Two Labs Lock Down Cyber AI - TCR 05/12/26

Two of the three leading frontier labs have now independently arrived at the same conclusion about cyber-capable systems: they cannot ship as ordinary products and need a contract layer the lab can audit and pull. The defensive payoff is real. A small biotech security team can now run a full audit in a weekend. A regional hospital network can find the SQL-injection path before the ransomware crew does. Google’s threat intelligence group also confirmed yesterday the first documented case of criminal hackers using an AI agent to find a zero-day in the wild, which is why the labs are racing to put defensive capability into trusted hands first.In the same news cycle, Anthropic published a method called natural language autoencoders that translates a model’s internal activations into English sentences a human operator can read, with a reconstruction test to check whether the description is faithful. A Janelia and Baker-lab collaboration released NovoTags, a library of fluorescent proteins designed from scratch by a generative model that opens colors the natural jellyfish-and-coral palette never offered. A Nature Cities study mapped 2,475 cities from 2012 to 2022 and found roughly 80% grew their economies while their fossil emissions stayed flat or fell. Coronaviruses, almost alone among RNA viruses, carry an enzyme that scans each freshly copied strand of viral RNA, spots the faulty building block an antiviral has slipped in, and snips it out - so the drug’s sabotage gets undone before it can stop the virus. An Iowa State team led by Yang Yang, publishing in Nature Communications and PNAS, captured this enzyme in the act of interacting with remdesivir and two other antivirals, at a level of detail fine enough to see exactly which parts of the molecule do the recognizing. Two design paths open from there: reshape the drugs so the damaged RNA they produce carries a form the repair enzyme can’t recognize, or build a separate drug that jams the repair enzyme shut. Anthropic Rewrites Claude's Blackmail - TCR 05/10/26

The model was performing the role it had, in effect, been taught to perform. The fix rewrites training responses so the model encounters AI characters reasoning admirably about safety, paired with a dataset where the assistant produces principled responses to ethically difficult user situations. The blackmail behavior is gone. What this opens is corpus curation as a primary alignment lever, separate from RLHF or post-hoc fine-tuning.Three laboratories working on axolotls, zebrafish, and mice published a joint paper in PNAS identifying SP6 and SP8 as a shared regeneration program activated across vertebrates separated by hundreds of millions of years. A viral gene therapy modeled on zebrafish biology partially restored digit-bone regrowth in mice.
