From Studio 6P in Rockefeller center in the heart of New York City, this is Tonight show starring Gimme Malice. Tonight joins Gimme the guest Bobby Mallor, Jason Isaac Sarna dog. And featuring the legendary roots. 21:23. And now here he is, Jimmy, you very much welcome, welcome, welcome, Enjoy yourself. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Tonight Show. You're here. Thank you for watching. Well, guys, just hours after his new tariffs went into effect this afternoon, President Trump announced a 90 day pause which made the stock market skyrocket. Trump was like, I just saved the economy for me. You're welcome, you're welcome. I just say that I. Yeah, the market just had the best day in years, jumping nearly 3,000 points. Who knew we'd reach a point where the economy feels less stable than Kanye West? People can't handle the daily swings in the market. Right now, having a diversified portfolio means you're taking Xanax, volume and Klonopin. Got a lot of applause. Well, with the terrorist pause, the US now has three months to work out all of its relationships with all these countries. Basically, our economy now mimics the exact plot of 90 Day Fiance. Think about it. It's the same thing. Trump said that he paused tariffs because people were getting yippee and queasy. Then Trump tried naming the other seven dwarves. Yippee, Queasy, Greasy, Gassy, Smiley, and Spock. Yippee and queasy were also the seating sections at Trump's wedding. Hi, I'm in the queasy section. Yippee and queasy. Sounds like a new Pixar movie about Don Jr. And Eric. Yep. Trump's trying his best to ease everyone's concerns about the economy. This morning he posted Be cool. Everything is going to work out well. Be cool isn't what you say to fix the economy. It's what you say when you and your friend are trying to sneak outside food into a movie theater. You're walking weird, dude. You're walking weird. I'm not. Why are you walking sideways? It's going two for Minecraft. My mom used to sneak in like a 2 liter bottle of soda and just open it slowly. It's the longest I go. Just open it fast. If we get it over with, it sounds like you're grilling hamburger. Well, guys, as tariffs raise the cost of things made overseas, Trump said iPhones can be made in the U.S. yeah, Trump. TRUMP wants American made iPhones. They're gonna be a little different though. Watch this. Apple is proud to offer its first ever American made iPhone. It's the same iPhone you love, but instead of Siri, we're introducing D. You can ask him questions like, hey, Donnie, what is the weather today? Climate change is a hoax invented by China. Donnie, where's the nearest gas station? Your car wouldn't need gas if you drove a Tesla. Donnie, play abracadabra by Lady Gaga. Abracadabra, Mona Na. Like a bing bong, bing bong, bing bong, bing bong bong. Donnie, what's on my shopping list? Milk, bread, Canada and Greenland. And Donnie, remind me to pick up my kids from school. There's no more education department. Your kids are busy making iPhones. The American iPhone coming soon for $6,000. Oh, my goodness, Johnny, I'm making it. Well, switching gears, Texas is investigating Kellogg's over its healthy products containing artificial flavors and dyes. Come on, please. You should know it's not healthy when they have to spell fruit with two O's. I mean, give me. Come on. Finally, I read that Trader Joe's new mini pastel colored tote bags are being resold online for over $1,000. If you're paying 1,000 bucks for a Trader Joe's tote bag, you must be higher than the cashiers that work at Trader Joe's. We have a great show. Give it up for the Roots of Money Number One. Second and None. A sufficient title for me to beat champion of any event in which I present best ever to him and Martin Pax Square. Great crowd. What a show we have for you tonight. He is starring in the new film the Amateur, which opens in theaters and IMAX this Friday. Rami Malek is here this evening. Plus he stars in the hit HBO series the White Lotus. Also, you can see him in the new movie Words of War, which is in theaters May 2nd. Jason Isaacs is joining us tonight. He was great. He's phenomenal. She is a very funny comedian and actor who has a new memoir out April 29th called this American Woman. Zarna Garg is here. Super funny. Great show. Hey, speaking of books, I have a children's book coming out just in time for Mother's Day. It's called Papa Doesn't Do Anything. Cut some time. Mom's perfect. Perfect for her Father's Day. Yeah. You mean fake cake. Yes, perfect. Yeah. So pre order this if you want it. Look how. Look at this. Wow, that's thick. Yeah, it's perfect for Mother's Day. Father's Day. Pre order it wherever you pre order your books or use this handy QR code. Ooh, look at that bleeplorp. Yeah, exactly. Just bleep, blorp it right there. How much is it? It's gonna be fun. Let me just check out $312.
Rami Malek
Wow.
Jimmy Fallon
It's made in China. It's made in China. Topical. Topical. Topical reference. Guys, I know a lot of people find math boring. Do you find this really? Yeah, they find math. So we've updated math to make equations be about stuff that you can relate to. It's time for popular mathematics. Check it out. Popular mathematics. Mathematics. Let's take a look at our first equation here. If you take a bunny rabbit. Sure. Plus edibles, it equals the White House Easter bunny. Scary. Frightening. It's scary. Here's another one. Two plus two minus the Department of education equals seven. You see? Understand? Yeah. Here's another one here. The blazing sun plus a nuclear explosion plus a lighthouse equals your mom's iPhone Flashlight at a restaurant. I can't. How much are the fries? The French fries? These are equations. Yeah, These are math equations. So if you take a map plus a bingo card plus a blindfold plus darts, it equals Trump's tariffs. Oh, 25%. 15. Here's another one. Gandhi plus Martin Luther King Jr. Plus JFK equals what your friend thinks they sound like in their post about how they're leaving social media. I'm leaving. I'm getting away. I'm digital detox. Here's another one. Gasoline plus nail polish remover plus Sharpie markers equals your Uber driver's cologne. Wow. Can we roll the roof down?
Rami Malek
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
And finally, reading a book plus eating KFC during women's March Madness tournament equals Paige buckets. Oh, come on. We love. By the way, we love Paige Beckers. Paige Beckers is the best. Congrats to her and UConn on winning the national championship. Paige Beckers. Man, I. I wish I could celebrate with. With. With her and. And hold the trophy, but that'll never happen. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Paige. That's right.
Rami Malek
Look at that.
Jimmy Fallon
Paige Becker. Paige. Say that. Wow. This is great. You guys want to see it? You guys want to hear it? Go for it. There she goes. Head Ventures, everybody. We'll be right back on our tonight show, where the champions go. Come on back. Our first guest is an Oscar winner starring in the new film the Amateur, which opens in theaters and IMAX this Friday. Please welcome Rami Malek. That's what I'm talking about. You're a stud. You look great.
Jason Isaacs
You look great.
Jimmy Fallon
Welcome back, my friend. Thanks so much for being here.
Jason Isaacs
Oh, come on.
Jimmy Fallon
It's been a while. I miss you.
Jason Isaacs
I miss you.
Jimmy Fallon
Come on. Every week. You should just be here.
Jason Isaacs
Every week to be with you guys. Every week.
Jimmy Fallon
I know. I mean, come on. Yes. I was looking at. No, the best. I was looking up some info on you for this interview, and I realized you've been acting for 20 years.
Jason Isaacs
No.
Jimmy Fallon
Does that make sense?
Jason Isaacs
I didn't know that.
Jimmy Fallon
That's crazy, right? That's not true. Right?
Jason Isaacs
I don't.
Jimmy Fallon
It is.
Jason Isaacs
It must be true.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Jason Isaacs
And you've been here for over 10 years.
Jimmy Fallon
That's true. Yeah, exactly. And you've been a great guest on our show, which I. But I was trying to think, like, what was your big break? Cause you won an Emmy. You won an Oscar, obviously, for Bohemian Rhapsody. You won a Golden Globe. Nah, no big deal. No big deal. You won an Oscar. I can't believe it. And a Golden Globe. I still can't believe it. And then you won an Emmy for Mr. Robot.
Jason Isaacs
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Was that your big break? Was it Mr. Robot?
Jason Isaacs
It was. I loved. Yeah. A lot of people think Mr. Robot was my big break. I remember auditioning four or five times for this series called the Pacific. Yeah. Band of Brothers.
Jimmy Fallon
Tom Hanks. Yes.
Jason Isaacs
Tom Hanks.
Jimmy Fallon
Unbelievable.
Jason Isaacs
Yes. Walk into the room. It's the last audition. It's so tense in there. There's a, you know, a boardroom full of executives. And Tom stands up and he goes, loved you'd. And Night at the museum. Big fan. And I look at him and I'm just like, likewise, Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks. And I sit down and do this audition with a fellow actor, Joe Mazzello. And, you know, usually they film these things to make sure they go on record. Some young casting.
Jimmy Fallon
Video cameras. Right?
Jason Isaacs
Video cameras. Kind of a straight shot. And what I'm noticing is that this older gentleman starts kind of panning around, and he's doing this really intricate camera work. It's kind of distracting because I'm trying to give.
Jimmy Fallon
Hey, buddy.
Jason Isaacs
Figure it. Figure it. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm auditioning. I'm nervous.
Jason Isaacs
I'm nervous as hell. I'm so close to getting my biggest. I look over, I'm like, oh, wait, he's. He's actually doing a really good job. Oh, yeah. No, that's for a reason. That's Steven Spielberg. Oh, my God. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
He was filming it.
Jason Isaacs
He was filming it. And I thought, that's the moment. It was a make or break moment. And that was my make or break.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, that's your big break. Spielberg. Doesn't get cooler than that.
Jason Isaacs
No, it does not. I still can't believe this. 20 years. Oh my God.
Jimmy Fallon
Isn't that wild? Bud, I'm. Thank you. I'm happy I'm friends with you for this long too. We ran into each other at an event. Do you remember this? One of the last times we saw each other? We went to this really fancy charity thing and we went. And you came up to me and you're like, dude, I gotta talk to you. I go, what's up, bud? You go, you gotta help me, man. I don't know what to do. I'm dressed as the. You were wearing a white tuxedo.
Jason Isaacs
I was wearing.
Jimmy Fallon
Everyone else was wearing black tuxedos and you were wearing a white tuxedo. And you were dressed as.
Jason Isaacs
Well, I have black. Yeah. I have black trousers on.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Jason Isaacs
White top. Go on.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. You were dressed. Dressed as all the waiters.
Jason Isaacs
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, yeah. There's nothing we can do. I was gonna take gears off. Yeah. But then I would be dressed as the waiter.
Jason Isaacs
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
So all we had to do was just laugh. It was just the best night. We made it really fun. But you could always come up to me.
Jason Isaacs
I can't believe you remember that, but I love that. You have the best memory.
Jimmy Fallon
It made me laugh. You have the best memory. Congrats on the new movie, the Amateur. This is a big deal. Go see it in theaters and imax, by the way. You produce it, you star in it. It's an action thriller. Is this from. Cause you were in the James Bond movie and you're like, I gotta do that.
Jason Isaacs
That's exactly what it was. I see.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Was it.
Jason Isaacs
He knows everything.
Jimmy Fallon
I know everything.
Jason Isaacs
I thought, you know, after doing it was this genre, I thought I'd never have an opportunity to crack. Right. That was reserved for the Daniel Craigs, the Tom Cruise's. And I thought, what's my way in? And I thought if I come up with this everyday man who you least expect to go on and do something extraordinary, it could put you right there in the driver's seat as you sat and watched. And I don't think we've seen an action thriller like this quite possibly ever. So tried to flip the switch on.
Jimmy Fallon
It, but he actually is an amateur.
Jason Isaacs
He is a complete amateur. I mean, he can't even fire. He can't fire a weapon to save his life. Yes. But he is incredibly smart. He's brilliant. And he uses his ingenuity to take down the killers of the people he loves the most in life.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. And I heard that you had advice from the one and only Tom Cruise, one of the greatest actors of all time. But also action stars. This guy knows action.
Jason Isaacs
I mean, if anybody knows action, it's Tom Cruise.
Jimmy Fallon
What'd he tell you? Like, jump off a building?
Jason Isaacs
He said, what are you doing next? I go, I'm doing an act. He goes, well, you're gonna need weapons training. And I go, well, it's called the Amateur. And he goes, no, no, you're definitely gonna need weapons training. I'm like, tom died.
Jimmy Fallon
The whole premise is.
Jason Isaacs
The whole premise is he doesn't do any of that.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, you need it. Yeah.
Jason Isaacs
He goes, I promise you, you're gonna need weapons training.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Jason Isaacs
And then even later on, I got an email and it was titled Weapons Training.
Jimmy Fallon
You're like, okay, Tom, I'll do it. Tom, do it. I have to do it. It's done. It's really great. It's really fun. It's a good action thriller. Espion, Rami Malek, everybody. You got it. Round the Amateur opens in theaters and IMAX this Friday. More Tonight show after the break.
Rami Malek
Stick around.
Jimmy Fallon
Everybody watching. Do what they do. Deliver definition of improvement. Make certain out of that. Our next guest is a very talented actor who stars in HBO's hit series the White Lotus, which is streaming now on max. You can also see him in the new film Words of War, which is in theaters May 2nd. Please welcome Jason Isaac. Jason Isaac, welcome to the show. You are amazing. You are amazing. What? Congrats on the White Lotus. Oh, my gosh.
Rami Malek
It was.
Jason Isaacs
You were great.
Rami Malek
I want all the credit, but you may have noticed there's a genius called Mike White who writes and directs some other good actors. This is the last interview of an eight week juggernaut press tour.
Jimmy Fallon
Is that correct?
Rami Malek
I'm so thrilled to be finishing with you.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm honored to have you. Oh, we're so happy. White Lotus is the most watched season of the show. Broke all sorts of viewing records. I want to get into. It was great. I want to get into everything. Everyone's. I'm going home.
Rami Malek
It's fine.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm good. Hang out here. Everyone's obsessed with the Ratliff family since the very beginning. I mean, we also love the accents. Parker Posey was here talking about it. Your accent, it's a North Carolina.
Rami Malek
You're being very generous. The Internet was concerned with two things. My penis and my accent.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes, that's correct. Well, I was going to get to that.
Jason Isaacs
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Rami Malek
Since this last interview, I think I can tell you I was wearing a prosthetic tongue.
Jimmy Fallon
Your Tongue is not real.
Rami Malek
Durham, North Carolina is hard to get your lips around because my real tongue is small, green, shriveled and shaped like a pretzel.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay, perfect. Yes, genius. But how is it getting that accent down?
Rami Malek
Well, it's weird because Durham, North Carolina doesn't sound like South Carolina. It doesn't sound like Charleston, doesn't sound anywhere else. But people all over the Internet were going, this accent sounds Australian, sounds English. Actually, they've got two vowel sounds that are English. So there are a couple of sounds, like the O sound. That's why Bill's going, piper, no. And I say, I love you so much. That's a weird English sound. Right. And our sound is also. But I love an accent and I. I've been to Durham quite a lot. You know, I was in South Carolina shooting the Patriot and I played golf around there. And so lots of people on the Internet going, he doesn't sound Southern at all. He doesn't sound Texan. I know I don't sound Texan because I'm not meant to be protected.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Rami Malek
But people from Durham were writing going, that's weird. He sounds exactly like my dad.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, that's exactly right. You nailed it.
Rami Malek
I'm from Liverpool, so I grew up talking like that. That's my natural accent, you know. And then, and then I moved around a lot.
Jimmy Fallon
I didn't know this. Yeah.
Rami Malek
I went to London when I was a kid. I was very self conscious about talking like that because that's, you know, people make fun of you. So I went very Jason Statham overnight. I went to university. They all sounded like Hugh Grant. So I went double barreled, you know, and so I thank God my social weakness has turned into. I can monetize it slightly because it's a bit of a disease.
Jimmy Fallon
I didn't even know that you could do so many.
Rami Malek
I've heard you do many a voice.
Jimmy Fallon
I tried, but I mean, I actually, I have a map here. Well, how.
Rami Malek
Where did that come from? How peculiar.
Jimmy Fallon
Well, just wondering.
Rami Malek
Almost as if someone had talked about this before they came on the air.
Jimmy Fallon
I want. I'm very prepared.
Rami Malek
Yeah, let's have a little tour of the British Isles. What you may not know is in Britain, you open your mouth, everybody knows not only where you're from, but where you're from in terms of education, how you're trying to be perceived and stuff. So you're so talented. Accents which are music. After all, I've heard you sing. I thought maybe we'd do a tour of the British Isles and see if you can. Because I've heard you, Liverpool, and what you're doing is the Beatles. Now the Beatles talk like that originally, but then they want to sound like they came from California so they started leaning back on it. But that's not a Liverpool accent. So let's start with Liverpool.
Jimmy Fallon
Where I can find Liverpool? Here we go.
Rami Malek
One of the. One of the haute cuisine dishes you get is chicken and chips. Could you do chicken and chips?
Jimmy Fallon
Chicken and chips.
Rami Malek
Chicken and chips.
Jimmy Fallon
Chicken and chips.
Rami Malek
Now like half an hour away. Is Manchester there, where the oasis come from? Come from there. Can you do. So the accent in Manchester. Yorkshire comes from when they had factories and had to be heard over the fact. So over the conveyor belt. Can you over articulate like that?
Jimmy Fallon
Over, over articulate.
Rami Malek
Go a little bit further north. That's. That's. That's very good. You need some orthodontist work. But anyway, now Sting, the. The famous. He's from Newcastle where they. Where they sing like that. Now most of the sentences go like that and end up in the air like that. Can you do that?
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, yeah. Is that. Do that? Yeah, yeah.
Rami Malek
That'S very, very good. Now let's go jump down south. Birmingham, the most polluted city in the world for a long time. The heart of the industrial revolution. They all got by sinus infections. So generations later on, they can't really breathe through the nose like that. Can you do that?
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, that's interesting.
Rami Malek
Sounds like huge.
Jimmy Fallon
No doubt like that, but do it like that.
Rami Malek
I'm slightly worried you're having a stroke on it.
Jimmy Fallon
Sorry. But it happens every night.
Rami Malek
Let's jump up the. To Glasgow because I've heard you Scottish. It's fantastic. So I'm a huge fan of yours on the Tonight Show. Is that.
Jimmy Fallon
That's great.
Rami Malek
Jump across the Belfast. And the Tonight show is almost exactly the same, Mr. Carson, but not quite.
Jimmy Fallon
Thank you. The Tonight Show. Yeah. Not quite. Is it? No. That terrible.
Rami Malek
Now I feel this is cruel.
Jimmy Fallon
No, no, no, no. Not being right.
Rami Malek
But what you can do. If you put them all together in a sentence, you sound a little bit like Don Cheadle in Ocean to let. But anyway, there we go.
Jimmy Fallon
That is how you do it, Jason Isaacs. That is how you do it. Thank you for doing that.
Rami Malek
I love Don Cheadle. I hope you. It's a cheap gag.
Jimmy Fallon
Don't. He loves it. He's got a great. Let's talk White Lotus. You are just so phenomenal and I feel like you're almost doing. Almost like. I know it's a great cast, but your scenes are almost like a one man show, because I felt so.
Rami Malek
He doesn't connect with anyone. He's so lonely and terrified.
Jimmy Fallon
He's by himself. Even when he's with his family, he's.
Rami Malek
By himself, drugged out of his head into a stupor. And then there was work.
Jimmy Fallon
But, I mean, you do it very well because it's subtle. It's.
Rami Malek
Honestly. I called. My brother's a psychiatrist, and I called him and I said, jeff, what happens if you chug lorazepam? And he went, you're asleep. And I went, okay, not that helpful. Whatever. What if I were not asleep? He goes, you're falling asleep. And I went, again, it's a television show. He went, then you're on your own. So I phoned Mike and I said, I'm really worried about being the boring idiot in the corner falling asleep. And he went, don't worry, it'll be fine. I think what he meant was, I'll just cut away from you if you are.
Jimmy Fallon
No. Yeah.
Rami Malek
So I just had to be the guy, think and trust Mike's brilliant storytelling and be terrified of my life and losing my reputation and that my wife and my children are never going to survive and hope that the audience got that and got how I was on the edge of total collapse.
Jimmy Fallon
You know, we totally did. Everyone got it. Everyone loved it. I felt so bad. And I go, oh, my gosh.
Rami Malek
And then, to be honest with you, the shooting was great. I love the people I work with, but it was. He's very, very miserable. Acting isn't really pretend, as you know. You know, you try and be the thing as best you can.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, we just.
Rami Malek
A little sketch backstage.
Jimmy Fallon
You know what you're doing and. Thank you.
Rami Malek
Yeah. And, you know, I was really lonely. Lonely and miserable.
Jimmy Fallon
That last scene on the boat, when you're. When you're talking to. And you go, hey, guys, we're gonna have to get through this. Like, it's gonna.
Rami Malek
I think he's gonna be all right at that point. He's so stressed out by his whole life. He didn't realize that before he got there. He's the only guy that doesn't want any kind of spiritual enlightenment. He just wants to work out and overeat most of the time. But he's the guy. Ironically, because Mike's such a brilliant writer who is brought face to face with his essential self, he loses everything that he is. His reputation, his money, his power, his status in the family. And this when the monk tells him that you Rejoin water. You're a drop alone in life. And he. He takes some comfort that on the boat he thinks, you know what? Thank God I'm just an ordinary person. I'm not better than anybody else. It's not a message show. It's a brilliant show. But his bit of the story is a beautiful thing. And he looks at these people who are not going to be able to survive. I don't know, they're all going to have to get jobs. I see Victoria. I want to see Parker Posey cleaning a toilet somewhere.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes, yes.
Rami Malek
But he looks at me and he thinks, this is exactly what you need. You're going to be all right. And there's something incredibly beautiful about that.
Jimmy Fallon
I thought it was phenomenal. You were so perfect. It was great. Great job. Cheers to a great season. I thought we could have a toast. Jason Isaac, Season three of the White Lotus is streaming now on max. We'll be right back with zone to go. Now here you go first. We'll be right back. Run fast as the verbal assault to arouse. Our next guest is a very funny comedian and actor who you can see in a new movie called A Nice Indian Boy, which is in theaters now. And her memoir, this American Woman is available April 29th. Everyone, please welcome Zarna Gar. Welcome back to the show, Zarna. You made your late night television debut here doing standup on our show.
Zarna Garg
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
And since then, now you have a memoir out, you have a movie out. I mean, congratulations on all of this. This is fantastic.
Zarna Garg
Thank you, thank you. I'm so excited to be back.
Jimmy Fallon
You were telling me that it was your kids that encouraged you to do stand up.
Zarna Garg
That's right. So if you hate my comedy, blame them.
Jimmy Fallon
No, no, no. That's not what you're.
Zarna Garg
Only a literal child would think comedy is a job. I had to remind them. I was like, we're Indian. We don't believe in fun. That is not something you believe.
Jimmy Fallon
We don't believe in that stuff.
Zarna Garg
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Are they happy that they were right?
Zarna Garg
They're very impressed with themselves because they found a way to get their mom out of the house nights and weekends.
Jimmy Fallon
Kind of genius. Your daughter's actually in the audience tonight. She is? Yeah. There she is. Ah, come on. Oh, gorgeous. Proud of your mom? Come on. Yeah, I know she's working.
Zarna Garg
Just so you know. Cause I'm a big believer in child labor.
Jimmy Fallon
Good for you. That's fantastic. What jobs did you do before standup?
Zarna Garg
I was a lawyer. I am a lawyer, actually. I'm licensed to practice in New York, But.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, great.
Zarna Garg
No, no, no, no. I try to forget that. Bad at it. At one point, all my clients were in jail.
Jimmy Fallon
That's terrible.
Zarna Garg
They were guilty. But that's not the point.
Jimmy Fallon
That's not the point.
Rami Malek
No.
Jimmy Fallon
You didn't do your job. Yeah.
Zarna Garg
The judge would call me in and be like, do you know what a defense lawyer does? And I was like, but you and I both know he did it.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Rami Malek
First.
Jimmy Fallon
Come on, give me a break. Let me slide. Yeah.
Zarna Garg
And then I was a seattle mom for 16 years.
Jimmy Fallon
Good for you. Yeah, Love that. Did a great job. But you found a ton of success doing Stand Up. You opened for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The Restless Leg tour. By the way, that was the first time I met you. Yes, and you were. And you destroyed. You had a great set that night. But we also celebrated your birthday that night.
Zarna Garg
Yes, it happened to me the day of my birthday at the Beacon at the Beacon Theater. And Tira and Amy had planned a Post show celebration that I wasn't actually aware of. But a lot of the SNL cast was. Ended up being this star studded birthday party. And I remember that you saved the day, Jimmy, because they brought this big cake out with all these candles. And I was like, trying to blow the candles by waving my hand. Cause post Covid, we're not sure how to do that anymore. And you were like, what are you doing? Just blow on the cake.
Jason Isaacs
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Blow it out. Make a wish. Let's go. And the wishes came true. Uh, let's talk about the memoir. It's called this American Woman. Uh, how'd you land on this American Woman as the title?
Zarna Garg
So the. The title. Because my whole life before I ever stepped foot in America, I got in trouble for having a big mouth and having. And having opinions and. And being argumentative. And anytime I voiced a preference, people were like, who do you think you are? An American woman.
Jimmy Fallon
Is that right?
Zarna Garg
Yeah. Because any negative influence in India is like, it must have come from.
Jimmy Fallon
I'll take it. I'll take it.
Zarna Garg
But I. But I've dedicated this book to all American women because they taught me that I have a voice and I have a right to use it.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Good for you. You do.
Zarna Garg
And now I'm so American, I even monetize it.
Jimmy Fallon
You have this one chapter in the book at the beginning of the chapter where you actually. It starts off with a personal ad that you. You put out. Yeah, this is a real personal ad.
Zarna Garg
Yeah. That's how I met my husband 27 years ago.
Jimmy Fallon
Can I Just read some of this here. This is. You said to some, I am too short or too plump, too dark or too argumentative. But enough about me. This is what I need from you. A husband and a partner. Somebody who is ambitious but not ruthless, confident but not arrogant, and humble but not timid. Most of all, he is honest. I am on a mission to build a very successful life. And you must be ready to go with me. Only contact me if you want to get married. No friends. Then you put kindly include your most recent tax returns and medical records. That's funny.
Zarna Garg
Thank you for that. They all got it. They're like, that's it, buddy.
Jimmy Fallon
And it worked.
Zarna Garg
27 years later.
Jimmy Fallon
There you go. Come on. Honesty.
Zarna Garg
Yeah. You know, people complicate dating and marriage and everything in America is so complicated. I don't think it needs to. I really believe the universe wants to give you what you want. But you have to make the ask very simple and clear. You can't complicate, like, three things. What are the three things you want? I wanted a brilliant man who was ambitious and hardworking. Now, did he come with a wicked mother?
Jimmy Fallon
Turn it. Turn it. Yes. We love. We are so happy. 27 years.
Zarna Garg
He's getting nervous for my mother.
Jimmy Fallon
I know. I do. I'm Irish Catholic. I get guilty about everything. I want to talk about a nice Indian boy. Congratulations. It's got 97 on Rotten Tomatoes. That's fresh. That's great. Great reviews. At first you weren't sure you wanted to do it.
Zarna Garg
No, I didn't want to do it. I was sure I didn't want to do it.
Jimmy Fallon
Well, you did not want to do it.
Zarna Garg
No, because it's an excellent script and the makers are so good. The guys who made the movie are so amazing. Great guys. I'm not an actor, so, you know, I said to them, no, this movie belongs to, like, Meryl Strength. You know, she should play the mother. You just roll her into a tanning salon. She should play this role. She can do this.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Zarna Garg
And then my director in the movie said to me, you know, this is the role of a mother who is disappointed in her husband and kids. And I said, step aside, Meryl.
Jimmy Fallon
I got this. I got this.
Zarna Garg
Start polishing that Oscar now.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, that's right. Zarnagar for the Academy Award. How do we set up the movie for everybody?
Zarna Garg
So the movie is the story of an Indian family, the Gavaskar family. Their son, my son in the movie is gay. He's dating a white boy. But all is not lost. My son is a doctor in the movie. I, I had to tell the director, I was like, you can't give me every problem. Something's gotta go right for this woman.
Jimmy Fallon
So.
Zarna Garg
But it's a very love filled story of how this family is trying to embrace the gay relationship and the white boyfriend and everything they do is wrong because they just don't know what they're doing. And it's a very, very heartfelt movie and I encourage everybody to go watch it in movie theaters.
Jimmy Fallon
Congrats. You just got a big extension too. Yes, congrats on everything.
Zarna Garg
We broke so many records this past week. This little movie. That's a gem is now getting into more movie theaters because we're making so much money in theaters.
Jimmy Fallon
