Dr. Amy
Welcome to the Thyroid Fixer podcast, where we dive deep into the world of thyroid and hormones, especially for you ladies navigating perimenopause and menopause, and really for anyone struggling with hypothyroidism, I'm your host, Dr. Amy, thyroid and hormone specialist and CEO of a global telemedicine practice where we prescribe the right thyroid treatment and bioidentical hormones to all 50 states and most of Canada, helping you become that badass human that you're meant to be. So if you're battling weight gain and heroin loss, you can't lose weight. No matter what you do, your energy levels are plummeting and your libido left town. Then you're in the right place, and you have found your tribe. Remember, I want you to embrace every inch of that badass woman that you truly are. So if you're ready to dive in and fix things, let's get started. Let's talk about the power of berberine for blood sugar control and for moving you into a state of insulin sensitivity. Now, what does that mean? So when you are insulin resistant, we can look at your fasting insulin number on labs and see that's above a six. You can look at your glucose, your fasting glucose on your labs is that above an 85. Is your continuous glucose monitor that you're slapping on the back of your arm consistently reading above an 85. Is your hemoglobin A1c above a 5.2? If you answered yes to any of those. Oh, wait, let me also add in. Do you crave carbohydrates and sugar through the day? Literally, where your. Your body is screaming at you to go get something from a vending machine or eat something sweet, then that points back to your blood sugar and your blood sugar being out of whack and being on this roller coaster. Now, what this means for you is inflammation. It means weight gain. It means an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's. Now, if you're carrying around an extra 20 pounds, you're not really thinking about your BR and the health of your brain when you're 70 and 80. But I'm here to tell you the fastest way to age is to keep your blood sugar on that roller coaster and keep it high. To get control over our cravings, to get control over our weight, to be able to tap into our fat stores for fuel, we need to have steady, regulated glucose. And this is where Blood Sugar Fixer comes in. Blood Sugar Fixer was one of the OG supplements in the Fixer line. And I designed this because I kept seeing over and over again with the patients we were working with. Elevated insulin, elevated A1C, elevated glucose, inability to lose weight, carbohydrate, and sugar cravings. And this is where Blood Sugar Fixer comes in. It takes that wild ride, that roller coaster of blood sugar, and it squishes it together to a nice wavelike pattern. Steady, balanced, even, so that your cravings, you no longer get those cravings screaming at you. It allows your body to literally tap into the fat that you're grabbing on your stomach or your thighs, saying, gee, I really wish that this was gone. This big chunk. Yes, it taps into those fat stores and uses that to burn as fuel for energy. But you can't do that if you're a sugar burner. You can't do that if you're insulin resistant. You can't do that if your blood sugar is dysregulated. So what you want to do is bring in Blood Sugar Fixer. Now, I made it more economical. There's a lot of companies on the market that they only have their Berberine at 400 milligrams. Well, then you have to take three per day. The therapeutic dose is 1200 milligrams. I've also seen it at 1000 or 1200 milligrams. And if you take that all at once in one capsule, you might get some loose stool that becomes a little unpleasant to deal with. So 600 milligrams per capsule is what's in Blood Sugar Fixer. You take it twice a day, one with each main meal, and you will start to notice a difference, really, within a couple weeks of your cravings. And then as you are testing, you're going to see those numbers come into alignment. You're going to see the numbers come down on your CGM. Your A1C will come into that beautiful optimal range below a 5.2, your insulin will become beautiful once again below a 6. And the bottom line is you will feel better, you will decrease inflammation, you will lose weight, you will gain control of your carbohydrate and sugar cravings, and you will protect your brain. So that's Blood Sugar Fixer twice a day, one cap twice a day. That's it. Are you trying to lose weight? I mean, most of us are. But when you cut calories or you use those new Beverly Hills soccer mom drug of choice for weight loss injectables, you're not going to get in enough protein. And that's the problem. That's where you start losing Muscle and fat at the same time. You don't want to lose your sexy lean muscle. So Kion Aminos helps prevent muscle loss. Kean Aminas can help you feel full when you're cutting calories, which that's a bonus and it's going to help you build that lean muscle for a faster metabolism, a lean tone, sexy body. So add in Kion aminos. I do it every single day. I drink them during my workout and then I'll also drink them throughout the day because that's supporting my muscles, keeping my muscles as I'm just sitting at my desk working. Add in Kion aminos. Try them out. I love the berry, I love the mango, but you're going to love all the flavors. Toss it in your water, shake it up, drink it throughout the day and then like I said, definitely during a workout. So you are going to use my link to save 20% off. So that's a no brainer for you to try these out. You're going to go to getkeon.com that's G E T K I O N.com backslash you thank Thyroid and that is going to give you 20% off your first order. Let me know what you think. You all have been hearing me talk about, number one, my addiction to skin care and anti aging and basically looking young for as long as I possibly can, hopefully into my 80s and 90s till the day that I die. But with this addiction comes me trying a boatload of different skincare lines out there. And you know, I got to tell you, through the years I would bounce from one to the next and there would be some good aspects of this one and some good aspects of that one. But I would never really fall in love and lock down on one particular line that I felt, okay, this can be it. This line is actually making changes in my skin. Not just the claims that you see on TV with airbrushed photos of claims. I'm using air quotes here. I'm talking real noticeable changes in my skin, noticeable shifts in, in the depth of my wrinkles and in the quality and the texture of my skin. These are all things that you hear on ads. But then you start using a product and you go, you know, I don't know about this. This isn't really working. This is why I am bringing you all my absolute vetted FL for two, three years now. Favorite skincare company, Young Goose. And the reason why I'm bringing my dear friend and CEO of Young Goose, Amitay Eshel on to talk to you guys today. Is because I have noticed a true marked difference in my skin from using Young Goose. And yes, I've used it for years, but I saw this change really within the first six months of using it and I knew this is it, this is going to be my line from here on out. And they're always innovating, they're always changing, they're always coming up with new things that I add into the line. But we're going to talk about really some core products that you can start with. Start your skincare the right way and oh my gosh, you are going to notice such a difference. So, Amitay, thank you so much for coming on today. So we can really unpack what skincare regimen they should be on, but let's go deeper and, and let's unpack even what their skin and skin conditions and skin quality, how that reflects what's actually going on in the inside and how thyroid and hormonal changes can change our skin so rapidly almost overnight. So thank you so much for jumping on the show.
Amitay Eshel
Thank you for the best intro I think I received in my life. So I appreciate it.
Dr. Amy
Well, it's real. I mean, it's just so from my core, from my heart, because I genuinely love your entire line. I'm like, addicted to it because it's the first time in my life that a skincare line actually does what it says it's supposed to do. Go figure.
Amitay Eshel
Yeah, yeah, I know this is, you know, it's something I talk with a lot of people kind of off air and with you as well. I feel for every skincare company that at the end of the day needs to say certain things for you to buy them and hopefully stick with them. So, you know, when we started Young Goose, it was a passion project that was, that revolved around nad, which I'm sure you've spoken about before and we're going to speak about today. But it was a passion project that didn't actually start as a skincare company. It started as a project to affect DNA expression just so happened in skin cells. So I think a lot of our messaging came from that. A lot of the way that we view how we talk about the product and maybe our sincerity and our mission statement, etc. And something that has withstood the test of time for the last five years.
Dr. Amy
Well, and skincare is your focus. It's not like you're doing this on the side while you're manufacturing other oral supplements. You are focused and passionate about skincare and taking care of your skin. The Right way and preventing aging and preventing the damage that occurs. So I think that speaks volumes to the quality that goes into your ingredients, too.
Amitay Eshel
Yeah, I think we often, many people are. They have even a. An unhealthy obsession with the quality of ingredients that they eat. As we speak, I saw my friends gathering together in D.C. for a MAHA dinner, and Paul Saladino was there, and he brought to a restaurant his beef tallow, and he wouldn't have the table eat steaks that were not cooked in his beef tallow. Okay, so why am I saying this story? It's because it makes sense when you talk about food ingredients, what goes into your body. But most people don't know that there is a more stark discrepancy between different companies and the quality of the ingredients that we use. So between like one hyaluronic acid to. In one company to the other, or vitamin C or whatever, pick the molecule. Then there is between the meat, the difference between the meat in McDonald's and Whole Foods. And that's a very tough message to, to relay as far as skin care is concerned. Like, I don't know how many people care definitely less than what they eat. And second of all, it's something that you can't show on the label. There is no, you know, USDA for ingredient quality.
Dr. Amy
Right, right. No, that's a good point. That's an excellent point. I think we. We do hyper focus on everything that goes into our mouth, but then we forget what actually is going on our body. And is that effective? Is it healthy? Is it safe? All of that. So that's a, that's an excellent point. We're going to get deeper into the ingredients that you use and just how powerful they are for. For a multitude of different things. Cellular cleanup, reducing oxidative stress, supporting collagen. But I want to. I want to start first with what I mentioned in the beginning about how the skin is not just cosmetic. It actually is a window into our mitochondrial function, our hormone balance, our thyroid health. So can you unpack that for us?
Amitay Eshel
Yes. We can even start, kind of start this unpacking process. Build that bridge, if you would, through, you know, relating to the last. To the last point we made, which is your skin. One of the things you hear a lot is, like, you absorb things through your skin, but really your skin doesn't absorb that much. If it were to absorb molecules as well as your gut or even your. Your gums or the lining of your nostrils, which, which is a mucosa layer, it would have been much easier for senior companies to create a great results. But what your skin does do very well is relay information. So your skin is a highway of information of environmental stressors to your brain. And that's I think a very, it is something that we really, really should consider when we use ingredients, whether positive or negative, because we can directly affect brain function and directly affect the stress responses of your brain. And it's relaying it to the rest of your body through ingredients that are causing stress to your skin or vice versa. Ingredients that are affecting your skin's longevity, which is, you know, unpacking that. It would be lowering senescent burden, which means the cells that are very old, but your body actually couldn't kill them off. So they're lingering around, they're building up and they are actually creating a negative sum load to your, to your skin. These relay inflammation back to your brain. Beautiful research, actually, very interesting research that was done in Lisbon, in, in Portugal. This is one aspect, but also the aspect of mitochondria. Your skin is an organ that has many mitochondria and that mitochondria's job is to stave off some of the damaged DNA damage to, to your, to your skin, it creates energy, et cetera. So when we get older and your mitochondria isn't working correctly, you are going to get a cascade of inflammation and metabolic stress on the rest of your body. And finally it is the ability to detox or to release toxins. So if your body, your skin isn't in good shape as far as anything for blood circulation to its ability to again like literally release toxins into the environment, that is going to create the buildup as well. So it's actually an organ that seriously is built to contribute to your whole, whole body. And as we grow older, it is one of the organs that becomes the most problematic.
Dr. Amy
Interesting. Okay, so if someone is actually seeing, let's say, more rapid aging than what would be anticipated for their age, and I've heard women say this, like literally I woke up and looked in the mirror and I look 10 years older. What does that reflect back to that person? Is, is it as simple as, wow, you really need to change up your skin care and look internally as to how is your mitochondria functioning, how's your hormonal balance, what's going on inside with oxidative stress where it's, it's showing in your skin and aging it faster?
Amitay Eshel
It's actually that overnight realization would normally normally be tied to hormone to hormonal shift. So perimenopause and menopause. Like there is a growing body of literature showing that women are going to have two separate peak apex of aging, rapid aging.
Dr. Amy
Yeah.
Amitay Eshel
One would happen in their late 40s, late 30s. Excuse me. And one would happen in their early 50s. And guess what happens in those times. You know, perimenopause and menopause. So first and foremost, we want to look there. But as you are a definitely a figure in the field of thyroid health, many, many times perimenopause is tied to hormone imbalance. I mean, to, to thyroid. Thyroid hormone imbalance specifically, but thyroid function.
Dr. Amy
Oh, yeah.
Amitay Eshel
And then. So when we have that rapid shift, skincare is not going to be the thing that you should look for. You should have created a resilient skin to begin with. That would have withstood that better, that would have had the reservoirs to stave off that effect a little bit more. But if it's already happening, first and foremost, you really need to look at those two pillars, which are obviously like hormonal shifts and thyroid. You could also, let's say it's that not those. The third pillar would be immune issues. That could be from gut permeability, increased gut permeability. That could be from any, any type of stress on your system. Lyme, a lot of times does that.
Dr. Amy
Yep.
Amitay Eshel
We have like a three pronged monster there as far as, like, you know, driving aging and is, as every US President has shown us, stress isn't great for you as far as, like skin as well. So that's. As far as that. Having said that, you are going to. So having said that, you know, my favorite word recently is prejuvenation. So the ability to prepare your skin or to create youthful resilience in the skin is something that I think most people overlook. Most people think of a problem when it already is happening to them. And they don't realize that the best, the best time to start is yesterday. The second best time is today. So they don't realize that resilience is something that is incremental and is built over time. And as far as skin care, it's actually reliant on something we call the 12 hallmarks of aging, the 12 reasons your skin ages. So wherever you have a chink in your armor there in those 12 hallmarks of aging, that's going to be where aging is going to creep in. The good news are you don't need like to get a degree in biology or in genetics. You really can focus on very specific set of molecules that would cover those 12 hallmarks of aging.
Dr. Amy
Okay, so let's go into those molecules. And by the way, I'm so happy that you said that about rejuvenation because what was going through my mind as you were talking is I wish I could go back and talk to my 35 year old self. All my 30 year olds out there, even my 40 year olds out there right now, you're thinking, oh, my skin looks okay. I don't need to invest in my skin. I'm just going to use these crappy drugstore products. Products or stuff I order off of Amazon and call it a day. And I am telling you, if I could go back in time and talk to my 30 to 35 year old self, I would have upped my skincare game. I've started Botox at the age of 35. Why in the hell didn't I start a good skincare regimen at the age of 35? I mean, mainly because like I said in the intro, I never found something like Young Goose that actually worked that I could stick with and say that it made a difference. But this message is for really anyone in their 20s and 30s looking to prejuvenate and protect their skin. And then ladies, even if you are in your 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and you have kind of let your skin care go by the wayside a little bit now, you're tired of all the wrinkles and looking like your mom or your grandma because you start to see that show through. That's what I see, you know, little signs of my mother shining through my skin. And, and you know, that's when it's time to take it, take the reins and make changes. So what, what is that key ingredient or missing component? Like we said, is it the nad? Because we know that thyroid dysfunction will accelerate mitochondrial decline. We know that NAD supports ATP production and DNA repair. So how does that then tie into our skin?
Amitay Eshel
That's a great question. And, and, and I'm even going to throw estrogen there at a certain point. So NAD is really the currency for repair in your body as a whole. Anytime, any, any type of repair that your body is going to engage in, it will need to have a reservoir of NAD that it will go through in that repair process. Sometimes. You mentioned mitochondria. Mitochondria is what creates energy. It's at the power plant of the cell. Sometimes it's going to be mitochondria related, but sometimes it won't. Sometimes other parts of our cellular matrix, the, the relationship between that I like to imagine our skin is, is a city Inhabited by cells. So sometimes the city is going to. The power is going to be the thing that we need in order to repair whatever that is. But sometimes it's going to be manual workers. Sometimes it's going to be a water in their skin, it's blood. Sometimes it's going to be. We can think of. Of heuristics until tomorrow, but at the end of the day, it needs all of those workers in place, all of those systems in place in order to maintain vibrancy and also repair vibrancy, which I'm going to get to. So NAD is extremely important. And NAD really, again, we need it like a type of, like your bank account. Every time you want to do anything in life, especially in America, they're going to make you pay for it. You got to show your credit score and your. In your. And how much money you have, and that's kind of your NAD. It lowers with age. By the time we're 60 years old, we have half of what we started with. And for women especially, science is not like 100% sure why there are culprits, but not all of them are substantiated, and we're not sure about all of them. But it is tied to hormonal changes. It is tied to challenges that are associated with hormonal changes. Thyroid is actually one of them. But we can see that the graph matches pretty evenly the hormonal changes in a woman's life, throughout a woman's life. And so one of the things that we have to do is to artificially keep NAD levels high, because we know that, that although there are hormonal changes that are happening, maybe, which are tied to collagen production, skin elasticity, et cetera, we know that we can circumvent a lot of those, a lot of the visible decline by keeping high levels of. Of nad. The other molecule, the other really, the other thing that is needed to tango, because you need two, apparently, to tango, is spermidine.
Dr. Amy
Yeah, that's fascinating because we hear about spermidine internally, but you're talking about topically.
Amitay Eshel
Yes. So spermidine, in my opinion, is more important than nad. When we're talking about the sin, the not synthetic, but the artificial simulation and maintenance of youth in our body. And that's because NAD can be augmented by many different things. And so it's not that difficult. Spermidine. Keeping high levels of spermidine is actually pretty difficult. So spermidine is what we need in our body to have autophagy. Autophagy is cellular cleanup. So you can think of. Let's say you made collagen, okay? That protein, that collagen protein. With time it becomes old, it becomes not functioning so well. Something needs to go and break that down so we can make new collagen with the same material. Doesn't matter how many collagen powder, grams of collagen powder you're gonna drink. It's not, not a lot's going to get to your skin. So your skin actually needs to like recycle a lot, a lot of those materials. We mentioned mitochondria, everything, everything that your cells make. Every cell actually gets older and we need to clean up that older cells and create newer cells. That is the role of autophagy. Okay, which is, which is in Greek, self eating. So I mentioned the 12 hallmarks of aging spermidine addresses through what I just explained. Explained 9 out of 12. So imagine you had one machinery that 9 out of 12 problems that we have in the city, it's going to go ahead and fix. That's very valuable. And what we've learned very, very, very recently is that so spermidine is akin to fasting. When you fast, you also trigger that autophagy reaction. So what we've learned is, is that spermidine isn't only mimicking fasting. It's needed for your even, even for yourself to find in the DNA where autophagy, the instructions for autophagy are. So even if you are fasting like a, like a madman or a woman, and you are, you haven't eaten anything in a week. If you don't have enough spermidine, your cell has no idea where autophagy is in your DNA and it will not trigger autophagy. The reason I'm saying that it's more important than NAD as a, as a material, as, as an ingredient is because your body has to have it in order to, to access the, the function that we're looking for again, whereas nad, you can maybe supplement, you can maybe have it iv, anything like that. Your skin needs to get it externally. And there are very cool studies showing that it affects anything from collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid production to even your skin microbiome, even your skin barrier. So it's, it's, it's incredible as far as like and ingredients. So these are the two ingredients you need to tango. And so it's like the energy to maintain that city and the cleanup crew that makes sure that city doesn't get like clogged with junk. And when new buildings are built you take out all the, all the building material that's been used, all of that obviously frees up the city to function correctly. So these are the two things. Honorable mention to copper peptides. Which are.
Dr. Amy
I love copper peptides. I want you to more than honorable mention them because they do so much.
Amitay Eshel
They do do so much. The reason I honorable mentioned them it's because I'll tell you a secret. No one knows how to like no manufacturer of copper peptides has any idea how to actually formulate with them. So every company actually needs to kind of find their way to formulate with copper peptides effectively. And no company obviously shares what they're doing with other companies, ourselves included.
Dr. Amy
Right, right, exactly. Yeah.
Amitay Eshel
So although there are beautiful evidence, as I call in the wild, you know, as studies showing how it affects cells etc is formulations, there, there is no footing that anyone can kind of grasp. So even though they're very powerful, I think if someone is very interested in copper peptides, they should probably inject them.
Dr. Amy
Okay, that's what I was going to ask you. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Amitay Eshel
And rather than topically, rather than topically or in conjunction with topically, we feel we have good complex of peptides that support the ushering of copper peptides into the cells and we see great results with that. But, but the reason, but again, I think since I'm trying to paint with broad strokes and give people alternatives to not only our products specifically, I can't recommend, even though it's an ingredient, I can't recommend that ingredient across the board because most people are going to buy something that is actually not functioning correctly. So what copper peptides really do is they are much less elegant as far as the story behind them. It's not like they're. We can't tell a story of a city or whatever. They just go ahead and signal yourselves, hey, create more collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. That's what they do. Peptide is a, is a, is a code, like a computer code for your cells. Okay. So that's just a code. I'm writing code. Hey, create this. So we need to make sure it survives, gets to the right place. Read by the, in air quotes like the right person. Right. That, that, that, that instruction needs to go to the fact collagen factory and get to the person that is in charge for producing more collagen. If the, if the janitor is going to read it, it's going to throw it to the garbage, if you would. So we need to get it to the right guy. And that is when magic is going to happen. Where you see magic happening continuously is if there is inflammation in the skin, because then the factory is more primed to receive those signals. So when there is inflammation, when there is injury, everyone, the factory like, hey, did anyone hear a word about collagen production? Hey, did you know? So that way, that way. It's when we do microneedling, any type of, like any type of recovery that we're inducing copper peptides are going to shine there. No pun intended. But in general, there is a good supportive ingredient. And talking about supportive ingredient are mineral bound vitamin C. So ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid is a synthetic vitamin C that no one should be using. It's actually pro aging. It actually ages you, as we've learned in the last two, three years. But magnesium, ascorbyl phosphate, or what we call math, vitamin C. Tha versions that are stabilized versions of vitamin C are very important because vitamin C's main role is supporting collagen production. It's actually a, a necessary ingredient in collagen production. Other things that we're expecting vitamin C to do, forget about it. There are much better ingredients. Brightening, smiting, whatever. It's not that great of an ingredient.
Dr. Amy
Are you dealing with mold, heavy metals, hormone disruptors, or other toxins? Pretty much. We all are. So I have a simple solution. You want to take a Humic mineral complex. Humic is a powerful absorbent. It travels through your system and attracts toxins like a little magnet. And it binds them and then neutralizes them and carries them out of your system for good. A 2023 study found that humic binds seven to 10 times more toxins than activated charcoal. And I know y' all are taking that thinking that it's a miracle binder. It's not. Humic is one of the most effective detoxifiers in the world. So if you are struggling to detox from or you're just wanting to get this stuff out of your body, Heavy metals, mold, mycotoxins, organic pollutants, hormone disruptors, or pesticides like glyphosate that sprayed everywhere. Try taking Humic. You'll feel it working within days. And hey, it's even good for hangovers. FYI, alcohol, another toxin. So my favorite humic complex is micro boost from beam minerals. It's a concentrated liquid. So all you do is take a shot of it every morning. That's what I do. I put it by my coffee. As I'm making my coffee, I look up, there it is. Boom. Take a shot. Micro Boost tastes like water, so you can even put it in your coffee and it starts working within minutes. It's simple and effective. It's the best way to detox fast. And I have a special discount for my listeners. So if you want to get rid of toxins for good, you're going to head to beamminerals.com and use the code Dr. Amy at checkout for 20 off your first order. So that is B E A M M I N E R A L S beam like as in a light beam. BeamMinerals.com use the code Dr. Amy D R A M I E at checkout for 20% off your first order. Okay, this is interesting because I used to piggybacking on what you just said. I would always break out when I would use somebody else's vitamin C. And you know, with that vitamin C that it's orange and it smells and it goes rancid over time. Anytime I would put that on my skin, I would break out in little tiny, it's almost like it was so irritating. And retinol's the same way. Your retinol is the only retinol I can use. Retinol and vitamin C would irritate me to the point where I would get these little white reaction bumps.
Amitay Eshel
So first of all, it's funny that you're saying vitamin C that's orange smells and goes rancid. Eventually you are correct. Aside from one thing that you said, the fact that it has a color and that you smell anything means that it already has gone rancid.
Dr. Amy
Oh, okay then.
Amitay Eshel
So that makes a lot of sense. So if you bought a pristine vitamin C serum that is based on ascorbic acid, what you're going to get is a colorless, odorless material. And sometimes through the bottle, it's going to change color, become yellow or brown and it's going to have a smell. And the issue is in nature, vitamin C is a type of an orb that has inside of it some minerals and other factors, enzymes. And a long time ago, 30, 40 years ago, what we did was we said, hey, these are not vitamin C. We have names for them. That's what vitamin C isn't. What vitamin C is, is the outer layer is that actual orb and that is ascorbic acid. So synthetically, people started making only that it's cheaper. It's, it's, it's easier to introduce in higher percentages, but it doesn't exist in nature. And it actually drives a type of cellular death that is called ferreptosis which is. Which it excites iron atoms and, and actually damages your DNA and kills your cells. So I highly recommend to stay away from ascorbic acid. But we do want more vitamin C in our skin, so we need to have it very, very close to how it is in nature. And those are mineral bound. So same thing goes for supplements. For example, Quicksilver Scientific, for example, they have sodium ascorbate that they use. Some companies like Pure C uses calcium ascorbate, I believe. So that, that relationship between something that says ascorb and whatever the, the, the ending is there, that's the signifying vitamin C and, and some kind of. We expect to hear a mineral next to it. That's going to be your magic whatever.
Dr. Amy
Okay, so it should be a mineral plus exorbate.
Amitay Eshel
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dr. Amy
So you have the thd. Exorbate.
Amitay Eshel
Yeah, thda. THDA or th. Th. Ascorbate or map, which is magnesium. A score bowl, phosphates. These are the two versions that we use because they're more effective in skin care. But they're not the only ones. So these are to me, the four ingredients that are kind of hero ingredients within the, within the longevity game. We also really like resveratrol because of, because of its relationship with sirtuins. Topically, not in supplementation, obviously it got a bad rap, but for the skin, it has incredible results. So these are kind of. This is, this, this is kind of my cheat sheet, if anyone's interested in, in, in specific ingredients.
Dr. Amy
No, I love this because it all ties in to why we need these different ingredients to do different things in our skin. And especially going back to the spermidine and, and the NAD and what that does with hypothyroid patients, they tend. Or we, I'll say we, because I'm in that camp, tend to have a slower cell turnover rate now, especially if you're not optimized. Once you get your thyroid optimized, then, you know, just age in general will cause your skin to more slowly turn over the, the cellular production. So what ends up happening, especially in thyroid disease, is that we'll get this really like, almost like a dry ruddiness to our skin. And it's not dry in the fact that it's like flaking dry, although it could be, but it's almost like this dullness where you feel like, oh, if I could just sandpaper off this top layer, that would be fantastic and maybe there'd be beautiful skin underneath. And of course there are lasers out there that do that. But not everybody wants to go through that and have the downtime and have their face lasered off or pay the money. Am I, am I correct in thinking with the spermidine and with the nad, we are increasing our cell turnover rate to basically get rid of that dull stuff on top?
Amitay Eshel
Yes, yeah, yes and yes. So first of all, you're doing that. So in general, what these two ingredients. So spermidine actually does it directly. Spermidine, I call it, like if you think of it's more of a chimney than a broom and a broom in a garbage. Right. Why am I saying that? It's because a chimney doesn't only take out the yucky material, but it also stokes the flames. And we see it in many, in many scenarios where we are improving or we're removing waste from cells. What ends up happening is cells kind of, it ramps up their activity. That's the first thing. NAD does it a little bit indirectly, but it does it beautifully because Nadia allows your cells, your enzymes in your cells that are called sirtuins and parps, allows them to go back and correct DNA damage or DNA misinformation, which means that the information of how to be a youthful cell is now more coherent, it's more vibrant, it's more inviting for the cell to interact with. So your cells now believe that they are younger. And with, with that belief, they go ahead and they split more. They are willing to make more mistakes, which is, which is what's, that's what happens when cells turn over. They are exposing themselves to mistakes because they know that they have the ability to correct those mistakes on a higher percentage level. And in aging in general, one of the things that we're hardwired to do when we get older is minimize mistakes. It's not going ahead and correcting mistakes, it's minimizing the prevalence of mistakes and lowering metabolism inside your cell. Cellular turnover, whatever that is, is one of the cheat sheets of the body on how to minimize mistakes. That is why animals in general with higher metabolism die fast, because they accumulate mistakes. So that's part of the reason that ozempic or whatever, GFP1 agonists have some longevity benefits because they lower metabolism. So, or rapamycin or metformin, whatever we want to go into. One of the effects there is the minimizing of mistakes. And when we allow, when we have the tools for repair of mistakes, plus stimulation for renewal, we get kind of a source code to better looking skin, to younger functioning skin. Another thing that you will experience is estrogen decline. Estrogen is directly involved with collagen production in women, by the way, testosterone as well. But, but that is less consistent as far as like hormonal decline with age. So some women would experience that. Some, some won't. But estrogen, when it lowers with age, collagen production lowers as well. And one of the things that we can do to, obviously we want to optimize hormones. That's number one. But one of the things that we can do to try to offset that is load up with, with, with NAD and spermidine because they will directly make your cells turn over faster and create more, More collagen.
Dr. Amy
Yeah, that's exactly what we want to do. That's beautiful.
Amitay Eshel
So I remembered one thing I wanted to say.
Dr. Amy
Yeah.
Amitay Eshel
You said, yes, you know, there are lasers that will do that. And it's a point I forgot to say. Even in the last point I was making. Let's say, you know what I said about resilience and stuff like that. It, although very true. Even if someone is, you know, 45, 55, 65, 75, whatever that is, and they're saying, hey, this guy is talking about resilience. And past that point, I want to get the best results now I want to do the lasers. I want to do the. Whatever. You are going to respond, your skin is going to respond to that stimulation to that laser at the age of functional age, the biological age it is currently. So if your skin is at the state that it is that we try to schluff off, the, the extra, the extra layer on top, we feel like it's not elastic, we feel it's droopy, we feel it's dull. Whatever you are seeing, this is a mirror of its biological age. It is going to respond to the stimuli of a laser or microneedling or ipl, whatever you are doing as a X year old, biologically X year old skin. One of our missions, when we work with professionals, and now we work with over 200 professionals here in the United States alone, it's to explain to them that whatever they are drawn to do to that patient in clinic, as far as like in clinic procedures, we want to prejuvenate that client. We want them to have at least 30 days, if not 60 or 90 days on young Goose products before you do any heavy stimulation to that skin.
Dr. Amy
Yep.
Amitay Eshel
Because two things are going to happen. Either the client is going to be very upset because they're not going to get the result. That's most of the time. And that's why things like CO2 lasers got a bad rapid. And the second thing that that is going to happen is that you're going to create actually an older skin biologically because you're stimulating renewal, you're forcing those mistakes to happen and the skin doesn't have the reservoirs to actually fix those mistakes. And that is going to happen. And that's why people are undergoing things like Morpheus 8 all therapy, Kybella, softwave, whatever that may be, wave based tightening devices. And then you see the top surgeons in the, in the country going ahead and saying these devices are ruining my, my plastic surgery results. And that is very, very common, very viral online right now. The reason is your, your skin had just created Scottish. It's like hey, I can't deal with, with that stimulation. I'm just going to go ahead and deposit scar tissue over here. I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to sweep things under the carpets, right. I'm just going to scar over here because I can't rejuvenate here. And that is because I am 65 years old and you're asking me to turn over like a 25 year old.
Dr. Amy
Yes, that makes sense. Right? So literally prep your skin before you go in to do lasers or any other anti aging treatment because it'll actually respond better.
Amitay Eshel
That makes complete actually, it will actually respond period.
Dr. Amy
Yes. Yeah.
Amitay Eshel
Yeah.
Dr. Amy
Well now with the time we have left I want to go over just some routines because when somebody goes to young goose.com there is so much to choose from. I of course have used it all but I'm not going to tell everybody to go ahead and get every single product and just start because it'll be overwhelmed. So let's go over, tell me what your optimal routine would be for that perimenopause menopausal woman. What would you have her do?
Amitay Eshel
So here's what I would do if I were a person that is dealing with, that is trying to really kind of deal with many fires that are going on at once is my skincare routine would be covering all of the longevity bases and in trying to, again in trying to get many like Swiss army knife type products and then if they have a specific issue that I want to target at a specific time, I will choose a targeted treatment for that specific issue. That is my main issue. So how does it look like cleanser? We have one cleanser because we, we believe most people would need that one cleanser and that's our adaptogenic cleanser. It also boosts NAD through targeting some of those ingredients that over, over time some enzymes that over time lower your nad. So that's our adaptogenic cleanser. And if people are used to using a toner, what they could use instead of our in our routine is a product called Amplifying Essence. And, and the Amplifying Essence is kind of a take on a toner that would fix things like hydration and boost your NAD levels as well. But really, when I say fix hydration, it's really cool because they actually upregulates hydration genes. And you have 11 days carryover. So let's say you apply that once your skin now is more hydrated for 11 days, naturally it creates hydration. It holds on to hydration better for 11 days. So it's a good product if you're interested in hydration. And then the hero product, in my opinion, in a routine like that would be our Youth Reset serum, because so version 2 is the version we have now. You can't have another version. That's the only version we offer right now. So Youth Reset is really cool because it covers the entire 12 hallmarks of Asian. So it has all the ingredients that we spoke about today. And that's very important because what is the difference between a serum and a moisturizer? Moisturizer, which we're going to touch on in a second, has the hover very close to the skin surface because its main job is to make sure you don't lose moisture to the environment. So most of the active ingredients, although very important, won't be able to penetrate extremely deeply or statistically there is going to be less of them penetrate deeply because they're suspended here in a material that needs to stay close to the surface. So they're going to benefit layers that are more close to the surface. Although important, when we talk about that menopausal woman that really wants to create fundamental cellular changes in their skin, we want to penetrate deep, at least like a, you know, 0.5 to 1.5 millimeters into the skin. And that is only very specific serums with delivery systems going to do. And that's our Youth Reset serum. It has the NAD precursors, actually makes you make more nad, et cetera. And then Youth Daily Moisturizer would be the moisturizer of choice. As I said before about ingredients like NAD and spermidine, they're actually extremely important for your top layers of the skin, including your skin microbiome, so they breathe a more youthful colony on your skin, which has direct ties to things like collagen production. So Youth Daily Moisturizer is the moisturizer I would recommend. And you are going to see changes in hydration in that, that layer on the top of the skin that you feel like you want to scrub off. All of those things are going to be because of the daily moisturizer. And I highly recommend using our bio shield SPF 40. Not only because best ever.
Dr. Amy
Like literally the best ever. And how I'll use it too, just real quick is I'll mix it with my foundation. So I'll put the layer on and then that makes your makeup go on better. And then I'll squirt a little bit of that bioshield in with my foundation to make it really cool, creamy and almost like that glow, you know, it gives you that glow.
Amitay Eshel
Yeah. And the cool thing is, the reason I like what you said right now is that this is not only designed to go on when you go outside. So most people, if you live in a western world, you are aging more due to other environmental factors that have nothing to do with uv. Artificial blue light, emf, pollution, heavy metals, plastics, all of those things adhere to your skin. They build up on your skin, especially pollution and artificial blue light. You're bombarded with them and emf, by the way, you're bombarded with them and they breed oxidative stress and they damage DNA and they, they weaken your mitochondria. And when we designed the sunblock, we thought, we stopped and we said to ourselves, we're longevity oriented where we read all these studies. Why not make a product that would block or defend against all of those things and defend from UV radiation? So that is, that is our BioShield SPF 40. So you should, you should use it also when you're indoors. You should also use it if you are going with your friends to party and it's 11 o' clock at night, you should still use it because you're going to, you're going to get the pollution. I don't know where you party. I assume it's anyway. And at night, instead of that BioShield SPF 40, assuming you're not going clubbing, is the hyperbaric mask.
Dr. Amy
Oh, I love that too.
Amitay Eshel
And it's, it's, it's a, it's a, it's a really cool gel that we developed mainly to have your mitochondria. You make more energy to use more oxygen, but really it mimics one to one, the same benefits that would happen to your skin when you, you're in a hyperbaric chamber. So you apply it over your moisturizer.
Dr. Amy
Mm.
Amitay Eshel
And you go to sleep with it. It's not gonna stand the pillow. Anything like that goes over and by morning you will look incredible.
Dr. Amy
You look younger in the morning. Like, I'm not kidding you. You look younger in the morning.
Amitay Eshel
Yeah, it's, it's, it's an incredible product that, that it's been such a shocker that it's, it was such a nerdy product to begin with. It was very esoteric when we started. No one even knew what we're talking about. But it caught fire because it's such a quick turnaround as far as results. And we immediately. The version again that people are using now is like version three. We immediately started like, hey, that's so cool. What can we add? So new. A new version in the pipeline is going to come out at a certain point. Amy is going to try a prototype of its own. So that's like, that's a routine, right? That's a full routine. Some products are going to last two months. Some products are going to, you really only need to get them a couple of times a year, like Hyperbaric Mask. What I have been adding recently to it and it's been a game changer not only for me, but for thousands of people that have reached out and were just shocked by how good this product is, is the Ladder serum. And ladder stands for light activated DNA repair. And what it is, it's a product that you use, you apply like a couple minutes before you do red light therapy. If you don't have red light therapy, you could go into sunlight and get it activated. It's not as strong, but that goes after specifically UV DNA damage in your DNA. UV fuses, parts of your DNA and it's like a fused disc in your back. It, it disrupts everything and it climbs around and, and it becomes not great. So it actually go ahead and goes ahead and breaks down that fusion and repairs that part. It also has other things. It has the NAD precursors, the spermidine, but really it all act, all activated by red light. And the results we're getting from it, from anything from wrinkles, laxity and pigmentation is incredible. So that I've been adding. It's not part of a daily routine. It's only when I use red light therapy, I wash my face, I make sure my skin is clean by the latter serum, go in front of the red light and then I'll apply the routine afterwards.
Dr. Amy
Do the routine after. Yeah, no, that's exactly what I'm doing too. Absolutely. No, I love this. That's very simplistic. You broke it down so nicely. For the listeners. And then I'm going to add this too. So number one, keep listening. We have a discount code for y' all if you want to try. I'm going to bring Amitay into the just fix your thyroid Facebook group in July, and we're going to do a nice deep dive into Q and A. They all work together. And then from there it's just like supplementation from there. Then you start getting really strategic and go, you know what? I do red light therapy three times a week. I'm going to pull in the latter serum or whatever it might be. So I love that that you just broke it down for us so nicely.
Amitay Eshel

Podcast Summary: The Thyroid Fixer Episode 533 – THE BEST Skincare Routine for Midlife Women: How to Have the Skin of a 25-Year-Old
Release Date: June 13, 2025
In episode 533 of The Thyroid Fixer, host Dr. Amie Hornaman delves into the intricate relationship between thyroid health, hormonal balance, and skincare for midlife women. This episode features a special guest, Amitay Eshel, CEO of Young Goose, a skincare company renowned for its effective formulations targeting aging and skin health.
Dr. Amie begins by emphasizing that skin health is not merely a cosmetic concern but a reflection of internal bodily functions, including mitochondrial health, hormone balance, and oxidative stress. She posits that rapid aging signs, such as sudden increases in wrinkles or dullness, are often indicators of underlying hormonal shifts, particularly during perimenopause and menopause.
Amitay Eshel underscores the critical importance of ingredient quality in skincare products. He draws parallels between the meticulous selection of food ingredients and skincare components, highlighting that unlike food, skincare lacks standardized quality certifications like the USDA. Eshel states, “[...] there is a more stark discrepancy between different companies and the quality of the ingredients that we use” (11:37).
Eshel elaborates on how skin acts as a highway for environmental stressors, conveying information about toxins and stress to the brain. He explains that the skin’s ability to detoxify and maintain mitochondrial function is crucial for overall health. Damage to these systems can lead to increased inflammation and accelerated aging.
During hormonal transitions in a woman’s life, especially in the late 40s and early 50s, significant changes occur that affect skin elasticity and collagen production. Eshel notes, “[...] perimenopause and menopause are tied to challenges that are associated with hormonal changes, including thyroid function” (16:00). He emphasizes that addressing these hormonal imbalances is paramount before focusing solely on topical skincare solutions.
A substantial portion of the discussion centers around two pivotal ingredients: NAD (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) and Spermidine.
NAD is described as the cellular currency for repair, crucial for maintaining mitochondrial function and DNA integrity. Eshel explains, “NAD allows your cells...correct DNA damage...and maintain youthful cell function” (20:15).
Spermidine is highlighted for its role in autophagy, the process of cellular cleanup and renewal. Eshel emphasizes its importance, stating, “Spermidine is what we need in our body to have autophagy...necessary for cellular cleanup” (23:05). He further clarifies that spermidine is more challenging to supplement effectively compared to NAD.
Eshel provides insights into the use of copper peptides and vitamin C in skincare:
Copper Peptides: While potent in signaling collagen and elastin production, Eshel points out formulation challenges, noting, “No manufacturer of copper peptides has any idea how to actually formulate with them” (26:44). He suggests that without proper formulation, these peptides may not deliver the desired benefits.
Vitamin C: Eshel warns against using synthetic ascorbic acid, which can be pro-aging and damaging to cells. Instead, he recommends mineral-bound vitamin C variants like magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, which are more effective and safer for skin health (33:14).
Amitay outlines an optimal skincare routine tailored for perimenopausal and menopausal women:
Advanced Treatments:
Eshel advises a phased approach, recommending clients use Young Goose products for 30 to 90 days before undergoing any intensive in-clinic skin treatments like lasers or microneedling. This preparation ensures that the skin is resilient enough to respond positively to such interventions.
Dr. Amie connects the skincare regimen with thyroid optimization, explaining that thyroid dysfunction can slow cell turnover, leading to dullness and dryness. By optimizing thyroid function and employing the discussed skincare strategies, midlife women can accelerate cell renewal, enhancing skin vitality and reducing signs of aging.
Dr. Amie concludes by encouraging listeners to implement the recommended skincare routines and invites them to join the "Just Fix Your Thyroid" Facebook group. In July, Amitay Eshel will join the group for an interactive Q&A session, allowing listeners to delve deeper into personalized skincare and thyroid health questions.
Listeners are reminded to use the discount code "Dr. Amy" on Young Goose's website for exclusive offers, ensuring access to the discussed skincare solutions at a reduced price.
