And featuring the legendary Ruth her 21:19. And now, here he is, Jimmy Fowler. LA. Come on. That's great. Enjoy yourself, everybody.
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the tonight.
Thank you for watching.
Thanks for being here. Well, guys, the deadline for TikTok to find a US owner is almost here, and Amazon just made a last minute offer to buy the app. You know you're rich when you can make a $200 billion impulse buy. You know, like at 2:00am Jeff Bezos is like, and that's just $200 billion company to the cartoon. And I'm gonna get this waffle maker, too. Right now, Amazon's wondering if they should buy TikTok or just steal it off someone's front porch. Some big news from Washington. This afternoon, President Trump held an event at the White House to announce his new Liberation Day tariffs. Yeah. In his speech, Trump said, we'll make America wealthy again. Like it was at the start of my presidency. Six months. Yeah. Trump announced tariffs on aluminum, steel, and several other items that popped into his head mid speech. He also expanded the tariffs on aluminum to include canned beer. Even Kid Rock was like, what are we doing here, man? What's going on? The tariffs will raise prices for Americans, and costs could go up by $3,000 per year. Netflix was like, game recognized. Game. There you go. Trump announced his Liberation Day tariffs. He even mentioned why he would not impose tariffs on certain countries. But I think he might have been a little confused talking about them. I'll show you what I mean. First up, Trump said no tariffs for Chile. I love Chili's baby back ribs. Get me to God's country. Get me to God's country. Up next, he said, no tariffs for Lebanon. Lebanon, James is the greatest basketball player in the world. And finally, he said, no tariffs for Djibouti. I love Djibouti. And I'm making Kim Kardashian their ambassador.
Talking about Djibouti.
Stop it. Confused. Some folks are finding Trump's tariffs, which change almost daily, very hard to follow. One taxpayer said it's easier to follow a story made up by a caffeinated toddler. So to help everyone make sense of Trump's tariffs, we put together this educational video. Please enjoy.
Unknown
Hey, it's Liberation Day. So we're gonna learn about Trump's tariffs with a simple acronym and then a mnemonic device. Our acronym is tariff, of course. T A, R, I, F, F. So listen carefully, because tariff means tax applied to restrict imports from foreigners. T A, R, I, double F. That's tariff. You still with me?
Jimmy Fallon
Good.
Unknown
Cause I have a mnemonic device that'll make it easy to track the whole Trump tariff journey. Just follow the letters and it'll be simple. It started with 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods quickly suspended. Then 10% on Chinese imports. Announced denied, then reinstated. Extended to auto parts, half enforced. Canadian energy partially applied. Venezuelan oil buyers unexpectedly targeted. And a dollar for dollar reciprocity plan. Definition unclear. All leading to Liberation Day, after which everything will still be contingent upon his mood swing. So sing it with me. Everybody sing.
Jimmy Fallon
Hopefully, that helps. Hopefully that helps. Some more political news. Senator Cory Booker just delivered the longest speech in senate history at 25 hours and five minutes.
Whoa.
Michael B. Jordan
Yep.
Jimmy Fallon
The camera guy was like, goodness. As if being a cameraman for C SPAN isn't brutal enough. After his speech, Booker said he hadn't eaten since Friday and stopped drinking fluids on Sunday so he wouldn't have to go to the bathroom. Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders went to the bathroom three different times during this joke. That's right. Booker's 25 hour speech broke the record for the longest address from the Senate floor. Check out the other historically long speeches that knocked off the top of the list.
Unknown
Senator strom Thurmond in 1957. Your dad after he found weed in your sock drawer. Your co worker telling you about a dream they had last night. Adrian Brody accepting the Oscar for Best actor. Every group of bridesmaids whose speech starts with, for those of you who don't know us, we're Becca's best friends from growing up. Any person over 50, when you ask them for directions. Sam Rockwell describing what he does in Thailand on the White Lotus. The waiter reciting the specials when you already know you're just getting the burger. And Joe Biden saying one sentence.
Jimmy Fallon
There you go. That's it.
He knocked them all off the list. Now he holds the record. Well, hey, listen to this. Apparently, Trump told his cabinet that in the next few months, Elon Musk will leave the administration and go back to running his companies. Yeah, that's the equivalent of strongly hinting to a guest that you'd like them to leave. It's like, well, I'm getting pretty. It's getting pretty late. I think you should. Do you guys see this? Meghan Markle announced that her as ever product line sold out in under an hour. It's strange when you marry A prince. And you're the breadwinner of the family. Meghan was excited, while Prince Harry was like, what the hell am I going to do with 3,000 cases of wildflower honey? Hey, I read that to protest the Trump administration. A lot of Canadians are selling their winter homes in the U.S. i didn't know that was a thing. I guess in the winter, Canadians prefer the tropical climate of Buffalo. I heard about a woman in Pennsylvania who was looking for a jacket that she donated to charity after realizing she left a $2.5 million lottery ticket in the pocket. It's tough going back to a charity like, hey, I accidentally gave you money. And finally, a man was arrested for allegedly stealing eight Corvettes valued at more than $1 million. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to midlife crisis in prison.
We have a great show. Give it up for the Roots.
The Roots
Ladies.
Ryan Coogler
Don't get up. Yeah. Everybody get up. Get up. That's.
Jimmy Fallon
Welcome to the show, everybody.
We have two big stars to kick off tonight. The actor and the writer director of the new movie Sinners, Michael B. Jordan.
And Ryan Coogler are here tonight.
Michael B. Jordan's been here many times, but Ryan Coogler, this is his first time here. Ooh. Yeah. Very excited about that. Oh, plus, she's one of the best. She stars in the new series yous Friends and Neighbors, which premieres April 11 on Apple TV. Olivia Munn is joining us. His new. His new album. He's a Grammy winner. His new album, Sable fable is out April 11th.
Bon Iver is here. Stick around. We'll be right back with Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Uglass.
Ryan Coogler
Yeah. 21 pounds. We get down for it.
Jimmy Fallon
Our first guests are two of the.
Biggest names in Hollywood. They are the star and writer director of the new movie Sinners, which is in theaters and IMAX April 18th. Everyone, please welcome Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Hoogle.
Come on, you gotta love the energy. They love you. Come on.
That's what I'm talking about.
Love it. Michael.
Michael.
Welcome back.
Ryan Coogler. It's your first time here, so I want to make sure you're having a good time. Are you used to this applause?
Michael B. Jordan
No.
Jimmy Fallon
No.
Michael B. Jordan
I think that was for him.
Ryan Coogler
No, you too, man.
Jimmy Fallon
Let me give you some info on Ryan Coogler. By the way, your first movie, Fruitvale Station, won many awards, including top awards at Sundance. Then you made Creed a giant blockbuster.
Ryan Coogler
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Your next movie was Black Panther.
Come on. What are you talking about? What are you talking about?
That's the only Marvel movie to Be Oscar nominated for best picture.
Then you made Black Panther Wakanda forever. Ryan Coogler, welcome to the Tonight Show. Welcome.
Ryan Coogler
So happy.
Jimmy Fallon
I'm so happy that he's cracking me.
Ryan Coogler
Up because you hate compliments. So I love this.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, I love that. Perfect. Oh, I'm so sorry to embarrass you. All of these have something in common. Michael B. Jordan is in every one of these films. Is that, is that, is that the secret? Is that. I mean, what makes you want to work with Michael B. Jordan?
Michael B. Jordan
I mean, look at him, man.
Jimmy Fallon
I know.
Michael B. Jordan
He's an incredible performer, bro. And a consummate professional, you know, and when you. Filmmaking, bro, chemistry is important. I'm sure you worked with a lot of your crew for a long time.
Jimmy Fallon
Absolutely.
Michael B. Jordan
I seen my homies from Philly the Rouge here. I got a connection. And if you find a connection, you gotta keep that in an industry like ours.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. And you feel the same way, Mike.
Ryan Coogler
I mean, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, you know what I'm saying? But nah, man, we like minded, you know what I'm saying?
Jimmy Fallon
Do you have a shorthand on set?
Ryan Coogler
Yeah, it's kind of crazy. Sometimes we don't need to really talk. Talk too much, you know what I'm saying? Cause I kind of know exactly what he's looking for, what he needs, almost feel it. And yeah, it's just kind of like, you know, the cadence and rhythm of being on set and making movies and making scenes. And I kind of, you know, I'm always observing him and seeing what he. What is he anticipating? How can I make his job? How can I make his day easier? You know what I'm saying? How can I get ahead of it? Because usually we're behind on time, you know what I'm saying? We're trying to make our days, which is a tough thing to do in the film industry in general.
Jimmy Fallon
Stay on time, stay on budget.
Ryan Coogler
Yeah. And we're just always trying to, like, make things efficient and try to get better each day. So, yeah, we got a crazy show.
Jimmy Fallon
When Ryan calls you for a project, is it immediate? Yes?
Ryan Coogler
Pretty much. Yeah. It's like a yes.
And then.
All right, let me read it. And then I ended up reading it pretty quickly and be like, all right, cool, let's get to work. Let's do it right.
Jimmy Fallon
Is that how it happens in general?
Michael B. Jordan
You know, it's been different every time. Mike's gotten a lot more busy since we've gotten older, so I try to be cognizant of his time. And this time is a little bit different.
Ryan Coogler
Yeah, a little bit. I actually. I was calling him to pitch him a project and he was like, oh, man, that's cool, that's cool, that's cool. But, hey, I've been working on something. How about this?
Jimmy Fallon
Wow.
Ryan Coogler
Flipped it around, flipped it on me. And I was like, all right, this is pretty cool. Let's do this. Let's do this.
Jimmy Fallon
Did you even get to pitch your idea? A little bit. Yeah. Yeah, he got time. He got time.
Ryan Coogler
Nah, definitely. But he gave me some ideas and some pointers on that one, but that one's still in the tuck. We gonna get to that one. But, yeah, this one was the most important one and really, really personal for him. So I wanted to make sure I was available to Bill.
Jimmy Fallon
I remember last time you were on the show, you were telling me how great, what a mentor he was. So you're, like, helping you when you're directing. You asked him. I know you hate compliments, but I figured I'd throw one more in there.
Michael B. Jordan
About to get up out of here.
Jimmy Fallon
No. Sorry about that. I gotta say, I saw Sinners. It's unbelievable. I would suggest go see it in imax because it's just gorgeous and it's a big movie and it's really. I don't know how you did this. You know, I've seen it done before, but you play your twin brother. You play across opposite of yourself. But it's a new technology that actually looks like you're two different actors. It's very well done.
Ryan Coogler
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
How in that actor did you do that? How'd you do it?
Michael B. Jordan
We got a brilliant visual effects department man, Our head of vfx, Michael Rollin, and our VFX producer, James Alexander, that developed a lot of excellent technologies for us, man. But a lot of times it actually is Michael on the other side of him. We were feeling things twice using a technology called a techno dolly, where we'll do repeat passes. You have to act as one character and then go get changed. We'll find something else to cover. We couldn't move the camera. You know, we'll find something else with the other camera and he'll come back as another character. Can't move the camera now. You gotta keep it mounted where it's at.
Jimmy Fallon
You won't even believe it. It looks like there's two different acts, but it's both you. It's so well done, and you're doing one little different thing. Different. But I could tell you're twins. You're your brothers. And I'm like, wait, this is. I know it's hard to describe, but you actually brought a picture of one of the things that you're wearing. Is this the thing that you have to wear?
Ryan Coogler
It's called the Halo. You know what I'm saying?
Jimmy Fallon
This is not in the movie, by the way.
Ryan Coogler
They developed some new technology, some new cameras called the Halo that we use. And I'll do a pass with that as well, just to get all the facial features.
Jimmy Fallon
How do you even act with this thing on and act like it's not there?
Michael B. Jordan
He actually did a great job, man. Yeah, Mike, you could throw him into anything, man. He'll give it his all. But I was actually astonished he would put that on and then go through the whole scene. I'm trying to figure out which camera to stand behind to directing.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, but they're so nuanced and different. But this is the first project that you've done that's not been an existing ip. This is not Marvel. This is something that you really are behind and based on people you know, and your life experiences. How did you get into writing this?
Michael B. Jordan
Well, I had an uncle named Uncle James who passed away in 2015 when we were finishing up Creed. But he was kind of the eldest male member of my family, and he was born and raised in Mississippi, but then migrated to Oakland, where I'm from, when he was in his 20s. And whenever I would hang out with him, all he wanted to do was listen to blues music on vinyl, and I came to associate that music with him. And when he passed away, whenever I wanted to think about him, I'd find a blues track to play, and I would kind of conjure his spirit, you know, by listening to it. And so, you know, we were looking for a movie to do, you know, after Panther, I wanted to do something original. I wanted to do something only y'all can make. So I got into this as a love letter to him. And when I started to research it, I realized that there's an argument to be made that Delta blues music is America's most important contribution to global popular culture. That music is in everything that we listen to. It's in everything that we like today. And I realized that if I made it a genre film, you know, we can make the biggest movie possible for that art form. And that's what we did put in that music.
Jimmy Fallon
That music is great.
Ryan Coogler
Thanks.
Jimmy Fallon
Who is the kid that. The young kid?
Ryan Coogler
Miles Canton. Yeah. His voice is incredible. He has a great, like, regular Speaking voice. But when he sings, it just turns into something else.
Jimmy Fallon
There's a scene where he's playing in the car with you, and he's like a sly guitar. And he's playing on that national. Whatever that awesome guitar is. And he's like.
Ryan Coogler
And he learned how to play the guitar for this role like it was insane.
Jimmy Fallon
He starts singing. He starts singing in your face. You're like, yo, yo, yo. And I was like, yeah, that's how I'm feeling. Everyone in the theater was like, yeah, we're all feeling the same way. That kid can sing. But then I don't know how to describe the movie because it's not really that genre. It's not just like growing up in Delta and blues music. It becomes scary.
Ryan Coogler
Yeah, yeah. Little bit.
Jimmy Fallon
It's a vampire movie. No, it gets real scary. In the first two minutes is a jump scare where I'm like, I'm not gonna get. Oh, God.
Okay.
Oh, my God. You got me. First two minutes.
Ryan Coogler
I know you don't like scary movies.
Jimmy Fallon
I don't like scary movies.
Ryan Coogler
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
I don't like to be scared.
Michael B. Jordan
Sorry, bro.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, yeah. I'm glad you're apologizing to me. Cause I was apologizing to you.
Michael B. Jordan
Oh, no, no, no, no.
Jimmy Fallon
You scared me. And then it got scarier. The end. I mean, we all see it.
Yeah.
Ryan Coogler
But it gives you moments to laugh. You know what I'm saying? It's a huge musical component to it.
Jimmy Fallon
It's a great story, though, too.
Ryan Coogler
It's a family story, Brother story. You know, gangster story. You know what I mean?
Jimmy Fallon
Dude, it's full on gangster.
Justin Vernon
Yeah.
Michael B. Jordan
You wanted to make a full meal of a movie, bro. That's what we wanted. We wanted you to come out of the theater.
Jimmy Fallon
It feels like a real movie.
It's unbelievable.
And it feels exp. Yeah, yeah. That's why we want to go see a real movie. It's really great. And I want everyone to see it and laugh and love it and get scared and enjoy going with friends. You guys are doing something very cool. You got tickets for everyone in this audience to go see Sinners in theater.
Everybody here is going to go home and go see. We got a voucher on the way out. That's what I'm talking about. Michael B. Jordan, Ryan Coogler, Sinners will be in theaters and IMAX April 8th. Olivia Munn joins us after the break.
Stick around, everybody.
Yeah.
Ryan Coogler
White doves in my doorstep.
Jimmy Fallon
Our next guest is a very talented actress.
She stars in the new series, you Friends and Neighbors, which premieres April 11th on Apple TV. Please welcome Olivia Mug. It's so good to see you, Olivia. Thank you for coming back to the show and the family. I'm assuming everyone's good.
The Roots
Everyone's great.
Jimmy Fallon
The kids are super cute.
The Roots
Thank you so much.
Jimmy Fallon
I mean, beautiful baby. Congratulations, baby number two.
The Roots
I've seen you since six months old.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. Six months.
How cute.
The Roots
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
The Roots
Last time, John, you gave Malcolm the nicest gift. It was like this. Vintage Elvis Presley, still in packaging. It was like this.
Jimmy Fallon
How's Malcolm doing? Give him my regards, please, for that child. I love that baby. He's very cute and cool, and he was into Elvis. That was the last time I talked to John Mulaney. He was like, the baby's totally into Elvis.
The Roots
He loves Elvis. His 1960s special, he loves to sit and watch it. But now he's into. I know. The first time.
Jimmy Fallon
He's so cute.
He's so cute when he's.
The Roots
And the first thing he does, he watches what Elvis is doing. He goes to pick up his little guitar, and he sits down, he goes, it was so good. But now he's into more instruments. He recently asked for a trumpet, and he wanted a real trumpet, but he wants to play.
Jimmy Fallon
He wants to do his whole thing. One man band.
The Roots
Yeah. So I took a trumpet.
Jimmy Fallon
Wait, how old?
The Roots
He's three. But, no, he can't play it. I'm not one of those moms that's like. And my son, he plays a trumpet at three. No, he just wanted to trumpet.
Jimmy Fallon
He just.
The Roots
And I'm the idiot that was like, yeah, let's go get you a trumpet. So we go to the store, I get him a trumpet, but the guy teaches him how to blow in it, which is actually pretty hard. Right? It's not that easy to do.
Jimmy Fallon
No.
The Roots
And then he also wanted a snare drum, so I got that, too. And then.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, no, it's a terrible idea.
The Roots
I know. And John. I came back and I told John, I got him a snare drum. He goes, you got him a snare drum? And he goes, what were you thinking? I said, I wasn't thinking. I just got it for him.
Jimmy Fallon
It's allowed.
The Roots
So loud. And I told him he can only play it in the basement, in this one room in the corner.
Jimmy Fallon
Just take all the joy out of it. Yeah.
The Roots
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
That's so funny. Congratulations. You and John are officially married.
The Roots
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
That's great.
Thank you so much. How was the wedding? Everything good? So you had a small wedding, right?
The Roots
Very small wedding, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
And how Was the proposal. Did you.
The Roots
The proposal. You know, so you can tell me.
Jimmy Fallon
I won't tell anyone.
The Roots
All right, Well, I promise. My best friend, Karine. My best friend since I was 13 years old, she texts me and she says, hey, are you alone? And immediately I turn to John and say, oh, my God. Karine just asks if I'm alone. She wants to tell me something really interesting. I'm gonna go call her. So I immediately betray her by telling him that she wants to talk alone. And. And when I go in the other room and call her, she says, hey, so John called me. He doesn't want me to ask you directly, but is there anything that you want for your proposal? So. Yeah, well, in a. I'm freaking out, though. Cause I just. I just told him that she called me and she wants to fuck me. And I'm like, oh, no, now Kareem's gonna get in trouble.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. What are you talking about?
The Roots
But now I can't tell. No, but then also, I can't let Kareem know that I betrayed her trust immediately.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. That you were not alone.
Unknown
You were not alone.
Jimmy Fallon
In fact, you're with the person that this is about, this phone call.
The Roots
But I didn't know that.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God.
The Roots
And then. So then we talk about it. I said, I don't want anything big. I just. No friends or family. Just, like, very simple.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
The Roots
And I walk back out, and he says, so, what did Kareem want to talk about? And I am so panicked. And I said, she's having really bad trouble in her marriage. Yeah. And he goes, why? But we just saw her and Chris the other day. They were doing great. I go, yeah, it's. It's really, really bad. And he goes, well, what's going on? I says, they're not having sex. And he goes, what?
Jimmy Fallon
What is going on?
What are you doing?
The Roots
What do you mean? I go, it's been six months. He goes, six months? I go, yeah. He goes like, this is insane. I go, I know. And then after he proposes, he says to me, hey, I want you to know I know that whole thing about Karine and her sex life and all that was a lie. And I'm so embarrassed that I tripled down. And I go, no, no, no, it is true. And he was like, what? I go, I promise you it's true.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God.
The Roots
I know. This is how I'm starting off my marriage.
Jimmy Fallon
And you're doubling down.
The Roots
Yeah. And then he was like, oh, my gosh, this is crazy. I feel so bad for them. I'M like, I know. And eventually I just. The guilt just took over me. And I called Karine and I called John, and I was just like, you guys, I'm just. And I'm so sorry. And now I understand. You know, when people commit crimes, like, decades later, you know, after they'd gotten away with it, and you're like, why would you go turn yourself in? You're. You know, you're good.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. The guilt weighed on you too much.
The Roots
It was too much.
Jimmy Fallon
Did you go on a honeymoon? We.
The Roots
No, we didn't get to go on a honeymoon, but we did take a little parents trip away to this beautiful place in Utah. It was picturesque. It was, like, right up next to this mountain. It was so beautiful. And when we. When we got in, John surprised me, so I was like, this is amazing. It's so beautiful. And I took one of the little notes, you know, that they leave at the desk there, and I wrote, we hate it here, exclamation point, you know, as a little joke and just for him to see.
Jimmy Fallon
He'll look at it and be like, ha, ha ha. Yeah.
The Roots
And it sat there for three days. And then on the third day, John gets this email, and he says to me, like, hey, did you put a note in the hotel room? I said, yeah. He said, what did it say? It said, we hate it here. And he goes. I go, that was for you to see. And he goes, I never saw it. But the housekeeper saw it, and they've now taken it to the management, and you are trouble.
Jimmy Fallon
What is. Olivia, what are you doing?
The Roots
It's the cancer. It's my cancer. I went through cancer, and now I'm crazy.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my gosh.
That's so funny. So now they think you hate the hotel.
The Roots
Yeah. So then he.
Jimmy Fallon
But you did not hate the hotel.
The Roots
No, it was beautiful. And they sent a letter saying, hey, we got this note, and we can only assume it's for us. We're so sorry you hate it here.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my gosh.
The Roots
Is there anything we can do? And then I was like, oh, my God, John, please go explain to them that I am not funny. I so bad. I should never try to make a.
Jimmy Fallon
And we're in a sexless marriage. Yeah, just tell him and just say it, John.
The Roots
Kareem, get on the call.
Jimmy Fallon
Kareem, get in. Pretend you're me. Wear this wig.
The Roots
I don't know what's happening.
Jimmy Fallon
And I want to talk about your new show, your friends and neighbors. By the way, we had Amanda Pete on the show last night, and we showed A clip. And it got a giant laugh. You're crushing it. So congratulations.
The Roots
Thank you so much.
Jimmy Fallon
How do we set up the show? Your Friends and neighbors?
The Roots
So your Friends and neighbors is about like this, the top 1%, you know, the really wealthy people. And Jon Hamm's character is at the top of the world. He has all the money and power and then he loses it all. And his wife is having an affair with his best friend and he has lost his job, is no more money. And to keep up appearances, he starts stealing from his rich friends and neighbors. And my. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. And they don't know that he's unemployed.
The Roots
No, he's just stealing from all. Yeah. It's interesting because they kind of make a tropper. Makes a good point in the show. He's like, you know, these people are so wealthy and they have all these like really expensive, like watches and bags and it will take them a long time to realize when one is missing. And so that's kind of how John was like, okay, I'm gonna start, you know, stealing and pawning it off.
Jimmy Fallon
It's super interesting, super well acted, very funny. And it's already been renewed for a second season, so congratulations.
Another congratulations, your Friends and Neighbors premieres April 11th on Apple TV. We'll be right back with Bony Verse. Stick around, everybody.
Ryan Coogler
Employees of the year. Yes. I'm back to work. I took time off, but other rappers got jerks due to the fact they wack, so they track won't happen. The group back in stack, yo. They lack the ingredients. Greek cheese lack for that.
Jimmy Fallon
Our next guest is a multi platinum.
Grammy winning artist whose new album Sable fable is out April 11th. Please welcome Bony Bear.
Great to see you.
Great to see you. Justin Vernon. April 11th. The album is out. Are you excited?
Justin Vernon
I really am, actually.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. Yeah. I want to get into it and talk about everything, but first I want to bring up some other fun things. I. I've been seeing that you're a fan of WNBA and I love that you are.
Justin Vernon
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Deep. They put you up in the Jumbotron all the time. I don't know if you know this, but you're always up in the Jumbotron. Here you are. And. Yeah. Do you get pressure? Cause I feel like I have pressure when I'm on the Jumbotron.
Justin Vernon
I have no idea what to do.
Jimmy Fallon
A funny bit. Me neither.
Justin Vernon
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. What do you do?
Justin Vernon
I usually just hold up my beer, you know, and I'm also like, half the people in here definitely don't know who I am. And I'm getting a lot of, like, people, like, hitting me afterwards. Like, who are you? But I was at all the playoff games, all the finals games against your New York Liberty. Congratulations.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, sorry about that.
Justin Vernon
Well, I think we're starting a bit of a revenge tour this year. Our links coming for you.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, that's you. You want the links?
Justin Vernon
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
I was gonna tell you because every time I do the Jumbotron thing, I try to think of a bit or something to do if I'm at a Ranger game or a Nick game and do something funny or something like that, and I run out of things. So I went to the last Ranger game I went to, and they're gonna put me on the Jumbotron. I got there maybe 10 seconds before I was up on the screen. I go get me a hot dog and a beer. So I bring a hot dog and a beer. I was gonna dip it in the beer, like that guy. There's a guy, like, Yankee Stadium that dipped it in the beer. He got booed. So I was gonna do that and just get booed by everybody. And so they put me up at the Jumbotron, and I dip it in the beer, and they all start cheering. They don't boo. I think it's funny. So my buddy's next to me. Yeah. My buddy next to me goes, dude, they're cheery. Just eat the hot dog. So you go. So I'm doing this. I just house this hot dog, like Joey Chestnut. I go for it, dude. I'm like. I inhale it. They cheer even crazier, louder. So I go. And my buddy goes, you're still on the Jumbotron. So then I go, I'm just gonna chug this beer. Full beer. I just got there maybe 15 seconds. I chug this full beer. Beer's going down my sweater, all over the guy in front of me, everything. Everyone cheers. They go, great. I go, yeah. Or whatever. Then it finally gets off. The guy in front of me is John McEnroe.
Justin Vernon
Not the guy you want to drop.
Jimmy Fallon
Not the guy you want to drop here. He turns around, he goes, how much attention do you need? It's sad.
Justin Vernon
They always put you on too long.
Jimmy Fallon
Too long.
Justin Vernon
I was like, huh? And then you're like, now what do.
Jimmy Fallon
I. Yeah, I already did my bit. Yeah.
Justin Vernon
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
You're famously from Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Justin Vernon
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
Where you were born and raised. Yeah. And I'm very proud of you. Very proud of you there. Very proud of your career over there. But you brought us. We have a voicemail that you got from one of your neighbors. And, man, if this doesn't say everything to you, just about how close and how kind of small and fun it is over there. But they had heard your song on a TV show, Skinny Love, and they just wanted to call and let you know your song was on tv. Listen to this voice, man.
J
Hey, Justin. Hi. This is Brian, your neighbor. Just thought I'd let you know on the Voice tonight, there's a couple of girls singing Skinny Girl on there. Just thought I'd let you know if you're around. It's on the voice tonight, channel 13. Talk to you later. Have a good day.
Jimmy Fallon
Bye.
Yes.
We love you, Brian. Brian.
Justin Vernon
Brian is the best neighbor in the world. And his wife Mary immediately texts me. He's like, sorry, he got this name of the song wrong. He didn't mean to.
Jimmy Fallon
Like, Skinny Girl.
Justin Vernon
Skinny Girl. I mean, that's how my accent is when I'm back home or visiting around the campfire with Brian, too. But we love you, Brian.
Jimmy Fallon
I just love that he called you out just to let you know that your song was like, no, you're.
Justin Vernon
You've made something of yourself. You're not just a bunch of musicians running around the yard. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
And do you get to see Brian? I mean.
Justin Vernon
Oh, yeah. I mean, we. We do the. In Wisconsin. We do the One Finger Wave on the road or, you know, like, hey, there, neighbor. Yep. Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
I love it. You have a studio in Wisconsin, which.
Justin Vernon
Yeah, right next to Brian, where all.
Jimmy Fallon
Artists travel just to go to this studio. And you have your own albums that you've done there. But you've worked with Eminem. Taylor Swift, by the way. Taylor Swift, Obviously, we love her. But your songs with Taylor Swift, she just played it on the Eras tour, and all these kids are screaming your song and doing you. How does that make you feel?
Justin Vernon
Out of body. Out of body. I was like, you know, I sadly didn't ever get a chance to sing it with her on her tour. She got to come sing it with us. But. But I saw those clips, and I'm like, gosh, they sound better than one of me can sound. So. No, no, I mean, really, like, it was pretty powerful to just see that and to hear how that sounded is amazing.
Jimmy Fallon
I just love that you do those things and you try those things, and then it just ends up getting giant. You did a thing with Charli XCX on the Brat remix where you. Yeah, I love that you do that.
Why not?
But you. You involved making. You. Making a phone call to Bonnie Raitt Yeah.
Justin Vernon
So my friend Danielle Heim told me, oh, you should, you know, sample Nick of Time, the old Bonnie Raitt song. And I was like, that's such a good idea, because Charlie's song was a little bit about running out of time and et cetera. And so, you know, Bonnie and I have been friendly over the years, and she's my number one. My number one, our greatest living singer.
Jimmy Fallon
I think you came on her show and sang a medley of her song.
Justin Vernon
That was actually the first time I came and met you.
Jimmy Fallon
I'll never forget that.
Justin Vernon
When Phil did a little medley of.
Jimmy Fallon
It wasn't on any album or anything. You just go, I think, be fun to do.
Justin Vernon
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
I think you said, I want to bring back the medley to Late Night.
Justin Vernon
That sounds kind of cocky, but.
Jimmy Fallon
No, no, no. You go, let's bring back a medley. And I was like, no, I love that you did that. I'm like, you're singing songs that aren't even released. It's not on the album. You're like, I just love Bonnie Ray. I'm like, go for it, dude. And you did. But wait, so, I mean, so you call Bonnie Ray and what is.
Justin Vernon
She was like, yep. You know, like, really? Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
So y'all do it.
Justin Vernon
Let's do it. I mean, we just had to. She kind of just had to give us her blessing on using the sample, but she was, of course, touched, and she's a huge fan of Charlie's, as am I. So it was a cool. Really cool experience.
Jimmy Fallon
It's also fun to hang out with Bon Iver, Justin Vernon. You're like, I can call Bonnie Raitt. Yeah, I have her number. Yeah. I think that's pretty cool.
Justin Vernon
You have some cool numbers, I have to say. That is pretty cool.
Jimmy Fallon
Let's talk about the album.
Justin Vernon
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
This is Sable Fable. Sable Fable. I hope I'm holding up right. Is that right?
Justin Vernon
I think it works anyway. Yeah, it's got the.
Jimmy Fallon
That's it right there. Sorry, I got. Sorry, I held it up wrong. I apologize. What. What do we. You've been posting a lot of photos of you with salmon, by the way.
Justin Vernon
Yep.
Jimmy Fallon
Congratulations. That's so cool. I want to do one now, just. Just in honor of you. Let's do it. Is there any reason people are trying to look into the deep part? Does it have to do with Sable Fable, or is it just.
Justin Vernon
It's just salmon. It's my favorite color, you know, and it's just salmon.
Jimmy Fallon
It is a great color.
Justin Vernon
It's just a great color. And I. You Know, in order to tell people it's not pink, it's salmon, we started, you know, bringing actual fish with us everywhere just to let people.
Jimmy Fallon
Pink, it's salmon.
Justin Vernon
Yeah, exactly. Get it right.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, get it right. And what made you want to finish the. The album and make the. Cause you already released three.
Justin Vernon
Yeah, well, the ep. The first three songs that are technically part of Sable, that. They're a little thick, they're a little sad, a lot to digest.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. And this is the Sable part.
Justin Vernon
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
And this is the. This is the Fable part.
Justin Vernon
Yeah, yeah. One's kind of like the Hobbit and one' like Lord of the Rings.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Justin Vernon
Okay, I see that in length, but Sable's just a little, like, sad and hard to get through and kind of drudgy. And I look at the past, and Fable's all about being, why Sable?
Jimmy Fallon
What is.
Justin Vernon
It's like. It's the darkest black on earth, and it's like. It's just. I thought it was, and it rhymed with Fable, but I think it was a look back. It's kind of like this kind of cabin, man in a cabin narrative that I've been kind of absorbing over these years and stuff, accepting it in a way, but also, like, the rest of the record is sort of me kind of doing whatever I needed to do right now to be happy for once. Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
I'd love to see you happy. I love that. Because, honestly, you do a lot of beautiful songs, but they are heartbreaking. And you're like, oof. I mean, I put you on, you know, and just go, man, oh, man, that's just the most beautiful song ever. But you do want. I know the other side, where you're like, hey, I want to. Come on. Do a Bonnie Rape medley. Yeah, there is that side of you as well. So that's the fable part. It's finally out April 11th. So congratulations on this.
Justin Vernon
Thank you so much.
Jimmy Fallon
And thanks. Always good to see you. You're the best, buddy.
