When someone auditions for that show, do you have. Is this when you have to put on your acting face and, like, you can't really react if you don't like it? You have to keep a smile and be like.

Sometimes it's difficult.

Because you don't want to hurt feelings. And, you know, there's also kids that come to the show. There's people that really believe in themselves that they believe they deserve to be there, and they don't. And it's super hard to tell them that, you know, in front of millions of people watching. No, no, no, no. I was purely a hired gun, but I wore a lot of makeup and that's what we like to do.

I also want to talk about Spinal Tap while I have you here, but do people just bother you all the time about just talking about it?

[Michael McKean]

They don't bother me. They do quote me. They know the movie much better than I do.

When was the last time you've seen Spinal Tap?

[Michael McKean]

Oh, geez. Start to finish. We actually watched it with a guy who's. Who wrote this book with us. You can buy a book now.

Wow.

Yes. It's actually. It's one of those, like, ace novels where you flip it over and people on this side think you're an idiot because you're holding the book upside down, but you're actually reading the front half of the book anyway. It's called A Fine Line between Stupid and Clever. And the other side is called Smell the Book. So it's up to you.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Did you have any idea that Spinal Tap would be such a cult classic or.

[Michael McKean]

We just wanted to get it finished.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Really?

[Michael McKean]

Oh, yeah, yeah. We had a tiny budget and we had no time and. And we called our friends and said. We said, do you like to improvise? And they said, yeah. And they came and they. They shot for a day and they went home. It was great.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Who were you closest with? Like, did You. Were you Chris Christopher, guest friend? Were you Harry Shears?

[Michael McKean]

I had no. I'd known Chris since 1967.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Wow.

[Michael McKean]

We were roommates. We. We were at NYU together, and we started writing songs together and stuff and making each other laugh. And I didn't meet Harry until three years later when I came out to la.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Wow.

[Michael McKean]

Yeah.

[Jimmy Fallon]

And how did Rob Reiner get involved?

[Michael McKean]

It's. Listen, it's all in the book.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Oh, is it? Okay, good.

[Michael McKean]

Yeah, yeah, yeah. 1. 1/2 is about the making of the film, and the other half is about the band as a real thing, which they ate.

[Jimmy Fallon]

You know they're not. Yeah. Gosh, it's the funniest interview I have. Everything. Oh, wait. In depth.

But it's so brilliantly said in whatever you make up or improvise, it's now quotable. Every band who goes on tour has to have a copy of. Of Spinal Tap or watch it on the tour bus. It's just part of the vernacular. It's nice, it's good. And there's a rumor that I heard. First of all, I heard that there's a sequel coming out.

That's not just a rumor, it's a project. And you can see it on September 12th of this year, if you want. The title is Spinal Cap 2 the end continues.

Because the title Grumpy Old Men was already taken.

Yeah. So some mid tour, some excuses, excuses. But also there's like. There's all sorts of crazy cameos I heard. I mean, you can't confirm or deny, but Paul McCartney, maybe, I heard.

[Michael McKean]

Maybe.

Maybe we don't know. Sir Elton John, maybe. Maybe we don't know. Anyways, I cannot wait to see that. And. Yeah, congrats on that. And I also Heard you were. They're going to re release Spinal Tap in. In theaters.

But it's all about, you know, those men and what they do and how they do it to each other on the way out the door.

And you saw this play originally?

[Michael McKean]

I saw it in 1986 with Peter Falk in. In Bob Odenkirk's role, one of the greatest actors who ever lived. My opinion. And Joe Mantegna, who had created the role of Ricky Roma a couple of years before. It's really, it's, it's a. It's an amazing play. Apologies in advance for the salty language.

It was, like, one of the last songs added to the record. So I think just in that 11th hour, you're like, this is it. Yeah. This feels vibey.

What was it gonna be if it wasn't Dreamsicle?

Well, it was between Dreamsicle and Holy Smoke. And Dreamsicle.

To me, Holy smoke would have been so topical.

Holy Pope. Yeah.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Yeah. Well, they just smoked. Yeah. You saw the smoke and they named the new Pope. That would have been weird.

I know.

Thank goodness you didn't do that.

[Maren Morris]

It would have been cool for, like, a day. Also, I'm not Catholic, so that would have been, like, confusing as well.

[Jimmy Fallon]

But I would have figured out a tie in with the Pope or something. Yeah. But at least. But Dreamsicle. Why Dreamsicle? That's your favorite ice cream.

[Maren Morris]

Yeah. It was like the truck that would come to our cul de sac in Texas. Like, that would be, like, the star of the show that would sell out quick in the summertime. And it also just, like, the whole album is sort of like, post, you know, I got divorced, so I'm talking about things that are, like, very fleeting, and you just trying to remain more present as a human, as a mother, as a songwriter. And so, yeah, calling it Dreamsicle just reminded me of home, but it also reminded me to, like, enjoy something in my hands while I have it and not, like, mourn it before it's melted away.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Good for you.

[Maren Morris]

I love that you also said that. You said the album is a very 70s vibe.

[Maren Morris]

Yeah. Was listening to a lot of stuff. My mom would play in the house. Loves Fleetwood Mac, loves some, like, disco. Yeah. So it was sort of this dancey meets Laurel Canyon vibe. So that was why the.

[Jimmy Fallon]

And you did a lot at Electric lady here in the city?

[Maren Morris]

I did, yeah. I had never recorded or written in New York, like, my entire career. It was always Nashville or la. And then getting to work at Electric lady was just just such a time.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Who are you working with?

[Maren Morris]

I was working with Jack Antonoff. And so he's done three.

[Tariq Trotter]

The best.

[Maren Morris]

I know. The best.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Did you take your son to see it?

[Sofia Vergara]

I did.

Yeah. So my son Hayes is. He just turned five. Getting to watch it with my son was just so emotional. Just instant tears. Cause, you know, he's old enough now. If he hears my voice, he's like, that's you. And it's in a movie that's like four children and adults. And it was just. Yeah. Really emotional.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Come on. That's fantastic. You get to do that. Yeah, he gets to do. And now on July 12th, you're kicking off a global tour. Come on now. This is massive. What can people expect from the Dreamsicle Tour?

[Maren Morris]

I mean, kind of like you were saying, like, very 70s vibes. I'm trying to figure out how to get a bar on stage. Like a working bar.

Wait, what?

Yeah, we're gonna figure it out.

Yeah, that's my dream is like, I would love to be able to make a drink on stage in the middle of a song or have, like. If friends or family come to the show in that city, they just drunkenly wander up during summer. I don't know.
