It came from a series of different wordplay kind of things happening where I know that this is my fifth album, and so five is a Roman numeral V. And then that turned into. I was like, that's not enough for me. And so I wanted it to be, like a French word for life. It turned into vie and then.

Vie, yeah. Oh, my goodness. La vie en rose.

And this is. You experimented with, like, kind of inspired by a lot of 80s stuff. Is your.

[Doja Cat]

Yeah, yeah. I took a turn into. I was making some stuff before that in France, and then I was like, I want to make 80s stuff out of nowhere. And. Yeah, it started with Y2K and Curtis McKenzie, and I was, you know, getting beats from them, and then I. I feel like I needed more to it. And Jack added a lot of incredible instruments and, you know, sax players and things like that. Amazing stuff onto the record.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Why the 80s, though? You weren't born.

[Doja Cat]

Because something about, like, the tail end of. I was born in 95, obviously, or not, or. Yeah. I look older, but I.

[Jimmy Fallon]

What are you talking about? You're a baby.

[Doja Cat]

Well, so I, like. I feel like being in school, like, or being with. Going, you know, going with your parents to work or things like that. Like, the buildings were the same in the 90s as they were in the 80s. Being in, like, in school and all the old toys and, like, preschool, like that, just something about that stuck into my head. I mean, we all kind of think of, like, nostalgia in a similar way. If, you know, you're as old as I am or whatever. There's this thing called Liminal Space and Dreamcore, and it kind of attaches itself to that concept, but it's sort of piggybacking off of the 80s, and it's like a nostalgia thing.

[Drewski]

Does it make it.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Does it make you happy?

[Doja Cat]

It makes you almost feel sad.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Okay.

[Doja Cat]

But it also makes you feel like, happiness, like you're escaping. There's an escapism to it.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Is there any certain artists from the 80s that you. That you pull from?

[Doja Cat]

Yeah, I mean, I love. I'm very inspired by Janet. I'm very inspired by. I mean, Michael and Prince. And there's some of my other favorites like Gary Newman. And I didn't really pull from Bauhaus, but I love Bauhaus. Nina Hagen is a big one for me. Fun and so, yeah, that's a great record.

And you're actually, you're on. You're gonna worldwide tour. You're gonna go on a worldwide tour called tour Mavi. Now, what can fans expect when they come to a Doja Cat show?

Lots of singing and dancing.

I mean, and with this kind of project that I'm doing now, it's different than everything else and I want to push my voice in a different way. So a lot of like vocalizing in a way that you haven't maybe heard before and sort of pushing my body in certain ways. I'm working with like a mic chord. That's like part of my prop.

Yeah, we had about less than 200, 250 fans a night. And like. Like, both of our careers took off after that, and it just has been amazing.

Well, you know, that's my boy, man. He's been going through some stuff. He needed somebody to help him go through that stuff, so I Offered him Black and Mild. So that's what I really felt like. I felt like that might have been the best option. That's how I got through my. So I'm like, all right, if there's anything. Yeah, you've been there. You know how to. You know how it goes. Yeah. So, you know. Yeah, that album. He's a really good friend of mine. We were actually on the way to the airport and he called me and was like, yo, I hope you haven't left la. And I'm like, yo, I'm literally, like, about to pull in. Like, we were at the gate thing, like, about to get dropped off, and, yeah, we turned around immediately. I mean, it's Justin Bieber. What are we talking about here? So I went back to the studio and he said, I wanted you to.

Yeah, man. It was a therapy session. You know, he already had the clip going viral of the standing on business stuff. So I was like, first of all, I had to address that. I was like, yo, what are you doing talking like that? Yeah, like, that was the first thing I had to address. And then the second thing, you know, Black and Miles helped me get through a lot, so I was like, hey, you should just smoke one of these and he'll figure it out. Yeah. Good guy, though. Good guy.

So, like, there's a point in the stream where we're all just like laid out like this.

You might see me come out like Usher in the red coat.
