Well, guys, tonight President Biden delivered his farewell address from the Oval Office. After the speech, Biden embraced his two great loves, Jill and the teleprompter. You know, it was a big night. Biden delivered an emotional farewell to the country. While the country was busy delivering an emotional farewell to TikTok. In his speech, Biden talked about some of his biggest accomplishments, like helping Americans recover from the pandemic, creating 16 million new jobs, and somehow doing the impossible. He fell upstairs. How would you. That's. How do you do that? Amazing. Yep. Biden said he gave everything he had to America over his 50 year career. I think that's what Biden said. It was hard to hear cuz Trump was having vending machines installed in the Oval Office. This is all Doritos. Make sure the bear claws are on the bottom row. Biden also took some time to discuss the biggest challenges that are still facing our country. Then he took a long pause and said, anyway, good luck with all that and but this is sweet. Biden told the country, even though my term as president may be over, the smell of Werther's originals and Bengay I've left behind will linger forever. Isn't that sweet? That doesn't help. Then at the end of his speech, Biden was joined by Vice President Harris where they sang a stirring rendition of Defying Gravity. You guys see this? I mean, I think that's what I hope we do on our show really well, which is we kind of look for the light. You know, you can get your news everywhere and it can be so discouraging and sad. And you know, we cover the news. Our reporters have been out there. These firefighters are amazing, working 48 hour shifts. It's incredible, these first responders. But you know what? We're trying to also our viewers are so generous. They always want to reach their arms around. And so we're trying to tell them, okay, this is a reputable place. This is how you can help. This is where there's needs. And I think that's one Thing that the Today show does really well. We look for the light.

Yeah, no, we highlighted two days ago. There's this. This teacher in one of our stories who talked a fair amount about how much he just missed his students. Like, he hadn't been able to talk to his students since the fire started, and he had been texting them, and he broke down in tears. And by the way, here's a teacher who was worried about his students. The teacher himself had lost his home, had lost all of his belongings, but.

He cared about his students, and he wanted to keep in touch and checking in, and that was just moving. It was great. But you did a great job with that. Obviously. I've known you guys for a while now, but this is a big deal. I saw your family came in on Monday. Welcoming you into now is because we're in the Craig era.

And I look over at him. He's crying.

It was beautiful.

Oh, my God. No way. That's wild. You have a beautiful family. I ran into Crai. We went to vacation at the same hotel at one time, and I ran into you. And I go, craig, what's up, man? It's Jimmy. And we ended up just hanging out. We basically went on vacation for a week.

But by the way, tell the other part of that story. So we were, like, on the beach, and my wife Lindsey was like, that looks like Jimmy Fallon. I was like, jimmy's not here. Lo and behold, like, two minutes later, he comes barreling over. He's like, crag. This guy for, like, days is playing basketball with my son and my daughter.

Yeah. I get pushed to the kids table. You take care of it. Dude, your kids are so cute. Del's a little athlete. They're both athletes.

[Craig Melvin]

You paid me a high compliment while I was there. You said one day you're like, you're doing it right. Your son made a hook shot, and he's like, Kareem Abdul Jabbar. And Jimmy was like, you taught him who Kareem Abdul Jabbar is.

Yeah, like, yeah, exactly. He should know who that is. Yeah. I was here with you guys on Hoda's last day. The Hodabration.

We had a giant big party, and gosh, we love. And it was. I was about to go on and do a bit and say goodbye to Hoda, and as it was going on, you were leaving. I want to say we had just.

Done a little surprise for the fourth hour. We were all crying. It was 10am I think I had a. Like, I was out.

It was right. But I was leaving. And you guys, you go, all right. And I heard Craig, you go, I'll see you on Monday. And you go, here we go. Started the Craig era. It's happening or something like that. And it was such a moment. And I was like, oh, my God, I can't believe I was here for that moment. It was just like kind of a historic thing. And someone had taken a photo, I think, on your team, and here's you giving your hug, saying, I'll see you on Monday. And then me ruining the moment. I'm like, huh?

I may be talking to Hoda more than ever. I mean, we've talked every single day. She actually, like, got up earlier than me on Monday. You know, Hoda wakes up at 3am on Saturday, but she's doing great. You know, we FaceTime with her. But she. It's funny, like, you know, it's a new era. We gave her. Her this beautiful goodbye, but it's a new era. It's the Craig era. And we go in, we sit on the set, and there are these, like, trays. You probably have one. It's like, oh, it might have, like, a mint or whatever it is. We realized that all of the trays, they were all Hoda's stuff. And it was like, one Contact and, like, expired. Like, bean dip and, like, belly button lint and all this stuff. And I was like, you know, Craig, he's like, oh, I thought this was. I go, none of this is mine. Not on her side. Not on my side. So I. We just threw Right Eye center video. I was like, honey, we miss you, but here's what's happening.

We've stayed on it long enough. So my mother, you know, she was the first in the family to go to college, grew up in the projects, and she went out of her way. She was a schoolteacher, and she wanted to expose us to things that she hadn't been exposed to.

So I took magic classes. I did, like, oratorical contests. And at one point, she came home and she announced that I would be playing the violin.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Craig Melvin]

No one in the family had played the violin. No, she certainly hadn't played the violin. I'd never seen anybody play a Violin.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah, I think it's great. And so I just like that combo with the turtleneck. That's what I know. I think.

Well, she also clearly dressed me. She dressed me until the eighth grade. She didn't want us to hang out with girls, Jimmy. That was her way.

That was her way of doing it.

By the way, the control room has that basically on speed dial. It's like it's always ready. You just have to think about it and suddenly it's there.

I think the last year has been emotional. It's been a real roller coaster. And there's a huge gap, I think, in my life from that show. But it's been incredible. You know, the friends I've made, the cast, the crew, it's like family. It is like family, as you know. You know, it's like you spend all your time with these people and how do you, how do you end something like that.

Yeah. Yeah. It's wild. But you, you, did you take anything by the Way.

It was incredible. Honestly, we don't get a lot of these big shows in Scotland. We normally have to go to London. We have to go to bigger cities. And honestly, to see all the Swifties out there, it was really. It was a really special moment with the whole cast. It was towards the end of our filming the last season, so. So we were singing along and dancing pretty hard.

Yeah. You posted a fun video of you from the set of Outlander before you went. Take a look at this.

We're gonna go see Taylor Swift play in Scotland. And I think most of the cast is going. She obviously doesn't know this, but when she comes to Scotland and she sees me in the audience, she's gonna forget all about him and fall for a man in a ginger wig.

That's funny. Here's a picture of you and John Hunter Bell at the Eras tour. Did you bring your own bracelets? No.

[Sam Heughan]

I mean, the Swifties are so generous and they made all of these and we were getting given them all night, and it was just such an incredible atmosphere. And I still have the wig. Taylor, if you're watching.

Yeah. Who will wear the wig? You did something pretty cool, too. You went to Nepal I did, yeah.

[Sam Heughan]

Yeah.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Everest.

[Sam Heughan]

Yeah, I did. Yeah. So I always been obsessed with Everest and always wanted to go, and it felt like a great way to mark the ending of Outlander. And I did this amazing hike that's not been done before along the Hunkukola Valley, up 20,000ft, over the Ampalaza Pass, and then we rappelled into the Khumbu Valley.

Whoa.

[Sam Heughan]

I know, right? I mean, it was horrific.

[Jimmy Fallon]

What is it? Here's you repelling. What's the altitude? What's that light?

[Sam Heughan]

That's what I'm saying. It was horrific because we were up at 20,000ft, and I mean, you can't breathe, you're being sick, you've got a headache, you can't sleep.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah, it sounds fun.

[Sam Heughan]

I recommend it for everyone.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah. Glad you brought pictures. But you said the sunset was one of the most beautiful sunsets you've ever seen.

[Sam Heughan]

It was utterly incredible. We hiked up to Kala Pattar, which is a mountain opposite. This is Nupsea, which is next to Everest. I did get a photo of Everest. I promise. It's like. Oh, but this is here.

It's gorgeous. Yeah.

And we watched the sunset, and it was stunning, but also very, very cold. So we toasted it with some whiskey, and it was amazing.
