From Studio 6B in Rockefeller center in the heart of New York City, it's a Tonight show starring Jimmy Fallon. Tonight join jimin is guests Henry Winkler, Phineas and Ash. And featuring the legendary Ruth's crew. 2192. Yeah. And now here he is, Jimmy Fallon. Thank you very much. That's a crowd. That's a crowd right there. Thank you very, very much. Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself. Welcome, everybody.
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Tonight Show.
That's right.
Thank you for being here. Well, guys, Congress failed to reach an agreement on a spending deal and now we're just a few minutes away from a government shutdown. Yeah. You know that queasy feeling when your phone battery's at 1%? That's our government right now. That's what you're like. Yeah. This would be the first government shutdown since 2018, not including Joe Biden at the debate. Meanwhile, if the government does shut down, essential workers like TSA agents have to stay on the job without getting paid. One TSA agent was like, I'm not in this for the money. I'm in it for the pat downs. Hello. Come on, you're not even going on the plane. Let me give you a pat down. This is for fun. This is for funsies. Hey, Fonzie's here tonight.
Yeah.
Fonzie, Fonzie, Fonzie, Fonzie.
See what I'm doing?
See what I'm doing? That's right. Congress hasn't reached the spending deal. So tonight at midnight, the federal government will officially shut down. Check out what lawmakers said that they'll do during the shutdown. First, Congressman David Schweickart said, I'm getting a part time job at Santa's workshop. And Congressman Jeff Van Drew said, no way. Same here. And Congresswoman Lois Frankel said, I'm buying little boxes of raisins to hand out to trick or treaters. And Congresswoman Virginia Foxx said, no way. Same here. Then Congressman Pat Harrigan said, I'm gonna ask a couple eating at the Cheesecake Factory if they're looking for a third. And Congressman Michael Roulley said, no way. Same here. And Congressman Jake Elsey said, I'm gonna put on sunglasses and tell women I'm pit bull. And Congressman Keith Self said, no way. Same here. And Congressman Barry Moore said, I'm turning off the lights and cutting my hair with safety scissors. And Congressman Glenn Grothman said, no way. Same here. Next, Congressman Cliff Bentz said, I'm going to have my cute widow cheeks pinched. Then Congressman Raul Ruiz said, no way. Same here. And finally, Congressman John Manion said threesies come up. Dress for fun, come on. Let me some more political news today in Virginia. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called our top military leaders from all over the world to attend a last minute meeting at 8am when they showed up at the meeting, all the military leaders were like, sir, this could have been an email, sir. After Hegsess address, President Trump took the stage and gave a set 73 minute speech that some critics called scattered and rambling. Trump kept going off topic. At one point he asked the generals show of hands who's team Conrad and who's team Jeremiah.
Jeremiah's a very.
Trump's speech was so long that by the end every general had grown an illegal beard. Switching gears, I saw that Hertz just launched a new website that allows customers to buy used cars online. It's fun. You order online from Hertz and then two days later a UPS guy throws a Honda Civic at your front door. Some more business news. I read that the CEO of Spotify is stepping down. Yep, a step down from Spotify. So Pandora, hey get this. Wendy's is adding chicken tenders to their menu and they're calling them Wendy's Tendies. So far they haven't sold any. Cause nobody wants to say Wendy's Tendies. And finally guys, today is the last day of September. So I thought it'd be nice to give you a little recap of the entire month. Here we go.
September, we are moving on. Another month has come and gone. One thing that cannot be topped was.
Finneas
The escalator that stopped.
Jimmy Fallon
Trumpy tried to warn us all. Told us don't take Tylenol. He's an expert, so trust him when.
It comes to Acetam.
Henry Winkler
Acetaminophen. Acetaminophen.
Jimmy Fallon
Trump has been on the attack.
Kimmel banned. But now he's back.
Everything it was in peril.
The biggest comeback since Cracker Barrel.
The golden bachelor's brand new seniors limos, roses too.
The mansion is a gorgeous palace this time full of Cialis.
Halloween is almost here. Scary costumes, pumpkin beer. Grab a wig and get to scaring.
Ash
We'll all go as Phyllis Karen.
Jimmy Fallon
September we say goodbye.
October is a spooky time.
Get excited, have no fear cause Taylor' this album's almost here. We have a great show. He's one of the biggest movie stars in the world. He's getting rave reviews for his new movie the Smashing Machine. Dwayne Johnson is here. Emmy winner and New York Times best selling author Henry Winkler is joining us. And we're gonna talk to Phineas and Ash. Stick around. We'll be right back with Dwayne Johnson. Good Johnson, everybody. Our next guest is an Emmy award.
Winning actor and a New York Times best selling author. His new children's book, Detective Duck the Mystery at Emerald Pond is out. Now. Please welcome one of my favorites, Henry Winkler. Henry, it is always great to see you. You look fantastic. Thank you. You have a milestone birthday coming up.
Henry Winkler
I do. My daughter's birthday is the same as Kirk's. It is today.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, Happy birthday.
Henry Winkler
Happy birthday, Zoe.
Jimmy Fallon
Zoe.
Happy birthday.
Henry Winkler
Yeah, mine is coming up and I'm going to be.
Jimmy Fallon
What age again? How old again?
Henry Winkler
Where's my walker? Yeah, you're gonna be 80. Holy Mountain.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow. Still standing. Yes. You look fantastic.
Henry Winkler
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
What is the secret and how are you going to celebrate?
Henry Winkler
Well, I'm going to celebrate. Zoe is putting together a party.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, good.
Henry Winkler
A family. And we're going to have good food.
Jimmy Fallon
And that's it.
Henry Winkler
And that's it. All I really wanted was my grandchildren to make a homemade art card. You know, a birthday card.
Jimmy Fallon
That's what my wife loves too. She goes, I don't want any gifts. I just want a homemade. Just a card. And that's. You always look at it. You remember that? That's all you want. Yeah.
Henry Winkler
I have them up on my, on my door, in my bedroom.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my gosh.
Henry Winkler
And over the years and you, you just see them all growing.
Jimmy Fallon
Your birthday is a very lucky day for you because I want to say I read in your book that you got the role of Fonzie on my birthday. Yes, it's true.
Henry Winkler
Thank you. It was amazing. A man who is no longer with us, Tom Miller, called me. He said, would you like to play this role? I said, if I can show the other side. When he takes his jacket off, if I can show the emotion, it will be my pleasure.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow.
Henry Winkler
They said yes. I said yes. And I had six lines to begin with. And here I am on your show tonight.
Jimmy Fallon
Is that right? That's, I, I had heard that you, you, you, we both shared that. We both like bundt cakes. Is this true?
Henry Winkler
I do. I love chocolate bundt cake. No icing, melty chocolate chips.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, I, I, I got obsessed with bundt cakes last year. Yeah. And I started making my own bundt cakes.
Henry Winkler
I never made one.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, you have to make a bundle.
Henry Winkler
And you enjoy it.
Jimmy Fallon
It's a work of art. Yeah. It's the people can't believe that I made it. Yeah. Because it looks like a worker they.
Finneas
Go, you didn't make this.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, right now it looks too good.
Henry Winkler
Is it moist?
Jimmy Fallon
It is unbelievably moist.
Henry Winkler
I cannot wait to have a slice of your cake.
Jimmy Fallon
And the secret is, when you get the thing and you make the batter, you get a bang.
Henry Winkler
You gotta bang the bubble and break the desk.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. You bang the bubbles.
And that's how you get the best bubbles right out. It falls right out. Perfect. And, yeah. So I got you my favorite Bundt cake mold.
Henry Winkler
Oh, wow.
Jimmy Fallon
And it says, henry, bang the bubbles. Love, Jimmy. So then. So next time he does say that. Yeah, bang the bubbles.
Henry Winkler
Oh, my God. You can also wear it as a hat.
Jimmy Fallon
No, it's not. No, no, it's not.
Henry Winkler
You can't wear it.
Jimmy Fallon
It's not a hat. No, it's not. But next time when it comes out, you won't. Stacey's gonna freak out.
Henry Winkler
Cause it looks amazing.
Jimmy Fallon
A work of art.
Henry Winkler
This is what I really want to put in my suitcase and take home.
Jimmy Fallon
This is good luck.
Good luck at tsa.
Henry Winkler
What have you got in your bag? This is lovely.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm going to get.
Henry Winkler
And I want to say, you know, the Rock thinks he's so tough, and I. You know, and he thinks, okay, I got feathers.
Jimmy Fallon
No, that's. I got feathers.
You got feathers as well.
You can throw them at me.
Henry Winkler
Well, no, I'm. I'm just. Just don't get out of line.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay, I won't get out of line. Okay. Did you guys talk backstage? Because, I mean, we did the one and only. Did you talk about your.
Henry Winkler
We didn't talk about the one and only, but we did talk about the greatest mov. I was in black. Adam.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Henry Winkler
For 12 seconds.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow.
Yes.
Henry Winkler
I'm on a cell phone.
Jimmy Fallon
Did you meet.
Henry Winkler
I never met him. Now. I did Children's Hospital for five years. Rob Cordry was one of the creators of and also did Ballers.
Jimmy Fallon
So funny. Yep.
Henry Winkler
I said I would like an autographed picture of the Rock for five years. And for five years, I got nothing. Tonight I got my autograph.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. That's what I'm gonna give you.
He's the greatest.
Henry Winkler
He is so big. It's larger than an 8 by 10.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, it's a 9 by 12, I'm telling you. Yeah.
Henry Winkler
Just his arm alone, it's. Wow.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Lovely man. He's a big man. Lovely man. Can I just talk about this, too?
Henry Winkler
What do you say?
Jimmy Fallon
Congratulations. You're in the Television Academy hall of Fame. Obviously. Well deserved, that. Was that a big moment for you?
Henry Winkler
It Was an amazing thing. Now, I've said this before, but I grew up here in Manhattan.
Jimmy Fallon
Absolutely.
Henry Winkler
I'm dreaming about being an actor.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Henry Winkler
I'm eight years old. You do not dream about being in any hall of fame.
Jimmy Fallon
No.
Henry Winkler
And my friend Bob Daley said to the committee, how about Henry? They said, well, no, because he's already in. They assumed I was already in the hall of fame.
Jimmy Fallon
That's hilarious.
Henry Winkler
So the class I was in, Viola Davis and Ryan Murphy, Mike Post, the great composer, Conan o'. Brien.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Henry Winkler
I said to Conan, I said, you've got some of my height.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, of course he got the height from you. Yeah. But this is a big feather in your cap.
Henry Winkler
A great honor in my life and.
Jimmy Fallon
I want to say this is a great read. I know you're not here for this, but if you want to read a great story, being Henry, it's fantastic.
Henry Winkler
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
This was a great book. Great memoir, funny stories, touching stories and a real, like, it makes you go, wow, this guy worked hard. And you got, you got. You put the work in and you put the love in.
Henry Winkler
But you know what? If you put the work and the love in, you get to sit here in this chair.
Jimmy Fallon
No. I'm very lucky to have you here. And I love your children's books, your series. Here we go. Detective Duck, the Mystery at Emerald Pond. What is she up to in this?
Henry Winkler
So my partner Lynn Oliver and I, this is, and I have to brag, this is our 40th children's novel.
Jimmy Fallon
Isn't that cool?
Henry Winkler
And it came out today.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Henry Winkler
She is a little duckling who dreams about being a detective. She is also an environmentalist. And she and her pond squad are invited to the Olympic Games at a pond just over the hill.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Henry Winkler
And they go. And there is a mallard, a handsome duck. And her best friend is a little salamander. Yep, Salamander and the duck and this mallard and our duckling, they make friends. And the salamander is so jealous. So it is about friendship, jealousy, good competition, neighbors. And that your friend can have another friend. And there is room for you.
Jimmy Fallon
It's unbelievable. You are the greatest. Congrats on everything. Thanks again for coming.
Happy birthday. Henry Winkler. Detective Duck, the Mystery at Emerald Pond is out now. More tonight show after the break. Stick around everybody.
Yeah. One and only in the flesh, Senegalese Sierra Leone.
Our next guests are multi platinum artists.
Whose band the Favors just released their debut album, the Dream, which is available everywhere. Please welcome Finneas and Ash.
Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome.
Thank you both for Coming on the show. I'm a big fan of both of you. I'm happy to have you here. I want to get into the favors and how you came up with all this, but first I want to say congrats to both of you. First of all, the Dream debuted Billboard top 200, Spotify's top 10. That's great. Thank you. You're gonna play some live shows. You're tomorrow night, Summer stage in Central Park. That's big. But, Ash, you're getting married in a few weeks. Congratulations.
That's the big move.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
And finish. You just got engaged.
Here we go.
Love is in the air do do do do do do. I mean, congrats. Thank you. How was the engagement? Were you a smooth sailor?
Finneas
I mean, I'm very relieved that it happened.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow.
Finneas
I feel like it really taught me that I'm not cut out to rob banks or steal cars or something, because I was keeping, like, a joyous, happy secret for several weeks, and it ate me alive. And I was, like, lying in bed at night, like, thinking about where the ring was and her not finding whatever it was. So, again, yeah, I was just like. And this is a nice thing that I'm keeping.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes, of course. You're a very honest individual. Yeah. I want to talk about this band, the Favors. Ash, this is your idea. You guys have worked together for a long time. I'm a fan of yours, by the way. Moral of the Story is one of the best jams in the history of music. Some mistakes are made.
That's all right.
That's okay. I love it. It's a good jam. But you sent a text to Finneas and you gave us a screenshot of your text, and it said, you know what we should do? We should form a band, the two of us, put out one album, play a week or two of shows and call it a day, and then finish. You go, um, yes, actually, please. And he said, it's a good idea, isn't it? Ha ha ha. Find a good name, write an album in a week or so. Just cut whatever you make. Yep. Straight to tape.
Ash
Ambitious.
Jimmy Fallon
And then you kind of did exactly this.
Ash
Pretty close. We didn't do it straight to tape. Cause that would have been ridiculous.
Finneas
We're not good enough for straight to tape.
Jimmy Fallon
No, please.
Finneas
I had to do a lot of comps, a lot of editing.
Jimmy Fallon
You did, yeah. But what made you jump right to this and go, yes, I want to do this finish.
Finneas
I just love working with Ash. I was just coming off of finishing My Sister's third album hit me hard and soft. And the idea of then sort of like, being left alone, to my own devices in a room felt sort of like a lot of pressure and lonely. And I just thought, oh, man, I'm such a fan of Ash, and she's such a great songwriter. And I was just like, this is gonna be so exciting. So I actually said, like, one of the texts back. I was like, this solves all my problems. I was really happy about it.
Jimmy Fallon
It solved.
Henry Winkler
Yeah.
Ash
And it solved my problems. I was feeling very lost in music. I was on the verge of kind of quitting forever. And this was a little bit my Hail Mary. I texted Finneas and I was thinking of, what are the ways that I could sort of bring the joy back? And working with him has always been so fulfilling and brought so much joy into my life.
Jimmy Fallon
So I'm so happy you decided not to quit. Yeah, it definitely worked. It's a great record. There's so many good jams on here. The one you're doing tonight at Home Sweet Home is like a disco jam. I love it. The whole record's great. I also love Lake George is another good jam. I love that. That's like a slower version, but I dig this. How did you come up with the name of the favors?
Ash
We really liked the idea of it being a.
Jimmy Fallon
The.
Ash
Something timeless. Oh, yeah. I liked the ballet, the Ivy, but those were taken, obviously.
Jimmy Fallon
The Beatles.
Ash
It's really a. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Why couldn't you get the Beatles?
That would be a great name.
Ash
But Finnea sent the favors over and somehow it had not been taken. And we really love the idea that, like, there's only the favors you'll do for the people closest to you. We each have very small, you know, close friends to us, so it was also very sentimental.
Finneas
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
When you. When you dropped your first single, everyone loved it. And I was like, wait, did this. Did you just really work for two weeks, or did you have a secret? Did you work on this for a couple years?
Finneas
No. I mean, we privately, over the course of two years, put it together, but the actual sort of, like, days we spent together, I think two years ago, right now, around Halloween, was actually the first writing trip. Ash lives in Nashville. Claudia and I live in la. So Ash flew out to do some days together, and we. It was so fun. We were, like, writing these first couple songs, and then we were just going to Halloween parties every night. It was really a fun way to start the record.
Ash
We went to this insane Halloween party. He took me to And Margot Robbie was there.
Jimmy Fallon
Hello. And just a gasp, just from her. I know.
Ash
Everyone's so shocked. And once in a while, on a good day, if I dress up real nice, someone will be like, you kind of look like Margot Robbie. So I was, like, four drinks in, and I went up to Margot and I said, hi. So sometimes.
Jimmy Fallon
So sometimes.
Ash
So sometimes people say we look kind of like. Well, you can't say that.
Jimmy Fallon
No.
Ash
Like, you're not supposed to say that ever. And she was so nice. She was like, oh, my gosh, we should start a band.
Jimmy Fallon
That's cool.
Finneas
Ash also did this dressed as Marie Antoinette.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay. All right. There you go. Okay.
Finneas
So I remember sort of seeing being like, oh, there's Margot over there. And Ash was like, I'm gonna go say hi. And I just remember seeing, like, the beehive hair, like, walking over to Margot.
Jimmy Fallon
That's so funny.
Ash
He must have been so nervous. Like, don't embarrass me. You hadn't met her yet.
Finneas
No, we'd not met her. We'd already done the song for the Barbie movie. The Barbie movie had come out, but we'd not ever met her because premieres didn't line up that way.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow. Wow.
Finneas
So Ash was like, do you want to meet Margot?
Jimmy Fallon
I introduced him.
Yeah. You want to meet my buddy Margo? We're starting a band together. Yeah. Yeah. Well, congrats on everything in here. And I know you said that you're just going to do one album and, you know, a couple things, but it's working so well. Would you think about maybe doing another album.
People?
It's great. Well, I guess you're just having fun.
Ash
I think it's special knowing that it's its own thing. And then, you know, if we get to create more one day, maybe it's in secret for a while.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Okay, good.
Phineas and Ask the Dream is available right now. Stick around, everybody.
Yeah. 9 5. When I made the World Village.
My face is Henry Winkler. Mark Kerr. Phineas and Ass. The Babies and the Roots right there from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Good night, everybody. Thank you, Sam.
