Chamminati
And we have got a case of.
Chloe Mao
White Lotus fever across our office. You really can hear people talking about it in all corners of the office. It's sort of. It's rare in the age of streaming to have something that everyone's collectively guessing about and sort of in on the same timeline. Next week is the finale and I really have no idea who's gonna be murdered. We actually started a, like a staff Google sheets for people to air their theories and they're very varied and I really appreciate that. I even asked Kerry McDermott, British Folks website editor, what her thoughts were and she brought up a new one, which was that she thinks Lisa is going to kill someone. That's a surprise. Which I like.
Jamilah Robinson
Wow.
Evan
Choma.
Chloe Mao
Is White Lotus Mania taking over the British vog office? Are you guys less invested?
Amy Lou Wood
I think it has. I. I'm. I'm trying to stay away from people talking about it because I'm really behind on my episodes.
Chloe Mao
Oh, interesting.
Amy Lou Wood
So don't reveal too much. I kind of need to catch it. I need to, like, spend a weekend catching up. I actually have been going to the theater a lot this week. I've been to the theater twice. Oh, my God.
Chloe Mao
What have you seen?
Amy Lou Wood
I went to see the Seagull. Ooh.
Chloe Mao
How was that?
Amy Lou Wood
It was amazing. It was kind of like a reminder that, like. Yeah. Why theater's so amazing.
Chloe Mao
Oh, I love to hear that. I loved British Vogue's feature on the cast. I thought the shoot was so great.
Amy Lou Wood
Yeah. Such an amazing cast. I mean, Kate, the sort of exquisite Cate Blanche. Emma Coren's in it. Cody, Fit mc. It's just got an incredible cast, but beyond that, it's just a wonderful piece of theater that the original is obviously the Chekhov, but it's really well adapted. I have not seen another staging of the play, but my mother saw it years ago, and she was sort of talking about it, and it was just so amazing how they seamlessly updated the script to make it fit for modern times. So anybody who's a creative person, like, can relate to the themes. And there are sort of bigger universal themes that sort of connect to now that feel. It just felt, like, really urgent. And I think that's so important.
Chloe Mao
What was the second thing you saw?
Amy Lou Wood
I saw a play called the Years, which is getting a lot of attention here. It has a reputation, a kind of controversial reputation, but I thought it was a really powerful piece of theatre, too. So I've had two quite intense theater experiences this week. I'm feeling very proud of myself. I'm feeling very cultured.
Chamminati
You're so cultured, Choma.
Amy Lou Wood
I'm feeling so cultured and smart, and I've got stuff to talk about.
Chloe Mao
What are you reading, Choma? Expand how cultured you are.
Amy Lou Wood
Yeah, I am reading. I've just. It's actually not a new book, but it's a. It's a writer I've been kind of. I've heard about for a long time and that we've recently profiled called Saba Sam. She's an amazing young writer, and she wrote this. I love short stories. I've always been into short stories. And she has a collection of short stories called Send Nudes. That's amazing. And that was originally. That was kind of like her. It's not a new book, so. But she has a new book coming out. But I wanted to kind of read her first book first, and it's so good. It's so fresh. And. Yeah, I just kind of. I'm not someone who is good at finding time to read either. I know you're. So. You have a reading practice?
Chloe Mao
No. It's so hard.
Amy Lou Wood
No, but you have a reading practice. I mean, you read before bedtime, which I should do, but. Yeah, my new bedtime ritual is kind of nuts. You're gonna. You're gonna really. I tell you, my bed.
Chloe Mao
Oh, my God. Okay, tell us. Tell us.
Amy Lou Wood
I have a new bedtime. I have a new bedtime ritual. I had someone who. Who recommended. This device is another kind of like, I. I have two devices. I'm using at night. And one is, it's called a sensate. It's kind of help helps to ease your anxiety and it gets you into a meditative state before you sleep and you put it on your chest and it vibrates. And then I also am using a. A PEMF mat with infrared heat. So I'm doing it all at the same time and it's meant to help with your inflammation. It's like higher dose. Have it. And anyway, I've been sort of trying out and yeah, that's my new bedtime ritual. It's insane. I feel like I'm like, like one of those like biohacking bro health bros. But that's me.
Chloe Mao
Yeah. I have to say White Lotus does not help my sleep regimen, my sleep hygiene because it's on at 9pm and I usually like to be winding down around 9:30 and I'm all amped up by the end of White Lotus.
Amy Lou Wood
Yeah.
Chloe Mao
Speaking of White Lotus, we are very excited to have Amy Lou Wood on the show today. She stars as Chelsea. She's so happy, heavenly. I'm so excited that we're talking to her.
Amy Lou Wood
Yeah, me too.
Chamminati
She was also Amy Gibbs in Sex Education.
Chloe Mao
Hannah Jackson, our fashion writer and I had a lot of questions about the latest episode of White Lotus and speculating what might happen in the finale. And so Amy is like her character, very enlightened and enlightening. So stay tuned for that. But first I want to hear more choma about what is going on in the UK this week.
Amy Lou Wood
Well, I mean, did we talk about the, the vintage? What did you do?
Chloe Mao
We talked about our vintage sale with Lila and Margot on Monday morning and it was fab. We had a really. Everyone had such a good time. It was such great vibes. Everyone was like standing in line around the block. I got a dries blazer that looks like the White Lotus credits.
Amy Lou Wood
No way.
Chloe Mao
It's like this like moody Lotus print chintz. But yeah, yours just from social looked fantastic and really fun and cool.
Amy Lou Wood
Yeah, I feel like we should be doing more of these. I see more of these in Vogue's future. I felt like it was kind of like what I do in my downtime anyway. So it didn't feel. Not the events ever feel like work, but it felt even more kind of like deep in on the obsessions that I already, you know, that I'm late night. I'm usually late, like scrolling on. Well, I've stopped doing that now because obviously I'm. I'm lying on a mattress sensate. I know I'm listening to, to Gongs and have a sense pebble is not letting you scroll. But it was really fun. I got a ton of things.
Chloe Mao
Oh, my God, you did.
Amy Lou Wood
Of course I did, because I'm. I'm like a vintage, like, nerd. I got like this 1997 Mew Mew cardigan, which is absolutely adorable, which I wore the exact next day and got lots of compliments about. So I was very happy with that. I got like a very iconic Phoebe Philo era Chloe top with the bananas across the. Across the boobs. That is quite fun and is very collectible. So I was very happy with that. I got this Vivienne Westwood. I'm very into Westwood at the moment, as you know. And I got this lovely black and very graphic Vivian Westwood kind of button up, bustier blouse top that I'm excited for. Oh, and I got this Martin Rose beer matte top which I have the. I have the hoodie, but I've always wanted the zip up top. So, like. Yeah, there you go. It's just me being complete, like overdoing it on the vintage side. But it was, it was well worth it and I loved it. So, yeah, it was a really good time. I mean, what else is going on in the world?
Chloe Mao
I am watching White Lotus. I'm watching Deli Boys. I'm watching. There's a new Agatha Christie coming out with Angelica Houston. That is something called, like, Towards Zero that I'm very excited about. It's extremely up my alley. And it is also the 250th anniversary of. Is it Jane Austen's death or of her birth? Yes.
Amy Lou Wood
I went to. Oh, fun fact. So I went to. I went. And you know who references the Queen? Because I went. Last week I forgot to mention that I went to Clarence House.
Chloe Mao
Ooh, I love when Choma casually like, yeah, drops that. She's been to Palaces.
Amy Lou Wood
Yeah. And it was very. It was super cool. It was a really cool crowd. And it's for this, this charity that the Queen support. Well, that the Queen established called the Reading Room, which is all about encouraging literacy and getting people to read. And you know, when you hear about the stats and exactly like what reading can do for your mental health and how little people now read because obviously we're sort of in this digital age and inundated and, you know, our attention spans are so small. But she's really, Her Majesty is doing a lot to really boost that and she gave such a fantastic speech and she mentioned Jane Austen and then she had all these artifacts. She had like the first, I think it was like the first Pride and Prejudice that whoever was the monarch at the time requested an advance copy of Pride and Prejudice and she had it there on display so we could all see it.
Chloe Mao
That's so fun.
Amy Lou Wood
Yeah. Yeah.
Chloe Mao
It's like getting an advanced copy of Harry Potter in the double Oz. Prada.
Amy Lou Wood
Yeah. And it was so cool. And she. They were all of these like Jane Austen artifacts on display in Clarence House. And it was a real treat to meet her, to meet the queen, which I did, and briefly. It wasn't the first time I've met her, but I met her again and she was lovely and an excellent host.
Chloe Mao
We also did a piece about how one of the hot trends for the spring are Jane Austen bangs, which I thought was very funny.
Amy Lou Wood
Oh, okay. Oh, yeah. I mean, they're also kind of like the micro. They're kind of like, kind of like micro curl curly bangs.
Chloe Mao
Yeah, exactly. There's been a lot. It sort of feels like, I think we talked about this a little last week, but it does feel like there's sort of, you know, spring culture preview in the air in New York as it gets warmer. The Frick has its grand reopening in a couple weeks and last night or two nights ago, they had their big reopening gala, which for the first time had dinner in the Fragonard Room, which is a big deal for very few people.
Amy Lou Wood
Okay. Oh, I do have a. I do have something I'm excited about this week, actually. That's news related. I don't know if you looked at the, the, the LVMH prize finalists, but there are so many great British designers on there that I'm excited about. Steve O. Smith, who's from the uk is fantastic. Tolukoco, who is one of my favorites and did one of the best presentations during London Fashion Week. And Tori Shu, who, who we've talked about on this podcast because she designed Zendaya, wore some of her looks on the red carpet during her Dune tour. And so it was really, really cool to see like three amazing names on that list. So we'll see, we'll see when the shortlisted names will be, will be announced, I guess on September 3rd. So yeah, like, I'm here for the Brits. I hope, I hope my guys get through that, through to that final round.
Chloe Mao
I'm excited. Oh, yeah, Wait, Choma. I want to talk about. Are people in the UK obsessed with the Beatles cast that was announced for these four films that are coming out in 2020?
Chamminati
Eight.
Amy Lou Wood
Yeah, they are totally obsessed. Are you kidding me?
Chloe Mao
It's Paul Maskell as Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan as Ringo. Harris Dickinson as John Lennon. Joseph Quinn from Gladiators, George Harrison.
Amy Lou Wood
Let's. Can we just pause to appreciate Harris Dickinson as John Lennon?
Chloe Mao
It's crazy. I feel like it was Maya who said that. It's almost like they took like pop culture AI and was like, who are the four people that the Internet is thirstiest for? And let's put them.
Amy Lou Wood
It is crazy. It is crazy.
Chloe Mao
And now we're thinking about who are going to be the Beatles women. Anna Kafo is working on a dream casting piece on that.
Chamminati
Amy Lou Wood is being rumored for.
Chloe Mao
Patty Boyd, and some people are saying that Anna Sawai would be great as Yoko Ono.
Amy Lou Wood
That's a good shout.
Chloe Mao
Okay, we will be back and digging into all things White Lotus with Amy.
Chamminati
Lou Wood in just a moment.
Hannah Jackson

Chloe Mao
And we're back with me and Hannah's conversation with Amy Lu Wood or Chelsea herself. Amy, we are so excited to have you here because I have to say we've reached peak lotus fever, which sounds like a venereal disease.
Evan
Seems appropriate, but really our office.
Chloe Mao
And I was saying to Choma, I co host before this, that I feel like it's so rare that there's a group experience where everyone's watching in real time because everything's streaming now and where the stakes are so high and people really don't. We don't know who's gonna die.
Jamilah Robinson
Do you know what? It's so lovely. I way prefer it. I prefer this format. I prefer the cathartic collective. We're all doing it at the same time because actually I'd seen six, up to six, but I haven't seen seven or eight.
Choma
No.
Jamilah Robinson
So I am now watching it with everyone.
Chloe Mao
Oh, my God.
Jamilah Robinson
So it feels really special and it's feels a lot less anxiety inducing than the binge because doing sex education and that being like it's all dropped at once and every, every TV show I've done has been dropped at once and everyone's at different points of the story and everyone's at. Whereas this time it's like you have a week to talk to people about that specific episode and like debrief and hear everyone's theories. And it feels just. So I'm an Aquarius, so I love being part of the collective.
Hannah Jackson
Yeah.
Jamilah Robinson
And it feels really soothing.
Chloe Mao
It's fantastic. I have to say, I find it a very. It's also. It's a fun office experience. We did, we polled our colleagues for their theories of who gets killed. I have to say, the most people I've talked to think that Chelsea is getting killed.
Jamilah Robinson
Do they?
Evan
So she goes, do they?
Chloe Mao
Do they?
Jamilah Robinson
Do they?
Evan
Poker face.
Chamminati
Very concerned.
Chloe Mao
But yeah, the theories have abounded.
Jamilah Robinson
I am so desperate for it to just be out. I got sent the scripts, so I have known the whole story when I was 29 years old. I'm now 31. You've been carrying, carrying the weight of these secrets for so long. Oh, my God. And I just need everyone to know now. I just need it to be a part of the collective. I just have to. I'm desperate. I actually cannot wait until Sunday for this exact reason.
Evan
You're so close.
Jamilah Robinson
I'm so close.
Evan
You, like, your character has such great facial expressions on the show. And I feel like we all love them. And they get so much chatter online.
Chloe Mao
Evan's cats loves them.
Jamilah Robinson
I love Evan. I love Evan.
Evan
Always in the roundup. Do you have a poker face yourself? You've been carrying this for two years.
Jamilah Robinson
I must do on some level. But I don't think. I mean, I. My face. I just. I saw these women in an elevator yesterday. And I'm saying elevator cause I'm American now. Cause I've been here for a week. But when I say lift, people think I mean lift, as in, like, taxi. Yeah, but in the elevator, it was these women who do Botox. We were talking about how it's obvious I haven't had it because of how expressive my head is and my eyebrows.
Chloe Mao
I think that's a real concern for actors. The two of us interviewed Chloe Feynman from snl, and she does a very famous Melania Trump impersonation.
Jamilah Robinson
Yes. I love it.
Chloe Mao
She got Botox on just on her chin because she wanted to make sure her forehead was still movable. But they did it slightly uneven so she couldn't do the whole of the face. It really. It really affected such a real career move.
Jamilah Robinson
Yeah, I'm really not. I'm, like, very anti Botox. Not as in, like, just people can do whatever the hell they want, but for myself, because, you know, a lot of my career relies on these facial expressions, as Evan has confirmed. You know, so I can't start freezing my face. It needs to move. But sometimes it moves too much. And it is weird. Sometimes I watch things back and I go, jesus, what was I. I didn't know. I wasn't aware that I was using my face that much in that moment. I actually thought I was being quite like. I remember getting, like, trying to do the whole still, you know. Cause a lot of people are very. They do that very still acting. And everything's kind of mumbled and everything's kind of like, still. And they look really, like, hot and cool.
Chloe Mao
That's not true.
Jamilah Robinson
And I'm just like, my face just so. I don't think I'll ever play a part that has a poker face. Cause I can't do it. Even when I think I'm doing it, I'm not doing it.
Chloe Mao
Do you play poker?
Jamilah Robinson
I don't play poker, but I wish I did.
Chloe Mao
I know. Me too.
Amy Lou Wood
Seems so difficult.
Jamilah Robinson
It seems so cool.
Chloe Mao
It does seem cool and difficult.
Jamilah Robinson
Yeah. Leslie Bibbs, best friend, who is one of the coolest women I've ever met. She used to have an all women poker game that she did in New York City. Yeah. And I feel like there should be a TV show about chic.
Evan
Should we shoot that?
Jamilah Robinson
Honestly, like, I feel like there should be a TV show every week, every episode would be a different poker player about a different one of the women.
Chloe Mao
Yeah.
Evan
Okay. Well, you heard it here first. Amy makes her writing and directorial debut and poker debut.
Jamilah Robinson
Yeah, Yeah.
Chloe Mao
I want to hear about being on set, as you were saying, with Leslie and her best friend. Did it feel like everyone was sort of on vacation together? Were you all hanging out afterward?
Jamilah Robinson
It felt. I think everyone thought it was going to feel a bit more like a vacation. And then it turns out we were working a lot and were living on the set, which is very unusual. You don't live on set. No work, life balance? No, there was none. It was the Truman Show. And I think it felt more like the time that we spent together and the debriefs and the drinks and that. It was so beautiful and gorgeous, but it felt less vacation and more like family. It felt like a kind of dysfunctional, glorious family. It was very. We needed each other. We really needed each other.
Chloe Mao
And did people bring their families, their friends, their partners?
Jamilah Robinson
Yes. And that was massively helpful. So, like when Pete, Michelle's husband, came with their kids and they stayed for a long time, that was really lovely because they brought the outside world in with them and actually gave us some context. And we were all kind of in this bubble and then they were there and it was very soothing. And anytime a kind of partner came or a family, it just kind of brought the real world into this bubble in a very helpful way. And also Sam, which was a big secret, but now it's not a secret. You know, Sam and Leslie, Sam Rockwell.
Chloe Mao
Who comes in, in episode five, I think.
Jamilah Robinson
Yeah, it was very lovely when he got there because Leslie and I had been. We're really, really, really close. And then. I mean, we still speak every day. And we were. Yeah, we were just hanging out the whole time. She's Scorpio's son. I'm Scorpio Moon. We're very much bonded. But then it was so lovely because when Sam got there, she became even more Leslie. Like, it was like I got an extra layer that came when Sam got there. Cause they're just the best couple. So that kind of towards the end, when he got there and we were all in Bangkok and we were in a city and we were kind of in the world.
Chloe Mao
Did you film in Bangkok too?
Jamilah Robinson
Yeah. So all the kind of intimate scenes were filmed in a studio.
Chloe Mao
Oh, interesting.
Jamilah Robinson
So they kind of rebuilt the villa rooms and we did them in a studio in Bangkok.
Chloe Mao
Oh, wow.
Jamilah Robinson
So we ended it and it felt like the right place to end it because it was a city and we could go, you know, we could be in the world, you know.
Evan
You talking about living in this bubble and the resort honestly makes me think of like the Bachelor a little bit.
Jamilah Robinson
Yes.
Evan
But, you know, you say that you and the cast needed each other. Can you talk a little bit about the challenges of being in that environment and how you leaned on each other?
Jamilah Robinson
Well, Mike loves reality tv, so, I mean, he loves it. He's been on Survivor, the Amazing Race, like, he loves it. And I love Mike because I think so much of his genius is down to the fact that he's not a snob. He will take references from Greek tragedy, but also Survivor, you know, so it's a. It's a real mix. And he's got such a range of references and interests and passions and he just likes what he likes and he uses all of it and he just channels all of it into these scripts and he barely takes any time to write them because he's just such a vessel for this whatever the hell's going. He's just stream of consciousness and it's there and there's so many amazing, clever details. But also he loves reality tv. And so it felt a bit like that we were kind of in a bit of a reality TV show. And there's fun and mischief and it's very. Mike is very playful and mischievous and childlike curiosity and. But the flip side of it is the work life balance is you are. It would be like night, everyone. I walk two steps and that's my house. Like, there's so many amazing parts of living in a beautiful hotel, but it becomes your whole world. Most of the places that we were in, it was only cast and crew, so the only people that you're seeing are each other. You can't cook. You get a lot of your self esteem from doing things that are mundane. So doing your own laundry, folding it, putting it away, making some food, walking to the grocery shop, buying the groceries. Like that's how you feel like a human. So then when you're. Everything's being done for you, your self esteem actually takes a bit of a hit. Actors are already quite infantilized like, you can't even go to the loo without it being, like, someone coming with you and standing outside the door.
Evan
Oh, my God.
Jamilah Robinson
So it's already. When you're on set, it's already like, everyone knows my every move. But the release of that is. At the end of the day, you're like, goodbye. And you get driven and you're in your own space and you can kind of decompress. That was not happening here. Everyone knew what villa we were in. It feels like you're being watched the whole time, like a reality TV show. So it did start to feel a bit mad, a bit nuts.
Chloe Mao
How long was it?
Chamminati
Seven months.
Jamilah Robinson
I remember seven. Wow.
Evan
That is unbelievable. All of us living together for seven months. I feel like it already, but, like.
Jamilah Robinson
Yeah, and it already does, like, jobs like ours, where our work is, like, our whole life already, pretty much. So then you add on. No, it actually is because you're never going home. You're never just leaving set. So, yeah, we needed a lot of. We needed to create home within each other.
Chloe Mao
Yeah.
Jamilah Robinson
Because we couldn't.
Chloe Mao
That's a nice way to put it.
Evan
I think it's so lovely the way you talk about your colleagues and now friends. And we heard a bit. Obviously, you've talked about your bond with Leslie and your Scorpio bond. We heard Walton Goggins was also involved in your Scorpio. Chloe and I are both Scorpio sons.
Chloe Mao
That's very exciting.
Evan
So we're very excited. I wore my necklace today.
Jamilah Robinson
Oh, my God, I love Scorpios.
Evan
She's so horrified. We have so many in this office.
Jamilah Robinson
Do you know what's really interesting is that. So park is a Scorpio, Walton's a Scorpio, Leslie's a Scorpio, And I just. I just love Scorpios. But then I also had this astrology reading, and I am basically Chelsea, who just looks for meaning in astrology, enneagram, all of that stuff. I'm like, tell me who I am. And then I had this zoom with this amazing astrologer. And she said, what's really interesting is where you are as well. The astrocartography of the place is scorpionic.
Evan
Oh.
Jamilah Robinson
So the locations we were in had heavy Scorpio energy. The cast had heavy Scorpio energy. So she was. As a Scorpio moon, you are very much underwater right now. You are in the kind of plutonic, rebirth, death, Scorpio vibe. And you need to, like, use your Aquarius to, like, go to the air, take a Step back, look at the macro, look at the bigger picture. And then you need to use your Taurus rising to go and stand on a beach and just feel your feet on the earth.
Evan
It's nice that you have that degree ground yourself.
Chamminati
Yes.
Jamilah Robinson
So it was very. It was very, very, very Scorpio, which is my, in many ways, my comfort zone. But also, you know, Patrick was so great because he's a Virgo, and he would just come in there with the. Just earthy, you know, be like, what have you been doing in your room, Amy? I'd be like, I've just been having so many epiphanies about life and, you know, and the. And the connections and the patterns and the this and the that. And he'd be like, why? And I'd be like, because it's. And I didn't really. And they'd be like, what you doing with them? Maybe you should take all those theories out for a walk. Should we go for a walk? And I was like, okay. And he's like, and maybe you should eat something. And I'd be like, oh, yeah, I should probably eat something. So it was he the one who.
Chloe Mao
Called you the fox.
Jamilah Robinson
So everyone kind of. So Charlotte started that. Charlotte Le Bon, who is also a Virgo, she was like, little fox. Little fox. Because everyone be like, she's just a little fox. Because I would come out, get scraps, and go back in. And we played this psychology game where you have to say, like, your three favorite animals, and the big reveal is your first choice is how you want to be seen, the second is how you are actually seen, and the third is who you really are.
Chloe Mao
Ooh.
Evan
I just played this at dinner with my friends a few weeks ago.
Jamilah Robinson
It's such a good game. Obviously, I've ruined it now because I've told what the spoiler is, but Walton and I both put fox as our last animal. So who we really are.
Evan
Soulmates.
Jamilah Robinson
Yeah. You have to be.
Chloe Mao
The first is who you want to.
Jamilah Robinson
Be, and second is how you are actually seen. So it's how you want to be seen, how you're actually seen, and then how you really are.
Chloe Mao
Okay, what was your first and second?
Jamilah Robinson
So my first. So we have to put. You have to say the animal and then the three reasons why. Oh, so I've got everyone's. By the way, on my phone. I've got every person in the cast.
Evan
Do you think they, like, really were accurate?
Jamilah Robinson
Every single one was so accurate. Like Michelle's. Michelle's last. Like, her third one was koala. And it was sleepy, a great mum and chill. And that is exactly. It was so funny because she was napping. She loves a kid so much. She is an amazing mum. And she's the biggest chiller. She's just the most. So everyone's was just weirdly accurate. But I think that my. I think how I wanted to be seen was. I think I put a monkey, like, cheeky, playful. And then how I was actually seen was a dog, loyal, friendly, and something loving or something. And then who I actually was was a fox, which was like Survivor. Q. Loyal, like interesting. It's a good game.
Chloe Mao
So were you the instigator?
Jamilah Robinson
Oh, yeah.
Chloe Mao
Okay.
Jamilah Robinson
Always the psychology games and things like that was always me. Always.
Chloe Mao
The run through will be back in a moment.

Chloe Mao
Was anyone on set a method actor who made it hard to relax with?
Jamilah Robinson
I think that we all became a little accidentally method. It wasn't even on purpose. It was just that there is no escape. So, like, there were nights where we would be out for dinner and people would be saying lines verbatim from the show and they didn't even know they were doing it. And it would be like, whoa, your character says that. So I think I was accidentally method. Cause like, Mia, who was doing my hair halfway through, was like, babe, you need to go home, because I don't know if I'm talking to Chelsea or Amy. Wow. And I was like, I don't know who I am.
Chloe Mao
So.
Jamilah Robinson
So. Cause also, we're all expressing different facets of Mike, so it becomes a bit like it does get a bit intense, but I think, you know, Walton was very. There was a lot of personal mirroring going on between Rick and his story to do with Thailand and the place. And it wasn't that he was particularly. I'm not ever gonna not be Rick, but there was a energy that he remained in. Not even on purpose, but, you know, he was in a very Rick place. I was then kind of like, naturally pushed into quite a Chelsea place, because Chelsea's the one that's like, come on, come on, come on. And there was a lot of times where Walton would kind of, you know, walk off and it would be very. Leave Mr. Goggins to do his thing, and I would just come over and be like, oi, oi, need to talk to you. And he was saying today that he was thankful for that because it was like, thanks for calling my bluff, because I don't really want to stand over here being the lone wolf in the same way that Rick doesn't really want to stand over there. And he's actually just very soft and sweet. But, yeah, I think that everyone just kind of apart from Patrick, like, Patrick is so not Saxon, but everyone else has got some kind of essential tie to their character. Not the behavior, necessarily, because we've not had the same lives as them, but the essence. Everyone's essence is pretty similar to their character.
Chloe Mao
Interesting.
Jamilah Robinson
Apart from Patrick, he's nothing like Saxon.
Evan
As we've heard recently.
Chloe Mao
I know there was a great headline yesterday that was like, maria Shriver says her son is nothing like Saxon, which is, like, such a mom sort of entering the chat.
Jamilah Robinson
But it's true. And I think it's really. It is funny because all of us are so essentially similar apart from him. And also, Saxon has been getting so much shit that I think it is like, just know that Patrick is not Saxon. We have to know.
Chloe Mao
I find one of the most endearing qualities of Chelsea is how forgiving she is. I wonder if you think her endless forgiveness for Rick is a power or her weakness.
Jamilah Robinson
So interesting that you asked me that, because I've been thinking a lot about this, and she taught me so much, playing her about where I can trip up in life. And it was very illuminating and helpful because the points where she started to really annoy me. And I never judged my character because that's like, the death of the performance and all that. But there would be moments where naturally I would be like Chelsea, like, something in my book would be like Chelsea. And it taught me a lot about myself. And I think that there's this stubborn belief in and that things are predetermined and they're written. And actually, whilst that can be magical and whatever, it also can be quite disempowering because it means that she's saying that she doesn't have choice, that she doesn't have free will. And that's where she and Rick are really similar, is they're both gone into, like. He's kind of saying, I don't have a choice here. This guy robbed me of my life and now I have to seek revenge. I don't have a choice.
Chamminati
Yeah.
Jamilah Robinson
And Chelsea's like, yes, you do. You could be here with me. That could be a choice. But then at the same time, she's going, I don't have a choice. Rick's my soulmate. There's nothing I can do about it. It's me and him. It's the universe. The universe has spoken. It's decided. So both of them are quite similar, and they are two sides of the coin. And both of them have prescribed to this notion that they don't have choice, that their lives have been written for them. And so I think that Chelsea's is a more likable version of that. So people are like, look how selfless she is. But actually, she's a great deflector. Like, she's always going, rick is so mysterious. You're so secretive. We don't know anything about Chelsea. She's so mysterious. So she puts all of her attention on him as a way to not be seen. And actually, I think that a lot of anxious, attached people are avoidance because they go for avoidant people so that they don't have to be seen. And intimacy is intu me see. And she's with someone who she knows is unable at this point in his life to fully see her. And that might suit her in a way. What's weird about Saxon and Chelsea is that Saxon really likes being seen by her, even if it's brutal. Yeah. And she's like, you're soulless and you should change everything about yourself. He's like, give it to me. Give it to me. And actually, I think that moment on the bed where she kind of hits him away is because he is weirdly, in his own way, seeing her. And I think that she likes to be the seer and not the scene. So I've been getting a lot of people coming up being like, why is Chelsea with Rick? Like, he's so mean to her. And I'm going, there's secondary gain from this. She gets to not really think about herself and her responsibility to herself and just go hell for leather on this life mission. In the same way that he's very blocked about his life mission. Like it's. They're both doing the same thing, but hers is more romantic and girly and so everyone prefers that version. But I think they are quite similar in the way that they have gone. I don't have a choice or a say in any of this. Well, you do. You've got free will, both of you. So I think it's both her blessing and a curse to me.
Chloe Mao
I have to say, one of my favorite scenes so far has been Chelsea turning away Saxon's advances with a stack of meditation books. And I thought, that's one of the best no thank yous that any young woman has ever instituted. What was it like filming that scene with?
Jamilah Robinson
That was my last ever scene.
Hannah Jackson
Wow.
Jamilah Robinson
That was the last scene I filmed. The first scene that I filmed was with Patrick. So the first one that we did was, how do I get a drink around here? You go up to the bar and you order one. And the last one was that the Saxon and Chelsea. So it was very emotional, actually. And it felt very emotional that we started it together and we ended it together. But that image sums up Chelsea. It's like, no, don't look at me. Look at these books instead. Look at these quotes instead. Look at star signs instead. Like, she does push people away with the thing that is seemingly intimate, but she's gnarly. Like there's stuff going on. But I think that doing that last scene, it felt like the perfect send off for Chelsea. Cause it felt like so her. And it was really emotional and Mike and I couldn't really.
Chloe Mao
Can you reach everyone now? Are there multiple group chats for the.
Jamilah Robinson
There are lots of group chats. I still speak to Leslie every day. I speak to Michelle loads and loads. I speak to everyone still. We're still very bonded. It was hard because I went back to England. Most people were either in New York or la. So there's been a lot of, like hanging out that has occurred without me. No FOMO and I have had quite bad fomo and Patrick's really good at being like, I'm here with everyone. We miss you. Oh, and we. But it felt sad and scary. As much as I wanted to get home, I remember doing that scene being like, this is the last one. And I'm so desperate to get home and see my friends and be in my flat and be in London. But I'm also terrified of Leaving these friends and this family and also going back into the real world. Cause I've essentially been a sim. I've been a sim for seven months, and I feel like someone else has been going pick up drinks, go to, walk to the beach, go for.
Chloe Mao
How was re entry?
Evan
Yeah, how do you leave? Hard.
Jamilah Robinson
All of us found it hard. Like, it was actually great because Michelle came to do a job in London, and so we went out for dinner and she was kind of like, hadn't seen anyone in so long. And I was finding it really hard to get back into my life. And then I saw Michelle and she was like, oh, same. And then I saw Natasha and she was like, same. And then you just realize that everyone's going through the same thing. And the more we spoke about it, the better it was. And then actually, Michelle and I had dinner and we were going, what is going on? This is so. Feels so heavy and so weird. And then as soon as the first episode dropped, we were like, do you feel like a different person? She was like, I feel, like, reborn. Because now it belongs to them or it belongs to all of us, rather than us. And it felt like it's no longer our thing. And actually a weight lifted. It was like, oh, it's the world now. So it doesn't feel as heavy. But it was very hard re entering.
Evan
What was the most challenging part for you of reentering your world?
Jamilah Robinson
I think it was being away from the people. Cause it was this weird thing where, like, I was homesick there and then I was homesick when I got home. So it was like the homesickness was unavoidable. It was weird. It was like, even I got homesick the other week for Bangkok. I was like, oh, my God, I want to go home. And then I was like, wait, what? Home? That isn't home. London's home. And. And then you start to go, well, actually, nowhere's home. It's you. Like, home is inside us. So you create it. Wherever you go, you are gonna miss times of your life and you're gonna miss places and you're gonna miss people basically constantly. And that is like a sad truth of life, is that you're probably gonna feel homesick always and you just have to find home in yourself. But, yeah, there's been a lot of wizard of Oz feelings going on, I'm sure. Like, I want Oz back, but I also don't want to be in Oz, because Oz isn't real. Kansas is real. ATM is real.
Chloe Mao
Of the great outfits back to Kansas.
Jamilah Robinson
We didn't bring any of that.
Chloe Mao
You didn't save anything.
Jamilah Robinson
I didn't even bring any real.
Chloe Mao
The coconut bikini.
Amy Lou Wood
No.
Chloe Mao
We are big fans of that coconut bikini.
Chamminati
Yeah.
Jamilah Robinson
Everyone loved that. And it was so. Alex was so happy that I loved it. Costume designer, because she was like, I know you're probably not gonna wanna wear this in a million years. I said, give it to me now. I am wearing that coconut bra. And then everyone loved it.
Evan
It was major.
Jamilah Robinson
I didn't have. I don't have any Chelsea things.
Evan
Did you take any souvenirs from set?
Jamilah Robinson
The thing that was on my chair that said Chelsea, so I've got that. I made photo albums for me, Leslie and Walton, so we all have photo albums, so I've got that. But, yeah, I kind of didn't. It's such a good point. I've not even thought about the fact I don't have any Chelsea items.
Evan
We're all about lifting.
Chloe Mao
Yeah.
Evan
Don't stick your fingers.
Jamilah Robinson
But it's not like me to do that because on another job that I do called Daddy Issues just wrapped on it and I took all of Gemma's clothes. I was like, I'm taking all of it. And the costume designer was like, yeah, I have it all.
Evan
My God.
Jamilah Robinson
And I loved it. And I always take stuff. But weirdly, with Chelsea, I just left.
Chamminati
Chelsea's wardrobe is tough to wear in London.
Evan
Yeah. You can't do the coconut bra on many occasions.
Jamilah Robinson
I think what I want is, like, the necklace, the iconic Chelsea necklace, the stay gold one. I hated the parrot skirt. People liked it, but I hated it because it was so hot. Even the Thai crew were like, this is hot. This is. Oh, well, they were like, this is weirdly hot.
Evan
You got the approval.
Chamminati
Yeah.
Jamilah Robinson
They were like, this is really, really hot. And so wearing, like, that fabric long skirt was just. Oh, it was not attractive. It was like, I need air on me. But some of it was my clothes as well. So the pink nightie that I wear, so cute. That's mine. So I brought that with me. But I'll tell you what I love the most. The black dress with the sequins on it.
Evan
Oh, my God, that was so good.
Jamilah Robinson
And then the shoes with the bow. Why did I not ask for any of this stuff? I need to ask for it. I'm going to Skylax tonight.
Evan
I think you need that black sequin dress.
Chloe Mao
Yeah, that dress is great.
Evan
In the last episode, I was like, excuse me.
Jamilah Robinson
Yeah, I know. That was my favorite look.
Evan
That was great.
Jamilah Robinson
Yeah.
Evan
You mention your upcoming project, and of course, taking clothes. But can you tell us a bit about what you have coming up?
Jamilah Robinson
So I just wrapped on Daddy Issues Series 2, which is just a really funny, silly show that I love doing. And it's the most comforting place to be is on that set. And then I wrote a show.
Evan
Oh, my God.
Jamilah Robinson
And that'll be coming out this year. Oh, that's a BBC. Yeah. It's called Film Club, and it is about a girl called Yvie who can't leave the house. So she has a film club that she hosts every Friday with her best friend who she's secretly in love with. And it's very rom com. And I am very much about bringing the classic rom coms back. Like Broadcast News.
Chloe Mao
What's your number one top favorite rom com?
Jamilah Robinson
Broadcast News.
Evan
Oh, good.
Jamilah Robinson
And it's not really a rom com. I like rom coms that aren't quite rom coms, but they are rom coms. Like Broadcast News. When Harry Met Sally, obviously. Very, very close second Sleepless in Seattle. Basically. Anything Meg, like Holly Hunter and Meg Ryan are, to me, just the best people that have ever lived. Yeah. And I miss them. And I have a whole thing about. We need to go back to having that movie that you. I feel like TV achieves it a bit more. But like, you know, the movie that you just rewatch over and over again on the plane.
Chloe Mao
Yes.
Jamilah Robinson
On a Sunday, you put your cozy jumper on, you sit on the. You get some popcorn, and you watch Sleepless in Seattle or you watch. There's no limit on how many times you can watch those movies. I want to. That would be my life's mission, to just write a movie that is like a Sleepless in Seattle or just a classic. Comforting. Like, the scripts are so. And the dialog is so good. And I think that we've missed that a bit because rom coms have turned into the kind of like, trope y. Everything is just more Nora Ephron. Yeah, exactly. So I want. That's. That's what I want to do.
Evan
I feel like we found the woman for the job. So I think, thank God it's in good hands. The genre.
Jamilah Robinson
Yeah.
Chloe Mao
I have to ask about the rumors that we've been very excited about about you playing Pattie Boyd. All you can say is, but I know you have a lot of Beatles fans over here.
Jamilah Robinson
Yeah.
Chloe Mao
Well, who's your Beatle? Just who is Amy's top Beatle?
Jamilah Robinson
That is the hardest question, because I am obsessed with them. But I do have to say that. John.
Evan
You're John. Girl.
Jamilah Robinson
I'm just. I'm just like, there's something. And it isn't that I particularly like him as a person. It's more that he intrigues me the most. Like, did you watch the Lost Weekend as well?
Chloe Mao
No, but we were talking about that this morning.
Jamilah Robinson
You should watch it. It's so good. And May is so cool. And that whole. I just find his lore I find the most interesting. He's very complicated, and so he's the one who intrigues me the most.
Evan
Well, now we have to ask about your culture diet. Have you been reading, watching, binging, listening, Anything?
Jamilah Robinson
I am so excited to catch up on stuff because I've really been out of the loop. Like, when I was in Thailand, I didn't watch anything because I was very much kind of like, I'm in this story and I have to be in this story. So I didn't watch anything.
Evan
I heard you're a girls fan.
Jamilah Robinson
Only recent.
Evan
So what girl do you think you are?
Jamilah Robinson
I mean, it's. It's not good to be any of them, is it? No, but if I'm really honest. No, but I think I'm Hannah.
Evan
As a Hannah, it's okay.
Jamilah Robinson
Are you a Hannah?
Evan
Well, I think I'm.
Chloe Mao
Right now I'm probably a Marnie, but. Oh, Chloe, please.
Jamilah Robinson
No, you're not a Marnie.
Evan
I don't think anyone's a. That's terrible.
Jamilah Robinson
And sometimes I feel like I can be a bit Shosh.
Evan
Yeah.
Jamilah Robinson
But I think I'm mainly. I think I'm probably Hannah.
Evan
Sun rising, break it down and your moon. I'm getting like a little sprinkle of Jessa from you.
Jamilah Robinson
My gosh.
Evan
Just a sprinkle.
Chloe Mao
Though I do think Chelsea is Jessa.
Evan
Chelsea has the free spiritedness, but I think you have the groundedness of a Shoshana.
Jamilah Robinson
Thank you, Amy.
Chloe Mao
Thank you so much for joining us. We are edge of our seats for this weekend. I know you are too. Want to share it with the world?
Jamilah Robinson
Thank you.
Chloe Mao
All right, that's it for the show.
