From Studio 16, rock and roll center in the heart of New York City.
Jimmy Fallon
It'S your Tonight show, starring Jimmy Fallon.
Announcer
And I join Jim and his guests, Fred Armisen, Olivia Cook, Debbie Kinsman. Featuring the legendary Ruth Gross. 2179. Jim. And now, here he is, Jimmy Bel. Come on. Love you. Enjoy yourself. Enjoy us. Everybody.
Jimmy Fallon
Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome to the Tonight Show.
Announcer
That's right.
Jimmy Fallon
Welcome. Well, guys, everybody's talking about this. Yesterday here in New York, President Trump attended the US Open final. Yep, Trump was excited. It's the first time in years he went to court without his lawyers. Yeah, Trump was there at a guess of Rolex and sat in their suite. This is very nice. They even gave him a special watch with two little hands. Aww.
Announcer
Isn't that nice?
Jimmy Fallon
Trump had fun at the match. He said, I enjoy love 15 and love 30, but started losing interest at love 40. This year, Trump's been to the super bowl, the Daytona 500, the World cup, two UFC fights, and a wrestling championship. Eric and Don Jr. Were like, still couldn't come to one of our little league games. Love you, dad. Get this. Broadcasters were asked not to show anyone booing Trump. In fact, they even made an announcement at the event, but I'm not sure it worked. Take a look at this. Ladies and gentlemen, when we introduce the president, please refrain from the booing, hissing, jeering, mocking, taunting, screaming, you suck. Flipping the bird, flipping the double burr, chin flicking Italian style. Mooning. Throwing beers, throwing honey deuces and chanting cankles, cankles. Now, please welcome President Trump.
Announcer
Messi Fights.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, crap.
Announcer
You can't try. Try everything. Of course, that backfired spectacularly.
Jimmy Fallon
Of course, at tennis matches, it's usually just the players grunting with each shot, but Trump got in on it, too. Yeah. Watch this.
Announcer
Y.
Jimmy Fallon
He loves tennis. Trump really likes tennis. He just put out a video listing his favorite players. Oh, yeah, Check this out. I had a great time at the US Open seeing all my favorite players, like Gigantic Fidget Spinner, Carbo load at Alcatraz, Taylor Swift, Labubu Macaroni, Abracadabra by Lady Gaga, a sexy Pop tart Novax for RFK Jr.I got a Swiffer Wet Jet, Felice Navidad, Merry Christmas, Justin Guarini, K Pop Demon Hunter, and of course, Cuckoo Cachoo. There you go. That's nice. He loves it. Hey, did you guys see this? Trump just signed an executive order to change the name of the Department of Defense to the Department of War. When they heard about the big change, the owner of Cracker Barrel was like, maybe take a minute, think about it. He's going with Department of War, which is what people call the clearance section at T.J. maxx.
Announcer
Give it.
Jimmy Fallon
A change in the name is expected to cost a billion dollars. Trump said, I'll get the money from the Treasury Department, which is now called the Department of Ka Ching. Meanwhile, this morning, Trump visited the museum of the Bible and announced that his family bible will be displayed there. You can tell it's Trump's bible because it's hollowed out and filled with a shrink wrapped McNugget in case of emergency. Switching gears tomorrow, Apple is expected to announce an all new slimmer model of the iPhone called the iPhone Air, which is better than its original name. Phonezempic, Apple Phonez. And finally, as I mentioned, the US Open finals were this weekend and the matches were really exciting. On the men's side, the champion was Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated. Oh, my.
Announcer
Oh, my God. Oh, my. Oh, my gosh.
Jimmy Fallon
Thank you very much. Thank you. It's Carlos Alcaraz. Thank you. Oh, my gosh. Honored to have you here. This is. Appreciate it. What was. You just came in from the curtain, huh?
Fred Armisen
Yeah, I was just behind there.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Amazing having you here. What's it like to win your second U.S. open?
Fred Armisen
It's exciting. The whole thing, it's just like a blur. I mean, I don't even remember.
Jimmy Fallon
Was like.
Fred Armisen
It's almost like I wasn't there at all.
Jimmy Fallon
You must remember something. There you go.
Fred Armisen
Well, I hit the ball. It went over the net.
Jimmy Fallon
Yep.
Fred Armisen
And this other guy is back there and he hits the ball back to me.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God.
Fred Armisen
And I hit it back and it just kept happening over and over and eventually I just won.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God.
Fred Armisen
So I'll never thank you, please.
Jimmy Fallon
Great story. Yeah, thank you. It's an amazing story. I love having you here and I'm so happy you took the time. I actually wish I could hear from a U.S. open winner who does remember the. Oh.
Announcer
That is U.S. open champion arena Sabalenka, everyone. Come on. You are the best.

Jimmy Fallon
You don't remember that either? There you go.

She is a multi platinum recording artist who has a brand new memoir out tomorrow called Eternally Electric. The message in my music. Debbie Gibson is here tonight.

Announcer
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Well, here at the Tonight show, we love songs and we especially love songs written in under an hour. Yeah. It's time for Battle of the Instant Songwriters. Here we go. Welcome to Battle of the Instant Songwriters. Before the show, we found two amazing musicians. We gave them each a made up song title and gave them an hour to write an original song based on that title. Here's a shot of them practicing backstage a minute ago. Let's see what they came up with and meet them right now. Tonight is a special version of instant Songwriters because these two contestants are a pop music duo who are contributing songwriters on Netflix's K Pop Demon Hunters. They also, they also star in the songwriting reality show hitmakers. Please welcome Jenna Andrews and Stephen Kirsch. Hey, bud. Good to see you. Thank you for doing this.
Announcer
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
Let's start this first. We'll start with you, Jenna. What was the title of the song that you were given? I'm sorry, in advance.
Jenna Andrews
Monday Night Football. Tuesday morning Hangover.
Jimmy Fallon
Ooh, not bad. Monday night Football. Tuesday morning hangover. A lot of people here can understand. What instrument are you playing tonight for?
Jenna Andrews
Guitar.
Jimmy Fallon
Guitar. Crush it. All right. Go to the stage. Get ready, Jenna. I appreciate it. Get in the zone. Focus up, because it's going to be big. I'm excited about this. And now, ladies and gentlemen, here to perform the world premiere of the soon to be classic Monday Night Football. Tuesday morning hangover. It's Jenna Andrews.
Debbie Gibson
Jimmy, what are we doing? It's so late at night. Expect something different. It's the same every time we're watching the game. Feeling all right. The Bears and the Vikings, it's all in the time. It's on tonight. He's got his popcorn. Epic can keep score. And my team is up for Monday night. Tuesday morning hangover. Busy watching TV while my headache takes over. Yeah, it's the first weekend.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm already tired.
Debbie Gibson
He lost his PA I'm paying the price. So I guess I'm all right, though. Cause I'm on the Tonight Show.
Announcer
Come on, now. Yeah. That's how you do it. That's exactly.
Jimmy Fallon
Tonight.
Announcer
You're the best. Come on. That's how you do it. Give it up for Jenna, everybody. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
All right, all right. Wait, this is still competition. Stephen, you're still competing. Okay. Yeah. Stephen, tell everyone what your song title is. My song title is Dumped on the Jumbotron. Okay, I really appreciate that one. That's a. Yeah, that was for you, but especially I wanted to make it a little tough. What instrument will you be playing? Guitar.
Announcer
Oh, come on.
Jimmy Fallon
Fantastic news.
Announcer
Head over there.
Jimmy Fallon
Get on. Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for the world premiere of Dumped on the Jumbotron by Stephen Kirk.
Stephen Kirsch
I got dumped on a jumbotron Whole life flash when the screen came on yeah, Thought it was a kiss cam Not a whole world laughing at me all day. I got dumped on a jumbotron I'm an Internet meme now I'm on TikTok single life suck but life goes on. Least I got to meet LeBron all eyes on 23 but I swear that he looked at me and I spilled my girlfriend's dream I got dumped on a jumbo truck. My life won't be the same but many have had one hell of a game Least I wasn't outed by Coldplay. I got dumped on a jumbo truck.
Announcer
Yeah.
Stephen Kirsch
I got dumped, I got dumped. I got dumped. Now the whole world knows I'm singing this song on a Tonight Show. That's just how my story goes. I got dumped. Cause LeBron's my goat.
Announcer
Give it up for Steven, everybody. Good job. Come on over, bud.
Jimmy Fallon
I know it's, it's time to see now it's time to see who won. So we're gonna let our great audience decide the winner.
Debbie Gibson
Oh, my God, Here we go.
Jimmy Fallon
Is it Jenna or Steven? Okay, you know what? You're both pros. You're Both winners. And because of that, everyone in tonight's audience will be going home with a pint of Ben and Jerry's tonight.
Announcer
Dough ice cream. Good for you guys. My thanks to Jenna Andrews, Stephen Kirk. Stick around. We'll be right back with Fred Armisen. Come on, baby. Get in forever, y'. All.

Announcer
Come on. They love you. We love you, Fred. Thank you, Jimmy. Thank you very much. Welcome back.
Jimmy Fallon
Thank you.
Announcer
Thanks.
Jimmy Fallon
I love it every time you come on the show. This is your 17th appearance.
Fred Armisen
Unbelievable.
Jimmy Fallon
That's a major 17th. That's a lot.
Fred Armisen
So where am I on the like, you know, like the most?
Jimmy Fallon
You're tied. Yeah. You're tied for the second most Tonight show appearances. Yeah. Wow. Ever.
Fred Armisen
Second most.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. For us. Thank you.
Fred Armisen
With who? Who am I tied with?
Jimmy Fallon
Why?
Fred Armisen
I'm just curious.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm just curious. Lin Manuel Miranda.
Announcer
Woo. All right.
Jimmy Fallon
Amazing. Me. Genius.
Fred Armisen
Who's it first?
Jimmy Fallon
Michael Strahan. 21. Michael Strahan is 21. What? So he's been on 21 times.
Fred Armisen
21.
Jimmy Fallon
You're 17.
Fred Armisen
Way behind. Now, if I divide this up, can I. Does this count as two appearances? If. Because I was in the monologue. Right, so.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, I understand. I understand. So the appearances are different episodes.
Fred Armisen
That was an appearance.
Jimmy Fallon
That is true. I think we're just counting episodes. Okay, but. But now that you said it, you know, I think, yeah, why not? Let's just make up the note.
Announcer
Bump it up.
Jimmy Fallon
Bump it up. Let's make it up. Okay, here he is. This is his 53rd appearance on the Tonight Show.
Announcer
Me. Thank you. Thank you very much.
Jimmy Fallon
Thank you. Oh, my gosh. I didn't think I'd get emotional. Fred, I'm so happy you're here. I want to talk to you about the album because you're going to freak out. This is the first greatest idea ever. It's so funny. But I want to talk to you about the big thing. Ringo Starr, who we both love. You played for him on his birthday.
Fred Armisen
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Played drums for Ringo Starr.
Fred Armisen
I did an impression of Ringo for Ringo.
Jimmy Fallon
Talk to me about that. On his birthday. Talk to me about this because obviously we both love Ringo. I'm gonna try to make your memory. My memory.
Fred Armisen
Even just the thought of Ringo. Like a genius.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Fred Armisen
So I was invited to his birthday party, and there was like, a sort of show Thibaud and Burnett was hosting, and they Needed some. They had to fill some time. There are people playing his songs. They're like, will you come up and do some comedy because we have to get to noon. And so they had a drum kit up there. I was like, absolutely. And I just did a Ringo impression. I explained what it was. I was like, this is a Ringo impression. And I did it. And Ringo was right there.
Jimmy Fallon
What was he doing when you're.
Fred Armisen
He was clapping along. Clapping Ringo. I've stared at those album covers, listened to that music so much.
Jimmy Fallon
We actually have a video. Here's Fred doing an impression of Ringo Starr in front of Ringo Starr.
Fred Armisen
Take a look.
Jimmy Fallon
Dude.
Announcer
Come on, dude. How cool is he?
Jimmy Fallon
He's so cool. He is so cool. That's amazing, dude. I want to mention that you have an album coming out September 26th. This is fantastic. And this is real. It's called 100 Sound Effects. Yeah, this is a real thing. Actually Questlev texted me like a couple months ago. Yo. He goes, is this thing real that Fred's doing? I go, yeah. I can't. It's the greatest. It's the funniest thing ever. First of all, 100 sound effects. Where did the idea come up?
Fred Armisen
It just seemed like a nice even number, you know? Cause they're so short that an album has to be like at least 100.
Jimmy Fallon
I understand. But wait, Fred, here's what's already funny. You have 101 sound effects on the album. Yes, that's a problem.
Fred Armisen
I told. And I'm name dropping. I told Steve Martin about it and he was like, uh huh. You should do 101.
Jimmy Fallon
That's a really good Steve. That's a really good Steve Martin. Yeah, you should do 101. That's really funny. If I did Steve, I go, you should do 101. Okay, I have 100. And then you do 101.
Fred Armisen
I like this version.
Jimmy Fallon
That verse. That is so. That's exactly the. And is he happy that you chose to do 101 as an homage or.
Fred Armisen
When I told him about it, he didn't remember that. He told me that.
Jimmy Fallon
That's even really funny. That's even doubly. He's that funny. He just throws that dude just.
Fred Armisen
It was nothing to him.
Jimmy Fallon
Why 101? He just thought it would be. Yeah, that's funnier.
Fred Armisen
Let's just throw it off balance.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, why not? Throw it off balance. Yeah, you have a ton of great sound effects on here. Honestly, I wanted to play a couple for the audience, if you don't mind.
Fred Armisen
I recorded These. At recording studios, I tried to recreate a lot of sounds that. So it's sort of comedic but also sort of useful.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. I would think that when you get to probably around 20, you probably go, hey, this is actually harder work than I thought. Yeah, it was. It really was. Right. Because it's a funny idea, and you write ideas and then you go. Now you're in a recording studio and you're like, I gotta do a hundred of these.
Fred Armisen
Yeah. You know, it's a little bit like snl. You know, like when you. You sort of cut stuff, you're like, this is. This sound is not working. This isn't like. It's neither funny or useful. So.
Jimmy Fallon
So you actually cut some. But let me play a couple. Cause these are. This is keyboard not working at first at a music store. Oh, yeah.
Fred Armisen
When you go to a music store.
Jimmy Fallon
And, you know, like, you're at.
Fred Armisen
You're like, trying to.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. You go to, like. Yeah, like, Sam Goody or whatever. Yeah, whatever it is. Or whatever. Music store. Yeah, yeah. And. Yeah, sorry. This is keyboard not working at first at a music store.
Fred Armisen
Excuse me. I don't think this is working. Is this on?
Jimmy Fallon
All right, this one. I love this album so much. This one is a car door closing automatically. Van.
Fred Armisen
It's one of these. You know what I mean?
Jimmy Fallon
Like, I know. I know that now. Do you do. What is your goal of this album? Is it to get. Get to. To get it on the charts?
Fred Armisen
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
You want to hit.
Fred Armisen
I want to hit number one.
Jimmy Fallon
We can do it.
Announcer
We can do it.
Jimmy Fallon
I think you should do this. It's that genius to debut at number one. All right. We can make this happen. Which one are we gonna release? Do you want the album to be number one or a song? A sound effect in particular?
Fred Armisen
Maybe Tent Zipper. You know, when you go camping, there's so much zipper sounds.
Jimmy Fallon
It's always like, okay, is it tent. This is called Tent Zipper. Yeah. Okay. Oh, my gosh, Fred, this is genius. Thank you.
Announcer
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
They love it. I love this. This comes out September 26th.
Fred Armisen
Yeah, that's correct.
Jimmy Fallon
September 26th. This comes out. Everyone make sure you download. Buy this album, and let's get it to number one. Okay. And then next time you come on. Is there any that you could do? Could you do any of these sound effects live for our great audience?
Fred Armisen
I could. There's one that's music based, and it's like when you're leaving a music venue and the band is played and the night is done. I could do this. Is the bouncer, the guy who works there. Getting everyone to leave while throwing away bottles. Aggressively, you know, like they're trying to get you out.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay, so this one's called Music Venue Employee Kicking Everyone Out While Throwing Away Bottles.
Fred Armisen
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
All right, now, how do I help you?
Fred Armisen
So I'll take this.
Jimmy Fallon
This is so. And should we close our eyes and pretend we're there? Yeah.
Fred Armisen
Just picture yourself, like, the band is done, and what I need from the crowd is just a little bit of murmuring. Cause, like, you're leaving, you're walking out. So you guys can make the sound of.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay, the show is over. If you don't have a yellow wristband.
Announcer
Make your way to the door.
Jimmy Fallon
The show is done.
Announcer
If you're not with the band, get out. Great murmuring, by the way. Fred Armisen.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my gosh. 100 sound effects, and there's actually 101 on here. Well done. I'm so excited for you, and congrats on this record. I want to say, you know I love you, but I love Wednesday. It's one of my favorite shows. It's fantastic, and you crush it. Number one in, like, 1,000 countries or whatever. Dude, congrats on the hit your greatest Uncle Fester. And I heard that there might be talk of a spinoff of Uncle Fester. Yeah, you're getting your own, Jeff.
Announcer
Come on, bud. Yeah, it's fantastic.
Jimmy Fallon
Isn't that amazing? It's amazing. You got a great cast. Great cast.
Fred Armisen
And Tim Burton.
Jimmy Fallon
How's Tim Burton?
Fred Armisen
He's amazing.
Jimmy Fallon
I want to meet that guy. He's so. No, I just love him. I don't know if you want to meet. Great, great, great. I don't know if I want to meet him. Yes, you do.
Fred Armisen
No, you want to meet everybody. No, I don't, Jimmy. Yes, you do. Don't say that. Don't say that.
Jimmy Fallon
No, of course you do.
Fred Armisen
No, you're friendly and nice, and I like you back.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Fred Armisen
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
No.
Announcer
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Come on, Burton.
Announcer
Yeah.
Fred Armisen
No, come on. We'll arrange it.
Olivia Cooke
It's Tim.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Fred Armisen
Jimmy, Come on.
Announcer
There he is.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay, there he is. All right. Hey. Nah, he did.
Announcer
Fred, Allison, everybody. Wednesday. Streaming now on Netflix. Fred's album 100 Sound Effects, is now September 26th. More to that show after the break. Speak around, everybody.
Jimmy Fallon
Our next guest is a talented actress who you know from House of the Dragon. She stars in the new series the Girlfriend, which premieres September 10th on Prime Video. Everyone, please welcome Olivia Hook.
Announcer
Hi. Welcome.
Olivia Cooke
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
Thank you for being here. You're currently filming House of The Dragon, season three.
Olivia Cooke
I am. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. And how's it compared to season two? Season two was fantastic. Giant hit.
Olivia Cooke
Yes. Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Feeling pressure on this.
Olivia Cooke
A lot of pressure. It's big. It's big, this one.
Jimmy Fallon
It is, yeah.
Olivia Cooke
Bigger.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. It is bigger. Yeah, yeah. But you said somewhere that you don't ride a dragon and you want to ride one. Really?
Olivia Cooke
I'd ride it like a bucking bronco.
Jimmy Fallon
You would? Yeah, yeah. You'd get anything. But that would ruin the show.
Olivia Cooke
It would. It's not really my character, but.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. They don't let you just hop on. Do you go, hey, can I just do one? Just for fun, just for me?
Olivia Cooke
Maybe I will ask for that.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. Yeah, just go ahead. Just give me the solid. Can I just get on? Just. I know my character doesn't have a.
Olivia Cooke
Dragon as a wrap gift.
Jimmy Fallon
Just something as a birthday present.
Olivia Cooke
Yeah. Get me on.
Jimmy Fallon
Just get me on the dragon and just for. Just for my family to see.
Jenna Andrews
Yeah, yeah.
Olivia Cooke
Or I'll just, like, behind Rhaenyra, like, holding on for dear life.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, yeah.
Olivia Cooke
We take off into the sunset.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God. It'd be great. Do you remember getting the call, by the way, that you're gonna be on House of Dragon?
Olivia Cooke
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, it was like. It was 2020 in the. In the depths of lockdown, and I was. It was months. Months of auditioning, and I got a call, and my phone was plugged in by the wall, so I just ended up, like, crouching in the corner of my, like, apartment. Like this. As all. Yeah.
Announcer
What?
Jimmy Fallon
What?
Olivia Cooke
Yeah, as all my agents were on the phone being like, your life's about to change, baby. And I just felt immediate dread.
Jimmy Fallon
Dread?
Olivia Cooke
Well, yeah, because then you have to do it, don't you?
Jimmy Fallon
No, but of course you have to do it. But you're good at it.
Olivia Cooke
Oh, yeah. Thank you. But no. It was just.
Jenna Andrews
It felt like.
Olivia Cooke
It felt like a gargantuan job.
Jenna Andrews
Yeah.
Olivia Cooke
And then it's just.
Jimmy Fallon
You nailed it. Now it should just be fun. And then. Yeah. Even without that dragon, you're riding that dragon. Come on. You're riding the dragon. Success, baby. Money. I know that you said that your mom is your biggest cheerleader. Does mom come to the set all the time?
Olivia Cooke
Mom doesn't come to the set. Mom only likes the perks, which are the premieres and the free bars.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, yeah, she goes to the bar.
Olivia Cooke
She goes to the bar, and then, like, when the clock strikes midnight, she's slumped in the corner with, like, a chicken tender in one Hand and a margarita in the other. They're like, mom, it's time to go home. She's like, this is my night.
Announcer
Yes, that's right.
Jimmy Fallon
That's right, Mom. You're right. It is your night. Yeah. Let's talk about your new series, the girlfriend you co star with, Robin Wright. Oh, my gosh. Who also directed a lot of the episodes. Robin Wright. Yeah. Give it up. I love Robin Wright.
Jenna Andrews
She's.
Olivia Cooke
Has she been on? Do you know her?
Jimmy Fallon
No, I just know her from the show. She's just intimidating because I'm a big.
Fred Armisen
Fan of her work.
Olivia Cooke
She's amazing.
Jimmy Fallon
What's it like? And what was it like getting that call too bizarre.
Olivia Cooke
Because she was like, I saw you in a film where you played a psychopath. And I was like, that's my girl.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, that's my one.
Olivia Cooke
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, but it's so.
Olivia Cooke
Yeah. So flattering. I mean, I would have, you know, just. I don't know. I would have just made her cups of tea.
Jimmy Fallon
Do anything for Robin Ryan. Yes.
Olivia Cooke
Be nearer.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Olivia Cooke
Smell her.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Yeah, she is.
Olivia Cooke
She smells amazing.
Jimmy Fallon
She does, right? Yeah, I know she does. I was gonna ask you because. Is it weird to have her direct you because she's directing, but you get in some heated stuff and some emotional scenes. Yeah. I mean, what is it like when she's, like, getting into the thing and then she's.
Olivia Cooke
Well, she's a psychopath. Cause she'll be like. She'll be, like, having this, like. She'll be dredging this emotion up, and she'll be crying her eyes out, doing the most heartbreaking work, and then she'll be like, okay, uncut. Matias, did you get that?
Jimmy Fallon
Really?
Olivia Cooke
Is that good? Okay, moving on. And then you're just like, really? It's bizarre. It's like severance, real life severance.
Jimmy Fallon
And Laurie divs and plays your boyfriend in the show. And you were telling me backstage to icebreakery stuff, getting to know each other. Cause you had to do a lot of intimate scenes. Yeah. So it was like, hey, let's get to know each other.
Fred Armisen
Just so we're.
Jimmy Fallon
It's embarrassing. And let's. Yeah, it's. Yeah, but it's work. And you go, yeah. So you went to karaoke. That's how you bonded.
Olivia Cooke
Well, my mate was doing a good job with him in Gran Canaria, and so I was like, I want to come to Gran Canaria.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Olivia Cooke
And then he was there, and there was a bar that we went to that was doing karaoke, and I was like, I know what all the Break the ice, Celine Dion, all coming back to me now. Seven minutes. Look me in the eyes the whole time.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Olivia Cooke
And he did. Bless him. Bless him. Bless him. He didn't know the song, but he, like, harmonized perfectly.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow.
Olivia Cooke
Cause he was in cast.
Jimmy Fallon
That's a secret. That's a bonding thing that no one knows about. Singing All Coming Back to Me now by Celine Dion. And it works.
Olivia Cooke
And it keeps going.
Jimmy Fallon
And it keeps going. It's a good line. Yeah. I love that jam. The Girlfriend is a psychological thriller. Right. How do we set up the series?
Olivia Cooke
It's boy meets girl. It's girl meets the mum. Mum fancies the sun. It's for the perverts. It's for the freaks. Mum and son kiss on the lips.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay. Really? There you go.
Announcer
All right. The Girlfriend premieres September 10th on Prime Video.
Jimmy Fallon
Debbie Gibson joins us after the break.
Announcer
Stick around. 21 pounds. Yeah. Let's get down. Thanks.
Jimmy Fallon
Our next guest is a multi platinum pop music icon who has a brand new memoir out tomorrow called Eternally Electric. The message in my music. Please welcome Debbie Gibson.
Announcer
That's what I'm talking about. Come on.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. Debbie Gibson. Yeah. Oh, welcome. Thank you.
Jenna Andrews
That was some entry.
Jimmy Fallon
Welcome back.
Jenna Andrews
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
Welcome back to the show. I will say thank you. You were here. You played with roots.
Jenna Andrews
I did. That was. Oh, my God. That was a thrill of a lifetime. That was amazing.
Jimmy Fallon
But now we're here. Now we have. The book is coming out tomorrow. Tomorrow it's out.
Jenna Andrews
I can't believe.
Jimmy Fallon
Are you excited?
Debbie Gibson
I am.
Jenna Andrews
I mean, it's surreal. You know, a lot of people are gonna know things about me that they didn't know before. And it's a time, though, where I feel like everybody's looking to each other for inspiration. And, like, I grew up in a time where it was like the, you know, pop stars were in some ivory tower. But now I think everybody needs to know that we all go through challenges. And I've been through, like, name a life stressor, and I've been through it, and it's in the book.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Jenna Andrews
And I'm feeling better than ever now. And that's why it was like, it was time to write about it and share all of that. So for people going through those same things, they know that there's the other side.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, of course there is. Yes. I do want to talk about some of the amazing things that you have done in your career that you talk about in the book, but you've had so many hits. Only in my dreams. Shake youe Love Electric Youth. I know. I'm all, they're my faves.
Jenna Andrews
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
But at 17, you became the youngest person to write, produce, and perform A number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
Debbie Gibson
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
And you still hold the record as the youngest female to do that. Congratulations. Yes.
Jenna Andrews
Thank you.
Announcer
Isn't that amazing?
Jenna Andrews
Thank you. It's crazy to me. It's really crazy to me, but I was just this little girl making music in our garage turned laundry room turned playroom, turned studio.
Jimmy Fallon
Really?
Jenna Andrews
Yeah. Truly in Merrick Long Island.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Jenna Andrews
Yeah. And I was like, yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, yeah.
Announcer
Strong Island.
Jenna Andrews
Strong Island. Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
We allow three people from Merrick Long island in every show.
Jenna Andrews
And by the way, two of them are my sisters. Oh, is that one of my friends?
Debbie Gibson
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
There he is. Come on. Welcome to the show. Yeah, but what was that like? What do you mean you're in your garage? And how would you record? Like, what would you do? Or.
Jenna Andrews
I mean, so there's a couple of things. So first of all, you know, it was a time where, like, there was no Internet, so you had to get to all the radio program directors in the country. So I was literally, you guys will appreciate this splicing tape. I was like, doing these customized radio IDs. So, like, if you were on the radio, I'd be like, jimmy Fallon's got the music. I thought it was only in my dreams. And I would send it, like my mom and I would send that to like 350 DJs around the country. And I had before that, though, I had my sisters will remember their cassette recorders lined up on the ironing board. And I was attempting multi track recording. So I had this little Casio synthesizer.
Jimmy Fallon
So I mean, now we have GarageBand and we have all this stuff, Apple and Pro Tools.
Jenna Andrews
But back then, and I know you're always doing loopy, but this was like. Because you actually couldn't loop because you just had to keep playing things live. Right?
Jimmy Fallon
You were in your garage.
Jenna Andrews
In the garage, yes. Yes. So I would play a part on the synthesizer into one tape recorder and then play it back while playing another part. And I would. And by the end, you heard and like some faint little arrangement in the background. And my mom was like, this is ridiculous. I've got to get a loan because they didn't have the money. Got to get a loan from Cousin Joe. Thank you, Cousin Joe.
Announcer
Thank you, Cousin Joe. Shout out to Cousin Joe.
Jenna Andrews
To start me with a Tascam 4 track and a little linen rack mount sequencer. And I was this little techie girl and.
Jimmy Fallon
But you had the drive.
Jenna Andrews
Yeah, and I had the vision. Like I think. I think a lot of people have that vision. But I had a mom who was amazing. Mom, amazing. And yes, the right kind of crazy because like, you know, we got the music out to the people, which was always the. It was always a. About the music, not about me. It was about those songs.
Jimmy Fallon
You brought the keyboard that you had.
Jenna Andrews
I brought the keyboard from 1983 that I used to.
Jimmy Fallon
Whoa, that is good. Casio Acacio. Yes.
Announcer
I mean, that's the greatest. Eternally electric. The message in my music is available tomorrow. More to nitro at tonight. Stick around, everybody. My thanks to Fred Orison, Olivia Cook, Debbie Gibson and the Roots right there. Good night, everybody. Get involved Gotta get involved get, get, get involved get into it do it uh huh. Yes.
