One of my favorite parts about springtime is switching up my bedding. This season I found fresh fabrics and colors for my space from Brooklinen and I can't wait to enjoy them and the breeze through my finally open window. Now I have two toddlers and I recently asked 5 year old Arthur what his favorite thing to do is and he said watch Winnie the Pooh in mama's bed on the weekend, which is something he's allowed to do. He's not allowed to do that on the weekdays because it is a manic rush out of the house to get and I have to say if you don't switch up your bed clothes and it's getting not frigid out, you're getting a little warm. I'm Chloe Mal and today I am joined by Vogue's Living editor Liam Hess and fashion news editor Jose Crialas Unzueta. Liam, do people ever make a joke like you're really living?
Liam Hess
People are confused as to what living entails. It makes it sound like either all of the other editors have died or and I'm the last one, Vogue's Living editor.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
That's kind of fabulous.
Chloe Mal
Well, it's not because Elise being the senior living she's in charge of retirement communities I make that joke like once every six months on the podcast. She loves it.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Anywho, Good morning, Angels.
Chloe Mal
Liam, hello. It was just announced that Bella Ramsey, the British actor, is British Vogue's cover star. And you and Shoma got to talk to them all about it. Tell me everything.
Liam Hess
We did get to speak to them. I should probably start by saying that I had nothing to do with this cover. This was a British Vogue production and.
Chloe Mal
But you're a fan.
Liam Hess
But I am a fan. And it was a fabulous cover. It's a really great story and there are some beautiful images by the brilliant legendary Italian photographer Paolo Reversi and styled by IB Camara. And the photos are gorgeous. They have a real reach quality to them. Bella has such amazing kind of presence and poise in the images and the styling is really beautiful. They're wearing Burberry on the COVID A custom look, I believe. It's a really special story and it coincides with the impending release of the Last of Us, the post apocalyptic zombie TV show, which I am quite a big fan of actually. It's not usually so good.
Chloe Mal
Okay, it's not.
Liam Hess
Oh, you're a fan as well, Jose.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Yeah, I love. I've never actually played a video game, but I.
Liam Hess
Me neither.
Chloe Mal
Based on a video game.
Liam Hess
Yes.
Chloe Mal
Interesting.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
But I'm a huge fan of the show.
Chloe Mal
My only cultural connection to the show is that I feel like Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey both had great red carpet looks around it.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Yeah, no, they looked amazing and they have amazing co star chemistry in the show. They really a very great duo. So I'm super excited for the season. And of course Bella was a breakout in Game of Thrones. Right. That was kind of like their breakout role which we were also all living for.
Chloe Mal
Bella also got nominated for an Emmy for the show, which is fab headlines of the week. I feel like a lot is happening over here. Poor Nicole Phelps and Sam Sussman got back from like working 24 hour days in Europe and the next day was the Demna leaving. Balenciaga going to Gucci.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Daria Vitaly. Daria Vitali, formerly of Mimi, going to Versace.
Chloe Mal
Jose, why did all of this happen? Bang, bang, bang.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
So every few years there really is like, you know, a few six months to a year where like there is a big readjustment in the industry. So this isn't out of the ordinary. It also happens a lot at the beginning of the year. It happens a lot right after fashion month. Like it's a good time to sort of break some news for a lot of these brands because they've just had their big public push for a show, whatnot. This is also at the beginning of the year. Right. A lot of these brands are kind of like setting themselves up for September. You know, former Voguette iconic legend Kandy Pratt's Price used to say that September is a January of fashion. And you know, she's right. That's kind of where our kind of like school year resets, where we really start. Also, there has been a really big readjustment period in fashion, obviously.
Chloe Mal
I mean, it feels unprecedented, frankly.
Bella Ramsey
It is.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
It does feel unprecedented. I think a lot of it has to do with the market. Right. The US alone has lost like millions of luxury consumers. So there's a lot of questioning of like, what the hell do we do now. Right? Yeah. You know, Gucci had its own readjustment kind of period after Alessandro Michele. They hired Sabato Dasar. Note that was a change in direction. It didn't work for them. So now they're readjusting once more. So, you know, Demna had been at Balenciaga for just under a decade or just over a decade, I think. So now it also feels like it's time to maybe shake things up over there.
Chloe Mal
The winds are turning.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Exactly. But you're not going to let him go because he's the star of the caring establishment right next to Anthony Vaccarello Saint Laurent. So they kept him and they put him in Gucci. Jonathan Anderson just left Loewe also after a decade.
Chloe Mal
Yes, that was the big news yesterday. First thing, Paris time Monday morning was announced on St. Patrick's Day. Our Northern Irish star was leaving Loewe officially. Yes. This has been the worst kept secret in fashion. Jose, tell us what this augurs.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
So basically, I mean, it is really interesting to sort of see Demna. Alessandro Michele, who was, you know, a Gucci, left in 2022 and is now a Valentino, and Jonathan Anderson, who was a lawyer for just under 11 years. I think the three of them have sort of helped define the second half of the 2010 is in fashion. Right, Jonathan? Of course this fashion has a gossip problem at the moment because there are a lot of movements. Everyone just kind of loves to break embargoes or just kind of speculate Jonathan's departure. Loewe was of course the worst kept secret in the industry for the past, I want to say, three months.
Liam Hess
I don't know about you guys, but I feel like when I saw the announcement I was like, didn't that already happen?
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Very much so.
Liam Hess
And it's sort of. I'm losing track at this point of who's coming, who's going, and especially all of that noise on social media of people speculating. Exactly. I can't. I make heads or tails of who's where right now. I need everything to sort of settle down and then I can take stock of it or.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
What's also really interesting about this, Liam, is that because so many people on social media, kind of the moment they have, there's a strong enough rumor, they're like, oh, that's happening. For example, Eddie's Le man going to Gucci was sort of like a very strong speculation, but people just kind of assumed that that was happening. So when the Demna news happened, everyone was like, wait. Like, no one kind of speculated that this one would happen. So it was the biggest shock. Right. With Loewe, I think Jonathan turned that brand, you know, it was like a small Spanish leather goods label that LVMH.
Chloe Mal
Had had before he got there. I feel like 80% of the world were pronouncing it lows.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Yeah. It wasn't a household name. Right. And all of a sudden, Jonathan goes there in 10 years, transforms it into this kind of like blockbuster label that's dressing Rihanna for the Super Bowl.
Chloe Mal
Right.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Like, it's something. It's really something wild to see. So wherever he takes his influence next, he's rumored to be the next designer at Dior. Should be really interesting. But it's also more interesting to see who's going to step into the Loewe shoes now.
Liam Hess
Yes.
Chloe Mal
I mean, if I didn't work at Vogue and know certain things, and I was just a fly on the wall who happened to have been in Paris and Reid Puck or, you know, business of fashion, Women's Wear Daily. I would say that maybe the Proenza schooler, former designers Jack and Lazzaro were heading to Loewe.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
So that is currently the biggest and the strongest rumor, in a sense. I think also what happened is that Jack and Lasseur left their own label, Princess Cooler, which they founded is named after their mother's maiden names. Right. Like, that is like a very strong move to make. They left their label right before New York Fashion Week. So you only leave something like that if you're going somewhere. Right. It's kind of like the assumption. So they seem to be poised to be the next ones, but we'll see.
Cho Minardi
Indeed.
Chloe Mal
I was interested in the nostalgia and the sort of quite emotional reminiscences people were sharing about Jonathan at Loewe and what he had, you know, Jose was talking about how he had really changed the perception of this brand, but also he had such a personal output on it. And it was so. It so went beyond fashion. To me, it really was an example of fashion defining the culture. And Liam, I feel like you've written about the Loewe Craft Prize a bit, but what are some of the other ways that Jonathan's sort of dipped into the culture at large rather than just making clothes?
Liam Hess
Well, I think from the very beginning, he was quite adamant about the fact that he didn't just want Loewe to be another luxury brand. And I think he even referred to it as a cultural brand as opposed to a luxury brand. And I think, you know, the craft prize was a very important facet of that. Working with these amazing artisans, makers from all around the world, to really kind of lead culture as opposed to follow it as a brand. And I think it comes through in, you know, he would always have the most exciting, most unexpected celebrities sitting front row during Fashion Week. Everyone, you know, from Jennifer Coolidge to.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
You know, Daniel Craig.
Liam Hess
Yeah, exactly, Daniel Craig and the campaign last year. And I guess as well, his kind of forays into costume design are an important part of that. Over the past few years, he's worked with Luca Guadagnino on challenges, of course, and queer. I feel like so many brands right now, it feels like they're constantly chasing what their customer, what their consumer wants, or what they think their customer or consumer wants. Whereas Jonathan has never been afraid to sort of dictate the terms of what his customer might want. You know, he's never chasing. He's always. He sees it almost as a kind of responsibility to like, introduce his fans, his followers, his community to these artists, to these writers, to these cultural figures that, like, they might not be familiar with. And I think. I think it's a kind of respecting of his customer's intelligence that people really respond to. And you know, you buy. Even if you're just buying a Loewe bag, you're buying a Loewe keychain, whatever it might be. It's like you're sort of buying into that world. And that is incredibly appealing. You know.
Chloe Mal
Laird and the rest of the Road and I team are publishing their trend reports, which I always look forward to. Cause I feel like it's such a comprehensive distillation of what we saw for the past month on the runways. And Laird's puns obviously delighted me. Her suit pursuits really made me lol. And there was a lot of fur on the Runway. Also so many feathers, I forgot when she compiled them all. Which really brought me back to my beloved pigeon walking the Runway at Chanel. And I'm very into the Harlequinod sort of clown collars that were at Alta's McQueen Chanel. And I liked that. The way that Laird spun the sort of Grecian draping that we saw everywhere was that it was similar to Christo and Jean Claude, which it's true. There's a revival right now, Liam, in New York at the Shed. That's an exhibition with all the sketches and images from the gates, which was the installation in Central Park 20 years ago, which I have such specific memories of being so magical. I remember going when I was in college, Marlee was like, oh yeah. I went as a child. I was like, okay. But. And then Margot wrote a really funny piece this weekend on the Miu Miu bullet bras and how to source them and buy them and very popular on vogue.com apparently many people want to wear the bullet bras. I also a big moment for the fashion team over the weekend was that Timothee Chalamet is really taking method dressing one step further. He bought Bob Dylan's jacket at auction. And so you know what? A complete unknown continues to be known.
Liam Hess
I know, I love that Oscar season's over, but Timmy still Timmy season, it's going.
Chloe Mal
I do feel like everyone came back from shows or ended Fashion Week and sort of tried to take a break and caught up on TV this weekend. And I want to know, Liam, what.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
You are watching, I will say. If Liam says watch it, I will watch it. He's one of the only people who I actually listen to. So what are you watching? What am I watching next weekend is a better question.
Liam Hess
That is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about me really, first of all, and well, I'm so flattered. Honestly, I take that compliment.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
I did love Rivals when you told me to watch Rivals.
Liam Hess
I know, me too. I told Chloe as well. Adolescence, it's been a huge hit in the UK and I feel like it's already making its way over the pond to be a big hit in the US as well.
Chloe Mal
It's a British show.
Liam Hess
Netflix, It's a British show and it's made by a British team and it stars and was co created by a brilliant actor called Stephen Graham who was in this is England, the film and the TV shows. And it's about. I still haven't watched all of it yet. It's about a 13 year old boy who is accused of murdering a schoolmate of his. A girl. And I think one of the really astonishing things about it is the way it's filmed. Each episode is one take, and it's obviously very wild. Cleverly and carefully choreographed because it moves through multiple locations. The camera work is pretty insane. The acting's phenomenal. It also stars Aaron Doherty, who I personally loved as Princess Anne in the crown.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
She's amazing in the crown.
Liam Hess
Yeah. I mean, her outfits in the crown.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Were everything, but also like the delivery.
Liam Hess
Anyway, everyone. Yeah, adolescence is what everyone's talking about right now. I have yet to finish it, but I've heard amazing things. So I would definitely say that that is the show to check out right now.
Chloe Mal
All right, spoiler alert. The brothers kiss on the White Lotus. And honestly, I'm bored.
Liam Hess
I will say. I think I read somewhere someone pointed out that everybody remembers. I think because the White Lotus is an anthology series and every season it's in a completely different location with pretty much an entirely new cast. Your memory of the previous season is always the memory of the whole season, if that makes sense. You're remembering the season from beginning to end. And so you're a few episodes into this new one. It's like starting a whole new show. So you can only really judge it when you've got to the end of the show. And I will say that having seen a couple of episodes ahead, it really hots up in these final films.
Bella Ramsey
Ooh.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
I mean, if Liam says it hots up.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
I'm like, if Liam says it, then I'll believe it.
Liam Hess
I will say that the pace accelerates, it gets more exciting. You know, it's a bit of a slow burn the first half of the season in a way that I don't think is unearned. The further you get into it.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
I mean, it is getting really interesting. I think. My one note, I love the show. I think Mike Wyatt is brilliant. I think the way it's written is incredible. But I do also think that now it is very aware of the fact that it goes viral and that it is very aware of the fact that we all collectively love the one liners.
Chloe Mal
Yeah.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
So now there's. I do think I do sense, or perhaps it is my own awareness of the fact that it does go viral. Right. Maybe it's a little too meta.
Chloe Mal
But, like when Parker Posey is like, you're moving to Taiwan, I was like, well, this is just a one liner. We're going to see closed capture.
Liam Hess
That was.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
That's. That's a thing.
Liam Hess
That was a great impression.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
It is. Yeah. You. You really tore.
Chloe Mal
I'm sort of not that far.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
But I do think some. Some of it. And to be fair, I felt the same way about the latest season of Industry. For instance, I was like, why do we keep mentioning that a porter. Or like, you know, like some moments I was like, oh, we're making this for the Internet. And I think that's fair. I think that's fine. You know, we all have to sell things. But I do think it's one thing that I've sort of become very aware of while watching the show. I'm like, oh, was this made for entertainment or was this made for virality?
Chloe Mal
I do find that it's the three blonde bitties who I find is the most obviously personally relatable. But I do feel like they're the new Sex and the City cast where it's like, ugh, she's such a Carrie Coon.
Liam Hess
Yeah, I'm obsessed. I also love the fact that nobody knows can remember all three characters names. Everyone is referring to them as like Carrie Coon.
Chloe Mal
Totally.
Liam Hess
And the Republican, you know?
Bella Ramsey
Yeah.
Chloe Mal
To me, Sam Cochran, my friend was like, ugh, you're totally a Lori when she's drunk. And I was like, from Little Women. And I was like, oh, Carrie Coon.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
I'm screaming.
Chloe Mal
Well, speaking of the last living editor, we are now onto the last of us conversation. I'm screaming with Liam Hess Chominati and Bella Ramsey. And we'll be back in a moment.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Foreign.

Bella, congratulations on your British Vogue cover. We are so excited to share it with the world. I remember being on set with you and Paolo Reversi, incredible iconic photographer IB Kamara, who styled it. Tell us a little bit about what it was like working with Paolo. Cause obviously Paolo is such a specific way of shooting. It's all natural light. His studio is so special. How did it compare to other, other editorials that you've done before?
Bella Ramsey
It was so amazing. It's like nothing I've ever experienced before. It felt was very like still the whole time. Everything was very measured and very like thought out and still and gentle and like soft. Yeah, it was really amazing. I've never experienced anybody like him or a shoot like that. He did the thing where he like turn all the lights off, pressed, I guess it was like a slow shutter speed and then lit me with like torches from behind and in front. And then the image that's created is just this like painting. It was so cool. He's. Yeah, he's so special. I feel so lucky that I got to work with him. It was a really special day actually. Yeah.
Cho Minardi
And I felt the fashion was pretty good. I mean, you're wearing this incredible Burberry custom Burberry suit on the COVID How did you like the clothing?
Bella Ramsey
When I first saw the pictures and stuff and saw them on the rack, I was like, whoa, this looks like nothing I've ever worn before. I don't know how this is gonna. I was a bit nervous. I was like this, I don't know how this is gonna feel. And then tried it on and felt like a almost Like a little like Prince. And so everything was very IB really wanted it to be like, romantic. And in the zooms I had before with him, he was saying this like, romantic, romantic, romantic. And then I really understood what he meant when I got there and I tried it on. Yeah, everything was like really elegant, but with really interesting shapes. Yeah, it felt really cool. To where his vision was amazing.
Cho Minardi
It sounded like it all. It was a really special day.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah, it was, it was. I always. I was not really nervous in lead ups to shoots, but I like never really want to do them. No matter what it is. I'm like. I don't feel. It feels quite uncomfortable the whole lead up. But then the actual day was absolutely incredible and just I was taken care of so well and everyone was just. It was one of the most like, creative days, I think, ever. And to be like sort of the canvas for everyone's creativity was so special and such an honor. Thanks for having me.
Cho Minardi
Oh, my goodness. That's so, so lovely to hear. It's just really, really honored to have you.
Liam Hess
When you're doing a shoot like that, do you step on set aside Bella, or do you build a character in your mind and approach it with the mentality of that character wearing all of these fabulous clothes?
Bella Ramsey
I definitely step on as Bella because the connections that I make and stuff on the day, I want them to feel genuine and like them. Me and these connections I'm making with people like Paolo are like. Yeah, just genuine and real. So I'm definitely Bella. But there's an element of when we're actually taking the photos in the outfits, then there's sort of this character sort of just naturally comes out of depending on the outfit. So, like, costume and film is such an important thing. It can really change the game and just change like posture and stance and this like princely vibe definitely came out. There were certain ones that felt. It felt very deep the whole day. And all of the photos and the way that Paolo worked and the way.
Cho Minardi
That we worked together didn't use any. Any light lighting.
Liam Hess
Wow.
Bella Ramsey
Yes.
Cho Minardi
It's all natural light, just angled towards the windows. It was quite fascinating watching.
Bella Ramsey
It's amazing.
Liam Hess
I guess that's how they have that beautiful texture to them, all of the images. Right?
Bella Ramsey
Yeah. And in his studio that he's had for like 30 years in Paris.
Liam Hess
Oh, really?
Bella Ramsey
So cool.
Cho Minardi
Yes. The space is amazing.
Liam Hess
Yeah.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah, it was really special. There was also an element of like, me and Paolo. I didn't. I don't speak. I wish that I did any, like, French or Italian, really, which were like, his main languages. So we didn't. We chatted a bit, but I feel like most of our communication wasn't verbal, which was really special to have that with someone like him. Just. I think we definitely just, like, felt each other and each other's presence in the room. And then it was almost like this silent dance. It was. Yeah, really. He's really amazing. What a legend.
Liam Hess
And obviously, I have to ask about the Last of Us, because I am personally a very invested viewer and I'm very excited about season two. I was lucky enough to watch the first episode, and it's out on April 13, which is very exciting. Take me back to the beginning of your relationship with Ellie as a character. Cause obviously she's a very intense character, very dialed in. And your performance in season one earned you an Emmy nomination, so congratulations.
Bella Ramsey
Thank you.
Liam Hess
And given the character already existed within the world of the video game on which the show is based, how did you go about making Ellie your own?
Bella Ramsey
Well, I think my relationship with her definitely started through. Even in the self tape, I felt a real connection to her. Like, her skin almost was already within me, which was cool to have that. Sometimes it's really special when that happens with a character where they just feel like a part of you already. And obviously there's this incredible source material of the game. So I watched a bit of that just to get, like, a feel, I think, for her. I actually ended up watching quite a lot of the gameplay. I didn't play it because I'm not a game. Like, I don't know how, and I've tried since. And I spend, like, way too long in a room that's completely irrelevant in the game, and it just takes me, like, hours to get through it. But, yeah, I mean, she is very different from me in a lot of ways. Her emotions are much closer to the surface. She's much more. She has a real, like. Sort of like aggression to her and a violence that's definitely just a part of her, not all of her. But that side of her was quite unfamiliar to me, and it was so cool to get to play that and explore that. It's also weird talking about a character as if they're not you, because they kind of are like, I'm playing her, and it feels. It gets muddled quite easily, which is really fun. I mean, I had a great time. She's a really fun and exciting character to play.
Liam Hess
Yeah, I can imagine there's that you feel that overlap between yourself and the character, and especially in season two we reconnect with Ellie five years later. And you were filming it three years after filming the first season. And, I mean, obviously the character has changed during that time. How did you change during that time? Were there parallels between the way that Ellie had grown up and you had.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah, massively. I mean, I think most of the growing up things happen, like, during. Actually during filming is such a way for me to really look back and, like, almost visually see how much I've grown in. In the outline of, like, I started in January and finished in August. And over that time, so much happened. Like, it's so much easier for me to visualize it in terms of, like, a season.
Liam Hess
Sure.
Bella Ramsey
So, yeah, no, there were definitely parallels. I mean, I was. I turned 18 during season one and was 21 the whole time during season two. So, yeah, there's a bit of a. Bit of a gap. Like, these are formative years for anyone, I feel. So it's really cool to have that preserved in film TV setting for life. It's kind of cool.
Cho Minardi
Were there any choices that you made to age your character?
Bella Ramsey
I think trying to lean into her, sort of almost adopting more of a Joel role and leaning into that was definitely helpful in terms of bringing her older. There'd be times where I'd worry that I was too much like season one Ellie during filming, which was actually never a note that I was given, was one that I just more gave myself, was like, oh, I'm worried that this feels too similar. And so would just lean into, like, when I feel my most adult. And, yeah, stepping into this more like caretaker Joel, I'm in control sort of vibe, which she definitely wanted to have in season one, but. But Joel was ultimately like. Well, I'd say Joel was the boss. I do think she's sort of maybe the boss of him in lots of.
Liam Hess
Ways, but I'd say so. Obviously, the first season was a huge hit, and there's lots of amazing new actors in the show this time. I personally was very excited to see the iconic Catherine O'Hara make an appearance in episode one. But also, Caitlin Diva is joining the show playing Abby. And I know that was a really important casting decision for fans of the game. And, I mean, can you tell us a little bit about her character? And also, was there any advice that you were able to give her in terms of, like, taking on a character that fans are so invested in because this show has a very loyal fan base?
Bella Ramsey
Yes. Caitlin, yeah, is absolutely incredible and was such a perfect addition to this season. And I thought her casting was Especially genius because of. She was sort of in talks for. She was fan cast as Ellie. Oh. So lots of people really wanted Caitlin Diva to be Ellie in the screen adaptation, but she was already, like, in her mid-20s. I think the age just didn't quite work out. So it was really cool for her to come and be Abby in this. I just thought it was so clever and she's. She's perfect for it. Just really embodies the darkness and depth of Abby. And in terms of joining a show with a very loyal fan base, with all the new cast members, just tried to be like, it's fine. You're here for a reason. You got casted in it, so you'll write for it and you're here. And it doesn't matter what anyone says or thinks. It's gonna be loud and there's gonna be a lot of opinions, but they're not for you to look at and digest. Just know that you're here and doing a good job. And like, here, if you want to talk about any of it, because it's hard. Like it is. It is hard because you can't help. But of course, you look to see what people think. It's just human nature. Of course, you, like, do a little Google and when the results of that Google search aren't very positive, and sometimes that can be. It can be hard. And so I think I've really stopped doing that now for the most part, which is good. But I think you sort of have to do it to start with and then once you've done it once, like for season one. Now for season two, I'm like, ah, nah, I'm good. Don't need to do that anymore.
Cho Minardi
Yeah, no.
Liam Hess
It's a bit like Ellie again. In season one, she's the rookie, and in season two, she's, you know, you're able to take everyone under your wing and give them all of your wisdom that you acquired.
Bella Ramsey
Yes, exactly.
Cho Minardi
So your character's really, like, physically active in the show, and I feel like you're running, jumping, heavily armed.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah.
Cho Minardi
Like, how did you prepare for it? Had you ever done a role that was as physically demanding?
Bella Ramsey
No, never. And I'd never had. I always wanted to, like, have to train for a role. And I didn't have to train for this, but I really wanted to. And I went over a couple of months early before filming to basically train in Brazilian jiu jitsu, which is like, Ellie's fighting style and boxing and just weapons training, just physical, like, combat basically, as well as, like, lifting Weights and doing strength training, all of that. So it was quite. I was kind of knackered before I even started.
Cho Minardi
Wow.
Bella Ramsey
Just doing these two months of, like, intense training before we even started was. Yeah. Was mad and so cool.
Cho Minardi
Did you feel. I mean, do you feel physically? Because I always feel like obviously it's knackering, but yeah, it's kind of like. It feels good to suddenly be sort of your physical kind of.
Bella Ramsey
I love being strong. Yeah. It felt so good.
Cho Minardi
Yeah.
Bella Ramsey
And I'm so glad that I got to do that because I. Yeah, I did just like strong throughout the whole season. There was a lot of stunts and a lot of physical days and just being able.
Cho Minardi
Did you do a lot of. Were you doing some of the stunts?
Bella Ramsey
All of them.
Cho Minardi
Really?
Bella Ramsey
Yeah, all of them that I was allowed to do. There are some that I'm literally not allowed to do because of, like, insurance wise.
Cho Minardi
Oh, I see.
Bella Ramsey
Okay. If they're a bit too risky. But I had an amazing stunt double called Cassandra and she did all of the rehearsals and setups so that I could just do the actual filming of it. So I don't get too tired. But yeah, it was great. The stunt days were sort of my favorite.
Cho Minardi
So what were some of the stunts that were mostly that kind of pushed you the most?
Bella Ramsey
It's more the repetition of them.
Cho Minardi
Yeah, I'm sure it's exhausting.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah. I think the first day was this insane fight scene in a barn with like this six foot guy. It's in episode one.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Oh, yeah.
Liam Hess
Oh, yeah, exactly.
Bella Ramsey
We've seen that. That was day one.
Cho Minardi
That was really impressive.
Bella Ramsey
I wasn't.
Liam Hess
Yeah, it's pretty badass.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah. And did it like the first three times, like, yeah, this is great. And then by the end of it, we're only doing that all day. So it's like a 15 hour day or whatever. So by the end of the day, 12 hours. 15 is a bit of an exaggeration. By the end of that, you're just like, knackered. But it's amazing what your body can do. I really learned how much more capable your body is than you think. There was days when, like, I woke up and had these like, months of exhaustion in my body. I'm just like, no idea how I'm gonna do this insane, like, physical day today in the pouring rain. And then always you just do. You just do. Because you have to. And then feel very satisfied and in disbelief after, like, how you managed to sort of do it, but you don't have a choice. You just do it's.
Liam Hess
Fun.
Cho Minardi
The only way is through. I mean, how did you decompress after a long day? Like, what was the. I mean, was there much time to decompress?
Bella Ramsey
Because there wasn't very much time for. I had to wake up the next day. I would get home and, like, try and go straight to bed. But then I'd, like, be going to sleep thinking that, like, I still had my backpack on, like, having a show in my flashlight. There'd be times where I was, like, in bed, literally curled up, feeling like I still had those things, which was weird. And I was like, oh, okay, I need to actually, actually do this decompressed thing that people talk about. But I wasn't very. I guess I just, like, got home and, like, ate carrot sticks out my fridge and made some eggs and cereal, and that was kind of it.
Liam Hess
I'm so impressed. And you can put it on your CV now that they do all their own stunts.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah, exactly. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, too.
Cho Minardi
I mean, it must have been nice going into season two knowing that you're gonna be reuniting with your buddy Pedro. Yeah, I mean, we all love Pedro Pascal, of course. And your friendship on screen has been such a joy to watch, and it's clear that you care about one another so much. So what was the specific moment that you realized you both clicked?
Bella Ramsey
Hmm. Clicked is a bit of a pun as well, considering the show with the clickers did that by accident.
Liam Hess
One for the. For the real heads.
Bella Ramsey
Well, funnily enough, talking about clickers, probably, there's a scene in the museum in the first season where we are attacked very intensely by clickers. And I think we probably clicked during that scene because just in this dark set all day with scary monsters coming at you, how can you not? But yeah, our friendship really did bloom and blossom. We were so shy of each other in the beginning.
Cho Minardi
Really?
Bella Ramsey
Yeah, incredibly. So we both. We didn't have any time to, like, meet or get to know each other before filming, and so we didn't do a chemistry.
Cho Minardi
So you hadn't met before?
Bella Ramsey
Nope. We met on set. I was like, well, we're about to spend a year together. I hope that we'll be friends. And I think we both put so much pressure on it that it took us a while to, like, be, like, comfortable and not. Not shy with each other. But that was nice coming into season two is that there was none of this having to get to know each other. We already knew each other so well, so it was like just coming back to an old friend. It was Great. He's the best. I really. Yeah. I'm so lucky that I got to do this with him.
Liam Hess
It's interesting that you bonded during a scary scene as well. Cause that. I mean, I find the show quite scary at points.
Bella Ramsey
It is scary.
Liam Hess
And is it scary for you to film? Like, do you walk around and hear someone clearing their throat on the street? That sounds like a clicker. Like, ah, whatever.
Cho Minardi
I don't know.
Liam Hess
When you're actually on set filming, it.
Bella Ramsey
Is weirdly not scary. I'm so desensitized to it all that I don't find it scary. There was actually one time this season. This season that was scary in a later episode. And it wasn't even like one of the creatures. It was actually just something else to do with cordyceps that you'll see. Yeah, it was a set, actually, that I found absolutely terrifying.
Liam Hess
Working at Vanity Fair, our entire lives revolve around press screenings, premieres, film festivals, Q&As set, visits, award ceremonies.
Chloe Mal
Not that we're complaining. It's pretty great. But you know that feeling when you see a new film or show and you want to talk about it with everyone immediately? We feel that all the time.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Yes, we sure do. I'm Richard Lawson. I'm David Canfield.
Chloe Mal
And I'm Rebecca Ford.

Wherever you get your podcast. Us.
Cho Minardi
I've been absolutely loving your style lately.
Bella Ramsey
Thank you.
Liam Hess
Same.
Cho Minardi
I loved what you wore to the Met. That skirt, Tuxa was incredible. And then I think recently for an award show, you wore Prada.
Bella Ramsey
And it was.
Cho Minardi
It was so good. What makes a look feel like you? Like, what do you. What elements do you need? What do you look for? Like, what do you gravitate towards? What are you loving right now?
Bella Ramsey
Fabio Mediator is my stylist, and he knows me so well and is so good at, like, picking out things that he knows me well enough to know, like, what I'm gonna like and what I'm not gonna like. And sometimes we'll try stuff and Go out of my comfort zone and then. But he's. Yeah, he's remarkable. We've actually been experimenting with, like, a variation on suits recently. Wearing stuff that's like this cardigan in a shirt and trousers, which I really. I'm liking that. Yeah. For this press tour that I'm about to do for the last of us, this is kind of a combination of suits, but also more, I guess, more like casual, smart attire that aren't, like. Not just suits, which is cool. It's really nice to experiment with stuff like that. Yeah. The shapes have to feel kind of masculine for me to feel comfortable. And it's been great. I mean. Yeah, me and Fabio work really well together. And the brands that we've been working with have been amazing.
Cho Minardi
Are you much of a shopper?
Bella Ramsey
I love vinted and depop. Oh, amazing. That's where all my shopping happens. Okay.
Cho Minardi
What was the last thing that you bought that you were like, ah, this is such a score.
Bella Ramsey
I actually. I got some, like, jean. I got some jorts, some jean shorts. Like, big.
Cho Minardi
Very controversial. I know they're great, but very on trend.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah. Like some baggy ones that I hadn't. I just saw them, I was like, these are probably gonna be way too big, but I'll try them. And I got them in, thought they were going to be too big. When I saw them put them on, they were perfect. They're literally.
Cho Minardi
I love it when that happens.
Bella Ramsey
You know where they're from? They're from fnf, from Tesco.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
No way.
Bella Ramsey
Like vintage. Like vintage vintage Tesco.
Cho Minardi
We love vintage. We love vintage. We have a vintage sale happening in New York and London. All about vintage.
Liam Hess
Indeed. Do you have any style icons in terms of how to navigate red carpet dressing in particular?
Bella Ramsey
I suppose I think the sort of iconic people I have in my head are like Tilda Swinton and Grace Jones.
Liam Hess
Oh, yeah.
Bella Ramsey
Just the coolest.
Liam Hess
And both Tilda and Grace have a, you know, a fairly androgynous style. Are there any brands of that ilk who are doing work within that space that you think are especially interesting that people should check out?
Bella Ramsey
There's a brand called Tomboy. There's actually two brands called Tomboy. There's like Tomboy X and then Tomboy, both of which I think are so cool. And I literally found them because I, like, did a Google search of, like, tomboy clothing and they came up. They're really cool. I really enjoy it when clothes, like fashion brands have like a. There's like. You can choose, like, men, women, or Everyone. Yeah, more places should do that.
Cho Minardi
I hate the idea of it being so binary when you walk into a shop that there's like, men's or women's and they seem to be so separate. Like, they shouldn't. It shouldn't be like that.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah. And then the stigma of, like, if a guy is shopping in the women's section, what shouldn't be like that. Yeah, you're right. I grew up going to the boys section and in my. Me and my mum were just. I just walk there and she'd follow me. And that was always fine because they're just like. They were the clothes that I liked and were most comfy in and. Yeah.
Cho Minardi
Did you like it sounds like you always kind of like, loved playing with fashion. Love the idea of styling yourself.
Bella Ramsey
Clothes have always been either a source of, like, real comfort or real discomfort for me. So I think from a young age. Yeah. So I think it was always just quite important for me to wear stuff that made me feel good.
Liam Hess
Totally. And there was a great quote from Lena Dunham in the story as well, where she said something along the lines of, you can just as easily imagine Bella at a rave in East London as you can in a Renaissance court. And I thought that was really cool and really true.
Bella Ramsey
That's so nice.
Liam Hess
But you played a lot of characters that are in these kind of fantasy shows, period shows, and I was wondering if there is anything in terms of genre you'd love to work in. Any kind of types of characters you'd love to play that are. That we might not expect.
Bella Ramsey
Oof. That's a good question. I do like the idea of playing someone that people naturally cast me in. Yeah, I love the idea of that. I'd love. I think I've said this before, but I'd love to play like a really. Like a tortured. I mean, Ellie's kind of like that, but like a Hannibal Lecter type. Someone, like, truly evil. But also. That's the joy. The joy. And the interesting thing about that is finding the humanity in, like, even the most evil characters. For sure, you feel like kind of an emotional. Like, kind of bad for Hannibal Lecter. You're like, well, I kind of have some feelings towards you.
Liam Hess
Right.
Bella Ramsey
And which is the coolest part about, like, playing a really. That's the challenge of playing like a really dark and evil character is finding their humanity and making people feel something for them. So I'd love to do that.
Cho Minardi
I can't wait for that. I think we've mentioned before that you kind of do a Little bit of everything. I didn't realize you also wrote a song about the film Call Me by youy Name.
Bella Ramsey
Oh, yeah. Did I say that in the.
Liam Hess
Yeah.
Bella Ramsey
I've not read the piece.
Liam Hess
Very cool.
Cho Minardi
And that you like to watch Mum Island. I'm kind of curious as to what. What you've been watching and listening to lately. But yeah, I was. I was very intrigued by.
Liam Hess
Yeah, Yeah. I was very impressed by all of your hobbies and side projects. Yeah.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Yeah.
Bella Ramsey
That's lovely. I've been watching. I've been trying to start the White Lotus.
Cho Minardi
Oh, it's so good.
Bella Ramsey
So I'm watching the first season of that.
Cho Minardi
Oh, it's so good.
Bella Ramsey
I'm almost finished the first season. It is great.
Cho Minardi
Yeah.
Bella Ramsey
Very invested.
Liam Hess
It's so juicy.
Bella Ramsey
Kind of horrible.
Cho Minardi
You're doing it from beginning to. You're not. Start season three.
Bella Ramsey
Start at the beginning. The White Lotus and Severance is sort of my two.
Cho Minardi
I know. I haven't started Severance yet. I'm excited to.
Bella Ramsey
It's great.
Liam Hess
I've only watched the first season, but.
Cho Minardi
Okay.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah, same.
Cho Minardi
How many seasons are there?
Bella Ramsey
There's two. The second one just came out. I need to watch the second one.
Jose Crialas Unzueta
Yeah.
Bella Ramsey
And then music wise, Arlo Parks is always my. Always my favorite.
Cho Minardi
Good choice.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah. And I've got friend called Cordelia who's just released an album. Do you know, do you remember that song? I think I like this Little Life.
Liam Hess
Oh, yeah. On TikTok.
Bella Ramsey
Yeah, on TikTok. It went viral. On TikTok. She's just released like an album which is. I've been really listening to it non stop. All of the songs have been in my head.
Cho Minardi
Do you like going to shows or is like music more at home thing?
Bella Ramsey
I prefer listening to it on my own. It's like quite a private experience for me. I really enjoy that. Yeah. Just. And I can like look at the lyrics as well as I'm listening, which is my favorite thing to do. Yeah, I've been playing Cordelia a lot. She's fab.
Cho Minardi
That's so cool. Cool, yeah. Thank you so much for coming in.
Liam Hess
Thanks for having us.
Cho Minardi

Chloe Mal

There's a new translation of the Iliad that's coming out. Emily Wilson, really excited to see whether I can read the Iliad again, whether I'm that literate. I mean, the jury is out.
Chloe Mal
I can't wait to hear Adam Driver go again in an Italian accent in Michael Mann's Ferrari. He can't. I mean, and bless him, I can't wait.
