Last night, 33 year old Senate assemblyman Zoran Mamdani pulled off a huge upset and is now the favorite to win the general election. Check out what some former mayors said after his big win. First, Mike Bloomberg said, I wish you the best, Mr. Mamdani. Becoming mayor was the greatest honor of my life. That's nice. Next, Bill de Blasio said, we're all rooting for you. There's nothing like being mayor of New York. Then Rudy Giuliani said, yo, kids, can I borrow 20 bucks? Then next, Mike Bloomberg said, running the city is challenging, but also rewarding. Then Rudy Giuliani said, forget the 20 bucks. Can I sleep in your car? Not, not for long. Just for like six or seven months. And de Blasio said, I look forward to watching his campaign. That's going all over the place. When you saw that trailer, did it go back to you? Oh, yeah, I remember we filmed that.

Yeah. It sort of teleports you back. There's so much that I didn't see because the girls, their extraordinary work and John Chu, the director. It was the. Yeah. I mean, I'm a massive fan of Wicked anyway, but like you, I got to see so much stuff that. The first time.

And it is enchanting.

Yeah, I mean, I saw something, but I don't know if you want to give a spoiler, can we. But it looked like there might be a wedding.

I don't want to get you in any trouble. I want to talk to you about Jurassic World. Rebirth. Man, oh, man, is this a great film. This is such a good movie. It is so fun. It is frightening and terrifying in the best way. It's just so well done and it's got that kind of summer blockbuster, Spielberg y type of vibe.

There's a lot of love on screen. There's so many Easter eggs and homages to all the films we loved growing up.

[Jimmy Faux]

Yeah.

[Abby Elliott]

Beyond Jaws, it's like Gremlins and the Goonies. It's a big adventure and I couldn't be prouder to be a part of it.

[Jimmy Faux]

Last time you were on the show, I think you were saying, we announced. We announced that we were going on to do.

[Abby Elliott]

Which was 14 months ago. It's amazing what can happen just every year.

[Jimmy Faux]

Home run. Well, you hit a homer in great.

[Abby Elliott]

Company with Mahershala Ali and Scarlett Johansson.

[Jimmy Faux]

Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Scarlett Johansson. Come on. Yeah. It's the best. Is it everything you could have imagined it would have been?

[Abby Elliott]

Yeah, everything and more. Everything and more. And I feel really. Yeah, it's. We were filming in these extraordinary locations in Thailand, Malta and London. And there were sequences that just felt so. I sort of developed a verb to Spielberg.

[Jimmy Faux]

Oh.

[Abby Elliott]

Because the only way you can sort of describe the experience of shooting on a gimbal on a. We were in Malta on a. On a boat. And the boat was flipping and there was water cannons flying and flips and we like. The action sequence is a knockout, but it's. It just. The only way to describe it is to Spielberg. We. Spielberg for a few months.

[Jimmy Faux]

Yeah. Because we're Spielberging right now. We're full on Spielberg.

[Abby Elliott]

Is that your Spielberging face?

[Jimmy Faux]

Yeah, that's it. That's what I would do. I would freak out. Yeah. I mean, not only do you star in the film, but this is. I saw this and that. This was very cool. You also helped part score the film as well.

[Abby Elliott]

Yeah, this really was a highlight of my career. Yeah.

[Jimmy Faux]

Nerding out about this.

[Abby Elliott]

I love this is the nerd in me sort of erupted like Vesuvius. But I was, I was doing a play, I was doing a production of Richard ii. So I was playing Shakespeare every night. And I'm sure you've done theater. You sort of go completely cuckoo trying to sustain the performance. And. And I was doing adr and Gareth Edwards, extraordinary director, was saying, we're going to be recording Alexandra Despatch new original score for the Jurassic, which will include the John Williams theme next week. So I was like, brilliant. I'm going to go over to Abbey Road Studios. And he let me in and I sat with my mate at the top.

[Jimmy Faux]

And we said, can I just go watch?

[Abby Elliott]

Just to watch, Just to, you know, I'd got goosebumps. 105 piece world class orchestra. Conrad, the original orchestrator who worked with John Williams was there. The original score was in his hands. And as the week progressed, I came back and I was like, I could. Can I bring my clarinet? Because I played the clarinet at school. I told you it was a nerdy story. And on the Friday they said, look, you can come. And I just wanted to play one, like, just. Even if it was like one slightly sharp note John Williams score, it would have been my dream come true. And I came and I ended up playing the clarinet with an amazing. With John and Caris, who were the clarinetists. And I played on the John Williams score and I stayed there. And Alexander Desplat, amazing composer, was like, hey, you can play. You stay, you stay. So I stayed in the session and then. And we were playing all the cues that were coming up. Extraordinary music. Like his score is amazing. And then a clarinet solo came up and he said, come on, you're gonna play. And I was like. And obviously world class musicians. I was like, I can't do. I'm not gonna. I said I couldn't do it. And I said no. And I sat there as this clarinet solo played and I was like, I'm gonna regret that for the rest of my life. And I just sort of sat there, carry on. And you know, I played the odd note here and there and then Again, a clarinet solo came up, and he said, it's now or never. And I just went, okay, let's do it. And I ended up playing the theme of Dr. Henry Loomis, the character I play in a Jurassic park film, on the clarinet, which is in the score.

[Jimmy Fallon]

It's the greatest story ever.

[Abby Elliott]

But, you know, in 1993, Jurassic park came out. It was a formative experience for all of us. That's why we loved that film and the franchise so much. And the same year, I got given a plastic clarinet by my granddad, who I think won it in a. In a. In a pub.

[Jimmy Faux]

Yeah. In a pub.

[Abby Elliott]

And I started playing then. And you just. It just shows that, you know, if you find something you love and you commit to it, you never know how it comes full circle. But honestly, it was like. It was so emotional. Yeah. I mean, there's just certain things that happen that you couldn't possibly even imagine. But. Yeah.

[Jimmy Faux]

Another thing that's going around is the glasses that your character wears.

[Abby Elliott]

Yes.

[Jimmy Faux]

In the film is going all over. The movie's not even out yet, but it's become an Internet sensation.

[Abby Elliott]

You know, this is Blakely Thornton, who's come up with this.

So. So. So everyone's. What are they saying about your glasses? They're.

[Abby Elliott]

They're saying they are slutty. Slutty, yeah.

[Jimmy Faux]

Glasses. Yes. And I just think that's hilarious. That's. That's. That's how they're describing your glasses. But were.

You see the film and you see Dr. Henry was. It always would be so proud to be called slutty.

[Jimmy Faux]

Your character look.

[Abby Elliott]

Yeah. When we had the first costume fitting, you know, this in. In the franchise and also in all the Spielberg films, the characters have such specific costumes. And so, yeah, at one point, he had a big old beard. I grew my hair. I have a long hair. So the first thing to go was to cut. I cut my hair, and then I found a fisherman's hat, which I really liked. I have a really big beard, and I chose these glasses, and they're made by cubitts. I'd worn cubits for 10 years, so that's always good. And then I was like, it's a nod to Dreyfus, which is Dreyfus in Jaws. That was the idea.

[Jimmy Faux]

Oh, really?

[Abby Elliott]

I lost the fisherman's hat. The beard had to go, but the glasses stayed. And here we are.

[Jimmy Faux]

Shout out to Richard Dreyfuss. That's really good.

[Abby Elliott]

If Richard Dreyfus knew that. The butterfly effect.

But then. But then talk to me. About the Shameless Fund. This is a charity that you're involved in. Tell me about this.

That was so cool. It was just the sea of, like every celebrity and everybody that's been on the show and just, you know, every talented, creative person that you love. And all of a sudden it was Tom Hanks. And then Paul McCartney was like in my face saying hello. And I introduced myself to him and I was like, I'm Abby. I didn't personally work with him. He was a musical guest, I think, when I was there, but I didn't meet him then. And so I met him on stage that night and I was like, I'm Abby. I was a cast member a long, long time ago. And he was like, well, couldn't have been like that long ago, right?

Yeah, of course.

But, yeah. And then a joint was passed around, like at that. At that moment, really on the stage. Yeah. And so I wasn't in that section. Yeah.

And yeah, I had been pregnant season two, and I kind of brought my pregnancy to them and I was nervous about how it would turn out. And then they wrote this incredible birthing scene. And so between Seasons two and three, I gave birth to my son, and I knew that I was gonna get to do this, and so I knew it was with my fake mother on the show Jamie, Donna. And so I had my mom in my birthing, in my labor room, and she was filming my contractions so I could go back and watch my contractions to try and emulate them.

You were a vested actor. Oh, my gosh. I mean, wow.

[Jonathan Bailey]

What I didn't realize was that she would film the entire birth.

I mean, for my character, Sugar's a new mom, so she's navigating motherhood and, you know, working at the restaurant, which is, you know, the thing that all new moms, working moms have to have to deal with is how do I give 100% to both?

And then at the restaurant, you know, the clock is ticking. Some stakes are higher, and the crew has to kind of adapt and navigate to some new challenges.

Yeah. Do people. When you go to a restaurant now, do people just shout you out and be like, oh, my gosh, I get.

Yeah. At restaurants especially, because they kind of feel like I work there.

This is the biggest thing and the freshest news, by the way, because just yesterday you announced the Boy is Mine tour. And this is. It's happening. Tickets go on sale Ticketmaster this Friday. But let's talk about this. How long has this been on your mind to do this, this idea of the tour?

[Monica]

Shall I say it?

[Jimmy Faux]

Yeah.

[Monica]

27 years.

[Jimmy Faux]

27 years. 27 years in the making. And now it's finally here.

[Monica]

Yes. It's divine timing.

[Jimmy Faux]

Now it's perfect timing. Everyone's going nuts. The tour is named after your legendary duet, the Boy is Mine, which was released in 1998. Okay, let's go. Let's go back to the beginning for a minute. Brandi, is it true you got the idea for this song from watching a Jerry Springer episode?

[Monica]

Yes, I was a huge Jerry Springer.

[Jimmy Faux]

F it true. Me too.

[Monica]

One of the topics was the Boy is Mine, and I'm like, oh, my God. Song idea. Let's do this.

[Jimmy Faux]

And when did you two meet? Did you know each other before you recorded?

[Monica]

Well, I was always a fan of hers, and I wanted to work with her, so I called her up and asked her to be a part of the song, and she said yes. And here we are.

[Jimmy Faux]

And that's the way you remember it as well.

[Brandi]

Well, that's exactly how it happened. She was working with Rodney Jerkins and LaShawn Daniels, and they were all putting together some incredible music. And when I first heard the song, I'm like, but people are gonna think we're fighting, right? And people still think we're fighting.

[The Roots]

Hear that?

[Jimmy Faux]

That's really funny.

[Monica]

So I don't know if it's the.

[Brandi]

Greatness of the song or something else, but it did just start something completely different. And so for us, but there is no fighting.

[Jimmy Faux]

This is a love affair. You guys love each other.

[Monica]

Yes.

[Brandi]

We're a musical marriage.

[Jimmy Faux]

Yes, exactly. You're right. Yeah.

[Brandi]

Yeah. It is a musical.

Thank you. The Boy is Mine comes out, ended up being number one for 13 straight weeks. Biggest hit ever. Could you even imagine that much success when you were recording it?

[Monica]

Absolutely not. I mean, who knew? 13 weeks is a long.

[Jimmy Faux]

It's a long time time.

[Monica]

And you didn't know that when you're creating it. Like, you hope for that, but here's.

[Jimmy Faux]

You guys winning the Grammy for it. By the way, were you excited about. Yeah.

[Brandi]

Oh, so excited.

[Monica]

I actually ran to the stage.

[Jimmy Faux]

You ran to.

[Monica]

Yes. My composure was completely gone and called me.

[Brandi]

And here's the thing. She leaves me because I have on these heels and I have on Chanel Runway, and it's flowing, so I'm tiptoeing slowly behind.

[Jimmy Fallon]

Of course.

[Jimmy Faux]

Of course.

[Brandi]

And then when I get up there, she's like, sorry, girl, we just want a Grammy.

[Jimmy Faux]

I'm.

[Abby Elliott]

The Grammys.

[Monica]

Yes.

[Brandi]

Grammys.

[Jimmy Faux]

It's the Grammys. You got to get up there. It's got to get exciting. I mean, come on. That's one in a zillion right there. And then cut to 25 years later, you get a call from Ariana Grande, who says that, can I do a remix of a song called the Boy Is Mine.

[Monica]

Boy Is Mine reuniting us. She did.

[Brandi]

Yes, she did. I think it was how personable that she was that made us feel so comfortable because we've been very adamant. Just leave history as it is.

[Jimmy Faux]

Yeah. Don't mess with it.

[Brandi]

Don't mess with it. But she. Right. But it's like the integrity of it was still there. And the fact that she was consistently. My daughter Leah is only 11, and we've been watching her on Victorious for a long time. So when she FaceTimed me, she's like, mom. Mom.

[Jimmy Faux]

Oh, my God.

[Brandi]

Mom. And. And I. I was like, yeah. I mean, you know, she calls me all the time. So.

[Jimmy Faux]

Someone that really inspired you both was Whitney Houston. And I. I couldn't help but think about Whitney and what she would think. I know what she would think about everything you're doing today. What do you think she would be.

[Monica]

I think she would be very, very proud of us.

[Brandi]

She would be sarcastic finally.

[Monica]

Yes, but.

[Jimmy Faux]

Right, Finally.

[Brandi]

But she'd be very ecstatic for us because when she would see us together, it was something special. And we had a chance to really share moments with her together. We were about to do a tribute, Right. And so we are all on borrowed time. You never know what may happen. And we didn't know that that would be our last time seeing her. So it allowed us to share. We have a lot of special moments that just continue to go on and on. But her influence is all over us. Far beyond music. The love unmatched. The love.

[Jimmy Faux]

That's fantastic. I gotta say, I gotta ask. Cause everyone's talking. Could this mean you guys would record some new music together?

[Monica]

I think it opens the door for sure. It does you down, Monica.

[Jimmy Faux]

I mean, what do you think? Brandi, Monica, what do you. Right.

[Brandi]

We need to.

[Jimmy Faux]

You're gonna be on tour, right? You get a little studio tour bus going with you guys?

[Brandi]

Oh, no, now we're not doing the studio tour bus. Yeah, the studio tour bus. Listen, we're seasoned women.

We need proper rest.

We're going to 24 cities. So what we're gonna do is just be smart about it. We'll start working on some music immediately.
