe looking at her sketches will help.
A
The bridge, the woods, the house, the man's face.
B
What happened? Did something come to you?
A
Yeah. Yeah, something came to me, all right. A goddamn headache. And that's all I seem to be getting out of this. Daniel. Look, we're wasting our time.
B
Are you sure? We haven't been trying that long.
A
No, seriously, I don't want to do this anymore. I feel like an idiot, and I just don't think we're getting anywhere.
B
Well, I'm not going to push you.
A
Do you mind if we head home? My head feels like it's been squeezed in a fucking vise and there's really no point staying. Let's take a break.
B
Sure, if that's what you want.
A
I do. Here, grab these. Let's go make some copies and go through more of this later.
B
Sounds fine to me.
A
I think from now on, I'll play to my strengths. Research, cross referencing and cold, hard facts. Now that's my domain, this psychic stuff. Well, maybe I'll just leave that to you. Damn, my head is really killing me now. How much further until we get Home. Daniel. Hey. Hey, wait up. Hey, what's the hurry? Oh, God. Can you slow down for a second? I think maybe I. I slipped and hit my head. It's. It's pounding like you wouldn't believe. Oh, damn it. Hey, wait. Where are you? Daniel. I. I. Oh, my God. I think this is it. Daniel. Daniel. I think I found it. It's the house. Look. Just like the one in the sketch.
B
What are you doing here?
A
Shit.
B
Who's there?
A
Who is that?
B
I said what are you doing here?
A
I. I don't know what you mean.
B
Get out. You don't belong here.
A
Who is talking? Show yourself.
B
Turn around and go while you still have the chance.
A
I. I don't know who you.
B
Get out. Now. Amber. Are you okay? You had another nightmare.
A
What? What? Where. Where the hell are we?
B
Back home. You said you were tired when you got back from the library. Remember? Your head was pounding, so you decided to nap here on the couch.
A
What time is it?
B
Mid afternoon. You were out for a few hours.
A
Oh, shit. I. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I. I think I remember now.
B
What happened? Is something wrong?
A
I. I had a dream. It was so real.
B
It wasn't Tragisa again, was it?
A
No. Not her. Not. Not this time. But it was.
B
What happened?
A
I was dreaming about the woods. I would be on the bridge. Although I'm not even sure it was a dream. I can't explain how, but it felt like I was actually there. I could smell the trees and the branches and feel the breeze on my face.
B
Where were you? How did you get there?
A
I don't know. I just. I just appeared there. In the dream.
B
What else did you see?
A
I found a clearing. And then the house.
B
The house? The one from Christina's diary, huh?
A
The same. I saw it as. As clear as day.
B
Where in the woods was this? Do you think you could find your way there for real?
A
No. No, I don't think so. I have no idea where it was. I just found myself at the location. Like I'd teleported or something.
B
Were there any landmarks or distinguishing features? Anything like that?
A
Not that I could see, but. Listen, Daniel. The house wasn't the only thing there. I sensed a presence, too.
B
A presence?
A
A man. He was telling me to leave. To get out of there while I still had the chance.
B
The shadow. He talked to you?
A
I think it was him, yeah.
B
What did he say? Tell me exactly.
A
Nothing meaningful. Just that I. I didn't belong there and that I had to leave.
B
Was he inside the house?
A
He was everywhere and nowhere. It was like I Was surrounded by him. And. And then right before I woke, something flashed in front of me. A face.
B
His face?
A
I guess.
B
So what did it look like?
A
Like the sketch in Christina's diary, Only older, I guess, and somehow stretched.
B
Stretched?
A
Yeah. I don't really know how to explain it. It was weird. And it only appeared for, like, a split second. I. I didn't get a good look at it.
B
But you're sure it was the shadow?
A
That's what my gut tells me. I don't have any proof, but yeah. Yeah, I think it was him.
B
So now we have a face and a voice as well.
A
Oh, and one other thing. I saw a plaque or something on the wall of the house.
B
A plaque? What about it?
A
A word was written there. I could see it clearly. The one from the diary. Greystone.
B
Greystone. So that's the name of the house itself?
A
Yeah, I think so.
B
But we've already searched for that name. There are no references to it anywhere.
A
Maybe if we keep looking, we'll turn something up.
B
Yeah, we might have missed something. Are you sure you're all right?
A
Nah, I'll survive.
B
You look like you've been put through the ringer.
A
Well, at least it wasn't for nothing. We made some progress.
B
Although we're still no closer to finding the location.
A
Maybe there's a chance that if I. If I think about it a bit more, I could somehow retrace my steps in the dream. Maybe there might be a clue I missed.
B
Yeah, that would sure help.
A
That will have to wait. Right now, my head is still killing me, and I'm gonna take a hot shower.
B
I'll get you a glass of water.
A
Why don't we try something a little stronger? Put some coffee on, and after I'm done in the shower, we'll talk.
B
No problem. I'm on it. Take your time, okay?
A
Oh, believe me, I intend to.

B
Typical small town, I guess. Seemed plenty like it in my time.
A
I've seen my fair share too, over the years. But Oakwood? I don't know. Something feels different.
B
Maybe it's just your perception. The world becomes a different place once you realize that monsters are real.
A
Yeah, maybe that's it. A few months ago, I wouldn't have thought twice about the quietude of a small country town. But now.
B
Are you sure you're okay walking to the diner? We could have taken the bike.
A
I'm fine. I wanted to walk so I could stretch my legs, get some air into my lungs.
B
How was the headache?
A
Better than it was this afternoon, that's for sure. I think the shower helped. And once I have a decent meal and a good night's sleep, I'm sure I'LL be okay.
B
Are you coming down with something, do you think, or was the headache caused by something else?
A
Something else?
B
It started coming on at the library. Right when you were trying to reach out to the shadow with your mind.
A
Yeah, it was around that time. Are you suggesting there's a correlation?
B
I don't know. Could be.
A
Well, I guess we'll find out the next time I try it. But I'm gonna have to take a break for tonight, if that's okay with you. I don't think I could put myself through that again.
B
Fine with me. Maybe there are some other ways we could locate the house in the woods. Save you putting yourself through the whole psychic ordeal.
A
Such as?
B
Do you think there might be aerial shots at the woods catalog somewhere we.
A
Could look, but I seriously doubt it.
B
If we could find some, do you think you'd be able to recognize the house in an aerial photo?
A
Probably. The thing about it was that there were no driveways, no roads leading up to it. It is literally just a house in a clearing in the middle of the woods.
B
And this is no log cabin, right? It's ornate with that Gothic architecture, the statues and all the trimmings.
A
And nicely kept grounds, too. It would definitely stand out.
B
If we can't find anything in the library, I wonder if we could, say, hire a helicopter or something.
A
A helicopter? You're joking, right?
B
Why not?
A
If we could even find a service that's available for charter out here. Those things cost a fortune. And it's not like the two of us are swimming in cash right now. I doubt we could afford even a 15 minute joyride, let alone a sweep of an area the size of those woods. That's potentially hundreds of square miles. It would take hours.
B
I think we could narrow it down. If we concentrate on the area around the bridge, for example.
A
I guess. But I still have serious doubts we could afford it.
B
Tomorrow morning I'll make some calls, see if there are any aerial services for hire. That's step one. Then if I find something, I'll ask about.
A
Hey, Daniel. What's the matter? It's.
B
It's bloodlust.
A
What? Are you sure?
B
Positive.
A
Are we in danger?
B
Not yet. It's strange, like it's faint, but growing stronger.
A
The shadow is finally coming for us.
B
No, I. I feel something nearby. Come on. Follow me. We have to hurry.
A
What is this? What are we doing here?
B
This is the place. I'm sure of it.
A
A gas station, Daniel. I mean, it's closed for the night. There's no one around.
B
I sense it. Amber. Something's about to go down right here.
A
If you say so.
B
You don't feel anything?
A
Maybe a little, but not as strongly as you obviously do. Although I'm not sure why the shadow would pick this place.
B
A deserted gas station at the edge of town. It's nice and secluded. No witnesses at this time of night.
A
Witnesses to what? It's just us.
B
Hear that? A car door. Someone is here.
A
Where? I don't see any cars.
B
It must be around the side of the station. Come on.
A
There it is. In the parking lot. And look, the driver's side door is open.
B
Did they leave already?
A
No. No. I can hear something. Someone's inside there.
B
They just got out. Looks like they're reaching back inside for something.
A
I think it's a woman. But that would mean it's not the shadow.
B
Could be a hollow skin.
A
Yeah, could be.
B
I've got the ax ready, just in case.
A
I've got the.22.
B
Wait. Someone else is getting out of the car. I think this one's a man.
A
What the hell are they up to?
B
They're walking away together, hand in hand.
A
Have. Have we got this all wrong, Daniel? Maybe it's just a pair of lovers trying to find somewhere to, you know.
B
If that's the case, they're in danger. Somewhere around here, there's a shadow and bloodlust.
A
Hey, I think the guy is drunk. He's stumbling. The woman is having to hold his hand. See? There. She just steadied him again.
B
He's out of it.
A
All right, what do we do?
B
The shadow might be ready to spring a trap any second. Let's see if we can get closer in case it shows itself.
A
Okay, I can see them more clearly from here.
B
I can see. See the man better now. Definitely not the guy in the sketch.
A
Yeah, no, not even close.
B
But the girl, she looks familiar. I think. Hey, I. I think that might be Christina.
A
No, I don't think so. Daniel, her face is. Oh, my God.
B
What is it?
A
That girl. She. She looks just like Jenny.
B
Jenny? Your sister Jenny? Yeah.
A
Her hair is longer, but it. God, it looks so much like her. And I know you're gonna say I'm imagining things, but.
B
Amber, it can't be her. There's no way.
A
Wait a minute, Daniel. What if. What if it is her somehow? We've both seen some weird shit lately.
B
And Jenny died back in Colton. Amber, Pete Davis killed her. You know that as well as I do.
A
What if he didn't kill her, but turned her into one of these hollow skins instead? And then somehow she ended up here.
B
That's not possible.
A
There could still be a part of her left in there. Daniel. We could save her.
B
Get a hold of yourself, Amber.
A
She's about to lead him into the woods. We're going to lose them.
B
God damn it. All right, we're going to have to step in here.
A
Okay? But, Daniel, don't hurt her. Do you hear me? Not until we're sure about what we're dealing with.
B
If that really is Jenny, then fine. I won't touch her. But we have to go after them now or we're going to lose them.
A
All right, let's go.
B
Hey. Stop right there. Don't take another step.
A
Leave me alone. Jenny. Oh, my God. Oh, my God, it is you.
B
What are you talking about? Amber? It's Christina. Christina Evans. The one in the photograph.
A
Jen, it's me. It's. It's Amber. Don't you recognize me? Don't touch me. Just talk to us, okay? We just want to find out what's going on here. Turn around and walk away. Forget that you ever saw me.
B
That's not gonna happen. Christina.
A
Daniel, what are you doing? Put the axe down.
B
Let the man go. Then get down on your knees. Amber, there's some rope in the backpack. We need to tie her up.
A
Tie her up? We can't do that.
B
Shit. The guy just collapsed.
A
Forget about him. Chen's making a run for it.
B
I think I can catch her.
A
Stop. Daniel, wait. What? You said you wouldn't hurt her.
B
Amber, let's go.
A
Daniel, please. Please, just stop and talk to me for a second.
B
Okay? It's done. There. She's gone.
A
Thank you.
B
But I'm telling you, Amber, it wasn't her.
A
I know what I saw.
B
Are you certain of that? Fuck.
A
What the hell?
B
Who's there? Where are you? I'm right here.
A
See? Hey, asshole, I've got a gun.
B
Yes, I'm aware of that.
A
Get your hands up.
B
The moment for violence has passed. I think you let it slip through your very fingers.
A
Shit. The guy's wearing a scarf, Daniel. He's hiding his face.
B
I told you I don't like revealing my face in public. Take it off, asshole. Let's see it. For you, Yes, I suppose I can do that. Here. See for yourself.
A
It's not him. It's not the guy in this. Catch.
B
You thought I was the shadow? Come now, friends. You need to give me more credit than that. Wait a minute. I know that voice.
A
Yeah, so do I.
