This year I am rewarding myself for spring cleaning with an upgraded summer wardrobe for my kids and myself. Quince has 100% European linen starting at $30, Italian leather sandals, luxury swimwear, everything you need to look and feel effortlessly put together year after year. My kids run their clothes hard and the Quince clothes actually last. By working directly with top artisans and cutting out the middlemen, Quince gives you luxury without the markup. Their products are priced 50 to 80% less than what you'd find from similar brands. I just upgraded Alice Albert's 3T3 toddler pair of jeans to four. Now she can have her cute little. They come in packs of twos, which is so cute. There's like the dark wash and the lighter wash. So depending on her mood, I let her choose what vibe she's looking for. Treat your closet to a little summer glow. Up with quince. Go to quince.com runthrough for free shipping on your order and 365 day returns. This is the run through. I'm Chloe Mel.
Cho Minotti
I'm Cho Minotti.
Nicole Phelps
And I'm Nicole Phelps.
Chloe Mel
We had the best time last time when we answered our listener queries, and this time we thought, what better topic than to answer all of your style questions.
Nicole Phelps
Yes, and joining us today is our colleague, Laia Garcia Furtado, C Senior fashion news editor at Vogue and also the woman behind our new weekly addressed column on Vogue.com, that looks at Runway trends, street style and answers readers styling questions. Welcome, Laia.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Hello. Thank you for having me back on the pod.
Cho Minotti
Okay, guys, should we get started?
Chloe Mel
Let's go.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Let's do it.
Cho Minotti
So a lot of people are interested in elevating their style.
Chloe Mel
So one shoma's doing air quotes.
Cho Minotti
A listener wrote this. I'm graduating college this year and want to refine my style. How do I build looks that read cool young adult and not frat basic chic? Any advice given?
Chloe Mel
Frat basement chic.
Cho Minotti
I love that frat basement chic. I'm trying to visualize what it actually looks like.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I mean, that sounds like. It sounds like sweatpants, right? I think that's really. I mean, I'm going to sound very like old man yells at clout. But I think it's really like, you know, don't wear sweatpants. Don't wear leggings at the office.
Chloe Mel
Oh, my God.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Like, do not shudder.
Nicole Phelps
What about a midriff clutching my pearls?
Laia Garcia Furtado
No midriffs.
Chloe Mel
Oh, now she's activated.
Laia Garcia Furtado
No, listen, I. Okay, I'm 40 years old, so I don't think that I should be. So like, young people these days, but young people these days, the way they dress for the office, it really leaves me shaken sometimes. Like, you can't wear jorts.
Chloe Mel
No, jorts are.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Jorts are not appropriate. You can't wear, like, sheer.
Chloe Mel
Does everyone know what jorts are?
Laia Garcia Furtado
Jean shorts.
Nicole Phelps
What if they're knee length?
Laia Garcia Furtado
Knee length is fine. But then I think, like, I think the.
Chloe Mel
It's very hard to pull off a dress.
Cho Minotti
How do you style Jade?
Chloe Mel
Herman Diaz could do it.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I think you can do it. But this is. I think this is the. Going back to. The question about being elevated is like, if you're gonna do something that's kind of very casual, like a long jort, new metal short as I like to call it. You know, they like, end at the knee and they're wide. Then you have to wear like, wear like a vintage Manolo mule. Like something that makes it look. Yeah.
Cho Minotti
Like.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah, midi heel or like, you know, wear the Jordan wear with like a little like Chanel or Chanel esque, like, jacket twin set. Something that makes it look like you didn't just like, roll out of bed.
Cho Minotti
This is my spring look.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I mean, it's very you. So I think it's like if you're going to do casual, you have to mix it with something that looks nicer so that it doesn't. So it looks like you. You just want to. I feel like it's just like you want to look like you put in a little bit of effort.
Cho Minotti
Yeah.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Like, people love effortless, but that. But effortless sometimes is taken to mean, like, sloppy, and that's not the vibe.
Cho Minotti
Yeah. I mean, my general rule of thumb, because I dress quite casually for the office and I'M I'm always like, am I too casual? When I'm wearing, like, slacks or a suit, you can wear sneakers.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Correct.
Cho Minotti
You know, and then when I'm wearing, you know, jeans and a T shirt, then I'll make sure that I'm wearing a proper shoe. A heel. I think if you can, you know, it's the opposite theory or whatever they call it.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah.
Chloe Mel
What is the opposite theory?
Laia Garcia Furtado
I think it's just.
Cho Minotti
It's just opposite shoe theory. But this is the opposite theory in general.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah, I think it's just like, you wear the opposite of what you're. So, like, if you're wearing.
Chloe Mel
Oh, George Costanza does that. He's. He does. He, like, does whatever he thinks he.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yes, he does the opposite of what he thinks.
Nicole Phelps
Surprise.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I was. I was thinking of Morning Miss. Because he dresses according to mood, which. Same. But yeah, it's like, if you're wearing. It's like, why. If you're wearing, like, a ball skirt, you can wear a tank top. And it looks really good because it's unexpected. Like, you want. Oh, here's the word people love. It's a juxtaposition.
Cho Minotti
Yeah.
Chloe Mel
I will say for the youth.
Cho Minotti
Good.
Chloe Mel
Effortless style has a lot of effort. Never be totally effortless. There should be some effort.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yes, you can, like, that's all I have to say. Work your way up to that. You know, it's.
Cho Minotti
Or wear a red lip. I mean, glam can be included.
Laia Garcia Furtado
That's effort.
Cho Minotti
I do think, like, if you're wearing a white T shirt, you can, like, you know, wear a. Wear a dude.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Wear self respect. Wear a beautiful earring. Like, you know, just something that makes it so that you're a little.
Nicole Phelps
The editors. The bane of the editor's existence. How do you spell zhuzh?
Chloe Mel
It's true.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I do. H, O, U, J. I do. Z. H, O, U, S, H. That's Zush.
Chloe Mel
It's. How did the French.
Cho Minotti
Well, J, E, U, J, E, Z. No clue. Over here. Don't ask me.
Chloe Mel
Someone's looking with such disdain at all.
Nicole Phelps
Of us right now.
Cho Minotti
Like, I don't know.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I love juice.
Chloe Mel
Laia, I want to know about your tips for layering and looking chic. I know that you answered this in one of your columns, but you also. I feel like you've been owning the skirt over pant.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I haven't really been into. Oh, this is another graphic that Parker.
Chloe Mel
Ate that was so.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Because the person that so submitted this question on the Vogue app. Please like and subscribe. They said, how can I dress in layers, without looking like that chair that you have in your bedroom, which is like an iconic question. Immediately I was like, we are answering this because I do have that chair.
Chloe Mel
Everyone has that chair.
Laia Garcia Furtado
And it's back. It's the chair that you like.
Cho Minotti
Chair. Which chair?
Laia Garcia Furtado
It's the chair that you put the.
Chloe Mel
Stuff that all your clothes pile up on.
You definitely have.
Cho Minotti
Oh, my God, I have the chair.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah. And you're like, oh, I'm going to put this away. And then you're like, oh, I'm just gonna put this back on. Because it's been a while.
Chloe Mel
Like Friday, it's like a mountain.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah.
Cho Minotti
It's horrible.
Chloe Mel
Sunday, it's like one thing.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah. So I think the important thing about this is you, if you want to do like real, real head layering, you gotta embrace being the chair. Like, I think I feel like all of these sort of like, experimenting with things like this. Like, you have to commit fully. But I feel it's really about, like, proportion. Like, I like to wear. I have been wearing a lot of long dresses that are like, in the sort of no man's land. Below your knee and the calf. Like a trouser, I think kind of looks cool because I don't like wearing tights. I realized. So when it was winter.
Cho Minotti
Me neither.
Laia Garcia Furtado
So in the winter, I was just like, I'm just gonna wear a pant.
Cho Minotti
Yeah, I love a pant under a dress.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah. And then if you're like layering on top, it's like, is a jacket hit at your waist or if the skirt hits, like. Like, it's just like how many times you're chopping up your body. But you do have to embrace it a little bit. I always think of this person that wrote this question also said that they are five, three. And I always think obviously of the Olsens, who are famously short and famously swaddled. Yeah. And they love to just, like, pile it on. And it looks good because they don't fit.
Chloe Mel
It's a Fagin from Oliver Twist. And it somehow works.
Laia Garcia Furtado
It always works. It always works. Because I think you just have to be unafra. You just gotta go for it.
Chloe Mel
Those Olsens. No fear.
Laia Garcia Furtado
No fear. God bless em. Love em.
Cho Minotti
Well, I guess I have a question for you, Laia and Nicole, as we head into summer. What are some staple clothing items that you gravitate towards to keep you cool but still look chic? This is a tricky one in New York. I don't know how envy you. I never had to break out sandals once last summer and I was quite happy.
Chloe Mel
Wow.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Do you Remember Fashion Week 2, September? God, I've never felt so disgusting in my entire life.
Nicole Phelps
And I sweat through my shirt on the way to the Michael Kors show. It was. That's horrible.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Those streets constantly sweating. So I don't even look at them. I really should have been tilt guys.
Chloe Mel
I really, I'm like.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I think a shoe. Like today I'm wearing my Kalina Strata UGG platform crazy sandals. And I feel like if you have a really good shoe, then you can wear like a bare, you know, a simple cotton dress. And then it's not from the ground up.
Cho Minotti
Breezy, breezy.
Nicole Phelps
Something away from the body is really important.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah. And then it's hard on the terrain because if you wear something too short and you sit down, your butt is on the seat.
Cho Minotti
And then you carry layers with you. What about the ace going from AC to go?
Nicole Phelps
I keep like a sweater here in the summer or a blanket, right. And just put it around my shoulders.
Chloe Mel
I always have a thin button down cardigan that I have on my person at all times. Or a really thin like pashmina.
Nicole Phelps
Back in the day, I had a space heater@style.com?
Chloe Mel
What?
Cho Minotti
Yes. That's really crazy.
Laia Garcia Furtado
It's also a fire hazard.
Nicole Phelps
It's a fire hazard they wouldn't allow in this building. But in the old building we were in different times.
Cho Minotti
My mom fell asleep in front of a space heater and caught on fire. No, no.
Laia Garcia Furtado
So scared.
Cho Minotti
Long time ago, but still not a style tip. Not a style. Not with like a long caftan. Do not do this at home, guys.
Nicole Phelps
We should also interject and say our colleague Jose Crialas Anzueta carries around one of those little fans.
Cho Minotti
Oh, yeah, they're excellent. They're excellent.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I like an old timey. You know, you can't see me, but I'm shaking a fan with my invisible fan in my wrist.
Nicole Phelps
Yes, I have one of those in my purse in the summer too.
Laia Garcia Furtado
But then sometimes the subway gets so hot and you're just blowing hot air at yourself. And that's. Anyway, we love New York summers, but they're the most fun. It's like, it's so disgusting. But the vibe in New York in the summer is so good. When it's like still daylight at 8, you go out with friends and then you're like, it's a good vibe. Let's go out somewhere else. And then it's like you end up in someone's rooftop and you're like, wow, amazing days.
Cho Minotti
You Just never know where you'll end up.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah.
Nicole Phelps
Free and easy.
Cho Minotti
The.

Cho Minotti
Someone else asked. I feel like I'm always defaulting to black or neutral colors because I'm too afraid to try anything bolder. What are some tips for actually putting colors together for your wardrobe?
Chloe Mel
What's your color theory? Isn't there something about that?
Laia Garcia Furtado
I don't have. Like, I have two black items in my closet, so I'm the opposite of this, right? Anytime that there's a dress code that's like all black, I am struggling.
Chloe Mel
Who does an all black dress code?
Laia Garcia Furtado
You know, well, okay, here's one. One time I'm like, here's one. I have an exp. I have a. I have a receipt. Before I started working here. Yeah, I'm naming names and it's us. Before I started working here, I was covering the CFDA awards, and for some reason, the dress code was we for the press outside, we had to wear all black and I had to like, borrow it dress because I don't say.
Cho Minotti
I have the same problem.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah.
Chloe Mel
I don't have a lot now.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I have like two black dresses and a skirt just so you. So I'm getting better at it.
Cho Minotti
I have one of your skirts that. Oh, yeah, Zara sent to mistakenly. And.
Laia Garcia Furtado
And like, it's a good skirt.
Cho Minotti
It isn't it?
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah. So I think it's probably more. Let's see, what is an easy way to dip your toe? Like, maybe buy one thing that, like a shirt that you like in a color and then you can mix that in. Easy. Or even a cardigan. If you like a cardigan. Like J. Crew makes really bright cashmere cardigans, like all the time. Like, that seems like an easy way to just like throw it on and then test the waters.
Cho Minotti
Like solids. Don't try patterns and prints. Just go with solids first. And I think it's like, it always looks good with like, you know, something black and a bright, really bright color.
Chloe Mel
I also feel like you don't have to go full Crayola if you're dipping your toe. Like, I wear. I rarely wear black, but I wear a lot of dark brown and navy, and that's sort of my neutrals. And I feel like I can mix like pink with brown or, you know, red with a navy. And so you can sort of start by wearing some neutral adjacent colors and then start your popping.
Cho Minotti
Yeah. I find after I go to an exhibit, imagine I go to a Matisse exhibit. I always come away with, oh, I should pair this color with this color and this color with this.
Chloe Mel
Oh, I thought you go to Matisse exhibits.
Cho Minotti
I don't know. Not enough. But like a David Hockney, whatever. Like, I think often go.
Chloe Mel
Did you go to the. The new Harley?
Nicole Phelps
No, I'm down.
Chloe Mel
Nicole just went.
Cho Minotti
And not so dynamite. No. It was incredible the way they were shaking your head.
Nicole Phelps
I was so good.
Cho Minotti
I love so. So for me, if I'm. There are certain really iconic painters and artists I think just have such an amazing color sense. And David Hockney and Matisse happen to be favorites of mine. So maybe start like. Yeah, just Google some.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I mean, I think that's what butter yellow is, having such a big moment. Because butter yellow is a color, but it's also so easy to be like, if you're gonna wear beige or khaki, wear a butter yellow thing instead.
Cho Minotti
Last year.
Laia Garcia Furtado
There you go.
Nicole Phelps
That was a great look.
Cho Minotti
Thanks.
Laia Garcia Furtado
It's like a quick switch Also, I agree with Chloe that, like, brown is a really good thing to just like, replace because brown and pink looks so good and so editorial.
Cho Minotti
And it's like, go look at some early 90s. Like.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah, Prada, Marnie.
Cho Minotti
Really great combinations of brown. Some of those.
Chloe Mel
Like, more everything goes with brown, personally.
Cho Minotti
Yeah, same.
Laia Garcia Furtado
It's.
Cho Minotti
It's your version of black.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah, yeah.
Cho Minotti
What I don't love so, so much, but this is just personal. I just can't do all the, like 50 shades of beige. Like, I can't. And that neutral, like.
Laia Garcia Furtado
But I. But for the people that pull it off nude, I love it for them.
Cho Minotti
Yeah.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Except. Okay, but remember that Phoebe Celine collection that was all like, nude and brown and yellow and it was amazing.
Cho Minotti
But not my favorite Phoebe.
Laia Garcia Furtado
What's your favorite Phoebe, though?
Chloe Mel
Not my favorite Phoebe is a great.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Your favorite Phoebe was the best.
Chloe Mel
You know which one?
Nicole Phelps
Paintbro.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah, whatever.
Nicole Phelps
Brush strokes.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Brush strokes. Yeah.
Cho Minotti
The brushstrokes are inspired by that. Yes.
Nicole Phelps
As have been many designers over the years.
Laia Garcia Furtado
What is it? The. It was the either 80s and Italian. And that was.
Cho Minotti
Oh, Memphis.
Laia Garcia Furtado
The Memphis collection.
Cho Minotti
It was the Memphis collection.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah.
Cho Minotti
So good. I mean, I love how Phoebe did florals too, because I think florals can get very kind of staid, but she makes them cool.
Laia Garcia Furtado
That rose print, another iconic.
Cho Minotti
So once you've mastered solids, then you can go on to like, crazy florals.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Agreet.
Chloe Mel
Okay, choma, this one might be perfect for you.
Okay, what is the best way to.
Style a ballet flat and what are your favorite ways to wear them? I feel like you're a very strong flat wearer.
Cho Minotti
Oh, I am a flat wearer. Yeah. I think it all depends. I mean, I've seen it. I love it with a white sock. I love it so many different ways. I think it really depends. I don't think proportionally it works for me to do that because I can't really wear flats with skirts. Just doesn't work for me on my body. But I mean, I like it with a wide pant. A wider pant. I don't love, like a flat with a skinny pant. I think a wider pant looks better. But I love it with. I like it girly with like. Yeah, like a knee length skirt with some socks. But I actually think you're probably better at this.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I love a ballet flat.
Cho Minotti
Yeah.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I love. I think the secret to having a ballet flat wardrobe is to have, like, different toe shapes. Like, I love a belay flat with a white, like, pant. But it always needs to be like A pointy toe or like an almond toe. Which is the best kind of toe.
Cho Minotti
Of an almond toe.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Because I feel like the round toe and a wide leg can sometimes, like, cut the line.
Cho Minotti
Yeah.
Laia Garcia Furtado
And you want the line to flow.
Cho Minotti
Yeah.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I mean, I think I have. Mostly I just wear ballet flats.
Cho Minotti
Really?
Nicole Phelps
I don't have a single pair of ballet flats.
Laia Garcia Furtado
But you're. Which is crazy because you're so like comfort first. Like when you're walking with Nicole to go.
Chloe Mel
A sturdy shoe.
Laia Garcia Furtado
She stretched.
Cho Minotti
What did you call something a bit.
Laia Garcia Furtado
A working woman shoe. Oh, yeah.
Chloe Mel
Laia tmed the wws. The working woman's shoe.
Laia Garcia Furtado
It's a flat, but it's. But it has a sole flat. Yeah. Nicole doesn't like to have. No support is what it comes down to.
Cho Minotti
I know my boyfriend always looks at me and like, are you comfortable in those?
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah, like, I like.
Cho Minotti
Yeah.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Like the real mesh flats. I am aware that it's like walking barefoot, but I love them. But the working woman shoe is. It's flat, but then it has, like, sturdy leather sole. Like a little bit of a chunky heel. And then that's how you do it.
Cho Minotti
Got it, got it.
Laia Garcia Furtado
And they're a little bit more. I feel like they're more versatile in a way.
Cho Minotti
Yeah. You have a really good wardrobe of. Of ballet flats.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Thank you. I have been working on it.
Chloe Mel
It's a collection.
Laia Garcia Furtado
It's an archive.
Cho Minotti
Because I still. I actually really like. I mean, I like the full gamut. I like the Chanel ones too. I love. Yeah, they're so good. They're not almond though, are they? They're more rounded.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah. But sometimes, you know, seasonally you can find something kooky.
Cho Minotti
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love those.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Can't wait to see what the first Matteo flat.
Cho Minotti
Oh, seriously, that would be so good. His interpretation of the ballet.
Chloe Mel
Ballet.
Laia Garcia Furtado
The blase ballet.
Nicole Phelps
Nice one, Chloe.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Copyright it. You heard it here first.
Chloe Mel
The run through will be back in a moment.

Chloe Mel
Someone asked, is there any such thing as too many accessories?
Cho Minotti
I think so. There's always. There's such thing as too many everything.
Chloe Mel
I mean, must we remind everyone of the Coco Chanel.
Cho Minotti
Oh, take one thing off.
Chloe Mel
Awesome.
Cho Minotti
Yeah, I mean, I think it really depends. Like, I think you just have to know how to do it. And some people break the rules, and then I'm like, oh, there are no rules.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Yeah, I think it's that because it's like every. Like when you see somebody that's wearing, like, a bunch of bracelets and rings all stacked, and I'm like, oh, I love that. Like, I can't do it.
Cho Minotti
Yeah.
Laia Garcia Furtado
But I love it.
Cho Minotti
She has, like, accessories dripping from every place part of her body.
Laia Garcia Furtado
She never looks back.
Cho Minotti
No.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Never. Not a day in her life.
Cho Minotti
No.
Chloe Mel
Vaguely. Don't try this at home vibes for me with Erykah Badu. But I respect.
Laia Garcia Furtado
But do you remember how good she looked at the mat when she had that, like, it's a face thing.
Chloe Mel
She's always looking great.
Laia Garcia Furtado
She's not tried out.
Chloe Mel
She has something I'm doing.
Laia Garcia Furtado
No, no, no. Correct. Yeah, but it's very. That I feel. It's like. But then, you know, take something off like Coco said. And then if you're like, oh, no, I want it back. Put it back on.
Chloe Mel
There you go.
Cho Minotti
Usually I struggle if it's like a necklace and big earrings and, you know, so I'll either do big earrings or the necklace or something.
Chloe Mel
But that is a good tip.
Where it's like, if you think you might have to take something off, try it. And if you really miss it, then that was the thing to keep on. I feel like that's when I ask, like, my husband, I'm like, which shoe? And he picks the wrong one. Then I realized that I always knew the right one. All right, Chen, we have one more.
Cho Minotti
What is your approach to shopping and bringing new clothes into your closet, but making sure you still make use of the old clothes in your closet as well? Because personally, I find that it's like, how do I keep everything in rotation? And sometimes, as we always say at the Hogue, you need to shop your own closet. But how does one actually practice this? And as soon as something goes into storage, is it dead?
Laia Garcia Furtado
Sort of. Yes. I don't have storage.
Nicole Phelps
Me neither.
Cho Minotti
Yeah, me neither.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I think I've made sort of rules for myself that aren't rule like that are based on things that I know. Like, I know that I love a stripe more than I love a polka dot. So if I see something that I like that is a polka dot, I'm.
Cho Minotti
Not a polka dot.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Has to be a very specific. Exactly. Like, I know that I like. Like, I said before, like, a skirt that is nowhere. So, like, if I see a skirt, I know that, like, if I buy it, it's going to get a lot of use. So I think, like, it's not even, like, rules. It's more like observing my own patterns and being like, you know, if you get that, like, you're not going to wear it.
Cho Minotti
So don't.
Laia Garcia Furtado
So I've just gotten very strict about. I mean, I also don't shop that much anymore, but I think having rules.
Cho Minotti
How often is not what's shopping. Not that much, like monthly.
Laia Garcia Furtado
No, I don't, I don't. I don't think. I buy things every month.
Cho Minotti
Right.
Chloe Mel
I buy things for my kids now every month. And that, like, satisfies the itch. The itch for me.
Laia Garcia Furtado
I'm about. I did buy Fede some swimsuits. A swimsuit last night.
Nicole Phelps
I think that there's nothing more satisfying than sort of rediscovering something in your closet. So the trouble with living in New York and having small closets is you have to sort of keep shedding stuff when you get new stuff. I. I mean, I often find I regret selling something or giving something away, but it's such a thrill when you pull something out that you haven't worn in three years or even longer and it really, you know, it's like meeting an old friend.
Cho Minotti
It is. I mean, some people say, some people, like Liana, a former colleague, she says if you haven't worn it for a year, then you should get rid of it, I believe.
Laia Garcia Furtado
No, no, no, that's not true.
Chloe Mel
You guys, this was so much fun. Very excited to invest in an almond toe flat. And thank you ladies, for a fantastic chat from flat to chat.
Nicole Phelps
Thank you so much.
Laia Garcia Furtado
Thank you for having me.
Chloe Mel

A listener poses a question about refining their style post-college, aiming to appear as a "cool young adult" rather than "frat basement chic." Laia Garcia Furtado offers practical advice:
Avoid Casual Staples in Formal Settings:
"Don't wear sweatpants. Don't wear leggings at the office." ([03:00])
Steer Clear of Jorts:
"Jean shorts are not appropriate unless they are knee-length." ([03:50])
Balance Casual with Polished Elements:
To prevent a sloppy appearance, mix casual items with refined pieces. For example, pairing long, wide-leg shorts with vintage Manolo Mule shoes or a Chanel-esque jacket to elevate the overall look.
Embrace Effortless Yet Polished Style:
Strive for an appearance that looks effortlessly stylish without appearing unkempt.
"People love effortless, but that sometimes is taken to mean sloppy, and that's not the vibe." ([04:46])
Timestamp: [07:10]–[09:00]
Layering is discussed as a key technique to enhance one's style while maintaining chicness.
Commit to Layering Fully:
Embrace layering as a deliberate style choice rather than an afterthought.
Focus on Proportions:
Ensure that layers complement each other in terms of length and fit. For instance, pairing a long dress with a cropped jacket can create a balanced silhouette.
Utilize Versatile Pieces:
Incorporate items like vintage jackets or structured pieces to add depth to layered outfits.
"If you're going to do something that's casual, you have to mix it with something that looks nicer so that it doesn't look like you just rolled out of bed." ([04:31])
Timestamp: [09:00]–[11:05]
As summer approaches, the discussion shifts to maintaining a stylish yet comfortable wardrobe.
Prioritize Quality Footwear:
A good pair of shoes can anchor a simple ensemble.
"A good shoe, like my Kalina Strata UGG platform crazy sandals, can make a simple cotton dress look stylish." ([09:54])
Carry Lightweight Layers:
Keep a thin button-down cardigan or a pashmina handy for fluctuating temperatures.
"I always have a thin button-down cardigan or a pashmina on my person at all times." ([10:31])
Utilize Practical Accessories:
Portable fans can be a lifesaver in the heat, despite some limitations.
"Our colleague Jose carries around one of those little fans, and I have one in my purse too." ([10:51])
Embrace the Vibrant Summer Vibe:
Despite the discomforts of a New York summer, the vibrant street life and social opportunities make it worthwhile.
Timestamp: [14:11]–[18:00]
Listeners seeking advice on incorporating bolder colors into their wardrobe receive the following tips:
Start with Bright Accents:
Incorporate a single bright item, such as a colorful cardigan or shirt, to add vibrancy without overwhelming the outfit.
"Buy a shirt that you like in a color and then you can mix that in." ([15:03])
Draw Inspiration from Art:
Look to artists like Matisse and David Hockney for color pairing inspiration.
"There are certain iconic painters who have such an amazing color sense. Maybe start by googling some." ([16:21])
Substitute Neutrals with Adaptable Colors:
Replace traditional neutrals like beige or khaki with versatile shades like butter yellow.
"Butter yellow is easy to incorporate as it can replace beige or khaki effortlessly." ([16:55])
Mix Neutrals with Brights:
Pair neutral colors with bright ones for an editorial and balanced look.
"Brown and pink looks so good and so editorial." ([16:58])
Timestamp: [18:27]–[21:05]
The episode delves into the nuanced art of styling ballet flats to enhance overall attire.
Different Toe Shapes:
Incorporate various toe shapes, such as almond or pointy toes, to increase versatility and maintain a streamlined look.
"The secret to having a ballet flat wardrobe is to have different toe shapes." ([19:31])
Pair with Appropriate Garments:
Ballet flats work best with wide-leg pants or knee-length skirts, avoiding skinny pants to maintain proportional balance.
"I love flats with wide pants because they balance the silhouette." ([19:12])
Opt for Functional Yet Stylish Flats:
Choose flats that offer both comfort and style, such as those with sturdy leather soles or a slight chunky heel.
"The working woman's shoe is flat but has a sturdy leather sole and a bit of a chunky heel." ([20:12])
Maintain an Organized Collection:
Building a diverse collection of ballet flats ensures readiness for various outfits and occasions.
"It's an archive. I have been working on it." ([20:32])
Timestamp: [21:51]–[23:03]
The conversation explores the fine line between enhancing an outfit and over-accessorizing.
Know When to Simplify:
If an outfit feels overloaded, remove one accessory to regain balance.
"Take one thing off." ([22:04])
Master the Art of Layering Accessories:
Stack bracelets and rings thoughtfully to create a cohesive look without appearing cluttered.
"When you see someone wearing a bunch of bracelets and rings all stacked, I love it, but I can't do it myself." ([22:22])
Embrace Statement Pieces Wisely:
Choose statement accessories that complement the outfit rather than dominate it.
"If you think you might have to take something off, try it. If you miss it, then that's the thing to keep on." ([23:03])
Timestamp: [23:21]–[25:47]
Effective strategies for integrating new pieces into an existing wardrobe while ensuring everything remains usable are discussed.
Understand Personal Style Patterns:
Develop personal rules based on what items you frequently wear and what complements your lifestyle.
"If you get something that you're not going to wear, then don't buy it." ([23:59])
Shop Your Closet First:
Before purchasing new items, explore what you already own to maximize usage and reduce unnecessary buying.
"Rediscovering something in your closet is incredibly satisfying." ([24:41])
Limit Shopping Frequency:
Adopt a more mindful approach to shopping by reducing the frequency of purchases to ensure each new item has a purpose.
"I've gotten very strict about not shopping that much anymore." ([24:22])
Embrace Minimalism:
Keeping a streamlined wardrobe helps in creating versatile outfits without the clutter of excess clothing.
"It's about observing my own patterns and knowing what will get a lot of use." ([24:00])
