Blood Part 4 Ah, welcome back, my friend. You've been out of it for a while now, but I'm glad to say that your vitals are stabilizing. I think you're going to pull through after all. I thought I told you that you wanted to leave. Yes, you've made that quite clear by now. But unfortunately, you are in no condition to walk out of here. Even if Becker and Sterns decided to allow it, which they definitely won't. What are you talking about? Let's go back a step, shall we? I think we've gotten off on the wrong foot. My name is Jonas. I'm part of the data grid restoration team here at Corova Station. In fact, I am the data grid restoration team. There's no one else here who has the skill set to do it. Is that supposed to impress me? No, I'm just trying to let you know a little about me. So it's your turn. Can you tell me who you are? Who I am is none of your business. Maybe you haven't figured this out yet, but you don't have much going for you at this point. You're weak. You have no allies here, no way of getting out. And even if you did escape, you're a long, long way from civilization. As far as you're concerned, there's nothing but cloudy skies as far as the eye can see. And as it turns out, I'm the one ray of sunshine in that bleak, unforgiving landscape. So perhaps you should think carefully about whatever it is you intend to say next. My name is Crichton. Crichton. That's good. Excellent. We're making progress. What is this? Corova Station.
Jonas
Some kind of prison?
Crichton
It's a research facility, at least in name. But for some of the people here, yes, it's also a prison. What kind of research? I'm not privy to everything that goes on, but I hear the screams, I see the bodies being wheeled out. There are nightmares within these walls, I'm sorry to say. Nightmares brought to life. You speak in riddles. You'll understand what I'm talking about in time. If you survive long enough, that is. I have no intention of staying here. Oh, don't bother trying to get up. I took some precautions after what happened last time. Precautions? You tried to escape, remember? Started walking toward the door, but you didn't quite make it. Hurt yourself when you fell too? You really need to take better care of yourself. I secured those chains myself. And I can assure you that you won't get out of them. I'm sorry, but it's for your own good. You'll regret this. You're not showing a whole lot of gratitude here, Crichton. Why should I be grateful? Because without me, you'd already be dead. Dr. Becker would have tossed you back in the ocean and let you sink like a lead anchor. Perhaps that would have been a better.
Jonas
Outcome for all of us.
Crichton
So who are you really, Crichton? The troller scrubbers who brought you in thought you must have fallen off a fishing boat. And an old time troller scrubber who succumbed meekly to the waves. But I can tell from the look of you that you're something else entirely. I come from a place far from here. And I'm no fisherman, I can tell you that. What happened to you? I have no intention of telling you that. What about Edana? Has the. Has there been news? No, there hasn't. But if you ever want to find out what happened to her, first you have to get back on your feet. And to do that, you're going to need my help. There was a fight. Adanna and myself were separated. My memory's hazy, but I remember the roar of a rifle falling. The sound of the ocean all around. And Then darkness. Yes, that makes sense. This metal body of yours has sustained significant damage. The gunshot wounds in your chest are quite deep. And why is it you think you can help, huh? Are you an expert in repairs such as these? No, not at all. I've never worked on a steel body like yours. But on the plus side, I do know tech, and I believe I have skills that can help. And lucky for you, there are some old components in the basement that, while not perfectly suited for our purposes, should be close enough. As long as I can gain access to the workshop on the upper levels, I should be able to modify the parts accordingly. With any luck, we'll get you back on your feet eventually. And then what? What is it you want from me, Jonas? Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Our first order of business is to make sure you make yourself useful around here. Dr. Becker won't tolerate freeloaders, not for a second. I came up with the idea of having you help out at the furnace. The temperature there can spike without warning. And your mental body. I know what it's like to be a slave. I won't return to that life again. I'm not seeking to turn you into a slave. Quite the opposite. But we have to take this one step at a time. Jonas, what's going on?
Rust
Stern's told me that you've been wasting.
Crichton
Hours on your little pet project here. Dr. Becker, it's fine. I've got everything under control. The patient is making good progress. I don't care about him.
Rust
Playing doctor isn't your job, Jonas.
Crichton
We had an agreement, remember? I can assure you that all of my duties have been taken care of, sir.
Rust
Oh, really? Because I distinctly remember giving you the task of rewiring the examination rooms on level 12.
Crichton
It's done, sir. I finished it this morning. You what? Rooms 1, 2 and 4 are complete. I was hoping to do the others as well, but I ran out of cabling materials. You assured me that we would be getting a new shipment, remember?
Rust
Yes, there's been a holdup.
Crichton
I'm still looking into it. So right now there's nothing more I can do. That's why I thought my time would be better spent here with Crichton. Crichton? The patient.
Rust
Oh, he has a name, does he? And why is he all chained up like that?
Crichton
Convulsions, sir. Quite violent ones too. I had no choice but to restrain him. Well, whatever.
Rust
Can't say I really care.
Crichton
Just make sure this little distraction doesn't.
Rust
Get in the way of your work, Jonas. You got that?
Crichton
Absolutely. Dr. Becker. He won't. Fine.
Rust
Then I'll leave you to it.
Crichton
That man has no respect. Respect for you, clearly. Why do you stand for it? You should rise up and tear out his throat. Just as easy as that, huh? You make it sound so simple. It is simple. No, it's not. Becker has men with guns roaming these holes. They're at every exit. You can't just snap your fingers. You just broke those chains like they were nothing. Yes, anyone who tries to. All right, calm down. You've over exerted yourself. Just lie back. Don't touch me. Crichton, I'm your friend. The only one you have in Corova Station. The only one you're going to have. Do you understand what I'm saying? Yes. But no more chains. Not ever. All right, no more chains. That's it.
Jonas
He's back.
Crichton
I've got you. Just take your time and get some rest.
Jonas
Yes, rest.
Crichton
Just for a moment. You're getting your strength back. That's a good sign. A very good sign. I think you'll do nicely, Crichton. In fact, I think you're perfect.

Rust
I've been combing through this surveillance footage for hours. It's not easy grappling with the systems here in Dockerton. As you know, they're sketchy at best.
Jonas
That's usually a good thing. That patchy surveillance grid lets me get around unnoticed when I need to. And I'll bet you've used it plenty of times yourself for the same reason.
Rust
Sure I have, but. Well, it cuts both ways. Right now, I could really use some decent footage to help with this Vogel construction thing, and most of what I've found is totally worthless.
Jonas
But you managed to find something, right?
Rust
Yeah, I think I finally got some data we can use.
Jonas
Well, let's see it.
Rust
Okay, so I managed to dig back through the archives to the date that Banton told us that the last transport came through. If you give me just a second, I'll see if I can. Yeah, here it is.
Jonas
What am I looking at?
Rust
Remember that construction zone Banton mentioned? That's over here at the top of the image. Now, if I roll it forward. There. See that transport?
Jonas
You mean the gray smudge moving past all those other gray smudges?
Rust
Like I said, the quality's not the best, but I found a couple of frames here where I can verify it's the transport we're looking for. It drives right into the construction zone, just like Banton said.
Jonas
And then what?
Rust
I have to switch to another surveillance system here. Wait a second. Okay, there. This gives us a clearer view of the construction zone.
Jonas
Yeah, I see it. And here's the lineup of people hoping to score a job. Right?
Rust
That's it. Some get turned away, and others are taken to the transport, just like Banton told us.
Jonas
So who are these Vogel guys? Can we get anything on facial recognition?
Rust
Not a chance. None of the surveillance is anywhere near close enough to give us the resolution we need. The only footage I can get is from long distance. The construction zone is pretty much a black spot.
Jonas
Unfortunately, something tells me that's not a coincidence.
Rust
Hell, no. Vogel have gone to great lengths to prevent anyone from spying on them during these recruitment operations. No doubt about it.
Jonas
If they really wanted to keep this out of the public eye, why not do it within the privacy of an office building or something?
Rust
I guess because most buildings have Surveillance. At least on the outside. Or maybe because Vogel doesn't even own a single property in the strata, as far as I can tell.
Jonas
Right, because it's just a name rather than a real company.
Rust
Anyway, let me skip forward a little. Here's where the last of the applicants are processed. Then see this? The transport closes up and gets ready to leave.
Jonas
Okay, now for the juicy part.
Rust
Well, don't get ahead of yourself, Rust. Unfortunately, there's nothing conclusive here on the footage. The transport drives further into the construction zone and then, well, it just disappears.
Jonas
It what?
Rust
Yeah, I can't find any footage of it after the moment it leaves. See, here it goes behind these old dilapidated, half built structures that are, well, abandoned parts of the construction zone project, I guess. After that, there's no way to tell where it comes out.
Jonas
So it just vanishes in a puff of smoke. How is that possible?
Rust
It's nothing quite as impressive as that. More a consequence of the surveillance black spot. I've walked the perimeter of this construction zone myself earlier today. There are multiple locations where that transport might have exited the site, but there's no surveillance on any of them. And the worst part is, all of those exits lead in different directions.
Jonas
So this footage you found really doesn't help at all.
Rust
I think it does. It gives us something to go on.
Jonas
How so?
Rust
I figure since we know it's going to show up again tomorrow, that will give us a chance to follow it.
Jonas
But how do we know which exit it's going to take? If we wait at the wrong one, we could lose it.
Rust
Right. We definitely don't want to gamble on one of the exits at random. That's why my plan is to approach this the opposite way. We follow from behind, go in through the entrance, and then follow them across the construction zone. Keep them in our sights at all times.
Jonas
Shouldn't be too hard.
Rust
But there's a complicating factor. The construction zone is a mess. There's debris and piles of bricks and concrete everywhere. It's rugged.
Jonas
Yeah, I noticed in one of those surveillance shots that their transport looked like an all terrain kind of deal. Built to handle that type of environment.
Rust
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's not the kind of surface your van is equipped for.
Jonas
Not really. But I have contacts. I'm sure I could find a rig.
Rust
That would do the job, even on such short notice.
Jonas
Yeah, but are you sure this is the only way we can make it work? Maybe there's an alternative.
Rust
Such as?
Jonas
Do we have any footage from earlier? Something that Might show us where the transport came from originally. If we can trace it back to a warehouse or a garage, we could go knock on their door right now.
Rust
I searched. Believe me, I left no stone unturned on this one. There's nothing. The footage I've shown you, that's all we've got to go on.
Jonas
Well, I guess that settles it, then. We have to be there at that construction zone tomorrow, right?
Rust
Do you need my help with securing an all terrain vehicle?
Jonas
Nah, leave it with me. I've got it covered. Why didn't you get a couple hours sleep? You sure look like you could use it.
Rust
Oh, it's that bad, huh?
Jonas
Hey, if it's any cancellation, you still look fresher than me. Most days.
Rust
Yeah, but at least you have an excuse. You're like a thousand years old or something.
Jonas
And you, by comparison, well, you don't look a day over 900.
Rust
I know you're joking, but to be honest, on days like today, that's exactly how I feel.
Ximena
Hey, guys, can you get these boxes moved out of here, please? We've got another shipment coming in this afternoon, and we'll need the space. Yeah, right over there. Thanks. I'll help you in a sec. I just have to make a phone call first.
Rust
Hey, Ximena. How's it going?
Ximena
Fine. Sienna, how are you?
Rust
Living the good life in midtown. You know how it is.
Ximena
Yeah, sounds nice.
Rust
How about you? Ross tells me you've really got your hands full down at that distribution center.
Ximena
That's an understatement. The place is a madhouse, but we're managing.
Rust
Wish there was something I could do to help.
Ximena
Actually, that's why I'm calling.
Rust
Oh, you need me for something. What is it?
Ximena
Russ said you might be able to get some parts for me. We've had a couple more scanners break down here, as it turns out.
Rust
Again? I thought Russ just replaced one of those.
Ximena
Yeah, he did, but all the gear we've been supplied with is worn out. It's breaking down all over the place.
Rust
Sounds typical. So what do you need?
Ximena
I'm sending you the part numbers now. Our official supplier is saying two weeks to get these in, which is way too long, so I was hoping that maybe you could do better.
Rust
I'll have to run it through the database, but I can almost guarantee I'll be able to beat that. If it's anything like the last one.
Ximena
That would be great. We can't keep up with the demand as it is, and now that we're losing equipment, we.
Rust
The what is it?
Ximena
Hang on. I just need to check something at the window here.
Rust
Sounds like some angry people out there. I hope that's not directed at you.
Ximena
Not us, luckily. It looks like there's a Mellicon squad moving past out on the street. Must be a patrol.
Rust
All right. Those guys aren't exactly popular down in Dr. 10 these days, are they?
Ximena
Not in the least. The crowd's really giving it to them.
Rust
Maybe if they did something to help now and then instead of showing up with their guns and shit. What was that? Ximena.
Ximena
Are you okay? There was an explosion on the street. God damn it. This looks bad.
Rust
Is anyone hurt?
Ximena
I'm gonna have to go. Sienna. Sorry. I'll call back later.
Rust
Yeah, of course. Stay safe.
Ximena
Guys, it looks like people are hurt out there. We need to help. Quick, gather up those dim packs and that box of supplies and come with me. Hurry over there. See if you can help those people. I've got this Millicon guy. Okay, hold still, mister. I'm here to help.
Jonas
I need to get this armor on.
Ximena
What's the matter? You can't breathe?
Crichton
Was it then?
Rust
That's it, Frank.
Ximena
Okay, let me help you. Turn on your side. I'll pull this way.
Crichton
Okay.
Jonas
Yeah, that's it.
Crichton
It's off.
Ximena
Shit. Chemicals have gone right through this armor. Just a second. I've got sims. All right. Here. Okay, lie back. Is that any better?
Crichton
Yeah, that's good. That's good.
Ximena
Let me apply some dressings to these wounds. God, they're all over you.
Jonas
Bastards. Got me good. Lucky you were here.
Ximena
Yeah, you got that right.
Jonas
Where did you come from?
Ximena
The distribution center just over there.
Jonas
It's nothing less than a miracle finding a helping hand in a neighborhood like this.
Ximena
People help each other in this neighborhood all the time.
Jonas
No, I just meant since I'm wearing this armor.
Ximena
Oh, that. Well, I'm here to help whoever's in need, regardless of what kind of uniform they're wearing.
Jonas
Wish they were more like you.
Ximena
No offense, mister, but Lieutenant Bulger. Lieutenant Bulger, no offense, but maybe you and your soldiers would be better off staying out of this part of town since. Since clearly no one wants you here.
Jonas
That's not really an option.
Ximena
Why not?
Jonas
I'm in command of a special unit targeting resistance cells operating in this part of Dockerton. We have to go to them, root them out. Or they'll just stay here forever, dug in. And the longer they stay, the deeper the rock grows.
Ximena
From what I hear, the resistance isn't going anywhere. More and more people sign up every day. Not sure this is a fight you can win.
Jonas
We still have them out, manned and outgunned. It's only a matter of time until we wear them down.
Ximena
If you say so.
Jonas
I have to attend to my squad and organize reinforcements. So while I'm grateful for your help, I'm going to have to ask you to step back now.
Ximena
Yeah. There's not much else I can do for you anyway. So here, let me help you.
Jonas
What's your name?
Ximena
Amina.
Jonas
Thank you, Ximena. I won't forget this. And I'll do everything in my power to see that you and your people are commended for this.
Ximena
If those commendations come with food and supplies for the sick and hungry in this neighborhood, then we'll gladly accept. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.
Jonas
Fair enough.
Ximena
Oh, and Lieutenant, maybe next time you might consider taking a different street. We have enough shit on our plate without Milly Khan and the Resistance trying to blow each other up on our doorstep.
Jonas
Wish I could promise you that, but I can't. All right, Mitchell, James, secure the perimeter. You two, get the engine ready for evac. Anderson, I want all available data on the attack vector so we can plan a counter.
Crichton
Come on, let's move it.
Ximena
Yeah, that's what I thought you'd say.

The Strata – Episode 12.4: Stronger Than Blood - Part 4
Release Date: March 11, 2025
Host/Author: Mark R. Healy
In Episode 12.4 of The Strata, titled "Stronger Than Blood - Part 4", listeners are plunged deeper into the bleak realities of Corova Station, a research facility that doubles as a prison within a dystopian city. This installment highlights the fragile alliance between Crichton, an ageing courier battling severe injuries, and Jonas, a member of the data grid restoration team. Their uneasy partnership is tested as they navigate the perilous environment, face internal conflicts, and encounter external threats that could jeopardize their mission and survival.
The episode opens with Crichton awakening and confronting Jonas about his intentions to escape Corova Station. Their dialogue reveals underlying tensions and mutual distrust.
Crichton: "Maybe you haven't figured this out yet, but you don't have much going for you at this point. You're weak. You have no allies here, no way of getting out."
[02:30]
Jonas introduces himself as part of the data grid restoration team, asserting his indispensability.
Jonas: "My name is Jonas. I'm part of the data grid restoration team here at Corova Station."
[02:10]
The conversation quickly escalates as Crichton expresses his disdain for Jonas's perceived inaction and inability to escape.
Crichton divulges the grim reality of Corova Station, describing it as a research facility that effectively serves as a prison for its inhabitants. He hints at atrocities occurring within its walls.
Crichton: "There are nightmares within these walls, nightmares brought to life."
[03:50]
Jonas becomes defensive, revealing his attempts to escape and the physical constraints imposed upon him.
Jonas: "I took some precautions after what happened last time. Precautions? You tried to escape, remember?"
[04:15]
Rust enters the scene, representing higher authority within the station. He reprimands Jonas for neglecting his assigned tasks, specifically regarding the maintenance of examination rooms.
Rust: "Stern's told me that you've been wasting hours on your little pet project here."
[07:32]
Crichton attempts to defend Jonas, indicating a growing alliance between them as they face external pressures from Dr. Becker.
Jonas and Rust analyze surveillance footage to trace the movement of a transport vehicle associated with Vogel, an enigmatic faction involved in recruitment operations. Their investigation reveals gaps in surveillance, suggesting intentional obfuscation by Vogel.
Rust: "Vogel have gone to great lengths to prevent anyone from spying on them during these recruitment operations."
[14:11]
They devise a plan to track the transport vehicle, considering the challenging terrain of the construction zone and the need for specialized equipment.
Jonas: "We follow from behind, go in through the entrance, and then follow them across the construction zone. Keep them in our sights at all times."
[15:50]
As Jonas and Rust prepare for their mission, an explosion breaks out on the streets, leading to chaos. Amidst the turmoil, Ximena (later identified as Amina) emerges as a savior, tending to Jonas who is critically injured.
Ximena: "Let me help you. Turn on your side. I'll pull this way."
[20:44]
Jonas: "That's it, Frank."
[20:42]
Their brief alliance is tested when Lieutenant Bulger arrives, intent on suppressing resistance cells in Dockerton. A confrontation ensues, highlighting the ongoing conflict between authority and resistance.
Jonas: "We have to go to them, root them out."
[22:07]
Ximena: "People help each other in this neighborhood all the time."
[21:36]
Amina asserts her commitment to aiding those in need, challenging Jonas's militaristic approach.
Ximena: "If those commendations come with food and supplies for the sick and hungry in this neighborhood, then we'll gladly accept. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother."
[23:10]
Jonas orders his team to secure the perimeter and prepare for evacuation, signaling the urgency of their situation.
Jonas: "Get the engine ready for evac. Anderson, I want all available data on the attack vector so we can plan a counter."
[23:21]
Crichton and Rust assist in the frantic efforts to manage the aftermath of the explosion, showcasing the fragile dynamics between characters striving for survival.
Crichton: "Come on, let's move it."
[23:36]
As the episode concludes, tensions remain high with unresolved conflicts and the looming threat of further confrontations.

Survival and Trust: The episode delves into the struggles of surviving within a controlled and hostile environment, emphasizing the importance and difficulty of trust between unlikely allies.
Oppression and Resistance: The interactions between Jonas and authority figures like Dr. Becker and Lieutenant Bulger highlight the ongoing battle between oppressive forces and emerging resistance movements.
Isolation and Community: While Corova Station symbolizes isolation, the emergence of characters like Ximena (Amina) underscores the human need for community and mutual support in times of crisis.
