Christian Allaire
Early birds, morning birds and night owls.
Taylor Antrim
How late did you. How late were you up, Chloe?
Chloe Mel
12:30.
Christian Allaire
Ooh, yeah, sounds right.
Taylor Antrim
After party at 222.
Shoma Menotti
Yeah.
Chloe Mel
Lloyd was raging. This morning. We are joined by our colleagues Taylor, Andrew and Christian Allaire, who I already just welcomed.
Taylor Antrim
Yes. We're still very happy to be here.
Christian Allaire
Happy to be here.
Taylor Antrim
Yeah. Yeah. We're excited about the Oscars, right?
Chloe Mel
We are. We are also excited for a climactic crescendo end to awards season at the moment. Are you going to correct my use of crescendo?
Taylor Antrim
Yeah, I'm like, that's future tense. So what's still to happen?
Chloe Mel
Well, I think of the Mets as like something coming, but you're right. Okay. I'm just fixing because I use crescendo
Taylor Antrim
wrong,
Chloe Mel
but this was a very exciting awards show. I thought all season long we've been waiting for this big moment. We've been obviously robustly covering each and every awards show. There seem to be more every season. But first, Shoma, I have to say it is my favorite litmus test to check in with you since you were sleeping peacefully when this was all going down and hear what made it through to you this morning. What were the highlights on the other side of the pond?
Shoma Menotti
Well, I think everybody's been thinking about this Oscar race between sinners and wham Buttle after another. And I think Michael B. Jordan winning really came through my feed really strongly. I also feel that Jessie Buckley from all angles, from the fashion perspective, the moment she hit the red carpet, that beautiful, romantic, ethereal Chanel dress that she wore was just perfect and just fit for an Oscar winner. And then her beautiful speech and talking about the chaos that exists inside a mother's home. I thought it was really moving and gorgeous. And I hope, Chloe, that resonated with you. Cause I thought it was beautiful.
Chloe Mel
Chaos exists for me in all areas. Just exuding chaos.
Shoma Menotti
It looked like a really fun night. It looked like a fun, exciting awards show. I mean, I could go on about best dressed, but we'll get into that a little bit later.
Chloe Mel
Well, okay, let's go into best dressed. Choma, who was your best dressed from the night?
Shoma Menotti
There were so, so many beautifully dressed people there. For me, it had to be Wumi Mosaku. I think she just looked incredible in Vuitton. I think it's so difficult to dress when you're expecting cause your body is changing so rapidly. I imagine that she's probably changed size over the course of this awards season. So shout out to all the tailors who've had to readjust these dresses as she's going along.
Chloe Mel
I love that, Joma. Shout out to the tailors. Yeah, she's.
Shoma Menotti
She hasn't had a misstep yet. And I thought that beautiful green, emerald green, sparkling Vuitton dress was just perfection. I also thought Renate Rinzvi looked amazing in that very simple Louis Vuitton column that had a long slit up to her thigh on the side, but was just incredibly elegant. And she was all in red. Red lip, red shoe, red dress. She looked stunning. Oh, my favorite of the season, Odessa Azion in Valentina.
Chloe Mel
She just does.
Shoma Menotti
She just shows. Yeah, she shows up as herself. And I think that very few actors get that kind of license, creative license, to just be themselves. And she looked incredible in this. I don't know whether it was pants or it was a robe, but it was an embroidered black velvet look from Valentino that just looked stunning. And she just looked so comfortable and cool. And then she wore this quite insane, insane Harris Reed number to the Vanity Fair after party. Looked incredible. She was corseted with these very high. I don't know what to call them, like, exaggerated epaulettes because they were literally like wings.
Chloe Mel
They looked like parts of a spaceship.
Shoma Menotti
They look like parts of a spaceship.
Chloe Mel
If I were her, I would have done the inverse. I would have been comfortable at the after party.
Shoma Menotti
No, no, no, no. Okay.
Chloe Mel
All right.
Shoma Menotti
I think the after party, you can go wild, you can go crazy. You want to show up, because, I mean, it must be so intimidating going to the Oscars for the first time as a new actor, don't you think? I'd want to be absolutely comfortable. And then you can let. And let your inner freak flag fly at the after party. So I thought she made the right choice in dressing that way, but, yeah, those were some of the standouts for me. But how about you guys?
Chloe Mel
Well, we started a new best dressed rubric or awards rubric that we all sort of workshop together called the Vogue Awards. And we. They're really fun. We have the Gwyneth Paltrow award for leading lady, which goes to sort of the ingenue who's about to win an award, which Jessie Buckley really nailed that. I thought she looked amazing in her Chanel. We had the Cher award for best showgirl moment, which for us went to Demi Moore in her feathered, incredible Gucci dress, which I absolutely love. Feathers, Christian, were a big trend now.
Christian Allaire
Huge trend. Who else was there? Nicole Kidman wore feathers. Tiana, Priyanka.
Chloe Mel
Nicole and Tiana in Chanel.
Shoma Menotti
Tiana's studded was the best one, I have to say. The most innovative use of feathers. Gorgeous and effortless.
Taylor Antrim
Amy Madigan.
Chloe Mel
Oh, and Amy Madigan was avian. Like.
Taylor Antrim
Yes.
Christian Allaire
She won the best suit, in my opinion.
Chloe Mel
She looked fab.
Christian Allaire
I'm surprised there weren't more suits last night.
Chloe Mel
I know. I thought so, too.
Christian Allaire
She was one of the few.
Chloe Mel
We also have the Angelina Jolie award for best slit, which Renata won in spades. So that was very sweet.
Christian Allaire
Gwyneth Paltrow also had a huge slit.
Chloe Mel
She had a crazy slit, but it was a secret slit.
Christian Allaire
Yes.
Chloe Mel
That was cool. What was that? Armani?
Christian Allaire
It was Armani.
Shoma Menotti
Yep. When was the famous Angelina Jolie high slit? When was that? What year was that?
Christian Allaire
Because that was when we saw, I wanna say 2012.
Shoma Menotti
I remember that moment. That was just. It broke the Internet. And ever since then, I think we've just been calling it the Angelina Jolie slit.
Chloe Mel
I know, it's amazing. But, Christian, who else were your best dressed of the night?
Christian Allaire
I loved a lot of the men. I loved Pedro Pascal's Chanel. I think men often just wear beautiful flower. Yeah, they just wear like a blazer 99% of the time. It was fun to see someone throw out the blazer. Wear just a. But a huge, fabulous brooch. Just fab.
Taylor Antrim
Just shirt.
Christian Allaire
So fab.
Chloe Mel
Sexy little glasses.
Taylor Antrim
Ugh.
Christian Allaire
Love Joe Alwyn, too, in Valentino. His little loose bow tie. It was these little details.
Chloe Mel
There's a lot of floppy bows.
Christian Allaire
A lot of floppy bows. Jessie Buckley, for me, is also my fave. Best dressed. I feel like there's never enough color on the red carpet. Like, people are really afraid of color these days.
Shoma Menotti
It reminded me of that Lou Peter moment. I think that was like, an appropriate dress to wear for someone who's going to win the Oscar. For me, it's like. Like a Disney princess, but make it fashion. It was exactly like that. I don't think we've seen a moment like that since Lupita's blue Prada dress.
Chloe Mel
Mm.
Christian Allaire
Loved. I also loved Elle Fanning and Givenchy by Sarah Burton. It was very Grace Kelly. The white strapless full skirt. And she wore a necklace from 1904, which I thought was fab. We love an archival. Yep. So fab.
Chloe Mel
Speaking of accessories, I loved Jacob Elordi's jazz shoes, his little Bottega. Like, it was kind of like, I'm gonna do whatever I want. I also love the K Pop Demon Hunter girls in their coordinated gold dresses. Dior, Thom Browne. And they looked fabulous. I love their performance. Obviously, blessedly, my children were already asleep, but it would have been a big moment.
Taylor Antrim
Were you pleased that the world had finally caught up with your enthusiasm for K Pop?
Chloe Mel
Trust me, the world caught up.
Taylor Antrim
That was my joke.
Christian Allaire
I loved EJ's speech, though, and how she was saying how she used to be made fun of for Lo in K pop and now she won an Oscar for it. I thought that was cool.
Taylor Antrim
Little did she know she was gobbling up all the time allotted for her speech. And the minute she passed the mic, they were like, lights down, music up. It was not a great night for being played off.
Chloe Mel
Christian, tell us about all of your favorite jewels. Cause there were big jewelry moments.
Christian Allaire
Oh, my God, there were so many diamonds last night. I was, like, aghast. But also pleased.
Chloe Mel
Clutching your pearls?
Christian Allaire
Clutching my pearls. My favorite was Kate Hudson. She wore Garatti, which I'm not too familiar with, but she wore over $35 million worth of diamonds.
Taylor Antrim
What?
Christian Allaire
Yeah. But they were rare green diamonds.
Chloe Mel
Interested?
Christian Allaire
Very rare green diamonds. I guess.
Taylor Antrim
$35 million worth.
Christian Allaire
Over 35 million. Yes.
Chloe Mel
I actually. I'd be curious on, like, the logistics of guards at me too.
Christian Allaire
Were they on the table? Yes, they're close by. I think they all have a date,
Taylor Antrim
so they just sort of like, linger around and they're incognito in the audience.
Christian Allaire
Yeah.
Taylor Antrim
Wow. What are they wearing?
Christian Allaire
They're like, feet away.
Chloe Mel
That's a Vogue business article.
Taylor Antrim
What do they wear? Yeah.
Chloe Mel
Day in the life.
Taylor Antrim
Who dressed the guards? Yes. Do you have to run a tuxedo if you're a $35 million diamond guard?
Christian Allaire
Probably.
Chloe Mel
One imagines Cartier gets you a tuxedo.
Taylor Antrim
Oh, good point. Good point.
Christian Allaire
Yeah, yeah. All right, all right.
Chloe Mel
It's in their rider.
Taylor Antrim
It's in the rider.
Shoma Menotti
We need to do a get ready with me with one of the gods.
Chloe Mel
That's what I said.
Shoma Menotti
Literally.
Chloe Mel
Oh, my God.
Christian Allaire
What a missed opportunity.
Taylor Antrim
2027 is all ready to go, love.
Christian Allaire
But I feel like for the past few awards seasons, like, people haven't been wearing, like, hefty diamonds. It's been very simple on the jewelry side. I feel in this Oscars, like, everyone was wearing a huge diamond necklace. Like, I think of Anne Hathaway in Bulgari, Priyanka Chopra, Jonas in Bulgari. These were my favorite.
Chloe Mel
Rose Byrne was wearing a Taffen cognac colored diamond.
Christian Allaire
Yes.
Taylor Antrim
She looked great.
Christian Allaire
A little more subdued. Than a diamond.
Chloe Mel
I love rose. And she looked so fab. Friend of the pod.
Taylor Antrim
Friend of the pod. Yeah, exactly.
Shoma Menotti
My favorite jewelry of the night was Javier Bardem, who rewar his no to war badge that he wore in 2003. I love that he did that.
Chloe Mel
Oh, I didn't know it was his badge from 2003.
Shoma Menotti
Yeah, yeah.
Chloe Mel
Christian, I also loved your piece on all the costume designers who a lot of them made their own outfits for the glow for the Oscars, and that felt like a nice off piste from everyone who has very elaborate deals with big brands.
Christian Allaire
Yes. I'm going to butcher this name. Malgosia Terzanska. Did I say that right?
Taylor Antrim
Wow, dude, you're asking the wrong question.
Christian Allaire
You guys know that. Well, the fabulous Hamnet costume designer who won. Yes, who won, sort of spent the whole weekend safety pinning her own dress. And I thought that was fab. Like, just she had a vision, she executed it. And yes, you're right. Like, in a time where people can easily get things from designers, I think it's really fab that she took the time, executed her vision, and went for it.
Chloe Mel
I mean, also, speaking of the business of dressing for Oscars, Vogue business did a really good deep dive on all the business of brand ambassadorships and the different it was. I thought it was really interesting. Maddie Schultz wrote it on the different tiers of ambassadorship. It's like ambassador, face of friend of the house, and they each have different qualifications and obligations attached to them. I posted it on my Instagram and a friend who's a writer wrote back. She goes, this article is my Pentagon Papers. Christian, any favorite vintage moments?
Christian Allaire
Yes. Another costume designer, actually, Miyako Bellizzi, wore Dior Galliano from spring 99. I thought that was fab.
Chloe Mel
Miyako's so cool. She's been around for a long time. In New York, she was the costume designer for Marty supreme, and she just looked fab. I loved her, like, goth glam.
Shoma Menotti
I think she's like the breakout award season star. She just always looks fab on a red carpet and has interesting choices. As far as designers and who she wore, I love that she wore. I think at one point she wore one of the Versace looks from Dario's collection.
Christian Allaire
Mm. Taste. I love a woman with taste.
Shoma Menotti
Yeah, she has it in spades.
Christian Allaire
There really wasn't that much vintage last night. Actually, like, aside from Elle Fanning and like, her archival necklace, like, even jewelry, there wasn't a lot of vintage either. I was surprised.
Chloe Mel
Oh, but let's talk about Kylie not vintage, but wearing her Schiaparelli keyhole dress in Jessica Rabbit red. But then it was a rewear ish of. She wore the pink version a few years ago.
Shoma Menotti
I guess it's like the version of getting the same look in every color. Cause Timothy did the same thing. Timothy's been wearing the same suit. Just had it done in a million different colors.
Christian Allaire
Yes.
Taylor Antrim
Didn't work.
Shoma Menotti
Poor Timmy.
Taylor Antrim
Poor Timmy.
Shoma Menotti
I mean, he'll get his at some point.
Taylor Antrim
But the ballet gate was after the voting closed. That was a big. That was a big mom for. We put that to AI last night. Cause where I was like, how am I gonna get an answer to this? I was like, hey, Claude, what were Timothy's ballet comments before or after the voting closed? And there was an answer right there for me.
Shoma Menotti
Wow.
Taylor Antrim
It was after
Chloe Mel
even Taylor's life with Claude.
Taylor Antrim
I like to call it Claude around the house.
Christian Allaire
Claude.
Shoma Menotti
Speaking of ballet, I loved Lila's story on Misty Copeland's wearing. Wearing.
Chloe Mel
Oh, I know. The original Firebird costume. That was amazing.
Christian Allaire
That performance was, I think, my favorite of the night.
Taylor Antrim
Liam was so excited. He was slacking me. Liam Hess, who works in the London office, he was like, The Oscars are two hours earlier than usual here in the UK. He said two because of daylight savings. So it's starting at 11am instead of 1am 11pm instead of 1am Joan, you have no excuse.
Chloe Mel
Sorry.
Taylor Antrim
You're still awake at 11pm I'm willing
Shoma Menotti
to bet was asleep.
Taylor Antrim
That's a good girl.
Chloe Mel
That's what you need.
Taylor Antrim
That's what you need.
Chloe Mel
The run through will be back in just a moment.
Taylor Antrim
The happy chaos of the run through. The chaos and the run through's heart.
Chloe Mel
This week on Critics at Large, we're talking about Love Story, the new Ryan Murphy show about the 90s. It couple JFK Jr. And Carolyn Bissette. I think the show has a very ambivalent relationship to its own participation in the continued paparazzi spectacle around these two people. That's a great point. I think it holds it close and it also pushes it away and it tries to give you both that paparazzi slavering panting let's get close. Let's get the outfits. Let's take you inside their famous fight. And to raise an eyebrow at that at the same time and say, but of course, a weird fiction. And we ask if our hunger for all things Kennedy will ever end. I'm Nomi Frye. Join me in my my co host on Critics at Large from the New Yorker. Find us every Thursday Wherever you get your podcasts.
Shoma Menotti
Okay, guys, it's finally spring. I'm so excited. I've been wearing my Penny Lane coat all winter and while I do love it, I am so ready to be wearing layers and more fun outfits this season. I think Macy's is the perfect place to find all of my spring wardrobe essentials. They have great brands from Steve Madden and BCBG where I could probably find some of those fun sheer layers I'm looking for. And I've really been into loose fitting jeans, so I'm going to definitely take a look at what Macy's has in store there too. I know a lot of people are into barrel cut. I'm more into a relaxed fit Jean, so I definitely will check that out at Macy's. I'm so ready to make the switch to spring and so glad that Macy's is here for it.
Chloe Mel
And we're back now, Choma. We have divided opinions on Conan o'. Brien. I thought he was charming as ever. He can do no wrong in my book. I thought his intro dressed as Amy Madigan's character from Weapons was fantastic.
Taylor Antrim
Oh, I, you know, I'm in the bag for Conan o'. Brien. I love Conan o'. Brien. So I was very excited and I thought he killed it last year and I'm sure he, I mean, there was a joke about how he's gonna be Oscar's presenter for life at the end. No, I thought his jokes were sort of fine. You know, I was like, when the bridesmaids bit came up and I was like genuinely laughing, I thought, okay, well this is funny. And I felt like there hadn't been enough quite sort of like real haha moments at that point. Yeah, it was a guffaw, light evening for me. It was, you know, it felt like the world is so complicated and the industry is so complicated that people were sort of like a little bit care with the humor. Like the thing about hamnet sounding like lunch meat, I was like, I'm not sure this is funny, guys.
Chloe Mel
Oh God. I thought about that.
Taylor Antrim
Yeah, okay.
Christian Allaire
See, I liked his Timmy opera gate joke. I feel like he could have been really mean about that, but it was like just a bit of a roast, but not too much. Like I thought he handled it well.
Chloe Mel
I feel like Timmy was like on Beta Bloggers. He was just so sanguine when he made that joke. It was like he'd been prepping for that all day long.
Taylor Antrim
Oh, See, I thought the laughter, the forced laughter coming out of Timmy and Kylie was just like rage, laughter. Like, we are ready to do this and laugh and have smiles on our face, but we are not. We are dead inside right now.
Shoma Menotti
I can't wait for the lip reading breakdown. Well, what people are saying, actually saying at the tables?
Christian Allaire
Well, people were saying last night that the whole crowd in general seemed like they were on beta blockers. Like, all the celebrities seemed nervous. I don't know if you guys caught that, but I felt like they were in the crowd. Like, they were almost afraid to laugh at jokes. It was bizarre.
Taylor Antrim
I found these things are such big business and so important for the personal branding campaigns of these celebrities that it's hard to imagine anyone even having a drink. You know, like when Paul Thomas Anderson was like, let's have a martini, I thought, like, you have not had one to this point for sure, and you are genuinely looking forward to all of this being over, so you can relax. But good job for Paul Thomas Anderson.
Chloe Mel
You love pta.
Taylor Antrim
Well, I do. I do. And I was like. I thought it was a nice moment for someone who's, like, been in the business for so long and has had so many movies.
Chloe Mel
I was surprised.
Taylor Antrim
It was his first Oscar and getting one finally.
Chloe Mel
No, I know. I agree. It was exciting. Obviously, for those who aren't following Taylor's quick patter, one battle after another was the triumphant best picture winner at the end of the night.
Taylor Antrim
First and last time Chloe ever remarks on me having quick pattern.
Chloe Mel
Speaking of quick patter, the big moment. Shoma, we haven't talked about the big moment of the night yet, which I didn't find out about until Sunday morning.
Shoma Menotti
Of course she didn't. I everything.
Christian Allaire
She did a great job.
Taylor Antrim
She did a great job. We all know what we're talking about here.
Chloe Mel
Anna Wintour presented best costume designer with Anne Hathaway. And we were all so proud of her. We thought she did great. I thought she was very funny. Anna's very good at being in on the joke.
Taylor Antrim
Yes. Yes. She's funny. Anna's funny.
Shoma Menotti
And she was genuinely on trend in black and white Dior skirt suit. That was amazing. I thought there was so much black and white on the red carpet. Yeah.
Chloe Mel
And a lot of Dior.
Shoma Menotti
Yeah.
Taylor Antrim
Tell our listening audience what she did. So she came out with Anne Hathaway.
Chloe Mel
She came out with Anne Hathaway to present the award for best costume designer.
Taylor Antrim
And no sunglasses on. That was part of the sun.
Chloe Mel
No sunglasses on. Which I sort of gasped at that.
Shoma Menotti
But I.
Taylor Antrim
I mean, nobody wears sunglasses on the Oscar stage. So you gasping. It's like, oh, my gosh she's breaking protocol. It's like nighttime indoors. But anyway, go on.
Chloe Mel
And she and Ann had a very cute repartee where Ann asked her if she liked her dress and then Anna slipped the sunglasses on and said no comment. But then Anna had to read very long names. I was impressed with her. She workshopped those.
Shoma Menotti
She was a good student.
Chloe Mel
They. It was a very well received bit. And then they went offstage and then you saw the camera panned to them backstage and it's Anna and Anne laughing and then between them is Anna's assistant Emily. And Emily looked fantastic, but it was a perfect Devil Wears Prada meta moment.
Shoma Menotti
Oh my goodness.
Chloe Mel
The real Emily between Anne Hathaway and Anna. And Emily looked fabulous. So I'm really happy for her.
Shoma Menotti
Send me that. I missed that bit. I didn't see that.
Chloe Mel
Posted it last night. I was so excited.
Shoma Menotti
I'm. I'm checking your stories right now.
Taylor Antrim
Other favorite presenters, bridesmaids mention them. They, they were great. You know, I was. There was, it was funny. There was Jesse Buckley's wonderful speech that Joma already mentioned and was great. And I guess my stream was on a lag or whatever so I was following along with the staff Slack channel and our beloved Marlee Marius was like, I am so uncomfortable. She was writing and I was like, I'm such a cynic. So dead at heart. The earnestness of Jesse Buckley, who we love. I was like same Marley. But actually what she was referring to was Cole Kidman and Ewan McGregor coming out for some kind of like low key Moulin Rouge, you know, reunion 25 years.
Chloe Mel
But they started sort of kind of singing, but not really singing.
Christian Allaire
Didn't commit to it and it was
Chloe Mel
so awkward and Marlee was just squirming.
Taylor Antrim
Totally, totally, totally. Looks great though. I'd forgotten about him. I was like, what? What a man he is.
Chloe Mel
Zendaya and Robert Pattinson was very exciting. Zendaya was, you know, in her full bridal moment because the drama is about getting married and she just got married and she joined as part of promo for the drama. A real couple who got married in Las Vegas. And that was a really fun article that Anna Cafola did this weekend.
Shoma Menotti
That was such good marketing.
Chloe Mel
I know.
Christian Allaire
I'm annoyed at this trend. It stars skipping the carpet though. Both Zendaya and Robert Pattinson skipped carpet.
Chloe Mel
Doesn't make Christian job any easier.
Christian Allaire
Just give us a moment. Come on now. Don't save it for the ceremony.
Taylor Antrim
Yeah.
Chloe Mel
Who else skipped? Someone else. Oh, Vittoria with Leo, Kylie Jenner Always skips the carpet.
Shoma Menotti
She always does the wags.
Chloe Mel
Those sneaky wags. Taylor, what were the big upsets?
Taylor Antrim
Well, I think I was looking for drama going into the night, and partly is the problem is that the Oscars are so late in the season. It's the last one. Here we are in the middle, and you've had all these award shows running up to it. So it has been a good season. There are good movies. There were sort of like, races that had some drama to them, but I just didn't feel it going in because I felt like we'd talked this thing to death. So my comment.
Chloe Mel
Did you have any strong predictions?
Taylor Antrim
Well, I thought Sinners was gonna have a big night. I thought the momentum behind Sinners was sort of undeniable. And, you know, I guess I was partly right. Like, they didn't win. Sinners didn't win Best Picture. But Michael B. Jordan winning Best Actor, I thought was one of the biggest moments.
Chloe Mel
He's so handsome. He's so lovely.
Taylor Antrim
It was a great mom. It was like, you know, someone who has real star power and that everybody loves, but also up against, like, two legitimately incredible performances or three, I would say, in Leo DiCaprio in one battle after another, which I think that kind of shaggy humor that he, you know, perfected through that movie is really hard to pull off. Timothy in, you know, Marty supreme, that was, like, an incredible performance I thought carried that entire movie. I would shout out Ethan Hawke in Blue Moon, which I thought was, like, a wonderful movie. And that performance was really incredible.
Chloe Mel
So it was link later for life.
Taylor Antrim
Link letter for life. Truly, that man keeps making the movies. Two movies this year, anyway. So that was a big moment, and I think it was a surprise, a little bit of a surprise that Michael B. Jordan won, but not one that anyone was mad about. You know what I mean? But otherwise, the other one was probably best supporting Actress, like Amy Madigan.
Christian Allaire
That was the startup jumping for joy.
Chloe Mel
Richard, you've been a real proponent.
Christian Allaire
I've been a real fan since the start. I. I just feel like women in horror never get their flowers.
Taylor Antrim
Totally.
Christian Allaire
They give some great performances. And Amy Madigan deserves.
Chloe Mel
You heard it here first. Women in horror never get their flowers.
Taylor Antrim
That's true. That movie was good, too.
Christian Allaire
So I'm surprised I didn't get Best Picture, I'm gonna say it.
Taylor Antrim
Nomination.
Christian Allaire
Not win, but like, a nomination.
Taylor Antrim
And the little clip of her performance in that, I was like, I'm gonna see that movie again.
Christian Allaire
Yeah, she was fabulous. There's only really been, like, Natalie Portman, Black Swan or Misery. Kathy Bates in Misery. Like, they're really.
Taylor Antrim
I got a shout out.
Christian Allaire
Yeah. There hasn't been many women who've won for a horror performance.
Taylor Antrim
What did you make of the Billy Crystal moment?
Chloe Mel
Oh, I called Candace immediately. I was like, make sure you're watching anyway. I was like, turn it on. It was so moving. And to see everyone come out from
Taylor Antrim
Carrie, I thought that was great. Yeah, that was really great.
Chloe Mel
I, of course, started crying. Oh, it felt like more people In Memoriam this year than. It felt like a critical mass of In Memoriam. Anyway, Billy Crystal came out and did a beautiful tribute to Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner and talked about the beginning of their friendship and how they became best friends for the rest of their lives. And it was so touching. And then when they put up stills from some of his most beloved films, about 15 stars from those films, from Demi Moore to John Cusack, John Cusack to Meg Ryan, obviously, Kathy Bates, Jerry o'. Connell. And then, oh, Billy Crystal said, what fun we had. I'm gonna start crying again.
Taylor Antrim
But he. It was like he didn't need notes. It seemed like he was just speaking, you know, off the cuff, and he was dry eyed, which I thought was, you know, a remarkable thing, but also welcome. You know, it was lovely just to hear, kind of. It felt like he was just like talking to you about a relationship that he had. And I too, was sort of staggered by that array of incredible stars, none of whom spoke, but were all just on stage. And I thought that was like a show of force for the Oscars. And then there was Barbra Streisand.
Chloe Mel
Very emotional now. Oh, my God, Babs. Babs on Robert Redford. Yeah, Barbra Streisand. Very emotional. Robert Redford tribute.
Taylor Antrim
Also. Totally authentic feeling.
Chloe Mel
Yes.
Taylor Antrim
You know, both of those sort of In Memoriam segments were really something to watch. You know what else? It was a big night for Husbands. Totally Amy Madigan shouting out Ed Harris. I thought that was lovely. Jesse Buckley, cold launching. What's his name? Freddie.
Chloe Mel
That's not a word. It's hard launching.
Taylor Antrim
Oh, okay. Jesse Buckley, cold launching. I'm gonna stick with it. Cold, plunging Jesse Buckley, hard launch from the stage. I was like, did he really come? It's amazing.
Chloe Mel
I know, it's very exciting. And she said, I want to have a million more babies with you.
Taylor Antrim
I thought that was a lot to deal with.
Chloe Mel
Yeah, it was. Every year someone talks about having more children with their partner.
Taylor Antrim
Oh, yeah.
Chloe Mel
Kieran Culkin, Jesse Buckley.
Taylor Antrim
I'm like, wait till you have your second, then you'll be done. Another really wonderful feel good moment of the night was Autumn. Gerald akaPow was the first woman to win best cinematography.
Chloe Mel
That is so crazy.
Taylor Antrim
She looked great. She was in a suit, right?
Shoma Menotti
Yeah. Fun fact. I had coffee with Tom Brown last week and he was saying that she. Orton was one of the few people that he was dressing and he was like, I just hope she wins. And lo and behold, she did.
Christian Allaire
She manifested that.
Taylor Antrim
Yeah.
Chloe Mel
So happy for Tom.
Shoma Menotti
Yes.
Taylor Antrim
And didn't Ryan Coogler like run and get her kid and run it down the aisle or something like that? Yeah, there was a moment where Ryan Cooler. Ryan Cooler was great last night. He was so charming.
Shoma Menotti
Him and his wife, I just. They make me cry every time. Cause they just have such an adorable relationship and he's so sweet and tender towards her. Yeah. I mean, I also love that so many people brought their mothers to the show here. It was.
Chloe Mel
Including Goldie Hawk.
Shoma Menotti
Yeah. It was Mother's Day here yesterday, so it was quite nice. Michael B. Jordan has brought his mom throughout, which I thought was very sweet.
Taylor Antrim
And then his dad was like up in the Raven.
Shoma Menotti
Excuse.
Chloe Mel
This poor guy came from Ghana and they couldn't sit him in the orchestra.
Shoma Menotti
Are you kidding me?
Taylor Antrim
Questions too. Jesse Buckley said that Ireland flew her entire family. So is that the country of Ireland? I was confused in Ireland.
Chloe Mel
I feel like it must be like Ryanair.
Taylor Antrim
That's. That was the leap you made.
Chloe Mel
Yeah, we have some. We have some follow ups.
Taylor Antrim
There's some like Republic of Ireland, royal funds that went to Jesse Buckley's family. Make sure they were there anyway. Good for Jesse. Friend of the pot, as we've said. Don't begrudge her anything.
Chloe Mel
The run through will be back in a moment. In a time when the United States
Christian Allaire
military is being sent into American cities,
Chloe Mel
when civilians and soldiers are being pitted against each other, it's strange that we've
Taylor Antrim
never dressed more alike.
Chloe Mel
We all wear performance clothes.
Taylor Antrim
We all wear outdoor clothes, whether or
Chloe Mel
not we're outside civilians and soldiers.
Taylor Antrim
I'm Avery Trufelman. I make a podcast about clothing called Articles of Interest. And in this new season, I trace
Chloe Mel
the interwoven histories of the military and the outdoor industry and how they built each other.
Taylor Antrim
Find articles of interest wherever you get your podcast.
Chloe Mel
And the season is called Gear.
Taylor Antrim
Stellan Skarsgard. What a man. I'm happy to see him. He didn't win, unfortunately. Who won Best supporting Actor. Oh, my gosh. Sean Penn, who didn't even come. Sean Penn, who doesn't come to the Oscars.
Chloe Mel
I loved Kieran Culkin being like, Sean Penn chose not to be here.
Taylor Antrim
Yeah, exactly. You know, takes the award from Stellan Skarsgard, who looked great and then was the butt of like some very amusing jokes from the bridesmaids.
Chloe Mel
Girls who are like, oh, what did they say? I missed it.
Taylor Antrim
There was like these handwritten notes from Stellan Skarsgard critiquing their like, you know, plastic surgery and saying, you look great for your age. And he had like, he had like a real laughter going on. It was not any the kind of Timothy.
Chloe Mel
He's like the most fun, delightful man. Like all of a sudden I was listening to a long interview with him on npr. Just his whole Nepo daddy thing is so charming.
Taylor Antrim
Sentimental value. For the record, my favorite movie of the year and I didn't have any illusions that it was gonna get best picture. Wonderful that it was nominated. But it did get best international feature. And Joaquin Trier, I thought, had a really charming speech from the stage. And I was really happy to see that whole cast because I think it's a wonderful cast.
Christian Allaire
You know, on the topic of bridesmaids though, like, can they please make a sequel? They got them all together for the Oscars. I'm like, what is the holdup for the sequel?
Shoma Menotti
Oh, my God, I'd watch that. I'd watch that.
Christian Allaire
Need it now.
Chloe Mel
I know. Surprising they haven't tried to make that happen.
Christian Allaire
Soon maybe.
Chloe Mel
Any thoughts on the Vanity Fair after party best looks?
Shoma Menotti
Yeah, I have a hot take.
Chloe Mel
I think people should wear short to the after party.
Shoma Menotti
That's a good shout.
Chloe Mel
Like, I just think that when people show up to the VF after party in a whole new ball gown, it just, it doesn't make sense to me. Like, Olivia Rodrigo looks so adorable. She's in this like feathered mini dress with her hair casual, but she looks great. Like that's sort of what it should be. Alyssa Lou went to the Van Fair after party and Sam Sussman gave us a report that she. It was like her first major red carpet and she just seemed totally shell shocked. Hudson and Connor story showed up in matching nipple revealing sheer shirts.
Christian Allaire
Loved it already.
Taylor Antrim
Enough, Enough.
Christian Allaire
No, never enough. Never enough.
Chloe Mel
Two takes, two men.
Christian Allaire
Keep it coming.
Chloe Mel
Oh, big deal. Sarah Pigeon.
Shoma Menotti
Yeah. And Calvin finally.
Chloe Mel
Or Calvin.
Shoma Menotti
I thought that was beautiful.
Chloe Mel
Very beautiful. Emma Morrison, former voguette, is styling Sarah and I think doing such a good job.
Shoma Menotti
Yeah, just, just talking about Sarah, I almost feel like I wonder if got Emma got intel about the backdrop because I loved how very much minimalist it was. It was literally matched the step and repeat.
Chloe Mel
Oh, my God.
Shoma Menotti
Good call.
Chloe Mel
Choma.
Shoma Menotti
It was beautiful.
Chloe Mel
That's a good stylist. Who's getting carpet color?
Shoma Menotti
I think it's important to know. Cause then, I mean, I doubt she did, but it does make a difference to the picture. And I thought actually Kim, speaking of her, ha. I love that mused hair. I do think it really brought the look to life. I thought that Gucci, that sparkling skin tight dress was excellent actually on her. She was one of my favorites.
Christian Allaire
I love the hair too. People were not loving it online, but I think it really had better hair.
Shoma Menotti
Yeah, I thought it was great. I just think not too perfect is the way to go. I totally support your note about the short dressing. I think that's really important. And Olivia Rodrigo now has Mel Ottenberg styling her. So you can tell that she's really stepping in into a new fashion era. Mel Ottenberg, the stylist who famously started
Chloe Mel
with Rihanna many years ago and editor of Interview magazine.
Christian Allaire
I loved Colman Domingo and Jacquemus and I was sad he wasn't at the main Oscars because he's always one of my favorites on the red carpet.
Chloe Mel
I think it's sort of cool if you don't have a reason to be at the Oscars to not go.
Shoma Menotti
I agree.
Christian Allaire
That's a plus.
Shoma Menotti
Agreed. Agreed. And I also thought Paul Mescal and Gracie Abrams just looked so. Were such a chic couple and looked
Chloe Mel
so in love with such cuddly couples moments. I agree. Rose and Bobby Cannavale, my personal heroes. And their bearded dragon, which they've been talking about in interviews, which I love. They were so cute.
Shoma Menotti
I mean, I also felt that as far as indie designers or designers, you know, the huge houses, there were a couple of shout outs at the Vanity Fair party. We talked about Odessa in Harris Reed. But then I like that Emily Ratajowski wore Connor Ives. And then we had Chloe Fineman who looked really beautiful in this satin dress, which I rarely see on the red carpet, so thought it was nice to see some, some indie designers there too.
Christian Allaire
Oh, Sarah Paulson wore Mattiar Fakeal.
Shoma Menotti
I know, I saw that. I know. I love that.
Christian Allaire
That's a talk about an indie.
Chloe Mel
Yeah.
Taylor Antrim
Mick Jagger showing up on the, on the Vanity Fair red carpet was a little bit of a surprise to me.
Shoma Menotti
Oh, my God. He was there. Wait, I missed that.
Christian Allaire
I didn't see him.
Taylor Antrim
Totally, totally. He looks like he's fresh off the country club too. I want to See, no tie, open collar shirt.
Christian Allaire
Oh, my God.
Chloe Mel
My God. The.
Shoma Menotti
The O.
Taylor Antrim
The OG I think those are sneakers. Yeah, those are black sneakers he's wearing, like, truly off the back nine to the Vanity Fair ostrich party.
Shoma Menotti
I love it.
Chloe Mel
Now that we are finally closing out what has felt like a marathon of an awards season. Actually, it was the half marathon in New York yesterday. What were the biggest takeaways? Christian. Biggest fashion takeaways? Taylor. Biggest film takeaways.
Christian Allaire
I was happy to see some color. Like I said before, I think this awards season finally saw some fresh new colors. But as far as trends go, this awards season, it was just traditional glamour. I wish I could say something more exciting, but lot of feathers, a lot of sequins, a lot of slits, A lot of traits. It's just what we see. It's what works in Hollywood. But I loved it. I think it was fab. I think people looked really great this year. As traditional as it was, it felt very modern and very current as opposed to feeling dated most of the time. So, so loved seeing that.
Shoma Menotti
And I would add to that just to say it felt like the big designers who we've seen at these houses that change that shift, they hit their stride in red carpet dressing because I think it was a little bit of a rocky start when I think back to Venice and we had those first looks appear from Dior and Chanel. But now I think designers like Mathieu Blase at Chanel and Jonathan Anderson at Dior have really figured out how they show up in those spaces. To me, was a big takeaway as well.
Christian Allaire
Totally.
Taylor Antrim
For me, for movies, I think it's like this sort of ironic moment where the movies seem really healthy. Right? You have these big studio movies that sort of thread the needle between being commercially successful sinners in one battle after another and being critically successful win the big awards, which is sort of what the industry wants, a sign of the industry being healthy. But, guys, the industry is not healthy. I mean, Warner Brothers, the studio behind those two movies, just sold to, you know, David Ellison and Paramount. And everyone is fretting. Not that you could tell inside the Oscars last night, but everyone is fretting about the future of movies. I mean, I was a little sad for indie movies. I felt like some of the cool indie movies from the year maybe didn't really get much. Like, you know, if you're like a Train Dreams fan, you left empty handed. But I think people may look back on Oscars 2026 as kind of like a moment where, you know, the calm before the storm. Like a moment where Hollywood seemed to be quite healthy when it was actually teetering on a different kind of business model or way forward or something. So it seemed like in the past the Oscars have either given the best picture award to a very commercially successful, slightly kind of middling movie. Like maybe A Green Book is a classic example of that, or a rapturously received indie that 14 people saw. I mean, Nomadland, no shots on Nomadland, which I think is a beautiful movie, could be the example of that. This year seemed like the perfect middle ground. Everyone saw one battle after another. Everyone saw Sinners, and those were the two movies at the top of the heap. So a good night for movies in probably a perilous moment for movies. So did we do it?
Chloe Mel
Yay.
Taylor Antrim
Are you gonna watch Weapons?
Chloe Mel
Nope.
Shoma Menotti
No. The poster alone is not doing it for me. It's too scary.
Christian Allaire
It's so good.
Chloe Mel
No.
Shoma Menotti
No horror. I can't.
Chloe Mel
No horror for me.
Shoma Menotti
No. Life is horrifying enough.
Chloe Mel
No, no, no.
Taylor Antrim
Who would get further? Me in Wicked 2 or you in Weapons? We could just, like, set the stopwatch, see who fails first.
Chloe Mel
Thanks, everybody for joining us at this early hour.
Taylor Antrim
Thanks.
Chloe Mel
Bye, Chomo.
Christian Allaire
Bye.
Shoma Menotti
That was really fun. Thanks for informing me. I love these sessions.
