Welcome to the who, what where podcast, your direct line to the designers, stylists, beauty experts, editors and tastemakers who are shaping the ever evolving world of fashion. I'm who it wears. Shopping director Bobby Schessler. And fresh off of the Oscars this past Sunday, I've gathered a panel of who wear editors to break down all of the fashion from this year's awards season. Our associate director of fashion news, Erin Fitzpatrick, senior fashion and social editor Tara Gonzalez, and associate social media editor Kayla Allen are all here today to give us their favorite looks, most jaw dropping moments, and the stylists that have been absolutely killing it. And of course, we're discussing the trends we've noticed on the carpets, including the ones we're loving and the ones we're ready to leave behind. It's all coming up on who, what, where. Hi, everyone. I am sorry. So excited to be here and discuss the red carpet from this past awards season. Today we have a roundtable of editors, so I can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts. So we have Erin Fitzpatrick, our associate director of fashion news. Hi, Erin.
Erin Fitzpatrick
Hello. How are you, Bobby?
Bobby Schessler
I'm great. I'm super excited. I know you're the true expert here. We also have Kayla Allen, our associate social media editor. Hi, Kayla.
Erin Fitzpatrick
Hi, Bobbi.
Kayla Allen
Happy to be here.
Bobby Schessler
And then we have Tara Gonzalez, our senior fashion editor. How are you, Tara?
Tara Gonzalez
So good. I'm so excited to talk about the red carpet.
Bobby Schessler
Me too. Yes. Okay, so we're recording this the Monday morning after the Oscars. So before we get any further, I Have to get everyone's thoughts, of course, on the standout looks and moments from the night. Personally, I can't stop thinking about Ariana Grande's Schiaparelli haute couture by Daniel Roseberry, styled by Mimi Cottrell. I mean, it perfect kind of ending to her Glinda journey. This, like, major press moment, awards show moment. I think it was made with over, like, a hundred thousand crystals. It felt like she was in Glinda's bubble. It just was like, a flawless, flawless look. And I know Aaron for sure also has thoughts on her performance look, which is also Schiaparelli, so I'm gonna hold and let her speak to that. But that was also, like, beyond. I'm still thinking about it. And then, of course, on the flip side, Cynthia Rivo. I'm, you know, huge wicked fan over here. Obviously, her custom Louis Vuitton dress styled by Jason Bolden. I just loved what they did this entire season. Just perfection. Okay, immediate reactions. Aaron, I'm going with you first.
Erin Fitzpatrick
Totally agree about Ariana, but as much as I loved her red carpet look, I did like her performance look even better. She changed into a glittery red strapless dress. Also, custom Schiaparelli. Like the first first look. And if you missed it, the cherry on top was a ruby red slipper jutting out from the back of her dress. Very inventive. Not sure anyone's done anything similar to that. And then another one I loved was Elle Fanning in white. What I thought was really interesting is that her dress was Sarah Burton's first couture collection for Givenchy. She's the new creative director, and I thought it was interesting that it was so bridal with the white, because Sarah Burton's biggest claim to fame is designing Kate Middleton's wedding dress back when she was the creative director of Alexander McQueen. So now we have two iconic white lace dresses by Sarah Burton and really hyping up her first Runway show.
Bobby Schessler
So, so good. Okay, Kayla, favorite for you, I have.
Kayla Allen
To go with Lily Rose Depp's Chanel look. I feel like I'm not seeing a ton of people talk about it right now, but I feel like it's one of those things we'll look back in, like, a year and just love Black lace is so at the risk of feeling a little unexciting or kind of overdone, but I'm a little biased because I'm really into peplum recently, and I feel like, obviously, there's all these, like, flare ways that you can find, but there was a small fabric attachment just, like, right at the waist of Lily's dress, and then a halter neckline. And I think something about that silhouette was just really beautiful. And there were little sequins throughout it that kind of just like, tied it together and made it feel that much more elevated for an award show. But it was still very true to Lily's style. She had beautiful hair, just kind of, like, coiled at the side, and she looked amazing.
Bobby Schessler
Love it. Okay, Tara.
Erin Fitzpatrick
Yes.
Tara Gonzalez
Well, I was also really obsessed with Lily's look, and I am like, a big vintage freak, which maybe you can tell I'm wearing this, like, Victorian ghost, like, vintage top right now to record this. But nothing brings me more joy than when a celebrity wears, like, a good archival look on the carpet. And Lily's look was custom Chanel, so it was new, but it was based off of a spring, summer 1995 couture collection look from Chanel. So I thought that was a really fun little nod. It wasn't vintage, but it was inspired by vintage. And then I also kind of going back to the wicked of it all, I loved the custom Vivienne Westwood that Cynthia Erivo wore to perform in, which was also custom Vivienne, but inspired by a spring 1997 bridal dress from Vivienne Westwood. And I feel like Vivienne Westwood bridal is so ethereal. And I'm really glad that she wore that on stage as opposed to the red carpet, because I think it really popped, you know, with the stage and the dark, and it was just like the white really came through with the flowers that really framed her. And I thought it was a really interesting, like, vintage tidbit. But that look was called the Love is Blind dress because the model that originally wore it had a blindfold. And I thought that that was just really fitting with the storytelling of. Obviously, Eriva wasn't blindfolded when she was wearing it. But the whole defying gravity is obviously her realizing that she doesn't care about being loved. She wants to do what's right. So kind of the opposite of love is blind. And I thought it was just really amazing to kind of see that dress utilized for storytelling in that way. Obviously styled without that blindfold to exemplify that. And so I thought that was really, really special and something that I was super excited about.
Bobby Schessler
Love. What a great tidbit that was too love that. Anything else?
Kayla Allen
Just going back to Ariana, too. I read somewhere that it was made in, like, a really subtle pink for her, because originally on the schiaparelli Runway. It was like more of a cream, I believe. And if you look really closely at the skirt, there's little sparkles throughout it. So I feel like they did the perfect amount of just, like, Glendifying. What was such a beautiful architectural dress, but making it that much more delicate for Ariana.
Bobby Schessler
Love it. Okay, so the after parties, also huge, of course. What looks were you guys loving from the after parties?
Erin Fitzpatrick
One favorite of mine was Kaia Gerber. She wore a vintage Valentino dress and a cape from 1997. And, you know, at these after parties, there's so many sparkly form fitting dresses, so many sheer, naked dresses, that I think it was refreshing that Kya broke the mold and went with something really angelic and floaty instead. And then apparently this is controversial, okay. But I liked Zoe Kravitz in St. Laurent. She had a little mesh butt window, if you will, in the back of the dress. I'm not sure what to call it. What would you call it, Bobby?
Bobby Schessler
I kind of like, but wind.
Erin Fitzpatrick
But I saw the comments on social, and they were kind of negative, saying it was like, bad taste or something. And I'm like, the dress is fully covering her arms, her legs, her cleavage. So, like, what's wrong with a little cheek in the back? You know?
Bobby Schessler
I mean, this is fashion that's. I mean, yeah, we're fine with that little cheek.
Erin Fitzpatrick
It was with a bow on it. Like, it was cute.
Kayla Allen
I agree. Free the cheek. Like, it's not that deep. Something a little provocative is so fitting for Vanity Fair also.
Bobby Schessler
Totally.
Tara Gonzalez
I guess I am really controversial too, because I also thought it was really fun. And we also saw there was cheeks on the Runway at the Diesel show. They had, like, really low rise jeans with a little butt crack showing. And Alexander McQueen also did that look, like, forever ago. So I think it's fun. I'm into it.
Bobby Schessler
Love it. Okay. Anything else you loved, Kayla?
Kayla Allen
I really loved Jenna Ortega's look. It was a Donna Karan gown, and she had these, like, diaphanous fabrics that were layered over each other and this really beautiful, like, gathered moment in the middle of the dress. And then the neckline and where the skirt opens into, like, a really subtle slit in the center was trimmed with this gold metallic detailing. So it was like fairy like, but almost fairy goddess like. I feel like the gold really added a sense of power to the look, and she just looks stunning. I feel like her team does a really great job of making her hair and makeup always fit her looks. And it just all came together really Beautifully for me. And it was this, like, dusty sage green with a tan underlay. So it had these, like, earth tones to it, which I feel like we're not seeing a lot of. And I think that just felt fresh to me.
Bobby Schessler
Okay, Tara, favorite.
Tara Gonzalez
So I really loved what Saral Paulson wore. We all know where I'm going.
Bobby Schessler
That was a moment.
Tara Gonzalez
She wore the most recent spring summer collection from Marc Jacobs, and it was this bright red dress with these poofs that were at the chest and at the back and at the hem. And it just felt like something like a child would make out of clay was the best way I could describe it to someone, if you hadn't seen it. And Marc Jacobs has really been creating these, like, surreal paper doll fantasy collections for the where the models are wearing these really eccentric dresses that look like they could have been dreamed up by a child. They feel like such a fashion fantasy in the best way. And Alex Khonsani wore the dress that Sarah Paulson wore on the Runway. And I think it's just really exciting when you see celebrities wearing something that's really editorial, really high fashion, something that, you know, not everyone's going to get, which I guess is kind of similar to what we were saying about the butt cheek dress as well. And I think there's so many places you can wear a beautiful gown that's more straightforward, so why not take a risk and do something kind of exciting at the Oscars? So it was really cool to kind of see her wear something that I feel like fashion editors everywhere were just, like, clapping when they saw her wear that dress. They were like, okay, finally somebody gets it. Someone's wearing the fun Marc Jacobs to the Oscars party. Like, I loved it. I was living for it.
Bobby Schessler
So, so good. Anyone else thoughts on after parties?
Tara Gonzalez
I have another one.
Bobby Schessler
Please, please. That's why we're here.
Tara Gonzalez
I really loved the Dilara dress that Roselia wore, and she's a British designer that makes dresses that are really kind of sexy and freaky. Also sheer, but really different than the sheer dresses we're used to. Underneath them, there's usually, like, a lot of crinkled material or sometimes there's things that look like hair. It's weird. And I love Rosalie, and I love her style, and I think that Dilara and her. It just, like, makes so much sense with what she wears. So it was really cool to see a celebrity wearing, once again, something that's a little bit more out of the box and really speaks to their personal style. And I also really Want that dress. So maybe I'm biased, but it's a little weird, and I love it.
Kayla Allen
So I completely agree because I feel like dilaura dresses like the edgier girls, for lack of better word. And Rosalie is so good at leaning into that with, like, her kind of moto mommy totally vibe. And I love that we have a sheer dress, but it feels removed from the male gaze. It's, like, statement making and provocative in a very different way.
Tara Gonzalez
Totally.
Bobby Schessler
Okay, so to give listeners the full picture of award season fashion, I want to go back in time to the Golden Globes, which were in early January. Okay, so Nikki Glaser hosted who I love. She wore, like, I think, nine different looks styled by Danny and Emma. And this was, you know, Demi Moore, who won her first ever big acting award for the substance. And she had that incredible popcorn actress speech. And she was wearing an Armani prive gown. Brad Goreski has been styling her, and just I feel like killing it. Okay, so to start, what would you say the general vibe of the Golden Globes are with dressing and how do celebs like to the awards season off?
Erin Fitzpatrick
Yeah. So I've been in person to the Golden Globes, I think, five times now.
Bobby Schessler
Wow.
Tara Gonzalez
Five times.
Bobby Schessler
I've been to the Globes five times.
Erin Fitzpatrick
I mean, to be clear, as press, not as a guest, but overall, being there, it's very chaotic, but it is fun. In terms of the fashion, I think the celebrities and their stylists really like to start the year off with a bang with really strong red carpet looks. Because if you can get on best dressed lists right out of the gate, there's sort of a halo effect that can extend to the rest of the season. And so I think the Globes are always a really important start.
Bobby Schessler
That makes sense. You want to, like, start strong. And so many did. I feel like. Okay, so what are some favorite looks from the Globes? Kayla, or is your standout look?
Kayla Allen
Yeah, I feel like my mind immediately goes to Zendaya. She wore this stunning, like, orange, almost bronzy but not quite Louis Vuitton gown. I feel like it was the perfect shade of orange for her. And she had this adorable little bob that just, like, tied the whole look together. I feel like a more traditional gown for me can be at risk of feeling a little bit boring, but something about the volume and shape was stunning. And again, I think when hair and makeup is an intentional part of a look, I really appreciate that. And also, this is kind of on the opposite end of the spectrum, But I loved Iowa debris's Loewe suit. I saw some reporting that it was inspired by Julia Roberts looks from the 90s, which I love because that's one of my favorite looks ever. But I like that they didn't just recreate the exact moment. She had this gold dipped feather tie that tied it all together and made it feel a little bit more modern and fresh. And I just love IO I feel like she's very quirky with her style and not afraid to step out of the box a bit. Always excited to see what she does. And this one was a really cool statement.
Bobby Schessler
Yeah, I absolutely loved it. Okay, Tara, what was your favorite?
Tara Gonzalez
So I'm always thinking about Nicole Kidman. Like, we come to this place for magic, but I go to photos of Nicole Kidman for magic. I mean, she always looks amazing. And she wore this silver Balenciaga gown. And I think what was interesting to me about it was a silver gown at an award show. Sometimes it can feel a little blah, you know, that maybe the type of thing you don't really remember. But the cut was so special. It was off the shoulder. There was a little bit of fabric that gathered around the center. It was a gown, but it felt almost like two pieces. And it had a train, but it wasn't too much. She didn't wear a necklace, which I thought was really beautiful because it just had the shoulder popping out. And she had these earrings with the right amount of sparkle. A really amazing updo. She just looked. Looked incredible, as Nicole Kidman always does. But I thought it was a really special silver dress, the kind that you actually remember. And I think that that's a little hard to do. So it really stuck with me.
Bobby Schessler
Loved it. Okay, so in terms of major red carpets, the next were the Grammys and this year's, you know, it was for the girls, right? Like, we had Chapel, Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Jochi. They all performed and took home awards. Beyonce, of course, won for Cowboy Carter. So in terms of fashion, I feel like the Grammys are always, like, a little bit more fun and playful than some of the other award shows. Personally, my favorite was Sabrina Carpenter. Like, she had that custom JW Anderson gown. It was like modern Cinderella. The feathers, the icy blue. Definitely my favorite. What were your favorites? Aaron, let's start with you.
Erin Fitzpatrick
You stole my answer. I knew I would agree on Sabrina. And other than that, I think Janelle Monet's suit by Aria with the train conductor hat was kind of fun. And, you know, she just doesn't take her seriously. Some might say that it was costumey, but I say it was fun and fashiony.
Bobby Schessler
I like when people, you know, you can tell they appreciate the fashion and they know what they're doing, but they don't take it so, so seriously. And that, I feel like, is always a standout look.
Kayla Allen
Yeah, well, now that you brought up Janelle Monae, that reminds me, because I went to the Costume Designers Guilds Awards this year, I was lucky enough to have a seat inside and get to hear all the speeches, and Janelle Monae was actually honored. And I think what was really interesting to hear her talk about is that when she was first getting started and didn't have a stylist or a budget, she would go to Gap and buy, like, deconstructed pieces to make a suit, basically. And I think she even mentioned getting her shirts at savers. And so I think the, like, idea of a suit for her kind of became her uniform early on. And so it's cool to see how, as she's evolved in her career, she's able to elevate that more but kind of stay true to those, like, roots that she came from. I think that's really sweet. But, yeah, other than that, I love Sabrina also, and Charli XCX and John Paul Gaultier. I just. I love everything Charlie does. I love that she has kind of come from this less traditional background in music and is, like, staying true to that in her style. The dress was this really, like, voluminous shipwreck look based on one of the Runway looks. And originally it was in white, but they recreated it in this, like, pale gray, almost blue shade. And it just looked so stunning on her. She had her, like, smudged eyeliner and everything tying it together, and she just looked amazing.
Tara Gonzalez
Okay. So I feel like, Kayla, you're in my brain, because we have some of the same favorites, and I will join the Sabrina consensus. I loved that dress, and obviously, I'm a nerd. And as I was saying earlier, I love a reference, and somebody pointed out online that it was referencing the 1964 film what a Way to Go, which, if no one's watched it, has such amazing old Hollywood costumes. But one of the characters wears the necklace kind of how Sabrina was wearing it with the pendant going all the way down to the back. And I just thought that was really fun because her style is obviously so old Hollywood, and it. It was fun to see her make a reference like that, obviously still making it her own. And I love that necklace styling, which I feel like it kind of had a bit of a domino Effect at the Oscars, I kept seeing people wearing necklaces backwards like that, and I was thinking, oh, maybe they saw Sabrina do it. And that was kind of the catalyst. So I thought that was really fun. I also love Charli XCX's John Paul Gaultier dress. When I saw it, I was thinking, okay, what if I wore that in white and wore it to my wedding? So that's how much I loved it. And I also really loved Gracie Abrams bridal kind of Chanel look, which I was surprised by, because, as we were saying, sometimes a bridal look maybe doesn't work on the red carpet as much. But I thought that there was something about it that really worked. And maybe it was just the flowing veil. It framed her, and it tucked into the bodice, and it flowed out of the side, and she just looked like a painting. I really loved it, and I thought it was bridal done right on the Runway, which is also really hard to do.
Bobby Schessler
Absolutely stunning. Okay, so then came the Critics Choice Awards and the SAG Awards, but okay, so they're Critics Choice Awards. My favorite, for sure was Nicole Kidman. That St. Laurent suit moment was incredible. The St. Laurent Spring show was one of my favorites in general, with that strong suiting and, like, the ties tucked into the trousers. Like, I absolutely loved it. Kayla, what was your favorite?
Kayla Allen
Yeah, I feel almost nervous to even bring up menswear, because it's not my wheelhouse at all. But Colman Domingo just always looks so good to me.
Bobby Schessler
Great at the Oscar.
Kayla Allen
So great.
Tara Gonzalez
Yeah.
Kayla Allen
But I really liked his Critic Choice Awards look because it was like this tonal, completely monochromatic brown suit, and I felt like it was just a masterclass in layering. I want to find a way to recreate that in the fall or winter for myself. I just loved the way it all came together and all the different kind of tailoring that was happening.
Bobby Schessler
Love it. Okay, Tara, I feel like you're gonna have one of the similar answers.
Tara Gonzalez
Yeah, I was gonna say we are aligned, Bobby, because Nicole Kidman always does it for me, and she did it for me again. And I'm still not over that Saint Laurent suit, as you said. It was just everything about it to me. The fact that it had, like, bigger shoulders, the wide leg trousers. I loved the polka dot tie too, which I feel like we don't often see. It's usually more like just a singular color. So I thought it was fun to see that kind of pattern. And I think when we think about old Hollywood and actresses channeling old Hollywood, we usually Think a big gown, you know, a train, Something a little bit more expected. So I thought it was fun to see her channel Old Hollywood, you know, menswear. Very Humphrey Bogart, very Cary Grant. I just thought that that was really fun, and she pulled it off amazing. So I really love to see that.
Bobby Schessler
Absolutely. Okay, so for the SAG Awards, I loved Selena Gomez. She had that custom Celine moment. Stunning. Aaron, what are your favorites?
Erin Fitzpatrick
All right. SAG Awards definitely agree on Selena. So one thing I noticed that people on Social really were loving Leighton Meester and Adam Brody. And I did, too. We had a couple of Social editors IRL at the SAG Awards, and I looked at all the videos we posted on the who It Where? Instagram, and our Leighton and Adam video was the most liked and the most viewed.
Kayla Allen
Yeah, our social audience loves a cute couple. I personally really loved Keke Palmer's archival Chanel poll. She had this, like, ornate gold trim at the neckline, and it looked so beautiful on her. And again, I guess I'm just really loving a bob right now, like how I mentioned Zendaya's. But I think these, like, short and sweet hairstyles are really tying these gowns together and kind of letting the dress do the talking. And I also found Quinta Brunson's Dior resort look to be really interesting, because I feel like we don't see a lot of lighter fabrics on these red carpets, but we're heading into spring. It's the perfect time to wear a resort look, and it was just really beautiful. She looked like she could leave this award show and go to, like, a really fancy dinner somewhere on a beach, and I love that.
Erin Fitzpatrick
Yeah.
Tara Gonzalez
I also loved Kiki's look. I love the gloves. I love the glamour. I overall felt like this carpet definitely felt like it had that old Hollywood glamour vibe the whole entire night. I also agree, Bobby, on Selena Gomez's Celine look. I actually love that the gown was navy as well, because I don't feel like we see that as often. It's usually black, so I thought that that was kind of a fun touch, and it was the perfect amount of off the shoulder and little sexy leg slip moment. And I also loved Elle Fanning's Peplum Loewe dress, which I know, Kayla, you were saying you're super into peplum, and I'm definitely on that train. I'm fully invested in the peplum return, and I love that it was a velvet top, and the bottom part was silky. I thought that that was kind of a fun play on different textures Working really well together.
Bobby Schessler
Amazing. Love our full recap. So thinking back through, you know, the last couple months, this award show journey, who were some of your favorite celebs overall to watch the season? Like, who really, really brought their A game?
Erin Fitzpatrick
First of all, selfishly, I do wish we saw more Zendaya.
Bobby Schessler
I know.
Erin Fitzpatrick
I was hoping she was going to be at the Oscars. No show. But otherwise, I really did enjoy Timothee Chalamet's entire press tour. I don't think we've talked about him yet. Culminating in that butter yellow look at the Oscars. Bobby, what did you think of that?
Bobby Schessler
I loved it. I would wear it tomorrow. Yeah, Givenchy, right? Custom, like, gorgeous.
Tara Gonzalez
Yeah, loved it.
Kayla Allen
Kind of. On that same note, about a complete unknown, I've been loving Elle Fanning this season. I had the pleasure of being able to attend the LA premiere of the movie, and I have, like, such a visceral memory of. Of when she walked the carpet in that Gucci dress and those little pigtails. And I feel like they did such a fun job making references to the 60s, but still making it feel fresh and Elle at the end of the day. But I really loved that for the Golden Globes. There was leopard print in both her red carpet and after party looks. I love a good through line like that. And her Valentino look from the National Board of Review gala, which is kind of random out of all the award shows that we're talking about, but she looked so stunning that day, and it was just like all these pastels. She had, like, her hair with a little not bump it, but almost like a bump it vibe. And she just looked so darling. I think she's very good at, like, these sweeter looks, and I really appreciate that as someone who's like a girly girl in her core.
Bobby Schessler
Love it. Okay, Tara, who has been your favorite?
Tara Gonzalez
Yeah. So I've been a fan of Charli XCX for so many years, an OG fan. And so it's really exciting to see her get her flowers after so long and everybody kind of really appreciating how incredible she is is. And I feel like she really knows who she is, and it comes across in everything that she wears. You see a dress that she's wearing and it feels made for her, even if you've seen it on the Runway or someone else wear it. She just really has individualized style that I think is rare on the red carpet, where sometimes people are wearing what's popular or what's trendy or what they think will look beautiful. And I think she really wears something that feels Charlie. And at the Brit Awards this weekend, she wore a sheer black Dallara dress, which obviously we've all been talking about that, but I thought it was really incredible. And it was hooded, very ethereal. And I just think that everything she wears is kind of hypnotic. At least I'm hypnotized. I'm always like, I want it. I saw Charlie wear a Rhod d'arte dress to a Nosferatu premiere, and I actually wore that same dress to a wedding. So the thought that we both own a similar dress, like, sent me over the edge. That's how much I love her. But I just feel like she just does a really great job at dressing for herself, and that's really special, I think, to see on the red.
Bobby Schessler
Absolutely love it. Okay, so what about kind of emerging it fashion people? Like, who is kind of like the new fashion person that we've seen during this red carpet season? Aaron.
F
Yeah.
Erin Fitzpatrick
I mean, the obvious answer would be Mikey Madison, fresh off her Oscar winner, and she looked fabulous.
Bobby Schessler
She did.
Erin Fitzpatrick
But another emerging it girl, I think is Anna Sawai. She'll be a household name in no time, and I think she's a really good example of. Of the power of fashion and how it can elevate an actress, because having really great style, you can appeal to people who aren't necessarily familiar with your acting work. So I haven't even seen Shogun, but I know Anna Sawai, and I know she has great style and a great stylist. So I think Anna is my answer for that.
Bobby Schessler
Love it. What about Kayla? What do you think?
Kayla Allen
Yeah, I'm kind of going to echo Tara's point. I think we really are in each other's minds today. But I've also been a big fan of Charlie forever, and I think she's, again, to Tara's point, really getting her flowers. And her stylist, Chris Horan, is so incredibly talented. He styles a lot of her music videos and stuff too. So there's definitely a through line in everything she wears, whether it's on the red carpet or for her personal projects. But I think just translating someone with an edgier sense of style onto the red carpet is kind of a big undertaking, especially when a lot of people are opting for more traditional looks. And I think he's just done such a great job with that, and I think that representation for, like, little subcultures in music and everyone that's like, a nerd about, like, the underground scene is now getting to see that take a new life. And I think that's really special.
Bobby Schessler
Absolutely. Okay. Tara.
Tara Gonzalez
Yeah. So I love Chapel Roan. And I think that what I love about her style is that she takes risks. She loves to make a reference. She loves to dig into the archives. And as a fashion obsessive, kind of like what you were saying, Kayla, it's really cool to see when celebrities do things like that. And I know that her 2003 couture Jean Paul Gaultier Grammys dress with the Degas ballerinas and layers of yellow tulle was so major, and I could honestly talk about it forever. And afterwards, I was consuming all of the content I could about how this look came together because I thought it was so cool to see. And I saw her stylist. Genesis Web said that they wanted something that went beyond aesthetics and that there was real weight and history in that dress and meaning. And once again, I think that that's exciting to kind of see people wanting to make an impression of something that isn't just beautiful. You know, that there's something there that tells a story that speaks to her as an artist and the message that she's trying to send with her music and everything. I just really love to see people thinking more than what is going to look beautiful, because it obviously looked beautiful, but there was, like, so much more to it. And I thought that was really great. And I think that you can see that in that Chapel wears on the red carpet and on stage. I'm so excited to see all of the looks that she has for us in the future. Can't wait.
Bobby Schessler
Okay, so can you pinpoint any stylists who really did an amazing job this season? We've spoken about some already, like Mimi Cattrall and Jason Bolden and Brad Goreski. Samantha McMillan with Elle Fanning, Kayla. Stylists that come to mind?
Kayla Allen
Yeah, I mean, stylists are the unsung heroes, and I feel like I'm always so happy to talk about them because they do such incredible work. If I had to pick a favorite as of, I think it would be Jared Elner. I'm a huge fan of him, and from my perspective, I think he's played such a huge role in shaping Sabrina Carpenter into the pop star that she is. He's created just, like, such a distinct but classic look for her. She's just so, you know, old Hollywood but also modern, and I think that is really hard to do and execute well. And her looks are always so flawless. And he styled her short and sweet tour and has also been styling her for red carpets recently. So again, I think that through line of one stylist and like their taste being a little bit evident and everything that an artist does is really special.
Tara Gonzalez
Okay, Tara, I guess I was kind of saying this before, but I do really love Genesis Web and I feel like not only is she putting Chapel Roan in these incredible archival looks, but she's also dressing Lisa in really amazing emerging designers. Like she recently dressed her in a Weiderhoff look and I feel like that's really great because obviously we see a lot of the big houses represented on the red carpet, but it's amazing when you have a stylist that is really in tune with what is getting people really excited about fashion and younger emerging designers. So I think that's really cool that she's doing. And also she recently dressed all 70 dancers for Gaga's Abracadabra music video, which also sent me into another dimension. Yeah, it was amazing because she made 70 different looks. They were all wearing different things, but it still was a cohesive vision. That was such an undertaking. And I feel like that was another example of using a designer she had. A lot of the dancers were wearing leather pieces by Zanna Bain, which is a post fetish leather brand that started in New York, is based in la, has a cult following, but, you know, it's not a household name by any means. So I think she's giving these cool brands, emerging designers, younger designers, maybe brands that haven't had their time in the sun. She's really giving them a moment and I think that that's really incredible and also feels really singular and different than what a lot of people are doing right now.
Bobby Schessler
Okay, so in terms of trends, what trends did we see kind of over and over again on the red carpet? Do we think any will kind of endure past the red carpet?
Erin Fitzpatrick
Yeah. So at the Oscars and the Oscars after party, there were so many white bridally looks like I lost count. But on the main red carpet, Elle Fanning, Lupita Nyong'o and Penelope Cruz wore all white. At the after party, Kim Kardashian wore a voluminous Balenciaga white dress. Jodie Turner Smith, Ruth Nega, Chrissy Teigen, Lindsay Lohan, everyone was wearing white dresses.
Kayla Allen
Yeah, I feel like I'm also thinking about color trends, but kind of before the Oscars, I feel like we were seeing a lot of pastels. And that's so in line with what we saw on like the spring runways this season. Lots of baby pink especially. And then we Saw Timothy, obviously in butter yellow last night. But I think one thing that was maybe a little bit less expected just based on the runways kind of prioritizing the pinks and yellows, was this kind of resurgence of, like, a baby blue, which was especially popular at the Grammys. With Sabrina's look and also Chapel's, I feel like I wouldn't be surprised if we see that kind of, like, trickle onto the market more now. I think even brands like Reformation are putting out a lot of pastels this season, so it'll be really interesting to see that. And last night, also, I feel like we saw more primary colors than usual, like yellow, red, and blue, which was really interesting.
Bobby Schessler
Absolutely. Okay, Tara, Trends.
Tara Gonzalez
I feel like necklaces are back. For a while, it felt like no one was wearing a necklace. And maybe that has to do with how quiet luxury felt really paired back. And I think we are going to start kind of seeing more maximalism this year. That's, like, my trend prediction. Just overall. And I feel like yesterday everybody had a necklace. Like, Elle Fanning had a necklace. Ariana Grande, Mikey Madison, Selena Gomez. If you look at all of the celebrities, almost all of them had a necklace on. It just felt really noticeable. And then on a similar note, I feel like there was a lot of brooches, particularly on the menswear, on the lapels. I feel like Colman Domingo had one, Kieran Culkin had one. Sebastian Stan had one. And usually men tend to play it a little bit more safe on the red carpet and just wearing a suit. So it was fun to kind of see them add a little bit of sparkle.
Bobby Schessler
I love a brooch. Duh. Okay, what about trends that you're kind of, like, over? You feel like are a little bit tired, like you don't really want to see anymore?
Tara Gonzalez
Yeah.
Erin Fitzpatrick
You know, I hate to say it, but I think I'm over the sheer naked dress trend, particularly when they're worn with the granny panties underneath. I just, you know, we've done that a lot. Let's see something different. Let's see a little cheek, you know?
F
Right.
Bobby Schessler
Love the cheek. I get it. I'm here for it. Okay. Kayla, what are you over?
Kayla Allen
Yeah, I mean, I think to Tara's point, we are moving away from quiet luxury, and I'm happy about that. I think I just prefer something that's a little bit more exciting, less predictable. And Sabrina Carpenter and Zendaya, in a lot of cases are so good at, like, doing something traditional but giving it that, like, old Hollywood twist. And I think even that Just takes it a step further. But generally minimalism is not really my thing.
Bobby Schessler
Totally. Tara.
Tara Gonzalez
This isn't maybe something that I'm over because obviously I have really appreciated the custom pieces that referenced vintage collections, but maybe I would love to see more people actually wearing the vintage pieces themselves because I do feel like there's so many, like, incredible archival pieces and so many amazing fashion collectors out there who lend to celebrities. And I would also love to see them getting their flowers a little bit more and just seeing celebrities lean into to all of the possibilities that that could open in terms of storytelling and something a little bit different than right off the Runway. So something I'm kind of into and kind of not into.
Bobby Schessler
Totally. Okay, so before we go, I want to play a little rapid fire game. So I'm going to give you a category and you give me the first person moment look, whatever that comes to mind. Just like a quick answer. Okay. So best method dressing moment.
Erin Fitzpatrick
Timothee Chalamet in a beanie and a plaid scarf imitating Bob Dylan to its.
Kayla Allen
I think Sabrina Carpenter at the Grammys. Just really leaning into that, like, Hollywood starlet vibe.
Tara Gonzalez
Chapel Roan in the dunce hat at the Grammys while accepting her Grammys. Iconic.
Bobby Schessler
Yep. Okay. Best glam look, Aaron.
Erin Fitzpatrick
Okay. Emma Stone when she debuted her pixie haircut at the Golden Globes.

Bobby Schessler
Yes.
Tara Gonzalez
I love that.
Bobby Schessler
Yes, yes. Okay. Most interesting accessory.
Erin Fitzpatrick
All right. I'm gonna have to go with Taylor Swift's tea charm on her thigh at the Grammys. You know, got the people talking.
Kayla Allen
I love Charlotte Lawrence's, like, cat Valentino bag last night at the Oscars.
Tara Gonzalez
Sabrina Carpenter's necklace at the Grammys that she wore backwards with the pendant hitting at the lower back.
Bobby Schessler
Yep. Flawless. Okay. Most unusual look that actually worked. Aaron.
Erin Fitzpatrick
Ariana Grande's Oscars performance dress with that red shoe in the back.
Kayla Allen
I loved Lisa's red carpet look last night. The tailoring felt different.
Tara Gonzalez
Cynthia Rivo in a silver raffia gown from Alexander McQueen for Givenchy fall 1997 couture. It was a really weird look, but of course, she made it look amazing.
Bobby Schessler
Most show stopping look of the season. Aaron.
Erin Fitzpatrick
Golden Globes.
Bobby Schessler
Yep. Kayla.
Kayla Allen
I have to say, Ariana and Schiaparelli last night, of course.
Tara Gonzalez
And then Tara, my girl. Chapel Roan in the archival 2003 jpg couture gown again.
Bobby Schessler

This episode was brought to you by Ebay. Hi everyone, I'm Anna Sclante, the Associate Features Editor at who Will Wear. I hope you enjoyed today's episode as much as I did. Awards season is always such a treat for our team, getting to see all the looks, jewels and accessories Hollywood's biggest stars wear, both on the red carpet, carpet and of course to the after parts. Now, when it comes to celebrity styling, sourcing is everything. And just like in my personal life, I'm all about finding those curated gems, especially when they're pre loved or vintage. Cue ebay. This year I'm thinking a ton about celebrities and their love for pulling vintage and archival upscale pieces, breathing new life into an existing garment. Speaking of vintage shopping for archival pieces, you've got to do it right. And that's where ebay authenticity guarantee comes in. Every eligible piece is carefully inspected so you can trust you're getting the real deal. Whether it's a high end designer find or a statement Runway item. Thanks to ebay's authentication, experts on all things luxury and vintage, you can shop with confidence knowing that what you're buying is exactly what it says it is. In today's episode description, I've linked a bunch of my favorite curated archival finds, handpicked by yours truly. Think luxury treasures from heritage brands or iconic Runway collections that you might not find just anywhere. Maybe inspired by that Hollywood starlet prepping for a red carpet, you're in the mood for a Christian Dior suit from the 80s. I found one of those and so much more while searching on ebay. I didn't have to search for hours through racks like I would have at IRL vintage stores. Instead, ebay is so easy to navigate and I can find the best finds within seconds. I've been feeling so inspired by archival pieces lately, especially ones that are a challenge to find. I'm always down for a mission, so finding luxury pieces that have history behind them is incredibly rewarding, and it's never been easier to find them than on ebay. In my search, I found this burgundy Gucci skirt that feels super relevant thanks to its timeless suede material, a staple of the house while still being vintage. I also stumbled upon two of my favorite hero bags of all time, namely an edgy black, white and red studded saddlebag from John Galliano's early tenure at Dior. Just like celebrities on the red carpet, I want every piece I'm wearing, whether it's on a date night or simply to the office, to carry weight and have a story behind it. On ebay, I can easily buy a storied piece like One of Louis Vuitton's rare Papillon handbags from mid 2000s collaboration with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. While our team waits in eager anticipation for all of the archival and vintage pieces that are sure to turn up on celebrities during fashion's biggest night in a few months time, I hope you're feeling inspired to browse pre loved and archival pieces on ebay, knowing every cent is worth it thanks to their authenticity guarantee and of course, impeccable selection of luxe vintage finds. You can explore all of my favorites in the link of this episode's description, or you can go to eBay.com WhoWildware.
