Shakira. Hot crowd tonight.
Jimmy Fallon
Welcome, everybody.
Shakira
Welcome to the Tonight Show. You're here. You're me.
Jimmy Fallon
Thank you. Well, guys, here's some big news. History was made today as the Vatican just elected the first ever American Pope. Don't worry, not him. His name is Robert Prevost and he's going by the title of Pope Leo xiv. You can tell he's American because he stepped out on the Vatican balcony and said, new Pope who dis? And I go, that feels wrong. It feels wrong.
Shakira
Modern.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. The new Pope is actually from Chicago. And of course, NBC wasted no time. There it is. It's happening. Coming this fall. Coming this fall. People are excited about the Pope being from Chicago. Cause it means. Yeah, I love that. It means we're one step closer to deep dish communion wafers. I love that. Yep, he may be the new Pope, but to his friends back in Chicago, he'll always be Bobby Bratwurst. The new Pope actually graduated from Villanova University. It's wild that we have a Pope who might have done a keg stand. Isn't that one? Might have. Might have. Meanwhile, after the new Pope was announced, President Trump posted on social media and said, it is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement and what a great honor for our country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo xiv. And the Pope was like, sorry, I don't speak English. That's right. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was chosen as Pope. He beat out 187 other cardinals. Yeah. Yep. Well, here's what they had to say about the historic selection. This cardinal said, I'm very happy for the new Pope. This is a joyous day. And this cardinal said, for sure. Me too. I'm excited for him. I'm definitely not jealous. Then this cardinal said, for sure, for sure. I definitely didn't already sell my apartment. That would have been dumb. Then this cardinal said, for sure, for sure, for sure. I definitely didn't already buy a pair of fuzzy dice for the Popemobile. Then this cardinal said, for sure, for sure, for sure, for sure. I definitely didn't get a back tattoo that says Pope and ain't easy. And finally this cardinal said, quick cue. Does anyone on Facebook Marketplace need a giant white hat? That's it. We're all very excited.
Quick cue.
Quick cue.
Shakira
Yeah. That's why they say it in Rome, right?
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, in Rome. I've got a quick cue for you. Quick cue. Yeah. Some news from Washington today. Trump announced that the US struck a comprehensive trade deal with the uk. Trump made an interesting deal. We'll send them American food like beef and pork, and in return, they will not send us any British food. It's a good deal. Yeah. Trump announced a trade deal with the UK and there were a lot of intense negotiations. We actually got a recording of a recent phone call between Trump and the UK Prime Minister. Yeah. Listen to this.
Donald Trump
Mr. President, I'm excited to discuss lower tariffs on cars, steel and aluminium. Sorry, what was the last one? Aluminium.
Jimmy Fallon
Aluminum.
Donald Trump
Aluminium. Aluminum. Aluminium. Aluminum. Aluminium. Aluminum. Mr. President, please, we must stay on schedule. Schedule, schedule, schedule, schedule, schedule, schedule, schedule. Come on, we can't do a deal if you don't talk.
Jimmy Fallon
Good.
Donald Trump
We haven't even discussed tariffs on food yet. People aren't getting their vitamins. Vitamins because it costs more to buy. Potato, potato, yogurt. Yogurt. Herbs like oregano. Herbs like oregano and tomato, tomato, tomato, tomato. Let's call the whole thing off.
Jimmy Fallon
That's wild. Yeah. You guys see this? The US has ordered its intelligence agencies to increase its spying on Greenland. And that was an international headline. So so far, it's going great. And finally, guys, Mother's Day is this Sunday. That's right. That means a lot of people are shopping for that perfect Mother's Day card. And while there are lots of good choices, there are also some less popular cards out there. I'm going to show you what I mean. First up, this card says, mom, I do anything for you. Open it up says, except fly through Newark. And that's. Here's another one. It says, mom, I love the way you open it up. It says, text in size 72 font. This next one says, you light up my life. You open up, it says, because you accidentally left your phone flashlight on again, just press the button. This next one says, I know I can count on you. Open up. And says to send me an Instagram reel I saw on TikTok in 2020. I saw this already, Mom. Up next, this one's nice. This one says, mom, you are always right by my side. Open it up says, during the weird brother stuff on the White Lotus. That's an odd moment. Next up, this one says, today's the day I have to tell you. Open up says, I'm the one who broke the VCR in 1998. That was me. That was me. I did it. Did I do that? And finally, this one says, mom, what would today be if I didn't say, I love you? Open up, it says, answer Father's Day. There you go.
Shakira
Have a great show. Shakira is here. Melissa Rivers is joining us from adolescence. Erin Doherty is here. And we got great stand up from Joe Liss. Stick around. We're playing boxing lives with Shakira. When we come back.
Jimmy Fallon
Everybody get down. Hey.
Shakira

Shakira
Kicks off in the US this month. For tickets go to shakira.com Everyone please welcome Shakira.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my goodness.
Shakira
Shakira. Thank you. Welcome back.
Thank you so much for having me.
Jimmy Fallon
Welcome back. Thank you for being here. You performed here on Tuesday. It was unbelievable. Thank you for doing that. We've been spending a lot of time together. We saw each other at the Met Gala on Monday.
Shakira
Yeah. You looked sharp.
Jimmy Fallon
I did?
Shakira
Yeah. You look so good.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, stop. No. You are standing next to. No one can stand next to you. You're so stunning. Look at you. This is you. This is me. I never know what to do with my hands. My friends say that I always do magician hands.
Shakira
You do.
Jimmy Fallon
I look like a magician. When I post, I always pose for a photo. They do this.
Shakira
It's so nice to see you. Because at some point, I couldn't find my designer. And I was like. I felt alone. I felt all by myself. And then I saw you. Oh, yeah. Familiar face. And thank you, by the way, for not stepping on my train. Because everybody stepped on my train. Everyone.
Jimmy Fallon
I felt so bad because all these beautiful trains, all these dresses, and everyone's stepping on them.
Shakira
Mine was getting tie dye.
Jimmy Fallon
Everyone's stepping on it. I mean, I felt so bad. Cause the girl sitting next to me had a beautiful dress on and someone was standing on a train. And she was trying to dance to Stevie Wonder. And she was like, you know, couldn't really.
Shakira
I don't know how many times that happened to me. Oh, God.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm here to help. That's it.
Shakira
After you left, I just left the train. It must be somewhere in the Metropolitan.
Jimmy Fallon
You left it?
Shakira
I just left it there.
Jimmy Fallon
It's in the museum somewhere.
Shakira
Yeah, it's part of the exhibition. I think that people must think it's an inflatable or something.
Jimmy Fallon
Last time you were here, I don't know if you remember this? You said that you were gonna do something special in New York. And that something turned out to be a surprise concert in Times Square. And it was insane. Look at this.
Shakira
Look at this craft.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God.
Shakira
I know.
40,000 people showed up.
Jimmy Fallon
We love you.
Shakira
The funny thing is that I was so scared to do that performance because I thought people were not gonna show up. Cause we announced it like two hours before the appearance. And half an hour before the appearance, I just saw cars. I was speaking through the window. I was so scared. I was like, oh, my God, this is the end of my career. And then in the last 20 minutes, it was a sea of people.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God. It only took 20 minutes and it filled up. 40,000 people in New York.
Shakira
Yeah. That's crazy.
Jimmy Fallon
You crushed it. You always crush it. I mean, come on.
Shakira
No, New Yorkers.
New Yorkers do.
I'm telling you, New Yorkers have this amazing energy. They never, never disappoint. And that's why I'm so excited about next week, because I'm gonna be performing at the MetLife.
Jimmy Fallon
I mean.
Shakira
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
From the Met Gala to the met gala to MetLife. Oh, my God. Can I just talk about your tour? By the way, you broke the record for the highest grossing March tour. You're the first artist to sell out 11 stadium shows in Mexico City.
Shakira
11 Telivo, Mexico. And for the second month in a.
Jimmy Fallon
Row, you've had the number one tour in the world.
Shakira
Shakira.
Jimmy Fallon
Look.
Shakira
Are you serious? Take a look at this.
Jimmy Fallon
Take a look at this photo. Look at this. What does it feel like? What does it feel like when you're out there and everyone's dancing and singing to you?
Shakira
It's incredible. It's incredible. You know, I've been working on this tour for a year, preparing every single detail, from the visuals to the music. I've put together my biggest set. My biggest set list.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Shakira
I'm singing some of my classic songs from Hips, Don't Lie to Whenever, whatever. To the most recent ones. Yeah. And it's a pretty huge production. It's a huge effort, you know, to tour with this production around Latin America. It's probably the biggest production that's ever traveled Latin America. It weighs like 93 tons. Geez, 93 tons. The whole production and the screen is huge. It's 145 people traveling. So, like, when it's a big family. Yeah, it's a big family. And the crew makes huge efforts to put this show together every night. So when you show up and you see so many People dancing and singing and crying and getting emotional, and it's a party. But people really, really connect with this music that has been a part of their. It's been like the soundtrack of their lives. You know, for many of my fans, it's music that has been accompanying them for, you know, their whole lives. Yeah. And there's also new fans, also people who just got familiar with my music recently.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
There's also new generations, always new generations of stuff. I don't know how you do it, but I think you can tell when you watch Shakira that the love is in there. You still love it. You put your heart and soul and everything out there, and we can feel it. And there's no one like you. It's amazing. So you deserve all the success.
Shakira
Thank you so much.
Jimmy Fallon
It's amazing. It's real.
Shakira
I really think that I have the best fans in the world.
Jimmy Fallon
You do.
Shakira
You have the best fans.
I'm loyal. They've been there in the good times, not so good times, and they're always there for me. They always show up.
Jimmy Fallon
But every time, you also always show up. When you come here. You come here early in the morning. I mean, like, you're here at, like, 8 in the morning, going all day, making sure the shots are perfect. And you do this, you think about what's gonna be the next move. And I appreciate that. As a talk show host, you always bring it. Thank you so much again, I love it. You're on this tour.
Shakira
I love me too.
Jimmy Fallon
You're the best on this tour. You have. Pit Bull is joining you for a couple things. Wycloth John is joining you for some shows.
Shakira
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
That's fun to bring some friends.
Shakira
Yeah, that's gonna be, I think, like, the Nuance in the US tour. This is my first stadium tour in the US and so I'm gonna have some of my friends sing with me, join me on stage. Wycliffe's gonna be one of them. He's gonna be performing on my first show in Charlotte. And also Alejandro Sands Pitbull in New York. And there's so many more surprises that I can't say right now, but it's gonna be pretty exciting.
Jimmy Fallon
We were talking the other day, you and Wycliffe. Hips Don't Lie went to number one. And that wasn't really supposed to be on the album.
Shakira
No. No, it wasn't. I remember my album was already distributed, and then this idea came up, and Wycliffe and I met, and we started working on this track.
Jimmy Fallon
Have you never worked with him before?
Shakira
No, never. And, you know, the funniest thing is that I had a dream, the most random dream about Wycliffe. It wasn't a sexual dream.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay. All right. It's a family show. Okay. Younger.
Shakira
And then I woke up and my manager called me and said, you know what? Wycliffe wants to work with you. And I'm like, no, no, it can't be. I had a dream about Wycliffe last night. Why would I dream about Wyclecliffe?
Jimmy Fallon
You manifested it.
Shakira
So, yeah. The albums were distributed, and this song came about. I started working with Wyclef, and I knew I had a hit, so I called Donny Ayner, who was in charge at the time of the company, and I said, donnie, you have to pick up the album. So from the stores. And he's like, no way. These albums are already out there. I'm like, you gotta believe me. You gotta trust me. You do that, we have a hit. And he said, okay, so I'll listen to you. I listen to you on this one. And he did it. And we kind of had to repackage the album. Yeah. And, yeah. It changed my story.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my gosh. It became the biggest hit in the entire universe.
Great.
Shakira
I feel it. Since that song came about, people call me Shakira twice.
Shakira. Shakira.
Some people have used lie detectors on me.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Some people have done that.
Shakira
Yeah. Some people that I know.
Jimmy Fallon
Who would ever do that? Who would ever do that? Yeah. I also want to say I haven't had a chance to talk to you, but you were fantastic on the Grammys. You were so good. And congrats on winning another Grammy.
Shakira
Thank you. You know, I almost missed it because I was rehearsing. I was in Mexico doing food production rehearsals, and there was almost no physical time to come to the Grammys and to rehearse. I literally had one day for rehearsals. But I was glad that I did it, that I made it.
Jimmy Fallon
You rushed it.
Shakira
It was one of the best Grammy editions.
Jimmy Fallon
It really was great.
Shakira
I really enjoyed it. Yeah. Great performance also.
Jimmy Fallon
You know how you can dance. You're unbelievable to watch. You're fantastic. It's like a magic trick. I don't even know how to describe you. How do you dance? Like, what if Shakira's at a wedding or something? Like, do people all look. Does everyone look at you? Like, how is she gonna dance? Like, what is she doing? Like, do you. Like, what do you do?
Shakira
How do I dance?
Jimmy Fallon
I mean, if you.
Shakira
Depending on your music, how do you Dance. Is that your step?
Erin Doherty
Is that your step?
Shakira
Ah, that's cute. That's cute.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Shakira
Or you open your hands like that.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, yeah. And then I open my hands like that. Like. What do you think? Yeah, yeah.
Shakira
Dad's hands.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. All right, well, next time you're on, I want you to give me some dance techniques. Okay. Give me some dance lessons or something.
Shakira
Of course. Of course. You can always headbang, you know. Oh, that's a safe go to.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, I can headbang.
Shakira
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Well, how would that go?
Shakira
I don't like this. No, not this.
Nothing secure.
Jimmy Fallon
Everybody.
Shakira
Kicks off in the US this month. For tickets, go to Shakira.com. more tonight shows.
Jimmy Fallon
Stick around.
Joe List
Yeah, Got that thing with my half man. Had to get his latest. One last chance. Hey, earn this. Life in the face.
Shakira
Our next guest is a New York.
Jimmy Fallon
Times bestselling author and the host of the podcast group Text. She executive produced a new special honoring her legendary mother called Joan Rivers, A Dead Funny All Star Tribute, which airs May 13 at 10pm on NBC and the next day on Peacock. Everyone please welcome Melissa Rivers.
Shakira
Melissa.
Jimmy Fallon
And my.
Melissa Rivers
My birthday brother.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, you quest. Ooh. Same birthday.
Melissa Rivers
Yep.
Jimmy Fallon
How you doing?
Melissa Rivers
Separated at birth.
Jimmy Fallon
What's your sign?
Melissa Rivers
We are on the cusp of Capricorn to Aquarius. So we're either whatever horoscope you like, whatever one is working for me that day.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, we'll take that one.
Melissa Rivers
Yeah, the one that doesn't suck.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, of course. Yeah, we'll take that one. What sign is your husband?
Melissa Rivers
Oh, God. Oh, he's Gemini, like my mother.
Jimmy Fallon
Ooh.
Melissa Rivers
Ooh, that's weird. And they're crazy. They're only good during, like, when Mercury's in retrograde. They're really normal and rapid.
Jimmy Fallon
That's the only time they're good.
Melissa Rivers
Like, my mom would say things and be like, oh, my God, she's making sense today. And we're like, check. It's Mercury in retrograde.
Jimmy Fallon
Well, by the way, congratulations. Thank you. You're married. There's your husband. Your husband right there. Yes. Big deal.
Melissa Rivers
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Melissa Rivers
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
Did everything go the way you hoped?
Melissa Rivers
Was it the first quarter of the year has been a little odd.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay.
Melissa Rivers
So sadly, we lost our house in the Palisades fire.
Jimmy Fallon
Sorry.
Melissa Rivers
Right before the wedding.
Jimmy Fallon
Oof.
Melissa Rivers
Well, so, like, that was the seventh, and we got married in March, and we decided to go ahead with it. Which people were like, yes, no. Yes, no. All my friends were very much like, let's go. We need this. And so we did do.
Jimmy Fallon
That's Good news.
Melissa Rivers
And it ended up being really fun.
Jimmy Fallon
Aw, that's great.
Melissa Rivers
You know.
Shakira
What?
Melissa Rivers
Nothing. I just am, like, thinking about all the crazy that went on. Sorry. Oh, my God. I just said that. Channeling my mother.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, you actually are.
Shakira
You're gonna get in trou.
Jimmy Fallon
Like your mama would get in trouble.
Melissa Rivers
When she came on here, she just said she doesn't like the tie.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God.
Shakira
Joan.
Jimmy Fallon
Joan, you love it.
Melissa Rivers
Yeah. Yeah. She thought maybe a different color, little more spring.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God. Would she be happy? That she'd be shocked. I think that you got married. You said. You famously said you would never get married.
Melissa Rivers
Yes. And if she wasn't dead, she would die. Yeah, exactly. This would kill you. Well, that or if she saw the barbell. Because everyone's like, did you have a big wedding? According to my bar bill, we had a very large wedding. Everyone had a lot of fun.
Shakira
Good.
Jimmy Fallon
That's what you want to have. Have a good time. Congratulations.
Thank you.
I'm so happy for you. Also, congrats on the podcast.
Melissa Rivers
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Group text.
Melissa Rivers
Group text.
Shakira
Group text is the podcast. Congratulations.
Melissa Rivers
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
And this is just based on texts that you get?
Melissa Rivers
Texts I get. And also sort of we've dovetailed into celebrity interviews that are just fun because I've been on both sides.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, of course.
Melissa Rivers
So it gets very conversational and usually very silly. Hard to believe, but my favorite. And I didn't know that you were a true crime fan.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, yes.
Melissa Rivers
I have lots of directors of true crime documentaries on.
Jimmy Fallon
No, my wife is more obsessed than.
Melissa Rivers
I am, but my mother.
Jimmy Fallon
Really?
Melissa Rivers
Oh, my God. Every forensic file, everything. And by the way, my writing partner, who I hope is watching. Probably not, because he doesn't want to talk to me right now. I'm sure I did. Something gave me one year, the Encyclopedia of Serial Killers.
Jimmy Fallon
I don't know if I would go that far.
Melissa Rivers
Oh, it's great.
Donald Trump
It is.
Melissa Rivers
You can look up like, any crazy serial killer. And, like, you could look. There's so many of them. What's your favorite serial killer?
Jimmy Fallon
What?
Shakira
This is the weirdest question.
Jimmy Fallon
I don't have any favorite. I don't like killing.
Melissa Rivers
I like Tom Ted.
Jimmy Fallon
No, you don't like anybody.
Melissa Rivers
You don't like any of this the old school way.
Shakira
No, I didn't say that at all.
Jimmy Fallon
Don't put words in my mouth. There is going to be a good date line, by the way, this week. See, look, these days are going to be great.
Melissa Rivers
One in the fire. I lost my Keith Morrison Christmas sweater.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, we love Keith Morrison. We can get you.
Melissa Rivers
I know, Keith, but do you have the sweater that says it was a typical holiday morning or was it.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God, no, I don't have that. Yeah, I think we do need that.
Melissa Rivers
Yeah, I think that's a. That's, that's necessary.
Jimmy Fallon
I want to talk about also the special that you produced about in honor of your mother, the great Joan River.
Melissa Rivers
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Unbelievable. It is. We loved her so much. One of the all time great comedians of all time. It is a very funny title. It's called Joan A Dead Funny All Star Tribute. Was that you?
Melissa Rivers
Of course it was, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Of course it was you, yeah. And in this you have comedians like Tiffany Haddish, Nikki Glaser, Chelsea Handler, just to name a few.
Melissa Rivers
Was amazing.
Jimmy Fallon
Tell me about putting this together.
Melissa Rivers
As you know, putting these shows together is very, very complicated because you've got to find a date. Sometimes I feel like we just took a dart and threw it at a calendar and it landed on the day that we taped it. We got very lucky. We were able to work around the dates and everyone said yes and people flew in and flew out and came in for the day. Jeff Ross came in for the day.
Jimmy Fallon
He's awesome.
Melissa Rivers
He's awesome. Anything for your mom. Anything. And it was great. And backstage it was so warm and so lovely. And to get a room full of comedians, not all trying to one up each other and. And throwing elbows, is amazing, of course. But what was amazing was when the clips of my mom would come on, everybody would stop and watch and we all walked away from the night saying, still the funniest person in the room.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, that's pretty good.
Melissa Rivers
It was amazing. It was an amazing experience.
Jimmy Fallon
I loved her so much. One of my all time favorite people, favorite guests. So funny. I remember telling you and your mom how much I loved the documentary Joan. And one scene in particular, she had all these jokes in a file cabinet. Like 70,000 jokes or something like that organized in a file cabinet. So if you had a joke on anyone, she would go to the file cabinet and pull it out. And Greg. Oh, I have a joke about that. And I was like, well, was that okay? Did that survive the.
Melissa Rivers
Yes, that survived. That is. I know. Everyone's like, are you okay? Yes. The jokes. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, no, no, no.
Melissa Rivers
I know. But it was funny because I'm like. And the dogs are fine too. You don't really know, but the jokes are. But you. They're going to the National Comedy Center.
Jimmy Fallon
No way.
Melissa Rivers
And we're doing a big exhibition and exhibit opens about her In August.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my gosh.
Melissa Rivers
But you were the one person. I didn't even know this joke existed. That after she passed, you said something about that she actually had a joke on Tony Danza.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Cause you in the thing, she goes, we have a joke about Tony Danza. And then you are the nice. After your mom, I sent you the card. I had it, and I have it hanging in my dressing room. I took it off the wall just to show everybody. I look at this every day. This says, wouldn't it be a major letdown to find out Tony Danz is Irish?
Shakira
Ah, that's so good.
Melissa Rivers
But the special. The special was so much fun, and it is so funny. And there's been a lot of things, like there's pictures going around and everyone's posing with an urn. And people have actually asked me, is that really her urn? I'm like, oh, yeah. I strapped her into first class on Delta. No, no, it's not. It is not.
Jimmy Fallon
Her Special airs at May 13th on NBC. Then they have a extended uncensored version that is available on Peacock.
Melissa Rivers
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Shakira
Melissa Rivers, everybody.
Thank you.
Joan Rivers. A dead funny all star tribute airs May 13 at 10pm on NBC. And the next day on Peacock.
Jimmy Fallon
We love you.
Shakira
Please thank you more Tonight show after the break. Stick around. Everybody.
Joe List
Take a dip. Yeah, Left. Take a dip. Take a dip. Take a dip. £21. Listen, stand up. Stretch for the stars. Get somebody else a palm right next to y' all she ever seem to do is play it cool. For real.
Shakira
Our next guest is a very talented.
Jimmy Fallon
Actress who stars in the hit series Adolescence, which is streaming right now on Netflix. Please welcome Erin Daugherty.
Joe List
Welcome.
Jimmy Fallon
Welcome to the show. It is so great to have you before we get into adolescence, which, by the way, wow. Wow. You were great. Oh, my gosh.
Erin Doherty
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
Amazing. I want to get into the whole thing, but I was doing a little research on you, and I found that you were. You're very athletic. You were an athlete. You almost went pro.
Erin Doherty
I loved it. So. But yeah, I played football. I grew up playing football. Doing it on the weekends. Yeah. Go to football.
Jimmy Fallon
Football, soccer.
Erin Doherty
Sorry, sorry, sorry.
Jimmy Fallon
Soccer, yeah. Vitamins.
Erin Doherty
Yeah, you know.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, you know, vitamins. Yeah, all that stuff. Tomato, tomatoes.
Erin Doherty
Yeah, exactly.
Jimmy Fallon
Football. Yeah, football. But so how'd you make the choice?
Erin Doherty
So basically, I love my dad, but he made me choose, and I love it. It's fine, Honestly. It took about five minutes to decide, but he essentially. We got to one weekend and he was just tired. Like, it all fell on A Sunday. A Sunday morning particularly. So he'd get in the car, drive me across the country, and then at the end of the match, stick me in the car again and drive me to my drama club. And he was like, I just can't keep doing it, Erin, So you need to make up your mind. Yeah. And honestly, like, it sounds like quite an intense thing to say to your kid, but I. I just. I've always felt something with acting, and I, like, I say it was never this horrendous, heartbreaking moment in my life. It was more just a moment of clarity and going, okay, I'm gonna go all in.
Jimmy Fallon
I think you made a great choice.
Erin Doherty
I'm chuffed.
Jimmy Fallon
We're very lucky that you made that choice.
Erin Doherty
I'm happy.
Jimmy Fallon
Do you still play?
Erin Doherty
Well? I mean, I still have, like, dreams about it. I love it. And I, like. I watched World cup every year, and also, like, the women now are doing so well, so it's amazing.
Jimmy Fallon
Them. Absolutely.
Erin Doherty
Yeah. So it's a really amazing moment for football in general, but no. So I went to go and, like, kind of play amateur, but essentially, as an actor, you're always in deals that essentially say you can't get injured. So I would. Yeah, I'd be on the pitch just, like, pulling out of tackles, and eventually they were like, erin, go home.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Erin Doherty
They were like, erin, you're making us worse.
Jimmy Fallon
It's too dangerous.
Erin Doherty
It was just bad. I wasn't a very good player because I couldn't.
Jimmy Fallon
It all worked out correct?
Erin Doherty
It did, yes.
Jimmy Fallon
It all landed safely. I want to talk about adolescence because, man, it's got incredible reviews out there now. It's officially the third most watched show in Netflix history, so that's a big deal.
Erin Doherty
I can't even run it. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
You'Re in the third episode, which many people consider the best episode of television so far this year. It was amazing. It's ridiculous. How do we set up what it's.
Erin Doherty
About, the show in general? Okay, so it's not a spoiler to say it's about a young boy who commits a crime. He kills a young girl, and the show essentially follows the repercussions of that on him and his family. Yeah. And I play a clinical psychologist who interviews him. And we meet Bryony, my character, at their last interview before she takes her report to the court system and they decide what will happen to him.
Jimmy Fallon
It's a crazy. And it's all shot in real time, right?
Erin Doherty
Yeah. All in one shot.
Jimmy Fallon
I mean, that's pressure. I don't know how you pulled this off, it's a masterstroke. It's unbelievable. But I mean, what if you made a mistake or did you get nervous that you might make a mistake?
Erin Doherty
Well, I'm a theater kid. Like, I grew up doing theater on the weekends. And so I'm like, I basically. I'd seen Stephen do Boiling Point. I don't know if you'd seen that show, but. But it's essentially the same idea. Phil Barantini directed that as well. And it's the one shot thing. And I'd seen him in that and was like, I need to do this with my life. I was just like, that's gonna be everything that I need. And it didn't disappoint.
Jimmy Fallon
But did he throw you or something like that? Or if, like, if you, like, like, if he moved his hand the wrong way or move. Did you go like, oh, sorry, can we do it again in a way?
Erin Doherty
Like, what Phil, the director was so great at, was encouraging those things and being like, for whatever reason, you may veer off the path that we've chosen, but that's a gift, and lean into that. And so the episode, the take that they chose was our 11th take, so it was our very last go at it. And for whatever reason Owen was. We were both pretty tired. But in the one that they chose, that was the one that he was yawning in and that wasn't. So things like that happen.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, we remember that.
Erin Doherty
Yeah. So that was just random. He just yawned.
Jimmy Fallon
Am I boring you?
Erin Doherty
Well, yeah, because I was like, well, I'm not gonna let that slide.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow. So that you just did that in the moment.
Erin Doherty
Yeah. But I'm like, that was the genius one of Owen. Owen's unreal.
Jimmy Fallon
You're both real.
Erin Doherty
But also it was just.
Jimmy Fallon
You're both unreal. You were unbelievable.
Erin Doherty
Thank you.
Shakira
It was like I couldn't understand what I was watching.
Jimmy Fallon
I go, both of you guys are. It's like watching a great tennis match.
Erin Doherty
That was it. That's what it felt like. But it was a joy to be a part of. Like, you felt safe and you felt held. And that's, I think, the theatre kid coming out in me being like, this is amazing. And rather than it feeling pressurized, it was just like this gorgeous opportunity to play and to see what happens and to throw different things at each other and to roll with it and be like, okay, you're yawning at me now. I'm gonna throw something back at you. And like, there's something really.
Jimmy Fallon
Did you have a Time code or anything. Or you go like, hey, were we going too long or hurry it up.
Erin Doherty
No, I think we'd rehearsed. So we rehearsed for longer than we shot. We rehearsed for two weeks. So we got it, like, pretty solidly down. We knew, like, the rhythms that happened.
Jimmy Fallon
You let it breathe, you let the scenes breathe. Yeah, it feels so real. It's crazy emotional.
Erin Doherty
I think it's. It. Hopefully what it does inspire is like, we need decent amount of rehearsals before we shoot. Cause I've been on shows before, and you literally rock up on the day. You maybe do it for like five minutes and then you go in. Whereas, like, to have that freedom of two weeks to just really get it in your bones, I think it really paid off. And it really, like, allowed us to sit in it.
Jimmy Fallon
I heard there was something that, you know, where, you know, he smacks the hot chocolate.
Erin Doherty
Yeah. We had one take where he. Yeah, he does the hot chocolate thing. But for whatever reason in this take, the way he hit it, it was all over the table. Like, it was everywhere. And I was like, oh. And I was about to leave the room. I knew I was about to leave the room. And I was like, okay, we'll carry on as normal. Like, let's just go with this.
Jimmy Fallon
This is a one shot.
Erin Doherty
Yeah. So you're like. This is like, essentially like doing a play. This is live. We're not gonna, like, okay, we're not gonna call cut now. So I leave the room and I go into my little, like, office y bit where the little monitors are, and it's literally live through those monitors. So I left and went in there and I could see loads and loads of crew, like, vigorously cleaning the table. And I was like, what do I do? Like, I knew the camera was on me watching them, and I was like, I'm gonna have to, like, look at this for a bit longer. I was like, okay, this is the one.
Jimmy Fallon
Let me really focus.
Erin Doherty
This is why Bryony's really feeling it.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my gosh.
Erin Doherty
Yeah. And we did it that way, so you just have to roll with it. But that's what I love about what I do is, like, it's always different and that's the joy of that take. And it's. Yeah, I love it.
Jimmy Fallon
You crushed it. And the show, I mean, it was just amazing to watch.
Erin Doherty
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
You have to be. Did you expect this outcome of all the. I mean, it's the most popular thing. People are having discussions, People are even showing it. I think at schools.
Erin Doherty
Yeah. So that's, like, new. So that's blown my mind. That's probably the biggest thing to me, that it just kind of gives you pause to go, wow, I'm a part of this moment in time almost. And obviously, as an actor, you dream about people even just recognizing something you're a part of and going, that was really great. But to then have it kind of go one bigger and to be talked about in Parliament and to be like, yeah, potentially put into secondary schools, like, it just. I genuinely don't think I can express one, how grateful I am to be a part of it. But also just, yeah, this show has, like, taken on a life of its own. And in a way, you kind of have to surrender and let it be. Cause we did our bit and now everyone else is rolling with it in their way. But it's been really, really special.
Jimmy Fallon
You're amazing. Congratulations.
Shakira
Aaron Doherty. Adolescence is streaming now on Netflix. We'll be right back with more tonight, too.
Jimmy Fallon
Everybody, come on back.
Joe List
Hey, yo, your hands are clapped. And if I ask her, you feel it? Better answer. Even a big boy for any Cadillac and I be rhyming in designer with that thing in my lap. A couple rappers don't like me if I ain't concerned because I'm more concerned with the fate that I earned. You know, I'm more concerned about the.
Jimmy Fallon
This is cool. Our next guest has his comedy special Small Ball, available in movie theaters one night only on May 21st. Please welcome the very funny Joe List.
Thank you very much. I am a dumb person. No, I am not that dumb. This is the kind of dumb I am. Like, you ever watch a movie with a friend and then after the movie's over, your friend says, you know what that movie was about? And then you say, yes, sharks. And your friend says, no, communism. And you're like, damn it, there were so many sharks in it, though. And then your friend says, it was an allegory. And then you have to go to the bathroom and look up what allegory means. Then you gotta come back and play it off. You're like, you know what? I was thinking about it. That was a film with a secret hidden message, usually political or moral. Right. Those sharks were awfully communist. I like to watch a movie with a really smart person and then re. Watch the same movie with a dumb person. And then I take the smart person's interpretations, and then at least one person thinks I'm smart. It's pretty good. Yeah, I watched the same movie. I'm like, what do you think this movie's about sharks? He's like, it's not. And I'm like, no, it's an alimony, you idiot. Learn how to watch a film. This is cinema. I'm like, those sharks are communists. And he's like, what is communism exactly? And I'm like, I'm not taking follow up questions right now. It's, let me go to the bathroom, I'll come back with some information on communism. But I'm trying to be smart. I'm a dad now. I have a baby at home, which is very exciting. Thank you. Yes, he's a sweet boy, and I try to be a good dad. I took him out to lunch the other day. We were at a restaurant and he was sitting in his high chair and the waitress brought him some food. And I said, say thank you. You gotta teach him the language. He doesn't really know how to say thank you yet, but you wanna teach him manners and the language. So I said, say thank you. And then the waitress went, oh, I'm sorry, thank you. Like she thought I was talking to her. She thought I was like, hey, toots, say thank you to my boy. What is this? He's kind enough to let you bring him food that he throws on the floor immediately. Least you could do is show him some respect. You know, that happens a lot. By the way, if you have a baby that doesn't know how to talk and then you talk to the baby, adults assume you're talking to them. My wife does it and it's her baby, which is weird. Like, the other day, he was eating a banana, and I said, what are you eating, buddy? And then my wife went, it's a banana. And I was like, no, I know, I know. I know about bananas. I'm 43. I was just trying to. Just trying to connect with them, you know, I wasn't like, what the hell is that? You know, I think I'm a good dad. I kept having a. I felt like the universe was testing me leading up to being a father. I kept having run ins with other people's children, which is always awkward. Last year, I was in a hotel, like a really nice hotel, like a high rise hotel. And I got on an elevator and it was me and a dad and his little boy, who's probably two or three. And then the doors closed, we were going down, we stopped at a floor, the doors opened, nobody got off or on. Then the doors closed. And so I said, hey, must have been a ghost. Classic elevator humor. That's not my joke. I didn't write that. That's just an old elevator gag. You guys didn't really laugh. They did not laugh at all. The kids started crying immediately. Just. I was like, hey, it must have been a ghost. The kid was like, what? And I felt bad for the kid, but then the dad goes, hey, come on. And I was like, pal, your kid is a little bitch. I'm sorry. This is not my fault. You're raising a dork who's afraid of ghosts. It was a joke. I tried to make him feel better. I was like, buddy, ghosts don't need the doors to open. They come through the walls. They're boundless spirits that haunt you at night, you know? Didn't help. I could have ruined his life, by the way. I could have been like, you know, falling down, like, you know, as they were leaving, I was like, watch out, he's following you. Keep an eye out. He's right behind you. Stay up. Don't go to bed. That's when he gets you. Urinate in the bed. That's the best way to keep him away. And your father's bed. Protect the family at all costs. Oh, thank you. Thanks. I had another one, too. This happened also last year. I was walking through the Salt Lake City airport and there was a. This time it was a girl having a little tantrum, like a two, three year old girl. And you know when a kid really loses it, like on the ground, kicking and screaming. And then her mother tried to get me involved. I don't know if you ever experienced that. She bent over, she's like, you better get off the ground. There's a nice man right here. He's gonna step on your leg and break it if you don't get up, I swear. And then the baby looks at me like I'm a si. I'm like, I didn't say that. Your mother's projecting. And mother looked at me like. Like. I'm like, you want me to go along with that? Like, that's right, you jerk. Get up or I'll smash your leg. I'm like, you guys are awesome. Thank you guys so much. Thanks for having me. Appreciate it.
