This episode of the Run through is brought to you by ebay. I'm Arden Fanning Andrews, Vogue's beauty editor at large. Everyone's talking about tassels right now, and that's the moment that I end up typing it into ebay. I found the perfect vintage triple chain belt with golden tassels, and it just looks so elegant, timeless. And it's on the way in the mail to me, thanks to ebay.
Chloe Mel
This is the Run through and I'm Chloe Mel.
Sharmin Adi
And I'm Sharmin Adi.
Chloe Mel
Today we have Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber, both Vogue cover stars. And Mother's Day is coming up. This weekend, we had Vogue's own features editor, Chloe Shama and senior fashion writer Christian Allaire speaking with Cindy and Kaia about all of their Mother's Day traditions, including Kya's early days of playing photo shoot and Cindy Cindy's closet and Cindy's best advice for her children. It's a really cute conversation, but before.
Sharmin Adi
We get into that, we are fresh off of Met week and both still recovering.
Chloe Mel
I woke up this morning and I was like, I feel deeply hungover. And I'm not. It's just like a Met hangover just from general exhaustion.
Sharmin Adi
It's a Met hangover. I didn't even have a drop of alcohol. And I feel the same.
Chloe Mel
My aura Ring on Monday night, asked if I took a nap because I slept two hours and 30 minutes.
Sharmin Adi
Oh, no, I didn't. It ran out of battery. Thank God. Because I was just like, I want to know. I think I was like, it did record how many hours I spent in bed, and it was like four hours and five minutes. I was like, oops, yeah.
Chloe Mel
Oh, yeah. Let's hear your run of show.
Sharmin Adi
Oh, my goodness, Joma. Yeah.
Chloe Mel
Cause we were together for the fabulous podcast with Janicza Bravo in a side room of the Met, which was so much fun. And then where did you go from there?
Sharmin Adi
So from there, I whizzed downtown to the GQ party, which was hosted by our colleague Will Welch and Andre 3000. And my partner is very into. Andre 3000 has always been a huge fan. So we arrived just as he was walking in, and we were able to sort of chat to him, which was. Which made both of our nights, which was really, really fun. And it. And the music was great. Rich Medina was spinning, and it was a really party at the 22, which is just off of Union Square. I'd actually never been there.
Chloe Mel
I think it just opened.
Sharmin Adi
Oh, did it just open? Yeah, it's A cool space.
Chloe Mel
It's one of the many members clubs opening in New York City.
Sharmin Adi
Right. There is a 22 in London. So I don't know if they're related, but like it was. They shared the same name. We didn't stay so long because obviously we had a long list of parties to attend. We did at some point in the night run into Elise Taylor, but I'll get into that later. I was like, how are you standing?
Cindy Crawford
Tell me everything.
Sharmin Adi
So we then we went over to. We went over to Boom Boom where Burna Boy, who's an amazing Nigerian artist, was hosting a party and DJ Black Coffee was spinning his big, big African dj. And that was really fun. We ran into our friend Irene. We. Who else did I see there? I met Burna Boy's mot. I was introduced to the entire family. It was very fun.
Chloe Mel
Oh my God, that's so cute.
Sharmin Adi
And I have to say that the Boom Boom room just hasn't. Is such an impressive space. It doesn't get old. I kind of miss it as like the official after party. I know. I almost feel that we've reached peak met after party. We reached peak marker party this year.
Chloe Mel
There were 17 this year on Lila's spreadsheet.
Sharmin Adi
And that is insane.
Chloe Mel
It's unbelievable.
Sharmin Adi
It's insane. It's insane. So it was really hard to feel like you were at the party because there were so, so many. And I think there were moments that obviously happened at these different events that were incredible. I mean, we saw Lana Del Rey singing at the Cartier party. You did? I didn't, I didn't. I sort of. By the time you go down, I.
Chloe Mel
Went for like 10 minutes with Jesse and Liam and then we left right before apparently she performed. We were devastated.
Sharmin Adi
Yeah, because I feel like it's your first stop because you're uptown.
Chloe Mel
I know. Like staying up at least called that a starter party.
Sharmin Adi
Okay. Yeah. I mean some of the celebrities are staying uptown. They're staying in that. They even staying at the Mark. So probably makes more sense for them to do it as their last stop.
Chloe Mel
Oh, interesting. A closer party.
Sharmin Adi
A closer party. So, yes, went to the Boom Boom. Then we whizzed over to Savannah James, LeBron James's wife party, which was really fun. Which was actually called the last stop.
Chloe Mel
Okay.
Sharmin Adi
Speaking of, speaking of, cuz it was quite late at this point. I think it was like three.
Chloe Mel
Oh my God. Ch.
Sharmin Adi
That's where I ran into Elise.
Chloe Mel
And what shoes are you wearing?
Sharmin Adi
Wearing the same shoes.
Chloe Mel
You wore the same Tory Burch shoes.
Sharmin Adi
Those heels surprisingly comfortable. I know Irene Kim, who works on Vogue Runway, also has the same pair of shoes, and she says the same. And I'm always skeptical about this sort of the idea of the comfortable heel. But actually, they're really comfortable. I didn't have any foot pain, which was fabulous because I was out until 5 in the morning. So ran into Elise. She was having a great time. We saw Pusha T there. It was a fun night. It was a fun party. And then we decided before on our way home, because it was very close to where I live on the Lower east side when I'm in town. We went to A.S.A.P Rocky's party. And as a.
Chloe Mel
You did four parties to Soma.
Arden Fanning Andrews
I know.
Sharmin Adi
I'm very impressed with myself. I wanted to get to more, but four was the limit. This year. I've done. I think My record is 5. I don't know how Elise did. Did she manage to get through all more.
Chloe Mel
She went to 8 of 17.
Kaia Gerber
Okay.
Chloe Mel
Which is a lot.
Sharmin Adi
That's a good amount. I heard there was also a roller skating party that Alicia Keys did, which I'm very upset I didn't go to because I love roller skating. That would have been my priority personally. So we get there, and as we arrive, Rihanna comes in. I get to introduce my partner to Rihanna. We're chatting. She's like, I remember when we were at. She's like, I'm having flashbacks to when we were at Caviar Caspar in Paris. It was like one of my favorite interviews ever. And it was really sweet to see her. And she looked so heavenly. In Anne de Moula Meester, she had this lace. It was almost like a durag, but like a head wrap.
Chloe Mel
Was it, like, embellished? It looked like it almost was embroidered.
Sharmin Adi
And I think it was lace. Maybe it was slightly embellished. I couldn't quite see that. But I just loved how beautiful this silhouette was. Cause she wore this maxi skirt that had lacing on the side, so it was very cint. So she was very kind of beautiful shape. And then a ruffled blouse. I mean, her pregnancy style is her best. Like, then we thought that the Met was her reveal, which it was in a way. But she actually did a whole photo shoot with the. With the paparazzi photographer Diggsy. And for me, that look of her in the Miu Miu in the Rain was just perfection.
Chloe Mel
Really knows how to play that.
Sharmin Adi
It's so smart, I have to say, because pregnancy reveals tend to be in very sort of stiff. They're in A studio. It's like, very much about the bump. And she's just like, here I am. I just happened to be pregnant, and I'm walking down the street like, it's so.
Chloe Mel
But I've been hiding it till exactly the right moment.
Sharmin Adi
She's. She's. She's the master. So it was that made my night. Then I was like, there's a lot.
Chloe Mel
Of hemming and hawing in the war room. When we saw those photos go live. And it was like, she's obviously pregnant. Let's go live. But we don't know. I don't know.
Cindy Crawford
Should we go?
Chloe Mel
They're not.
Sharmin Adi
No. That's the worst.
Chloe Mel
And then I almost killed Anna because then I saw Anna later go over the best dress list, and she was like, I knew Rihanna was pregnant. I was like, could have let me know.
Sharmin Adi
And I'd had lunch with Rihanna's PR a couple of days earlier. And of course, Amanda Silverman is like a vault. Never mentioned anything to me. So I had no idea. But I had heard rumblings, and there was one look that she wore that was very. It was almost like I had a concertina shape in the front. So it was almost like it could have been left room for a bump. And then I think her fenty. She did a Fenty Savage photo shoot where her bump was kind of concealed with fabric. So there had been a lot of chatter online, but I didn't want to jump to any conclusions. But, yeah, baby number three. I mean, it does explain a little bit as to why A$AP was so happy. I mean, they are just so happy.
Chloe Mel
I know. Leah did flag that in your interview for the podcast with A dollar ap. He said that he was dressing as the Easter bunny and he's just making lots of more bunnies.
Sharmin Adi
Yes.
Chloe Mel
So there you go.
Sharmin Adi
He kind of gave us the Easter egg without us even clocking it. We should have known better.
Kaia Gerber
Oh, yeah.
Sharmin Adi
So what were your favorite after party looks?
Chloe Mel
I. I liked all the corsets. There was a lot of corsetry. I actually thought Hailey Bieber looked great in her corset. There was a lot of nakedness. Pantlessness. Continued. Janelle Monevis very revealed.
Sharmin Adi
Yeah. It was the most revealing Thom Browne look I think I've ever seen.
Chloe Mel
Yes, I think that's right. Hunter Schaeffer looked amazing in a Dallara corset dress. That was just, I thought, heavenly.
Sharmin Adi
I mean, Hunter never misses, and Laura Harrier never misses either.
Chloe Mel
Laura Harrier had a Gap studio dress that had a picture of Andre Leon Talley screen printed on it.
Sharmin Adi
Ah, yes, I saw that. That was so. That was so great. Was Hailey Bieber's look Dilara.
Chloe Mel
Hailey was also Dilara. So it was double dilaura corsetry that we liked. Hailey and Hunter.
Sharmin Adi
So, I mean, for anyone who hasn't looked up her work, they need to immediately. Her show was just one of the best shows of London Fashion Week. So she's really on a high this year.
Chloe Mel
Choma. What stories have been trending for British Vogue from the Met. What are people interested in?
Sharmin Adi
I think everyone was very into Pamela Anderson's Bob.
Chloe Mel
Yeah, they really were. Yeah, people are very interested in her.
Sharmin Adi
She was.
Chloe Mel
And she came with her son.
Sharmin Adi
Yes, I was at her table.
Chloe Mel
Oh, right. Of course.
Sharmin Adi
She was very. It was very sweet. So basically, her son and Tory Burch's son were friends and they introduced their mothers. That's how their mothers got to know each other. And they just hit it off like a house on fire. That's cute. Yeah. Yeah. So her son directed, I think, and produced the documentary on her life, which was Emmy. Emmy nominated. Yeah. He was talking about it at the table. It was very sweet. It was the son's first times at the Met, so it was very interesting to see. It was very sweet to see each of them, the mothers, kind of making sure that they were doing well, making sure they weren't misbehaving. Making sure. It was very sweet. Making sure.
Chloe Mel
Bring your mom to work.
Sharmin Adi
Yes. Yes.
Chloe Mel
I thought that the vice president's dress was great. Her off white collaboration with IB Kamara. Also, Andre Wagner is one of the photographers that we commissioned, and his photos just came in and they are so beautiful.
Sharmin Adi
He's so talented. I remember when we first commissioned him to shoot a story in Jamaica. So he went to Jamaica with a writer to cover Fashion Week there, and he came in with his portfolio. And this one, he was just beginning to work with the New York Times, and he just was the most gracious, lovely person. And he hasn't changed. Yeah, I really. I think it was such a fabulous idea to have him shoot the Met. And it was really great to see him.
Chloe Mel
No, the photos are really beautiful. We're doing an edit right now.
Sharmin Adi
I can't wait to see it.
Chloe Mel
It's midday on Wednesday and they'll be up imminently.
Sharmin Adi
Fabulous.
Chloe Mel
But also Ruth Osai.
Sharmin Adi
Oh, I know. Did a beautiful photo. I own pieces of her art.
Kaia Gerber
Do you?
Sharmin Adi
Yeah.
Chloe Mel
Yes. We did a photo booth with her that Parker harbor had no L. Olivia Horner oversaw. And it looks really fantastic.
Sharmin Adi
I cannot wait. I love her.
Chloe Mel
And what else? I feel like people have been very interested in Are we did a Ty Gaskins did a great explainer on sort of what is dandyism? And that's been doing really well. So it's been interesting to see what people are now looking up after the gala. Zoot suits, for example. What is dandyism? What is a zoot suit? So I do feel like there's been a lot of cultural conversation coming out of the red carpet. Also, I just was obsessed with all the accessories on Monday night. It was a real night for. We were anticipating brooches, but it went way beyond the brooch. Yes.
Sharmin Adi
And it did make it very clear to me that you were either a hat person or you were not a hat person.
Chloe Mel
Totally. And some people who are not hat person. Hat people were wearing hats.
Sharmin Adi
I know, I know, I know. So it's quite an accessory to pull off. I mean, obviously Rihanna can wear. I mean, she's worn fabulous hats over the years. It was so good to see her in that hat. And she is.
Chloe Mel
So she can wear whatever she wants.
Sharmin Adi
I know.
Chloe Mel
Some people cannot.
Sharmin Adi
I know, I know.
Chloe Mel
Many hats.
Sharmin Adi
Many hats. But some hats should have been left at home. Tip top.
Kaia Gerber
Tip top.
Sharmin Adi
Exactly.
Chloe Mel
Choma, today is the first day of the Conclave.
Sharmin Adi
I'm obsessed. Who do we think is going to be?
Chloe Mel
Well, I can tell you because I'm in touch with the Vatican's pr.
Sharmin Adi
Oh, my goodness.
Chloe Mel
Massimo.
Sharmin Adi
So who's the favorite?
Chloe Mel
There are three favorites.
Sharmin Adi
I hope that the Ghanaian.
Chloe Mel
There's people are really. I mean, I want to start taking bets. I want there to be only just because he's African.
Sharmin Adi
I really don't know anything about where he stands. I'm just like, I'm just ruined for my people.
Chloe Mel
According to Massimo, though, we have there's three front runners. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who is the Vatican Secretary of State. There's an outsider who's the first? The Cardinal Jean Marc Aveline. And then there's also the Italian Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, who was a man who was very close to Pope Francis. Raven Smith is doing a piece on, like, the memeification of the Conclave because there have been such funny things. Like there's a scene comparing a scene in the movie Conclave with the exact almost scene from the Phantom Menace, which made me lol. And also someone did a brilliant mashup of Stanley Tucci and Conclave versus Stanley Tucci and the devil worship Prada. And it's perfect. So, yes, we have a lot going.
Sharmin Adi
On this week is the BAFTA TV Awards. As in tomorrow.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah.
Chloe Mel
This week is almost over, Gemma.
Sharmin Adi
As in yet when I land, the day I land, we're hosting a party with Netflix, which is always super fun. So I'm excited for that.
Chloe Mel
Wow. Where is that gonna be and what are you wearing?
Sharmin Adi
It's in Mayfair. It's one of the restaurants at the. At the One hotel.
Chloe Mel
Okay.
Sharmin Adi
And I'm wearing this Dior Galliana for Dior dress and jacket from One of a Kind archive, which is one of my all time favorite vintage stores on Portobello Road. It's appointment only and they have the most rare pieces and the likes of Rihanna, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell have shopped there. And it's very like everything is sort of comes wrapped up because the dresses are so precious. So it's very, very.
Chloe Mel
Wow.
Sharmin Adi
Yeah. So I'm really excited. I wore, for the first fashion and film party that we did around the BAFTAs, I wore this fantastic Vivienne Westwood dress. And I think it's worth like £20,000. I'm always nervous when I wear these dresses because I'm like, you cannot rip, I cannot trip, I cannot drink red wine. I need to be extra specially aware of what I'm wearing. But it's amazing. It's. They have the best outfit ever. Yeah. Very excited.
Chloe Mel
The run through will be back in a moment with Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber.
Arden Fanning Andrews
The other day, I like, went on a real ebay spree. There's this huge push for like 80s opulence and 80s sort of glamour, and we're going to see that returning. And so I was already kind of tapped into that just from my gorgeous ebay watch list. And I found a really beautiful Chloe blazer from the 80s and a really great Miu Miu kilt, these great Dior boots. And I'm combining them all together. Sometimes trend forecasting doesn't require something that's gonna be like, produced in the future. Sometimes you can, like tap into the past and tap into the archive as well. That's what makes ebay a fun place to actually discover things, because you're not going in with something so specific in mind, but you have an idea of what you're interested in or what you're excited about or, you know, just truly trend forecasting. And so one thing that I would say people should be watching out for is like, very opulent 80s style.
Chloe Shama
I'm Chloe. Chloe Shama. There's another Chloe at Vug who you guys may have met. Chloe Ma. Yes, I am Chloe Shama.
Christian Allaire
And I am Christian Allaire. Nice to meet you guys.
Kaia Gerber
Nice to meet you.
Chloe Shama
Yeah. Thank you so much for doing this.
Christian Allaire
Yes. You guys are our first mother daughter duo. We've had on the pod, so we're very excited.
Cindy Crawford
Wait, we're the first mother daughter duo?
Christian Allaire
Yes.
Chloe Shama
I had to think about it for a minute, but I can't think of another. So, yeah, I'm gonna trust our producer with her notes.
Christian Allaire
Yeah. And it's great timing with Mother's Day coming up, so. What a better duo.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah. And actually Kya's, I think your first cover was with me or. No, you were inside Vogue. You were in Vogue when you were like one and a half or something.
Chloe Shama
So long hairy hair's first Vogue.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah, first Vogue shoot.
Cindy Crawford
Yeah. And you were inside Vogue when it was my cover.
Kaia Gerber
That is true. I think I was in the crease. No, I'm just kidding.
Cindy Crawford
I called Anna. I said, make sure she's put her on the crease.
Chloe Shama
Do you guys have any special plans for this coming weekend or for Mother's Day?
Kaia Gerber
Well, this weekend is my husband's birthday, Kya's dad's. So actually she and I are cooking dinner tonight to celebrate early what's on the menu.
Cindy Crawford
And we're making a cake. Yes, on the menu I make pretty good steak that my dad loves. So I'm gonna make steak. I'll probably put you on salad duty if you're okay with that.
Kaia Gerber
I am. And then we're using my carrot cake recipe.
Cindy Crawford
Yes.
Kaia Gerber
But Kya does the frosting now she's perfected the frosting and I do the cake part.
Chloe Shama
So is there a secret to the frosting?
Kaia Gerber
It's just like when you melt, it has white chocolate in it. You have to be patient.
Chloe Shama
Yeah.
Kaia Gerber
You know, it doesn't get lumpy.
Cindy Crawford
You don't have white chocolate over, like, you shouldn't microwave it. You should just melt it slowly over a stove, over a boiling pot of water. And that's how you make sure it's not clumpy.
Kaia Gerber
Right.
Cindy Crawford
And I eat the frosting, I always double it, and then I eat it on everything for days. It's so good.
Chloe Shama
I always think of cream cheese frosting as the carrot cake frosting, but white chocolate sounds better.
Cindy Crawford
Cream cheese. White chocolate.
Kaia Gerber
It has. It's cream cheese but with melted white chocolate in it. That's the secret.
Cindy Crawford
It's really good.
Kaia Gerber
It is delicious.
Chloe Shama
Sounds amazing.
Christian Allaire
Did you guys have any sort of like Mother's Day traditions growing up or something? You guys do sort of every year.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah. I mean, I think some of the traditional stuff when they were little, like, the kids would make breakfast in bed, and I would have to lay in bed until they got breakfast ready, and I'm usually the first one up in the house, so kind of pretending to not be awake while my husband got them up and made breakfast in bed. That was super cute. And then you guys got up and started doing it yourself. And I was like, a homemade gift or. Really? I'm not a gift. I don't care about gifts. What I care about is a handwritten card.
Cindy Crawford
Handwritten card?
Kaia Gerber
Yes. And you are very good at that, if nothing else.
Cindy Crawford
Handwritten card. And I've learned that, so. Yeah.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah.
Chloe Shama
Do you keep them all?
Kaia Gerber
Oh, yeah. And I think for our family, we just realize, like, how precious time together is, especially now that my children are both adults and have their own lives. Like, I just even. We recently did a shoot for Viori, and just having, you know, it took a day of working together, but we all got to be together, so it didn't even feel like work. I was so grateful just to have that time with you guys.
Cindy Crawford
It's rare, actually. I feel like it's more rare now to have all four of us together.
Kaia Gerber
And without plus ones.
Cindy Crawford
Without. Yes. Yeah. Without, you know, a plus one. So I think, like, that was the first time in a long time. It was the Core 4, and it was really nice.
Kaia Gerber
Well, when we sat down for lunch, just the four of us, I was like, wow, when's the last time it was just the four of us?
Cindy Crawford
I don't know.
Kaia Gerber
I just. As a parent, you just. You cherish that so much.
Cindy Crawford
Yeah.
Chloe Shama
So this shoot was done by the very talented Cass Bird, who we are fans of at Vogue, and we know you have worked with before. Are you gonna frame this photo in your house when you finally get it, or one of the photos from the campaign?
Cindy Crawford
Well, my mom is very serious about a Christmas card, and I've been on shoots before where she has my brother come and my father come and asks the photographer six months in advance to take a picture. So we have some pretty incredible Christmas cards done by a great photograph on sets of other jobs. So that's all I was thinking about when we were doing our group pictures is, like, I knew one was gonna be a Christmas card this year and thought she would be thrilled to have one, probably.
Kaia Gerber
Hopefully it'll probably have been seen already by everyone then, but I do, again, just, like, love having those pictures, and especially someone like Cass. She's so good at that. Spontaneous, you really feel like you see the person and not, you know, look. We both love doing the other kind of shoots too, where it's very, you know, posed and maybe, you know, creating a character. And Cass is just. Her main thing is to get you laughing. She wants to get a real smile out of everybody. And I love it when Kya smiles. And she was very successful that day in getting Kya a more playful side than we normally get to see in, you know, some of her fashion shoots these days.
Christian Allaire
Well, I love that the sort of the brand has sort of an outdoorsy sort of athleisure feel. And it's something at Vogue we like notice a lot is it seems to be all the rage in fashion right now is sort of celebrities dressing up to go to the gym. And it's become its own subset of fashion. So what is your guys approach to athleisure and working out and style and the intersection of that?
Cindy Crawford
Well, I feel like I noticed particularly towards the end of the pandemic, a lot of the only times we saw people leaving their house was to go to the gym. And I feel like, at least for me, that's when I noticed it becoming this thing of like most of the pictures we're seeing of people are them in workout clothes. Or at least that was true for me because that was the only time I was leaving the house. You know, we weren't really socializing. And looking back, I don't think a gym was a safe place to be either. But that was if you wore a mask. Yeah, of course. But yeah. And I feel like it kind of became this thing. And also you look back to the 90s and to my mom's workout videos. Athleisure was also becoming trendy then, and you have Jane Fonda. And I feel like it always was a part of culture and a part of fashion and a part of beauty. And it always has been a big thing in our career. So like, to me, it just kind of feels like carrying on with that.
Kaia Gerber
It actually is funny because I remember when I would drop the kids off at school and you could tell most of the time I would go and work out clothes. Cause after I would take them to school, I'd go work out. Once in a while I would have on like, you know, I guess like my supermodel outfit or whatever. And like all the other moms were like, oh, you're going into town today. Like, you could tell based on what people were wearing, especially in Malibu, because Malibu is so much about hiking and taking walks on the beach. And I think we're both obsessed with. With the fabrics of Viwari because they really are so comfortable. Like, you do kind of get a little upset.
Cindy Crawford
You get addicted. And like, I also will say something. The Pandemic did for me. I had been wearing, you know, jeans and heels for years, and then all of a sudden, I spent months in nothing but comfortable, cozy clothes. And I thought, why on earth would I ever put on anything else? And so, like, it's been very hard for me to be uncomfortable after living like that for months.
Kaia Gerber
And I. I did put jeans on every day, during.
Cindy Crawford
Which you can imagine how that made me feel when I wasn't even. I wasn't wearing pants at all. And this woman had jeans and, you know, a gorgeous blouse and a blowout. And I was like, what's going on?
Kaia Gerber
Like, I just felt like I needed that routine. Like, otherwise, it was like, where does the day start? Where does the day end? For me, it was like, work out, get dressed. I still felt like, okay. A somewhat productive person.
Chloe Shama
Yeah. So pretty workout era of your life. Kaya, when did you first realize what your mother did for her work? And how did it, like, occur to you that you might be interested in doing that as well?
Cindy Crawford
I don't know when it registered, because I think as a kid, like, whatever's in front of you feels normal. Like, you don't have reference of it being out of the norm. So I think also getting your photo taken, and I think I've said this before, is something that everyone does to some extent. So I was like, I didn't understand why what she was having her photo taken. I was having my picture taken at school on class picture day. You know, my friends are taking pictures at family reunions. Like, I was like, this is something people do. But I do remember, I think we were. We were somewhere and you were feeding a baby seal.
Kaia Gerber
Sea World.
Cindy Crawford
Well, we don't go there anymore.
Kaia Gerber
But, I mean, I think people could probably make the jump in their minds of where I might be feeding a baby seal.
Cindy Crawford
This was a lot. Long, long time. And she was, like, feeding a baby seal in front of an audience. And I was so jealous. I was so upset about it. I didn't like it, but I was at. Then I think I realized I was like, why is she on a stage feeding a baby seal? Like, I'm just. I was trying to sort of understand the concept of fame, which I don't think is an easy thing for anyone to fully comprehend, but especially not a child. Like, I didn't understand why People wanted to take photos with her that were strangers. Like, I was just like, I don't know, what is this? And then I think in terms of it being something that I wanted to do. Like, I just was used to that environment, I guess.
Kaia Gerber
And I mean, they used to come, I think, you know, you did a Clairol commercial with me when she was like a year and a half.
Cindy Crawford
Never got paid, though.
Kaia Gerber
Yes, you did. And, you know, she would come on set sometimes just to see me, but sometimes they would be like, oh, that'd be cute. You know, if she wants to be in the shot. And she did. And then also when she was little, she and her friends, they'd want to play. Like, I guess it was dress up, but it was really, they called it photo shoot. And they would raid my closet and they would, like, pull down like a Dolce Gabbana or some, you know, some dress, whatever they wanted. And I would pin it all up the back and I would, like, do hair and makeup.
Cindy Crawford
She'd give us full, like, guido blowout and like the five minute one, like, eye and snatched face.
Kaia Gerber
I'm glad you felt that. Cause I literally probably spent five minutes.
Cindy Crawford
Oh, in the morning.
Kaia Gerber
But a little back combing goes a long way when you're seven. And then they would go downstairs and I would just take pictures of them. And Kya always loved it. Like, she just loved playing dress up. And then I think the first time she got hired on her own was with Donatella. Versace asked her to do Versace Kids. And you took me and I went with you. And.
Cindy Crawford
And she told me it. Cause I was so nervous. And she told me to imagine everyone naked.
Kaia Gerber
I think I got that from the Brady father.
Cindy Crawford
And it actually, like, it worked. And it was so fun. And it was always so fun for me. And like, I think I saw my. How hard my mom worked and the life that she had made for herself through this career, and that really inspired me. And then when I was starting out, all the girls that I started out with, all these women that I was surrounded by, had the most incredible work ethic and came from very different scenarios than I did and very different upbringings than I did and didn't have the foundation that I did. Just like my mom didn't have that kind of foundation. So I was surrounded by women with, like, the most incredible ambition and work ethic. And I just, you know, really, like, in trying to honor them and learning from them, had the utmost respect for them. And like, really, I feel like any ambition that I had was like, through these women that I was surrounded by, because I obviously came from a very different upbringing in very different circumstances as a lot of the women that I was working with.
Chloe Shama
Was that Versace kids moment. The moment, Cindy, when you thought, oh, Kya might be headed in this direction, or was there a different moment in her childhood?
Kaia Gerber
The thing about Kaya is she's like, we always. We called Kya like, almost like in world peace. Because even when she was five years old, you would ask, like, you know how families talk at dinner tables and we'd ask some question, and Kaya would always be like the most perfect, politically correct, beautiful, well thought out answer. I'm like, if nothing else, she's gonna be a pageant queen. And then when she did do that shoot, and it was with, you know, obviously Donatella and Marcus, Matt and Marcus, and, you know, I think every mother thinks their own kid is beautiful. But then, you know, seeing your child through someone else's eyes, especially, you know, look, fashion people, they tell it like it is and they can be a little snobby. And they were like, oohing and ahhing over her. And you felt comfortable, like you brought it in front of the camera. And then I think you didn't do anything for a while.
Cindy Crawford
Yeah, I mean, I was still in school. I was 10 when I did that. And then it was just fun. Like, it was just fun jobs here and there. Until I was 16, it was not a full time job in any kind of way. It wasn't until I was old enough to do shows at 6, 16 that it was more of a full time job. But no, it was. It was always fun. You know, I think that's. I feel so appreciative. Like, I didn't have a mother who was living vicariously through me because she'd done it all. And so there was never any pressure. And like, I have so much empathy for people who either had, you know, a family member that was living vicariously through them or who they were supporting a family that they were supporting. So I just didn't have that pressure. And like, therefore, it was able to be fun for me in a way that I don't think it was for some of the other women. And so, like, I'm very, very grateful for that opportunity.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah, I think, though, that you. Not that you put pressure on yourself, but the way that I see you is whatever you do, you give it 110%. You're not sloppy. You know, you show up, you only in fun ways. No, but you want to do a good job you want. You know, you knew exactly what you wanted to do, which photographers you wanted to work with. I mean, it was such a different world when I started modeling. There was no Internet. Right. So you didn't. I didn't know. I barely knew. I knew Teen Vogue. I knew Phoebe Cates, you know, like, that was my. The model that I knew. And, you know, she'd been in fast times at Ridgemont High or whatever. Like, I didn't have the references. I had to learn. I didn't even know designers, really, until I started modeling. And the thing that's great about this generation is if they're told they're gonna work with Steven Meisel, they can go online and they can look at Steven's work, and they can show up ready and to, you know, to understand Steven's aesthetic and his vocabulary or whatever. And I think Kai is the type of model that did that. Like, she knew. Oh, if you're working with, you know, a Peter Lindbergh, it's gonna be. It can be a little more moody or whatever. I'm probably saying all the photographers are my generation and not.
Cindy Crawford
No, but these are all people I work with.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah, you.
Cindy Crawford
Which is very cool.
Kaia Gerber
I know.
Cindy Crawford
But, yeah, I feel like you're a great student. Like, I honestly see my mother as a student forever, an eternal student of life. And I very much think I get that curiosity and that sort of like, scholar mindset from you. And so if it wasn't my schoolwork, then I made it modeling or acting or whatever it might be reading. Like, I just love being a student. So when it was. When it came to working with these people, like, I got to learn so much about all of these people. Not just, you know, photographers, but designers. And there's so much media out there on the fashion world, and we're really. I feel like it's so inclusive now of everyone that there's, like, endless information about all of these people that I got to work with, which was. It's just been really fun learning people in that way.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah.
Arden Fanning Andrews
I like ebay for one of a kind items, things that feel limited edition or collections that can't be found in stores. And with the ebay authenticity guarantee, I know that when it arrives, it's real. It is a piece that is coming from the designer's collection, the designer's archive. One of the biggest conversation points for some of the parties that I'll go to during Fashion Week are the pieces that I'm getting off of ebay. Everyone's a little bit intrigued and Excited whenever they hear that you were able to find something on this digital treasure hunt.
Christian Allaire
I did want to ask you about fashion. I loved recently. Kaia, you wore sort of like a recreation of a dress that Cindy, you Wore to the 93 Oscars. It was an Herve Ligier. Very fab. So what's kind of your viewpoint on fashion? Is there a lot of sharing going on in the wardrobe? Do you guys get inspired by each other?
Cindy Crawford
I'm probably more inspired than, than you are. I mean, I'm inspired by you more than you probably are.
Kaia Gerber
No, I think like I trust Kya's opinion because I also don't want to be one of those moms that like gets stuck in like, well, this was what's in style in the 90s, so I better say.
Cindy Crawford
But you also are good about not being one of those moms who's like trying to be. Yeah too, you know, I don't want.
Kaia Gerber
To try too hard and like, I don't. I would never want to be like, I'm trying to compete with my 23 year old daughter. But at the same time I don't to want, you know, I want to reimagine fashion. I mean, I think obviously, I mean we have different but similar, I guess. Yeah. Yeah.
Cindy Crawford
I don't know. I think I like, I didn't see you go through phases like you have. You've had your style pretty dialed in for a while.
Kaia Gerber
Well, yeah, I mean I was.
Cindy Crawford
You saw me go through phases that I some wish I hadn't gone through. But I do think like the older I get, the more I go into kind of your territory, which is just like classic. And you know, the nice thing about like looking quite similar to a parent is if I want to know if like a hair or makeup look will look good on me, I literally will look up pictures of my mom and be like, like, because I'm like, if it, if I think it looks good on her, like most times it. I can pull it off as well.
Kaia Gerber
Well, don't use it for references. Sometimes for. Yeah.
Cindy Crawford
And by the way, like hair and makeup people love that because they're like, oh, we can see what it will look like basically on your face. So I oftentimes do use you as references and I take stuff from your closet.
Kaia Gerber
Well, recently we had an event. It was a private event, but Kaya found an old Alaia dress that I.
Cindy Crawford
Had which she was, I mean, hiding from me. She was really.
Kaia Gerber
You think it's hiding, but I actually have everything photographed and in a Book. Now the book is hidden. No, just kidding.
Sharmin Adi
For a good reason.
Kaia Gerber
Because.
Cindy Crawford
Have you seen that Alaia dress since?
Kaia Gerber
No, but I love. Nothing makes me happier. Like, if she wants to wear something that I wore 30 years ago, like, what bigger compliment is that?
Christian Allaire
Is there anything off limits, Cindy, that you would never let her know?
Kaia Gerber
Absolutely. Really? No.
Cindy Crawford
Wedding dress, maybe?
Kaia Gerber
No, I would love for you to wear my wedding. My wedding dress is so cute. It's a little John Galliano off the rack. Very cute.
Cindy Crawford
The coolest wedding dress ever. I've had that one for a while.
Kaia Gerber
So. Yeah, you could. You could get. You could have that for the night before or something.
Christian Allaire
I love that.
Chloe Shama
Yeah.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah. No, I would be. I mean, what am I doing with. I actually was not. There's a lot more that I should have saved. But, you know, I was young. I was Kaya's age in a small apartment in New York. Like, I got rid of stuff that I like, I. Kicking myself. But at a certain point, I realized, like, I should archive some of this stuff and save it, and I'm happy I did. And I would love for Kaia to wear anything she wants. But I also was like, I just had a T shirt that I was able to do for the Vogue auction. I had a Christian Dior T shirt and one of my Oscar dresses.
Cindy Crawford
Well, don't get. Don't auction off too much.
Kaia Gerber
I know I should have bought the dress. I should have actually just donated it.
Sharmin Adi
And then bought it.
Cindy Crawford
No, but I do like, her archives are so good. And I actually feel quite guilty for. Should I have children in the future? So much of what the way that it works now is. A lot of it is borrowed and you're not really. I don't have an archive like yours. I'm starting to build it. I have a lot of Sarah Burton, because Sarah is so lovely and gives you everything that you wear, which is pretty rare, I will say, from a designer. And so I have an archive of, like, really incredible pieces that she's made and now Givenchy pieces. But. But yeah, it's. It's like I. I hope that I have incredible pieces, too. And I actually, like. I. I bought a vintage Alaia coat the other day, which I'm sure my mom has basically a similar one.
Kaia Gerber
Well, you wore mine at first. Fashion.
Cindy Crawford
I know. And then you took it back and I haven't seen it since. But yes, I'm trying to build out something of an archive.
Christian Allaire
Is there any. Cindy, you said regrets of giving. Is there anything in your mind that you still think about? Today, the one that got away?
Kaia Gerber
Well, yes. My red Oscar dress is one.
Cindy Crawford
Who has it?
Kaia Gerber
I don't know. Someone bought it and it did raise a lot of money. And then I. Two dresses. Well, I had my very first designer dress that I bought. I had started modeling and I saw in the back of a magazine or in a magazine, there was a shot of a Calvin Klein dress from the back. It was backless dress, black sheath dress, backless. And I remember Arthur Elgort took the pictures. I didn't know Arthur at the time, but. And you know how you look in the back of the magazine and it says where to buy? And I tracked it down and I wore that to my prom. And it was the most inappropriate prom dress for where I went because everyone else, everyone else was wearing, like, frilly Gunne Sax dresses, and I had, like, this Calvin Klein black sheath dress. And I just remember one of my teachers, like, he didn't realize my back was open and he put his arm on my back. And then he felt so uncomfortable. Like, you know, he felt like he was being creepy or something. That dress, I don't know where it is. And then I had a Mugler dress, like a black, almost like a strapless, almost like a Marilyn Monroe dress. But it had, like, the little curly cues up here that I wore to the first kind of cocktail event I went to as a model in Chicago. And I haven't been able to, like, it. Got lost in a mood.
Cindy Crawford
You're gutting me right now.
Kaia Gerber
I know. So those are two that I. They just went missing.
Christian Allaire
That's tough.
Kaia Gerber
And I wish I had them. Yeah. And I had, like, a lot of Alaia, like, but the leggings and stuff, but they would just kind of get stretched out at a certain point. Like. But it did. It did hurt me to get on them.
Christian Allaire
Well, I mean, Kaia, it's kind of incredible that you have your mom icon, supermodel as a resource to really, like, ask for advice or tips.
Cindy Crawford
It's ridiculous.
Christian Allaire
What would you say is sort of like the biggest lessons she's passed down to you about being in this crazy, amazing industry?
Cindy Crawford
It's so hard to choose just one. Well, one thing I will say about my mom is she's not like an advice giver. She's not a you're not successful. That's so good. You're not a let me tell you, the way of the world kind of woman. You're a lead by example kind of person. So I think a lot of what I've attained from you is More so just through your actions and through watching the way that you navigate the world in a way that makes me so proud to be your daughter and respect you so much. And the amazing thing about having been in a career that, like, my mother has been in for so long, I get to hear, just like she talked about seeing me through other people's eyes. Like, I get to hear stories about her from other people, and they're always so positive about how kind she. Like, from the moment I started working in this industry, it was always how kind she was, how smart she was, how well she navigated it, how funny you are, how on time she always was. And so, like, that, I think, was the most impactful was hearing how other people just told me how much. How adored you are. And, like, I always adored you personally. But then to be in this world and hear about everyone and how much they respected you, I just had a whole new level of respect. So you don't have to write me.
Chloe Mel
A Mother's Day card now.
Cindy Crawford
Oh, please.
Kaia Gerber
This is what I mean.
Cindy Crawford
Send me the transcription.
Kaia Gerber
Her Mother's Day cards are like this, honestly. And it was so great.
Cindy Crawford
But it's a thank you. It's. It's really like. That's what it is. It's like. And I think a lot of her lessons were like, she's very. The one thing she's really a stickler on is being punctual. But I'm so grateful that she instilled that in me because I. I am now someone who. That. Who values that so much. And especially if I'm meeting you somewhere, I am not late.
Kaia Gerber
I was gonna say, like, even, you know, like, kind of your. The advice that a parent would give a kid. My son, who's two years older than Kaya Presley, he started a job. His very first job was working at a smoothie shop in Malibu. And I gave him the same advice that I gave Kya when she started working, which is be on time, be prepared, and stay off your phone. And, like, get to. Crucially, I was gonna say, you are.
Cindy Crawford
Worse than I am on the phone. Missing.
Kaia Gerber
No, like, doing hair and makeup is what I mean.
Cindy Crawford
I'm not on my phone wearing hair and makeup.
Kaia Gerber
I'm actually. I don't know. I'm teasing you. That was kind of like a joke. But we can run the tapes back.
Cindy Crawford
About who's on their phone during hair and makeup. Missy.
Kaia Gerber
Really? Oh, maybe. I don't even know. But the thing is, what I was trying to tell both my kids is, like, you might meet Your. You don't know. Your best friend might be the person, you know, that's doing your makeup or doing your hair. I mean. Cause I have found that in the fashion industry, I've met so many of my friends. And it's not necessarily the people who think it's a lot of time, it's the hair and makeup people because you spend the most quality time with them. And you know, sometimes, and I wrote about this in my book, like, you know, you kind of come in and not every day do you feel like Kaia Gerber or Cindy Crawford. Right. And so sometimes you like slink into the studio with your sunglasses on. You're trying to just like get in that makeup chair. And then the hair and makeup job, their team is, you know, to transform you into whatever version of you that, you know, the photographer and everybody wants. And part of that is, yes, their skills doing hair and makeup, but part of it is also them emotionally helping you become that thing. So like, you know, you might have had a fight with your boyfriend or, you know, whatever, you might have a pimple and you feel really self conscious of it. They like talk you through it and they help you if you let them.
Cindy Crawford
Yeah, if you let them in and if. And you know, and if they're also like open. And I think that we both pick up on that. And yeah, so many of the people I'm the closest to are those people, the hair and the makeup. And a lot of them, like were assisting when I was starting out. And I've now gotten to see, you know, become the main hair makeup person on a job. And that's like so much fun for me because we. You really do grow with people in this industry. If, if you're open to that and like it, it can be all about human connection if you let it. And I think I saw you do that. And all your close friends were people you knew from this job. And yeah, I've tried to kind of do the same, I guess.
Chloe Shama
Yeah, you guys have such a lovely, close, clearly loving relationship. Cindy, I'm also a mom and I always want to ask other moms who have good relationships with their daughters what makes it work and how do you foster the closeness? What are your guiding principles on that front?
Kaia Gerber
That actually might be a more interesting question for Kaya because she would be able to tell you what works and what doesn't work. But I. My mother is fortunately still with us. I'm very close to her. I'm one of three girls and I think like Kaya said that I'M not one. A big one to give advice. And I think I would just refine that to say, I'm not one to give unasked advice. Especially I try. And I got that from my own mother. She's like, you know, she's like, I really try not to give advice unless you ask. But if you ask, I'm gonna tell you the truth. And. And I think that both my kids know. If they ask or if I say, do you want to hear my opinion? They know. If you know, they know. They're going to. Well, first of all, if I ask, they probably know it's not going to be. The opinion is probably going to be contrary to what you're thinking. Right. But I try to at least be invited to give my opinion. And my mother has another great phrase that. That I think is genius. She says, show up, shut up, and wear beige.
Chloe Shama
Yeah.
Kaia Gerber
And she's like, sometimes, like, that's your role as a mother. Especially, like, as your children are blossoming and coming into themselves, you have to take a step back and, like, let them blossom. And you just show up, shut up, and wear beige.
Cindy Crawford
By the way, you in beige, you're still Cindy Crawford, even if you're wearing beige.
Kaia Gerber
I've seen you covered in beige.
Christian Allaire
But I like that. I'm gonna take that to heart.
Chloe Shama
Yeah.
Cindy Crawford
I always have felt like I could come to you without judgment. Like, even if it was advice or an opinion that I didn't want to hear, it was never infected with judgment. It was always from a place of love. So I think, like, having a relationship where I really felt like there wasn't anything I could tell you that would make you think differently of me as a human being. And then I also think, like, you let me. You still let me make mistakes. And I can imagine. I mean, I feel it with my friends. Like, it's so hard to watch someone you love do something that you know is going to hurt them or that, you know, is destructive to them or that, you know, is not, you know, quote unquote, the right thing, their highest good, but you have to let them do it. And, like, I think so much of it is. It's not about breaking the fall. It's about being there after the fall to just, like, scraping it up.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah.
Cindy Crawford
Scrape me off the floor kind of thing. And. Or just, like, sit on the floor and cry with me, you know? And I think, like. Like, I remember my first, like, massive heartbreak breakup was like, you. It was during the pandemic, and you were there and you didn't like, sit me down and be like, let's talk about heartbreak. Like, we watched Terms of Endearment and we just both sobbed on the couch. And, like, we didn't. I don't even think we really talked about the breakup. It was just like, there is someone going through it with me. And I think, like, that's such a great example of the way that you mother is like. Like, I'm not. Just because I've gone through it doesn't make me above you. It's like, I'll go through it again with you.
Christian Allaire
That's beautiful.
Chloe Shama
Humility is underappreciated maternal virtue, I'm realizing. Yeah, but a good one.
Kaia Gerber
Well, I think about, like, this generation, like, you know, because I grew up, you know, I graduated from high school in 84. I didn't have a cell phone. My mom let me go to Japan for two months while I was 17 years old. I talked to her one time, and I think she was parenting from a place of no news is good news. And I think that's flipped now. And, like, we're so tethered to our children through their phones and, oh, my gosh, she didn't text me back in five minutes. She must be in an accident. And I really try to remember, wait. My mother let me. Like, we had a curfew, and as long as we were home by curfew, no questions asked, you know, it was like, okay, now if you were late, that's another story. You got grounded one week. Every minute you were there, you never grounded.
Cindy Crawford
This, I don't think.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah, like, you guys didn't really. We didn't have those kind of rules. And also, you guys were. You guys were pretty good at the time where I think grounding would have been effective, you know, if I could have grounded you at other times.
Cindy Crawford
But you were an adult by then. She'd ground me today if she could.
Christian Allaire
Love that.
Chloe Shama
Yeah.
Christian Allaire
Well, speaking of other famous mother daughter duos, Lisa Rinna recently said that she cried when she saw her daughter Emilia Gray walking for Gautier. She's saying it was a dream come true for both her and her. Like, for both of them. So has there been any pinch me moments for you that sort of stand out as Kya's mom? And maybe for you, Kya, personally, have.
Cindy Crawford
You ever cried seeing me walk?
Kaia Gerber
No, but by the way, that wouldn't be the thing. Like what the things. Like, like, I'm proud of her for her book club because she started a book club out of boredom during the pandemic. And has turned it into something that's getting. Well, not just young people, but especially young people excited about reading books and talking about books. But also, you're a smart businesswoman. Like, figured out how to monetize it and create opportunity for yourself with it. So I think the things where I'm most proud of Kaia, not that I'm not proud of her for modeling. Of course I am. And how she handles herself. And I'm probably most proud when I get good feedback, like, oh, we worked with Kaia and she was on time, and she's so polite, and I'm like, thank you. I know she can do. I know that you can do the work as a model. So it's more about who she is as a person. I think that I'm most proud of.
Cindy Crawford
Like, one of the best actual. And some of the only actual modeling advice that you ever gave me was. Was just try to have a thought or a feeling behind whatever the look is. And I still do that. So it's like, if I am supposed to be smiling, like, I genuinely think of something that makes me smile, and it's like it's a secret with myself. I don't tell anyone what it is. Sometimes it's like something that's making me laugh and I don't have to share it. But I do appreciate that advice, and it's been very valuable.
Chloe Shama
You guys both split your time between New York City and Malibu. Do you have a perfect New York City afternoon together that you can share with us?
Cindy Crawford
Ooh, you took me bra shopping that one time, and still the only bras that I have.
Kaia Gerber
I took her to, like, a proper bra fit, you know, like.
Chloe Shama
Yeah, there's some old. Where they, like, I don't know if.
Cindy Crawford
They'Re supposed to, but they sort of just, like.
Chloe Shama
I think it's mandatory that they do that.
Cindy Crawford
Yeah, they fill you up and they.
Kaia Gerber
Welcome to adulthood, honey. I think I would say more. This is what my perfect day would be. Would to go to theater and then to go for dinner afterwards, I think. Or we'll go to a workout class together. I think we're both. When we're in New York, there's usually. We're usually working or at least me. I spend less time there now than Kaia does, so I'm usually, like, in and out. But to do something, like, cultural, like, something New Yorky that I can do in Malibu, that's what I real. You know, there's so many great restaurants, so it's always seeing people and trying to do, like, Go to a museum or walk through Central park when the trees are blooming. Or see some theater.
Chloe Shama
Yeah.
Christian Allaire
Well, the weather is glorious here right now. So you guys just have a New York day.
Kaia Gerber
Okay.
Cindy Crawford
And a lot of good plays.
Chloe Shama
A lot of good plays, right?
Christian Allaire
Yeah.
Cindy Crawford
There's so much good theater. I was looking at the announcements of the nominations yesterday, and it was like, there's so much I haven't seen that I really. I want to get back while everything's still there. Because, I mean, every. Every trip to New York that I go to, I see as much as I possibly can. I think I saw, like, three plays when I was there for four days.
Kaia Gerber
I was gonna say you were only.
Cindy Crawford
There four days, so I. Yes, there's so much good stuff. So I hope I get back in May to see a lot of it.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah, we're good theater partners.
Cindy Crawford
Yeah. I mean, you took me to Wicked so many times, and I thank you for that.
Chloe Shama
Kya, you're such a huge reader. We've talked about the book club already. I always look at it to see what you recommend. Cause you have such excellent taste. Do you guys share recommendations? Do you have the same book, similar tastes, or.
Cindy Crawford
We have different tastes at this moment in our lives. But I. I credit my mom so much to my love of reading. Like, she reads just as much as I do, if not more. And probably same amount.
Kaia Gerber
Yeah, probably.
Cindy Crawford
And, like, growing up, you know, she was reading Of Mice and Men to me when I was seven or something.
Chloe Shama
Wow.
Cindy Crawford
And I remember doing my book report on that in second grade, and the teachers were all like, what's wrong with you? I was like, so much.
Kaia Gerber
I feel like Pressley might have had it as an assignment because I think.
Cindy Crawford
My brother, who's two years older, had it as an assignment, and I was just interested in it. And so I think my love of literature really was sparked by you. And we share recommendations sometimes, but I feel like the way you explain it is like, when you were my age, you were also into the more kind of heady, philosophical things.
Kaia Gerber
Questioning, you know, Definitely. I did that in my time.
Cindy Crawford
And now you're more into the, like, escapism stuff A little more.
Kaia Gerber
I mean, not full. And I never know.
Cindy Crawford
Jodi Picolt.
Kaia Gerber
Jodi Picolt. I like Kristin Hannah. I like a lot of women authors. I like historical fiction. You know, I actually. I just read Christie Brinkley's autobiography, and it was. It was fun. And I actually. She's one generation before me, but I still learned. And I knew her, obviously, and watched her, but I Learned so much. So I do like biographies.
Cindy Crawford
There's a lot of intersection, though. Like, I'm glad my mom died. The net McCurdy book.
Kaia Gerber
Like, you loved that.
Cindy Crawford
I read that and I knew she would love that. In Memoriam, the Alice Wynne about World War I. I read new. Like, yeah. So there's a lot of intersection. And then there's sometimes ones where I'm like. Like, this is a little crazy to recommend her, but she always reads my recommendations, which, like, to me, that is a love language. And, like, I show my love by curating book lists for people or giving them books. And when they read them, that is like a sign of like, I love you too. For me, it's like, I can't tell you, like, if someone never did anything else to show me love, like, that would be enough. And every time I recommend you a book, you read it. And so even, like Milk Fed, which was a pretty intense one, and like, a queer novel you. You read and, like, queer kind of erotic novel. And you read it, I would say. Yeah. And did you. And I think you enjoyed it.

The other day, I, like, went on a real ebay spree. There's this huge push for, like, 80s opulence and 80s sort of glamour. And we're going to see that returning. And so I was already kind of tapped into that just from my gorgeous ebay watch list. And I found a really beautiful Chloe blazer from the 80s and a really great Miu Miu kilt, These great Dior boots. And I'm combining them all together. Sometimes trend forecasting doesn't require something that's gonna be, like, produced in the future. Sometimes you can, like, tap into the past and tap into the archive as well. That's what makes ebay a fun place to actually discover things because you're not going in with something so specific in mind, but you have an idea of what you're interested in or what you're excited about or, you know, just truly trend forecasting. And so one thing that I would say people should be watching out for is like very opulent, 80s style.
