Good morning, friend. It's Monday again. It's today and it is a new week and we're ready to win the week. We're going to win Monday by meeting with Jesus this morning in the word of God. It's May 18th in the year of our Lord 2026. I'm John David Wal and this is your wake up call. Let's begin this week in consecration. Just locate yourself. We're together now. Many people are joining us all over the place and we're actually shifting from being in so many places on the earth to being seated in the heavens. That's what Ephesians tells us. I picture it like we all have chairs and it's, it's amazing how those chairs are all gathered around Jesus and one of those chairs has got our name on it. And we're going to take a seat there just this morning and we're going to meet with Jesus. So let me begin by saying, wake up sleeper. Rise from the dead and Christ will shine on you. Jesus, I belong to you. I lift up my heart to you. I set my mind on you. I fix my eyes on you. I offer my body to you as a living sacrifice. Jesus, we belong to you. And we're praying in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Today's entry we're continuing in this spiritual warfare mode. Ephesians. Ephesians chapter six brings us. The entry is entitled One Little Word Shall Fail him. And our text is Ephesians chapter 6, verses 18 through 20. Hear now the word of the Lord and pray in the spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people. Pray also for me that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly as I should, the word of the Lord. Now consider this. About 30 some years ago, someone put a book in my hand that opened my eyes to a reality I had no idea of. The book by Frank Peretti was entitled this Present Darkness. The novel told the story of a sensational yet unseen battle in the heavenly realms between angels and demons. Playing out behind the scenes of the visible world. The success of the angels rose and fell on the fervency of the prayers of people. The book profoundly changed my understanding of prayer and my motivation to pray. I remain grateful for the book and its wake up call. In my life and faith. However, I do see its flaws in retrospect. In my remembrance, the book put far too much stock in human agency, as though our failure to pray could put the overall outcome in jeopardy. The book also made it seem like the battle between God and Satan was somehow an even match or a fair fight. In matters of spiritual warfare, I want to make two points very clear. First, we, you and me, are no match for Satan. Second, Satan is no match for Jesus. On both counts, the match is not even close. I do love the great fight song of the Reformation. A mighty fortress is our God. We sang it yesterday. Martin Luther's prophetic verse offers a veritable primer on spiritual warfare. My favorite turns of phrase phrase come in the second half of the third stanza. I'll sing it the Prince of Darkness

What we need is not more armor, but more Jesus. The technical term is Christus Victor. The apostle John captured it with these words. You are from God, little children, and have overcome them, because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4. That's one to remember. As given this assurance, we can take up the great strategy Paul offers us in our present text and pray in the Spirit on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers and requests. What does this mean, to pray in the Spirit? I suspect it means at least several things. For starters, ask the Holy Spirit to lead you in prayer over particular situations and people. Ask the Spirit to give you words, scripture texts, images and pictures to inform and guide your prayers. Ask the Spirit to give you words of prophecy, knowledge and wisdom to embolden your prayers and to be shared with others. As I wrote this entry, I sensed the Spirit calling me to pray for a dear friend of mine who is in early recovery from a complex surgery. I asked the Lord to help me pray in the Spirit for him. As I began to pray, the words he needs water came into my mind. I began to lift those words in prayer that my friend would be flooded with living water. From there, I sensed the breaking of a dam and the rushing forward of a powerful river of life. I was led to pray into the visionary text from Ezekiel 47, river of God bring life to dead places. I gave myself to several minutes of this kind of praying. I had no idea how it might connect or not to my friend and his circumstance. I did not need to know. I simply went with the impulse of it. Now, here's the Interesting part. After being released from the hospital, my friend came across today's entry as he was catching up on the wake up call entries he missed while in the hospital. He sent me the following text message. He says we're catching up on the wake up call. This morning you said you felt led to pray Ezekiel Living Waters to a friend who had surgery. If that was me, you were right in your discernment. My saline level had dropped on Thursday, causing the doctor to ration fluids so that my saline percent would rise. The deprivation of water caused my pulse to drop to zero on Friday afternoon, causing my relocation to the primary care unit. The prayers of faithful friends availeth much. Thank you Though I am still in the shallow end of the pool On Praying in the Spirit on All Occasions with all Kinds of Prayers I have a deep sense of knowing that this kind of praying plays a very important role in the way God works in the everyday world. The key to praying in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests is being available to the Spirit and ready to roll on a moment's notice. The best way to learn is by praying with others who pray in these kinds of ways. We must learn to trust the instincts of our imagination, be experimental in our willingness to go with leadings and promptings and stop trying to censor whether we are in our head or in the Spirit. The Greek word for the English word disciple is mathetes. It means a learner. There is significant foundational knowledge we need to thrive as followers of Jesus. But discipleship means taking learning to the next level and putting it into practice. We can read books about spiritual warfare. Discipleship requires putting it into play. Discipleship requires we learn about the full armor of God by putting it on every day it requires. We learn to pray by growing in our practice of praying in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. As we close this three part series on spiritual warfare, I offer five brief takeaways. Number one the image of God is the armor of God. We must put on the full armor of God. Number three we need only take our stand and then stand firm. Number four he who is in us is greater than he who is in the world. Number five the real work of spiritual warfare is prayer. And here's one more to never forget. One little word shall fail him. Thank you Martin Luther. Let's pray. Abba Father, we thank you for your son Jesus, who embodies and exemplifies what it looks like to pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of Prayers and requests by your spirit. Would you teach us to pray in this way? In Jesus name, Amen. Our journal prompts today on a scale from 1 to 10. You know I love scaling questions. 10 is the highest. Where do you place your present practice of prayer? What would it look like to move one number up on the scale? I'll just go first on that one. I think I would have to say if I'm evaluating it right now, a six. And to go from a six to a seven, I'm gonna need to wake up. I'm gonna need a little more awakening, a little more attunement, just more presence of mind. Like I said, I think yesterday, I haven't. I haven't read Ephesians 6 in a while. I haven't been thinking about and praying about the armor of God. Okay, next question. What is your main takeaway on prayer and spiritual warfare? What's the main takeaway on these lessons? Maybe what you've heard from me, maybe what the Lord has been teaching you himself. How will that take away find implementation in your life? Again? We got to get it into practice. And then the third question. How are you learning to trust the instincts of your imagination in prayer rather than constantly questioning yourself? And what might it look like to make yourself more available to the Spirit for prayer? It could mean something as simple as saying, come Holy Spirit and pray through me. You know, one of the ways you could learn about praying in the spirit. A lot of people probably wondered why I haven't talked about this. One of the. When a lot of times when you say praying in the spirit, people mean. Like I said, it means several things. But one of the things it does mean is praying in what is known the Bible would call a prayer language. I think of it like in the tongues of First Corinthians 13, if I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, right? Well, the tongues of men are foreign languages. That's the gift of tongues that communicates the gospel in a language you don't even know to. To language you can't speak to other people who do speak and understand that language. The tongues of angels, I. I think of as the prayer language, which is. I don't have time to get into it here, but you can read about it. And it's a thing. It's. It's a gift the Lord gives. Weirds a lot of people out. And. But it's. And it is different. And I can't say that I fully understand that. I can say that I, I do practice that. And there's something to it, and it's beyond understanding, but it's an act of faith and a way of praying that. I don't know. It has efficacy. Anyway, there's that. That I'd come in to you now. It's Monday. Dad's not here today. He's going to be with us tomorrow, and I want to just.

Well, you know, we've kind of had a Monday song through this Ephesians series, haven't we? You remember it. Open the eyes of my heart. That's the thing. We've got to keep waking up and attuning ourselves to all that the Lord is and is doing and wants to show us and lead us into. It's just so easy to miss it all and look at our phones instead. Or am I by myself in that? Okay, we're gonna sing. You ready?

Just let your spirit pray. That's praying in the spirit. When your spirit gets lifted up by God's spirit and you can sing in the spirit and you can sing your prayer like that, that's a prayer he answers that's coming right out of Ephesians chapter one, that first prayer for great awakening. Open the eyes of my heart I don't know what I don't know. I can't see what I don't think I can see. But there's more. All right, gang, it's Monday as we go. I want to encourage you, those of you. We still have our. Our spring sewing season open. We're still looking for sponsors for the wake up call, and we'll put a link in the PS today and in the. In the notes on the. On the podcast platforms. Pray about it. I'm not telling you to give. No way. That's called conscription. We're looking for offering, and an offering comes from somebody that's asking, God, what do you want me to give here? Do you want me to sponsor a day? You want me to sponsor a new reader? There's all kind of price markers on Those things, from $10 all the way up to. Well, I'm not putting a limit on the upper end. Okay? Just pray and. And do what he says, and we'll all be blessed. And if it's not you this time, be free. Well, let's. Let's hit the fields. You ready to get going today? Get. Get. Have a cup of coffee. It's Monday. And be ready. Jesus has got good things to do in and through you today. Everywhere you go, with everyone you meet. For the awakening. I'm J.D. walt, and I'll see you on the field.
Episode: One Little Word Shall Fell Him
Host: J.D. Walt (Seedbed)
Date: May 18, 2026
In this episode, J.D. Walt invites listeners to begin the week grounded in the presence of Jesus, focusing on spiritual warfare as explored in Ephesians 6:18–20. Walt shares reflections on prayer as the foundational work of spiritual warfare, emphasizing the power of praying "in the Spirit," recounting personal stories and practical encouragement. The core theme is the assurance that while we are no match for Satan, Satan is utterly no match for Jesus—summed up in the Reformation refrain: “One little word shall fell him.”
Cultivating sensitivity:
Discipleship as lived practice:
This episode affirms that Christian spiritual warfare is fundamentally about standing in Christ’s victory, not fighting for it ourselves. The “one little word” that fells evil is the name and presence of Jesus, and the great work we are assigned in this battle is prayer—especially prayer guided by the Spirit. The invitation: Wake up, trust the Spirit’s lead, and practice persistent, creative, and courageous prayer, knowing that Christ in us is always greater than the world.
