Yippee. Thank you.
Appreciate it.
Thank you so much. Yes. Yeah. I love you.
Hot crowd tonight.
Jimmy Fallon
Welcome, everybody. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Tonight Show. You're here.
Audience Member
You made it.
Jimmy Fallon
Well, guys, earlier tonight they had the national Christmas tree lighting at the White House. Yep, it was a fun night. When President Biden came out, all the kids were like, look, the ghost of Christmas past. But get this. After strong winds knocked last year's tree to the ground, this year's tree will be supported by eight steel cables. Yep, these are the same cables the White House uses to walk Biden around the front lawn. I think that's the exact same same ones. Meanwhile, during tonight's ceremony, the winds were over 40 miles an hour. Yeah, Biden's skin looked like when a bulldog sticks his head out of the car window. Yep, the National Christmas tree lighting was a little different than last night's Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting. For instance, this was the lineup from New York.
Kelly Clarkson
It's Christmas in Rockefeller Center. Don't miss Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson singing Winter Wonderland, the Backstreet Boys and the Radio City Rockettes. Only on NBC.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, nice. Now check out the lineup down in.
Kelly Clarkson
Washington, D.C. it's the national Christmas tree lighting. Don't miss Joe Biden playing the spoons, Bernie Sanders screaming Silent Night, holiday bird calls from Chuck Grassley and nine septuagenarian senators trying to do a kick line, then going to the hospital. Only on C Span plus.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Holiday Berthold.
Listen to this. Today, Fox News presented President Elect Trump with the Patriot of the Year award. Yeah, it's a huge honor because out of all the totally made up awards, Patriot of the Year is the biggest. I'm joking. Patriot of the Year is one of the most prestigious awards made out of macaroni. You see this? Trader Joe's is suing a New York City wine shop called Joe's Wine for encroaching on its brand here. Now, to speak about this accusation is an employee of Joe's Wine. Thank you for being here. What is your take on the lawsuit?
Trader Joe's Employee
It's nonsense, Jimmy. We're not trying to rip off Trader Joe's.
Jimmy Fallon
Interesting. I mean, they seem pretty upset about this. So you don't think they'll win the suit?
Trader Joe's Employee
Not a chance.
Jimmy Fallon
Sorry, sorry. Did you just change shirts?
Trader Joe's Employee
Nope. This is a classic Joe's Wine, button down.
Jimmy Fallon
Got it. All right. So how are your colleagues feeling about all this?
Trader Joe's Employee
They're not concerned at all, Jimmy.
Jimmy Fallon
I feel like Trader Joe's has that same bell system.
Trader Joe's Employee
No, no, no, no, no. Joe's wine has always been highly bell focused. Speaking of which, are you looking to purchase a few wines today?
Jimmy Fallon
Uh, no, thank you.
Trader Joe's Employee
You are gonna love these vinos. Oh, this one's from California. You ever been? I'm heading out there in January. Super excited about it. So I guess if I'm not here the next time you visit, I'm probably boogie boarding.
Jimmy Fallon
I gotta be honest, you're giving off some very serious Trader Joe's energy right now.
Trader Joe's Employee
Oh, that's ridiculous. Also, can I just say, you look great in that suit? It's very sharp.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay? That's exactly how Trader Joe's employees flirt.
Trader Joe's Employee
Listen, I'm just happy to be working at Trader Joe. Sorry. I'm sorry. I mean Trader Joe's. Excuse me. Trader Joe's.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay. Boy.
Sebastian Stan
Sorry.
Trader Joe's Employee
I got my face. Let me try that again.
Jimmy Fallon
Trader Joe's an employee of Joe's Wine.
Everyone, be sure to try our popular PB&J snack food. Thank you for having me.
Thank you very much. Finally, I heard that this holiday season, Uber is delivering Christmas trees to customers nationwide. Yeah. You know your tree came from an Uber driver when there are several bites taken out of it.
We have a great show, everyone. Give it up for the Roots.
Well, great news over here. Last night, NBC aired my special Holiday Seasoning Spectacular. And I want to thank everyone who watched it. It was so much fun to make, and I hope you enjoyed it. It was number one in the time slot. Number one.
Great. So happy. Thank you very much. That was cool.
It's streaming now on Peacock, if you want to watch it again or put it on in the background as you're decorating your house or whatever. It's family friendly. It is. It is weird. It is mostly original comedy holiday songs off my album Holiday Seasoning. But. But do you.
Oh.
The special's good. And it's odd. Do you know those holiday songs that start with church bells ringing? It's like ding dong, ding dong, ding. So this special is me traveling around the city looking for my Christmas ding dong, whatever that might mean to you. Yeah, exactly. And I run into friends like Justin Timberlake, Meghan Trainor, Mariah Carey and the.
Roots, and we sing songs.
The special will re air on NBC December 18th at 8:00pm if you want to plan a party, it is a joy bomb. You'll Love it. Anyway, the reviews are in and I'd like to read a few reviews, if you don't mind. This one here. Well, this is a good one. This says, amazing show. Loved every single song. It just gave me pure joy. Aw, that's nice. This one says, yo, this Jimmy Fallon Christmas music kind of bangs. This one says, I feel like I should be high watching this Jimmy Fallon Christmas special. This one says, the Jimmy Fallon Christmas special is, like, not real. I feel like I'm watching Pee Wee's big adventure. And then this one says this Jimmy Fallon Christmas special is. Yeah. All right.
Well, we'll be right back with Angelina Jolie, everybody. Ding dong, ding dong, ding dong ding.
Who gets a Christmas ding ding dong. You can only get one if you sing along.
Our first guest is an Oscar winning.
Actress and a talented director and producer. Her new movie Maria is in select theaters now and comes to Netflix December 11th. Please welcome Angelina Jolie.
Audience Member
Oh.
Jimmy Fallon
Welcome to the show.
Feel the love.
Audience Member
Feel the love.
Jimmy Fallon
Thank you for being here.
Angelina Jolie
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
I noticed that you're barefoot. Did you forget your shoes?
Angelina Jolie
No, I broke my toe yesterday.
Jimmy Fallon
You're kidding me.
Angelina Jolie
And I tried to find a comfortable shoe, but I just decided, no, you.
Jimmy Fallon
Don'T have to wear shoes. Yeah, Just be comfortable.
We're just happy you're here.
Yeah.
Thank you for being here.
I want to get into Maria. I want to talk about Maria Callas. I want to talk about the great job you did. But first, I want to congratulate you on winning a Tony. You produced the Outsider.
This is massive.
Here's the cast here. We're lucky enough to have them on our show. Here's them in action as well. What made you want to peruse the Outsiders?
Angelina Jolie
Oh, well, it's. By the way, I get very nervous on talk shows. I get very uncomfortable. And I haven't done one for, like a decade. And you know, this. I am so. This is so not my. This is so not my thing.
Jimmy Fallon
No, that's not your thing. Don't worry about it. This is. I'll be fine.
Angelina Jolie
Yeah, I produce. I produced it because I saw an early workshop of it and I loved it and I loved what they were doing with it and the director and the composers.
Andrew Ridgely
Such a great job.
Angelina Jolie
I thought it was amazing. And my daughter also loved it.
Jimmy Fallon
Were you an outsider since growing up in school? Were you?
Laura Peak
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, I think. Yeah, I wasn't really an outsider. I was more of like a weirdo probably, but I think I thought you.
Angelina Jolie
Were a good outsider. Yeah, I think it's good to be an outsider.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Angelina Jolie
I think I was thinking what it is to be an outsider. And I think that's just to be somebody who's comfortable with other people maybe not understanding who you are or knowing what you do or you don't feel as understood or connected, but you know who you are. And you're OK with that.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, I like that. Maybe I was a little bit.
Angelina Jolie
That's a good thing.
Jimmy Fallon
I know your daughter worked with you on this production. Does any of your kids want to be on camera or behind the camera or in the.
Angelina Jolie
My kids, I think some of them off camera, behind the scenes, but they really, really want to be. Especially Shiloh would really like to be private.
Jimmy Fallon
Just private?
Angelina Jolie
Just private.
Jimmy Fallon
Just live your life.
Angelina Jolie
Not photographed, not on a thing. I think her most of all would like privacy.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. It just must get so tricky because everyone's so famous around them.
Angelina Jolie
But it wasn't their choice, Correct?
Jimmy Fallon
Absolutely. Yeah. No.
Angelina Jolie
Right. So some people are more comfortable with public. Some people are more comfortable on talk shows.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Angelina Jolie
And some people are not.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes, you are incredible. As I told you and Maria, congratulations on this. You're getting rave reviews. You're an incredible actor. But. But I saw some things online. I was wondering if I could ask you if these rumors are true of other careers that you might have had.
Angelina Jolie
Oh, no.
Jimmy Fallon
I'd be interested to see if any of these are real. Ok. Ok. First of all, is it true that prior to acting you were studying to become a funeral director?
Yes, that was the one.
I didn't think. A funeral director?
Yeah.
Why?
How.
Angelina Jolie
Doesn'T it make sense though? No. My grandfather died and I remembered thinking, this is not how they should be. This should be a celebration of life. And since I'm not afraid of death and I was comfortable with it, I thought this would be a great career path for me.
Jimmy Fallon
I could throw these parties.
Angelina Jolie
I could like make this better. I could do a thing here.
Jimmy Fallon
We need more people like that.
Angelina Jolie
And you know, it shouldn't be that. It's my fallback career now.
Jimmy Fallon
That's great. I did not know that about you. Is it true that you can still becoming a pilot?
Angelina Jolie
Yes, I'm a pilot.
Jimmy Fallon
You are a pilot?
Angelina Jolie
I am.
Jimmy Fallon
See, I would guess that you would be.
Angelina Jolie
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
But I don't know why.
Angelina Jolie
And my son Matt is. Maddox is training to be a pilot now too. He's actually. He is a pilot now.
Jimmy Fallon
Really? Of planes or helicopters or do they both count the same?
Angelina Jolie
No, they are different. Some of the licenses are the same.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay. No, so you could fly a plane right now. We had to just get out of here together.
Angelina Jolie
I got you. I got you.
Jimmy Fallon
Let's go to the Bahamas and do it up. Yeah. Finally. Is it true that you love standup comedy? At one point, you considered trying stand up.
Angelina Jolie
That is definitely a no, you would not.
Jimmy Fallon
You would not do that. No, no. But you love comedy. Yeah, but you would never.
Angelina Jolie
I could deal with a funeral. I could deal with flying a plane 10,000ft in the air. But not what you do.
Jimmy Fallon
Talking terrifies.
Angelina Jolie
No, I'm doing okay.
Jimmy Fallon
That's good to know. I gotta say, I love this movie. I saw it last week, I got a screening of it. I would go see it in theaters if you can see Maria, because the sound is gorgeous, the shots are beautiful. Was it all shot in Paris or was it all. Is it all different?
Angelina Jolie
Some Paris, some Budapest, some Greece.
Jimmy Fallon
Knockout. When you get that script, you go, yeah, I can do this. I could play with one of the greatest opera singers on earth.
Angelina Jolie
No, I'd never sung before. And it was one of those, you know, you all have. Everybody's got something that makes them. This is not something I can do. And I was pretty sure that was one of the things. I can't sing. But you're an actor, and so they ask you if you can do whatever you can do, and you say yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, of course. Yeah. I can tap dance. Sure, why not? Yeah. How long you need me to tap dance? And then they go do it, and you go, do I really have to? Can we write that out of the movie? You're phenomenal.
Angelina Jolie
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
As a singer, do you get. I mean, you're nervous on talk shows, but do you get nervous singing?
Angelina Jolie
For me, I was so nervous, I had to learn how to sing because the director, the wonderful director, Pablo Lorraine, he sent me to Singing Italian and many things for seven months. Because you can't fake sing opera.
Jimmy Fallon
No.
Angelina Jolie
Which I didn't know.
Jimmy Fallon
You're like, I'm an actor. Leave me alone.
Yeah.
Angelina Jolie
And I thought in the beginning, I thought I had this great plan. I thought, I know what I'll do. It'll be a fun, like, start of the movie gift. I'll just buy everybody earplugs.
Jimmy Fallon
And then.
Angelina Jolie
Yeah, it'll be my way of, like, clearing the space and not being as nervous.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Angelina Jolie
But I didn't. I had to sing.
Jimmy Fallon
So I. I feel like I get more nervous in front of just, like, one person as opposed to a crowd. Like, I get, like, if I sing in front of, like, two people, I go, never mind. But if it's in front of everybody, I can be like, I audition, I auditioned, and I didn't get the part. Next thing, look at how this is phenomenal. I mean, really did a great job. How gorgeous this is. I think this is going to be giant for the. For the opera community, because it did remind me. I go, oh, I should go to see more opera. This is the most beautiful thing. But also, I will say, the wardrobe and hair and makeup department did a great job. You look like Maria Callas. I didn't realize this. At the end of the film, they show you photos of Maria and. And it's so similar. I go, wow. I mean, it's not. I mean, you really knocked it out of the park. Congratulations on this.
Angelina Jolie
Thank you very much.
Jimmy Fallon
How do we, Angelina, how do we set up? This film is the Last Days, right. Of Marie Callis.
Angelina Jolie
Yes, the film is the Last Days, and it's her reflecting on her life. And I'm very bad at this.
Jimmy Fallon
No, that was it. Yeah. Is reflecting on her life.
Angelina Jolie
Does that sell a movie?
Jimmy Fallon
No. Well, when you see the clip, you'll see why it's great. But also, I think, you know, she's kind of reflecting on her life and interviewing herself. Talking to herself.
Angelina Jolie
Well, she's talking to her drugs.
Jimmy Fallon
She's talking to her drugs. It is true.
Angelina Jolie
It is true.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Spoiler. But I got that.
Angelina Jolie
We should be Quaaludes.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. It was Mandrax, right? Yeah, it's Quaaludes. And I go, oh, this is tricky. So she's just talking and going, yeah. No. And then correcting herself and having a full conversation with herself, kind of. It's fascinating.
Angelina Jolie
If you look closely, it's a big opera, and it's based on a lot of the. She did many performances in many tragedies and many operas. And so the. You don't have to know opera to understand the film or appreciate the film, but if you do know opera, you can understand that there's a lot of, you know, why things come at a certain time and how she's the sum of the tragedies that she played in her life. And the film is kind of an opera.
Jimmy Fallon
Angelina Jolie, everybody. Maria is in select theaters now and comes to Netflix December 11th. We'll be right back with more Tonight Show.
Stick around.
Our next guest is a fantastic actor.
Who'S been receiving incredible reviews for his work in two movies, a Different man and the Apprentice, which are both available on digital. Everyone, please welcome Sebastian Stan.
Sebastian Stan
Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas to You.
Jimmy Fallon
Absolutely. Yeah. Welcome back to the show. It's always good to see you, man. You're having a big year. You have two giant movies that you're getting crazy great reviews.
Sebastian Stan
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Congratulations. And you're getting a lot of awards attention and awards buzz and. Yeah. Do you like going to award shows? Do you like getting these?
Sebastian Stan
Well, it's. It's awkward. It's interesting because you're seeing all these amazing people, you know, that we. That you grew up with. And then you see them and you want to talk to them and say, hi. I do get nervous. And then sometimes you get lucky. You pass each other, you know, like, this happened to me at the Academy gal. I ran to Steven Spielberg and he.
Jimmy Fallon
Now we're talking.
Sebastian Stan
Yeah. He came up and he said, hey, I just want to let you know, I saw both of the films and I love them. And I was like, jurassic Park's the first movie I saw in a theater. So there's that. And that's very gratifying.
Jimmy Fallon
It's so funny to talk to. I mean, those people, like. I mean. But these two movies are very different films.
Sebastian Stan
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
One is a different man, and that just.
Sebastian Stan
Both about people that lose themselves.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, interesting. Yeah, yeah, yeah. If you don't know the Apprentice. Yeah, I'll have to get to that. Yeah. But let me give you some praise for a different man. It has a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. You won the award for best leading performance at the Berlin Film Festival. That is massive. Thank you. Yesterday, it was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards and one more the other night, it won best feature at the Gotham Awards.
Come on, Sebastian Scott. That's how you do it.
Audience Member
Come on, buddy.
Sebastian Stan
I gotta get you to record that.
Jimmy Fallon
On a voice note. Come on, you deserve it. Here you are with the cast and different crew from a different man at the Gotham Awards and at the beginning of your movie, your character has the same condition, right?
Sebastian Stan
Neurofibromatosis, which is the condition that Adam Pearson in the movie has. And, yeah, it's a really beautiful film. Not just because of how it speaks about disability and our discomfort around it and how we need to learn how to talk about it more. But it's really more relatable for everybody because no matter how you look, it's about losing yourself. And if you don't accept who you are. So, I mean, who out there isn't fantasizing about a different life? I mean, we got social media, we got everything. Consumerism selling us always to be different and be somebody else. And it's about sort of owning yourself. So I play this actor who has this condition. He has a chance to sort of change his life, look like everybody else. He thinks it's going to be the life that he wants, and he actually loses out on the life he's supposed to have and spends the rest of time watching somebody else live it.
Jimmy Fallon
So, yeah, it's fantastic. Here's the poster, by the way, of you.
Sebastian Stan
Yeah. So it's actually me in the prosthetics. And then after the change, it's interesting because there was this review that I really loved which said, I don't get this movie. Is it a thriller? Is it a comedy? Is it a tragedy? And it's really all of the above.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, it's all of it. Yeah. You do a lot, but you do that. But then you do the Apprentice, which should explain you play a young Donald Trump in the 70s and 80s.
Sebastian Stan
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Would you?
Kelly Clarkson
Why?
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, why? I think of you. I go, oh, this guy's perfect to play Donald Trump. Sure. Yeah. But did you have any trepidation when they offered you to this role?
Sebastian Stan
Did he go, like, of course. I really asked the director. I said, I just don't understand, like, why am I the guy to be getting this call? And he goes, well, you're just really good at, you know, humanizing horrible people. And I was like, thanks.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow. Wow. Thank you very much. I guess.
Sebastian Stan
Yeah. And then two weeks before we're about to start shooting, he goes. He's like, well, you know, originally I wanted to cast a woman to play the part. And I was like, we need to restart.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. I'm Sebastian. Yeah. But I read somewhere that people told you not to take this part, and that gave you more energy to take the part.
Sebastian Stan
Of course. Because I'm sure, you know, it's like every time somebody says to you, don't do something, you want to do it more. But I did. I was at this dinner with the CEO of a studio who I asked, actually, I said, hey, what do you think about me playing this part? And he said, don't do that. You're going to alienate half the country. You're Bucky Barnes. And I was like, I know. And he's brainwashed, too.
Trader Joe's Employee
Right.
Jimmy Fallon
But after. But you're great in it. You're fantastic. And this as well, is a totally different part than anything you've done. But then I just saw that you were doing. Is it Thunderbolts?
Sebastian Stan
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
For Marvel.
Sebastian Stan
Very exciting.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Is there any. How do you go from your playing Donald Trump and then going into. Do you get kind of. Do you slip out of character by mistake?
Sebastian Stan
Well, you know, it's interesting because sometimes certain things linger, like certain mannerisms. And weirdly, for the first time in this movie, I actually have to wear like a suit and tie in the film as Bucky bars. And every time I put on a tie in the suit, some stuff would slip out and so I'd have to tell the director to kind of watch my lips and things.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, yeah. The Avengers. The Avengers are very. It's half. It's my Slippery Sebastian.
Audience Member
Stan, everyone.
Jimmy Fallon
The Apprentice and A Different man are available on digital. We'll be right back with more tonight Show.
Stick around.
Audience Member
Everybody's the greenest said it. I mean it. I did it because I need it.
Jimmy Fallon
Leave it if needed.
Audience Member
Write it down and read it. Asphalt to see that my last name to Tyson.
Jimmy Fallon
Our next guest is a Grammy nominated multi platinum musician and one of the founding members of the legendary group Wham. Their brand new EP celebrating the 40th anniversary of their hit song Last Christmas is available December 13th. Please welcome to the show Andrew Ridgely.
Who sits first.
Yes. Andrew Ridgely, welcome to the show.
Andrew Ridgely
Good morning.
Jimmy Fallon
I love you.
Andrew Ridgely
Thanks for having me.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm happy you're here. You're actually getting an honor in the city.
Andrew Ridgely
I am, yeah. I am collecting. Being presented the Anglo American Cultural award by the St. George's Society of New York. Yeah. A charity.
Jimmy Fallon
Congratulations.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah, thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm so happy.
Andrew Ridgely
First of many here.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Well, hopefully. Of course, of course. Yeah. Obviously you founded the group Wham. You guys started in 1981.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah, kind of.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Andrew Ridgely
We had a school band that imploded under the weight of its talent.
Jimmy Fallon
What was the name of the band again?
Andrew Ridgely
The Executive.
Jimmy Fallon
That's right, the Executives. Yeah. And how many were in the Executive?
Andrew Ridgely
Well, we morphed. We started off with five and we went up to about seven or eight, then down to four, the definitive four, which lasted about six weeks.
Jimmy Fallon
And then you and George go, let's start.
Andrew Ridgely
Well, we had no choice.
Jimmy Fallon
Everyone left. Yeah, we're down to just go, hey, are we anything or what? Yeah, we're good, right?
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah, just, you know, muddle on. Yeah, so, yeah, we did. And.
Jimmy Fallon
And who thought of the name Wham?
Andrew Ridgely
It was kind of. It just. It was there because we had the song Wham Rap and we had the Wham Rap.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, it was that Wham Rap. Club Tropicana.
Andrew Ridgely
We had Wham Rap then Young Guns and Bad Boys. And Club Trop. That was the order. That was the. Yeah, yeah. Well, and many more.
Jimmy Fallon
Well, of course. I mean, yeah. I mean, we'll get into Careless Whisper. Wake me up before you go. Go. We'll get onto that. But so. So you start with Wham. Rap. And you go, let's just call ourselves Wham.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah, I mean, it seemed like we were in a club, actually. Myself, Shirley and George, we used to go out together. We had an inseparable trio when we were younger. And we. We were dancing in the club and I think I Sugarhill Gang had just come out and I was sort of rapping to and singing this Wham, Bam, I am the man. And just seemed like at the club.
Jimmy Fallon
That's what you yell when you're at the club. Yeah.
Andrew Ridgely
I was young.
Jimmy Fallon
Wham, Bam, I am the man. Hey, not bad.
Andrew Ridgely
I was young and stupid.
Jimmy Fallon
I like that. I might steal.
Andrew Ridgely
Now I'm old and stupid.
Jimmy Fallon
I might steal everybody. I like that. But I got to meet you last year at the Rock Roll hall of Fame dinner, and you were so nice to me, but I just seen the documentary.
Andrew Ridgely
Pleasure to meet you.
Jimmy Fallon
No, I freaked out when I saw the documentary.
Andrew Ridgely
You were the smileiest guy there.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm very happy wherever I go, but I'm happy to see you. I was. Oh, my gosh. And I just want to tell you, because I was such a fan of Wham. My sister loved you and introduced me to you guys, and so she had posters of you. And then I watched this documentary and I didn't know any of your story. I knew what I thought of maybe George's story, but I didn't know your story, your side of it.
Andrew Ridgely
Well, I mean, our stories were sort of inextricably enmeshed. And I think, you know, a lot of people may have. But certainly the documentary, I think, revealed to people what the essence of Wham was and how inextricably linked it was. After us. To Wham And Wham. To us.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, I just. The thing that knocked me out was the popularity of Wham. And arenas and stadiums. And then you go to George, hey, I don't think you're done. I think your star is going to go even higher. And I'm so thankful for taking this ride with you.
Andrew Ridgely
Well, I mean, you know, it became evident to the two of us that his talent was going to take him somewhere. That he really, as an artist, the parameters in which. Which Wham. Imposed were too limiting for him. So inevitably, as he grew as an artist and a person, he was going to have to step without those boundaries.
Jimmy Fallon
But is that hard on you?
Andrew Ridgely
Because you.
Jimmy Fallon
That's your fame, that's everything.
Andrew Ridgely
My aspirations were pretty limited. I wanted to be in a band and that was it.
Jimmy Fallon
And you did.
Andrew Ridgely
And I wanted to be in a band with him.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Andrew Ridgely
So, you know, fortunately I managed to select the world's best singer songwriter at the time, so.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, exactly. That's.
Andrew Ridgely
It worked out quite well.
Jimmy Fallon
And you wrote and you recorded stuff. Demos and stuff at your house or George's house.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah, I'm mean it. I mean, wham was amateur. It was so amateur. It was great. You know, we. We had a. Back in those days, you recorded on a four track thing. Yeah, Cassette tape. And you know, for about $10 we hired this thing. Yeah, it was five quid, I think. Yeah, yeah. And it was just. Yeah. All very. In my mum's front room. The.
Jimmy Fallon
There's some pictures of you guys there.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah, that was not my front. Mum's front room.
Jimmy Fallon
No, that's not.
Andrew Ridgely
We'd come along a little bit by then that much with wearing shorts, but.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. And then here's one of my favorite things. Your mom is a great documentarian of your stuff and has a scrapbook of everything. She loved herself.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah. Bless her. Yeah. God bless her Soul. She compiled 50 scrapbooks over the years.
Jimmy Fallon
Five Zero Scrapbooks is just how much she loves her son. And it's amazing, you'll see. But one of my favorite things is this note that you wrote on your bedroom door to your parents. Right.
Laura Peak
Yeah.
Andrew Ridgely
So. So yeah, we had such a legendarily bad record deal that we had no money. We were still living at home. And then. And we. I left a note on mum's door. On my door rather, because I had promo explain this to me because it said. Yeah, I'd made a mistake with the Wake me up up. I repeated up, up. So I put, you know, before you go, go.
Jimmy Fallon
So you said wake me up, up before you go. And you go. I said the word up twice. I'll just add go twice.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
And that. You taped that to your door. Wake me up, up before you go, go. And did you. Did you go. That's a title of giants. No, of course not.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah. I don't know how yog saw it actually, because that's George.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Andrew Ridgely
And George was yog too.
Jimmy Fallon
You call him.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But George saw that.
Jimmy Fallon
He goes, I think this is lyrics to something.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah, yeah. You know, and then that's what happens when you're a genius.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. I'm talking to one. Yeah. So the two geniuses, but you, then. How does last Christmas come about? When do you write that? When do you go, I think we got something that might stick, might be a hit a little bit.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah. My part in that one was fairly limited as well. But he drew. We were killing time, his mum and dad's house one Sunday. It was a dreary sort of winter's day. And the soccer was on. We weren't watching it, but it was on. It was the only thing that was on TV in those days. And he went upstairs, he had this little recording thing, as I said, in the bedroom, and then came back down and said, andy, Ann, you gotta come and listen to this. And, yeah, I'm pretty sure I have whipped upstairs. And it was sort of, you know, the skeleton of last Christmas.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, yeah.
Andrew Ridgely
The keyboard part was there and the chorus, and it was.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, really?
Andrew Ridgely
Wow. Yeah. I mean, you know, you hear that the first time. And even its skeletal form, it was.
Jimmy Fallon
Evidently, it's one of the biggest songs on Earth forever. I mean, there's a game called Wamageddon. I don't know if you guys know, but it's a game you can play now when. If you go to bars, you have to see how long it takes until you hear Last Christmas.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
And when you hear it, you have to take a picture of yourself. Say, I'm out. I got.
Andrew Ridgely
Yeah, Yeah. I was out early this year, March in March.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. They started playing it. Yeah. And did you have any idea that it would be number one or be around this long?
Andrew Ridgely
I mean, it was written to be a number one. Yog, you know, in 1984, we had a fantastic year. Wake Me up was number one in the uk, in the States, and Kelly Swisper was number one. And we had, you know, it was just a big, big year. And Yog wanted the Cherry on the Cake was a Christmas song and it had to be a Christmas number one, which it eventually was 39 years later.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. He never got a chance to see it be number one.
Andrew Ridgely
No. That's a great shame. Yeah, he would.
Jimmy Fallon
George, if you can hear us, somehow you did it, buddy.
You crushed it.
We love you and you crushed it. Thank you so much for being here, Andrew Ridgely.

Hello, everybody. I'm so happy to be here. It's the end of 2024. Have we had a good year? Yeah, I had a very good year. I'm not trying to brag. I had something happen to me this year that I've never had happen. I got my identity stolen this year, you guys. Yeah. At first you're mad, and then you're like, me? Really? You wanna be me? I had four hot dogs for lunch. You wanna be me? This guy steals my identity. He opens up a bunch of credit cards in my name, a bunch of checking accounts in my name. He also opens up a sports betting account. All right? And then he wins $1,000 betting on sports. I call the company to close down the account. They send me the thousand dollars. You guys, it's the best year of my life. Drinks are on me, ladies and gentlemen. What a nice guy. I hope he keeps doing cool stuff with my identity. Just opens me a Roth. Ira, sends my dad a Christmas card, signs me up for therapy. What an angel. I also got married this year. I went back to Tennessee, where I'm from, to get married. We had a wonderful time. Yeah. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. We had a big Southern wedding. I had nine bridesmaids. Nine of them. It did satisfy a deep feminine urge that I didn't know I had, which is to rank all of my friends from least to most important. Okay? The power that gives you. I'm still drunk on it. Can you tell? Fellas, you see that line up next to a woman. There's a lot going on under the surface gals. You ever been, like, eighth? You ever been, like the eighth bridesmaid? You're like, how about you just don't invite me to the wedding, okay? Nothing's ruder than eighth. And I knew this was gonna be the case, especially being from the South. It turned out to be very true. I think it's very unnatural to bring together all of the most important women from different times in your life, okay? Those girls are never meant to meet each other. They hated each other so much. I was just like, hey, this is Jessie. We went to church camp together when we were 10. She doesn't think that women should vote. This is Amber. She's slept with the groom a lot. But she has great drugs and she loves to share. We're not getting rid of Amber. Amber stays. This is my cousin tamblyn. She's a 47 year old mother of four. She keeps crotch tapping all my bridesmaids and yelling, hoo.
Jimmy Fallon
Aha.
Laura Peak
She didn't get the vaccine. I put her at your table. We moved out to California a few years ago. I brought my bad habits with me to California. I'm a cigarette smoker. Anybody out there smoke cigarettes these days? Oh, they're all dead. Did you hear that? Wow. Not a peep. Sad. I've been smoking since I was a baby. It's the worst thing about me. I can't stop, okay? I can't stop. But nowadays, everybody is vaping. Everybody in this country is vaping. I feel like I'm the last woman alive doing analogy, you know, just smoking the analog cigarette. Okay? And people vape everywhere. Are you seeing teens on planes these days? They're just blowing it into their sweatshirt. It was huge puff of smoke. Like we can't see it. It's like it smells like watermelons and computers in here. Like, I can see it. I know what you're doing. I get all of my bad habits from my family. I love my family very much. They're all back in Tennessee. I have a grandfather in Tennessee that just turned 92 years old. Yes. He's the best guy. Best grandfather alive. He was so cool when we were growing. He was doing all the classics. Okay? Hide and seek. Forget about it. You're never finding this guy, all right? He'll snatch that nose right off your face. You're not getting that sucker back. All right? That's his. Now, he served in the air force for 22 years, all right? And he has done a lot of good things for me in my life. Yeah. Thank you very much. Very brave guy. Served in the air force for 20 years. He's do. He's done a lot of good things for me. Maybe the best thing is that I now have a USAA credit card. Do we know? It's a credit card insurance company for military members and their families. And I want to be clear. I didn't earn this thing. Okay? All right? I'm not strong. I'm not brave. My boobs hit me in the chin when I run. Okay? I don't deserve this thing, but I'm proud to have it. I'm glad to have it. I sometimes take it for granted. I sometimes forget it's associated with the military, if I'm being honest. And that can make for some embarrassing situations. Recently. I was on the road. I went out to breakfast by myself. I'm not trying to brag. I ate the biggest breakfast you've ever seen in your life, okay? And I took it right home. I was proud of myself. All right? I set down my USAA credit card, my nice waiter, he comes, he runs it, he brings it back me. When he does, he offers me a very sincere thank you for your service. Okay? And in my moment of forgetting that that was associated with the military, I thought that this grown man was congratulating me for finishing my big girl breakfast. Okay? I thought he was saying, good job, you fat idiot. Thanks for your service. I literally thought that's what he meant. And in the two seconds before I, I could think critically, realize he was obviously being sincere, what I decide to do in response is to slap my full belly like an oil baron finishing a steak, chuckle and go, yeah, buddy. Yeah, buddy. Oh, my God. All right. I'm Laura Pink.
