An airplane is approaching a runway at night.

The airport may be miles away.

The ground is dark.

The horizon can be difficult to see.

And yet, the pilot can identify exactly where the runway begins, where it ends, and how the aircraft should line up for landing.

A huge part of that guidance comes from something surprisingly simple:

Lights.

But runway lighting systems are far more sophisticated than a row of lights along the pavement.
