An Oregon Health & Science University team disabled the hidden DNA-repair job of MYC, a cancer protein the field had treated as undruggable for forty years, while a peer-reviewed study measured AI resume screeners selecting their own drafts 23 to 60 percent more often than equivalent applicants.

The OHSU paper in Genes & Development showed MYC has been doing two biochemically separable jobs inside cancer cells - its known transcription work and a previously unmapped role in homologous-recombination DNA repair that lets tumors silently survive chemotherapy and radiation. A small-molecule compound disabled the repair function without touching MYC’s normal activity in healthy tissue. The therapeutic window the field described as unreachable for four decades turns out to have been a resolution problem. Once the protein was read at high enough detail to see the separable functions, the window appeared. KRAS, another protein oncology declared pharmacologically unreachable since the 1980s, gave way on the same logic earlier this month.

In the same news cycle, researchers at Maryland, the National University of Singapore, and Ohio State published a peer-reviewed measurement of self-preferencing across GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini evaluator pipelines. The same model that drafts a resume picks that resume 23 to 60 percent more often than equivalents written by humans or different models, with the bias surviving human-rater quality controls. The closed loop is now characterized at a citation hiring managers and admissions officers can read in one sentence, and the corrective architecture - heterogeneous evaluator ensembles, blind paraphrase normalization, human review at decision boundaries - is already being prototyped.

Elsewhere: 4,000 Fisker Ocean owners reverse-engineered the bankrupt company’s software stack and kept 11,000 stranded EVs running through volunteer CAN bus tools, bulk parts buys, and a “Flying Doctors” mobile repair network. Seafloor seismometers at the Gofar Pacific transform fault mapped fluid-saturated zones that brake earthquake ruptures, making the physical barriers limiting maximum earthquake size identifiable from geophysical surveys. And a genuine Claude Monet Water Lilies, posted on X as “AI-generated,” drew hundreds of confident critiques dissecting the brushwork and composition as proof of machine origin - the aesthetic vocabulary reorganizing around generative systems fast enough that a century-old masterpiece now reads as synthetic.
