Well, guys, earlier tonight, President Trump launched his new prescription drug website, TrumpRx. Yeah.
Yeah.
Now you're able to buy Xanax from. The reason you need Xanax. That's interesting. That's right. Trump RX is the only pharmacy where the dosage instructions are. A lot of people are saying, too. A lot of people are saying two.
Josh Safdie
Well, get this.
Jimmy Fallon
It's not that Trump plans to install a statue of Christopher Columbus at the White House. Apparently, Trump's a big fan of Columbus because 1492 is also his cholesterol. Oh, well, guys, tomorrow night is the Winter Olympics opening ceremony.
Josh Safdie
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Here on NBC. We're excited.
And speed skater Aaron Jackson and bobsledder Frank Del Duca will be the flag bearers for Team usa. Erin says she's thrilled. While Frank said it would be tough to perform without three other guys pressed against him. It's like, turn, turn. Meanwhile, I read that the women's hockey team in Finland is dealing with a norovirus outbreak right now. Everyone in doubles luge is like, if that's true, then we're screwed.
Josh Safdie
I mean.
Jimmy Fallon
We'Re definitely. We definitely have. Guys, this has been one of the coldest winters on record. But, hey, there's no reason to fret because Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Yeah. And here to help us, to show us how to celebrate during the cold, is resident R and B duo Dirk and Sammy. Welcome to the show, guys.
Thank you for having us, Jimmy. Peace and love. Thank you. Yeah.
So you guys have some romantic advice for us, correct? Oh, yeah. Not just advice, but a little song. Oh, great. Let's hear it. Hey, baby.
Dirk
It's looking frightful out there.
Sammy
What do you say we get inside.
Jimmy Fallon
And get a little freaky?
Dirk
It's time to get freaky in the winter I need you to keep me warm don't need no heat when you're with me so let's wait out the storm First I'mma take my coat off Shake off all the snow that's right.
Sammy
Then I'mma take my scarf off Throw it on the floor oh, yeah.
Dirk
Next I'M gonna take my sweater off and the turtleneck underneath Then my vest.
Sammy
And my hoodie in my cardigan and now it's time for you and me.
Jimmy Fallon
To get freaky in the window.
Guys, Guys. Sorry, sorry, sorry, guys. I'm sorry.
That's.
Dylan O'Brien
It's just.
Jimmy Fallon
I know, but it's just a lot of layers of clothing you got there and. Yeah, it's cold, Jimmy.
Sammy
There's a feels like of like minus 100 degrees outside.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, I don't think it's that cold. Not when you're with us.
Sammy
Can we please continue with our song?
Jimmy Fallon
Okay.
Dylan O'Brien
Go ahead.
Jimmy Fallon
Baby.
Sammy
Now let's take our gloves off.
Dirk
Well, they're actually kind of tight, so.
Sammy
We'Re gonna have to bite them off.
Dirk
One finger at a time.
Jimmy Fallon
Like this. Can you help? Ouch. Forget it.
Dylan O'Brien
Sorry.
Jimmy Fallon
Forget it.
Dylan O'Brien
Forget it.
Jimmy Fallon
Forget.
Can we grab mine? Guys, guys, guys, guys, guys, guys. Maybe this wasn't the best idea.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Jimmy, we know what we're doing. You haven't given any advice. You're just singing about wearing too many clothes.
Sammy
The song doesn't end like that. We promise.
Dylan O'Brien
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Will you let us finish? There's only 17 minutes left. 17 minutes.
Hit it. Hit it. We back in? Let's go.
Sammy
Now that I got my gloves off.
Jimmy Fallon
I got 12 more layers on my legs and zipped up from the back. All right, that is enough. That's enough. Okay, Dirk and Sam, everybody. Love this. On.
All right.
Thank you.
Biting the gloves on. Well, some big movie news. Apple might make a sequel to their hit film, F1.
Ooh.
In fact, they just released a teaser. Check it out.

Josh Safdie

Dylan O'Brien
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
I'll show you what I mean. It's time for tonight's show superlatives.
Here we go. Tonight's show superlative.
Our first player is from the Patriots. It's their quarterback, Drake May. He was voted most likely to stand outside Hollister with his shirt off.
Sup?
Next up from the Seahawks is Sam Darnold.
Dylan O'Brien
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
He was voted most likely to bleed milk. Oh, wow. He needs a t rare award. No, Very white. Very white. Yeah. Up next from the Patriots is F10 Chishum III. He was voted most likely to get third place in an Amish Chris Martin lookalike contest. That's a tough contest. Wow, that's very tough. Competition's tough.
Yeah.
Clocks. Next up from the Seahawks is Cooper cup. He was voted ramen noodle iest. Next up from the Patriots is Robert Spillane. No, no. He was voted most likely to wear trojan brand hats. No, they made hats. XL rib for his play. Next up from the Seahawks is Jalen Sundell. He was voted most likely to be what happens if Luke combs, jelly roll and Kevin James run full speed into each other? And finally from the patriots is Hunter Henry. He was voted temu Tom Brady.
There you have it, everybody. Those are your superlatives. Stick around. We'll be right back with Halle Berry. Our first guest is an Oscar winning.
Actress starring in the new movie Crime 101, which opens in theaters February 13th. Please welcome Halle Berry.
Standing up for Halle Berry.
They love you. We love you. Welcome back to the show.
Hi.
Halle Berry
I really love you.
Jimmy Fallon
First of all, we have some very happy news that I wanted to discuss here, but you want to clarify something before we get into it?
Halle Berry
I do.
Jimmy Fallon
There's been some confusion.
Halle Berry
There's some confusion. It's going around that I. That my guy, Van Hunt, I've been dating him now for almost six years.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes, I know him. He's great.
Halle Berry
He is great, right?
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
No, don't be jealous. Don't be jealous. No, no, he's great.
We love him.
Halle Berry
He's great. Well, there's some confusion that he asked to marry me and I said no.
Jimmy Fallon
That's yes.
No, no, no, sir, stop. Oh, my.
But that is not.
Halle Berry
No, that's not the case. I did not say no. We just don't have a date. But of course I said yes. I would marry.
Jimmy Fallon
All right, good. Come on. Yay. That's right. I'm so happy. You guys are a great.
Dylan O'Brien
Oh, my God.
Jimmy Fallon
Security. Please have that guy taking out. Thank you so much. Bye. No, I'm so happy for. You guys are a great couple. Thank you. Congratulations.
Halle Berry
Thank you. He did put a little ring on it.
Jimmy Fallon
Ooh, my little. Oh, yeah. That's what I'm talking about. I'm so happy to see you. I know we talked in the past about your love of the Olympics.
Halle Berry
Yes, I love the Olympics.
Jimmy Fallon
Because you wanted to be a gymnast at one point, or you weren't gym.
Halle Berry
I was a gymnast.
Jimmy Fallon
That's right.
Halle Berry
I was. And I thought I would be like the black Nadia Comanici.
Sammy
Oh, my gosh.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Halle Berry
Was not in my car.
Jimmy Fallon
No, no, not at all. But you got to carry the torch.
Halle Berry
I did.
Jimmy Fallon
I remember that.
Halle Berry
I got to run the torch. That's the highlight. One of the highlights of my life. Dreaming of being an Olympian, to carry the torch, you know, up the Palais steps in Cannes, France, was, like, a lot of fun.
Jimmy Fallon
So I'm assuming you will be watching the Winter Olympics.
Halle Berry
Oh, my God. Yes. I'm gonna be watching and cheering.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Halle Berry
Ice skating. That's my thing also.
Jimmy Fallon
Really?
Halle Berry
Oh, my God. Every time I see. I think I can do it.
Jimmy Fallon
I know. I know. It looks so easy.
Halle Berry
It's so nice.
Jimmy Fallon
Then me on the rink. It's so embarrassing.
Halle Berry
Oh, so embarrassing.
Jimmy Fallon
Almost like holding onto the sides. It's so sad. But it's big sports weekend for NBC because we had the Winter Olympics, and then you have the super bowl on Sunday. Are you watching the super bowl, too?
Halle Berry
Of course.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Halle Berry
Mainly for Bad Bunny.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, yeah. He's gonna crush it. Crush it.
Halle Berry
He's gonna crush it.
Jimmy Fallon
I love that dude. He's gonna get everybody dancing.
Halle Berry
Yeah. I'm so happy that he's a party.
Jimmy Fallon
Every time he comes here, he has a party. Full on party.
Halle Berry
Yeah. He's gonna do a good job.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, he's gonna crush it. I follow you on the socials. You're a fun follow. And I saw that you did a lot of adventurous, kind of outdoorsy things over the summer. Do you know what I'm talking about?
Halle Berry
I did this summer. My 12 year old son. You know, when you have a boy, you have to do things like you can't go on a vacation to an island and sit Mai tais. When you have a 12 year old.
Jimmy Fallon
Boy, they want action.
Halle Berry
Action. You have to keep him engaged. So we took him to Utah. We always wanted to go to the Grand Canyon. I had never been, I mean, I'm ashamed to say, living in California, I had never been.
Josh Safdie
Me neither.
Halle Berry
So you neither?
Jimmy Fallon
Me neither.
Halle Berry
Well, you live here though, so.
Jimmy Fallon
I know, but I was dying to go. It's gorgeous, right?
It's gorgeous.
It's insane.
Halle Berry
We stayed at the Amangaree and they treated us like, you know, our feet didn't touch the ground. We climbed the Hoodoo Canyon, which was amazing. Like, we're like 500ft up in the air. I mean, it was crazy.
Jimmy Fallon
Halle.
This is.
This makes me crazy. This makes me queasy.
Halle Berry
I know.
Jimmy Fallon
Wait, that's a narrow bridge.
Halle Berry
It's like this little bridge that you take from one canyon to the other. And it kind of stuck. Swings and it's like I had to face, like my fears.
Jimmy Fallon
I was gonna say you're like posing and smiling after this picture. You're like, stop.
Josh Safdie
Oh, my gosh.
Jimmy Fallon
Like, I would freak out. And then here's your son climbing. He's going for it.
Halle Berry
Oh, my God. He had no fear. He was fearless.
Jimmy Fallon
That's unbelievable.
Halle Berry
I know. He was like. He was 11 doing that. And I have to say, Van sat this one out.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I would too.
Halle Berry
He was like, y' all are crazy. I'm not doing that.
Jimmy Fallon
I went rock climbing with my daughter too, but smaller than this scale. Tiny thing, but it's fun. I'm almost too big for little crevices. Crevasses. There was a thing called the lemon squeeze.
Oh.
And I definitely got my lemon squeeze. It was like the juice. I was stuck. I was stuck. She went ahead of me. I'm like, go. Bye. Go. I'm stuck here. From now on, give me food.
Josh Safdie
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
I didn't know what to do. Yeah.
Halle Berry
Lemon squeeze it.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. I want to talk about your movie, Crime 101. Congratulations, by the way. Critics are raving. Critics are saying best movie of the year. It's you. What a cast. Chris Hemsworth. Come on. You and Chris Hemsworth in a movie?
Halle Berry
Oh, he's pretty good.
Jimmy Fallon
You know, Both of you are pretty good. And Mark Ruffalo.
Halle Berry
Mark Ruffalo, good cast. Barry Keoghan.
Jimmy Fallon
Barry Keoghan.
Halle Berry
Nick Nolte makes an appearance.
Dylan O'Brien
Oh, gosh.
Jimmy Fallon
I love this type of movie, though. This is like a good thriller, but it's also a little sexy to it as well.
It is.
Halle Berry
It's a great. It's a throwback to those great movies of the past. Like, it's really adult, you know, in its way. Like Collateral Heat.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Halle Berry
The Thief. You know, those great movies.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Halle Berry
Propulsive. They have action, they have great characters. L A. It's a love letter to la. You know, it's shot beautifully. Our director, Bart Layton, just, like, shot the out of it.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, that was gonna be the slogan for the film. They changed it last minute. But crime 101. How do we explain what it's about and who you play?
Halle Berry
Well, it's about. Chris Hemsworth plays a high class thief. I play a high class insurance agent who has kind of aged out of her job because she's now 53, as they call me in the movie. And Mark Ruffalo plays a cop with a heart of gold. And it's sort of like this cat and mouse chase and we're all sort of intertwined and we're all sort of impacting each other's future in some way. And it's action exciting. And I can tell you this, when I was reading the script, I was like, this is so good, but this better end right. If this doesn't end right, I'm gonna be mad. And all I have to say is the ending is money. It is so satisfying.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes, it is good.
Yes, the ending is satisfying.
Yes, it's perfect. You want it. It's exactly great. Chris Hemsworth is on the show tomorrow night. Do you have any questions for me that I should ask him?
Halle Berry
You do? I have a question.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, really?
Halle Berry
He is going to not like this. So I just want you to know. But I want you to do me a solid and do it.
Jimmy Fallon
Of course I will.
Halle Berry
Please ask him this for you.
Jimmy Fallon
Anything.
Halle Berry
Ask him to tell you why I storm will not be in doomsday. He knows the answer.
Jimmy Fallon
I can't Ask him that.
Halle Berry
Yeah, ask him that.
Jimmy Fallon
What?
Ask him that question.
He knows the answer.
Halle Berry
He knows the answer. He might not be brave enough to tell you.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm going to do it. I'm going to ask him tomorrow.
Halle Berry
He knows the answer.
Jimmy Fallon
You're the best. I mean, come on.
Halle berry, everybody. Crime 101 opens in theaters February 13th. Get your tickets now.
Stick around. I say yes.
Yes. Lord to the beat all party Heaven.
People Guaranteed to be like heaven Brand.
New sneaker Real bad remedy man super.
Cheap Our next guest is a talented actor whose new movie, Send Help, is currently number one at the box office. He also stars in and an executive produced the film Twinless, which is streaming now on Hulu. Please welcome Dylan o'.
Dylan O'Brien
Brien.
Jimmy Fallon
Number one movie, not too shabby, bud.
Dylan O'Brien
Yeah, thanks.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Welcome to the show. Thanks for being here. By the way, I was gonna tell you how great you were in the Saturday Night Live movie. Oh, thank you. Saturday night, you played Dan Aykroyd.
Dylan O'Brien
I did.
Jimmy Fallon
You played very well.
Dylan O'Brien
Thanks.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Dylan O'Brien
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
I appreciate that. And I have a feeling. I did a little research. I think that you maybe manifested this role.
Dylan O'Brien
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Because I found a picture of you from your third grade talent show. Yeah. There you go. That's what I'm talking about. The Blues Brothers.
Yeah.
Dylan O'Brien
What's crazy is I did a whole press tour for this movie and forgot that this existed. So, like, they're always asking for stories and things, and I'm like, yeah, I got nothing.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, wait, I dressed like him.
Dylan O'Brien
I literally was him. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
I literally was him.
Josh Safdie
I know. I know.
Jimmy Fallon
You also star in the movie Twinless, which came out a few months ago. Congratulations on that. Thanks.
Thank you.
Dylan O'Brien
That movie means a lot.
Josh Safdie
Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
You recently nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. Congratulations for you. Thank you.
Dylan O'Brien
Appreciate that.
Jimmy Fallon
You executive produced it. What goes on behind, like, producing a movie? Do you like producing as well?
Dylan O'Brien
It's four years of hoping someone makes the job, you know?
Jimmy Fallon
Four years.
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dylan O'Brien
It took us four years. James Sweeney, who wrote the film and he's in it with me, and he.
Josh Safdie
Directed it as well.
Dylan O'Brien
He wrote the original draft in 2015. So this was. My gosh.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Dylan O'Brien
This is such a long labor of work.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, it's available now streaming on Hulu, if you guys want to check it.
Dylan O'Brien
Yeah, please check it out, please.
Jimmy Fallon
That's fantastic.
Josh Safdie
Thanks.
Jimmy Fallon
You play your twin. I do, yeah. In the title, babe. What was it like working opposite yourself or with yourself?
Dylan O'Brien
Well, I got it really easy. Cause, I mean, I never have to I don't want to spoil the movie, but I don't share the screen with myself.
Jimmy Fallon
Right.
Dylan O'Brien
So I never thought that I would actually be good at that and still might not be.
Jimmy Fallon
No, you were. You were. But I mean, was it odd? Like, did you. Going in and out of one character to another.
Dylan O'Brien
We separated the shoots schedules, actually, so, yeah. It's only three days where I played my twin, and then predominantly the shooting experience was me as the other one. Still alive.
Josh Safdie
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Congratulations on that.
Dylan O'Brien
Thanks, I appreciate it.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, it was great. I want to talk about. Send help, please. Yeah. Number one film in the country right now.
Crazy.
Josh Safdie
Yeah, thanks.
Jimmy Fallon
Not everyone can say that.
Dylan O'Brien
No, crazy.
Jimmy Fallon
You star opposite Rachel McAdams, who we love. You guys must have spent a lot of time getting to know each other.
Dylan O'Brien
Yeah. It was just us on a beach. And I said, yeah, that's great. It's just the funniest job that could come along. I was like, no one else? And they're like, no, it's just you guys on a beach. And I was like, I get her all to myself.
Josh Safdie
Thanks.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Dylan O'Brien
You choosing that spot was incredible.
Josh Safdie
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Sorry.
People love you. Yeah. One at a time. Everyone gets to say yes. Yes. Of course. They love.
Josh Safdie
Thanks.
Jimmy Fallon
He loves you.
Josh Safdie
Yeah.
Dylan O'Brien
Let's get the crowd involved.
Jimmy Fallon
No, yeah, of course.
It might as well.
It was a live audience. Yeah.
Dylan O'Brien
Utilize it.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Did Rachel, what was she like, getting to know her, just, you guys just on the beat.
Dylan O'Brien
She's. I mean, it's crazy because she is. She's the most grounded, like, a human can get, especially considering she's, you know, like a multi generational icon. So, like, she doesn't, like, believe that or know that or is really aware of that, I guess, like, to just so many people, she's, you know, such an entity in our minds. Right. So she'll just sort of very sweetly, like, she talks about her life experiences as if they're just normal experiences. And she doesn't kind of contextualize them with a name drop or anything, but. So I just started to realize at some point after a while of working with her that she'll be talking about something and you can start detecting. She'll be like, I play kind of a bad guy in this movie. And she's like, I played kind of a bully once. And I'm like, oh, yeah? Yeah, what was that like? And she's like, it's tough.
Jimmy Fallon
You gotta go home.
Dylan O'Brien
You shower it off. She's like, yeah, it was a movie. It was in high school, and, you know, a new Girl moves to town and I'm not very nice to her and I'm just like, are you talking about mean girls?
Jimmy Fallon
Pretty iconic famous movie. She's like, yes, you've seen it?
Dylan O'Brien
And I was like, yes, I have.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. I'm the one that saw it. I'm the only one that saw that.
Dylan O'Brien
And she's like, actually like that. She's. But she's the greatest. She's honestly the greatest human being on the planet.
Jimmy Fallon
I can't believe I once had a very romantic kiss in a movie.
Once. Yeah.
And you're like.
Dylan O'Brien
Like big bearded guy. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
You talking about the Notebook?
Dylan O'Brien
She's like, there's old people and then there's young people in the flashbacks on this Notebook.
Jimmy Fallon
You're jacked in this movie. You're ripped.
Whoa.
Yeah, yeah. Gotta say that. Yeah. It's the pants.
Dylan O'Brien
I don't know.
Jimmy Fallon
It's not the pants. We can cut that. No, I can edit my own edits. No, no, cut that one. You cut that one. Yeah, of course. No, but you trained. Your training was very. Yeah. Rigorous.
Dylan O'Brien
Yeah, well, I. I was coming off a very not hot few months when I got this job.
Jimmy Fallon
You know when you have.
Dylan O'Brien
You have periods like that, right?
Josh Safdie
No.
Dylan O'Brien
Okay.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm always. Just always. Yeah, yeah.
Josh Safdie
Always cooking.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, yeah, of course, baby. Have you had to get into shape?
Dylan O'Brien
Yes, quite quickly. And so I was kind of. I like working out outside and I would go to the park and try to do my little workouts. And like, you're feeling good? You know, and like I was feeling pretty good doing these workouts. There's apparently like. We were shooting in Sydney, Australia, for the first part of this film and there's like a TikTok. Yeah. Nice.
Jimmy Fallon
Cool.
Dylan O'Brien
Got some folks from down under here. Yeah, we've got some Australia enthusiasts.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Dylan O'Brien
So there's this guy who's like this TikTok, like paparazzi guy. And I guess I came to work one day and they. The crew had like shown me this video of me and I'm. Well, I brought it if you want. It's just for training tips. If, like, you want, I have the video.
Jimmy Fallon
Here's the.
Take a look at this one. Nice.
Dylan O'Brien
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Two.
Dylan O'Brien
There you go.
Jimmy Fallon
And there you. That's good. That's enough.
There you go.
Not bad.
There you go.
Ooh, I hurt.
Ow. Ow.
Hurt a little bit.
So two.
Wow, that's amazing training.
Dylan O'Brien
Thank you. That's the two. That's the two pull up workout. I could put it on a little.
Jimmy Fallon
The old two pumper Check out my.
Dylan O'Brien
Sub stack if you want my routine.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay.
Dylan O'Brien
Pretty humbling.
Jimmy Fallon
How do we set up what Send Help is about?
Dylan O'Brien
I mean, it's basically so Rachel McAdams plays a character named Linda Little, who is very underappreciated at her corporate job.
Jimmy Fallon
Yep.
Dylan O'Brien
And she's also kind of frumpy and, like, disliked, which is really funny.
Josh Safdie
It's Rachel McAdams.
Dylan O'Brien
Yeah. But she plays it really well. It's actually amazing how she sells it. And then I'm sort of the owner of the company's past and I kind of take his place as the boss. And I'm not a very nice guy, and I have no plans for her in the future. The company. She's been awaiting this promotion that my dad had promised her. I'm a very mean guy. Yes. And then we get in a plane crash and we crash on an island. And she's very much more equipped to survive the island than I am. So I sort of then become kind of her, you know, Cap T a.
Josh Safdie
Little bit, I guess.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Prisoner. Yeah, it's twisted. Twists and turns and twists.
Yeah.
And then another turn and then another twist. Another twist.
Dylan O'Brien
Yeah, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
And then a final twist.
Josh Safdie
So you saw it?
Jimmy Fallon
Ooh, I loved it. Are you kidding me?
I didn't know where it was gonna go, but I loved it. Come on.
That's Dylan o', Brien, everybody.
Thanks.
Send Help is in theaters everywhere now and Twinless is available on Hulu. More tonight's show after the break. Stick around. Everybody. Congratulation.

Come on now, Marty Supreme. How does it make you feel?
Josh Safdie
Oh, man, that's an impossible. It's impossible to understand. It really is. It's a crazy, surreal feeling. You have to understand this movie, as big as it is in scope, it's a personal movie. And all my films are personal. And those early films that I Did. They were made shoestring budgets. They, you know, I would go to a theater and there'd be, I don't know, three, four people in the theater. And I would be able to do a Q and A. And they would say, sir, you don't. Don't worry, you don't have to do a Q and A. I was like, no, I insist. And I'll do a two hour Q&A.
Jimmy Fallon
With three people. With three people.
Josh Safdie
At some point it just becomes a conversation, you know what I mean? And they have to kick me out at some point.
Jimmy Fallon
But you got people to go to the theaters and go see this movie. Congratulations.
Josh Safdie
Timmy's unbelievable in the film. And I think, yeah, Timothy, he's amazing.
Jimmy Fallon
Timothee Chalamet is great.
Josh Safdie
And the way he promoted the film was very conceptual, very cool. It was like the main character's named Marty Mauser. And, you know, it was like a conceptual marketing plan.
Jimmy Fallon
It was a great job, Marty, because.
Josh Safdie
It was like the dreams of the main character.
Jimmy Fallon
But as the co writer, as the director of this, how do you come up with this idea and go, I got the best idea. I'm going to do a movie about ping pong. And he goes, wait, what? Where did it come from?
Josh Safdie
Who? Yeah, I mean, it's. It's a movie about a dreamer. It's about a hardcore dreamer who's a dream that no one respects. And he's going to go to hell and back to try to pursue greatness.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. And do whatever he can.
Josh Safdie
So it's about a dreamer, you know, and table tennis, not ping pong, is really.
Jimmy Fallon
No, I was just seeing a few.
Josh Safdie
Yeah. Anything. Anything you can take seriously in life is worth pursuing from my point of view.
Jimmy Fallon
I love that.
Yeah.
You know what I love about this is the attention to detail. The streets in the fifties in New York City, the bowling alley. I felt like I was in the pet shop.
Josh Safdie
We had 100 live animals in that pet shop. Jack Fisk. Yeah, Jack Fisk, the production designer, was the greatest living production designer. I said to him, I want it to smell like a pet shop and I want it to sound like a pet shop. And you did. You felt. When you walked in, you felt like you were in a pet shop. And it was special. I mean, he. I said to Jack, when I wanted to do the film, I said, I want you to create a time machine. Because this is not a period film. It's a contemporary movie that I shot in 1952.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow.
Josh Safdie
That's the vibe of the movie.
Jimmy Fallon
I got to Work with Cameron Crowe on this movie. I did, a long time ago. And his attention to detail is everything. And everyone had a backstory, like you did with your actors. Everyone. Everyone had a backstory, knew what they were doing.
Josh Safdie
You had a backstory for your character. I love that.
Jimmy Fallon
Thank you.
Josh Safdie
That's an amazing film. Has everybody here seen Almost Famous? That's one of my favorite films. I actually skipped school to see that movie. The 11am showing. I went with my mom. She wanted to see it too. And we went and I saw it, and it's. I love Cameron Crowe. Of all of his work, going back to fast times and. And you're amazing in that film.
Jimmy Fallon
No, it's great. Thank you.
Josh Safdie
You're unbelievable. Actually, we have a picture here.
Jimmy Fallon
Picture here.
What?
Josh Safdie
Yeah, we have a picture here.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, that's me. Yeah, that's me in the movie.
Halle Berry
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Thank you very much. Yeah, I remember that. Yeah, that was great.
Josh Safdie
So the look, the costume, like, how did you and Cameron develop something like this? The look here.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. No, I just.
Josh Safdie
Did you did you. Were you in the. Were you in the wardrobe department picking out the.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, I was in there. I grew a beard and I grew my hair out, and it was.
Josh Safdie
So it was your decision to do the hair, not his?
Jimmy Fallon
No, he just told me, grow it out, and kind of went for it. Yeah. Went for that look.
Dylan O'Brien
And it was.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, it was interesting. Yeah, I loved it. It felt like it was in the 70s.
Dylan O'Brien
Ah.
Josh Safdie
I mean, there's. There's, you know, you're a music. You play music executive in the. In the movie.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Josh Safdie
And you're a musician, actually. Love. Idiot Boyfriend.
Jimmy Fallon
Thank you.
Josh Safdie
It's a great song. Great song. I appreciate it.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm an idiot.
Oh, yeah.
And I'm your boyfriend.
Yeah. Yeah. That's cool.
Josh Safdie
So you must have known a lot. Like, you were able to. You probably had a lot of horrible exchanges with music executives. So you were able to bring that to the role, right?
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I did. But we used that in the film to, you know, to kind of make it more real.
Josh Safdie
Yeah, exactly. I have to say. Without ruining the movie, right?
Jimmy Fallon
Without having.
Exactly.
Josh Safdie
Without ruining the movie, So.
Jimmy Fallon
Without ruining the movie.
That came out.
Josh Safdie
So. Without ruining the movie.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, it was so much fun.
Josh Safdie
Which is a great film. Towards the end of the movie, your guys are on a private plane.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, I am.
Josh Safdie
And everyone's kind of admitting to.
Dylan O'Brien
These.
Josh Safdie
Horrible things they've done in the past.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Yeah.
We didn't think we could pull it off.
Josh Safdie
And I imagine that wasn't a real private plane.
Jimmy Fallon
Right. Turns out you're right. It was not a real private plane. It was on a set and there was a gimbal there. And they actually had the cast leave so that I could record my lines because we were all laughing so.
Josh Safdie
Seriously.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. That's.
Wow. I was talking.
You give me that photo of me, please. We were talking about Marty Supreme. Talk about this guy right here, Timothy Chalamet. This is.
How did you.
Seriously, though, how did you.
Josh Safdie
Well, just like this, right? Just like this clip. Were these real glasses that you're wearing?
Jimmy Fallon
No.
Josh Safdie
Okay, so those are just kind of play glasses with no prescription in them? That is correct, yeah. So when Timmy and I first started talking about the character, we started talking about it in 2018ish, 2017. And I wanted the character to have an immediate kind of underdog vibe. And I wanted him to feel like when you saw him, you saw a life of impairment. You could feel his history immediately. All that character development, the fights on the streets, maybe the strange argument he had with someone because he lost in a table tennis hustle, and they nicked him on the chin with a knife. So there's a little keloid scar, by the way.
Jimmy Fallon
I understand that because I was like, I know Timothy pretty well, and does he have these scars in his chin?
Josh Safdie
Well, Gwyneth Paltrow said to me, we were shooting a scene, she turned to me and she said, no one ever talks about how bad his skin is. And I said, no, that's Kira Pachenko and Mike Fontaine, my amazing makeup department. Like, that's. They did that. He had five prosthetic pieces, and they wove in little hairs into his eyebrow to give him this beautiful unibrow, which is accented. But the eyeglasses, you know, I wanted to feel a life of impairment, especially for a sport that demands visual acuity. So I said to him early on, I said, and that's a pet peeve. I'm sorry. Like, we'll go back to this. It's a pet peeve that those are just look like costume glasses. The movie's amazing. Lots of movies that use, you know, non prescription glasses are still amazing. But what I said to Timmy was, what I want to do is I want to put plus 10 contact lenses in your eyes and then negative 6 prescription eyeglasses in front of them so that you can. Because you can feel that. You can sense that when the glasses fall off, you can't see the way it kind of the way it shrinks your eyes because the distance from The. From the glasses to the face refracted these. I sense these things. When you meet someone who's got bad vision, you can tell they got bad vision. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Timothy getting fit for contact lenses.
Josh Safdie
Timmy called me, and he said. He's like, so I'm at the optimal. Before I pitched it to him, I said, look, Timmy, I spoke to my ophthalmologist. He said, it's totally safe. He goes, it's annoying, but it's safe. And he's like, all right, fine. He went to an ophthalmologist, and he got fitted, and this is the. Actually minus 10. We ended up going to a minus six and a half. So where he felt comfortable. And he said to me, I said, how does it feel? He goes, I'm in a fishbowl right now. I'm fully in a fishbowl. And then I never thought about this, because I'm lucky to have good vision. You have good vision?
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Dylan O'Brien
Yeah.
Josh Safdie
No contacts in there?
Jimmy Fallon
No.
Okay.
Josh Safdie
I didn't realize that when you have glasses, they don't cover your entire field of vision, so you have a little bit of a fishbowl effect. And he. Everyone who wears glasses is probably like, yeah, I'm used to that. Welcome to my world.
Jimmy Fallon
But this is what I'm. This is the attention to detail that I'm talking about with Josh Safdie has. That is amazing that that goes into that film. It's a great film.
