From Studio 6P @Rockefellers that are in the heart of New York City, it's the Tonight show. Starring Jimmy Fallon. Tonight joins Jimmy and his guest, Ed Sheeran, Judy Bakwa. And featuring STEVE Legendary Ruth Cruz211.5. And now, here he is, Jimmy Fallon. Ah, it's a crowd. Thank you very much. Enjoy yourself. Welcome, everybody. Everybody have fun. Welcome to the Tonight Show. You're here. Come in. Thank you for watching at home. Well, guys, the White House is doing damage control over the military group chat scandal. And today, the reporter who broke the story published all these screenshots from the chat. Yep, the most humiliating part of the group chat is that some of the text messages were green. Who wasn't Android? You know it's Vance. You know it's Vance. It all started when Trump's team accidentally added a report about a military strike. It was so sloppy, even drunk kids on spring break were like, get it together, dudes. Come on, man. What a mess. Who knew we'd miss the more competent days of Omarosa and Rudy Giuliani. Yeah. Say what you want, this never would have happened under Biden. For starters, he didn't know how to text, so, I mean, that would never have happened. Never have happened. I don't think that is. Meanwhile, today, Trump held an emergency meeting to decide what scandal he's going to introduce to make this scandal go away. Oh, and get this. Trump just announced that Elon Musk will be in charge of investigating the group chat leak. That's how you know it's serious. Trump is bringing in his boss. So, I mean, this is serious business. Serious business. That's right. The full transcript came out today. And I saw that some of the officials were actually using emojis. This is true. Like when the Defense Secretary texted war plans, the National Security Advisor replied with this. That's real Fist Fist America fire emoji. Yeah, check out some of the other emojis they use. For instance, someone sent robot clock car flames. That means Elon's gonna be late because his Tesla exploded. You see what I'm saying? I get it. Next. Next. Someone sent tangerine Statue of Liberty, France owls. And that means Trump sold the Statue of Liberty to France and used the money to save Hooters. You gotta save it. It's going away. Here's another. Someone sent the letter U A test tube books building. That means YouTube is the new education department. You go. That's terrible. Terrible. Also, someone sent Jack o'lantern leaf, Green circle shopping cart. That means Trump just added Canada and Greenland to his shopping cart. And finally, someone else sent two people eyes flower. Sick. That means Eric and Don Jr. Can't make eye contact after watching the White Lotus. Well, some more political news. Earlier today, Trump spoke at a White House event honoring Women's History Month. Yep, March is Women's History Month. So of course Trump celebrated it right away on the 26th. I love this month. I love it. Couple days left. Hey, listen to this. I read that Congresswoman Lauren Boebert suggested Republicans could rename D.C. the District of America. Meanwhile, Trump wants to change D.C. to Diet Coke. That could happen. Switching gears, I saw that YouTube is investigating a bug causing low resolution videos for their users. If you've ever tried to watch a video like that, it could be very frustrating here. Now, to tell us more about this is a YouTube executive, Steven Richter. Welcome to the show, Steven. Thank you for being here, Jimmy. So most importantly, do you believe that you've solved the low resolution issue? 100%. Jimmy. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I think it might be happening right now.
Ed Sheeran
Yeah. Okay. There we go.
Jimmy Fallon
There we go. So essentially what happened was we. You seem to be freezing on us now. Am I back? You are.
Ed Sheeran
Okay, well, that feels much.
Jimmy Fallon
Happened again. Sorry, sorry, Sorry about that. So anyway, I kiss llamas on the mouth for fun. Oh, yeah, yeah. Sorry, we only caught a few words there. I. I was talking about our state.
Ed Sheeran
Of the art tech specs.
Jimmy Fallon
I think you said llamas at one point.
Ed Sheeran
Yeah, I think the problem is on.
Jimmy Fallon
Your end, but bottom line is that you. YouTube is committed to making sure this never happens again. Now, something is wrong with your voice. I think something is wrong with your voice. It sounds like you still need to work out some of the kinks.
Ed Sheeran
I kiss.
Jimmy Fallon
I kiss.
Ed Sheeran
I kiss llamas.
Jimmy Fallon
I kiss llamas.
Ed Sheeran
I k. Kiss llamas.
Jimmy Fallon
I kiss llamas. Okay, okay. We should move on now. YouTube executive Terrible. Well, some entertainment news. Marvel just announced the star studded cast of their upcoming movie, Avengers Doomsday. Good deal. Thor will be played by Chris Hemsworth. Ant. Ant man will be played by Paul Rudd. And Dr. Strange will be played by RFK Junior. Some sports news. March Madness continues tomorrow with the sweet 16. It's gonna be awesome. 16 great teams are left. I have to tell you though, I'm not totally up to speed on the team's mascots. They're hard to keep straight. I can help you, Jimmy. Oh, really? Thank you, sir. No problem. Hit it, Quest. Hit it, Stroh. A tiger is a cat and a wild Cat's a cat. And BYU's the cougars. That's another B ball cap. There's Alabama, Crimson Tide, Texas Tech, Red Raiders, Maryland's the Terrapins and Florida's the Gators. And what's a Boilermaker? Oh, the Purdue Boilermakers. Yeah, we'll come back to that. Ole Miss are the Rebels and Dukes, the Blue Devils, Michigan's the Wolverines. They're on another level. The Boilermakers, though. Seriously, Jimmy, it's just a guy that makes boilers. Really? Yes, I googled it. A skilled tradesperson who fabricates, maintains and repairs boilers, tanks and other large pressure valves. Why is Purdue called that? I don't know, Jimmy. I don't know what to tell you. It's okay, sir. How about we finish with the other team so I can get on with the show? That sounds good. Hit it. Spartans, the Razorbacks, the Vols, wise, Purdue, the Boilermakers. We don't know at all. Thank you, sir. So helpful. Thank you. And finally, a new study found that the weight loss drug Wegovy could be linked to increased hair loss. Men are like, how do you want us, ladies? Fat and hairy or skinny and bald? We have a great show. Give it up for the Roots, everybody. I want my people to rock this, bang this music in your speakers as deep as my thoughts. Sit back and I'm a picture, of course. Oh, my goodness. Thank you. Thank you, Roots. What a show we have for you tonight. He's a Grammy winning, multi platinum selling artist whose new single azizam is out April 4. One of the most talented people on earth, Ed Sheeran, is here this evening. Sorry, not yet. Not yet. He's coming out. He's coming. He's getting a standing ovation. Oh, my God. He will be here. He's just not right now. Not right now. No, I'm just telling you. He will be on the show. They're announcing him. Damn. Yeah. Letting you know. Yeah. Also, he's a star who is in the Disney series Doctor who. The new season premieres April 12th. Shuti Gatwa is joining us, everybody. Shuti Gatwa. We do that. Wow. Doctor who. Hey, guys. This is pretty cool. Our friends over at Ford have this service where they can send a technician to your house to work on your car so you don't have to bring it into the dealership. Wow. No, it's called Ford Mobile Service. I was going to tell you more about it, but they just released a commercial that pretty much explains it all. Take a look at this. That's not. No. We'll replace your fluids so you can discover your true calling.
Ed Sheeran
Sasquatch.
Jimmy Fallon
Slap fighting.
Ed Sheeran
Ow.
Jimmy Fallon
No. All right, all right. We get it. Diagnostic, scanning, accessories, installation, powertrain systems analysis. It all saves us time. Can we just go back to doing stuff we did in the beginning? Jimmy Fallon

Jimmy Fallon

We love you. Welcome back to the show.
Ed Sheeran
Nice to be back.
Jimmy Fallon
It is so good to see you. How is the family now? You have two little kids now?
Ed Sheeran
Two daughters. Yeah, two little girls.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh my gosh. Congratulations. How old, are they?
Ed Sheeran
Four and almost three.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh my gosh. Congratulations. You have a new single. Do they like Aziza?
Ed Sheeran
Yep.
Jimmy Fallon
Azizaam what does aziza mean?
Ed Sheeran
It's Farsi for my dear. And I was working with this producer, Ilya, who is Persian, and we were creating a lot of music, and he just suggested we do something within the Persian culture. And, yeah, it's great. We've actually done a full version in Farsi as well, which is quite.
Jimmy Fallon
Really.
Ed Sheeran
Yeah, yeah. It's been cool, man. It's been really cool. I feel like the Persian community has really embraced the song and what we've been doing with it. And I feel very, like, honored to be kind of, like, taken by the hand and shown different things.
Jimmy Fallon
You're doing fun things. Like, surprising. Like, you debuted it in New Orleans.
Ed Sheeran
Yeah, yeah. We did the second line there, which was.
Jimmy Fallon
It's the greatest.
Ed Sheeran
It was so fun, man. It was so fun. I feel like the song itself, obviously, we created it within Persian culture originally, and then as I was doing it, I grew up with a lot of Irish trad music in my household, and I was like, these rhythms and scales are, like, the same as trad music. It's just different instruments. And then when I was in China, I was working with some classical musicians out there, and it was the same sort of thing. So I did a version with some traditional Chinese musicians, some traditional Indian musicians when we were touring there, and then we did some bluegrass musicians in Nashville, trad musicians in Ireland. And then obviously the second line. But it's very much like music is a universal language, even if it is all in a different language. There's, like, this thread that goes through.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, it's a different language, but. Yeah, but we all speak in the same language.
Ed Sheeran
Because it's great. Yeah, it's great being, like, in China. Like, I was there playing this song. No one could speak English. I was speaking through a translator. But then I'd play something and they would play it. Exactly. And it would all. Then you'd sort of gel in. It's really fun.
Jimmy Fallon
You and I did some subway busking this morning.
Ed Sheeran
We did, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
And you won't see it tonight, but you'll see it eventually when we edit it together. But, man, you do a great Pink Pony Club.
Ed Sheeran
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, you're welcome. Very well done.
Ed Sheeran
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
Did your homework on that one.
Ed Sheeran
It did, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
But you've been touring all over the world now. Is the tour almost. Is it coming to an end soon?
Ed Sheeran
This particular tour with this particular stage? But I'm so. I've sort of always toured since I was 16, and I don't plan on, like, stopping. I'm just Doing it smarter. So I'm just like. I do weekends. I do, like, seven months of a year weekends, and then I'm home in school terms, basically. But I think it's just doing it a smarter way. Like, when I was, like, 18, 19, it was every single day of the week. Every. You know, just travel, travel, gig, gig, gig, gig.
Jimmy Fallon
Whereas where you were.
Ed Sheeran
Yeah, whereas now it's more of I have, like, you have a working week, and then I go away for a weekend and do gigs, and then I come back and sort of do it like that.
Jimmy Fallon
And you're also doing different locations that you haven't done before.
Ed Sheeran
Yeah. I think that's the interesting thing about tour, is, like, going to play places that we just went to. I want to get the pronunciation right. Hang Chao in China, which is like two hours from Shanghai. Never been there before. We toured India for the first time. Never been to some of these cities. And I kind of see it. I didn't get to do the, like. You know, when you're 18, you go backpacking and you do all that sort of stuff. So this is my bougie way of doing that, basically.
Jimmy Fallon
And do you get to try out new instruments and get new everywhere and everything? Everywhere?
Ed Sheeran
Yeah, I've kind of. My studio is full of all sorts of instruments from around the world, and it's great to soak up culture. And everyone's always. So I guess when you meet people on a musical level, people have more inviting, I guess, and they want to share their culture and experience and stuff.
Jimmy Fallon
Come on. That's fun. That's fun. It's amazing.
Ed Sheeran
So fun, man. So far, India. India as a spot. Like, India is. What I love about India is every hundred miles, the. The dialect change, the food changes, and, like, it's just the culture shifts. It's such a massive place. So we went all over. In every single place, there was something. Something different. And I'd love to go. Yeah. Huge. Hugely fun.
Jimmy Fallon
Speaking of Shape of youf. Shape of youf is the second most popular song on Spotify.
Ed Sheeran
Mm.
Jimmy Fallon
Out of any song. Not bad. Not too shabby. Uh, I read somewhere that you originally wrote that for Rihanna.
Ed Sheeran
Yeah, Rihanna's like. I think out of any. Any musician, Rihanna has the best taste out of. Out of anyone. She always picks just really, really great songs. So as songwriters, you know, within the songwriting community, you're always writing songs to pitch to Rihanna. Like, every single album that I've ever done, I've always gone right on the side. Let's try and write a song that we can pitch to Rihanna, and it always makes, like, love yourself. Actually, the one I did for Bieber was originally a Rihanna in mind, like, oh, we should do something for her and wait. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
And sometimes almost.
Ed Sheeran
I promise you there'll be so many songwriters out there that their best song came from trying to write a Rihanna song. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
And then you just decided to go, I'm gonna take this one for myself, or I'll try it, or I'll give it a shot, or it's a demo, or. What was it?
Ed Sheeran
Yeah, it's a weird one because even though I wrote it, I didn't really feel like it suited me. And then I changed little bits about it and, like, I don't know, produced it with. It's got a lot of, like, acoustic guitar slaps on it, so it sort of sounds like it would have. I would do it live. And then it suited me a bit more. And I had to get my head around it, though. Cause I very much roast it with. With someone else in mind. But, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Your fans are dying to know what the new album is called. You've been dropping hints, and everyone's kind of guessing what the new album could be called. We can't wait for the album. Could you tell us officially what the album is called?
Ed Sheeran
Yeah, it's called Play. It's called Play.
Jimmy Fallon
It is called Play. It's a great name. I love Play.
Ed Sheeran
Thank you. I had it when I was, like. When I was, like, 18, I had an idea for, like, 10 albums, and it was plus, multiply, divide, subtract, equals, and then play, pause, rewind, fast forward, stop. So I've always had. I wanted to do 10. I'm kind of a bit obsessed with Tarantino, and I heard he was doing 10 films, and he's got his, like, side projects like Grindhouse, and he'll do that. So I've, like. I want to do my 10 and every now and then do a side project here and then. Yeah, but.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, that's so fun. Do you think you actually stop after stop?
Ed Sheeran
Well, I kind of want. I kind of want to make an album for the whole of my life where you put, like, different songs on, and then it's in your will that comes out the day you die. And it's called Eject. I'm not joking. I think imagine. Imagine if. Imagine when McCartney passes away and there's a record that he's made that there's a song from when he's 16. There's a song from when he's 20. There's a song from when He's 30. It'd be fascinating.
Jimmy Fallon
I really.
Ed Sheeran
I'm not saying that I'm like, you've done that.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. But, yeah, I just think.
Ed Sheeran
Just think it'd be cool.
Jimmy Fallon
I don't. I don't want to hear it.
Ed Sheeran
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
If you know what I mean. I don't want to hear it.
Ed Sheeran
There'll be lots of people who are.
Jimmy Fallon
Like, I want you to be around.
Ed Sheeran
There'll be lots of people who are, like, still from beyond the grave.
Jimmy Fallon
You. I want to talk to you about this. You're doing your own pub over here in Massachusetts? Over in Ipswich. Ipswich, Massachusetts. This Friday, in fact.
Ed Sheeran
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
And you'll be there.
Ed Sheeran
Do you know what's interesting about this pub is it will stand for two days. We're building. It's like a full working pub, but.
Jimmy Fallon
If you do it right, it's gonna fall down after the first day.
Ed Sheeran
No, it's full. Like, it's shut it down. Yeah. It's this idea of the music video is basically the build of the pub with everyone locally. And then to get entry to it, you have to go on your old phone and find an old message that means a lot to you or a video that means a lot to you and send it in. And then afterwards, we're going to project them on the walls and stuff. It's going to be cool. We're serving Guinness and, like, tots and it's going to be cool.
Jimmy Fallon
That's fantastic. What is the. Is that basically the meaning of old phone?
Ed Sheeran
Yeah. No, I had a song on my record. You know, I was in that lawsuit a couple of years ago. Yes, I remember that. In the lawsuit, they order you to give up all your old devices. So I handed everything in, but I haven't used. I moved to a tablet in 2015 just on email. And so I switched my phone off 2015 and left it in a box. And then when I went through that lawsuit, I got my phone out again and had to go through, like, all the voice notes and the pictures and all that stuff for the. For the lawyers. And I switched it on and it was like going into a time machine. Like, the first text was my friend that had passed away the year before. The second text was like an argument with an ex girlfriend. The third text was a family member I hadn't spoken to in 10 years. Fourth text was another mate that died. And I was kind of like scrolling down. It really, really spun me out. And that day I wrote in my notes, like, I found my old phone today. And then Finished this as a song, and then I ended up writing it into a song that. That's the music video for, essentially.
Jimmy Fallon
Come on. That's unbelievable.
Ed Sheeran
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
Thank you for doing that. Oh, my God. Fantastic. Ed Sheeran. Stick around, everybody. Our next guest is a talented actor who you know from the show Sex Education and the Barbie movie. He's also the star of Doctor who. The new season premieres April 12th on Disney. Everyone please welcome Shoney Gatwa. Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome. My gosh, it is so nice to meet you.
Shuti Gatwa
It's so exciting to be here. Jimmy. What a legend you are. Thank you for having me on the show.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God. Right back at you. But, I mean, we gotta talk about this. Cause it's a very exciting few years for you. I mean, you get announced that you're Doctor who, you're in a Barbie movie, you're one of the Kens. I mean, were you on set right when you found out?
Shuti Gatwa
Yes, I was filming Barbie when the announcement came out. And what a. What a mad day that was. I was supposed to not have told anyone, and I told everyone.
Jimmy Fallon
That's good news. Why not? Why?
Shuti Gatwa
No, I think we had, like. We had a cast dinner in, like, the first week, and I was sat beside Margot, and she was like, what are you doing next? And I was like, I'm Doctor who. That's what I'm doing.
Jimmy Fallon
That's what I'm doing next. That's what I'm doing. Yes, I'm Doctor who. Yeah. And was the cast also supportive and happy?
Shuti Gatwa
Yeah, really lovely and supportive. And, yeah. It was such a surreal day. I was like, I'm on this incredible job with these incredible people, and this job has just been announced, and there was a moment when I was, like, sat at my trailer just processing life.
Jimmy Fallon
Good. Yeah.
Shuti Gatwa
And then dropping all these names here. Ryan Gosling comes, like, walking up and he's like, doctor who? I was like, you're not a fan, are you? And he's a huge Whovian.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, he's a very Whovian.
Shuti Gatwa
He's a Whovian.
Jimmy Fallon
He's a Whovian. He actually had a T shirt made of you.
Shuti Gatwa
I know.
Jimmy Fallon
He's a good dude.
Shuti Gatwa
He's a good dude.
Jimmy Fallon
He's a good guy.
Shuti Gatwa
Now, my screensaver or my phone, by the way, how embarrassing is it, really? It is.
Jimmy Fallon
You don't have your phone on you, do you?
Shuti Gatwa
I let go of that. I kind of let go of this moment.
Jimmy Fallon
One of the things when you're doing this, it's obviously very serious, but you like, to keep fun on set, can you tell everybody something you did to keep everyone just having fun on set?
Shuti Gatwa
Yeah, it's just long days, very long days on set.
Jimmy Fallon
And, you know, you start goofing off.
Shuti Gatwa
You start goofing off. In between battling the bogeyman and like robots, you just chill for a bit.
Jimmy Fallon
Need to blow off some steam.
Shuti Gatwa
You need to blow off some steam. Yeah. Me and Millie got obsessed with this influencer called Bowmanizer. He's this really incredible comedian writer. I mean, he does this sick Kourtney Kardashian impression. And so he just became obsessed. And so in between takes, we would just be like, I'm the Doctor. How are we. How are we gonna stop the Daleks? How will we stop the Cyberman?
Jimmy Fallon
How will we stop the Dallas?
Shuti Gatwa
Yeah. But we never learned to stop doing the accent. And so sometimes it'll just start going. And we're doing the scene in Kourtney Kardashian. And cut.
Jimmy Fallon
Let's cut and start that again. A little shout out to Kourtney Kardashian. That's not bad. It's a good one.
Shuti Gatwa
We need to get her in the show.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, that's what we need to do. Yeah, she'd be great. Do you remember your first on camera acting gig?
Shuti Gatwa
I do, yes. I played Burger man in. In a show called Bob Servant, which was played by the incredible, legendary Brian Cox. And he was. He mans a burger van and I go up and I buy a burger from him, which is like, it's not being cooked. And I get really sick and I have to go up, back up to the van.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow.
Shuti Gatwa
And be like, I'm. I'm this burgers. And, you know, I was speaking to a friend of mine the other day who. Who got speaking to Brian and was telling him, like, have you heard about who the new Doctor who is? He was like, no. And he was like, it's this guy shooting gatwa. And he was actually in a show with you. He was in Bob Servant and he bought a burger and he was. Oh, my God, I remember that guy who was. That was a pain.
Jimmy Fallon
That's what you want from Brian Cox.
Shuti Gatwa
Support from Brian Cox. That's what you want.
Jimmy Fallon
That's what you want him.
Shuti Gatwa
And he needs him to spare it you.
Jimmy Fallon
It's an honor. Yeah, yeah. But look at you now. Come on, look at you now. In fact, you have a Madame Tussauds wax figure made after you. Was it. Did it freak you out when you saw you?
Shuti Gatwa
Yeah. Choose that ugly man.
Jimmy Fallon
No. Yeah. Stud.
Shuti Gatwa
No. It's freak.
Jimmy Fallon
They do so well.
Shuti Gatwa
Like, I.
Jimmy Fallon
They're amazing, right?
Shuti Gatwa
Incredible.
Jimmy Fallon
But it was the teeth or the teeth.
Shuti Gatwa
The teeth freaked me out. Cause I didn't bite into anything. I didn't bite into a mold. So I was like, how did you get that? But it's just, I mean, incredible craftsmanship.
Jimmy Fallon
It is kind of. It's an amazing thing. And you get to hang with your. Wait till you see the photos people are gonna take next to you. And they'll be like, yeah, people do some stuff. Yeah. Doctor who comes back in a couple weeks. What can fans expect for this new season?
Shuti Gatwa
Oh, my gosh. So much. Russell T. Davis is back at the helm. Showrunner. We have a brand new companion played by an incredible actress called Verada Sefu. She's here. And. Yeah, just madness, adventures, monsters they can't get Back to. So Dr. Who, for those who don't know.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Shuti Gatwa
In America is a show about a time traveling alien who's shaped like a human who travels around in a spaceship that's shaped like a police man's box.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Shuti Gatwa
And they battle monsters and he takes a human companion throughout time and space and they travel. But this season they can't get back to Earth. And so the whole season follows that.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow.
Shuti Gatwa
And all the adventures that follow.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, come on now, Suny Godwa. The new season of Doctor who premieres April 12th on Disney. More Tonight show after the break. Stick it out, everybody. Yeah, tell them what comes around, goes around. Like the vortex competition. I'm all for it. Quartet. So what? My most depth being force fed, Sending.
Shuti Gatwa
My goals for what I need to play with.
Jimmy Fallon
