Jimmy Fallon
Welcome, everybody. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Tonight Show. You are here. Thank you for watching. I appreciate it. It's going to be fun tonight. Well, first, guys, let's get some news. Today, President Trump called for Republicans in Congress to immediately defund NPR and pbs. It's not good. Right now. The White House has a group chat about invading sesame. Yeah, when NPR heard, they went nuts. They said, this is an outrage. We are furiously dying to turn on the show. Trump's playing a dangerous game. If PBS stops airing those old doo wop concerts, a bunch of 80 year olds are gonna storm the Capitol. That's what I'm telling him. Tell him it's gonna happen. It's gonna happen. You watch those shows. To be honest, I'm kind of shocked. Trump hates PBS because he goes to the same tanning salon as Ernie and Daniel Tiger. That's right. You would think that. Meanwhile, some more big news. Trump just announced a 25% tariff on all cars not made in the United States. So get ready for the new $80,000 Toyota Corolla. Here it is. Looks good. These tariffs are getting out of hand. Trump also announced a tariff on every girl doll that's not an American girl doll. I've always loved Molly. Issues. The new tariffs are likely to raise car prices. But Trump put out a message to reassure everyone about his plan. Take a look at this. Americans should buy American made cars like Ford and Tesla. Which is why I'm placing tariffs on all foreign carmakers such as Fat hyena, Toy Story, Mr. Beastie, Subway. Eat fresh lamb chop, Linguini. Bhumwah. Hoda. Don't we miss her? On today's show, we do. Millie, Bobby Brown. Can I even say this one on tv? Ferrero Rocher, Vampire Weekend, and of course, mozzarella. Interesting. You didn't get one right. He didn't get one correct. Mozzarella. Mr. Beast is what he said. Unbelievable. Get this, guys. Trump is now saying that the US will have a deal to save TikTok by the April 5 deadline. Though right now China's like, who needs to spy through TikTok when you leak everything in group chats?
Matt Bomer
We're good.
Jimmy Fallon
Of course, everyone's still talking about the White House's group chat scandal, but I saw that Trump said it's quote, really not a big deal. That's a relief. I mean, he said the same thing about COVID And no problems there. Meanwhile, whenever McDonald's takes away the McRib, Trump threatens to bomb Scotland. And Trump also said that he's not sure if the information shared on the group chat was classified. He was like, I have to compare it with the documents I have in the bathroom at Mar a Lago. Cause that I know for a facto, buddy boy, that is definitely. Hey, some more big news from Washington today. RFK Jr. Announced major cuts to the Department of Health and Human Services. And he shared his plans for a whole new organization. Watch this. We're going to eliminate an entire Alphabet soup of departments and agencies while preserving their core functions by merging them into a new organization called the Administration for a healthy America, or AHA. AHA. It makes sense because under RFK Jr. Laughter might be our best and only medicine. Yeah, that's right. He named the agency Aha. Next week, he's announcing his new department, Oingo Boingo. Finally, I saw that cans of Coca Cola have been recalled due to a potential plastic contamination today. Waiters said, is Pepsi okay? And people were like, nah, give me the plastic Coke. We have a great show. Give it up for the Roots. Everybody got a Coke about it. Even more beef. Better than all of your quest and all that sex. What a show. What a show we have for you tonight. He is one of the biggest. You can see him in two new films, Friendship, which is in select theaters May 9, and Death of a Unicorn, which is in theaters tomorrow. Paul Rudd is here tonight. Paul Rudd. Paul Rudd is here tonight. Paul Rudder's Internet. Put it up. He is also a Golden Globe winning actor who stars in the new comedy series Mid century modern. All 10 episodes are out tomorrow on Hulu. Matt Bomer is joining us. Our first guest is an Emmy nominated actor who is starring in two new films. Friendship is in select theaters May 9th. And you can see him opposite Jenna Ortega in Death of a Unicorn, which is in theaters Friday. Everyone please welcome Paul Rudd. I love you. Come on. Paul Rudd is in the house. Thank you. Thank you. Welcome back. Does that ever get old A little? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Paul Rudd
No, it doesn't. It's a great. It's very nice. Thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. We're so happy to have you. We love you. You're one of our favorite guests. And it was a big giant, giant news all around the world. Yesterday it was revealed that you were going to be in the new Avengers. Doomsday As Ant Man's coming back. Coming back.
Paul Rudd
Yeah. Yeah, I saw that. I saw that announcement.
Jimmy Fallon
They announced.
Paul Rudd
I did.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, I saw the announcement. The announcement was a live stream where they showed director's chairs with each actor's name on it. And here's your name, Ani. A smaller director's chair. Much, much smaller.
Paul Rudd
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, I guess. Cause you're.
Paul Rudd
Cause I'm Ant Man.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes.
Paul Rudd
I hope so.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Paul Rudd
I don't know. It's a. You know, I thought, oh, that's clever. Yes, I'm Ant Man. But there's still the part of you that's like a little. It's a little emasculating.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Paul Rudd
To have a little, tiny, tiny chair. But this is at least finally one that will actually fit me when I sit down.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. There's always so much secrecy around Marvel projects, obviously.
Paul Rudd
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
But is there anything that you can tell us about the new movie?
Paul Rudd
There is nothing that I can tell you. They are very secretive. It's really. It's important. Clearly, as we know, they never announce anything. This is, you know, it's a major movie. You can't be frivolous with this kind of stuff. It's nothing like military secrets or anything. This is a. This is a major motion picture.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. This is not something you put in a group chat.
Paul Rudd
It's like, this is definitely.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay, okay. All right. Okay. I'm sorry.
Paul Rudd
It's not like some sort of coordinated attack anywhere else.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay. I didn't think it was a big deal. Okay.
Paul Rudd
It's Marvel, Jimmy. I understand. Important.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes, it is a big deal.
Paul Rudd
So. No, there's not like I could tell you.
Jimmy Fallon
I figured that. I'm always happy to see you. We bumped into each other a few times since you've been on the show. Last one, we were both at Billy Joel's final concert at Madison Square Garden. That was amazing.
Paul Rudd
Incredible.
Jimmy Fallon
You know Billy Joel a little bit, right?
Paul Rudd
I mean, I don't really know him that well, but I have met him. I met him years ago. I've seen you, I think, maybe even at the first one at Madison Square Garden. Yeah, it's amazing.
Jimmy Fallon
He's one of the greatest concerts.
Paul Rudd
Before all of that started. I mean, I grew up a huge Billy Joel fan, as did there so many people. I mean, he's one of the greatest ever. And years ago, Adam Scott and I did a thing on Adult Swim. It was called the Greatest Event in Television, where we recreated sitcom openings. And we did the shot for. Shot the opening for Bosom Buddies and the theme to Bosom Buddies was My Life by Billy Joel.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, I love it. I don't care what you. Yeah, that's it. That's my jam.
Paul Rudd
That's the one. And. And so. But it wasn't in the show. It wasn't Billy Joel. Someone was singing his song. And so we thought this would be really funny. We did the recreation. There's about 10 minutes of a little documentary about it. And we thought, what if we could somehow incorporate Billy Joel into it? Maybe we could interview him and we could get him to do something this. He'd be excited that he's finally getting to record his own song.
Jimmy Fallon
You don't know Billy Joel.
Paul Rudd
Don't know him. So we're never met him. Nothing. But we somehow, through agents or whatever lawyers, they reached out and he said yes. And both Adam and I are fanatics. I mean, we were very nervous. He said, I'll give you an hour. And we had to. We went to the Hamptons, and there was a piano and a room. We had no plan. We didn't know what we were going to do. But he.
Jimmy Fallon
How was it?
Paul Rudd
He was so cool. But then he sat down and he started. We said, could you play this song? He was very excited. He says, yes, I'm happy. I'm going to finally get to do my song. And then he started playing. And as soon as he's playing, he started singing. We would interrupt him and say, can you do. Sound more like the guy from. From the show? And then we can say he's getting the words wrong. Every time he'd start to get into it, by the way. It felt awful. We were so excited to be sitting next to Billy Joel as he's playing. But we just kept do it like the singer that.
Jimmy Fallon
Pretending to be you.
Paul Rudd
That's not how it goes. It's like. I'm pretty sure it's how it goes. It's not. But anyway, he was so kind. He invited us to dinner afterward. Gave us more than an hour. And our wives and I, we went. And so we went to an Italian restaurant.
Jimmy Fallon
Wait, an Italian restaurant with Billy Joel?
Paul Rudd
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Come on.
Paul Rudd
Even said. He even said, you guys drink wine? What do you want? Red, White?
Jimmy Fallon
He did not.
Paul Rudd
Swear to God.
Jimmy Fallon
He did not.
Paul Rudd
And I mean, it's like he came in, he brought in clams. He had caught clams that day.
Jimmy Fallon
That sounds about right, though. He does stuff like that.
Paul Rudd
This was like clams and wine at an Italian restaurant with Billy Joel. It was one of the greatest nights of our lives. Couldn't believe it.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my gosh.
Paul Rudd
And so, as a result, I've now seen him since. At the concert. You know, like you. Like you. And I know you guys know each other, but it's just. It's overwhelming. I was like, 52nd street was, I think, maybe one of the very first albums I ever had. And it was because my life was my favorite song when as a kid.
Jimmy Fallon
He's the greatest.
Paul Rudd
And. And then to kind of fast forward and then that. It's. It's bizarre.
Jimmy Fallon
But then the last time we saw each other was SNL 50th, the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live.
Paul Rudd
Also an overwhelming experience. You were great.
Jimmy Fallon
You were great.
Paul Rudd
You were.
Jimmy Fallon
No, you were.
Paul Rudd
You were really.
Jimmy Fallon
You were great. I'm still out of breath from what I was doing.
Paul Rudd
I was out of breath, by the way, walking from that curtain to this chair. I'm not kidding.
Jimmy Fallon
You are the best. And I really appreciate, because I did get to see in the audience, as I was doing jokes and you were laughing, which I don't even know if you meant it, but you're just a good friend. I was like, I love you, dude. Love you, Paul Rudd.
Paul Rudd
You started that thing off.
Jimmy Fallon
You're always the best, buddy. But then, dude, snl, that concert was insane. The Roots were insane.
Paul Rudd
Yes. Well done, guys. That's true. I mean, that's insane. MVP's playing with everyone. That was awesome.
Jimmy Fallon
That's what I'm doing. I was saying to Quest, it's like doing, like, 30 different sketches. Like, you play with 30 totally different bands.
Paul Rudd
I know. Unreal. Unbelievable.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, but everyone knows that. And then the Sunday thing with every comedian, every celebrity you even know, and it's not an award show.
Paul Rudd
It's almost. It's actually even more surreal. And it's. To sit in that audience and you kind of look around and I get nervous. I mean.
Jimmy Fallon
You get nervous?
Paul Rudd
You. Yeah, I do. I mean, I'm still, like, just a. I don't feel any different than I really did growing up, where I'm just a fan of these people. I can grow up in this industry. I don't know how any of this works.
Jimmy Fallon
You feel like you're family, though, at this point. Everyone knows you.
Paul Rudd
It doesn't. You get a little more used to it, but you don't get totally used to it. I mean, I'd be curious about you. You really meet and know a ton of people. But, I mean, sitting in that audience, it's like you almost don't want to have eye contact with people. Cause it's like all of A sudden it's hi, and then I just sound. I feel like Chris Farley from the Chris Farley show, where just like, you're awesome. I was sitting in front of Keith Richards.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, he's the best.
Paul Rudd
First of all, that sounded terrible. I was sitting in front of Keith Richards.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, you had better seats.
Paul Rudd
No, no. He was sitting just to my side, and it was every single chair, and I'm like, oh, my God.
Jimmy Fallon
He's fun, right? So cool.
Paul Rudd
Yeah, he and his wife were. His wife is lovely. Yeah. The whole experience was just incredible.
Jimmy Fallon
I just love. I also love Jack Nicholson. Whenever I get to see him, he's the coolest and he's the nicest, and he's just the best.
Paul Rudd
Oh, my God.
Jimmy Fallon
But he laughs the way you think Jack Nicholson would laugh. Like, you tell a joke and he goes, ha, ha, ha, ha. And you go, wow. That's how you actually laugh.
Paul Rudd
I got to work with Jack Nicholson one time.
Jimmy Fallon
You did?
Paul Rudd
Jack Nicholson played my father in a movie. Good night, everyone.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God.
Paul Rudd
No, no, no.
Jimmy Fallon
Come back. No, come back. That's a good story. We love that.
Paul Rudd
He played my dad in a movie, and I had never met him, never seen him. I couldn't believe that I was going to meet him, see him in person, and we had to rehearse, and I was sitting in this chair. And the thing is that in the script, we play this father and son, and we always kiss each other. And I was nervous. I'm gonna meet him, and all of a sudden a car pulls up. I'm like, jack Nicholson is here. I'm gonna meet him in a second. And he came into the room, and he walked over to me and he grabbed me. Kiss on the lips. Here we go. Come on.
Jimmy Fallon
He's a pro. He's a pro. He's the best. You have two films coming out, Jimmy.
Paul Rudd
These are new mugs.
Jimmy Fallon
I did get new mugs. I forgot to warn you. I forgot to warn you. But you use it just like you like it's the old mug.
Paul Rudd
Look at you with the handle and sipping and everything. Yes, it works just. It works just the same.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. We didn't improve it or anything. We just. Yeah. It is new, though.
Paul Rudd
Why mess with perfection?
Jimmy Fallon
Thank you very much. It's also reversible, too, if you decide to be lefty. There you go.
Paul Rudd
Holy.
Jimmy Fallon
I just said, can't turn this off, man. Can't turn it off. Riff, let's talk about your movies. Just Jimmy Descorthen, right? It's just Donald.
Paul Rudd
Let's see what Happens. This crowd is crazy.
Jimmy Fallon
There's spring breakers now. I'm worried about these guys at all.
Paul Rudd
I could tell the way they were throwing you around. All those beach balls.
Jimmy Fallon
Changed my clothes.
Paul Rudd
Where's his wig?
Jimmy Fallon
I'm wearing it. I'm wearing it. It looks good. I'm wearing it. Thank you. Thank you. It's the best you can get on Amazon in short notice, so it's. But let's talk. We have two giant films. This is massive. First of all, friendship with Tim Robinson. Tim Robinson, Gosh, he's funny, man. Oh, my God.
Paul Rudd
Tim Robinson is one of the funniest people on the planet.
Jimmy Fallon
How'd you hook up with him and what's it about? What can we expect from that?
Paul Rudd
He plays a guy that doesn't really have many male friends or actually female friends. He has no friends.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Paul Rudd
Yeah. And so I move into. Onto the street, we meet, we hit it off with this, like, kind of like great couple of nights, hangout, and then not really sure whether or not maybe he's not that cool. I don't think so. Maybe we're gonna not be friends, maybe not be friends. But it's really about loneliness and how. I'll be honest with you, I don't know what it's about, but I will tell you this.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Paul Rudd
Thank you, Cliff. It's Tim Robinson.
Jimmy Fallon
Who?
Paul Rudd
I don't know if you've ever seen the show. I think you should leave.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. So if you've seen that show and.
Paul Rudd
You like that show and you've seen the Master and you mix those two together in some weird way, you've got that movie.
Jimmy Fallon
That's fantastic. Paul Rudd, welcome back. More tonight to everybody. It's fun. I brought the process. Brother disappeared. Our next guest is an Emmy nominated and Golden Globe winning actor starring in the new comedy series Mid Century Modern, which premieres all 10 episodes tomorrow on Hulu. Please welcome Matt Bomer. Matt Bomer, Matt Balmer. Welcome back.
Matt Bomer
And always the nicest crowd.
Jimmy Fallon
We love. Yeah, we do have some great crazy crowd. It's always great to see you. It's great to see you too. Since you were. Last time, we were talking about the show that you produced and starred in called Fellow Travelers.
Paul Rudd
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
And you got rave reviews for it after that. And then you won a Peabody Award.
Matt Bomer
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Congratulations, dude. That's massive. That's a real award.
Matt Bomer
I had been behind the project for years before it even made it to the air. So to have had that kind of a response was like more than a dream come true.
Jimmy Fallon
That's a Big deal, bud. Congratulations. Thanks. Thank you for coming back. I want to get into the new show that you're doing.
Paul Rudd
Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
But I also want to ask you about cold plunging and why and what's going on and. Yeah, what?
Matt Bomer
That's me and my friend Quackers.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, that's Quacker. Yeah. Your rubber ducky is there.
Matt Bomer
Who wants to be in freezing cold water alone? Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
What got you into this? Talk to us all about cold plunges.
Matt Bomer
I started following this guy, Wim Hof, who's basically like a Scandinavian caveman.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. No. Yes. Yes, I know. Yes. I've seen this guy's.
Matt Bomer
We all got a little crazy during the pandemic. Yes.
Jimmy Fallon
That's when he saw him, too.
Paul Rudd
Yeah.
Matt Bomer
And so I started doing the cold showers, and then I had. I actually had, like, a cattle trough in my backyard that I repurposed as a cold plunge. And then that got real mossy and funky. And then I just went all in and got the full plunge.
Jimmy Fallon
You got the real plunge. Now, how cold is it? How long do you stay in it? And do you, like, have to breathe a special way?
Matt Bomer
Like, I try.
Jimmy Fallon
Like, that's what he does. Right? You go, that's exactly that.
Matt Bomer
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm kind of a wimp, honestly. I have it at the highest setting, which is 50 degrees, which is still pretty cold.
Jimmy Fallon
It's freezing.
Matt Bomer
But I have friends who do it at, like, 35. But, yeah, I do a little breathing. I hang with my rubber ducky.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah. And how long do you guys hang in the ceiling?
Matt Bomer
I do about three minutes.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay. It's not bad. I think I could do three minutes.
Paul Rudd
Yeah.
Matt Bomer
I just sing a song to myself or, you know, try not to black out.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But what does it do for you? I mean, and what time of the day do you.
Matt Bomer
Do I have to do it in the morning? I get the biggest endorphin rush. I feel so good. I feel like it's helped with my immune system. Maybe that's just what I tell myself.
Jimmy Fallon
Like, since you've done this, you've not been sick.
Matt Bomer
Yeah, I feel like I've been sick less, I would say. But more importantly, I just get. I just feel good all day long.
Jimmy Fallon
Wow. Yeah. All right, I'm gonna do this.
Matt Bomer
I think if you almost die, your body's like, hey, you should appreciate life more.
Jimmy Fallon
Skydive.
Matt Bomer
Skydive or cold plunge, as always, consult your doctor before you.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, that's a very responsible man. Thank you very much for doing that. That is true.
Matt Bomer
Just saying.
Jimmy Fallon
Just saying. Let's talk about your new series, Mid Century Modern. Yes. By the way. Gosh, it's so funny. It's fantastic. But I also. You're getting back into the TV thing because White Collar was a big deal.
Matt Bomer
Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
And it was six seasons.
Matt Bomer
Six seasons here in New York City, baby.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah, I know. That was a good show and I love. And a good premise. Yeah. Would you ever think of maybe reuniting or bringing the show back?
Matt Bomer
I do it in a heartbeat. It was my first television family. You know, like SNL was your first television family. I'm still good friends with all of them. We have dinner. We're on a text chain together.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, I would love to see that.
Matt Bomer
Yeah. So to get to work with them on anything.
Jimmy Fallon
No, not the text chain. I'll tell you, trust me, I already on the text and already right now. Okay. Yeah, yeah, it's going all right.
Matt Bomer
Everyone's spying on us.
Jimmy Fallon
Everyone's on it.
Matt Bomer
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I would love to, you know, but you know, those decisions are kind of above my pay grade as to whether or not.
Jimmy Fallon
No, but come on. All right, White Collar, guys, come on, let's get out of this. Let's bring it back. I'd love to see it.
Matt Bomer
Me too.
Jimmy Fallon
But now, Mid Century Modern, this is all out funny. It's the team that brought you Willing Grace. Yes, it's. Yeah.
Matt Bomer
Jimmy Burrows directed.
Paul Rudd
James Burrows.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh, my God. Legend.
Matt Bomer
He directed Cheers all the way back to Mary Tyler Moore. Every episode of Friends, every episode of Will and Grace Frasier.
Jimmy Fallon
He's the best to ever do icon, James. Yeah. And also, and one of our all time fa, Nathan Lane is in the show. He's our faith.
Matt Bomer
Nathan Lane.
Jimmy Fallon
Please give it my best.
Matt Bomer
Nathan Lee Graham, the late, great Linda Lavin. So many iconic guest stars.
Jimmy Fallon
I can't believe Adlon Linda Lavin. You got to work with her. Yeah. I mean, what was she like?
Matt Bomer
I mean, just the best.
Jimmy Fallon
She was talking about a legend.
Matt Bomer
Such a legend. She was a master of that medium. So generous of spirit and sharing her wisdom with me. Well, I've been a huge fan. I'd seen her on Broadway, you know, and obviously grew up watching reruns of Alice.
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Matt Bomer
So, yeah.
Jimmy Fallon
Okay. Right.
Matt Bomer
And so to be in scenes with her was just so sweet, but she was so loving and gracious. And when we broke for the holidays, we just had the most beautiful conversation you could ever hope to have where I got to finally fan out on her and tell her everything I loved about her. And the last thing we said to each Other was I love you. So I'm really grateful for that memory.
Jimmy Fallon
I know you did a special episode, too, which is dedicated to her and her memory. That was beautiful. I'm happy you guys did that, but I love to watch.
Matt Bomer
Can I give Nathan Lane some flowers?
Jimmy Fallon
Yeah.
Matt Bomer
Nathan Lane is like. I mean, I was a pre birdcage Nathan Lane fan.
Jimmy Fallon
Oh.
Matt Bomer
Because I was a drama nerd, you know? So I was in my little drama club library reading all the different plays, and every time there was a picture of the cast, it was like Nathan Lane was in it. I was like, who is this person who is American theater?
Jimmy Fallon
And he's just.
Matt Bomer
To get to work with him, he's just a dream come true. He's just.
Jimmy Fallon
He nails everything he does.
Matt Bomer
He's so hilarious.
Jimmy Fallon
He's so good.
Matt Bomer
He's so gracious. He's so kind and humble.
Jimmy Fallon
He was funny. I mean, murders in the Building was fantastic. Yes.
Matt Bomer
And before every episode, we're, like, all holding hands behind a curtain, like, nervous to go on, and I'm like, I can't believe I'm having this moment with Nathan Lane every week.
Jimmy Fallon
Good. How do we set up Mid Century Modern? What is it about and who do you play?
Matt Bomer
Mid Century Modern is about found family. It's about a group of friends who are reunited over the death of one of their best friends and decide to cohabitate together and all the ups and downs that come with that. But really, it's about, you know, celebrating and loving your friends for their most authentic selves, which I think is what we all want in this world. Of course. And thank you.
Jimmy Fallon
You gotta celebrate your friends.
Paul Rudd
Yeah.
Matt Bomer
And it's about joy. We all need a little joy.
Jimmy Fallon
Yes. We need some laughter and joy. Come on. That's what I'm talking. Tom Hulu, Matt Bomer, everybody. Mid Century Modern premieres all 10 episodes tomorrow on Hulu.
