Jimmy Fallon
From Studio 6B in Rockefeller center in the heart of New York City, Tonight show starring Jimmy Fallon. I join Jimmy's guest, Bob Odenburg, Margaret Qualley, featuring Bill Murray and the legendary Ruth Crump. 2175. And now, here he is. Jimmy, come on now. That's what I'm talking about. Thank you. Thank you very much. Enjoy yourself. Welcome.
Bob Odenkirk
Welcome, everybody. Welcome, welcome. Welcome to the Tonight Show.
Jimmy Fallon
You're here. I appreciate it.
Bob Odenkirk
Thank you for watching. Well, guys, tomorrow President Trump is meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska. And Trump is confident that he can get Putin to make a deal. Yeah. Trump thinks he can change Putin's mind about the war. That's why he's already calling it the Summer I Turned Putin. But today, Trump said, whether we make a deal or not, the important thing is to distract Jeffrey Epstein. That's the. Yeah. Trump and Putin have only met one on one twice before. One in 2017 at the G20 summit and then again on season three of Love Island. Yeah. The meeting will just be Trump, Putin, and two translators who will never be heard from again. Trump and Putin are meeting at a military base in Alaska. That's after they were turned down to meet on the Kelce Brothers podcast. Well, speaking of that, last night, Taylor Swift joined Travis and Jason Tyson's podcast to discuss her upcoming album and officially announce her Orange era. Someone heard Orange era and was like, stay in your lane, girl. Stay. Stay in. Well, get this. The Mars Candy Company said that next year they're releasing Skittles and M and Ms. Without synthetic dyes. Yep. Now, Skittles are like, taste the gravel rainbow.
Jimmy Fallon
You get a great one.
Bob Odenkirk
Oh, you gotta try the dark gray one. Mars also said that they're removing the dyes from Starburst. Americans are like, well, while you're at it, just remove the yellow ones in general. You guys see, this proposed bill in Florida is hoping to ban hotels, golf courses, and pickleball courts in state parks. Here to share his opinion on this is a guy who loves pickleball way too much. Connor Marshall. Welcome to the show, Connor. Yeah.
Connor Marshall
Ella, Great to be here.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Nice.
Connor Marshall
Guys, quick cue.
Bob Odenkirk
Jimmy.
Connor Marshall
Are you a pickler?
Bob Odenkirk
No, I've only played, like, once. So this proposal.
Connor Marshall
No, that's all you need to get bitten by the pickle. Do you know what a dink shot is?
Bob Odenkirk
I don't really.
Connor Marshall
I'm telling you, if you're not dinking, Jimmy, you better start dinking. Promise me you'll start dinking. Just say you'll dink. Give me a wink. If you'll dink one wink. One dink.
Bob Odenkirk
Yeah. Yes. Fine. Fine. Just stop saying dink.
Jimmy Fallon
You will not regret it.
Connor Marshall
Oh, let's talk paddle. What you whacking with these days?
Bob Odenkirk
Like I said, I. Like I said, I don't really.
Connor Marshall
You know, this here's my weapon of ch. This is the Engage Pursuit MX 6.0. And let me stop you right there, Jimmy. I ain't letting you use her, all right?
Jimmy Fallon
This baby's all mine.
Bob Odenkirk
I wasn't gonna ask.
Connor Marshall
I'm talking about a carbon fiber face polymer, honeycomb center, 16 millimeter thickness for primo control. And yes, Tariq, the grip is contoured and sweat absorbent.
Bob Odenkirk
Huh.
Connor Marshall
Would you just look at this edge guard? It is aerodynamic with minimal drag, which means. Say it with me, Quest. Less turbulence at high swing speeds.
Bob Odenkirk
What?
Connor Marshall
You know, I didn't realize that tonight's show was full of paddy daddies.
Bob Odenkirk
None of us are patty daddies. I. I just want to talk about this Florida bill.
Connor Marshall
You know what? Here's what I'm gonna do. I've got a standing reservation at a court in Jersey. You take the transit three hours south, hop on a Greyhound bus for 45 minutes, where you rent a car from the local enterprise, drive another hour northwest, walk down that wooded trail for three miles. Just over that clearing, you'll find the court. It is heaven. I'll put you, Tariq, and Quest down for tonight. Make sure you wear bug spray because those bloodsuckers are out. Quest, you in?
Margaret Qualley
No.
Bob Odenkirk
Great.
Connor Marshall
Tariq?
Bob Odenkirk
No.
Connor Marshall
Aw, fantastic. Jimmy. No, it's perfect. I'll head there now. But before I go, let's just harmonize pickleball for live.
Jimmy Fallon
I love you guys.
Bob Odenkirk
Sorry about that. A guy who loves pickleball way too much. Everybody. Wow. Here. We get it. We get it. We get it. Wow. Wow. He's still going. He's still going. Yeah, he can't stop.
Jimmy Fallon
All right, sorry.
Bob Odenkirk
He loves you. He can't wait to play. Oh, my God. Nice. Faked himself very good. Thank you very much. And finally, he faked himself out. That last one was good. Finally. Oh, there he goes. I read that a growing number of adults are going to sleepaway camp to make friends on visiting day. Their parents are like, we're never getting grandchildren, are we?
Jimmy Fallon
We have a great show. Give it up for the Roots, everybody.
Bob Odenkirk
Quick mention last night, I got to go see John Proctor is the villain over at the Booth Theater, and it was fantastic. I just want to give props to everybody over there that put on a great show. The writer, Kimberly Belflower, the director, Donya Taymor. Last night's cast, Kiara Aurelia, Victoria Vircudiotes, Fina Straza Morgan, Scott Hagen Oliveras, Noah Pacht, Maggie Kunst, Gabriel Ebert and Fiona Roberson. I just want to say they were a great cast. Everyone acted so great. It was a great, great show. Go check it out. Also, a reminder, we've kicked off our latest Fallon Book Club. That's right, my friend, from Fredrik Backman. It is a multi generational story about friendship, growing up and a painting. I'll just leave it at that. It's really good. Do you want me to read the first paragraph? Please. Here we go. Luisa is a teenager. The best kind of human. The evidence for this is very simple. Little children think teenagers are the best humans. And teenagers think teenagers are the best humans. The only people who don't think that teenagers are the best humans are adults, which is obviously because adults are the worst kind of humans.
Jimmy Fallon
It's really good. It's really good.
Bob Odenkirk
It's really funny. Pick up a copy, let's read it together. You can go to alonbookclub on Instagram to follow along. And then next month we're gonna have the authority Fredrik Backman on the show all the way from Sweden so we can talk about the book on the show with him. But first, what a show we have for you tonight. He stars in the new movie Nobody 2, which is in theaters tomorrow.
Jimmy Fallon
Bob Odenkirk is here.
Bob Odenkirk
He's great. You can see her in the new film Honey don't which is in theaters August 22nd. Margaret Qualley is joining us.
Jimmy Fallon
Stick around. We'll be right back with Bob Odenkirk. Come on back.
Bob Odenkirk
Our first guest is a Tony nominated and Emmy winning actor who stars in the new movie Nobody 2, which is in theaters tomorrow. Everyone please welcome Bob Odenkirch.
Jimmy Fallon
Bob. Yeah.
Bob Odenkirk
They love you. Welcome back to the show. It's always great to see you. I think the last time you were in the building was SNL 50th.
Margaret Qualley
One of the greatest things I've ever been attended.
Bob Odenkirk
Wasn't that fun?
Margaret Qualley
Yeah, it was so great. And just to see all that talent in the space right there back. You know what I loved too is it wasn't just celebrities, it was people who worked on the show all these years. I met people who worked in the lighting and makeup departments.
Bob Odenkirk
It was without them that show would not be.
Margaret Qualley
Yeah, it was great.
Bob Odenkirk
That was awesome. It was great to see you there, bud. And then the last time I. I saw You. I got to see you on Broadway and Glengarry Glen Ross, and you were unbelievable in that play.
Margaret Qualley
It was a crazy honor to do it. It's a Chicago play. David Mamet wrote it, and I.
Bob Odenkirk
Bill Burr, Michael McKeon.
Margaret Qualley
Yeah. Michael McKean.
Bob Odenkirk
But you.
Margaret Qualley
Everyone was Kieran Culkin.
Bob Odenkirk
Kieran Culkin was great.
Margaret Qualley
It was fantastic. We had so much fun. But the challenge with doing a classic like that is every night, you know, there's at least 15 people in the audience who've done that play. So if you scooch on the lines, you know, there's a bunch of people going, no, they're not doing the play.
Bob Odenkirk
That's not the way.
Margaret Qualley
I know, because I learned it.
Bob Odenkirk
Really?
Margaret Qualley
Yeah. And I did have fun with it.
Bob Odenkirk
And you told me, because you were nice enough to go out to dinner with me afterwards, and you were like, yeah, sometimes I switch it up and I deliver it differently every night.
Margaret Qualley
Don't tell Mamet.
Bob Odenkirk
No, I would not. But. No, but you act differently.
Margaret Qualley
Yeah.
Bob Odenkirk
So every night's a new kind of experience.
Margaret Qualley
Yeah.
Bob Odenkirk
But you crushed it. It was unbelievable to watch. And we were talking. We were at dinner, and I go, that's amazing. You were nominated for a Tony Award.
Margaret Qualley
It's crazy, because the Broadway community is a real community. I mean, they know each other and they support each other and. But I felt like, you know, coming in from TV world and film world, and they were welcoming and cheering me on.
Bob Odenkirk
Would you do it again?
Margaret Qualley
I would absolutely do it again. It was a joy.
Bob Odenkirk
We were talking, and you said, you know, I just kind of wish that Bernie Brillstein could have been around to see you. Yeah.
Margaret Qualley
Now people don't know who Bernie is. He's one of the great managers of show business. He worked for Elvis Presley not as a manager, but as an assistant and helper from the agency all the way through my career, and he was a big supporter of me, and he just loved talent, and he would have loved that Glengarry Glen Ross and nobody. Because he always said to me, because I was always trying to work with other people I loved, I want to do a show with him. I want to do a project with them. Yeah, Bob, count on yourself. You know, Bet on yourself. He would say, do something that's challenging for you. Get out there on your own. Take a risk. So he would have loved this. When you have somebody who works with you and you're starting out and they work with you for years, and you have a lot of failure in showbiz or I Do not him. You know, to get somewhere great and wish that they could have seen it. But I know he believed in me and believed this kind of thing could have.
Bob Odenkirk
I love Bernie Berlstein. He was just a magical guy.
Margaret Qualley
And you can listen to. To him on. Read his audiobook if you're curious about a classic showbiz voice.
Bob Odenkirk
Yeah.
Margaret Qualley
Where did I go right person? Where did I go right. You can hear him tell his tale on an audiobook.
Bob Odenkirk
After we went, I downloaded it and listened to it. And I'm just like. You get kind of teary eyed because he used to come around. He'd be around the house.
Margaret Qualley
Can you do a Bernie impersonation?
Bob Odenkirk
No.
Jimmy Fallon
Bob.
Bob Odenkirk
Yeah.
Margaret Qualley
Get in here. What are you up to, kid?
Bob Odenkirk
What are you doing, kid?
Margaret Qualley
What are you doing, kid?
Bob Odenkirk
He was there. He was so helpful with me with late night, but I also knew him through Saturday Night Live, and I used to give him a shout out when he was in the audience. He was always around, and he was the best and just made. He just knew show business so well, and everyone loved him.
Margaret Qualley
If you love showbiz books, check them out.
Bob Odenkirk
Yeah, let's talk about Nobody two.
Margaret Qualley
Sure.
Bob Odenkirk
Congratulations. The first movie was a giant hit.
Margaret Qualley
Well, it worked out.
Bob Odenkirk
That was a risk.
Margaret Qualley
Big risk. Yeah. You know, I'm from comedy. I wrote for SNL for years, and I wrote a show called Mr. Show. And I helped with other people, Clarice, Tim Merrick and I. And then I got this fluky opportunity in Breaking Bad, and then that becomes Better Call Saul. And I had this. Then I got married, and today's my birthday.
Jimmy Fallon
No, it's not true. It's not true. No, that's not. That's not true. That's not true. That is not.
Bob Odenkirk
That is not true at all. No. No.
Margaret Qualley
Okay.
Bob Odenkirk
All right.
Margaret Qualley
But I had this crazy notion that, you know, Saul is a guy who never quits, you know, and he's very clever in his game plans. He's kind of like an action hero, except he doesn't fight. So I can't believe somebody said, you're probably right. You might be right. And then I just trained for years, and we got this great script by Derek Kolstadt, who wrote John Wick, and off we went. I could have embarrassed the hell out of myself. But guess what? That's what we do in comedy. I'd been embarrassing myself for 25 years for a living, so big deal.
Bob Odenkirk
Me, too. Yeah. Yeah. But there was a little hint that I saw of you that you might have been an action star. The photo that I saw of you.
Margaret Qualley
What are you talking about?
Bob Odenkirk
I found a photo of you. Really? Oh, yeah. This guy. This guy should be in action movies. Oh, yeah.
Margaret Qualley
Now I'm gonna tell you something. Pan down to the Lincoln Logs.
Bob Odenkirk
Yeah. Respect. Respect.
Margaret Qualley
So that's Christmas, and I wanna tell you how old that kid was. That was me at 4 being given a machine gun. It was a different world. It was a different world.
Bob Odenkirk
Oh, my gosh. Here you are. How do we set up what's happening in the sequel? That nobody too.
Margaret Qualley
Well, Hutch Mansell is my character and he in the first movie has some tension within his family as all of us do. And he explodes in rage and goes after these bad guys who stole his daughter's kitty cat bracelet.
Bob Odenkirk
Oh, yeah.
Margaret Qualley
And that becomes a fight against pure evil. And in the second movie, he decides he's going to take his family on vacation and work out his work life balance. And he explodes with rage.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. That's how you do it. That's how you do it. Bob Odenkirk, everybody. Melbourne 2 is in theaters tomorrow. More with Bob when we come back. Stick around, everybody. I said mesmerizing.
Bob Odenkirk
State of.
Jimmy Fallon
If you've been under a rock might have not heard of me, y'. All. Our next guest is an Emmy and.
Bob Odenkirk
Golden Globe nominated actor who you can see in the new movie Honey don't, which is in theaters August 22nd. Everyone, please welcome Margaret Qualley.
Jimmy Fallon
Margaret, I love you, Barb. Welcome back to the show. Please.
Bob Odenkirk
This is what I'm talking about. Welcome back. I have to say, before we get into your new movie, I saw you in Happy Gilmore 2 and you were unbelievably funny and awesome in it, and congratulations on that.
Jimmy Fallon
You were great.
Bob Odenkirk
This split, you did a split in the sand trap, and it's the funniest move ever, and it was so great.
Ruth Crump
You gotta use what you got to get. What you want is gone.
Bob Odenkirk
Yes, that's correct. Yeah. But look at you now, buds with Adam Sandler. Because last time we were here, you're talking like, dude, I got a text from Sandler. I think I'm in Happy Gilmore, too. I'm like, and now you're buds with him.
Ruth Crump
I got to stop talking about this guy. It's getting creepy.
Bob Odenkirk
No. Is it really? Yeah, but he's so great to talk about. He's a good guy.
Ruth Crump
He's a great guy.
Bob Odenkirk
Yeah. Do you now introduce him to people? You go, oh, guys, this is my buddy, Sandler.
Ruth Crump
Yeah, no biggie.
Bob Odenkirk
Yeah, not a big deal. I know you took your dad to happy Go more, too. What do you think?
Ruth Crump
He was super funny. He. He was like. He was like. He was like. Whiskers was in it. And I was like, what? Who's Whiskers?
Bob Odenkirk
Whiskers was in Happy Gilmore.
Ruth Crump
Yeah.
Bob Odenkirk
Yeah. You're a dad. You okay?
Ruth Crump
I was like, whiskers. Who the frick is Whiskers? Who the Frick? Like people say.
Bob Odenkirk
Yeah, everyone always says it. Yeah. Who the frick is Whiskers? Yeah, of course. It's a famous phrase that no one says.
Ruth Crump
Yeah, yeah.
Bob Odenkirk
And then what was his answer?
Ruth Crump
Well, he was like. I thought about it a little longer. He's like, whiskers. You know Whiskers from Panama? My dad knows Benny Safdie and calls him Whiskers because they met in Panama when I was doing a Claire Denis movie, and they're buds and he was in.
Bob Odenkirk
Why is he calling Whiskers?
Ruth Crump
Cause he looks like a cat.
Bob Odenkirk
Of course.
Ruth Crump
Obviously.
Bob Odenkirk
Of course. That's why. Who the freak is Whiskers?
Ruth Crump
Yeah.
Bob Odenkirk
But I'm happy always to see you dance. I got to see you dance at the Oscars. You were unbelievable in a James Bond tribute to the Bond girls. You were amazing.
Ruth Crump
Thank you.
Bob Odenkirk
You're a great dancer.
Ruth Crump
Thank you.
Bob Odenkirk
I've been lucky enough to say I've been at dance parties with you. Yeah, we danced and we've danced many times before.
Ruth Crump
Should we play truth or dare?
Bob Odenkirk
You wanna.
Ruth Crump
I don't know.
Bob Odenkirk
No, I would not be good at that.
Ruth Crump
Right here.
Bob Odenkirk
No, I wouldn't be good at truth or dare?
Ruth Crump
Truth or dare?
Bob Odenkirk
Uh, truth.
Ruth Crump
Truth.
Bob Odenkirk
True. Truth.
Ruth Crump
Oh.
Bob Odenkirk
You thought I was gonna say dare?
Ruth Crump
Yeah. Okay, Truth. Um.
Bob Odenkirk
All right. Dare.
Ruth Crump
How many people have you slept? You want to do dare? You just dare.
Jimmy Fallon
I dare.
Bob Odenkirk
I'll dare it. Yeah.
Ruth Crump
Okay. I dare you to lay flat on the desk and then interview me the rest of the time. Like that. Or you could switch places with someone in the audience.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay.
Ruth Crump
Okay.
Bob Odenkirk
All right, here we go. Let's talk about your movie.
Ruth Crump
Okay.
Bob Odenkirk
Honey, don't.
Ruth Crump
Yeah.
Bob Odenkirk
Is the film.
Ruth Crump
Oh, my God. I'm so proud of you.
Bob Odenkirk
What drew you.
Ruth Crump
You're doing a really good job, dude.
Bob Odenkirk
What drew you to doing this film? The writers. Yes.
Ruth Crump
I love Ethan Coen and Trisha Kirk.
Bob Odenkirk
You worked with them before.
Ruth Crump
I have.
Bob Odenkirk
And did you know about this script when you worked with them the first time? What did you realize.
Ruth Crump
Sorry, it's a little hard to hear you.
Bob Odenkirk
When you did the first movie with them, did you realize you were going to do this movie?
Ruth Crump
I didn't know, but I was so happy when I got the script.
Bob Odenkirk
And how do we describe what the film's about?
Ruth Crump
It's one of those classic everyday lesbian detective thrillers.
Bob Odenkirk
Uh huh. And Aubrey Plaza's in it?
Ruth Crump
Yes, with Aubrey Plaza. As all lesbian detective thrillers have, it seems fun.
Bob Odenkirk
Chris Evans is in it. Chris Evans is in it.
Ruth Crump
He's in it.
Bob Odenkirk
You're a detective.
Ruth Crump
I'm a detective.
Bob Odenkirk
You're a detective. So I thought it'd be fun to play a game with you.
Ruth Crump
Okay.
Bob Odenkirk
And maybe what I'll do is I'll read.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay.
Ruth Crump
Get up, get up, get up, get up. That was really good.
Bob Odenkirk
I slept with two people. Should have just said that. I thought it'd be fun to play a game with you where I ask. I'll tell you a Not Truth or Dare. Not Truth or Dare, where I give you a fact and you tell me if it's true or false. If you're a detective, and then you give me a fact and I will have to guess if it's true or false. Okay, you have your question there. I don't know what the question is or if it's true or false, but I'll give you mine first. Ooh, which one shall I choose for you? Ready?
Ruth Crump
Are you mad at me?
Bob Odenkirk
Am I what? Mad at you? No. I love you. I'll never be mad at you.
Ruth Crump
I love you too.
Bob Odenkirk
Okay. I won't say Cracker Jacks with Jack Nicholson at the World Series.
Ruth Crump
Sure.
Bob Odenkirk
Yeah. Wait, did you. Yeah, I did.
Ruth Crump
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Look at him.
Bob Odenkirk
You're good. He goes. He goes. He goes, jimmy, did you get the prize yet?
Ruth Crump
Yeah.
Bob Odenkirk
And so I go, no, I didn't get it yet. So I go and I pull out the prize and I go, it's a. It's a sticker of a snake. He goes. You know, when I was a kid, I used to get things like tin whistles or a compass. Now you get a picture of a snake. That's what he said. It was great. It's like he was scripted, but it wasn't. It was just him being him. All right, you guessed it, you got it correct. Now I have to see if I can guess your true or false.
Ruth Crump
Okay.
Bob Odenkirk
Are you mad at me?
Ruth Crump
No, I couldn't be. Okay. I once. Are you, Maddie? I once tried to set up Bill Murray with my mom.
Bob Odenkirk
Your mom is Andie MacDowell, who is in the film Groundhog Day with Bill Murray. You once tried to set your mom up with Bill Murray. They were already in a movie together, so they Wouldn't even.
Jimmy Fallon
Why would that if I'm hoping.
Bob Odenkirk
I'm gonna sigh. False.
Ruth Crump
True.
Jimmy Fallon
Breaking news. Breaking breaking news.
Ruth Crump
Yeah. No, literally, tonight, Bill Murray, he pops into my backstage dressing room.
Bob Odenkirk
This just happened tonight.
Ruth Crump
This is breaking news.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. This is.
Ruth Crump
This is hot.
Jimmy Fallon
Breaking news. Breaking. Whiskers. Who?
Connor Marshall
The break is whiskers.
Bob Odenkirk
Breaking news.
Ruth Crump
Breaking news. So he pops in. He's all. He's all. You know what?
Bob Odenkirk
He's the best. He's Bill Murray.
Ruth Crump
He's wearing a Piggly Wiggly shirt.
Bob Odenkirk
He was.
Ruth Crump
And I grew up in North Carolina, and Piggly Wiggly's a Southern thing, I think, right?
Bob Odenkirk
Yes.
Ruth Crump
And, I mean, there was one where I grew up. So I was like, oh, yeah, Piggly Wiggly. Then cut to, I find out he's living in Charleston. My mom's living in Charleston. I know. And he was kind of like. He was saying, okay, well, you know what? I'm gonna give you the tea. He was like. He was like, you know, your mom and I, we didn't get. He was like, we didn't get along so good while we were making that movie. And he was like, you know, it took a long time to get her hair done, and she didn't know her lines this one time. And I was like, yeah, well, I heard a different story, sir. And then, you know, come to find out, I'm like, I'm putting two and two together. He's living in Charleston, she's living in Charleston. They've got this kind of rage towards each other, but maybe he's trying to make amends. And I'm like, she's single, he's single. They're both crazy. Let's get it together.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow. That's what I'm talking about. You did. Yes.
Bob Odenkirk
Try to set them up.
Ruth Crump
So now I said to come circle back and get my number if he wants me to connect with my mom. And, you know, if he's. If he's. If he's got any sense at all, he's.
Jimmy Fallon
Of course he would. Oh, my gosh.
Bob Odenkirk
Of course he would be. This is the biggest tea that's ever been spilled. We'll see on the Tonight Show. Thank you so much.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Yeah. Margaret Qualley Honeydonk is in theaters August 22nd.
Bob Odenkirk
