It's like, yeah, we're going to the store. Get in the car. There's six hours. We'll get there, pack a lunch.

Pack a lunch. Yeah. One time we drove to Disney World in Orlando. So we went Texas.

Yes. From Corpus Christi, Texas, which is like the Gulf of Mexico. And you go, you go from Texas to Orlando and it's like 15 hours. And my dad was like. I remember, he's like, we gotta make good time. And he wouldn't let us stop.

[Eva Longoria]

I know.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Gotta make good time. It was like no pee break, no bathroom, no snack break, no drink break.

And like, dad, Disney World will be there.

And this was like, you know, before seatbelts were important, you know?

You're selling out in arenas. This is nothing to you. This is. No, come on. I mean, do you remember when you first started now stand up. And you first got paid?

Yeah, I do.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Where were you?

[Questlove]

Like, this whole thing has been a surreal dream for me. Like I was in Ruskin, Florida. I was a teenager and I hadn't decided I was gonna be a comedian. And I was just with some older people and we were going in this establishment and I realized I'm finna get carded and I'm not old enough to be in here.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Questlove]

And then a guy walked.

[Jimmy Fallon]

It was like a bar.

[Questlove]

It was.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Questlove]

Ruskin is very small. And so when I get in there, I get in there as the comedian number five. So they put me up in this competition and I won $25 for doing.

[Jimmy Fallon]

That's what I'm talking. That's how it started and you got the bug right there. You said, this is what I have to do. This is what I've been chosen to do.

[Questlove]

No, the whole thing was, I was myself. Somebody paid me for being me.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah, I didn't think about that. I didn't think about that.

[Questlove]

I've been shocked ever since.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah, when you're not doing comedy, I know you're playing golf. Yes, I know you love golf. But then you had to stop playing for a while because you tore both rotator cuffs. You ready for this? Doing a push up contest. Why?

[Questlove]

Hold on, hold on. Losing.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah, I'm sorry. Losing a push up contest.

[Questlove]

You said, like, maybe I won.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah, no, sorry, I just gave. No, you did not.

[Questlove]

No.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah, but you're getting back to your game.

[Questlove]

No, like golf. Golf saved my life. Like, you don't understand. Like, when I say golf is the greatest sport in the world, I don't mean that because I'm great at it. Like, that would be facetious. I don't mean that. What I mean is golf is a sport where 80 year old guys can play it, excel at it, and be vicious on the field. And no other sport even offers that. So golf saved me and saved my rotator cuffs in my life.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah, I did. Yeah. And you, you told me you travel now with a crew. When you golf with a crew of like 80 year old men and you golf with them, that's your. That's you.

[Questlove]

That's who saved my life. Like these, these 80 year old golfers showed me how to play this sport without hurting myself and without extending beyond my boundaries. And they showed me what golf is about and that's my posse.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah. And when you're on the chorus, I know that. To go to your happy place and tell me if I'm wrong about this, but you listen to Pearl Jam. Is this. Am I making this up? There's so many rumors.

[Questlove]

This is why I do an interview with Jesus. How do you know my answers? You don't know me like this.

[Jimmy Fallon]

I know I'm really getting so. Yeah, I'm really getting in there.

[Questlove]

Right, Because I'm.

[Jimmy Fallon]

How do you remember your first welcome to the Pearly game? And remember, you all remember the one time you did that. You play Pearl Jam. There's still time. There's still time. Be careful at home. But you love Pearl Jam. That's what you listen to on the golf course.

[Questlove]

It's not that. It's just that golf honors visualization, which I'm really good at, and comedy likes visualization and I'm really good at it. So I have this thing where if I need to calm down, I can become 17 again by listening to what I was listening to when I was 17. And it reminds me, like, you ain't nobody. Like, do a good job.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah, that's good.

[Questlove]

Yeah.

[Jimmy Fallon]

But Pearl Jam was what you were listening to when you were 17.

[Questlove]

I don't know what the age was, but at the time that I was listening to Pearl Jam, I was listening to, like, August and everything after by Counting Crows. Like, these albums, like, I play with noses skips in my head because each leads into Once Upon a time, you know?

Wow. Oh, I love that. Next time, we're going to have to do a little 90s music game or something. Figure something, but. Yeah.

No. I wanted to ask you some stuff, Kat, by the way, can I just say, you've always been nice to me, and I met you years ago at, I think, the Comedy Store, and you were great on stage, and I talked to you afterwards, and I was just starting out, and you were just very, very nice to me. And you crushed, by the way, and everyone was afraid to follow you, and it was like no one wanted to go on after you. But thank you for being nice to me. I just want to say that I have rumors.

No, sir. As a white person, I need you to understand what I was thinking on the other end of meeting you. Right. Because you remember that, and you remember what you remember, but I remember was a guy that seemed to me to have all of the benefits that would guarantee his success, and he was too stupid to live on any of it. You out there trying to do comedy, you got smooth milk, white skin. You look like you come from money, like you're in here in the trenches with us. If I'm not funny tonight, I'm gonna be hungry. Like. And I see this Jimmy. I'm like, this guy's gonna freaking make it. I just know it.

I got a cease and desist from my appearances on Commie View, where I made $300 from three seasons.

And they sent a cease and desist. And because I'm a naturally positive person, like, to the point where if something negative happens in front of me, like, sometimes I don't see it.

Yeah.

So when they sued me for the name, I was like, wait a minute. I'm worthless. How the hell did I end up on their radar?

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah. Yeah, Yeah. I got nothing to give you.

[Questlove]

I'm gonna.

[Katt Williams]

Yeah.

[Jimmy Fallon]

[Questlove]

And me and Fallon.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Two hungry comedians. I heard that you bought a military base in Alabama. Is that true? A military base.

[Questlove]

As starving comedians would do.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Now, I don't know if you're being truthful or not. Did you really buy one? Yeah.

Fort McClellan. Yeah.

[Jimmy Fallon]

What's.

[Questlove]

Because the thing that. The reason why, like, my life works in golf and off the golf course is because I follow instruction well. Right. So if I see somebody do a good job, I just want to do a good job.

Yeah.

[Questlove]

I'm going to follow the example.

Right.

[Questlove]

So Tyler Perry got a military base.

[Jimmy Fallon]

That's correct.

[Questlove]

Made it into a movie studio and started making movies. Katt Williams.

Bought a military base. Are you making movies?

I'm not wearing dresses.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

Come on, man. Thank you. I would totally do that. Finally, is it true that you taught Steph Curry, one of the greatest shooters of all time, how to shoot a basketball?

[Questlove]

Okay. Doesn't that sound ridiculous?

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yes. Right.

[Questlove]

He has an NBA father, so I couldn't possibly. That's impossible right now have taught him anything about playing a basketball. I convinced him that he had the potential to be the greatest shooter that ever lived. Right. And so I'll give you a seven second story and you tell me, was I off? So we got this guy. I'm doing these celebrity basketball games for the Department of Children and Family Services in Los Angeles and I've hired this team of people to play and there's this guy that we're paying to come and play basketball for the celebrity event. And on the first game, this guy scores 50 points. He's never sweating and he takes all his shots from the free, from the half court. Like that's where he's shooting from. From half court and he's making, he's making four out of six.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Questlove]

And I, I booked him again for the next one.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Questlove]

And I explained to him, I was like, do you understand if you ever get in the NBA, like they don't even start the defense until the three point line and you.

[Jimmy Fallon]

They're not even. Yeah.

[Questlove]

And you never have to get close to that. And because I'm a bad player. He watched me follow my shot all over the court. I'm getting all the rebounds because I'm 5 5. What else am I going to do? Right.

[Jimmy Fallon]

You're getting your own rebound.

[Questlove]

Right. He takes both of these things and is the only basketball player to always be open and always make his shot. He had that potential. But I was the person that said directly to him, you are the greatest shooter if you never get there.

[Jimmy Fallon]

There you have it. All right. That kind of clears it up. Yeah, you didn't, but you kind of did. Can we talk about your album coming out April 1st, by the way?

[Questlove]

Yes.

[Jimmy Fallon]

I know you've been in town for a little bit because. Cause you're filming in New Jersey. You were playing Bruce Springsteen's father.

[Katt Williams]

I was, yeah. That was a few months ago. Yeah.

[Jimmy Fallon]

That's really fun. Deliver Me From Nowhere.

[Katt Williams]

Yes. Yeah, that's right.

[Jimmy Fallon]

This is the film. And this is you. Is that Springsteen?

[Katt Williams]

Bruce. And that's Scott Cooper, the wonderful director.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Oh, yeah. And what was Bruce like?

[Katt Williams]

Absolutely adorable. Have you met him?

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yes, he is.

[Katt Williams]

Yeah. He's wonderful. You know, he's absolutely phenomenal.

[Jimmy Fallon]

He was the great.

[Katt Williams]

Such a humble, kind, gent, generous person. Do you know what I mean?

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Katt Williams]

What I did was, for my research, I listened to his audiobook.

[Jimmy Fallon]

It's phenomenal.

[Katt Williams]

It's great, isn't it? And it's just the richness in his voice and, you know, him reliving all them beautiful stories. But what he does is he kind of. When he talks about his dad, he creates a different Persona. So I just basically nicked what he'd done. You know what I mean? I nicked that little voice that he did. Such a wonderful man.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Katt Williams]

And he's got time for everyone on set. He's so humble.

[Jimmy Fallon]

You've worked with everybody and everyone's got great stories about you. De Niro, Al Pacino. I know Leonardo DiCaprio loves you. You guys met on. Was it Gangs of New Year's? New York.

[Katt Williams]

Yeah, yeah, that was. That was.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Katt Williams]

I got in trouble for a little bit first, though.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Can you just tell? You just tell.

[Katt Williams]

Well, look, what happened was Leo used to drive a golf cart.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Katt Williams]

You know the way they drive golf carts, big sets and stuff like that?

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Katt Williams]

So I asked him for a golf. I said, can I have a go at a golf cart? And he was like, yeah. Okay. So I was driving it, and at Chinicheeta Studios, it's where they filmed, like, Ben Head and Fellini, done all his films that. It's amazing. It's beautiful. So we're going around the studios, and we get to the top of this hill, and it's a big hill. And golf carts aren't that fast, are they? No, but going downhill they are. Do you know what I mean? So we're sat in a golf cart and There was me, there was him, and there was Alec in the back, and I've floored it. You know, we were like the Flintstones, basically.

[Jimmy Fallon]

You know what I mean?

[Katt Williams]

So we're trying to get down this hill and then all of a sudden, you know the way you knock a golf cart into reverse and it takes its time, but if you knock it into reverse when you're going quite fast, well, the back wheels lock. So as the back wheels lock, I've turned it, Jim. And as I've turned it, the whole thing's just started to fall. But a golf cart falling is kind of slow motion in itself. Do you know what I mean? So it's falling really slowly and I'm like. And he's looking at me and he's going, what the. And the next minute, as it's. It looks like it's going to break his leg. So he just manages to get out the way and we've got up and then Alec, who's a lovely lad, Alec, goes, Can't say exactly what he said, can I? But anyway, he goes, you're an animal. And I was like, what? And he was like. And so my nickname became Annie. Yeah. After that, they called me Animal.

[Jimmy Fallon]

They called you Animal? Yeah. Annie. Yeah. All right, good. That's a good story. But be careful. You almost killed.

[Katt Williams]

I know, I know. We would have had to stop filming.

[Jimmy Fallon]

We would have had to. Yeah. Well, please. Yeah. I gotta talk about adolescence, please. This is. It came out last week. It's been number one ever since. People on social media are calling you the greatest British actor of all time, by the way. Yeah. Plug your ears. Well, yeah, sorry, you also. Who co. Wrote the series.

[Katt Williams]

Yeah.

[Jimmy Fallon]

How do we set up what this is about?

[Katt Williams]

It's the story of a young boy who's convicted of a murder. It's a young boy who kills a young girl. I'm not doing any spoilers because we found out straight away, and as a collective, we didn't want it to be a who done it. We wanted it to be more of a why. Why he did it. You know what I mean? So what we kind of did was I read an article in the paper. It was about a young boy who stabbed a young girl to death. And then there was, a couple of months later on the news, there was a piece about a young boy who stabbed a young girl to death. And these were at opposite ends of the country. And I just. If I'm really honest with you, Jim, I just, you know, it hurt my heart. And I just think what Kind of a society we're living in at the moment where young boys are stabbing young girls. And, you know that beautiful saying, it takes a village to raise a child. Well, I just thought, what if we're all kind of accountable? You know, the education system, parenting, the community, the government. And also, when we were kids, we didn't have social media. So if we were in our rooms when we were kids, we were either playing out in the streets, weren't we, or we were in our rooms drawing pictures or playing keyboards or something. We didn't have the accessibility to all of this stuff in the world that really influences young minds. And I just. I wanted to take a look at it. I'm not blaming anyone. I just thought maybe we're all accountable and we should, you know, have a conversation about it.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah. Oh, my gosh. It's really great. You're right.

[Katt Williams]

It'S a heavy subject.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Katt Williams]

But I think it's something that we need to look at.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Katt Williams]

As a society, basically.

[Jimmy Fallon]

I watch the first episode of this four and I'm just like. I was shook and just going like, I just felt the heat and I felt like I was in the scene with you. I also will say, every episode is filmed with one shot. One continuous shot. Doesn't cut. You won't believe this. How did you even pull that off?

[Katt Williams]

Well, what we do is our fantastic director, Phil Barentini's a mate. He was with us both in Band of Brothers back in the day. Yeah. So that was a long time ago. A long time ago. And basically what we do is we spend the first week going through the script. So it's like a play. We really dissect it and we make sure that everyone's on the same page, literally. And we know what we're doing and why we're saying the things. And what was great was Jack Thorne, who was one of our finest writers, he was on set with us. So we had me, Jack and Phil, and the cast really get to understand the language and what we're doing in the text. And then the second week, you choreograph it with Matt Lewis, who's our camera operator. So we did the whole thing, and then it's a ballet. So then you construct the whole scene because some of it, we go from a living room, from the bedroom upstairs, down into a car to the prison, you know, to the police station. So it's all one continuous movement.

[Jimmy Fallon]

What if someone makes a mistake?

[Katt Williams]

Well, then you know what it's like. You just kind of carry on unless it's one of those things where the lights went out one time in the police station, so we have to stop. But the first episode that you see is the second take. That's the second take we had in its entirety. And then the final episode, that's the 14th take. But can I just say, look, you know, the crews that we work with, they're the people that make us look great. You know what I mean? Let's be honest about it.

[Jimmy Fallon]

That's great.

[Katt Williams]

We take the glory.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Katt Williams]

But the camera operators, the sound department, I mean, I mean, you've got your wonderful band, and they're just phenomenal. But with this particular piece, I've never been so in sync with the crew ever, because we're all on the same ship together, basically. Do you know what I mean?

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah.

[Katt Williams]

As soon as the whistle goes, it's all of us as a collective trying to achieve that one objective.

[Jimmy Fallon]
