Hey listeners, I have another great show to share with you this week. It's called the 100 handed and it's a serialized urban fantasy horror podcast about the exploits of a tattooed magician, Wexler and his werewolf partner V, as they combat the forces of darkness in modern day Texas. In this universe, magic is real and the people who use it are real bad. The Gloom pervades our world, harnessed by the worst humanity has to offer. The Gloom is a force of immense power, twisting desire for status, wealth and influence into something malignant. Each season follows Wexler and V as they unravel a conspiracy involving a dangerous organization of evil magicians hell bent on domination. I listened to the 100 handed and was drawn in right away by the great sound design and fantastic world building. The voice actors are great as well and I found it easy to get invested in the characters right from the first episode. This is a show that only recently came to my attention, but I have to say I can't wait to listen to more. You can find and listen to the 100 Handed anywhere you listen to podcasts or at 100 Handed. Stay tuned right now to hear the first episode. I hope you enjoy.
Evan Wexler
Soul stealing Magi.
V
Flesh eating creeps.
Evan Wexler
Yeah, it's just another day at the office for the madhouse. My werewolf partner and I attempt to keep the peace without being torn to pieces. Weep at the wonder, howl at the horror, and keep a light on. It's going to get dark. Episode 0 Bad Blood.
Cam
Sammy. Huh? The foot thing. Sorry, Cam. It's just, you know, we have in the bag. I know what we have in the the back. I'm starting to think this wasn't such a good idea. What if we get stopped? There's a cop right there. Somebody's bound to have noticed him missing by now. Nobody's missed him. But what if. If a cop pulls us over, we'll fuck him up. I know a few Blood Singer spells. I'm not afraid of the pigs. I'm not just talking about the cops. I'm talking about the guys with the tattoos. They won't be a problem. They don't mess with people. They mess with people like us when we fucking kidnap kids. Cam. I read about it. I read about it. You want to be stuck doing small time shit? Because fuck that, I got student loan debt out the ass and I can't get a halfway decent fucking job that doesn't involve a friar or five different gig economy apps? Fuck that. Fuck everything about that. Fuck slaving away for some Jeff Bezos wannabe. When the power of the glued is right and for the taking, I can finally make something of myself. I'm just saying, man, we should watch out for the imaginative answers. You worry too much, Sammy. Don't worry. I'll keep you safe from the guys with the mystical tramp stamps. The kid's still out. Still asleep. It's good. It's good. Hopefully the slumbersalt keeps him out for a while. Christ, I can't believe there's actually stuff called slumbersalt. Looks like I just stepped into hog farts. Hogwarts. Shut up. What if he wakes up? Didn't we do it anyway? Sammy, I didn't snatch that little bastard just to go halfway. You feel me? I don't have any more Slumbersault. If he wakes up, he wakes up. And the ritual proceeds regardless. Might just be more messy. Okay, okay, I. I can do this. It's better be worth will be. I've done the research. The suffering of the innocent, the young, the elderly has plenty of power. If we're willing to do what needs to be done. This is the beginning, you know. A new life. A way out of the rat race. Cam, slow down. Huh? There's a guy in the middle of the road. I see him. He's not moving.
Evan Wexler
Then I'll make him move.
Cam
Move. What's the deal? I can't believe this. Get the out of the way. He's not moving. He'll move. Oh, geez. Oh. Are you seeing what I'm seeing? Yeah. An is about to be roadkill if he doesn't get out of my way. His skin is glowing. Christ. It's one of the tattooed men. They use their bodies like tomes, inking on the magic spells. Cam, what the fuck are you doing? High speed tattoo removal. Oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God. What the hell? Did I hit a lamppost? What the hell just happened? Sammy, check the kid. Sammy, it looks like they're still good. Come on. Come on. Please. No, no, no. This is all wrong. Think camp, think it. Just cut the losses and run. St. Did I break a rib? What the. This is the middle of the goddamn road. The front of the vehicle's crushed in. Looks like I hit a pylon or something. But there's nothing there. Nothing I could have hit.
Evan Wexler
Not quite true. You violated the pact, Magi. I know what you have back there.
Cam
Impossible. Just. What the hell was that? Some kind of dog? Just who are you?
Evan Wexler
Evan Wexler. Drafted a magimancer of the madhouse. You can surrender Yourself to the madhouse. Submit to interrogation. Submit to judgment.
Cam
And if I say no?
Evan Wexler
I can give you a moment to prepare your psyche for death.
Cam
Oh, well, in that case. Fuck you. Impossible.
Evan Wexler
Slab skin. A nifty tattoo that turns the skin into stone. You'll have to do better than that.
Cam
So does that spell make you bulletproof?
Evan Wexler
Uh huh.
Cam
And extra tough?
Evan Wexler
Yep.
Cam
And gives you super speed?
Evan Wexler
Well, not really. It's kind of hard to move, as you might guess.
Cam
Good.
Evan Wexler
Hey. Get back here.
Cam
Watch it. Watch. He's still after me. Faster. But my rib with the. There. That abandoned warehouse. Just go away. Go away.
Evan Wexler
You're bleeding pretty badly. I know you're here somewhere.
Cam
He doesn't have anything. Stay hidden by these cracks. Crates. There's a lead pipe.
Evan Wexler
You know, I've got a particular disdain for those that hurt children. Now I know why the Magi do it. Children like. Closer to birth and death than most. Closer to the imagination. The other side. The origin of all power. People. No. People is too polite a word. Scum like you think that stealing that fire is a bypass to greatness. That's the gloom talking, Cam. You think you know what you're doing, but you're weak willed. You're nothing, Cam. Less than nothing.
Cam
You.
Evan Wexler
There you are.
Cam
Die. Die. Die.
Evan Wexler
I told you, okay? If the bullets didn't work, do you think throwing the pistol is gonna take that? You done?
Cam
I'm just. Just getting started. You aren't the only one with magic, freak.
Evan Wexler
Where'd you get that knife?
Cam
Enough talk. The singer calls to the sanguinary. My blood for bloodshed. Crush my foe.
Evan Wexler
Blood tentacles. Idiot. You can't draw that much. You're gonna bleed yourself dry.
Cam
Strangle him. Thanks. Impressive, isn't it? I can call to bl. Make it obey my commands. The way blood wraps around you, restraining you. You can't do anything, can you? Who said you couldn't get blood for the stone? This power. It's so raw. I've wanted this my entire life.
Evan Wexler
You're kidding yourself. And you're getting away with this.
Cam
This is just the beginning. You're a road bump on my path to greatness, scum. I'm done ride sharing. And the only delivery I'm doing is sending assholes like you straight to hell. Thrash him like a rag doll. Incredible. I could get used to this.
Evan Wexler
You'll be dead before dawn. You're drunk on the.
Cam
Well then I'll have another round. Bartender.
Evan Wexler
You're like all the other scrub Magi. You find an abandoned prop like that knife. Learn an Incantation or two? Think you're unstoppable? You stepped into the big leagues as soon as you kidnap that boy.
Cam
You don't seem like you're in a position to talk. Actually, let's make that literal. Choke him. What's so funny?
Evan Wexler
I can tell you're greener than goose vomit because you don't know the first rule of fixing an imagineer.
Cam
What's that?
Evan Wexler
We work in pairs. Took your tea. Took your sweet time, v. I'm not Dr. Doolittle. Go take your nullifier vein.
V
Solomon really needs to add Tums to their concoctions. I don't feel so great. Find anything, Wetzler?
Evan Wexler
Blood Singer. Inexperienced? She used this knife prop to punch above her weight class. This knife was probably made by an experienced blood singer. No idea how this chump got her hands on it. Did you get the kid?
V
Yeah. I tore the van door off and carried him with me. I put him just outside the warehouse entrance before scrambling up to the second floor. If the boy woke up, I didn't want him to see.
Evan Wexler
Yeah. Let's take a look at him. Still breathing. Generally a good sign.
Cam
Smith.
Evan Wexler
Some residue around the nose and mouth area.
V
Is that safe?
Evan Wexler
Unlikely. It was a severe poison. My gut tells me they wanted to save him for a ritual later. It is a severe poison. There's nothing on the books that'll kill me at this lower dose. Not before we can get back to Mad House. Enough, Solomon. Detox me. It's just somersault from the taste of it. He'll be fun in a few hours. Like I thought. It was a snagging stab. Snatch the kid, knock him out, harvest him later in a safe environment.
V
We could have killed him with that stunt. Back there in the road.
Evan Wexler
We couldn't let those magi get away. They break the pact once, they'll do it again. And again and again. This is how Mad House does business. You don't like it? You know the alternative?
V
Whatever you tell yourself to help you sleep at night. We better go. What about the boy?
Evan Wexler
Nothing that flock medicine won't take care of, given time. Leave them here.
V
We're just going to leave two corpses and an unconscious child?
Evan Wexler
They'll come up with some narrative. They won't quite believe it, but it's our job to keep the pack of porcelain, not to spin a comforting story for the norms. What a goddamn waste. Imagine I looked like she was barely 20.
V
While man's desires and aspirations stir, he cannot choose but err.
Evan Wexler
Milton.
V
Goethe. From Faust. I don't know much about the gloom, but calling on it seems like a deal with the devil if I've ever seen one.
Evan Wexler
Ever to you.
V
For a reader, some of us actually have hobbies. Chain smoking doesn't count.
Evan Wexler
That's our cue to leave. We gotta clean the tattoo residue and get another batch for the next mission.
V
What's next on the docket?
Evan Wexler
Smallrock in North Texas. Point of contact is a waitress at a rock and roll greasy spoon.
V
And the damage?
Evan Wexler
Missing folks? No kids, thankfully, but we'll still need to check the nature of it out. If there's any violation of a pact.
V
Of porcelain, terminate with extreme prejudice.
Evan Wexler
My favorite kind of prejudice. We'll swing by the Madhouse to prepare. Then we'll see what horror Small Rock has been hiding. Voice Cast:
In the episode titled "The 100 Handed," listeners are introduced to a gripping urban fantasy horror narrative set in modern-day Texas. This serialized podcast follows the journey of Evan Wexler, a tattooed magician, and his werewolf partner, V, as they navigate a dystopian landscape plagued by dark magical forces known as the Gloom. The episode establishes the intense and perilous world where magic is real and intertwined with human vices such as greed, power, and corruption.
The episode opens with Sammy and Cam discussing their dubious plan to kidnap a child—a move they believe will elevate them from their current struggling status. Cam is desperate to escape his mundane life burdened by student loan debt and the instability of gig economy jobs. He rationalizes their action by stating, “When the power of the gloom is right and for the taking, I can finally make something of myself” (01:44).
As Cam and Sammy proceed with their plan, a pivotal turn occurs when Cam unexpectedly encounters Evan Wexler, a formidable magimancer affiliated with the Madhouse—a governing body overseeing magical activities. Evan's introduction is marked by authoritative dialogue: “Not quite true. You violated the pact, Magi. I know what you have back there” (06:19). This confrontation escalates into a fierce battle showcasing various magical abilities, such as Cam’s "Slab skin" tattoo that renders him nearly bulletproof and his attempts to summon blood tentacles for attack.
Despite Cam’s aggressive efforts, Evan adeptly counters his abilities, ultimately overpowering him. V arrives just in time to assist Evan, neutralizing Cam's threat and ensuring the mission's continuation. The aftermath reveals that the kidnapped child has been poisoned, a tactic implying a larger, sinister ritual is at play. Evan reflects on the necessity of their actions, emphasizing the Madhouse's uncompromising stance against those who disrupt the magical pacts: “We couldn't let those magi get away. They break the pact once, they'll do it again” (14:16).
The episode concludes with Evan and V preparing for their next mission in Smallrock, North Texas, indicating ongoing conflicts and the relentless pursuit to uphold the Madhouse’s control over magical practices. This setup promises further exploration of the dark underbelly of their world and the complex dynamics between magic users and their enforcers.
Evan Wexler: A seasoned magimancer aligned with the Madhouse, Evan embodies authority and expertise in magical combat. His disdain for those who misuse magic, especially against the innocent, drives his relentless pursuit of maintaining order. His strategic mindset and combat proficiency make him a formidable protector against malevolent magicians.
V: Evan’s werewolf partner brings brute strength and agility to their missions. His loyalty and combat skills complement Evan’s methods, creating a balanced and effective duo against their adversaries.
Cam: A desperate individual driven by financial burdens and dissatisfaction with his current life, Cam represents those who fall prey to the allure of the Gloom. His reckless actions and misuse of magic highlight the dangers of unchecked ambition and the corrupting influence of dark powers.
Sammy: Involved in the initial kidnapping plan, Sammy is portrayed as a figure willing to engage in morally dubious activities for personal gain. Her involvement underscores the theme of ordinary individuals being lured into darkness.
Corruption and Power: The episode delves into how the desire for power and status can corrupt individuals, leading them to commit heinous acts under the influence of the Gloom.
Duty and Morality: Evan and V's unwavering commitment to their mission contrasts sharply with Cam and Sammy's morally questionable actions, highlighting themes of duty, justice, and ethical boundaries in the face of darkness.
The Supernatural versus Humanity: The interplay between magical abilities and human flaws creates a dynamic tension, illustrating how supernatural powers can amplify both the best and worst aspects of human nature.
Survival and Desperation: Characters like Cam embody the lengths to which individuals will go to escape their dire circumstances, emphasizing survival instincts over moral integrity.
